We study the mass of the lightest Higgs boson in an effective Kaluza-Klein theory with two sources of supersymmetry breaking. When stop mass matrices are non-diagonal with respect to Kaluza-Klein modes and each element is not small in unit of the inverse compactification radius, a very small eigenvalue can be accommodated in the diagonalized basis. We show that in the model with the two sources, the Higgs boson mass can receive suitable corrections for various compactification radii.
We quantify the extent to which naturalness is lost as experimental lower bounds on the Higgs boson mass increase, and we compute the natural upper bound on the lightest supersymmetric Higgs boson mass. We find that it would be unnatural for the mass of the lightest supersymmetric Higgs boson to saturate it's maximal upper bound. In the absence of significant fine-tuning, the lightest Higgs boson mass should lie below $120$ GeV, and in the most natural cases it should be lighter than $108$ GeV. For modest $tan β$, these bounds are significantly lower. Our results imply that a failure to observ…
The lightest Higgs scalar boson mass in supersymmetry can be raised significantly by extra vector-like quark and lepton supermultiplets with large Yukawa couplings but dominantly electroweak-singlet masses. I consider models of this type that maintain perturbative gauge coupling unification. The impact of the new particles on precision electroweak observables is found to be moderate, with the fit to Z-pole data as good or better than that of the Standard Model even if the new Yukawa couplings are as large as their fixed-point values and the extra vector-like quark masses are as light as 400 Ge…
We discuss neutrino parameters in addition with the effects of a Higgs boson of mass $\sim$ 125 GeV in Split Supersymmetry with Bilinear R-Parity Violation. This model allows for the explanation of neutrino masses and mixing angles, and has the gravitino as Dark Matter candidate. We find constraints on the parameters in the neutrino sector of the model by performing a numerical study of the parameter space, and by fitting neutrino oscillation observables and the Higgs mass. In addition, we study in detail the decay of the lightest neutralino in this model and we realize the importance of the e…
We compute radiative correction to the lightest neutral Higgs mass ($m_h$) induced by the Kaluza-Klein (KK) towers of fermions and sfermions in a minimal supersymmetric scenario embeded in a 5-dimensional warped space. The Higgs is confined to the TeV brane. The KK spectra of matter supermultiplets is tied to the explanation of the fermion mass hierarchy problem. We demonstrate that for a reasonable choice of extra-dimensional parameters, the KK-induced radiative correction can enhance the upper limit on $m_h$ by as much as 100 GeV beyond the 4d limit of 135 GeV.
I evaluate the largest three-loop corrections to the mass of the lightest Higgs scalar boson in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model in a mass-independent renormalization scheme, using effective field theory and renormalization group methods. The contributions found here are those that depend only on strong and Yukawa interactions and on the leading and next-to-leading logarithms of the ratio of a typical superpartner mass scale to the top quark mass. The approximation assumes that all superpartners and the other Higgs bosons can be treated as much heavier than the top quark, but does not…
The first results on the searches of the Higgs boson appeared this Summer from the LHC and Tevatron groups, and has been recently backed up by the ATLAS and CMS experiments taking data at CERN's LHC. Even though the excitement that this particle has been detected is still premature, the new data constrain the mass of the lightest Higgs boson $m_{h^0}$ to a very narrow 120-140 GeV region with a possible peak at approximately 125 GeV. In this communication we shortly present the Higgs sector in a minimal supergravity model with broken R-parity. Imposing the constraint on $m_{h^0}$ we show that t…
I present a method for accurately calculating the pole mass of the lightest Higgs scalar boson in supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model, using a mass-independent renormalization scheme. The Higgs scalar self-energies are approximated by supplementing the exact one-loop results with the second derivatives of the complete two-loop effective potential in Landau gauge. I discuss the dependence of this approximation on the choice of renormalization scale, and note the existence of particularly poor choices which fortunately can be easily identified and avoided. For typical input parameter…
We have considered a supersymmetric scenario in which the minimal supersymmetric standard model is augmented with a right-chiral neutrino superfield for each generation. Such a scenario can have a lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) dominated by the right-chiral sneutrino state and the lighter stau as the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP). This can easily be motivated by assuming a high scale framework of supersymmetry breaking like minimal supergravity (mSUGRA). Due to the extremely small neutrino Yukawa coupling, the decay of the NLSP to the LSP is suppressed and consequentl…
Most ongoing supersymmetry searches have concentrated on the high-energy frontier. High-intensity fixed target beamlines, however, offer an opportunity to search for supersymmetric particles with long lifetimes and low cross-sections in regions complementary to the ones accessible to collider experiments. In this paper, we consider R-parity violating supersymmetry searches for the lightest neutralino and use the NuTeV experiment as an example for the experimental sensitivity which can be achieved.
