We present results from N-body + magnetohydrodynamical simulations of merging clusters of galaxies. We find that cluster mergers cause various characteristic magnetic field structures because of the strong bulk flows in the intracluster medium. The moving substructures result in cool regions surrounded by the magnetic field. These will be recognized as magnetized cold fronts in the observational point of view. A relatively ordered magnetic field structure is generated just behind the moving substructure. Eddy-like field configurations are also formed by Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities. These features are similarly seen even in off-center mergers though the detailed structures change slightly. The above-mentioned characteristic magnetic field structures are partly recognized in Faraday rotation measure maps. The higher absolute values of the rotation measure are expected when observed along the collision axis, because of the elongated density distribution and relatively ordered field structure along the axis. The rotation measure maps on the cosmic microwave background radiation, which covers clusters entirely, could be useful probes of not only the magnetic field structures but also the internal dynamics of the intracluster medium.
We present initial results from the first 3-dimensional numerical magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations of magnetic field evolution in merging clusters of galaxies. Within the framework of idealized initial conditions similar to our previous work, we look at the gasdynamics and the magnetic field evolution during a major merger event in order to examine the suggestion that shocks and turbulence generated during a cluster/subcluster merger can produce magnetic field amplification and relativistic particle acceleration and, as such, may play a role in the formation and evolution of cluster-wid…
We present three-dimensional (3-D) magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations of radiatively inefficient accretion flow around black holes. General relativistic effects are simulated by using the pseudo-Newtonian potential. We start calculations with a rotating torus threaded by localized poloidal magnetic fields with plasma beta, a ratio of the gas pressure to the magnetic pressure, $β=10$ and 100. When the bulk of torus material reaches the innermost region close to a central black hole, a magnetically driven jet emerges. This magnetic jet is derived by vertically inflating toroidal fields (`ma…
Shafranov's virial theorem implies that nontrivial magnetohydrodynamical equilibrium configurations must be supported by externally supplied currents. Here we extend the virial theorem to field theory, where it relates to Derrick's scaling argument on soliton stability. We then employ virial arguments to investigate a realistic field theory model of a two-component plasma, and conclude that stable localized solitons can exist in the bulk of a finite density plasma. These solitons entail a nontrivial electric field which implies that purely magnetohydrodynamical arguments are insufficient for d…
We present the analysis of the velocity structure of the intracluster gas near the core of Abell 3526 obtained with two off-center Chandra observations, specifically designed to eliminate errors due to spatial variations of the instrumental gain. We detected a significant velocity gradient along the direction NE-SW direction, roughly perpendicular to the direction of the incoming sub-group Cen45, in agreement with previous ASCA SIS measurements. The presence of gas bulk velocities is observed both with and without the inclusion of the FeK line complex in the spectral fittings. The configuratio…
We present multi-wavelength observations of the brightest galaxies in four X-ray luminous groups at z~0.37 that will merge to form a cluster comparable in mass to Coma. Ordered by increasing stellar mass, the four brightest group galaxies (BGGs) present a time sequence where BGG-1, 2, and 3 are in merging systems and BGG-4 is a massive remnant [M(stars)=6.7x10^(11) Msun]. BGG-1 and 2 have bright, gravitationally bound companions and BGG-3 has two nuclei separated by only 2.5 kpc, thus merging at z<0.5 increases the BGG mass by >40% (merging timescale<2 Gyr) and V-band luminosity by ~0.4 mag. T…
We use morphological measurements and the scatter of clusters about observed and simulated scaling relations to examine the impact of merging and core-related phenomena on the structure of galaxy clusters. All relations constructed from emission-weighted mean temperature and intracluster medium mass, X-ray luminosity, isophotal size, or near-IR luminosity show a separation between cool core (CC) and non-cool core (NCC) clusters. We attribute this partially to a temperature bias in CC clusters, and partially to other cool core-related structural changes. We attempt to minimize CC/NCC separation…
