The redshifted 21-cm line of distant neutral H atoms provides a probe of the cosmic ``dark ages'' and the epoch of reionization (``EOR'') which ended them. The radio continuum produced by this redshifted line can be seen in absorption or emission against the CMB at meterwaves, yielding information about the thermal and ionization history of the universe and the primordial density perturbation spectrum that led to galaxy and large-scale structure formation. Observing this 21-cm background is a great challenge. A new generation of low-frequency radio arrays is currently under development to search for this background. Accurate theoretical predictions of the spectrum and anisotropy of this background, necessary to guide and interpret future observations, are also quite challenging. It is necessary to model the inhomogeneous reionization of the intergalactic medium and determine the spin temperature of the 21-cm transition and its variations in time and space as it decouples from the temperature of the CMB. Here, we focus on just a few of the predictions for the 21-cm background from the EOR, based on our newest, large-scale simulations of patchy reionization. These simulations are the first with enough N-body particles (from 5 to 29 billion) and radiative transfer rays to resolve the formation of and trace the ionizing radiation from each of the millions of dwarf galaxies believed responsible for reionization, down to 10^8 M_solar, in a cubic volume large enough (90 and 163 comoving Mpc on a side) to make meaningful statistical predictions of the fluctuating 21-cm background. Emission lines in hydrogen can be used to measure the approximate redshift of the reionization of the universe. This is an important measurement given the lack of a convincing theoretical prediction of this epoch. There is a rapid change in absorption at the reionization event, which can leave sharp features in the spectrum of recombining hydrogen. These features in the near infrared background permit us to measure the redshift at which reionization occurs. We have calculated these signals based on numerical simulations of the Lambda-CDM cosmogony.
We study the effect of a prolonged epoch of reionization on the angular power spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background. Typically reionization studies assume a sudden phase transition, with the intergalactic gas moving from a fully neutral to a fully ionized state at a fixed redshift. Such models are at odds, however, with detailed investigations of reionization, which favor a more extended transition. We have modified the code CMBFAST to allow the treatment of more realistic reionization histories and applied it to data obtained from numerical simulations of reionization. We show that the …
The delay in light travel time along the line of sight generates an anisotropy in the power spectrum of 21cm brightness fluctuations from the epoch of reionization. We show that when the fluctuations in the neutral hydrogen fraction become non-linear at the later stages of reionization, the light-cone anisotropy becomes of order unity on scales >50 comoving Mpc. During this period the density fluctuations and the associated anisotropy generated by peculiar velocities are negligible in comparison.
We study the observability of the reionization epoch through the 21 cm hyperfine transition of neutral hydrogen. We use a high-resolution cosmological simulation (including hydrodynamics) together with a fast radiative transfer algorithm to compute the evolution of 21 cm emission from the intergalactic medium (IGM) in several different models of reionization. We show that the mean brightness temperature of the IGM drops from dT_b~25 mK to dT_b~0.01 mK during overlap (over a frequency interval of ~25 MHz), while the root mean square brightness temperature fluctuations on small scales drop abrup…
The nature of Gamma-Ray Burst progenitors is still a debated issue, but consensus is growing on the association of GRBs with massive stars. Furthermore, current models for the reionization of the universe consider massive Pop--III stars as the sources of the ionizing photons. There could then be a natural link between GRBs and reionization. The reionization epoch can be measured through prompt IR spectral observations of high redshift GRBs. For this, GRBs are better than quasars: they produce a smaller HII region even if they are much brighter than quasars (but for a much shorter time) and the…
We use numerical simulations of hydrogen reionization by stellar sources in the context of LCDM cosmogonies to investigate the 21 (1+z) cm radio signal expected from the diffuse intergalactic medium (IGM) prior to the epoch of reionization breakthrough at redshift z_ion. Two reionization scenarios are analyzed in details: an `early reionization' case with z_ion~13, consistent with the recent discovery by the WMAP satellite of a large optical depth to Thomson scattering, and a `late reionization' case with z_ion~8. It is a generic prediction of these models that the background of Lyalpha photon…
Discovery of the cosmic reionization epoch would represent a significant milestone in cosmology. We present Keck spectroscopy of the quasar SDSS 1044-0125, at z = 5.73. The spectrum shows a dramatic increase in the optical depth at observed wavelengths lambda >~7550 A, corresponding to z_abs >~ 5.2. Only a few small, narrow transmission regions are present in the spectrum beyond that point, and out to the redshifts where the quasar signal begins. We interpret this result as a signature of the trailing edge of the cosmic reionization epoch, which we estimate to occur around <z> ~ 6 (as indeed c…
We show that the gaseous halos of collapsed objects introduce a substantial cumulative opacity to ionizing radiation, even after the smoothly distributed hydrogen in the intergalactic medium has been fully reionized. This opacity causes a delay of around unity in redshift between the time of the overlap of ionized bubbles in the intergalactic medium and the lifting of complete Gunn-Peterson Lyman alpha absorption. The minihalos responsible for this screening effect are not resolved by existing numerical simulations of reionization.
