I calculate the classical effects induced by an isotropic mass loss of a body on the orbital motion of a test particle around it; the present analysis is also valid for a variation of the Newtonian constant of gravitation. I perturbatively obtain negative secular rates for the osculating semimajor axis, the eccentricity and the mean anomaly, while the argument of pericenter does not undergo secular precession; the node and the inclination i remain unchanged. The anomalistic period is different from the Keplerian one, being larger than it. The true orbit, instead, expands, as shown by a numerical integration of the equations of motion in Cartesian coordinates; in fact, this is in agreement with the seemingly counter-intuitive decreasing of the semimajor axis and the eccentricity because they refer to the osculating Keplerian ellipses which approximate the trajectory at each instant. A comparison with the results obtained with different approaches by other researchers is made. General relativity induces positive secular rates of the semimajor axis and the eccentricity completely negligible in the present and future evolution of the solar system.
In this paper we address the following question: do the recent advances in the orbit determination of the major natural satellites of Saturn obtained with the analysis of the first data sets from the Cassini mission allow to detect the general relativistic gravitoelectric orbital precessions of such moons? The answer is still negative. The present-day down-track accuracy would be adequate for Mimas, Enceladus, Thetys, Dione, Rhea and Titan and inadequate for Hyperion, Iapetus and Phoebe. Instead, the size of the systematic errors induced by the mismodelling in the key parameters of the Saturni…
We investigate the relativistic effects in the orbital motion of the exoplanet HD80606b with a high eccentricity of $e\simeq0.93$ .We propose a method to detect these effects (notably the orbital precession) based on measuring the successive eclipse and transit times of the exoplanet. In the case of HD80606b, we find that in ten years (after approximately 33 periods) the instants of transits and eclipses are delayed with respect to the Newtonian prediction by about three minutes due to relativistic effects. These effects can be detected by comparing at different epochs the time difference betw…
In the framework of vector model of spin, we discuss the problem of a covariant formalism \cite{Pomeranskii1998} concerning the discrepancy between relativistic and Pauli Hamiltonians. We show how the spin-induced non commutativity of a position accounts the discrepancy on the classical level, without appeal to the Dirac equation and Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation.
We analyze the coupling between the internal degrees of freedom of neutron stars in a close binary, and the stars' orbital motion. Our analysis is based on the method of matched asymptotic expansions and is valid to all orders in the strength of internal gravity in each star, but is perturbative in the ``tidal expansion parameter'' (stellar radius)/(orbital separation). At first order in the tidal expansion parameter, we show that the internal structure of each star is unaffected by its companion, in agreement with post-1-Newtonian results of Wiseman (gr-qc/9704018). We also show that relativi…
We have made timing observations of binary pulsar PSR B1534+12 with radio telescopes at Arecibo, Green Bank, and Jodrell Bank. By combining our new observations with data collected up to seven years earlier, we obtain a significantly improved solution for the astrometric, spin, and orbital parameters of the system. For the first time in any binary pulsar system, no fewer than five relativistic or "post-Keplerian" orbital parameters are measurable with useful accuracies in a theory-independent way. We find the orbital period of the system to be decreasing at a rate close to that expected from g…
We derive closed formulas for the mass and spin parameters of a Kerr black hole in terms of a minimal quantity of observational data: the red-/blue-shifts of photons emitted by massive particles (stars) moving on geodesics around the black hole and their respective orbital radius. It turns out that given a set of two (three) stars revolving around the black hole, these formulas involve just eight (twelve) observational data. For the case of a single star orbiting the black hole we need a minimal set of four observational measurements to analytically determine both parameters.
General relativistic effects in the weak field approximation are calculated for electromagnetic Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams. The current work is an extension of previous work on the precession of a spinning neutral particle in the weak gravitational field of an optical vortex. In the current work, the metric perturbation is extended to all coordinate configurations and includes gravitational effects from circular polarization and intrinsic hyperbolic momentum. The final metric reveals frame-dragging effects due to intrinsic spin angular momentum (SAM), orbital angular momentum (OAM), and spin…
The Galactic Center star cluster, known as S-stars, is a perfect source of relativistic phenomena observations. The stars are located in the strong field of relativistic compact object Sgr A* and are moving with very high velocities at pericenters of their orbits. In this work we consider motion of several S-stars by using the Parameterized Post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism of General Relativity (GR) and Post-Newtonian (PN) equations of motion of the Feynman's quantum-field gravity theory, where the positive energy density of the gravity field can be measured via the relativistic pericenter shift…
Static spherically symmetric anisotropic source has been studied for the Einstein-Maxwell field equations assuming the erstwhile cosmological constant $ Λ$ to be a space-variable scalar, viz., $ Λ= Λ(r) $. Two cases have been examined out of which one reduces to isotropic sphere. The solutions thus obtained are shown to be electromagnetic in origin as a particular case. It is also shown that the generally used pure charge condition, viz., $ ρ+ p_r = 0 $ is not always required for constructing electromagnetic mass models.
