Using data from the 2MASS All-Sky Point Source Catalogue, we have extended our census of nearby ultracool dwarfs to cover the full celestial sphere above Galactic latitute 15 degrees. Starting with an initial catalogue of 2,139,484 sources, we have winnowed the sample to 467 candidate late-type M or L dwarfs within 20 parsecs of the Sun. Fifty-four of those sources already have spectroscopic observations confirming them as late-type dwarfs. We present optical spectroscopy of 376 of the remaining 413 sources, and identify 44 as ultracool dwarfs with spectroscopic distances less than 20 parsecs. Twenty-five of the 37 sources that lack optical data have near-infrared spectroscopy. Combining the present sample with our previous results and data from the literature, we catalogue 94 L dwarf systems within 20 parsecs. We discuss the distribution of activity, as measured by H-alpha emission, in this volume-limited sample. We have coupled the present ultracool catalogue with data for stars in the northern 8-parsec sample and recent (incomplete) statistics for T dwarfs to provide a snapshot of the current 20-parsec census as a function of spectral type.
We present a 20-pc, volume-limited sample of M7-L8 dwarfs created through spectroscopic follow-up of sources selected from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) Second Incremental Release Point Source Catalog. In this paper, we present optical spectroscopy of 198 candidate nearby ultracool dwarfs, including 12 late-M and L dwarfs likely to be within 20 pc of the Sun and 94 more distant late-type dwarfs. We have also identified five ultracool dwarfs with spectral signatures of low-gravity. Combining these data with previous results, we define a sample of 99 ultracool dwarfs in 91 systems within…
Surveys for nearby low-luminosity dwarfs tend to avoid the crowded regions of the Galactic Plane. We have devised near-infrared colour-magnitude and colour-colour selection criteria designed to identify late-type M and early-type L dwarfs within 12 parsecs of the Sun. We use those criteria to search for candidates within the regions of the Galactic Plane (|b| < 10^o) covered by the Second Incremental Release of data from the Two-Micron All Sky Survey. Detailed inspection of the available photographic images of the resulting 1299 candidates confirms only two as ultracool dwarfs. Both are known …
We present initial results of our effort to create a statistically robust, volume-limited sample of ultracool dwarfs from the 2MASS Second Incremental Data Release. We are engaged in a multifaceted search for nearby late-type dwarfs and this is the first installment of our search using purely photometric selection. The goal of this work is a determination of the low-mass star and brown dwarf luminosity function in the infrared. Here, we outline the construction of the sample, dubbed 2MU2, and present our first results, including the discovery of 186 M7--L6 dwarfs--47 of these are likely to be …
A preliminary $BVRIJHK$ analysis of the white dwarfs SSSPM J2231$-$7514 and SSSPM J2231$-$7515 is presented. Although both stars were reported to have $T_{\rm eff}<4000$ K, the analysis here indicates $T_{\rm eff}\approx4250$ K for both SSSPM J2231$-$7514 and SSSPM J2231$-$7515. Given substantial scientific interest in the coolest extant degenerate stars, it is necessary to distinguish sub 4000 K objects from the bulk of cool white dwarfs. This analysis reiterates the importance of near infrared observations in constraining the spectral energy distributions and effective temperatures of the co…
We present photographic B, R and I photometry, and optical and near-infrared spectroscopy, of a new ultracool white dwarf (UCWD) discovered in the SuperCOSMOS Sky Survey. The spectrum of SSSJ1556-0806 shows strong flux suppression due to the presence of collisionally induced absorption by molecular hydrogen (H2CIA), a feature characteristic of the cool, high density environments found in the atmospheres of ultracool white dwarfs. SSSJ1556-0806 therefore joins a list of <10 ultracool white dwarfs displaying extreme flux suppression. Synthetic model fitting suggests an effective temperature <300…
We report the discovery of five very cool white dwarfs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Four are ultracool, exhibiting strong collision induced absorption (CIA) from molecular hydrogen and are similar in color to the three previously known coolest white dwarfs, SDSS J1337+00, LHS 3250 and LHS 1402. The fifth, an ultracool white dwarf candidate, shows milder CIA flux suppression and has a color and spectral shape similar to WD 0346+246. All five new white dwarfs are faint (g > 18.9) and have significant proper motions. One of the new ultracool white dwarfs, SDSS J0947, appears to be in a…
We present results of modeling of spectra of M-, L-, T-dwarfs. Theoretical spectra are fitted to observed spectra to study the main parameters of the low-mass objects beyond the bottom of Main Sequence. Application of ``lithium'' and ``deuterium'' tests for assessment of ultra-cool dwarfs are discussed.