Preliminary results are presented from a simple, single-antenna experiment designed to measure the all-sky radio spectrum between 100 and 200 MHz. The system used an internal comparison-switching scheme to reduce non-smooth instrumental contaminants in the measured spectrum to 75 mK. From the observations, we place an initial upper limit of 450 mK on the relative brightness temperature of the redshifted 21 cm contribution to the spectrum due to neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM) during the epoch of reionization, assuming a rapid transition to a fully ionized IGM at a redshift o…
Statistical observations of the epoch of reionization (EOR) power spectrum provide a rich data set for understanding the transition from the cosmic "dark ages" to the ionized universe we see today. EOR observations have become an active area of experimental cosmology, and three first generation observatories--MWA, PAST, and LOFAR--are currently under development. In this paper we provide the first quantitative calculation of the three dimensional power spectrum sensitivity, incorporating the design parameters of a planned array. This calculation is then used to explore the constraints these fi…
We investigate the constraint on the abundance of primordial black holes (PBHs) and the spectral index $n$ of primeval density perturbations given by the ionizing photon background at the epoch of reionization. Within the standard inflationary cosmogony, we show that the spectral index $n$ of the power-law power spectrum of primeval density perturbations should be $n<$1.27. Since the universe is still optical thick at the reionization redshift $z\sim 6$ - 8, this constraint is independent of the unknown parameter of reheating temperature of the inflation. The ionizing photon background from th…
Recent theoretical developments for observing the Epoch of Reionization (EOR) have concentrated on the power spectrum signature of redshifted 21 cm emission. These studies have demonstrated the great potential of statistical EOR observations, however, the sensitivity calculations for proposed low frequency radio arrays have been highly approximate. The formalism developed for interferometric measurements of the cosmic microwave background can be extended to three dimensions to naturally incorporate the line-of-sight information inherent in the EOR signal. In this paper we demonstrate how to ac…
We present sensitivity forecasts for the PAST 21cm reionization observations and compare these with the measured sensitivity of a prototype array. We discuss the likely epoch-of-reionization structures and the redshifts that can be observed, and conclude that a 10,000 antenna PAST will be able to image ionized structures with its 1 million pixel map at 6<z<20. The angular scales of the images to be produced span from 5 arc minutes to 10 degrees. The effect of potential foreground contaminants are analyzed. All known extra-terrestial foregrounds have power law continuum spectra, and can be mode…
Statistical observations of the Epoch of Reionization using the 21 cm line of neutral hydrogen have the potential to revolutionize our understanding of structure formation and the first luminous objects. However, these observations are complicated by a host of strong foreground sources. Several foreground removal techniques have been proposed in the literature, and it has been assumed that these would be used in combination to reveal the Epoch of Reionization (EOR) signal. By studying the characteristic subtraction errors of the proposed foreground removal techniques, we identify an additional…
We propose a method to study the epoch of reionization based on the possible observation of 2p--2s fine structure lines from the neutral hydrogen outside the cosmological H {\sc ii} regions enveloping QSOs and other ionizing sources in the reionization era. We show that for parameters typical of luminous sources observed at $z \simeq 6.3$ the strength of this signal, which is proportional to the H {\sc i} fraction, has a brightness temperature $\simeq 20 μK$ for a fully neutral medium. The fine structure line from this redshift is observable at $ν\simeq 1 \rm GHz$ and we discuss prospects for …
