A new theoretical approach is presented that combines the Hartree-Fock variational scheme with the exact solution of the pairing problem in the finite orbital space. Using this formulation in the sd-space as an example, we show that the exact pairing significantly improves the results for the ground state energy
The traditional nuclear shell model approach is extended to include many-body forces. The empirical Hamiltonian with a three-body force is constructed for the identical nucleons on the 0f7/2 shell. Manifestations of the three-body force in spectra, binding energies, seniority mixing, particle-hole symmetry, electromagnetic and particle transition rates are investigated. It is shown that in addition to the usual expansion of the valence space within the tranditional two-body shell model, the three-body component in the Hamiltonian can be an important part improving the quality of the theoretica…
In this paper we present an evolution of our derivation of the shell-model effective Hamiltonian, namely introducing effects of three-body contributions. More precisely, we consider a three-body potential at next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral perturbation theory, and the induced three-body forces that arise from many-body correlations among valence nucleons. The first one is included, in the derivation of the effective Hamiltonian for one- and two-valence nucleon-systems, at first order in the many-body perturbation theory. Namely, we include only the three-body interaction between one or…
We present a study of the role played by realistic three-body forces in providing a reliable monopole component of the effective shell-model Hamiltonian. To this end, starting from a nuclear potential built up within the chiral perturbation theory, we derive effective shell-model Hamiltonians with and without the contribution of the three-body potential and compare the results of shell-model calculations with a set of observables that evidence shell-evolution properties. The testing ground of our investigation are nuclei belonging to fp shell, since the shell evolution towards shell closures i…
Effective field theory requires all observables to be independent of the representation used for the quantum field operators. It means that off-shell properties of the interactions should not lead to any observable effects. We analyse this issue in the context of many-body approaches to nuclear matter, where it should be possible to shift the contributions of lowest order in purely off-shell two-body interactions into three-body forces. We show that none of the commonly used truncations of the two-body scattering amplitude such as the ladder, Brueckner-Hartree-Fock or parquet approximations re…
The no-core shell model and the effective interaction $V_{{\rm low} k}$ can both be derived using the Lee-Suzuki projection operator formalism. The main difference between the two is the choice of basis states that define the model space. The effective interaction $V_{{\rm low} k}$ can also be derived using the renormalization group. That renormalization group derivation can be extended in a straight forward manner to also include the no-core shell model. In the nuclear matter limit the no-core shell model effective interaction in the two-body approximation reduces identically to $V_{{\rm low}…
Working in the framework of the ab-initio no-core shell model, we derive two-body effective interactions microscopically for specific harmonic-oscillator basis spaces from the realistic Argonne V8' nucleon-nucleon potential. However, our two-body effective interaction is only the dominant part of the A-body (A >= 3) effective interaction, which also contains three-, four- and, in general, up to A-body components. We model these multi-body components as a simple two-parameter, basis-space-dependent interaction. We then investigate the coupling needed to provide accurate descriptions of selected…
Ab-initio predictions of nuclei with masses up to A~100 or more is becoming possible thanks to novel advances in computations and in the formalism of many-body physics. Some of the most fundamental issues include how to deal with many-nucleon interactions, how to calculate degenerate--open shell--systems, and pursuing ab-initio approaches to reaction theory. Self-consistent Green's function (SCGF) theory is a natural approach to address these challenges. Its formalism has recently been extended to three- and many-body interactions and reformulated within the Gorkov framework to reach semi-magi…
Symmetric nuclear matter is studied in the self-consistent, in-medium $T$-matrix approach. One-body spectral function, optical potential, and scattering width are calculated. Properties of quasi-particle excitations at the Fermi surface are discussed. Dispersive self-energies are dominated by contributions from the $^1S_0$, $3S_1-^3D_1$, and $^3P_1$ partial waves.
The two-body density matrix for $^{4}He,^{16}O$ and $^{40}Ca$ within the Low-order approximation of the Jastrow correlation method is considered. Closed analytical expressions for the two-body density matrix, the center of mass and relative local densities and momentum distributions are presented. The effects of the short-range correlations on the two-body nuclear characteristics are investigated.