To escape the current LHC supersymmetry (SUSY) search constraints while preserve the naturalness condition, we propose the heavy Lightest Supersymmetric Particle (LSP) SUSY. According to the different dependence on the LSP mass, we systematically classify the discriminating variables into three categories. We find the strong dependence of all current SUSY searches on variables in the first category render the weak sensitivity for the heavy LSP SUSY. Especially, all the current LHC SUSY search constraints can be evaded if the LSP mass is around 600 GeV or higher. In the Minimal Supersymmetric S…
We discuss the production and two-photon decay of the lightest Higgs boson (h) of the minimal supersymmetric standard model at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Since the observability of the signal is quite model dependent, we conduct a thorough scan of the parameter space of minimal supersymmetry, including experimental and theoretical constraints. If kinematically allowed, supersymmetric decay modes of h may be important, and can even dominate all others. The coupling of h to $b\overline b$ can be different from that of a standard model Higgs boson; this can diminish (or enhance, but only if …
We derive the general upper bounds on the mass of the lightest neutralino, as a function of the gluino mass, in different supersymmetry breaking models with minimal particle content and the standard model gauge group. This includes models with gravity mediated supersymmetry breaking (SUGRA), as well as models with anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB). We include the next-to-leading order corrections in our evaluation of these bounds. We then expand the mass matrix in powers of M_Z/mu, and find the upper bound on the mass of the lightest neutralino from this expansion. By scanning ove…
We discuss the phenomenology of the lightest neutralino in models where an effective bilinear term in the superpotential parametrizes the explicit breaking of R-parity. We consider supergravity scenarios where the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) is the lightest neutralino and which can be explored at LEP2. We present a detailed study of the LSP decay properties and general features of the corresponding signals expected at LEP2. We also contrast our model with gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking.
The upper limit on the mass of the lightest CP-even neutral Higgs in the minimal supersymmetric standard model is around 135 GeV for soft supersymmetry breaking masses in the 1 TeV range. We demonstrate that this upper limit may be sizably relaxed if supersymmetry is embedded in extra dimensions. We calculate, using the effective potential technique, the radiative corrections to the lightest Higgs mass induced by the Kaluza-Klein towers of quarks and squarks with one and two compactified directions. We observe that the lightest Higgs may comfortably weigh around 200 GeV (300 GeV) with one (two…
We present the predictions for the mass $M_h$ of the lightest Higgs boson in models with gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking as a function of the SUSY-breaking scale. We include all radiative corrections up to two loops and point out that if the CDF e+ e- two-photon event is interpreted in terms of these models, then the lightest Higgs boson should be lighter than 110 GeV.
We quantitatively explore, in the context of the D0 detector at the Tevatron, three very different techniques for observing delayed decays of the lightest neutralino of a simple gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking (GMSB) model to photon plus gravitino. It is demonstrated that the delayed-decay signals considered can greatly increase the region of general GMSB parameter space for which supersymmetry can be detected. In the simple class of models considered, the combination of standard supersymmetry signals and delayed-decay signals potentially yields at least one viable signal for nearly all …
We investigate the production of charginos and neutralinos at a 500 GeV e^+e^- collider (NLC) and study their decays to the lightest neutralino, which then decays into multi-fermion final states through couplings which do not conserve R-parity. These couplings are assumed to affect only the decay of the lightest neutralino. Detailed analyses of the possible signals and backgrounds are performed for five selected points in the parameter space.
