Trigonometric parallax astrometry and BVI photometry are presented for two late-type subdwarf candidates, LSR1425+71 (sdM8.0) and LSR1610-00 (sd?M6pec). For the former we measure an absolute parallax of 13.37+/-0.51 mas yielding Mv=15.25+/-0.09. The astrometry for LSR1610-00 shows that this object is an astrometric binary with a period of 1.66+/-0.01 yr. The photocentric orbit is derived from the data; it has a moderate eccentricity (e ~ 0.44+/-0.02) and a semi-major axis of 0.28+/-0.01 AU based on our measured absolute parallax of 31.02+/-0.26 mas. Our radial velocity measure of -108.1+/-1.6 km/s for LSR1610-00 at epoch 2006.179, when coupled with the observation of -95+/-1 km/s at epoch 2005.167 by Reiners & Basri, indicates a systemic radial velocity of -101+/-1 km/s for the LSR1610-00AB pair. The galactic velocity components for LSR1425+71 and LSR1610-00AB -- (U,V,W)=(84+/-6, -202+/-13, 66+/-14) km/s and (U,V,W)=(36+/-2, -232+/-2, -61+/-2) km/s, respectively. For both stars, the velocities are characteristic of halo population kinematics. However, modeling shows that both stars have orbits around the galaxy with high eccentricity that pass remarkably close to the galactic center. LSR1425+71 has a luminosity and colors consistent with its metal-poor subdwarf spectral classification, while LSR1610-00 has a luminosity and most colors indicative of being only mildly metal-poor, plus a uniquely red B-V color. The companion to LSR1610-00 must be a low-mass, substellar brown dwarf. We speculate on the paradoxical nature of LSR1610-00 and possible sources of its peculiarities.
We measured absolute trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions with respect to many background galaxies for a sample of ten ultracool subdwarfs. The observations were taken in the H-band with the OMEGA2000 camera at the 3.5m-telescope on Calar Alto, Spain during a time period of 3.5 years. For the first time, the reduction of the astrometric measurements was carried out directly with respect to background galaxies. We obtained absolute parallaxes with mean errors ranging between 1 and 3 mas. With six completely new parallaxes we more than doubled the number of benchmark ultracool (>sdM7) sub…
We discuss the impact of Population II and Globular Cluster (GCs) stars on the derivation of the age of the Universe, and on the study of the formation and early evolution of galaxies, our own in particular. The long-standing problem of the actual distance scale to Population II stars and GCs is addressed, and a variety of different methods commonly used to derive distances to Population II stars are briefly reviewed. Emphasis is given to the discussion of distances and ages for GCs derived using Hipparcos parallaxes of local subdwarfs. Results obtained by different authors are slightly differ…
High precision trigonometric parallaxes from the HIPPARCOS satellite and accurate metal abundances ([Fe/H], [O/Fe], and [alpha/Fe]) from high resolution spectroscopy for about 30 local subdwarfs have been used to derive distances and ages for a carefully selected sample of nine globular clusters. We find that HIPPARCOS parallaxes are smaller than the corresponding ground-based measurements leading, to a longer distance scale (~ 0.2 mag) and to ages ~ 2.8 Gyr younger. The relation between the zero age horizontal branch (ZAHB) absolute magnitude and metallicity for the nine programme clusters is…
The status of 38 halo white dwarf candidates identified by Oppenheimer et al. (2001) has been intensively discussed by various authors. In analyses undertaken to date, trigonometric parallaxes are crucial missing data. Distance measurements are mandatory to kinematically segregate halo object from disk objects and hence enable a more reliable estimate of the local density of halo dark matter residing in such objects. We present trigonometric parallax measurements for 15 candidate halo white dwarfs (WDs) selected from the Oppenheimer et al. (2001) list. We observed the stars using the ESO 1.56-…
We report here initial but still strongly conclusive results on absolute ages of galactic globular clusters (GGCs). This study is based on high precision trigonometric parallaxes from the HIPPARCOS satellite coupled with accurate metal abundances ([Fe/H], [O/Fe], and [α/Fe]) from high resolution spectroscopy for a sample of about thirty subdwarfs. Systematic effects due to star selection (Lutz-Kelker corrections to parallaxes) and to the possible presence of undetected binaries in the sample of bona fide single stars are examined, and appropriate corrections are estimated. They are found to be…