We present an observational analysis of numerical simulations of galaxy cluster mergers. We identify several observational signatures of recent merger activity, and quantitatively assess the uncertainty introduced into cluster mass estimates when invoking the commonly held assumptions of hydrostatic equilibrium, virial equilibrium, spherical symmetry and isothermality. We find that mergers result in multiple X-ray peaks, long-lived elongation of the X-ray emission as well as isophotal twisting and centroid shifting to a degree consistent with recent observations. We also find an enlargement of…
Several recent numerical simulations of off-center cluster mergers predict that significant angular momentum with associated velocities of a few x 10^{3} km/s can be imparted to the resulting cluster. Such gas bulk velocities can be detected by the Doppler shift of X-ray spectral lines with ASCA spectrometers. Using two ASCA observations of the Centaurus cluster, we produced a velocity map for the gas in the cluster's central regions. We also detected radial and azimuthal gradients in temperature and metal abundance distributions, which seem to be associated with the infalling sub-group center…
The age distribution, and chemical elemental abundances, of stars in the halo of the Milky Way provide constraints on theories of galaxy formation. As one specific example, the accretion of satellite galaxies similar to the present retinue of dwarf spheroidals (dSphs) would provide an observable metal-poor, intermediate-age population. This paper presents a quantitative assessment of any contribution made by such stars to the stellar halo. The bulk of the stellar populations in the halo show a well-defined turn-off, at B-V ~ 0.4, implying that the vast majority of the stars are old. The fracti…
The polarization sensitivity of the upcoming millimetric observatories will open new possibilities for studying the properties of galaxy clusters and for using them as powerful cosmological probes. For this reason it is necessary to investigate in detail the characteristics of the polarization signals produced by their highly ionized intra-cluster medium (ICM). This work is focussed on the polarization effect induced by the ICM bulk motions, the so-called kpSZ signal, which has an amplitude proportional to the optical depth and to the square of the tangential velocity. In particular we study h…
The structural properties of elliptical galaxies are consistent with their formation in a merging hierarchy. In this picture, the role of gaseous processes and dissipation decreased with increasing mass creating preferentially rotationally flattend disky ellipticals (and S0s) at lower luminosities and boxy, anisotropic ellipticals (often with peculiar kinematics) at higher luminosities. However, gas and dissipation processes must have been important even in the formation of the most luminous ellipticals. They played key roles in determining the phase space structure of Es and possibly ensured …
We have investigated evolution of non-thermal emission from relativistic electrons accelerated at around the shock fronts during merger of clusters of galaxies. We estimate synchrotron radio emission and inverse Compton scattering of cosmic microwave background photons from extreme ultraviolet (EUV) to hard X-ray range. The hard X-ray emission is most luminous in the later stage of merger. Both hard X-ray and radio emissions are luminous only while signatures of merging events are clearly seen in thermal intracluster medium (ICM). On the other hand, EUV radiation is still luminous after the sy…
We examine the necessity of resolving the Jeans mass in hydrodynamical simulations of the hierarchical formation of cosmological structures. We consider a standard two-component fluid and use smoothed particle hydrodynamics to model the baryonic component. It is found that resolution of the Jeans mass is not necessary to extract bulk properties of bound objects that are independent of resolution, provided that the objects have undergone a number of merger events. The degree of merging must be sufficient to populate the objects with substructure of similar total mass. After this criterion is me…
The graph-theoretical S-tree technique developed for the study of the nonlinear N-body systems, is used for the study for the first time of the substructure of a high redshift cluster of galaxies, namely of MS 1054-03, z\simeq 0.8. Nearby galaxy clusters studied via the same S-tree code reveal several clearly distinguished subgroups with significant bulk velocities. Therefore the study of distant clusters can enable to trace the evolution of their dynamics over cosmological time scales. The study of the MS 1054-03 showed a different structure, i.e. no evidence of merging subgroups but only of …
We present results from three-dimensional particle simulations of collisionless shocks with relativistic counter-streaming ion-electron plasmas. Particles are followed over many skin depths downstream of the shock. Open boundaries allow the experiments to be continued for several particle crossing times. The experiments confirm the generation of strong magnetic and electric fields by a Weibel-like kinetic streaming instability, and demonstrate that the electromagnetic fields propagate far downstream of the shock. The magnetic fields are predominantly transversal, and are associated with mergin…