We study a distinct supersymmetric signal of multi-photons in association with jets and missing transverse energy. At least one of these photons has the origin in displaced vertex, thus delayed and non-pointing. We consider a supersymmetric scenario in which the gravitino is the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) (with a mass $\sim 1~{keV}$) and the lightest neutralino is the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP). The NLSP decays dominantly into a photon and a gravitino within the detector with a decay length ranging from $cτ_{\tildeχ}\sim$ 50-100 cm. In addition, we assume that …
We consider the scenarios of the GMSB models in which the dominant signal for supersymmetry at the Tevatron are the events having two or three $τ$ leptons with high $p_T$ accompanied by large missing transverse energy. This signal is very different from the multijet or multileptons (involving $e$ and/or $μ$ only) in the usual supergravity models or the photonic signals in the GMSB models (where the lightest neutralino is the next to lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP)). The parameter space where the lighter stau is the NLSP allows this possibility. We find that such a signal could be obser…
Supersymmetry with broken R-parity can explain the neutrino mass squared differences and mixing angles observed in neutrino oscillation experiments. In the minimal model, where R-parity is broken only by bilinear terms, certain decay properties of the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) are correlated with neutrino mixing angles. Here we consider charginos, squarks, gluinos and sneutrinos being the LSP and calculate their decay properties in bilinear R-parity breaking supersymmetry. Together with the decays of charged scalars and neutralinos calculated previously this completes the proof th…
We examine in detail the neutrino masses and mixing patterns in an extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model with three gauge-singlet neutrinos and R-parity violation. The Majorana masses for the gauge-singlet neutrinos as well as the usual $μ$-term for the Higgs superfields are generated at the electroweak scale through the vacuum expectation values of the singlet sneutrinos. The resulting effective mass matrix for the three light neutrinos have contributions from the seesaw mechanism involving the singlet neutrinos as well as due to the mixing with the heavy neutralinos. This mo…
In this work, we propose a search for a single photon at \texttt{FASER} and \texttt{FASER2}, produced from decays of bino-like, sub-GeV lightest neutralinos in the theoretical framework of the R-parity-violating (RPV) Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We consider a list of representative benchmark scenarios with one or two non-vanishing RPV couplings. The photon has an energy $\mathcal{O}\left(0.1\right)-\mathcal{O}\left(1\right)$ TeV. We find a sensitivity reach for RPV couplings beyond the current bounds by orders of magnitude at \texttt{FASER} and \texttt{FASER2}.
In the minimal supersymmetric standard model extended by including right-handed neutrinos with see-saw mechanism, the neutrino Yukaka couplings can be as large as the top-quark Yukawa couplings and thus the neutrino/sneutrino may cause sizable effects in Higgs boson self-energy loops. Our explicit one-loop calculations show that the neutrino/sneutrino effects may have an opposite sign to top/stop effects and thus lighten the lightest Higgs boson. If the soft-breaking mass of the right-handed neutrino is very large (at the order of Majorana mass scale), such as in the split-SUSY scenario, the e…
We present a dilaton dominated scenario for supersymmetry breaking in a recently constructed realistic superstring inspired model with an anomalous U(1) symmetry. Supersymmetry is broken via gaugino condensation due to a confining SU(Nc) gauge group in the hidden sector. In particular, we find that by imposing on the model the phenomenological constraint of the absence of observed flavor changing neutral currents, there is a range of parameters related to the hidden sector and the Kahler potential for which we obtain a low energy spectrum consistent with present experimental bounds. As an illu…
Sneutrino-antisneutrino oscillation can be observed at the LHC by studying a charge asymmetry of the leptons in the final states. We demonstrate this in the context of an anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking model which can give rise to a large oscillation probability. The preferred region of the parameter space is characterized by the presence of a sneutrino next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle and a stau lightest supersymmetric particle. We show that the signals studied here have certain correlations with the pattern of the sneutrino oscillation.