The theoretical prediction that trigonometric parallaxes suffer from a statistical effect, has become topical again now that the results of the Hipparcos satellite have become available. This statistical effect, the so-called Lutz-Kelker bias, causes measured parallaxes to be too large. This has the implication that inferred distances, and hence inferred luminosities are too small. Published analytic calculations of the Lutz-Kelker bias indicate that the inferred luminosity of an object is, on average, 30% too small when the error in the parallax is only 17.5%. Yet, this bias has never been de…
A sample of subdwarfs with accurate space velocities and standarized metallicities is presented. This was constructed by combining Hipparcos parallaxes ond proper motions with radial velocities and metallicities from Carney et al. (1994; CLLA). The accurate Hipparcos parallaxes lead to an - upward - correction factor of 11% of the photometric distance scale of CLLA. The kinematical behaviour of the subdwarfs is discussed in particular in relation to their metallicities. Most of the stars turn out to be thick disk stars, but the sample contains also many genuine halo stars. While the extreme me…
Trigonometric parallaxes of 16 nearby planetary nebulae are presented, including reduced errors for seven objects with previous initial results and results for six new objects. The median error in the parallax is 0.42 mas, and twelve nebulae have parallax errors less than 20 percent. The parallax for PHL932 is found here to be smaller than was measured by Hipparcos, and this peculiar object is discussed. Comparisons are made with other distance estimates. The distances determined from these parallaxes tend to be intermediate between some short distance estimates and other long estimates; they …
We report trigonometric parallaxes for the high-mass star forming regions G35.20-0.74 and G35.20-1.74, corresponding to distances of 2.19 (+0.24 -0.20) kpc and 3.27 (+0.56 -0.42) kpc, respectively. The distances to both sources are close to their near kinematic distances and place them in the Carina-Sagittarius spiral arm. Combining the distances and proper motions with observed radial velocities gives the locations and full space motions of the star forming regions. Assuming a standard model of the Galaxy, G35.20-0.74 and G35.20-1.74 have peculiar motions of ~13 km/s and ~16 km/s counter to G…
We report trigonometric parallaxes for the sources NGC 7538 and Cep A, corresponding to distances of 2.65 [+0.12/-0.11] kpc and 0.70 [+0.04/-0.04] kpc, respectively. The distance to NGC 7538 is considerably smaller than its kinematic distance and places it in the Perseus spiral arm. The distance to Cep A is also smaller than its kinematic distance and places it in the Local arm or spur. Combining the distance and proper motions with observed radial velocities gives the location and full space motion of the star forming regions. We find significant deviations from circular Galactic orbits for t…
We are conducting a large program with the NRAO Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) to measure trigonometric parallaxes of massive star-forming regions across the Milky Way. Here we report measurement of the parallax and proper motion of methanol masers in S 252 and G232.6+1.0. The parallax of S 252 is 0.476 +/- 0.006 mas (2.10 [+0.027/-0.026] kpc), placing it in the Perseus spiral arm. The parallax of G232.6+1.0 is 0.596 +/- 0.035 mas (1.68 [+0.11/-0.09] kpc), placing it between the Carina-Sagittarius and Perseus arms, possibly in a Local (Orion) spur of the Carina-Sagittarius arm. For both sourc…
We have used main-sequence fitting to calibrate the distances to the globular clusters NGC 6397, M5, NGC 288, M71 and 47 Tucanae, matching the cluster photometry against data for subdwarfs with precise Hipparcos parallax measurements and accurate abundance determinations. Both the cluster and subdwarf abundance scales are tied to high-resolution spectroscopic analyses. The distance moduli that we derive for the five clusters are 12.24, 14.52, 15.00, 13.19 and 13.59 magnitudes, with uncertainties of +/- 0.15 magnitudes. As in previous analyses by Reid (1997) and Gratton et al (1997), those dist…