I review the optical and near-infrared spectral characteristics of the extremely cool dwarfs grouped under the new classification of type L. These include both very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs, and we discuss the likely temperature range. Finally, we consider the frequency of binaries amongst very low-mass dwarfs, and the implications for formation mechanisms.
We identify seven new ultracool white dwarfs discovered in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The SDSS photometry, spectra, and proper motions are presented, and additional BVRI data are given for these and other previously discovered ultracool white dwarfs. The observed colors span a remarkably wide range, qualitatively similar to colors predicted by models for very cool white dwarfs. One of the new stars (SDSS J1251+44) exhibits strong collision-induced absorption (CIA) in its spectra, while the spectra and colors of the other six are consistent with mild CIA. Another of the new discoverie…
The discovery of a low luminosity common proper motion companion to the white dwarf GD392 at a wide separation of $46''$ is reported. $BVRI$ photometry suggests a low temperature ($T_{\rm eff}\sim4000$ K) while $JHK$ data strongly indicate suppressed flux at all near infrared wavelengths. Thus, GD392B is one of the few white dwarfs to show significant collision induced absorption due to the presence of photospheric ${\rm {H_2}}$ and the first ultracool white dwarf detected as a companion to another star. Models fail to explain GD392B as a normal mass white dwarf. If correct, the cool companion…
A 2.5 x 100 degree region along the celestial equator (Stripe 82) has been imaged repeatedly from 1998 to 2005 by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. A new catalogue of ~4 million light-motion curves, together with over 200 derived statistical quantities, for objects in Stripe 82 brighter than r~21.5 has been constructed by combining these data by Bramich et al. (2007). This catalogue is at present the deepest catalogue of its kind. Extracting the ~130000 objects with highest signal-to-noise ratio proper motions, we build a reduced proper motion diagram to illustrate the scientific promise of the ca…
We present predictions for the numbers of ultra--cool dwarfs in the Galactic disk population that could be detected by the WFCAM/UKIDSS Large Area Survey and Ultra Deep Survey. Simulated samples of objects are created with masses and ages drawn from different mass functions and birthrates. Each object is then given absolute magnitudes in different passbands based on empirically derived bolometric correction vs. effective temperature relationships (or model predictions for Y dwarfs). These are then combined with simulated space positions, velocities and photometric errors to yield observables s…
We present PHOENIX atmosphere models for metal-rich cool white dwarfs using improved line shapes for the Na I and K I resonance doublets. Profiles for collisional broadening due to H2 and He based on the adiabatic representation show strong deviations from Van der Waals interaction at short distances. Comparison with observed spectra that show extremely broadened Na I lines indicates that a He-rich atmospheric composition is required to explain the line strengths and spectral energy distributions. Our current synthetic spectra, using an expansion in powers of density to the third order optimis…
The Canada-France Brown Dwarf Survey is a wide eld survey for cool brown dwarfs conducted with the MegaCam camera on the CFHT telescope. Our objectives are to nd ultracool brown dwarfs and to constrain the eld brown dwarf mass function from a large and homogeneous sample of L and T dwarfs. We identify candidates in CFHT/Megacam i' and z' images and follow them up with pointed NIR imaging on several telescopes. Our survey has to date found 50 T dwarfs candidates and 170 L or late M dwarf candidates drawn from a larger sample of 1300 candidates with typical ultracool dwarfs i'-z' colours, found …
Ultracool dwarfs exhibit a remarkably varied set of characteristics which hint at the complex physical processes acting in their atmospheres and interiors. Spectra of these objects not only depend upon their mass and effective temperature, but also their atmospheric chemistry, weather, and dynamics. As a consequence divining their mass, metallicity and age solely from their spectra has been a challenge. JWST, by illuminating spectral blind spots and observing objects with constrained masses and ages should finally unearth a sufficient number of ultracool dwarf Rosetta Stones to allow us to dec…
