Observing massive galaxies at various redshifts is one of the most straightforward and direct approaches towards understanding galaxy formation. There is now largely a consensus that the massive galaxy (M_* > 10^11 M_0) population is fully formed by z~1, based on mass and luminosity functions. However, we argue that the latest data can only rule out number and mass density evolution of a factor of > 2-3 at z < 1.5. We furthermore show that the star formation history of M_* > 10^11 M_0 galaxies reveals that 40+/-5% of galaxies with M_* > 10^11 M_0 at z~1 are undergoing star formation that effectively doubles their stellar mass between z = 0.4 - 1.4. These massive galaxies also undergo 0.9^+0.7_-0.5 major mergers during this same time period.
Based on the catalog of merging galaxies in the Early Data Release (EDR) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the differences of star formation history between merging galaxies and field galaxies are studied statistically by means of three spectroscopic indicators the 4000-Å break strength, the Balmer absorption-line index, and the specific star formation rate. It is found that for early-type merging galaxies the interactions will not induce significant enhancement of the star-formation activity because of its stability and lack of cool gas. On the other hand, late-type merging galaxies alw…
Measurements of the kinematics of merging galaxies are often used to derive dynamical masses, study evolution onto the fundamental plane, or probe relaxation processes. These measurements are often compromised to some degree by strong non-equilibrium motions in the merging galaxies. This talk focuses on the evolution of the kinematics of merging galaxies, and highlights some pitfalls which occur when studying non-equilibrium systems.
A significant fraction of clusters of galaxies are observed to have substructure, which implies that merging between clusters and subclusters is a rather common physical process of cluster formation. It still remains unclear how cluster merging affects the evolution of cluster member galaxies. We report the results of numerical simulations, which show the dynamical evolution of a gas-rich late-type spiral in a merger between a small group of galaxies and a cluster. The simulations demonstrate that time-dependent tidal gravitational field of the merging excites non-axisymmetric structure of the…
The formation and evolution of massive red galaxies form a crucial test of theories of galaxy formation based on hierarchical assembly. In this letter we use observations of the clustering of luminous red galaxies from the Bootes field and N-body simulations to argue that about 1/3 of the most luminous satellite galaxies appear to undergo merging or disruption within massive halos between z~0.9 and z~0.5.
We have used ROSAT PSPC and HRI to study the properties of the soft X-ray emission in a sample of colliding starburst galaxies. Together with data from other spectral ranges (optical, radio and FIR) we investigate the emergence of soft X-ray emission during progressive stages of interaction and merging.
Numerical simulations of cluster mergers reveal many characteristics of the merging process: shock structure and strength, observational signatures of the dynamical state, effects on the mass determination, turbulence and the evolution of the X-ray luminosity and the magnetic field. In this article I review the results obtained from various simulations over the last years.
We present preliminary results of numerical simulations of dissipationless merging of stellar systems, aimed at exploring the consequences of merging between gas free, spheroidal systems. In particular, we study the dynamical and structural characteristics of hierarchical merging between equal mass stellar systems, and we compare the properties of the end-products with the most important structural and dynamical scaling relations obeyed by spheroids. In the explored hierarchy of four successive mergings we find that the FP tilt is marginally conserved, but both the Faber-Jackson and Kormendy r…
We explore the effects of dissipationless merging on the Fundamental Plane of elliptical galaxies by using a N-body code based on a new, high performance numerical scheme (Dehnen 2002). We investigate the extreme cases of galaxy growth by equal mass merging and accretion of small stellar systems; in a subset of simulations we also consider the presence of dark matter halos around the merging galaxies. Curiously, we found that the Fundamental Plane is preserved by major merging, while in the accretion scenario its edge--on thickness is only marginally reproduced, with substantial thickening in …
We present a new catalog of merging galaxies obtained through an automated systematic search routine. The 1479 new pairs of merging galaxies were found in approximately 462 sq deg of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release (SDSS EDR; Stoughton et al. 2002) photometric data, and the pair catalog is complete for galaxies in the magnitude range 16.0 <= g* <= 20. The selection algorithm, implementing a variation on the original Karachentsev (1972) criteria, proved to be very efficient and fast. Merging galaxies were selected such that the inter-galaxy separations were less than the sum of …
The study of cluster populations as tracer of galaxy evolution is now quite possible with 8 m class telescopes and modern instrumentation. The cluster population can be used as a good tracer of the star forming episodes undergone by the merging system. We present two young galaxies mergers NGC3256 and NGC4038, and the studies about the young cluster population on those system. We found that the clusters ages are agree with the mergers age and their metallicities are consistent with them being the progenitors of the old metal rich globulars in ellipticals.