Constructing microscopic effective interactions (`optical potentials') for nucleon-nucleus (NA) elastic scattering requires in first order off-shell nucleon-nucleon (NN) scattering amplitudes between the projectile and the struck target nucleon and nonlocal one-body density matrices. While the NN amplitudes and the {\it ab intio} no-core shell-model (NCSM) calculations always contain the full spin structure of the NN problem, one-body density matrices used in traditional microscopic folding potential neglect spin contributions inherent in the one-body density matrix. Here we derive and show th…
We apply the Hybrid-Multi-Determinant method using the recent chiral two-body interactions of Entem-Machleidt-Nosyk (EMN) without renormalization to few nuclei up to A=48. Mostly we use the bare fifth order NN interaction N4LO-450. For ${}^{24}Mg$ and ${}^{48}Cr$ the excitation energies of the $2^+_1$ states are far larger than the corresponding experimental values.
We construct effective 2- and 3-body Hamiltonians for the p-shell by performing 12\hbarΩab initio no-core shell model (NCSM) calculations for A=6 and 7 nuclei and explicitly projecting the many-body Hamiltonians onto the 0\hbarΩspace. We then separate these effective Hamiltonians into 0-, 1- and 2-body contributions (also 3-body for A=7) and analyze the systematic behavior of these different parts as a function of the mass number A and size of the NCSM basis space. The role of effective 3- and higher-body interactions for A>6 is investigated and discussed.
The driving terms in three-body theories of elastic and inelastic scattering of a charged particle off a bound state of two other charged particles contain the fully off-shell two-body Coulomb T-matrix describing the intermediate-state Coulomb scattering of the projectile with each of the charged target particles. Up to now the latter is usually replaced by the Coulomb potential, either when using the multiple-scattering approach or when solving three-body integral equations. General properties of the exact and the approximate on-shell driving terms are discussed, and the accuracy of this appr…
As a new scheme of treating the tensor interaction of the nucleon-nucleon interaction, there is a proposal of a tensor-optimized shell-model (TOSM) for the study of medium and heavy nuclei. The TOSM includes the deuteron-like tensor correlation and provides quite a good reproduction of the binding energy and the size of $^4$He as compared with rigorous few body calculations. We propose a tensor-optimized few-body model (TOFM) using the spirit of the TOSM approximation in the few body framework with bare nucleon-nucleon interaction. We find that the TOFM can account for the strength of the tens…
We perform \textit{ab initio} no-core shell-model calculations for $A=18$ and $19$ nuclei in a $4\hbarΩ$, or $N_{\rm max}=4$, model space by using the effective JISP16 and chiral N3LO nucleon-nucleon potentials and transform the many-body effective Hamiltonians into the $0\hbarΩ$ model space to construct the $A$-body effective Hamiltonians in the $sd$-shell. We separate the $A$-body effective Hamiltonians with $A=18$ and $A=19$ into inert core, one-, and two-body components. Then, we use these core, one-, and two-body components to perform standard shell-model calculations for the $A=18$ and $…
The even-even Ti isotopic chain, from A = 42 to 70, has been studied within the nuclear shell-model framework by employing an effective Hamiltonian which is derived by way of many-body perturbation theory from a chiral potential with two- and three-body forces, and includes three-body contributions which account for Pauli principle violations in nuclei with more than two valence particles. We consider 40Ca as a closed core and a model space spanned by the neutron and proton 0f1p orbitals with the addition of the 0g9/2 orbital for neutrons. Calculated two-neutron separation energies and excitat…
We investigate cross sections for neutrino-12C exclusive scattering and for muon capture on 12C using wave functions obtained in the ab initio no-core shell model. In our parameter-free calculations with basis spaces up to the 6 hbarOmega we show that realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions, like e.g. the CD-Bonn, under predict the experimental cross sections by more than a factor of two. By including a realistic three-body interaction, Tucson-Melbourne TM'(99), the cross sections are enhanced significantly and a much better agreement with experiment is achieved. At the same time, the TM'(99) in…
We use a large-scale 6 hbar Omega calculation for Li6 with microscopically derived two-body interaction to construct the 0 hbar Omega 0p-shell effective hamiltonian, electric quadrupole, and magnetic dipole operators. While the E2 and M1 6 hbar Omega operators are one-body operators with free nucleon charges, the effective operators are two-body operators with substantially different renormalization for the isoscalar and isovector matrix elements, especially for the E2 operator. We show that these operators can be very well approximated by one-body operators provided that effective proton and …
Average effective two-body interaction matrix elements in the s-d shell have been extracted, from data on experimentally measured isospin centroids, by combining the recently derived new sum rules equations for pick-up reactions with similar known equations for stripping reactions performed on general multishell target states. Using this combination of stripping and pick-up equations, the average effective matrix elements for the shells, 1d^2_5/2, 2s^2_1/2 and 1d^2_3/2 respectively have been obtained. A new feature of the present work is that the restriction imposed in earlier works on target …
