We formulate and prove that there are "abundant" in nilpotent orbits in real semisimple Lie algebras, in the following sense. If S denotes the collection of hyperbolic elements corresponding the weighted Dynkin diagrams coming from nilpotent orbits, then S span the maximally expected space, namely, the (-1)-eigenspace of the longest Weyl group element. The result is used to the study of fundamental groups of non-Riemannian locally symmetric spaces.

We give a complete classification of irreducible symmetric spaces for which there exist proper SL(2,R)-actions as isometries, using the criterion for proper actions by T. Kobayashi [Math. Ann. '89] and combinatorial techniques of nilpotent orbits. In particular, we classify irreducible symmetric spaces that admit surface groups as discontinuous groups, combining this with Benoist's theorem [Ann. Math. '96].
We construct families of functions in involution for transverse Poisson structures at nilpotent elements of Lie-Poisson structures on simple Lie algebras by using the argument shift method. Examples show that these families contain completely integrable systems that consist of polynomial functions. It is known that a closed collapsed Riemannian $n$-manifold $(M,g)$ of bounded Ricci curvature and Reifenberg local covering geometry admits a nilpotent structure in the sense of Cheeger-Fukaya-Gromov with respect to a smoothed metric $g(t)$. This expository article is an introduction to the adjoint orbits of complex semisimple groups, primarily in the algebro-geometric and Lie-theoretic contexts, and with a pronounced emphasis on the properties of semisimple and nilpotent orbits. It is intended to build a foundation for more specialized settings in which adjoint orbits feature prominently (ex. hyperkähler geometry, Landau-Ginzburg models, and the theory of symplectic singularities). Also included are a few arguments and observations that, to the author's knowledge, have not yet appeared in the research literature.

In this paper we classify real trivectors in dimension 9. The corresponding classification over the field C of complex numbers was done by Vinberg and Elashvili in 1978. One of the main tools used for their classification was the construction of the representation of SL(9,C) on the space of complex trivectors of C^9 as a theta-representation corresponding to a Z/3Z-grading of the simple complex Lie algebra of type E8.