We consider a five-dimensional brane world scenario where the fifth dimension is compactified on $S^1/Z_2$. We show that the familiar four-dimensional cosmology on our brane is easily recovered during a primordial stage of inflation if supersymmetry is exploited. Even if some vacuum energy density appears localized on our three brane, heavy supersymmetric bulk fields adjust themselves and acquire a nontrivial configuration along the extra-dimension. This phenomenon redistributes uniformly the energy density across the bulk and the resulting energy-momentum tensor does not display any singulari…
Sneutrino-antisneutrino oscillation can be observed at the LHC by studying a charge asymmetry of the leptons in the final states. In this talk, we demonstrate this in the context of an anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking model which can give rise to a large oscillation probability. The preferred region of the parameter space is characterized by the presence of a sneutrino next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle and a stau lightest supersymmetric particle. We show that the signals studied here have certain correlations with the pattern of the sneutrino oscillation.
Extra vector-like matter with both electroweak-singlet masses and large Yukawa couplings can significantly raise the lightest Higgs boson mass in supersymmetry through radiative corrections. I consider models of this type that involve a large Yukawa coupling between weak isotriplet and isodoublet chiral supermultiplets. The particle content can be completed to provide perturbative gauge coupling unification, in several different ways. The impact on precision electroweak observables is shown to be acceptably small, even if the new particles are as light as the current experimental bounds of ord…
In theories with gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking, the scalar tau, (${\tilde τ_1}$) is the lightest observable superpartner for part of the parameter space. At LEP 2, the production of such a $\tilde τ_1$ pair and their subsequent decays give rise to a pair of $τ$ leptons plus missing energy from the unobserved gravitinos. The angular distributions of the $τ$'s are different from those arising from the production and decay of W pairs, and thus will constitute an interesting signal for supersymmetry. We also consider ${\tilde τ_1}$ pair production in the complementary part of parameter spa…
We demonstrate that electroweak baryogenesis can occur in a supersymmetric model with an exact R-symmetry. The minimal R-symmetric supersymmetric model contains chiral superfields in the adjoint representation, giving Dirac gaugino masses, and an additional set of "R-partner" Higgs superfields, giving R-symmetric μ-terms. New superpotential couplings between the adjoints and the Higgs fields can simultaneously increase the strength of the electroweak phase transition and provide additional tree-level contributions to the lightest Higgs mass. Notably, no light stop is present in this framework,…
We perform a study of neutrinoless double beta ($0νββ$) decay mediated by the lightest neutralino of arbitrary mass in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) under the presence of R-parity violating trilinear interactions. In this scenario, the exchange of the lightest neutralino can result in $0νββ$ decay of either long-range or short-range behaviour, depending on the neutralino mass. Using nuclear matrix elements calculated in the Interacting Boson Model, we use an interpolation between the long- and short-range behaviours with an approximate formula. The non-observation of $0νββ$ …
We propose a new framework for mediating supersymmetry breaking through an extra dimension. It predicts positive scalar masses and solves the supersymmetric flavor problem. Supersymmetry breaks on a ``source'' brane that is spatially separated from a parallel brane on which the standard model matter fields and their superpartners live. The gauge and gaugino fields propagate in the bulk, the latter receiving a supersymmetry breaking mass from direct couplings to the source brane. Scalar masses are suppressed at the high scale but are generated via the renormalization group. We briefly discuss t…
We consider the phenomenology of GMSB models where the lighter stau is the next to lightest supersymmetric particle. In this situation the dominant signals for supersymmetry at the Tevatron are events where two or three high p_T tau leptons accompanied by large missing transverse energy are produced. This leads to signatures that are very different from the photonic signals for GMSB (where the lightest neutralino is the NLSP) and the dilepton and trilepton signals in the usual supergravity models (involving e and/or mu only) that have been investigated extensively. We find that the inclusive 2…
Assuming gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking, we simulate precision measurements of fundamental parameters at a 500 GeV e+e- linear collider in the scenario where a neutralino is the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle. Information on the supersymmetry breaking and the messenger sectors of the theory is extracted from realistic fits to the measured mass spectrum of the Minimal Supersymmetric Model particles and the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle lifetime.