A general relativistic version of the Euler equation for perfect fluid hydrodynamics is applied to a system of two neutron stars orbiting each other. In the quasi-equilibrium phase of the evolution of this system, a first integral of motion can be derived for certain velocity fields of the neutron star fluid including the (academic) case of co-rotation with respect to the orbital motion (synchronized binaries) and the realistic case of counter-rotation with respect to the orbital motion. The velocity field leading to this latter configuration can be computed by solving three-dimensional vector…
A review of modern VLTI observations of the orbital motion of closest stars to the relativistic compact object Sgr A* and its ability to test gravitation theories in the conditions of Post-Newtonian approximation. The observed orbital parameters, second order Doppler effect and gravitational redshift, measured for several S-stars, are compared with theoretical PN predictions.
Results from regular monitoring of relativistic compact binaries like PSR 1913+16 are consistent with the dominant (quadrupole) order emission of gravitational waves (GWs). We show that observations associated with the binary black hole central engine of blazar OJ 287 demand the inclusion of gravitational radiation reaction effects beyond the quadrupolar order. It turns out that even the effects of certain hereditary contributions to GW emission are required to predict impact flare timings of OJ 287. We develop an approach that incorporates this effect into the binary black hole model for OJ~2…
We investigate the dynamic stability of inspiraling neutron stars by performing multiple-orbit numerical relativity simulations of the binary neutron star inspiral process. By introducing eccentricities in the orbits of the neutron stars, significant changes in orbital separation are obtained within orbital timescales. We find that as the binary system evolves from apastron to periastron (as the binary separation decreases), the central rest mass density of each star decreases, thus stabilizing the stars against individual prompt collapse. As the binary system evolves from periastron to apastr…
Mass-varying massive gravity allows the graviton mass to vary according to different environments. We investigate neutron star and white dwarf solutions in this theory and find that the graviton mass can become very large near the compact stars and settle down quickly to small cosmological values away the stars, similar to that of black holes in the theory. It is found that there exists a tower of compact star solutions where the graviton mass decreases radially to zero non-trivially. We compute the massive graviton effects on the mass-radius relations of the compact stars, and also compare th…
We analyze the secular evolution of hierarchical triple systems in the post-Newtonian approximation to general relativity. We expand the Newtonian three-body equations of motion in powers of the ratio $a/A$, where $a$ and $A$ are the semimajor axis of the inner binary's orbit and of the orbit of the third body relative to the center of mass of the inner binary, respectively. The leading order "quadrupole" terms, of order $(a/A)^3$ relative to the $1/a^2$ acceleration within the inner binary, are responsible for the well-known Kozai-Lidov oscillations of orbital inclination and eccentricity. Th…
We reexamine non-Einsteinian effects observable in the orbital motion of low-orbit artificial Earth satellites. The motivations for doing so are twofold: (i) recent theoretical studies suggest that the correct theory of gravity might contain a scalar contribution which has been reduced to a small value by the effect of the cosmological expansion; (ii) presently developed space technologies should soon give access to a new generation of satellites endowed with drag-free systems and tracked in three dimensions at the centimeter level. Our analysis suggests that such data could measure two indepe…
We numerically and analytically work out the first-order post-Newtonian (1pN) orbital effects induced on the semimajor axis $a$, the eccentricity $e$, the inclination $I$, the longitude of the ascending node $Ω$, the longitude of perihelion $\varpi$, and the mean longitude at epoch $ε$ of a test particle orbiting its primary, assumed static and spherically symmetric, by a distant massive third body X. For Mercury, the rates of change of the linear trends found are $\dot I_\mathrm{1pN}^\mathrm{X} = -4.3\,\mathrm{microarcseconds\,per\,century}\,\left(μ\mathrm{as\,cty}^{-1}\right)$, $\dotΩ_\mathr…
Due to its relatively large eccentricity and proximity to the Sun, Mercury's orbital motion provides one of the best solar-system tests of relativistic gravity. We emphasize the number of feasible relativistic gravity tests that can be performed within the context of the parameterized weak field and slow motion approximation - a usefulframework for testing modern gravitational theories in the solar system. We discuss a new approximation method, which includes two Eddington parameters $(γ,β)$, proposed for construction of the relativistic equations of motion of extended bodies. Within the prese…