Cool stars are known to produce flares probably as a result of magnetic reconnection in their outer atmospheres. We present simultaneous XMM-Newton optical V band and X-ray observations of the M8 dwarf LP412-31. During the observation a giant flare occurred, with an optical amplitude of 6 mag and total energy of 3 10^(32) erg in each the V band and soft X-rays. Both flare onset and flare decay were completely covered in both wavebands with a temporal resolution of 20 s, allowing for a determination of the flare time scales as well as a study of the temperature evolution of the flaring plasma. …
We present new spectroscopic and photometric measurements of the white dwarfs LHS 3250 and WD 0346+246. Along with F351-50, these white dwarfs are the coolest ones known, all with effective temperatures below 4000 K. Their membership in the Galactic halo population is discussed, and detailed comparisons of all three objects with new atmosphere models are presented. The new models consider the effects of mixed H/He atmospheres and indicate that WD 0346+246 and F351-50 have predominantly helium atmospheres with only traces of hydrogen. LHS 3250 may be a double degenerate whose average radiative …
We are currently undertaking a program aimed at identifying previously-unrecognised late-type dwarfs within 20 parsecs of the Sun. As a first step, we have cross-referenced Luyten's NLTT proper motion catalogue against the second incremental release of the 2MASS Point Source Catalogue, and use optical/infrared colours, derived by combining Luytens's m(r) estimates with 2MASS data, to identify candidate nearby stars. This paper describes the definition of a reference sample of 1245 stars, and presents a compilation of literature data for over one-third of the sample. Only 274 stars have trigono…
We show that the two groups of ultracool dwarfs classified as L and T types can be understood as a temperature effect in a unique sequence of the model photospheres in which dust always exists but only in the restricted region deep in the photosphere. Under the high density of the photospheres of cool dwarfs, dust forms easily at the condensation temperature T_cond (about 2000 K), but the dust will soon grow larger than the critical radius r_cr at the critical temperature T_cr (about 1800 K). The large dust grains with r > r_cr will soon segregate from the gas and precipitate below the photosp…
The optical and infrared colors of L and T dwarfs are sensitive to cloud sedimentation and chemical equilibrium processes in their atmospheres. The i'-z' vs. J-K color-color diagram provides a window into diverse atmospheric processes mainly because different chemical processes govern each color, and cloud opacity largely affects J-K but not i'-z'. Using theoretical atmosphere models that include for the first time a self-consistent treatment of cloud formation, we present an interpretation of the i'-z' vs. J-K color trends of known L and T dwarfs. We find that the i'-z' color is extremely sen…
We present a new method for direct measurement of magnetic fields on ultracool stars and brown dwarfs. It takes advantage of the Wing-Ford band of FeH, which are seen throughout the M and L spectral types. These molecular features are not as blended as other optical molecular bands, are reasonably strong through most of the spectral range, and exhibit a response to magnetic fields which is easier to detect than other magnetic diagnostics, including the usual optical and near-infrared atomic spectral lines that have heretofore been employed. The FeH bands show a systematic growth as the star ge…
We present BVRI photometry of 180 bright, southern nearby-star candidates. The stars were selected from the New Luyten Two-Tenths proper motion catalogue based on optical/infrared colours, constructed by combining Luytens's m(r) estimates with near-infrared photometry from the 2-Micron All Sky Survey. Photometric parallaxes derived from (V-K), (V-I) and (I-J) colours, combined with the limited available astrometry, show that as many as 108 stars may lie within 20 parsecs of the Sun. Of these, 53 are new to nearby star catalogues, including three within 10 parsecs of the Sun.