A novel Rayleigh-Schrödinger many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) approach is introduced by making use of a particle-number-breaking Bogoliubov reference state to tackle (near-)degenerate open-shell fermionic systems. By choosing a reference state that solves the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov variational problem, the approach reduces to the well-tested Møller-Plesset, i.e., Hartree-Fock based, MBPT when applied to closed-shell systems. Due to its algorithmic simplicity, the newly developed framework provides a computationally simple yet accurate alternative to state-of-the-art non-perturbative many-…
A discussion of the seniority quantum number in many-body systems is presented. The analysis is carried out for bosons and fermions simultaneously but is restricted to identical particles occupying a single shell. The emphasis of the paper is on the possibility of {\em partial} conservation of seniority which turns out to be a peculiar property of spin-9/2 fermions but prevalent in systems of interacting bosons of any spin. Partial conservation of seniority is at the basis of the existence of seniority isomers, frequently observed in semi-magic nuclei, and also gives rise to peculiar selection…
We combine Halo/Cluster Effective Field Theory (H/CEFT) and the Gamow Shell Model (GSM) to describe the $0^+$ ground state of $\rm{^6He}$ as a three-body halo system. We use two-body interactions for the neutron-alpha particle and two-neutron pairs obtained from H/CEFT at leading order, with parameters determined from scattering in the p$_{3/2}$ and s$_0$ channels, respectively. The three-body dynamics of the system is solved using the GSM formalism, where the continuum states are incorporated in the shell model valence space. We find that in the absence of three-body forces the system collaps…
The structure of weakly bound and unbound nuclei close to particle drip lines is one of the major science drivers of nuclear physics. A comprehensive understanding of these systems goes beyond the traditional configuration interactions approach formulated in the Hilbert space of localized states (nuclear shell model) and requires an open quantum system description. The complex-energy Gamow Shell Model (GSM) provides such a framework as it is capable of describing resonant and non-resonant many-body states on equal footing. To make reliable predictions, quality input is needed that allows for t…
Analytical expressions of the one- and two- body terms in the cluster expansion of the one-body density matrix and momentum distribution of the s-p and s-d shell nuclei with N=Z are derived. They depend on the harmonic oscillator parameter b and the parameter $β$ which originates from the Jastrow correlation function. These parameters have been determined by least squares fit to the experimental charge form factors. The inclusion of short-range correlations increases the high momentum component of the momentum distribution, $n({\bf k})$ for all nuclei we have considered while there is an A dep…
We review quantum Monte Carlo methods for dealing with large shell model problems. These methods reduce the imaginary-time many-body evolution operator to a coherent superposition of one-body evolutions in fluctuating one-body fields; the resultant path integral is evaluated stochastically. We first discuss the motivation, formalism, and implementation of such Shell Model Monte Carlo (SMMC) methods. There then follows a sampler of results and insights obtained from a number of applications. These include the ground state and thermal properties of {\it pf}-shell nuclei, the thermal and rotation…
A recursive calculational scheme is developed for matrix elements in the generalized seniority scheme for the nuclear shell model. Recurrence relations are derived which permit straightforward and efficient computation of matrix elements of one-body and two-body operators and basis state overlaps.
We realize the treatment of bound and continuum nuclear systems in the proximity of a three-body breakup threshold within the ab initio framework of the no-core shell model with continuum. Many-body eigenstates obtained from the diagonalization of the Hamiltonian within the harmonic-oscillator expansion of the no-core shell model are coupled with continuous microscopic three-cluster states to correctly describe the nuclear wave function both in the interior and asymptotic regions. We discuss the formalism in detail and give algebraic expressions for the case of core+$n$+$n$ systems. Using simi…
A new version of the nuclear shell model unifies the consideration of the discrete spectrum, where the results agree with the standard shell model, and continuum. The ingredients of the method are the non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonian, energy-dependent one-body and two-body decay amplitudes, and self-consistent treatment of thresholds. The results for helium and oxygen isotope chains well reproduce the data.
Topics related to the construction, phenomenological determination, and effects of the effective three-body forces within the traditional nuclear shell model approach are discussed. The manifestations of the three-body forces in realistic nuclei in the 0f7/2 and 1s0d shell model valence spaces are explored.