We use a compilation of cosmic microwave anisotropy data to constrain the epoch of reionization in the Universe, as a function of cosmological parameters. We consider spatially-flat cosmologies, varying the matter density $Ω_0$ (the flatness being restored by a cosmological constant), the Hubble parameter $h$ and the spectral index $n$ of the primordial power spectrum. Our results are quoted both in terms of the maximum permitted optical depth to the last-scattering surface, and in terms of the highest allowed reionization redshift assuming instantaneous reionization. For critical-density mode…
We investigate the dependence of the epoch of reionization on the properties of cosmological perturbations, in the context of cosmologies permitted by WMAP. We compute the redshift of reionization using a simple model based on the Press-Schechter approximation. For a power-law initial spectrum we estimate that reionization is likely to occur at a redshift $z_{reion} = 17^{+10}_{-7}$, consistent with the WMAP determination based on the temperature-polarization cross power spectrum. We estimate the delay in reionization if there is a negative running of the spectral index, as weakly indicated by…
We perform a new estimate of the high energy neutrinos expected from GRBs associated with the first generation of stars in light of new models and constraints on the epoch of reionization and a more detailed evaluation of the neutrino emission yields. We also compare the diffuse high energy neutrino background from Population III stars with the one from "ordinary stars" (Population II), as estimated consistently within the same cosmological and astrophysical assumptions. In disagreement with previous literature, we find that high energy neutrinos from Population III stars will not be observabl…
We compute the secondary CMBR anisotropy signal from the reionization of the universe in the presence of tangled magnetic fields. We consider the tangled magnetic-field-induced scalar, vector, and tensor modes for our analysis. The most interesting signal for l<10 arise from tensor perturbations. In particular, we show that the enhancement observed by WMAP in the TE cross-correlation signal for l<10 could be explained by tensor TE cross-correlation from tangled magnetic fields generated during the inflationary epoch for magnetic field strength B_0=4.5*10^{-9}G and magnetic field power spectrum…
GRBs are expected to occur at redshifts far higher than the highest quasar redshifts so far detected. And unlike quasars, GRB afterglows may provide "clean" probes of the epoch of reionization because no complications (such as the presence of a strong Ly-alpha emission line) or "proximity effects" (such as the Stromgren sphere produced by ionizing photons from the quasar) are expected. Thus NIR and optical observations of GRB afterglows may provide unique information about the epoch of reionization. In particular, the flux at wavelengths shortward of Ly-alpha provides a direct measure of the d…
We study the reionization of Helium II by quasars using a numerical approach that combines 3D radiative transfer calculations with cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. Sources producing the ionizing radiation are selected according to an empirical quasar luminosity function and are assigned luminosities according to their intrinsic masses. We present models in which these parameters are varied and examine characteristics of the resultant reionization process that distinguish the various cases. In addition, we extract artificial spectra from the simulations and quantify statistical properti…
We reconsider the problem of the cosmological reionization due to stellar sources. Using a method similar to that developed by Haiman & Loeb (1997), we investigate the effect of changing the stellar models and the stellar spectra adopted for deriving the ionizing photon production rate. In particular, we study the consequences of adopting zero metallicity stars, which is the natural choice for the first stellar populations. We construct young isochrones representative of Population III stars from existing sets of evolutionary models (Forieri 1982; Cassisi & Castellani 1993) and calculate a sui…
The Universe became fully reionized, and observable optically, at a time corresponding to redshift z~6.5, so it is only by studying the HI and molecular absorption lines against higher-redshift, radio-loud sources that one can hope to make detailed studies of the earliest stages of galaxy formation. At present no targets for such studies are known. In these proceedings we describe a survey which is underway to find radio-loud quasars at z > 6.5.