We present the results of numerical simulations which show the formation of blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies from merging between very gas-rich dwarfs with extended HI gas disks. We show that dwarf-dwarf merging can trigger central starbursts and form massive compact cores dominated by young stellar populations. We also show that the pre-existing old stellar components in merger precursor dwarfs can become diffuse low surface brightness components after merging. The compact cores dominated by younger stellar populations and embedded in more diffusely distributed older ones can be morphologica…
We present first results from an HST WFPC2 imaging and STIS spectroscopy program to investigate the structural and star forming properties in the nuclear regions of the Toomre Sequence of merging galaxies. Here we discuss V-band, I-band and H-alpha images of the nuclei. We comment briefly on the connection between the nuclear morphology of the ionized gas and the merger stage.
With the aid of a simple yet robust approach we investigate the influence of dissipationless and dissipative merging on galaxy structure, and the consequent effects on the scaling laws followed by elliptical galaxies. Our results suggest that ellipticals cannot be originated by parabolic merging of low mass spheroids only, even in presence of substantial gas dissipation. However, we also found that scaling laws such as the Faber-Jackson, Kormendy, Fundamental Plane, and the Mbh -sigma relations, when considered over the whole mass range spanned by ellipticals in the local universe, are robust …
Observations indicate that much of the interstellar gas in merging galaxies may settle into extended gaseous disks. Here, I present simulations of disk formation in mergers of gas-rich galaxies. Up to half of the total gas settles into embedded disks; the most massive instances result from encounters in which both galaxies are inclined to the orbital plane. These disks are often warped, many have rather complex kinematics, and roughly a quarter have counter-rotating or otherwise decoupled central components. Disks typically grow from the inside out; infall from tidal tails may continue disk fo…
Subcluster interactions within clusters of galaxies produce shocks that accelerate nonthermal particles. We treat Fermi acceleration of nonthermal electrons and protons by injecting power-law distributions of particles during the merger event, subject to constraints on maximum particle energies. The broadband nonthermal spectrum emitted by accelerated electrons and protons is calculated during and following the subcluster interaction for a standard parameter set. The intensity of gamma-ray emission from primary and secondary processes is calculated and discussed in light of detection capabilit…
We present multi-wavelength observations of the brightest galaxies in four X-ray luminous groups at z~0.37 that will merge to form a cluster comparable in mass to Coma. Ordered by increasing stellar mass, the four brightest group galaxies (BGGs) present a time sequence where BGG-1, 2, and 3 are in merging systems and BGG-4 is a massive remnant [M(stars)=6.7x10^(11) Msun]. BGG-1 and 2 have bright, gravitationally bound companions and BGG-3 has two nuclei separated by only 2.5 kpc, thus merging at z<0.5 increases the BGG mass by >40% (merging timescale<2 Gyr) and V-band luminosity by ~0.4 mag. T…
We report mid-infrared observations of several luminous infrared galaxies (LIGs) carried out with the Infrared Space Observatory. Our sample was chosen to represent different phases of a merger sequence of galaxy-galaxy interaction with special emphasis on early/intermediate stages of merging. The mid-infrared emission of these LIGs shows extended structures for the early and intermediate mergers, indicating that most of the mid-infrared luminosities are not from a central active galactic nucleus (AGN). Both the infrared hardness (indicated by the IRAS 12, 25, and 60 $\micron$ flux density rat…
The galaxy-type CSO (compact symmetric objects) rate from an intermediate large sample PR+CJ1 is found to be consistent with the Sb-Sb merger rate of 4.6% in redshift z<1. The CSO detection rate seems going down when the sample size is increasing, which could not reach the high merger rate in z>1, yet no deep VLBI sample in z>1 is available now.