We first review the current knowledge of Hipparcos systematic and random errors, in particular small-scale correlations. Then, assuming Gaussian parallax errors and using examples from the recent Hipparcos literature, we show how random errors may be misinterpreted as systematic errors, or transformed into systematic errors. Finally we summarise how to get unbiased estimates of absolute magnitudes and distances, using either Bayesian or non-parametrical methods. These methods may be applied to get either mean quantities or individual estimates. In particular, we underline the notion of astrome…
We report trigonometric parallaxes for G59.7+0.1 and W 51 IRS2, corresponding to distances of 2.16^{+0.10}_{-0.09} kpc and 5.1^{+2.9}_{-1.4} kpc, respectively. The distance to G59.7+0.1 is smaller than its near kinematic distance and places it between the Carina-Sagittarius and Perseus spiral arms, probably in the Local (Orion) spur. The distance to W 51 IRS2, while subject to significant uncertainty, is close to its kinematic distance and places it near the tangent point of the Carina-Sagittarius arm. It also agrees well with a recent estimate based on O-type star spectro/photometry. Combinin…
We report trigonometric parallaxes for the massive star-forming regions G23.01-0.41 and G23.44-0.18, corresponding to distances of 4.59 [+0.38/-0.33] kpc and 5.88 [+1.37/-0.93] kpc, respectively. The distance to G23.01-0.41 is smaller than its near kinematic distance assuming a standard model of the Milky Way and less than half of its far kinematic distance, which has usually been assumed. This places it in the Crux-Scutum spiral arm. The distance to G23.44-0.18 is close to its near kinematic distance and most likely places it in the Norma spiral arm near the end of the Galactic bar. Combining…
Please note that this abstract has been shortened from that found in the paper. A brief history is given of the development of the correction for observation selection bias inherent in the calibration of absolute magnitudes using trigonometric parallaxes. As a tutorial to gain an intuitive understanding of several complicated trigonometric bias problems, we study a toy bias model of a parallax catalog which incorporates assumed parallax measuring errors of various severities. The two effects of bias errors on the derived absolute magnitudes are (1) the Lutz-Kelker correction itself that depend…
We have used new parallax measurements, obtained by the Hipparcos satellite, of fifteen nearby, metal-poor stars to re-define the subdwarf main-sequence. All of these stars have parallaxes determined to an accuracy of at least 12 %. Comparing these measurements against previous ground-based data for nine stars reveals a systematic offset of 5 %, in the sense that the Hipparcos parallaxes are smaller (i.e. the inferred distances are larger). The availability of the Hipparcos observations expands the local subdwarf sample to the extent that we can separate the stars by abundance into intermediat…
We give preliminary results from a spectroscopic study of composite spectrum hot subdwarfs (sd+late-type). We obtained spectra of a sample of hot subdwarfs selected from the "Catalogue of Spectroscopically Identified Hot Subdwarfs" on the basis of near-infrared photometry from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS). The sample consists of 20 photometric and spectroscopic single and 54 composite hot subdwarfs, 6 resolved (or barely resolved) visual doubles, and 5 objects with emission lines or broad absorption lines with emission cores. Spectra of 84 "standard" (single late-type) stars with Hipp…
Using new spectra of 88 K and M-type subdwarfs, we consider novel methods for assigning their spectral types and take steps toward developing a comprehensive spectral sequence for subdwarf types K3.0 to M6.0. The types are assigned based on the overall morphology of spectra covering 6000Åto 9000Å. The types and sequence presented link the spectral types of cool subdwarfs to their main sequence counterparts, with emphasis on the relatively opacity-free region from 8200--9000Å. When available, supporting abundance, kinematic, and trigonometric parallax information is used to provide more complet…
