We report here on the discovery of a red quasar, J004929.4+351025.7 at a redshift of z = 2.48, situated within a large Lya emission-line halo. The radio spectral energy distribution implies that the radio jets were triggered < 10^4 years prior to the time at which the object is observed, suggesting that the jet triggering of the active galactic nucleus is recent. The loosely biconical structure of the emission-line halo suggests that it is ionised by photons emitted by the central quasar nucleus and that the central nucleus is obscured by a dusty torus with Av ~ 3.0. The large spatial extent of the Lya halo relative to the radio emission means this could only have occurred if the radio jets emerged from an already established highly-accreting black hole. This suggests that the radio-jet triggering is delayed with respect to the onset of accretion activity on to the central supermassive black hole.
We developed a Monte Carlo code that describes the resonant Lyman alpha line transfer in an optically thick, dusty, and static medium. The code was tested against the analytic formula derived by Neufeld (1990). We explain the line transfer mechanism for a wide range of line center optical depths by tracing histories of photons in the medium. We find that photons escape from the medium by a series of wing scatterings, during which polarization may develop. We applied our code to examine the amount of dust extinction around the Lyman alpha in primeval galaxies. Brief discussions on the astrophys…
Models are presented for the Lyman alpha emission of dusty high-redshift galaxies by combining the Press-Schechter formalism with a treatment of the inhomogeneous dust distribution inside galaxies. It is found that the amount of Lyman alpha radiation escaping from the galaxies strongly depends on the time over which the dust is produced through stellar activity, and on the ambient inhomogeneity of the HII regions that surround the ionizing OB stars. Good agreement is found with recent observations, as well as previous non-detections. Our models indicate that the dust content builds up in no mo…
Given their proximity and age differences, nearby groups of young stars are valuable laboratories for investigations of disk evolution and diversity. The estimated 10-Myr age of groups like the TW Hydrae Association provides a strong constraint on disk evolution timescales and fills a significant gap in the age sequence between 1-Myr-old T Tauri stars in molecular clouds and 50-Myr-old nearby open clusters. I review the results of recent and on-going studies of dusty disks in three nearby groups --TW Hya, $η$ Cha and MBM 12-- that suggest rapid evolution of inner disks. However, it is unlikely…
We present stellar population modeling results for 10 newly discovered Lyman alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs), as well as four previously known LAEs at z ~ 4.5 in the Chandra Deep Field - South. We fit stellar population models to these objects in order to learn specifically if there exists more than one class of LAE. Past observational and theoretical evidence has shown that while many LAEs appear to be young, they may be much older, with Lyman alpha EWs enhanced due to resonant scattering of Lyman alpha photons in a clumpy interstellar medium (ISM). Our results show a large range of stellar po…
We report the discovery of four dusty cometary tails around low mass stars in two young clusters belonging to the W5 star forming region. Fits to the observed emission profiles from 24 micron observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope give tail lifetimes < 30 Myr, but more likely < 5 Myr. This result suggests that the cometary phase is a short lived phenomenon, occurring after photoevaporation by a nearby O star has removed gas from the outer disk of a young low mass star (see also Balog et al. 2006; Balog et al. 2008).