We study the large-scale velocity fields traced by galaxy clusters in numerical simulations of a box of side 960 $h^{-1}$ Mpc, and compare them with available data on real clusters. In order to test the reliability of the simulations, which are based on an optimized version of the Zel'dovich approximation, we compare their cluster velocities with those of "exact" N-body simulations, and find a remarkable agreement between the two according to a variety of statistical tests. We analyse Cold Dark Matter models with density parameter in the range $0.2\le Ω_0\le 1$, both with and without the cosmo…
We present an analysis of a Chandra observation of the massive, nearby galaxy cluster Abell 2319. A sharp surface brightness discontinuity--suggested by previous, lower angular resolution X-ray imaging--is clearly visible in the ACIS image. This roughly 300kpc feature suggests that a major merger is taking place with a significant velocity component perpendicular to the line of sight. The cluster emission-weighted mean temperature is 11.8+/-0.6kev, somewhat higher than previous temperature measurements. The Chandra temperature map of A2319 reveals substructure resembling that anticipated based…
In this paper, we examine the role that the colour-magnitude relation (CMR) can play in constraining the formation history of rich cluster galaxies. Firstly, we consider the colour evolution of galaxies after star formation ceases. We show that the scatter of the CMR places a strong constraint on the spread in age of the bulk of the stellar population. However, although the bulk of stars must be formed in a short period, continuing formation of stars in a fraction of the galaxies is not so strongly constrained. We examine a model in which star formation occurs over an extended period of time i…
High-resolution Chandra images of several clusters of galaxies reveal sharp, edge-like discontinuities in their gas density. The gas temperature is higher in front of the edge where the density is low, corresponding to approximately continuous pressure across the edge. This new phenomenon was called ``cold fronts'', to contrast it to shock fronts that should look similar in X-ray images but where the temperature should jump in the opposite direction. The first cold fronts were discovered in merging clusters, where they appear to delineate the boundaries of dense cool subcluster remnants moving…
It is now generally believed that galaxies were built up through gravitational amplification of primordial fluctuations and the subsequent merging of smaller precursor structures. The stars of the structures that assembled to form the Milky Way should now make up much or all of its bulge and halo, in which case one hopes to find "fossil" evidence for those precursor structures in the present distribution of halo stars. Confirmation that this process is continuing came with the discovery of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy, which is being disrupted by the Milky Way, but direct evidence that this pr…
Using the IRAM 30m telescope, we report the detection of the CO(3--2), CO(4--3), CO(5--4) and CO(6--5) lines in the gravitational lensed submm galaxy SMM J16359+6612 at z=2.5. The CO lines have a double peak profile in all transitions. From a Gaussian decomposition of the spectra we show that the CO line ratios, and therefore the underlying physical conditions of the gas, are similar for the blue and the redshifted component. The CO line Spectral Energy Distribution (SED; i.e. flux density vs. rotational quantum number) turns over already at the CO(5--4) transition which shows that the molecul…
Chandra has significantly advanced our knowledge of the processes in the intracluster gas. The discovery of remarkably regular ``cold fronts'', or contact discontinuities, in merging clusters showed that gas dynamic instabilities at the boundaries between the moving gases are often suppressed, most likely by specially structured magnetic fields. Cold fronts are not limited to mergers -- Chandra observed them in the cores of more than 2/3 of the cooling flow clusters, where they often divide the cool central and the hotter ambient gas phases. The natural state of the low-entropy central gas in …
N-body + hydrodynamical simulations of the formation and evolution of galaxy groups and clusters in a LambdaCDM cosmology are used in order to follow the building-up of the colour-magnitude relation in two clusters and in 12 groups. We have found that galaxies, starting from the more massive, move to the Red Sequence (RS) as they get aged over times and eventually set upon a ``dead sequence'' (DS) once they have stopped their bulk star formation activity. Fainter galaxies keep having significant star formation out to very recent epochs and lie broader around the RS. Environment plays a role as…