We present the results of a study of the late-type companions in hot subdwarf composite spectrum binaries. The exact nature of these late-type companions has been disputed in the literature -- some argue that they are main sequence stars, and others have claimed they are subgiants. To determine the properties of the late-type companions, we first conducted a survey utilizing the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) All-Sky Data Release Catalog to identify composite-colored binaries in the "Catalogue of Spectroscopically Identified Hot Subdwarfs" (Kilkenny, Heber, & Drilling 1988, 1992). We then c…
We present the first set of definitive trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions from the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory Parallax Investigation (CTIOPI). Full astrometric reductions for the program are discussed, including methods of reference stars selection, differential color refraction corrections, and conversion of relative to absolute parallax. Using data acquired at the 0.9-m at CTIO, full astrometric solutions and $VRIJHK_s$ photometry are presented for 36 red and white dwarf stellar systems with proper motions faster than 1\farcs0/yr. Of these, thirty three systems have the…
Astrometric measurements for 25 red dwarf systems are presented, including the first definitive trigonometric parallaxes for 20 systems within 10 pc of the Sun, the horizon of the RECONS sample. The three nearest systems that had no previous trigonometric parallaxes (other than perhaps rough preliminary efforts) are SO 0253+1652 (3.84 +/- 0.04 pc, the 23rd nearest system), SCR 1845-6357 AB (3.85 +/- 0.02 pc, 24th), and LHS 1723 (5.32 +/- 0.04 pc, 56th). In total, seven of the systems reported here rank among the nearest 100 stellar systems. Supporting photometric and spectroscopic observations…
I used the 2.4 m Hiltner telescope at MDM Observatory in an attempt to measure trigonometric parallaxes for 14 cataclysmic variable stars. Techniques are described in detail. In the best cases the parallax uncertainties are below 1 mas, and significant parallaxes are found for most of the program stars. A Bayesian method which combines the parallaxes together with proper motions and absolute magnitude constraints is developed and used to derive distance estimates and confidence intervals. The most precise distance derived here is for WZ Sge, for which I find 43.3 (+1.6, -1.5) pc. Six Luyten Ha…
Trigonometric parallaxes have been measured by Dahn et al. (2002) for 28 cool dwarfs and brown dwarfs, including 17 L dwarfs and three T dwarfs. Broadband CCD and near-IR photometry (VRIz*JHK) have been obtained for these objects and for 24 additional late-type dwarfs. These data have been supplemented with astrometry and photometry from the literature, including parallaxes for the brighter companions of ten L and two T dwarfs. The absolute magnitudes and colors are reviewed here. The I-J color and the spectral type are both good predictors of absolute magnitude for late-M and L dwarfs. M_J be…
We present multi-color transformations and photometric parallaxes for a sample of 40 low mass dwarfs selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the General Catalog of Trigonometric Stellar Parallaxes. Our sample was re-observed at the Manastash Ridge Observatory (MRO) using both Sloan and Johnson-Cousin filters and color transformations between the two photometric systems were derived. A subset of the sample had previously measured Johnson-Cousins photometry and parallaxes as well as 2MASS photometry. We observed these stars at MRO using Sloan filters and used these data to derive p…
Hipparcos proper motions and trigonometric parallaxes allow the derivation of secular parallaxes which fix the distances to individual stars in the Hyades cluster to an accuracy of \sim 2 percent. The resulting color-absolute magnitude diagram for 92 high-fidelity single members of the cluster displays a very narrow main sequence, with two turn-offs and associated gaps. These occur at the locations where the onset of surface convection affects the B-V colors, as predicted by Boehm-Vitense thirty years ago. The new distances provide stringent constraints on the transformations of colors and abs…
We present absolute trigonometric parallaxes and relative proper motions for three members of the Pleiades star cluster, obtained with HST's Fine Guidance Sensor 1r, a white-light interferometer. We estimate spectral types and luminosity classes of the stars comprising the astrometric reference frame from R \approx 2,000 spectra, VJHK photometry, and reduced proper motions. From these we derive estimates of absolute parallaxes and introduce them into our model as observations with error. We constrain the three cluster members to have a 1 sigma dispersion in distance less than 6.4 pc, and find …