The formation and evolution of young low mass stars are characterized by important processes of mass loss and accretion ocurring in the innermost regions of their placentary circumstellar disks. Because of the large obscuration of these disks at optical and infrared wavelengths in the early protostellar stages (Class 0 Sources), they were previously detected only at radio wavelengths using interferometric techniques. We have detected with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) the mid-infrared emission associated with the Class 0 protostar VLA1 in the HH1-2 region located in the Orion nebula. Th…
We have carried out JHK polarimetric observations of eleven dusty young stars, by using the polarimeter module IRPOL2 with the near-IR camera UIST on the 3.8-m United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT). Our sample targeted systems for which UKIRT-resolvable discs had been predicted by model fits to their spectral energy distributions. Our observations have confirmed the presence of extended polarized emission around TW Hya and around HD 169142. HD 150193 and HD 142666 show the largest polarization values among our sample, but no extended structure was resolved. By combining our observations wi…
A star forms when a cloud of dust and gas collapses. It is generally believed that this collapse first produces a flattened rotating disk, through which matter is fed onto the embryonic star at the center of the disk. When the temperature and density at the center of the star pass a critical threshold, thermonuclear fusion begins. The remaining disk, which can still contain up to 0.3 times the mass of the star, is then sculpted and eventually dissipated by the radiation and wind from the newborn star. Unfortunately this picture of the structure and evolution of the disk remains speculative bec…
The Large Area Lyman Alpha survey has found ~ 150 Lyman-alpha emitters at z=4.5. While stellar models predict a maximum Lyman-alpha equivalent width (EW) of 240 angstrom, 60% of the Lyman-alpha emitters have EWs exceeding this value. We attempt to model the observed EW distribution by combining stellar population models with an extrapolation of Lyman break galaxy luminosity function at z=4, incorporating observational selection effects and Malmquist bias. To reproduce the high EWs seen in the sample we need to postulate a stellar initial mass function (IMF) with extreme slope alpha = 0.5 (inst…
Hydrogen Ly-alpha is our primary emission-line window into high redshift galaxies. Surprisingly, despite an extensive literature, Ly-alpha radiative transfer in the most realistic case of a dusty, multi-phase medium has not received detailed theoretical attention. We investigate resonant scattering through an ensemble of dusty, moving, optically thick gas clumps. We treat each clump as a scattering particle and use Monte Carlo simulations of surface scattering to quantify continuum and Ly-alpha surface scattering angles, absorption probabilities, and frequency redistribution, as a function of …
Strong Lyman-alpha emission is a signpost of young stars and the absence of dust and thus indicates young galaxies. To find such a population of young galaxies at z=4.5 we started the Large Area Lyman Alpha survey (LALA). This survey achieves an unprecedented combination of volume and sensitivity by using narrow-band filters on a large format (36x36 square-arcminutes) camera on the 4 meter telescope at KPNO. The volume density and star-formation contribution of the Lyman-alpha emitters at z=4.5 is comparable to that of Lyman break galaxies. With many candidates and a few spectroscopic confirma…
We present near-infrared polarimetric images of the dusty circumstellar envelope (CSE) of IRAS 19306+1407, acquired at the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) using the UKIRT 1-5 um Imager Spectrometer (UIST) in conjunction with the half-waveplate module IRPOL2. We present additional 450 and 850 um photometry obtained with the Sub-mm Common User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), as well as archived Hubble Space Telescope (HST) F606W- and F814W-filter images. The CSE structure in polarized flux at J- and K-bands shows an elongation NNE-SSW with two brigh…
We present results obtained with a 3D, Ly alpha radiative transfer code, applied to a fully cosmological galaxy formation simulation. The developed Monte Carlo code is capable of treating an arbitrary distribution of source Ly alpha emission, neutral hydrogen density, temperature, and peculiar velocity of the interstellar medium. We investigate the influence of resonant scattering on the appearance and properties of young galaxies by applying the code to a simulated "Lyman Break Galaxy" at redshift z = 3.6, and of star formation rate 22 M_sun/yr and total Ly alpha luminosity 2.0 X 10^43 erg/s.…