We consider tidal encounters between a white dwarf and an intermediate mass black hole. Both weak encounters and those at the threshold of disruption are modeled. The numerical code combines mesh-based hydrodynamics, a spectral method solution of the self-gravity, and a general relativistic Fermi normal coordinate system that follows the star and debris. Fermi normal coordinates provide an expansion of the black hole tidal field that includes quadrupole and higher multipole moments and relativistic corrections. We compute the mass loss from the white dwarf that occurs in weak tidal encounters.…
Corrections to the relativistic orbits are studied considering higher order approximations induced by gravitomagnetic effects. We discuss in details how such corrections come out taking into account magnetic components in the weak field limit of gravitational field and then the theory of orbits is developed starting from the Newtonian one, the lowest order in the approximation. Finally, the orbital structure and the stability conditions are discussed giving numerical examples. Beside the standard periastron corrections of General Relativity, a new nutation effect is due to the c^{-3} correctio…
At present, 19 double neutron star (DNS) systems are detected by radio timing and 2 merging DNS systems are detected by kilo-hertz gravitational waves. Because of selection effects, none of them has an orbital period $P_b$ in the range of a few tens of minutes. In this paper we consider a multimessenger strategy proposed by Kyutoku et al. (2019), jointly using the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) to detect and study Galactic pulsar-neutron star (PSR-NS) systems with $P_b \sim$ 10-100 min. We assume that we will detect PSR-NS systems by this strateg…
We consider the three dimensional gravitational Vlasov-Poisson (GVP) system in both classical and relativistic cases. The classical problem is subcritical in the natural energy space and the stability of a large class of ground states has been derived by various authors. The relativistic problem is critical and displays finite time blow up solutions. Using standard concentration compactness techniques, we however show that the breaking of the scaling symmetry allows the existence of stable relativistic ground states. A new feature in our analysis which applies both to the classical and relativ…

The laser-tracked geodetic satellites LAGEOS, LAGEOS II and LARES are currently employed, among other things, to measure the general relativistic Lense-Thirring effect in the gravitomagnetic field of the spinning Earth with the hope of providing a more accurate test of such a prediction of the Einstein's theory of gravitation than the existing ones. The secular decay $\dot a$ of the semimajor axes $a$ of such spacecrafts, recently measured in an independent way to a $σ_{\dot a}\approx 0.1-0.01$ m yr$^{-1}$ accuracy level, may indirectly impact the proposed relativistic experiment through its c…
We perform the first general relativistic force-free simulations of neutron star (NS) magnetospheres in orbit about spinning and non-spinning black holes. We find promising precursor electromagnetic emission: typical Poynting luminosities at, e.g., an orbital separation of 6.6 times the NS radius are L ~ 6 x 10^{42} erg/s for a 1.4 solar-mass NS with a 10^{13}G polar magnetic field. The Poynting flux peaks within a broad beam of ~40 degrees in the azimuthal direction and within ~60 degrees from the orbital plane, establishing a possible lighthouse effect. Our calculations, though preliminary, …
The general theory of relativity predicts the relativistic effect in the orbital motions of S-stars which are orbiting around our Milky-way galactic center. The post-Newtonian or higher-order approximated Schwarzschild black hole models have been used by GRAVITY and UCLA galactic center groups to carefully investigate the S2 star's periastron precession. In this paper, we investigate the scalar field effect on the orbital dynamics of S2 star. Hence, we consider a spacetime, namely Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) spacetime which is seeded by a minimally coupled, mass-less scalar field. The novel fe…
We present results of more than three decades of timing measurements of the first known binary pulsar, PSR B1913+16. Like most other pulsars, its rotational behavior over such long time scales is significantly affected by small-scale irregularities not explicitly accounted for in a deterministic model. Nevertheless, the physically important astrometric, spin, and orbital parameters are well determined and well decoupled from the timing noise. We have determined a significant result for proper motion, $μ_α = -1.43\pm0.13$, $μ_δ=-0.70\pm0.13$ mas yr$^{-1}$. The pulsar exhibited a small timing gl…