We have combined 2MASS and POSS II data in a search for nearby ultracool (later than M6.5) dwarfs with K_s<12. Spectroscopic follow-up observations identify 53 M7 to M9.5 dwarfs and seven L dwarfs. The observed space density is 0.0045 +- 0.0008 M8-M9.5 dwarfs per cubic parsec, without accounting for biases, consistent with a mass function that is smooth across the stellar/substellar limit. We show the observed frequency of H alpha emission peaks at ~100% for M7 dwarfs and then decreases for cooler dwarfs. In absolute terms, however, as measured by the ratio of H alpha to bolometric luminosity,…
We present multi-colour photometry of the M8.5V ultracool dwarf "pulsar" TVLM 513-46546 (hereafter TVLM 513) obtained with the triple-beam photometer ULTRACAM. Data were obtained simultaneously in the Sloan-g' and Sloan-i' bands. The previously reported sinusoidal variability, with a period of 2-hrs, is recovered here. However, the Sloan-g' and Sloan-i' lightcurves are anti-correlated, a fact which is incompatible with the currently proposed starspot explanation for the optical variability. The anti-correlated nature and relative amplitudes of the optical lightcurves are consistent with the ef…
We report CCD photometric monitoring of the nonemission ultracool dwarf BRI 0021-0214 (M9.5) obtained during 10 nights in 1995 November and 4 nights in 1996 August, with CCD cameras at 1 m class telescopes on the observatories of the Canary Islands. We present differential photometry of BRI 0021-0214, and we report significant variability in the I-band light curve obtained in 1995. A periodogram analysis finds a strong peak at a period of 0.84 day. This modulation appears to be transient because it is present in the 1995 data but not in the 1996 data. We also find a possible period of 0.20 day…
We present the first results of a wide field survey for cool brown dwarfs with the MegaCam camera on the CFHT telescope, the Canada-France Brown Dwarf Survey, hereafter CFBDS. Our objectives are to find ultracool brown dwarfs and to constrain the field-brown dwarf mass function thanks to a larger sample of L and T dwarfs. We identify candidates in CFHT/MegaCam i' and z' images using optimised psf-fitting within Source Extractor, and follow them up with pointed near-infrared imaging on several telescopes. We have so far analysed over 350 square degrees and found 770 brown dwarf candidates brigh…
We present the discovery of the widest known ultracool dwarf - white dwarf binary. This binary is the first spectroscopically confirmed widely separated system from our target sample. We have used the 2MASS and SuperCOSMOS archives in the southern hemisphere, searching for very widely separated ultracool dwarf - white dwarf dwarf binaries, and find one common proper motion system, with a separation of 3650-5250AU at an estimated distance of 41-59pc, making it the widest known system of this type. Spectroscopy reveals 2MASS J0030-3740 is a DA white dwarf with Teff=7600+/-100K, log(g)=7.79-8.09 …
We present initial results of an all-sky search for late-type dwarfs within 20 pc of the Sun using the New Luyten Two-Tenths (NLTT) catalog cross-referenced with the 2-Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) database. The results were obtained with low-resolution optical spectroscopic follow-up of candidate nearby-stars as a preliminary test of our methodology. M_J, derived using spectral indices, and 2MASS J are used to estimate distances. Out of the 70 objects observed, 28 are identified as previously unrecognized objects within 25 pc of the Sun, and up to 19 of these are within 20 pc. One, LP 647-13 …
We present low-resolution optical spectroscopy and BVRI photometry of 453 candidate nearby stars drawn from the NLTT proper motion catalogue. The stars were selected based on optical/near-infrared colours, derived by combining the NLTT photographic data with photometry from the 2MASS Second Incremental Data Release. Based on the derived photometric and spectroscopic parallaxes, we identify 111 stars as lying within 20 parsecs of the Sun, including 9 stars with formal distance estimates of less than 10 parsecs. A further 53 stars have distance estimates within 1-sigma of our 20-parsec limit. Al…