We report the discovery of a rich component of dusty star-forming galaxies contaminating the red-sequence in the supercluster system comprising Abell 901a, 901b and A902 at redshift ~0.17. These galaxies do not fit into the colour-density relation, because their preferred habitat is different from that of regular red-sequence galaxies, which are typically dust-poor, old and passively evolving. The dusty red galaxies prefer the medium-density outskirts of clusters while being rare in both the low-density field and the high-density cluster cores. This new result is based on the information conte…
We analyse the optical spectral properties of the complete sample of Very Luminous Infrared Galaxies presented by Wu et al. (1998a,b) and we find a high fraction (~50 %) of spectra showing both a strong H_delta line in absorption and relatively modest [OII] emission (e(a) spectra). The e(a) signature has been proposed as an efficient method to identify dusty starburst galaxies and we study the star formation activity and the nature of these galaxies, as well as the effects of dust on their observed properties. We examine their emission line characteristics, in particular their [OII]/H_alpha ra…
We present observations of the dusty emission from the young planetary nebulae Hen2-113 and CPD-56 obtained with VLT/NACO, VLTI/MIDI. The central stars of these two objects are Wolf-Rayet stars of the same spectral type [WC10]. They share an impressive number of characteristics and are located at similar distance, making the detection of any differences in their close environment of great interest. Hen2-113 exhibits a clear ring-like structure of about 0.4 arcsec in diameter, superimposed to a more diffuse environment visible in L', M' and 8.7 micron bands. No clear core could be detected for …
Using ISO-ISOPHOT we carried out a survey of almost 150 stars to search for evidence of emission from dust orbiting young main sequence stars, both in clusters and isolated systems. Over half of the detections are new examples of dusty stellar systems, and demonstrate that such dust can be detected around numerous stars older than a few x 10^6 years. Fluxes at 60 microns and either 90 or 100 microns for the new excess sources together with improved fluxes for a number of IRAS-identified sources are presented. Analysis of the excess luminosity relative to the stellar photosphere shows a systema…
This contribution presents the optical spectral properties of FIR-luminous galaxies, whose distinctive feature is often the simultaneous presence in the spectra of a strong $\rm Hδ$ line in absorption and of emission lines (e(a) spectra). A discrepancy between the star formation rate estimated from the FIR luminosity and that derived from the $\rm Hα$ luminosity persists even after having corrected the $\rm Hα$ flux for dust according to the observed Balmer decrement. It is shown that the e(a) spectrum can be reproduced assuming a current starburst and dust extinction affecting the youngest st…
High redshift galaxies selected on the basis of their strong Lyman-alpha emission tend to be young ages and small physical sizes. We show this by analyzing the spectral energy distribution (SED) of 9 Lyman-alpha emitting (LAE) galaxies at 4.0 < z < 5.7 n the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). Rest-frame UV to optical 700A < lambda < 7500A luminosities, or upper limits, are used to constrain old stellar populations. We derive best fit, as well as maximally massive and maximally old, properties of all 9 objects. We show that these faint and distant objects are all very young, being most likely only…
The physical structure of the envelopes around a sample of fourteen massive (1000-100,000 solar L) young stars is investigated on 100- 100,000 AU scales using maps and spectra in submillimeter continuum and lines of C17O, CS and H2CO. The total column densities and the temperature profiles are obtained by fitting self-consistent dust models to submillimeter photometry. Both the molecular line and dust emission data indicate density gradients ~r^{-alpha}, with alpha=1.0-1.5, significantly flatter than the alpha=2.0 generally found for low-mass objects. This flattening may indicate that in massi…