Abundances for alpha-elements and Fe in about 150 field subdwarfs and early subgiants with accurate parallaxes and kinematic data are used to discuss the run of abundance ratios in metal-poor stars in the solar neighborhood. Based on kinematics, we separated stars into two populations: the first one has a positive velocity of rotation around the galactic center, and it is likely to be related to the dissipational collapse of the galaxy; the second one has either negligible or negative rotational velocity, and it is likely related to an accretion component. The two populations show a large over…
We present medium resolution spectroscopy and multi-epoch VRI photometry for 21 new nearby (< 50 pc) white dwarf systems brighter than V ~ 17. Of the new systems, ten are DA (including a wide double degenerate system with two DA components), eight are DC, two are DZ, and one is DB. In addition, we include multi-epoch VRI photometry for eleven known white dwarf systems that do not have trigonometric parallax determinations. Using model atmospheres relevant for various types of white dwarfs (depending on spectral signatures), we perform spectral energy distribution modeling by combining the opti…
We present preliminary trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions for 22 L dwarfs and 18 T dwarfs measured using the ASTROCAM infrared imager. Relative to absolute parallax corrections are made by employing 2MASS and/or SDSS photometry for reference frame stars. We combine USNO infrared and optical parallaxes with the best available CIT system photometry to determine M_J, M_H, and M_K values for 37 L dwarfs between spectral types L0 to L8 and 19 T dwarfs between spectral types T0.5 and T8 and present selected absolute magnitude versus spectral type and color diagrams, based on these results. …
Preliminary trigonometric parallaxes and BVI photometry are presented for two dwarf carbon stars, LP765-18 (= LHS1075) and LP328-57 (= CLS96). The data are combined with the literature values for a third dwarf carbon star, G77-61 (= LHS1555). All three stars have very similar luminosities (9.6<M_V<10.0) and very similar broadband colors across the entire visual-to-near IR (BVIJHK) wavelength range. Their visual (BVI) colors differ from all known red dwarfs, subdwarfs, and white dwarfs. In the M_V versus V-I color-magnitude diagram they are approximately 2 magnitudes subluminous compared with n…
We present deep CCD photometry of the globular cluster M13 (NGC 6205) in the Stromgren uvby-Beta system, and determine a foreground reddening of E(b-y)= 0.015mag. From a fit to the main-sequence of metal-poor subdwarfs with Hipparcos parallaxes, we derive (m-M)_0=14.38 +- 0.10 which implies an age near 12 Gyr assuming [Fe/H]=-1.61 and [Alpha/Fe]=0.3. The distance independent ((b-y)_0, c_0) diagram indicates that M13 and metal-poor field subdwarfs of similar metallicity must be coeval to within +-1 Gyr. In addition, we find that, at any given (b-y)_0 color, there is a large spread in the c_0 in…
Ages, chemical compositions, velocity vectors, and Galactic orbits for stars in the solar neighbourhood are fundamental test data for models of Galactic evolution. We aim to improve the accuracy of the Geneva-Copenhagen Survey data by implementing the recent revision of the Hipparcos parallaxes. The new parallaxes yield improved astrometric distances for 12,506 stars in the GCS. We also check the GCS II scales of T_eff and [Fe/H] and find no need for change. Introducing the new distances, we recompute M_V for 16,086 stars, and U, V, W, and Galactic orbital parameters for the 13,520 stars that …
The study of detached eclipsing binaries is one of the most powerful ways to investigate the properties of individual stars and stellar systems. We present preliminary masses, radii and effective temperatures for the eclipsing binary WW Aurigae, which is composed of two metallic-lined A-type stars. We also reanalyse the data on HD 23642, an A-type eclipsing binary member of the Pleiades open cluster with a metallic-lined component, and determine its distance to be 139 +/- 4 pc. This is in agreement with the traditional Pleiades distance, but in disagreement with distance to the Pleiades, and t…