Explaining the formation and evolution of galaxies is one of the most challenging problems in observational cosmology. Many observations suggest that galaxies we see today could have evolved from the merging of smaller subsystems. Evolution of galaxies tells us how the mass or number density of the lens varies with cosmic time. Merging between the galaxies and the infall of surrounding mass into galaxies are two possible processes that can change the comoving number density of galaxies and/or their mass. We consider five different evolutionary models of galaxies .These models are: Non evolutio…
Using high-resolution SPH numerical simulations, we investigate the effects of gas on the inspiral and merger of a massive black hole binary. This study is motivated by both observational and theoretical work that indicate the presence of large amounts of gas in the central regions of merging galaxies. N-body simulations have shown that the coalescence of a massive black hole binary eventually stalls in a stellar background. However, our simulations suggest that the massive black hole binary will finally merge if it is embedded in a gaseous background. Here we present results in which the gas …
We discuss the merging rates in compact groups of 5 identical elliptical galaxies. All groups have the same mass and binding energy. We consider both cases with individual halos and cases where the halo is common to all galaxies and enveloping the whole group. In the latter situation the merging rate is slower if the halo is more massive. The mass of individual halos has little influence on the merging rates, due to the fact that all galaxies in our simulations have the same mass, and so the more extended ones have a smaller velocity dispersion. Groups with individual halos merge faster than g…
The merging cluster of galaxies A2255 is covered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) survey. In this paper we perform a morphological classification on the basis of the SDSS imaging and spectral data, and investigate the morphological dependence of the star formation rates (SFRs) for these member galaxies. As we expect, a tight correlation between the normalized SFR by stellar mass (SFR/M$_*$) and the H$α$ equivalent width is found for the late-type galaxies in A2255. The correlation of SFR/M$_*$ with the continuum break strength at 4000 Åis also confirmed. The SFR/M$_*$ - M$_*$ correlation…
We present the results of N-body simulations of dissipationless galaxy merging in Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). For comparison, we also studied Newtonian merging between galaxies embedded in dark matter halos, with internal dynamics equivalent to the MOND systems. We found that the merging timescales are significantly longer in MOND than in Newtonian gravity with dark matter, suggesting that observational evidence of rapid merging could be difficult to explain in MOND. However, when two galaxies eventually merge, the MOND merging end-product is hardly distinguishable from the final stell…
A3667, a spectacular merger cluster, was observed by Chandra twice. In this paper we review the main results of the analysis of these observations. In particular we show evidence for the presence in the cluster of a 300 kpc Kelvin-Helmholtz hydrodynamic instability. We discuss the development of such instability and the structure of the intracluster magnetic filed in light of a self-consistent cluster dynamical model.
We investigate the structural, kinematical, and spectrophotometric properties of ``E+A'' galaxies -- those with strong Balmer absorption lines but no significant [OII] emission -- using numerical simulations combined with stellar population synthesis codes. We particularly focus on the two-dimensional (2D) distributions of line-of-sight velocity, velocity dispersion, colors, line index in E+A galaxies formed via the interaction and merging of two gas-rich spirals. Our numerical simulations demonstrate that E+A elliptical galaxies formed by major galaxy merging have positive radial color gradie…
Using data from the DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey and HST/ACS imaging in the Extended Groth Strip, we select nearly 100 interacting galaxy systems including kinematic close pairs and morphologically identified merging galaxies. Spitzer MIPS 24 micron fluxes of these systems reflect the current dusty star formation activity, and at a fixed stellar mass (M_{*}) the median infrared luminosity (L_{IR}) among merging galaxies and close pairs of blue galaxies is twice (1.9 +/- 0.4) that of control pairs drawn from isolated blue galaxies. Enhancement declines with galaxy separation, being strongest in…
We compute the evolution of the space-dependent mass distribution of galaxies in clusters due to binary aggregations by solving a space-dependent Smoluchowski equation. We derive the distribution of intergalactic distance for different ranges of mass (and of corresponding magnitude). We compare the results with the observed distributions, and find that the different degrees of luminosity segregation observed in clusters are well accounted for by our merging model. In addition, the presence of luminosity segregation is related to dynamical effects which also show up in different but connected o…
Gravitational interactions and mergers affect the morphologies and dynamics of galaxies from our Local Group to the limits of the observable universe. Observations of interacting galaxies at low redshifts (z < 0.2) yield detailed information about many of the processes at work. I briefly review these processes and the growing evidence that mergers play a major role in the delayed formation of elliptical and early-type disk galaxies both in the field and in clusters. Low-z observations clearly contradict the notion of a single epoch of E formation at z > 2; instead, E and S0 galaxies continue f…