We present the discovery of a radio galaxy at a likely redshift of z = 4.424 in one of the flanking fields of the Hubble Deep Field. Radio observations with the VLA and MERLIN centered on the HDF yielded a complete sample of microjansky radio sources, of which about 20% have no optical counterpart to I < 25 mag. In this Letter, we address the possible nature of one of these sources, through deep HST NICMOS images in the F110W (J) and F160W (H) filters. VLA J123642+621331 has a single emission line at 6595-A, which we identify with Lyman-alpha at z = 4.424. We argue that this faint (H = 23.9 ma…
Observational facilities allow now the detection of optical and IR spectra of young M- and L-dwarfs. This enables empirical comparisons with old M- and L- dwarfs, and detailed studies in comparison with synthetic spectra. While classical stellar atmosphere physics seems perfectly appropriate for old M-dwarfs, more physical and chemical processes, cloud formation in particular, needs to be modelled in the substellar regime to allow a detailed spectral interpretation. Not much is known so far about the details of the inset of cloud formation at the spectral transition region between M and L dwar…
XMM-Newton RGS spectra of MCG-6-30-15 and Mrk 766 exhibit complex discrete structure, which was interpreted in a paper by Branduardi-Raymont et al. (2001) as evidence for the existence of relativistically broadened Lyman alpha emission from carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, produced in the inner-most regions of an accretion disk around a Kerr black hole. This suggestion was subsequently criticized in a paper by Lee et al. (2001), who argued that for MCG-6-30-15, the Chandra HETG spectrum, which is partially overlapping the RGS in spectral coverage, is adequately fit by a dusty warm absorber model,…
Lyman alpha galaxies at high redshifts offer a powerful probe of both the formation of galaxies and the reionization of the intergalactic medium. Lyman alpha line emission is an efficient tool for identifying young galaxies at high redshift, because it is strong in systems with young stars and little or no dust-- properties expected in galaxies undergoing their first burst of star-formation. Lyman alpha galaxies also provide a robust test of the reionization epoch that is independent of Gunn-Peterson trough observations in quasar spectra and is better able to distinguish line center optical de…
In this paper we present surveys of two open clusters using photometry and accurate astrometry from the SuperCOSMOS microdensitometer. These use plates taken by the Palomar Oschin Schmidt Telescope giving a wide field ($5^{\circ}$ from the cluster centre in both cases), accurate positions and a long time baseline for the proper motions. Distribution functions are fitted to proper motion vector point diagrams yeilding formal membership probabilities. Luminosity and mass functions are then produced along with a catalogue of high probability members. Background star contamination limited the dept…
Charge transfer (or exchange) reactions between hydrogen atoms and protons in collisionless shocks of supernova remnants (SNRs) are a natural way of producing broad Balmer, Lyman and other lines of hydrogen. We wish to quantify the importance of shock-induced, non-thermal hydrogen emission from SNRs in young galaxies. We present a method to estimate the luminosity of broad ($\sim 1000$ km s$^{-1}$) Ly$α$, Ly$β$, Ly$γ$, H$β$ and P$α$ lines, as well as the broad and narrow luminosities of the two-photon (2$γ$) continuum, from existing measurements of the H$α$ flux. The expected broad Ly$α$ lumin…
The early stage in the formation of a galaxy inevitably involves a spatially extended distribution of infalling, cold gas. If a central luminous quasar turned on during this phase, it would result in significant extended Lyman alpha emission, possibly accompanied by other lines. For halos condensing at redshifts between 3 < z < 8 and having virial temperatures between 2 x 10^5 K and 2 x 10^6 K, this emission results in a ``fuzz'' of characteristic angular diameter of a few arcseconds, and surface brightness between 10^-18 and 10^-16 erg/s/cm^2/asec^2. The fuzz around bright, high redshift quas…
We demonstrate the efficiency of high quality optical spectroscopic observations of two compact radio sources, PKS 1549-79 and PKS 1345+12, as a probe of the kinematics and physical conditions in the circumnuclear gas in the early stages of radio source evolution. We outline a schematic model for PKS 1345+12 based on the model for PKS 1549-79 proposed by Tadhunter et al. (2001) in which the young radio source is expanding through a dense and dusty enshrouding cocoon, sweeping material out of the circumnuclear regions.