We consider the polarization of 21cm line radiation from the epoch of reionization due to both intrinsically polarized emission and secondary mechanisms. We argue that Thomson scattering of the 21cm quadrupole by the reionized universe is likely to produce the largest effect. The 21cm quadrupole is sourced by baryonic density fluctuations and the fluctuations in the ionization fraction due to discrete \ion{H}{2} regions. Since Thomson scattering produces only E-type polarization and is achromatic, its unique fingerprint can in principle be separated from foregrounds associated with polarized s…
The recent observations of cross temperature-polarization power spectra of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) made by the WMAP satellite are in better agreement with a high value of the Thomson scattering optical depth τ\approx 0.17. This value is close to τ= 0.3, which is taken as the upper limit in the parameter extraction analysis made by the WMAP team. However, models with τ\sim 0.3 provide a good fit to current CMB data and are not significantly excluded when combined with Large Scale Structure data. By making use of a self-consistent reionization model, we verify the astrophysical fea…
The reionization of the Universe is expected to leave a signal in the form of a sharp step in the spectrum of the sky. If reionization occurs at 5 < z < 20, a feature should appear in the radio sky at 70 - 240 MHz due to redshifted HI 21-cm line emission, accompanied by another feature in the optical/near-IR at 0.7 - 2.6 micron due to hydrogen recombination radiation. The expected amplitude is well above fundamental detection limits, and the sharpness of the feature may make it distinguishable from variations due to terrestrial, galactic and extragalactic foregrounds. Because this is essential…
We have modelled the process of reionization of the IGM by photoionization by galaxies, in order to predict the epoch of reionization. We use a sophisticated semi-analytic model to track the formation of galaxies. Our study represents a much more complete and physically consistent modelling of reionization than has been conducted in the past, containing significant improvements in the modelling of the collapse of baryons into dark matter halos, and in the model for the cooling and condensation of gas within halos (including photoheating from a self-consistently computed ionizing background and…
We investigate the 21 cm emission from the epoch between reionization z_r and Gunn-Peterson transparency z_{gp}. According to the lognormal model of the thermal history around reionization, hydrogen clouds in z_r > z > z_{gp} are hot and a predominant part of baryonic gas is ionized, but still opaque to Ly-alpha photons. Therefore, 21 cm emission is a distinctive characteristic of this epoch. We show that the 21 cm emission comes from both uncollapsed and collapsing hydrogen clouds. The spatial distribution of the brightness temperature excess $δT_b$ is highly non-Gaussian. It consists of spik…
At the epoch of reionization, when the high-redshift inter-galactic medium (IGM) is being enriched with metals, the 63.2 micron fine structure line of OI is pumped by the ~ 1300 AA soft UV background and introduces a spectral distortion in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Here we use a toy model for the spatial distribution of neutral oxygen, assuming metal bubbles surround dark matter halos, and compute the fluctuations of this distortion, and the angular power spectrum it imprints on the CMB. We discuss the dependence of the power spectrum on the velocity of the winds polluting the IGM…
The HI distribution at the epoch of reionization (EOR) is largely determined by the sizes and distribution of the ionized regions. In the scenario where the ionized regions have comoving sizes of the order of a few Mpc, the large scale statistical properties of the HI distribution are dominated by the Poisson noise of the discrete ionized regions, and it is highly non-Gaussian. We investigate the possibility of probing reionization by studying these non-Gaussian features using future radio interferometric observations of redshifted 21 cm HI radiation. We develop a formalism relating correlatio…
The emission from neutral hydrogen (HI) clouds in the post-reionization era (z < 6), too faint to be individually detected, is present as a diffuse background in all low frequency radio observations below 1420 MHz. The angular and frequency fluctuations of this radiation (~ 1 mK) is an important future probe of the large scale structures in the Universe. We show that such observations are a very effective probe of the background cosmological model and the perturbed Universe. In our study we focus on the possibility of determining the redshift space distortion parameter, coordinate distance and…
Detecting redshifted 21cm emission from neutral hydrogen in the early Universe promises to give direct constraints on the epoch of reionization (EoR). It will, though, be very challenging to extract the cosmological signal (CS) from foregrounds and noise which are orders of magnitude larger. Fortunately, the signal has some characteristics which differentiate it from the foregrounds and noise, and we suggest that using the correct statistics may tease out signatures of reionization. We generate mock datacubes simulating the output of the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) EoR experiment. These cubes …