We report the results of hard X-ray observations of four multinuclei merging infrared luminous galaxies (IRLGs). We selected these four sources for their excess of radio to far-infrared luminosity ratio compared with starburst galaxies. This excess suggests that activity associated with a supermassive black hole (SMBH) contributes strongly to the IRLGs' bolometric luminosities. Although we expect strong hard X-ray emission from the SMBH-driven activity, the radio-excess multinuclei merging IRLGs show considerably smaller hard X-ray luminosities relative to far-infrared (40$-$500 $μ$m) and infr…
We study the properties of hot gaseous halos in 10 nearby ultraluminous IRAS galaxies observed with the ACIS instrument on board Chandra. For all sample galaxies, diffuse soft X-ray emissions are found within ~10 kpc of the central region; their spectra are well fitted by a MEKAL model plus emission lines from alpha-elements and other ions. The temperature of the hot gas is about 0.7 keV and metallicity is about 1 solar. Outside the central region, extended hot gaseous halos are found for nine out of the ten ULIRGs. Most spectra of these extended halos can be fitted with a MEKAL model with a t…
It has been often considered that the dissipative collapse caused by a merger of two gas-rich galaxies is responsible for the intense nuclear starbursts or the nonthermal quasar activity in ultraluminous infrared galaxies due to the efficient fueling induced by it. It is also widely known that Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIGs) are often found in merging systems. Some ULIGs, such as Arp 220, show two compact starburst regions which are considered to be associated with two galactic nuclei in the process of merging. However, since a merger between two galaxies may make only one compact star…
We reanalyze the galaxy-mass correlation function measured by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to obtain host dark matter halo masses at galaxy and galaxy group scales. We extend the data to galaxy clusters in the 2MASS catalog and study the relation between central galaxy luminosity and halo mass. While the central galaxy luminosity scales as ~M^{0.7-0.8} at low masses, the relation flattens to ~M^{<0.3} above ~4x10^{13} M_sun. The total luminosity of galaxies in the halo, however, continues to grow as a power-law ~M^{0.8-0.9}. Starting from the hypothesis that the central galaxies grow by mergin…
We probe to what extent not only the counts of the faint blue galaxies and their redshift distribution but also their z-resolved luminosity functions can be explained in terms of binary merging (aggregations). We present a dynamical theory of such interactions. On this basis we find that ``minimal aggregations'' taking place within large scale structures and triggering starbusts yield rates and timing such as to explain the observations of the local, flat luminosity function and of its progressive rising and steepening for redshifts out to $z\approx 1$. Correspondingly, we predictfaint blue co…
CONTEXT.The mass assembly is believed to be the dominant process of early galaxy formation. This mechanism of galaxy building can proceed either by repeated major mergers with other systems, or by means of accretion of matter from the surrounding regions. AIMS.In this paper we compare the properties of local disk galaxies that appear isolated, i.e. not tidally affected by other galaxies during the last few Gyr within the volume given by cz<= 5000 km/s, with those galaxies at z values from 0.25 to 5. METHODS.Effective radii for 203 isolated galaxies and 1645 galaxies from the RC3 have been coll…
We present the results of the first multi-scale N-Body+SPH simulations of merging galaxies containing central supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and having a spatial resolution of only a few parsecs. Strong gas inflows associated with equal-mass mergers produce non-axisymmetric nuclear disks with masses of order $10^9 M_{\odot}$, resolved by about $10^6$ SPH particles. Such disks have sizes of several hundred parsecs but most of their mass is concentrated within less than $50$ pc. We find that a close SMBH pair forms after the merger. The separation of the two SMBHs then shrinks further owing to…
We present initial results from the first 3-dimensional numerical magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations of magnetic field evolution in merging clusters of galaxies. Within the framework of idealized initial conditions similar to our previous work, we look at the gasdynamics and the magnetic field evolution during a major merger event in order to examine the suggestion that shocks and turbulence generated during a cluster/subcluster merger can produce magnetic field amplification and relativistic particle acceleration and, as such, may play a role in the formation and evolution of cluster-wid…
Modeling interacting galaxies to reproduce observed systems is still a challenge due to the extended parameter space (among other problems). Orbit and basic galaxy parameters can be tackled by fast simulation techniques like the restricted N-body method, applied in the fundamental work by Toomre & Toomre (1972). This approach allows today for the study of millions of models in a short time. One difficulty for the classical restricted N-body method is the missing orbital decay, not allowing for galaxy mergers. Here we present an extension of the restricted N-body method including dynamical fric…