We construct effective two-body Hamiltonians and E2 operators for the p-shell by performing $16\hbarΩ$ ab initio no-core shell model (NCSM) calculations for A=5 and A=6 nuclei and explicitly projecting the many-body Hamiltonians and E2 operator onto the $0\hbarΩ$ space. We then separate the effective E2 operator into one-body and two-body contributions employing the two-body valence cluster approximation. We analyze the convergence of proton and neutron valence one-body contributions with increasing model space size and explore the role of valence two-body contributions. We show that the const…
We review results obtained using Shell Model Monte Carlo (SMMC) techniques. These methods reduce the imaginary-time many-body evolution operator to a coherent superposition of one-body evolutions in fluctuating one-body fields; the resultant path integral is evaluated stochastically. After a brief review of the methods, we discuss a variety of nuclear physics applications. These include studies of the ground-state properties of pf-shell nuclei, Gamow-Teller strength distributions, thermal and rotational pairing properties of nuclei near N=Z, $γ$-soft nuclei, and $ββ$-decay in ^{76}Ge. Several …
This review aims at a critical discussion of the interplay between effective interactions derived from various many-body approaches and spectroscopic data extracted from large scale shell-model studies. To achieve this, our many-body scheme starts with the free nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction, typically modelled on various meson exchanges. The NN interaction is in turn renormalized in order to derive an effective medium dependent interaction. The latter is in turn used in shell-model calculations of selected nuclei. We also describe how to sum up the parquet class of diagrams and present init…
We use Lee-Suzuki mappings and related techniques to construct effective two-body p-shell interactions and neutrinoless double-beta operators that exactly reproduce the results of large no-core-shell-model calculations of double-beta decay in nuclei with mass number A=6. We then apply the effective operators to the decay of nuclei with A=7, 8, and 10, again comparing with no-core calculations in much larger spaces. The results with the effective two-body operators are generally good. In some cases, however, they differ non-negligibly from the full no-core results, suggesting that three-body co…
The Bloch-Horowitz (BH) equation has been successfully applied to calculating the binding energies of the deuteron and 3H/3He systems. For the three-body systems, BH was found to be perturbative for certain choices of the harmonic oscillator (HO) parameter b. We extend upon this work by applying this formalism to the alpha particle and certain five-, six-, and seven-body nuclei in the p-shell. Furthermore, we use only the leading order BH term and work in the smallest allowed included-spaces for each few-body system (0hw and 2hw). We show how to calculate A-body matrix elements within this for…
[Background:] It is well known that effective nuclear interactions are in general nonlocal. Thus if nuclear densities obtained from {\it ab initio} no-core-shell-model (NCSM) calculations are to be used in reaction calculations, translationally invariant nonlocal densities must be available. [Purpose:] Though it is standard to extract translationally invariant one-body local densities from NCSM calculations to calculate local nuclear observables like radii and transition amplitudes, the corresponding nonlocal one-body densities have not been considered so far. A major reason for this is that t…
The ab initio no-core shell model (NCSM) is extended to include a realistic three-body interaction in calculations for p-shell nuclei. The NCSM formalism is reviewed and new features needed in calculations with three-body forces are discussed in detail. We present results of first applications to 6,7Li, 6He, 7,8,10Be, 10,11,12B, 12N and 10,11,12,13C using the Argonne V8' nucleon-nucleon (NN) potential and the Tucson-Melbourne TM'(99) three-nucleon interaction (TNI). In addition to increasing the total binding energy, we observe a substantial sensitivity in the low-lying spectra to the presence…
We implement an effective operator formalism for general one- and two-body operators, obtaining results consistent with the no-core shell model (NCSM) wave functions. The Argonne V8' nucleon-nucleon potential was used in order to obtain realistic wave functions for 4He, 6Li and 12C. In the NCSM formalism, we compute electromagnetic properties using the two-body cluster approximation for the effective operators and obtain results which are sensitive to the range of the bare operator. To illuminate the dependence on the range, we employ a Gaussian two-body operator of variable range, finding wea…
The nucleon single-particle energies (SPEs) of the selected closed shell nuclei; that is, 16O, 40Ca, and 56Ni, are obtained by using the diagonal matrix elements of two-body effective interaction, which generated through the lowest order constrained variational (LOCV) calculations for the symmetric nuclear matter with the AV18 phenomenological nucleon-nucleon potential. The SPEs at the major levels of nuclei are calculated by employing a Hartree-Fock inspired-scheme in the spherical harmonic oscillator basis. In the scheme, the correlation influences are taken into account by imposing the nucl…
We make variational estimates for the binding energies of $^2H,~^3H,~^4He,~^{16}O,~^{40}Ca$, showing their running with the Similarity Renormalization Group (SRG) cutoff towards the infrared region and show the generalized Tjon lines that emerge from the calculations. We infer the SRG evolution of the three-body contributions for the $^3H$ and $^4He$ binding energies by computing the two-body contributions with a variational approach assuming that four-body forces are negligible. At any given SRG cutoff, the three-body contributions may then be inferred as being the experimental value minus th…