Magnetic activity in ultracool dwarfs, as measured in X-rays and H$α$, shows a steep decline after spectral type M7-M8. So far, no L dwarf has been detected in X-rays. In contrast, L dwarfs may have higher radio activity than M dwarfs. We observe L and T dwarfs simultaneously in X-rays and radio to determine their level of magnetic activity in the context of the general decline of magnetic activity with cooler effective temperatures. The field L dwarf binary Kelu-1 was observed simultaneously with Chandra and the Very Large Array. Kelu-1AB was detected in X-rays with $L_{\rm X} = 2.9_{-1.3}^{+…
The atmospheres of substellar objects contain clouds of oxides, iron, silicates, and other refractory condensates. Water clouds are expected in the coolest objects. The opacity of these `dust' clouds strongly affects both the atmospheric temperature-pressure profile and the emergent flux. Thus any attempt to model the spectra of these atmospheres must incorporate a cloud model. However the diversity of cloud models in atmospheric simulations is large and it is not always clear how the underlying physics of the various models compare. Likewise the observational consequences of different modelin…
Astrometric observations of resolved binaries provide estimates of orbital periods and will eventually lead to measurement of dynamical masses. Only a few very low mass star and brown dwarf masses have been measured to date, and the mass-luminosity relation still needs to be calibrated. We have monitored 14 very low mass multiple systems for several years to confirm their multiplicity and, for those with a short period, derive accurate orbital parameters and dynamical mass estimates. We have used high spatial resolution images obtained at the Paranal, Lick and HST observatories to obtain astro…
Continuing our census of late-type dwarfs in the Solar Neighbourhood, we present BVRI photometry and optical spectroscopy of 800 mid-type M dwarfs drawn from the NLTT proper motion catalogue. The targets are taken from both our own cross-referencing of the NLTT catalogue and the 2MASS Second Incremental release, and from the revised NLTT compiled by Salim & Gould (2003). All are identified as nearby-star candidates based on their location in the (m_r, (m_r-K_S)) diagram. Three hundred stars discussed here have previous astrometric, photometric or spectroscopic observations. We present new BVRI…
We have compiled L' and M' photometry of 63 single and binary M, L,and T dwarfs obtained at UKIRT using the MKO filter set. This compilation includes new L' data for 8 L dwarfs and 13 T dwarfs and new M' data for 7 L dwarfs, 5 T dwarfs, and Gl 229A. We compute L_bol, BC_K, and T_eff for 42 dwarfs whose flux-calibrated JHK spectra, L' photometry, and trigonometric parallaxes are available, and we estimate these quantities for 9 other dwarfs whose parallaxes and flux-calibrated spectra have been obtained. BC_K is a well-behaved function of near-IR spectral type with a dispersion of ~0.1 mag for …
We present the discovery of seven new T dwarfs identified in the Two Micron All Sky Survey. Low-resolution (R$\sim$150) 0.8--2.5 micron spectroscopy obtained with the IRTF SpeX instrument reveal the characteristic H$_2$O and CH$_4$ bands in the spectra of these brown dwarfs. Comparison to spectral standards observed with the same instrument enable us to derive classifications of T3 to T7 for the objects in this sample. Moderate-resolution (R$\sim$1200) near-infrared spectroscopy for a subset of these discoveries reveal K I line strengths consistent with previously observed trends with spectral…
(Abridged). We report on the linear polarimetric observations in the Johnson I filter of 44 M6-L7.5 ultracool dwarfs (2800-1400 K). Eleven (10 L and 1 M) dwarfs appear to have significant linear polarization (P = 0.2-2.5%). We have compared the M- and L-dwarf populations finding evidence for a larger frequency of high I-band polarization in the coolest objects, supporting the presence of significant amounts of dust in L-dwarfs. The probable polarizing mechanism is related to the presence of heterogeneous dust clouds nonuniformly distributed across the visible photospheres and the asymmetric sh…