The central bulge of M31 is observed to have two distinct brightness peaks with the separation of $\sim$ 2 pc. Tremaine (1995) recently proposed a new idea that the M31's nucleus is actually a single thick eccentric disk surrounding the central super-massive black hole. In order to explore the origin of the proposed eccentric disk, we numerically investigate the dynamical evolution of a merger between a central massive black hole with the mass of $\sim$ $10^7$ $M_{\odot}$ and a compact stellar system with the mass of $\sim$ $10^6$ $M_{\odot}$ and the size of a few pc in the central 10 pc of a …
We investigated the evolution of the black hole binary formed by the merging of two galaxies each containing a central massive black hole. Our main goal here is to determine if the black hole binary can merge through the hardening by dynamical friction and the gravitational wave radiation. We performed $N$-body simulations of merging of two galaxies with wide range of total number of particles to investigate the effect of the number of particles on the evolution of the black hole binary. We found that the evolution timescale was independent of the number of particles in the galaxy $N$ until th…
We present here the first study of the X-ray properties of an evolutionary sample of merging galaxies. Both ROSAT PSPC and HRI data are presented for a sample of eight interacting galaxy systems, each believed to involve a similar encounter between two spiral discs of approximately equal size. The mergers span a large range in age, from completely detached to fully merged systems. A great deal of interesting X-ray structure is seen, and the X-ray properties of each individual system are discussed in detail. Along the merging sequence, several trends are evident: in the case of several of the i…
Globular cluster systems (GCSs) are vital tools for investigating the violent star formation histories of their host galaxies. This violence could e.g. have been triggered by galaxy interactions or mergers. The basic observational properties of a GCS are its luminosity function and color distributions (number of clusters per luminosity resp. color bin). A large number of observed GCSs show bimodal color distributions, which, by comparison with evolutionary synthesis (ES) models, can be translated into bimodality in metallicity and/or age. An additional uncertainty comes into play when one cons…
We present N-body simulations of elliptical galaxy encounters into dry mergers to study the resulting unbound intergalactic stellar population, in particular that of the post-Main Sequence stars. The systems studied are pairs of spherical galaxies without dark halos. The stellar content of the model galaxies is distributed into mass-bins representing low- and intermediate-mass stars (0.85 -- 8 solar masses) according to Salpeter's initial mass function. Our models follow the dynamical evolution of galaxy encounters colliding head-on from initial low-energy parabolic or high-energy mildly-hyper…
We present the preliminary results of 235 MHz, 327 MHz and 610 MHz observations of the galaxy cluster A3562 in the core of the Shapley Concentration. The purpose of these observations, carried out with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT, Pune, India) was to study the radio halo located at the centre of A3562 and determine the shape of its radio spectrum at low frequencies, in order to understand the origin of this source. In the framework of the re--acceleration model, the preliminary analysis of the halo spectrum suggests that we are observing a young source (few $10^8$ yrs) at the beg…
We present the results of detailed N-body simulations regarding the interaction of four massive globular clusters in the central region of a triaxial galaxy. The systems undergo a full merging event, producing a sort of 'Super Star Cluster' (SSC) whose features are close to those of a superposition of the individual initial mergers. In contrast with other similar simulations, the resulting SSC structural parameters are located along the observed scaling relations of globular clusters. These findings seem to support the idea that a massive SSC may have formed in early phases of the mother galax…
The observational properties of globular cluster systems (GCSs) are vital tools to investigate the violent star formation histories of their host galaxies. This violence is thought to have been triggered by galaxy interactions or mergers. The most basic properties of a GCS are its luminosity function (number of clusters per luminosity bin) and color distributions. A large number of observed GCS show bimodal color distributions, which can be translated into a bimodality in either metallicity and/or age. An additional uncertainty comes into play when one considers extinction. These effects can b…
We present results from N-body + magnetohydrodynamical simulations of merging clusters of galaxies. We find that cluster mergers cause various characteristic magnetic field structures because of the strong bulk flows in the intracluster medium. The moving substructures result in cool regions surrounded by the magnetic field. These will be recognized as magnetized cold fronts in the observational point of view. A relatively ordered magnetic field structure is generated just behind the moving substructure. Eddy-like field configurations are also formed by Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities. These fe…