In this talk we show recent developments on few body systems involving mesons. We report on an approach to Faddeev equations using chiral unitary dynamics, where an explicit cancellation of the two body off shell amplitude with three body forces stemming from the same chiral Lagrangians takes place. This removal of the unphysical off shell part of the amplitudes is most welcome and renders the approach unambiguous, showing that only on shell two body amplitudes need to be used. Within this approach, systems of two mesons and one baryon are studied, reproducing properties of the low lying $1/2^…
The nuclear shell model has been perhaps the most important conceptual and computational paradigm for the understanding of the structure of atomic nuclei. While the shell model has been predominantly used in a phenomenological context, there have been efforts stretching back over a half century to derive shell model parameters based on a realistic interaction between nucleons. More recently, several ab initio many-body methods---in particular many-body perturbation theory, the no-core shell model, the in-medium similarity renormalization group, and coupled cluster theory---have developed the c…
Various perturbative and non-perturbative many-body techniques are discussed in this work. Especially, we will focus on the summation of so-called Parquet diagrams with emphasis on applications to finite nuclei. Here, the subset of two-body Parquet equations will be discussed. A practical implementation of the corresponding equations for studies of effective interactions for finite nuclei is outlined.
We present the study of weakly bound, neutron-rich nuclei using the nuclear shell model employing the complex Berggren ensemble representing the bound single-particle states, unbound Gamow states, and the non-resonant continuum. In the proposed Gamow Shell Model, the Hamiltonian consists of a one-body finite depth (Woods-Saxon) potential and a residual two-body interaction. We discuss the basic ingredients of the Gamow Shell Model. The formalism is illustrated by calculations involving {\it several} valence neutrons outside the double-magic core: $^{6-10}$He and $^{18-22}$O.
It is shown that the three-body forces in the $1f_{7/2}$ shell, for which recently evidence was found on the basis of spectroscopic properties of the Ca isotopes and $N=28$ isotones, can be most naturally explained as an effective interaction due to excluded higher-lying shells, in particular the $2p_{3/2}$ orbit.}
We report on the calculation of the neutrinoless double-beta decay nuclear matrix element for 76Ge within the framework of the realistic shell model. The effective shell-model Hamiltonian and the two-body transition operator describing the decay are derived by way of many-body perturbation theory. Particular attention is focused on the role played by the so-called Pauli blocking effect in the derivation of the effective operator.
To elucidate the mechanism by which chaos is generated in the shell model, we compare three random-matrix ensembles: the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble, French's two-body embedded ensemble, and the two-body random ensemble (TBRE) of the shell model. Of these, the last two take account of the two-body nature of the residual interaction, and only the last, of the existence of conserved quantum numbers like spin, isospin, and parity. While the number of independent random variables decreases drastically as we follow this sequence, the complexity of the (fixed) matrices which support the random vari…
The one- plus two-body isospin nonconserving nuclear interactions are included in the prediction of ground state energies of fp shell nuclei using spectral distribution theory. This in turn is used to calculate the linear term in the isobaric mass-multiplet equation and the predictions are then compared to experimental values after the addition of the Coulomb contribution. The agreement is found to be reasonable as observed for sd shell nuclei earlier. One also sees that in this method the contribution to the linear term comes almost completely from the one body isovector Hamiltonian and that …
In this paper, we discuss the angular momentum distribution in the ground states of many-body systems interacting via a two-body random ensemble. Beginning with a few simple examples, a simple approach to predict P(I)'s, angular momenta I ground state (g.s.) probabilities, of a few solvable cases, such as fermions in a small single-j shell and d boson systems, is given. This method is generalized to predict P(I)'s of more complicated cases, such as even or odd number of fermions in a large single-j shell or a many-j shell, d-boson, sd-boson or sdg-boson systems, etc. By this method we are able…
Calculations of the spectra of various even-even nuclei in the fp shell ({44}Ti, {46}Ti, {48}Ti, {48}Cr and {50}Cr) are performed with two sets of two-body interaction matrix elements. The first set consists of the matrix elements of the FPD6 interaction. The second set has the same T=1 two-body matrix elements as the FPD6 interaction, but all the T=0 two-body matrix elements are set equal to zero (T0FPD6). Surprisingly, the T0FPD6 interaction gives a semi-reasonable spectrum (or else this method would make no sense). A consistent feature for even-even nuclei, e.g. {44,46,48}Ti and {48,50}Cr, …
A charge-symmetry-breaking nucleon-nucleon force due to the up-down quark mass difference is evaluated in the quark cluster model. It is applied to the shell-model calculation for the isovector mass shifts of isospin multiplets and the isospin-mixing matrix elements in 1s0d-shell nuclei. We find that the contribution of the quark mass difference effect is large and agrees with experiment. This contribution may explain the Okamoto-Nolen-Schiffer anomaly, alternatively to the meson-mixing contribution, which is recently predicted to be reduced by the large off-shell correction.