We show that the brane configuration describing the Izawa-Yanagida-Intriligator-Thomas (IYIT) model with gauged U(1) subgroup of the global symmetry contains inconsistent geometry, implying that there exists a stable vacuum where supersymmetry is dynamically broken.
We consider a supersymmetric (SUSY) scenario including right-handed neutrinos, one of whose scalar superpartners is the lightest SUSY particle (LSP). The distinguishing feature in the collider signal of SUSY in such a case is not missing energy but a pair of charged tracks corresponding to the next-to- lightest SUSY particle, when it is, as in the case considered, a stau. Following up on our recent work on neutralino reconstruction in such cases, we explore the possibility of reconstructing charginos, too, through a study of transverse mass distributions in specified final states. The various …
We revisit the issue of gravitational contributions to soft masses in five-dimensional sequestered models. We point out that, unlike for the case of F-type supersymmetry breaking, for D-type breaking these effects generically give positive soft masses squared for the sfermions. This drastically improves model building. We discuss the phenomenological implications of our result.
The lightest mass eigenvalue of a six-dimensional theory compactified on a torus is numerically evaluated in the presence of the brane-localized mass term. The dependence on the cutoff scale $Λ$ is non-negligible even when $Λ$ is two orders of magnitude above the compactification scale, which indicates that the mass eigenvalue is sensitive to the size of the brane, in contrast to five-dimensional theories. We obtain an approximate expression of the lightest mass in the thin brane limit, which well fits the numerical calculations, and clarifies its dependence on the torus moduli parameter $τ$. …
We investigate the phenomenon of brane induced supersymmetry breakdown on orbifolds in the presence of a Scherk-Schwarz mechanism. General consistency conditions are derived for arbitrary dimensions and the results are illustrated in the specific example of a 5-dimensional theory compactified on $S^1/Z_2$. This includes a discussion of the Kaluza-Klein spectrum and the possibility of a brane induced supersymmetry restoration.
We study a class of type I string models with supersymmetry broken on the world-volume of some D-branes and vanishing tree-level potential. Despite the non-supersymmetric spectrum, supersymmetry is non-linearly realized on these D-branes, while it is spontaneously broken in the bulk by Scherk-Schwarz boundary conditions. These models can easily accommodate 3-branes with interesting gauge groups and chiral fermions. We also study the effective field theory and in particular we compute the four-fermion couplings of the localized Goldstino with the matter fermions on the brane.
Supersymmetry breaking via gaugino condensation is studied in vacua of heterotic M-theory with five-branes. We show that supersymmetry is still broken by a global mechanism and that the non-perturbative superpotential takes the standard form. When expressed in terms of low energy fields, a modification arises due to a threshold correction in the gauge kinetic function that depends on five-brane moduli. We also determine the form of the low energy matter field Kahler potential. These results are used to discuss the soft supersymmetry breaking parameters, in particular the question of universali…
We show how to construct chiral tachyon-free perturbative orientifold models, where supersymmetry is broken at the string scale on a collection of branes while, to lowest order, the bulk and the other branes are supersymmetric. In higher orders, supersymmetry breaking is mediated to the remaining sectors, but is suppressed by the size of the transverse space or by the distance from the brane where supersymmetry breaking primarily occurred. This setting is of interest for orbifold models with discrete torsion, and is of direct relevance for low-scale string models. It can guarantee the stabilit…
We have analyzed the interplay between Scherk-Schwarz supersymmetry breaking and general fermion (gaugino or gravitino) mass terms localized on the fixed point branes of the S^1/Z_2 orbifold. Analytic solutions for eigenfunctions and eigenvalues are found in all cases. All results are checked by numerical calculations that make use of regularized δ-functions. Odd and generically also even fermions are discontinuous at the brane fixed points, but in all cases the combination that couples to the brane is continuous. For CP-even brane mass terms supersymmetry restoration can take place when their…