Reducing the power on small scales relative to the `standard' LCDM model alleviates a number of possible discrepancies with observations, and is favored by the recent analysis of WMAP plus galaxy and Lyman-alpha forest data. Here, we investigate the epoch of reionization in several models normalized to WMAP on large scales, and with sufficiently reduced power on small scales to solve the halo concentration and substructure problems. These include a tilted model, the WMAP running-index model, and a Warm Dark Matter model. We assume that the Universe was reionized by stellar sources comprised of…
We show that near-infrared observations of the red side of the Ly-alpha line from a single gamma ray burst (GRB) afterglow cannot be used to constrain the global neutral fraction of the intergalactic medium (IGM), x_H, at the GRB's redshift to better than ~0.3. Some GRB sight-lines will encounter more neutral hydrogen than others at fixed x_H owing to the patchiness of reionisation. GRBs during the epoch of reionization will often bear no discernible signature of a neutral IGM in their afterglow spectra. We discuss the constraints on x_H from the z = 6.3 burst, GRB050904, and quantify the prob…
We summarize existing constraints on the epoch of reionization and discuss the observational probes that are sensitive to the process. We focus on the role large scale polarization can play. Polarization probes the integrated optical depth across the entire epoch of reionization. Future missions such as Planck and CMBPol will greatly enhance our knowledge of the reionization history, allowing us to measure the time evolution of the ionization fraction. As large scale polarization probes high redshift activity, it can best constrain models where the Universe was fully or partially ionized at ea…
We report the discovery of a Lyman-alpha-emitting galaxy at redshift z=6.545 serendipitously identified in the course of spectroscopic follow-up of hard X-ray sources on behalf of the Serendipitous Extragalactic X-Ray Source Identification (SEXSI) survey. The line flux of the galaxy, 2.1e-17 erg/cm2/s, is similar to line fluxes probed by narrow-band imaging surveys; the 5.2 square-arcminutes surveyed implies a surface density of z~6.5 Lyman-alpha emitters somewhat higher than that inferred from narrow-band surveys. This source marks the sixth Lyman-alpha-emitting galaxy identified at z~6.5, a …
We investigate the all-sky signal in redshifted atomic hydrogen (HI) line from the reionization epoch. HI can be observed in both emission and absorption depending on the ratio of Lyman-$α$ to ionizing flux and the spectrum of the radiation in soft xray. We also compute the signal from pre-reionization epoch and show that within the uncertainty in cosmological parameters, it is fairly robust. The main features of HI signal can be summarized as: (a) The pre-ionized HI can be seen in absorption for $ν\simeq 10\hbox{--}40 \rm MHz$; the maximum signal strength is $\simeq 70\hbox{--}100 \rm mK$. (b…
We investigate the volume growth of ionized regions around UV photon sources with the WENO algorithm, which is an effective solver of photon kinetics in the phase space described by the radiative transfer equation. We show that the volume growth rate, either of isolated ionized regions or of clustered regions in merging, generally consists of three phases: fast or relativistic growth phase at the early stage, slow growth phase at the later stage, and a transition phase between the fast and slow phases. We also show that the volume growth of ionized regions around clustered sources with intensi…
Reionization is thought to be dominated by low mass galaxies, while direct observations of resolved galaxies probe only the most massive, rarest objects. The cross-correlation between fluctuations in the surface brightness of the cumulative Ly-alpha emission (which serves as a proxy for the star formation rate) and the redshifted 21cm signal from neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM), will directly probe the causal link between the production of ionizing photons in galaxies and the reionization of the IGM. We discuss the prospects for detecting this cross-correlation for unresolve…
We study the process of cosmic reionization and estimate the ionizing background in the IGM using the Lyman series absorption in the spectra of the four quasars at 5.7<z<6.3 discovered by the SDSS. We derive the evolution of the ionizing background at high redshifts, using both semi-analytic techniques and cosmological simulations to model the density fluctuations in the IGM. The existence of the complete Ly alpha Gunn-Peterson trough in the spectrum of the z=6.28 quasar SDSS 1030+0524 indicates a photoionization rate Gamma_{-12} at z~6 lower than 0.08, at least a factor of 6 smaller than the …
I present a weak lensing sensitivity estimate for upcoming high redshift (epoch of reionization and beyond) 21cm surveys. Instruments such as PAST, LOFAR and SKA should be able to measure the weak lensing power spectrum to precisions far exceeding conceivable optical surveys. Three types of sources are detectable, which include the re-ionization stromgren spheres, large scale structure, and minihalos. Tomography allows the measurement of the time evolution of the dark matter power spectrum. Raw sensitivities allow measurement of many cosmological parameters, including dark energy, neutrino mas…
Proposed 21 cm cosmology observatories for studying the epoch of reionization (z ~6-15) and dark energy (z ~0-6) envision compact arrays with tens of thousands of antenna elements. Fully correlating this many elements is computationally expensive using traditional XF or FX correlators, and has led some groups to reconsider direct imaging/FFT correlators. In this paper we develop a variation of the direct imaging correlator we call the MOFF correlator. The MOFF correlator shares the computational advantages of a direct imaging correlator, while avoiding a number of its shortcomings. In particul…