(Abridged) We present multi-epoch imaging of the T5.0+T5.5 binary 2MASS J1534-2952AB obtained with the Keck laser guide star adaptive optics system. Combined with an extensive (re-)analysis of archival HST imaging, we find a total mass of 0.056+/-0.003 Msun (59+/-3 Mjup). This is the first field binary for which both components are directly confirmed to be substellar. This is also the coolest and lowest mass binary with a dynamical mass determination to date. Using evolutionary models, we derive an age of 0.78+/-0.09 Gyr for the system, and we find Teff = 1028+/-17 K and 978+/-17 K and masses …
We present the results of spectroscopic follow-up observations for a sample of 71 red objects with high proper motions in the range 0.08-1.14 arcsec/yr as detected using APM and SSS measurements of multi-epoch photographic Schmidt plates. Red objects were selected by combining the photographic BjRI magnitudes with 2MASS near-infrared JHKs magnitudes. Some 50 of the 71 spectroscopically classified objects turn out to be late-type (>M6) dwarfs and in more detail, the sample includes 35 ultracool dwarfs with spectral types between M8 and L2, some previously reported, as well as five M-type subdwa…
Precise measurements of the fundamental properties of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs are key to understanding the physics underlying their formation and evolution. While there has been great progress over the last decade in studying the bulk spectrophotometric properties of low-mass objects, direct determination of their masses, radii, and temperatures have been very sparse. Thus, theoretical predictions of low-mass evolution and ultracool atmospheres remain to be rigorously tested. The situation is alarming given that such models are widely used, from the determination of the low-mass end of…
We have carried out multi-epoch, time-series differential I-band photometry of a large sample of objects in the south-east region of the young (~3 Myr), nearby (~350 pc) sigma Orionis open cluster. A field of ~1000 arcmin^2 was monitored during four nights over a period of two years. Using this dataset, we have studied the photometric variability of twenty-eight brown dwarf cluster candidates with masses ranging from the stellar-substellar boundary down to the planetary-mass domain. We have found that about 50% of the sample show photometric variability on timescales from less than one hour to…
One of the main scientific drivers of the Space InfraRed Telescope Facility (SIRTF) is the search for brown dwarfs and extrasolar superplanets. We discuss observational strategies for identification of these objects, and conclude that an optimal strategy is a wide IRAC survey (18 deg$^2$) with a 5 $σ$ sensitivity of 3.9 $μ$Jy in channel 2 (M$\sim19.1^m$). For this sensitivity, we provide estimates of the number of low mass brown dwarfs and isolated planets detected per square degree for power-law mass functions with $α$=1.5, and 1.0. Shallower surveys covering a larger area are inefficient bec…
We have obtained projected rotation velocities (vsini) of a sample of 19 ultracool dwarfs with spectral types in the interval M6.5-T8 using high-resolution, near-infrared spectra obtained with NIRSPEC and the Keck II telescope. Among our targets there are two young brown dwarfs, two likely field stars, and fifteen likely brown dwarfs (30-72 Mjup) of the solar neighborhood. Our results indicate that the T-type dwarfs are fast rotators in marked contrast to M-type stars. We have derived vsini velocities between <15 and 40 km/s for them, and have found no clear evidence for T dwarfs rotating stro…
(abridged) Deep multi-epoch Sloan Digital Sky Survey data in a 275 square degrees area along the celestial equator (SDSS stripe 82 = S82) allowed us to search for extremely faint ($i>21$) objects with proper motions larger than 0.14 arcsec/yr. We classify 38 newly detected objects with low-resolution optical spectroscopy using FORS1 @ ESO VLT. All 22 previously known L dwarfs in S82 have been detected in our high proper motion survey. However, 11 of the known L dwarfs have smaller proper motions (0.01$<$$μ$$<$0.14 arcsec/yr). Although S82 was already one of the best investigated sky regions wi…