The experimental signatures for low energy supersymmetry breaking are presented. The lightest standard model superpartner is unstable and decays to its partner plus a Goldstino, $G$. For a supersymmetry breaking scale below a few 1000 TeV this decay can take place within a detector, leading to very distinctive signatures. If a neutralino is the lightest standard model superpartner it decays by $χ_1^0 \to γ+ G$, and if kinematically accessible by $χ_1^0 \to (Z^0, h^0, H^0, A^0) + G$. These decays can give rise to displaced vertices. Alternately, if a slepton is the lightest standard model super…
In gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking theories the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle can decay during or after the nucleosynthesis epoch. The decay products such as photons and hadrons can destroy the light element abundances. Restricting the damage that these decays can do leads to constraints on the abundance and lifetime of the NLSP. We compute the freezeout abundance of the NLSP by including all coannhilation thresholds which are particularly important in the case in which the NLSP is the lightest stau. We find that the upper bound on the messenger scale can be as stringent as 10…
We propose a new mechanism for the formation of conical singularities on D-branes by means of recoil resulting from scattering of closed string states propagating in the (large) transverse dimensions. By viewing the (spatial part of the) four-dimensional world as a 3-brane with large transverse dimensions the above mechanism can lead to supersymmetry obstruction at the TeV scale. The vacuum remains supersymmetric while the mass spectrum picks up a supersymmetry obstructing mass splitting. The state with ``broken'' supersymmetry is not an equilibrium ground state, but is rather an excited state…
We study spontaneous supersymmetry breaking induced by brane-localized dynamics in five-dimensional supergravity compactified on S^1/Z_2. We consider a model with gravity in the bulk and matter localized on tensionless branes at the orbifold fixed points. We assume that the brane dynamics give rise to effective brane superpotentials that trigger the supersymmetry breaking. We analyze in detail the super-Higgs effect. We compute the full spectrum and show that the symmetry breaking is spontaneous but nonlocal in the fifth dimension. We demonstrate that the model can be interpreted as a new, non…
It has recently been shown that the Randall-Sundrum brane-world may be obtained from an appropriate doubled D3-brane configuration in type IIB theory. This corresponds, in five dimensions, to a sphere compactification of the original IIB theory with a non-trivial breathing mode supporting the brane. In this paper, we shall study the supersymmetry of this reduction to massive five-dimensional supergravity, and derive the effective supersymmetry transformations for the fermionic superpartners to the breathing mode. We also consider the sphere compactifications of eleven-dimensional supergravity …
In this paper we study dynamical supersymmetry breaking in absence of gravity with the matter content of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. The hidden sector of the theory is a strongly coupled gauge theory, realized in terms of microscopic variables which condensate to form mesons. The supersymmetry breaking scalar potential combines F, D terms with instanton generated interactions in the Higgs-mesons sector. We show that for a large region in parameter space the vacuum breaks in addition to supersymmetry also electroweak gauge symmetry. We furthermore present local D-brane configurat…
In theories in which SUSY is broken on a brane separated from the MSSM matter fields, supersymmetry breaking is naturally mediated in a variety of ways. Absent other light fields in the theory, gravity will mediate supersymmetry breaking through the conformal anomaly. If gauge fields propagate in the extra dimension they, too, can mediate supersymmetry breaking effects. The presence of gauge fields in the bulk motivates us to consider the effects of new messenger fields with holomorphic and non-holomorphic couplings to the supersymmetry breaking sector. These can lead to contributions to the s…
We propose a mechanism for mediating supersymmetry breaking in Type I string constructions. The basic set-up consists of a system of three D-branes: two parallel D-branes, a matter D-brane and a source D-brane, with supersymmetry breaking communicated via a third D-brane, the mediating D-brane, which intersects both of the parallel D-branes. We discuss an example in which the first and second family matter fields correspond to open strings living on the intersection of the matter D-brane and mediating D-brane, while the gauge fields, Higgs doublets and third family matter fields correspond to …