The density-dependent finite-range Gogny force has been used to derive the effective Hamiltonian for the shell-model calculations of nuclei. The density dependence simulates an equivalent three-body force, while the finite range gives a Gaussian distribution of the interaction in the momentum space and hence leads to an automatic smooth decoupling between low-momentum and high-momentum components of the interaction, which is important for finite-space shell-model calculations. Two-body interaction matrix elements, single-particle energies and the core energy of the shell model can be determine…
Correlated Basis Function theory and Fermi Hypernetted Chain technique are extended to study medium-heavy, doubly closed shell nuclei in j-j coupling scheme, with different single particle wave functions for protons and neutrons and isospin dependent two-body correlations. Central semirealistic interactions are used. Ground state energies, one-body densities, distribution functions and momentum distributions are calculated for 12C, 16O, 40Ca, 48Ca and 208Pb nuclei. The values of the ground state energies provided by isospin dependent correlations are lower than those obtained with isospin inde…
The correlated basis function theory is applied to the study of medium-heavy doubly closed shell nuclei with different wave functions for protons and neutrons and in the jj coupling scheme. State dependent correlations including tensor correlations are used. Realistic two-body interactions of Argonne and Urbana type, together with three-body interactions have been used to calculate ground state energies and density distributions of the 12C, 16O, 40Ca, 48Ca and 208Pb nuclei.
The Continuum Shell Model is an old but recently revived method that traverses the boundary between nuclear many-body structure and nuclear reactions. The method is based on the non-Hermitian energy-dependent effective Hamiltonian. The formalism, interpretation of solutions and practical implementation of calculations are discussed in detail. The results of the traditional shell model are fully reproduced for bound states; resonance parameters and cross section calculations are presented for decaying states. Particular attention is given to one- and two-nucleon reaction channels including sequ…
We explore the impact of optimizations of the single-particle basis on the convergence behavior and robustness of ab initio no-core shell model calculations. Our focus is on novel basis sets defined by the natural orbitals of a correlated one-body density matrix that is obtained in second-order many-body perturbation theory. Using a perturbatively improved density matrix as starting point informs the single-particle basis about the dominant correlation effects on the global structure of the many-body state, while keeping the computational cost for the basis optimization at a minimum. Already t…
We apply the no-core shell model to the nuclear structure of odd-mass nuclei straddling $^{48}$Ca. Starting with the NN interaction, that fits two-body scattering and bound state data we evaluate the nuclear properties of $A = 47$ and $A = 49$ nuclei while preserving all the underlying symmetries. Due to model space limitations and the absence of 3-body interactions, we incorporate phenomenological interaction terms determined by fits to $A = 48$ nuclei in a previous effort. Our modified Hamiltonian produces reasonable spectra for these odd mass nuclei. In addition to the differences in single…
We perform an ab initio shell-model calculation for ^{18}O in a restricted no-core model space, microscopically deriving a two-body effective interaction and introducing a minimal refinement of one-body energies in the spsd or spsdpf model space. Low-lying energy levels, except for the experimental 0_{2}^{+} and 2_{3}^{+} states, are better described in the spsdpf space than in the spsd space. The structure of low-lying energy levels is discussed with an emphasis on many-particle many-hole states beyond the four-particle two-hole configuration.