We present first results of our on-going BIMA Key Project: imaging the CO(1-0) emission from a sample of 10 luminous IR galaxies (LIRGs) that are at various merging stages, with special emphasis on systems apparently in the early/intermediate stages of merging. We present here CO images with $\sim 5''$ resolution. An important result is the recognition of a plausible pre-starburst phase in some early LIRG mergers (e.g., Arp 302 and NGC 6670). Our initial analysis suggests that a merger-induced starburst phase may not begin before the nuclear separation between the merging galaxies reaches roug…
From a Chandra survey of nine interacting galaxy systems the evolution of X-ray emission during the merger process has been investigated. From comparing Lx/Lk and Lfir/Lb it is found that the X-ray luminosity peaks around 300 Myr before nuclear coalescence, even though we know that rapid and increasing star formation is still taking place at this time. It is likely that this drop in X-ray luminosity is a consequence of outflows breaking out of the galactic discs of these systems. At a time around 1 Gyr after coalescence, the merger-remnants in our sample are X-ray dim when compared to typical …
We present the results of a series of empirical computations regarding the role of major mergers in forming the stellar masses of modern galaxies based on measurements of galaxy merger and star formation histories from z~0.5-3. We re-construct the merger history of normal field galaxies from z~3 to z~0 as a function of initial mass using published pair fractions and merger fractions from structural analyses. We calibrate the observed merger time-scale and mass ratios for galaxy mergers using self-consistent N-body models of mergers, composed of dark matter and stars, with mass ratios from 1:1 …
Galaxies with stellar bulges are generically observed to host supermassive black holes (SMBHs). The hierarchical merging of galaxies should therefore lead to the formation of SMBH binaries. Merging of old massive galaxies with little gas promotes the formation of low-density nuclei where SMBH binaries are expected to survive over long times. If the binary lifetime exceeds the typical time between mergers, then triple black hole (BH) systems may form. We study the statistics of close triple-SMBH encounters in galactic nuclei by computing a series of 3-body orbits with physically-motivated initi…
Collisions and mergers of gas-rich galaxies trigger bursts of star and cluster formation. Of the thousands of clusters typically formed during a major merger, only the most massive and compact survive for Gigayears as globular clusters (GCs). In <~1 Gyr old merger remnants, these `second-generation' GCs appear by the hundreds as young halo clusters of about solar metallicity. Their likely descendants, metal-rich GCs of intermediate age (2 - 5 Gyr), have recently been found in ~10 elliptical galaxies, where they appear as slightly overluminous red GCs with a still power-law-like luminosity func…
Recent spectroscopic observations of galaxies in the Fornax-Cluster reveal nearly unresolved `star-like' objects with red-shifts appropriate to the Fornax-Cluster. These objects have intrinsic sizes of about 100 pc and absolute B-band magnitudes in the range -14 < M_B < -11.5 mag and lower limits for the central surface brightness mu_B >= 23 mag/arcsec^2 (Phillipps et al. 2001, Hilker et al. 1999), and so appear to constitute a new population of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs). Such compact dwarfs were predicted to form from the amalgamation of stellar super-clusters (= clusters of star cl…
We report on a study of tidally triggered star formation in galaxies, based on spectroscopic/photometric observations in the optical/near-IR of a magnitude limited sample of 59 systems of interacting and merging galaxies and a comparison sample of 38 normal isolated galaxies. In contrast to results from previous investigations, our global UBV colours do not support a significant enhancement of starforming activity in the interacting/merging galaxies. We claim that this is true also for Arp galaxies. A moderate increase in star formation is found in the very centres of the interacting galaxies …
We have studied the environmental effect on optical-NIR color gradients of 273 nearby elliptical galaxies. Color gradient is a good tool to study the evolutionary history of elliptical galaxies, since the steepness of the color gradient reflects merging history of early types. When an elliptical galaxy goes through many merging events, the color gradient can be get less steep or reversed due to mixing of stars. One simple way to measure color gradient is to compare half-light radii in different bands. We have compared the optical and near infrared half-light radii of 273 early-type galaxies fr…
We investigate the spatial, kinematic and chemical properties of globular cluster systems formed in merging and interacting galaxies using N-body/SPH simulations. Although we can not resolve individual clusters in our simulation, we assume that they form in collapsing molecular clouds when the local external gas pressure exceeds 10$^5$ $k_B$ (where $k_B$ is the Boltzmann constant). Several simulations are carried out for a range of initial conditions and galaxy mass ratios. The input model spirals are given a halo globular cluster system similar to those observed for the Milky Way and M31. Gra…
We study how the angular resolution of LISA for merging massive black-hole binaries would be improved if we observe multiple gravitational wave ``images'' due to strong gravitational lensing. The correlation between fitting parameters is reduced by the additional information of the second image which significantly reduces the error box on the sky. This improvement would be very helpful for identifying the host galaxy of a binary. The angular resolution expected with multiple detectors is also discussed.