In this note we discuss dynamical mechanisms for brane stabilization in the brane world context. In particular, we consider supersymmetry preserving brane stabilization, and also brane stabilization accompanied by supersymmetry breaking. These mechanisms are realized in some four dimensional N=1 supersymmetric orientifold models. For illustrative purposes we consider two explicit orientifold models previously constructed in hep-th/9806008. In both of these models branes are stabilized at a finite distance from the orientifold planes. In the first model brane stabilization occurs via supersymme…
We revisit the analysis of effective field theories resulting from non-supersymmetric perturbations to supersymmetric flux compactifications of the type-IIB superstring with an eye towards those resulting from the backreaction of a small number of anti-D3-branes. Independently of the background, we show that the low-energy Lagrangian describing the fluctuations of a stack of probe D3-branes exhibits soft supersymmetry breaking, despite perturbations to marginal operators that were not fully considered in some previous treatments. We take this as an indication that the breaking of supersymmetry…
We study the transmission of supersymmetry breaking via gravitational interactions in a five-dimensional brane-world compactified on $S^1/Z_2$. We assume that chiral matter and gauge fields are confined at the orbifold fixed points, where supersymmetry is spontaneously broken by effective brane superpotentials. Using an off-shell supergravity multiplet we integrate out the auxiliary fields and examine the couplings between the bulk supergravity fields and boundary matter fields. The corresponding tree-level shift in the bulk gravitino mass spectrum induces one-loop radiative masses for the bou…
A compactification of 11-dimensional supergravity with two (or more) walls is considered. The whole tower of massive Kaluza-Klein modes along the fifth dimension is taken into account. With the sources on the walls, an explicit composition in terms of Kaluza-Klein modes of massless gravitino (in the supersymmetry preserving case) and massive gravitino (in the supersymmetry breaking case) is obtained. The super-Higgs effect is discussed in detail.
We show how chiral type I models whose tadpole conditions have no supersymmetric solution can be consistently defined introducing antibranes with non-supersymmetric world volumes. At tree level, the resulting stable non-BPS configurations correspond to tachyon-free spectra, where supersymmetry is broken at the string scale on some (anti)branes but is exact in the bulk, and can be further deformed by the addition of brane-antibrane pairs of the same type. As a result, a scalar potential is generated, that can stabilize some radii of the compact space. This setting has the novel virtue of linkin…
In models with low-energy supersymmetry breaking, it is well-known that charged sleptons can be significantly lighter than the lightest neutralino, with the gravitino and lighter stau being the lightest and next-to-lightest supersymmetric particles respectively. We give analytical formulas for the three-body decays of right-handed selectrons and smuons into final states involving a tau, a stau, and an electron or muon, which are relevant in this scenario. We find that the three-body decays dominate over much of the parameter space, but the two-body decays into a lepton and a gravitino can comp…
We address dynamical supersymmetry breaking within a N=1 supersymmetric Standard-like Model based on a Z_2 x Z_2 Type IIA orientifold with intersecting D6-branes. The model possesses an additional, confining gauge sector with the USp(2)_A x USp(2)_B x USp(4) gauge group, where the gaugino condensation mechanism allows for the breaking of supersymmetry and stabilizes moduli. We derive the leading contribution to the non-perturbative effective superpotential and determine numerically the minima of the supergravity potential. These minima break supersymmetry and fix two undetermined moduli, which…
A new model for the origin of dark energy is proposed based on the Casimir effect in a supersymmetry-breaking brane-world. Supersymmetry is assumed to be preserved in the bulk while broken on a 3-brane. Due to the boundary conditions imposed on the compactified extra dimensions, there is an effective Casimir energy induced on the brane. The net Casimir energy contributed from the graviton and the gravitino modes as a result of supersymmetry-breaking on the brane is identified as the observed dark energy, which in our construction is a cosmological constant. We show that the smallness of the co…
We compute the supergravity loop contributions to the visible sector scalar masses in the simplest 5D `brane-world' model. Supersymmetry is assumed to be broken away from the visible brane and the contributions are UV finite due to 5D locality. We perform the calculation with N = 1 supergraphs, using a formulation of 5D supergravity in terms of N = 1 superfields. We compute contributions to the 4D effective action that determine the visible scalar masses, and we find that the mass-squared terms are negative.