Long-slit spectra of several dozen young star clusters have been obtained at three positions in the Antennae galaxies with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and its 52"x0.2" slit. Based on H-alpha emission-line measurements, the average cluster-to-cluster velocity dispersion in 7 different cluster aggregates ("knots") is <10 \kms. The fact that this upper limit is similar to the velocity dispersion of gas in the disks of typical spiral galaxies suggests that the triggering mechanism for the formation of young massive compact clusters ("super star clusters") is unlikely to be high…
In this paper, the first of a series of two devoted to modelling the spectra of galaxies of different morphological type in presence of dust, we present our description of the dust both in the diffuse ISM and the molecular clouds. Our model for the dust takes into account three components, i.e. graphite, silicates and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. We consider and adapt to our aims two prescriptions for the size distribution of the dust grains and two models for the emission of the dusty ISM. We cross-check the emission and extinction models of the ISM by calculating the extinction curves a…
We present HST/NICMOS observations with 0.1" (15 AU) resolution of six young stellar objects in the Taurus star-formation region. The targets of our survey are three Class I IRAS sources (IRAS 04016+2610, IRAS 04248+2612, and IRAS 04302+2247) and three low-luminosity stars (DG Tau B, Haro 6-5B, and CoKu Tau/1) associated with Herbig Haro jets. The broad-band images show that the near-infrared radiation from these sources is dominated by light scattered from dusty circumstellar material distributed in a region 10 - 15 times the size of our solar system. Although the detailed morphologies of the…
We report on the finding of the strongest H(alpha) emission -pseudoequivalent width of 705 Angstrom- known so far in a young, late type dwarf. This object, named as SOri71, is a substellar candidate member of the 1-8 Myr star cluster sigma Orionis. Due to its overluminous location in color-magnitude diagrams, SOri71 might be younger than other cluster members, or a binary of similar components. Its mass is in the range 0.021-0.012 M(sun), depending on evolutionary models and possible binarity. The broad H(alpha) line of SOri71 appears asymmetric, indicative of high velocity mass motions in the…
We present the results of a 0.86 square degree CCD photometric survey of the open cluster NGC 2516, which has an age of about 150 Myr and may have a much lower metallicity than the similarly-aged Pleiades. We select a preliminary catalogue of 1254 low mass (between 0.2 and 2.0M_{sun}) cluster candidates, of which about 70--80 percent are expected to be genuine. The mass function is metallicity dependent, but consistent with a Salpeter-like law (dN/dlog M ~ M^{-alpha}, alpha=+1.47+/-0.11 or alpha=+1.67+/-0.11 for solar and half-solar metallicities) between 0.7 and 3.0M_{sun}. At lower masses (b…
Competing models for broad spectral features in the soft X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert I galaxy Mrk766 are tested against data from a 130 ks XMM-Newton observation. A model including relativistically broadened Ly-alpha emission lines of OVIII, NVII and CVI is a better fit to 0.3-2 keV XMM RGS data than a dusty warm absorber. Moreover, the measured depth of neutral iron absorption lines in the spectrum is inconsistent with the magnitude of the iron edge required to produce the continuum break at 17-18Angstroms in the dusty warm absorber model. The relativistic emission line model can reproduce …
In this paper we study the underlying stellar population of a sample of 65 nearby early-type galaxies predominantly located in low density environments. Ages, metallicities and [alpha/Fe] ratios have been derived through the comparison of Lick indices measured at different galacto-centric distances with new SSP models which account for the presence of alpha/Fe enhancement. The SSPs cover a wide range of ages, metallicities and [alpha/Fe] ratios. To derive the stellar population parameters we have devised an algorithm based on the probability density function. We derive a large spread in age ((…
As part of a long term effort to understand pre-main sequence Li burning, we have obtained high resolution spectroscopic observations of 14 late type stars (G0--M1) in the young open cluster IC~4665. Most of the stars have \ha filled-in and \li absorption, as expected for their young age. From the equivalent widths of \ha emission excess (obtained using the spectral subtraction technique) and the \lii feature, we have derived \ha emission fluxes and photospheric Li abundances. The mean Li abundance of IC~4665 solar-type stars is log N(Li)=3.1; the same as in other young clusters ($α$~Per, Plei…
[abridged] We describe the results of our multi-wavelength observing campaign on the young stellar objects in the LkH$α$101 cluster. Our simultaneous X-ray and multi-frequency radio observations are unique in providing simultaneous constraints on short-timescale variability at both wavelengths as well as constraints on the thermal or nonthermal nature of radio emission from young stars. Focussing in on radio-emitting objects and the multi-wavelength data obtained for them, we find that multi-frequency radio data indicate nonthermal emission even in objects with infrared evidence for disks. We …
Star formation rates (SFRs) obtained via extinction corrected H alpha are compared to dense gas as traced by CO(J=3-2) emission at the centers of nearby galaxies, observed with the ASTE telescope. It is found that, although many of the observed positions are dusty and therefore heavily absorbed at H alpha, the SFR shows a striking correlation with dense gas in the form of the Schmidt law with an index 1.0. The correlation is also compared between gas traced by CO(J=1-0) and application of H alpha extinction correction. We find that dense gas produces a far better correlation with SFR in view o…
The radio emission from the youngest known Planetary nebula, SAO244567, has been mapped at 1384, 2368, 4800, 8640, 16832 and 18752 MHz by using the Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). These observations constitute the first detailed radio study of this very interesting object, as they allow us to obtain the overall radio morphology of the source and to compute, for the first time, the radio spectrum up to millimetre range. Radio emission is consistent with free-free from a wind-like shell, which is also the region where most of the [OIII] comes from as revealed by HST images. Physical p…
We report on the results of a search for Ly-alpha emission from the host galaxy of the z=2.140 GRB 011211 and other galaxies in its surrounding field. We detect Ly-alpha emission from the host as well as from six other galaxies in the field. The restframe equivalent width of the Ly-alpha line from the GRB 011211 host is about 21 AA. This is the fifth detection of Ly-alpha emission out of five possible detections from GRB host galaxies, strongly indicating that GRB hosts, at least at high redshifts, are Ly-alpha emitters. This is intriguing as only about 25% of the Lyman-Break selected galaxies…
We report a deficiency of luminous Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) with a large rest-frame equivalent width (EW_rest) of Lyman-alpha emission at z~5-6. Combining our spectroscopic sample of LBGs at z~5 and those from the literature, we found that luminous LBGs at z~5-6 generally show weak Lyman-alpha emissions, while faint LBGs show a wide range of Lyman-alpha EW_rest and tend to have strong (EW_rest >20A) Lyman-alpha emissions; i.e., there is a deficiency of strong Lyman-alpha emission in luminous LBGs. There seems to be a threshold UV luminosity for the deficiency; it is M_1400 = -21.5 \~ -21.0 …
Spatially extended Ly-alpha sources which are faint and compact in coninuum are candidates for extremely young galaxies (age of ~<10e+7 yrs) at high redshifts. We carried out a systematic survey for extended Ly-alpha sources, using deep intermediate-band imaging data taken with the Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope. Our survey covers a field of view of 33' * 25' and a redshift range of 3.24<z<4.95, down to a Ly-alpha flux of ~1e-17 ergs/cm^2/s. We identified 41 extended Ly-alpha sources. The redshift distribution of these sources shows that this kind of objects are common in the early univer…
We present a sample of mid-infrared detected sources from the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) regions characterised by strong mid-IR radiation with faint near-IR and optical counterparts. These extreme mid-to-near-IR objects (EMNOs) are defined here by a flux ratio of f_15um / f_2.2um > 25. This population is not obvious in deeper small area ISO surveys, though it produces more than 20% of the observed cosmic IR background radiation (CIRB) at 15um above 1 mJy. Near-future large area deep mid-IR surveys with the Spitzer Space Telescope, however, are bound to uncover large amounts of thes…
We present an analysis of the emission line property and the broad band spectral energy distribution of the ultra-luminous infrared Type II quasar Q132+058. The optical and ultraviolet emission lines show four distinct components: a LINER-like component at the systematic velocity, a heavily reddened HII-like component blueshifted by about 400 km/s, and two broad components blueshifted by about 400 km/s and 1900 km/s, respectively. The emission line ratios suggest that broad components are produced in dense and alpha-enriched outflows with a metalicity of 3-5 Zsun and a density of n_H ~ 10^7 cm…
