Major changes made: 1) Taking into account properly the contribution of the resistance of monopolar junctions to the odd part of the resistance. To better present the results we use a fitting parameter for the amplitude of screening in graphene. 2) Wrong data for the diffusive model in figures 3, 9 and 10 was plotted in former version. 3) Figure 5 moved to EPAPS
Transport through potential barriers in graphene is investigated using a set of metallic gates capacitively coupled to graphene to modulate the potential landscape. When a gate-induced potential step is steep enough, disorder becomes less important and the resistance across the step is in quantitative agreement with predictions of Klein tunneling of Dirac fermions up to a small correction. We also perform magnetoresistance measurements at low magnetic fields and compare them to recent predictions.
The tunneling of electrons and holes in quantum structures plays a crucial role in studying the transport properties of materials and the related devices. 8-Pmmn borophene is a new two-dimensional Dirac material, which hosts tilted Dirac cone and chiral, anisotropic massless Dirac fermions. We develop the transfer matrix method to investigate the Klein tunneling of massless fermions across the smooth NP junctions and NPN junctions of 8-Pmmn borophene. Like the sharp NP junctions of 8-Pmmn borophene, the tilted Dirac cones induce the oblique Klein tunneling. The angle of perfect transmission to…
We show that in gapped bilayer graphene, quasiparticle tunneling and the corresponding Berry phase can be controlled such that it exhibits features of single layer graphene such as Klein tunneling. The Berry phase is detected by a high-quality Fabry-Pérot interferometer based on bilayer graphene. By raising the Fermi energy of the charge carriers, we find that the Berry phase can be continuously tuned from $2π$ down to $0.68π$ in gapped bilayer graphene, in contrast to the constant Berry phase of $2π$ in pristine bilayer graphene. Particularly, we observe a Berry phase of $π$, the standard val…
Klein tunneling is a counterintuitive quantum-mechanical phenomenon, predicting perfect transmission of relativistic particles through higher energy barriers. This phenomenon was shown to be supported at normal incidence in graphene due to pseudospin conservation. Here I show that Klein tunneling analogue can occur in classical systems, and remarkably, not relying on mimicking graphene's spinor wavefunction structure. Instead, the mechanism requires a particular form of constitutive parameters of the penetrated medium, yielding transmission properties identical to the quantum tunneling in grap…
We study the total transmission of quantum particles satisfying the Klein-Gordon equation through a potential barrier based on the classical wave propagation theory. We deduce an analytical expression for the wave impedance for Klein-Gordon particles. From the condition that the impedance is matched throughout the space, we show that super-Klein tunneling, which refers to the omnidirectional total transmission of particles through a potential barrier when the energy of the particle is equal to the half of the barrier potential, should occur in these systems. We also derive a condition for tota…
We study by first-principles calculations a densely packed island of organic molecules (F4TCNQ) adsorbed on graphene. We find that with electron doping the island naturally forms a p-n junction in the graphene sheet. For example, a doping level of ~ 3 * 10^{13} electrons per cm^2 results in a p-n junction with 800 meV electrostatic potential barrier. Unlike in a conventional p-n junction in graphene, in the case of the junction formed by an adsorbed organic molecular island we expect that the Klein tunneling is inhibited, even without an applied external magnetic field. Here Klein tunneling is…
The 8-\textit{Pmmn} borophene is one kind of new elemental monolayer, which hosts anisotropic and tilted massless Dirac fermions (MDF). The planar \textit{p-n} junction (PNJ) structure as the basic component of various novel devices based on the monolayer material has attracted increasing attention. Here, we analytically study the transport properties of anisotropic and tilted MDF across 8-\textit{Pmmn} borophene PNJ. Similar to the isotropic MDF across graphene junctions, perfect transmission exists but its direction departures the normal direction of borophene PNJ induced by the anisotropy a…
We study the dynamics of semiclassical electrons in (gapped) graphene in two complementary limits, i.e. in the Klein tunneling and valley Hall effect regimes, by scattering wave packets off armchair step potentials and by exposing wave packets to a uniform electric field, respectively. Our numerical wave packet simulation goes beyond semiclassical analytical approximations and standard Klein tunneling treatments and allows to study intra- and intervalley scattering processes. We find distinct Klein tunneling characteristics for low and tall steps, which include unusual Berry curvature induced …
We numerically investigate the effect of Klein tunneling on the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in graphene rings using a tight-binding model with nearest-neighbor couplings. In order to introduce Klein tunneling into the system, we apply an electrostatic potential to one of the arms of the ring, such that this arm together with the two adjacent leads form either a $nn'n$- or $npn$-junction ($n,n'$: conduction band transport, $p$: valence band transport). The former case corresponds to normal tunneling and the latter case to Klein tunneling. We find that the transmission properties strongly depend …
Klein tunneling, the perfect transmission of normally incident Dirac electrons across a potential barrier, has been widely studied in graphene and explored to design switches, albeit indirectly. We show that Klein tunneling maybe easier to detect for spin-momentum locked electrons crossing a PN junction along a three-dimensional topological insulator surface. In these topological insulator PN junctions (TIPNJs), the spin texture and momentum distribution of transmitted electrons can be measured electrically using a ferromagnetic probe for varying gate voltages and angles of current injection. …
One of the unique features of graphene is that the Fermi wavelength of its charge carriers can be tuned electrostatically over a wide range. This allows in principle to tune the transparency of a pn-junction electrostatically, as this depends on the ratio between the physical extension of the junction and the electron wavelength, i.e. on the effective width of the junction itself. However, this simple idea - which would allow to switch smoothly between a Veselago lens and a Klein-collimator - has proved to be difficult to demonstrate experimentally because of the limited amount of independentl…
The conductance and the Fano factor in a graphene sheet in the ballistic regime are calculated. The electrostatic potential in the sheet is modeled by a trapezoid barrier, which allows to use the exact solution of the Dirac equation in a uniform electric field in the slope areas (the two lateral sides of the trapezoid). A special attention is devoted to asymmetry with respect to the sign of the gate voltage, which is connected with the difference between the Klein tunneling and the over-barrier reflection. The comparison of the developed theory with the experiment supports the conclusion that …
The two apparently disparate phenomena, viz. the Klein tunneling and the electric field driven topological phase transition(TPT), exhibited by the silicene converge on the issue of the no change in the pseudo-spin. An ensuing possibility is that the former, in the case of a normal/magnetic/normal silicene junction, may be considered theoretically as a probe to ascertain the onset of the latter. In this communication, we explore this option and calculate the total transmission probability(TTP). We find that TPT is characterized by a cusp in a plot of TTP as a function of the electric field.
We study pentanedithiol molecular junctions formed by means of the break-junction technique with a scanning tunneling microscope at low temperatures. Using inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, the response of the junction to elastic deformation is examined. We show that this procedure makes a detailed characterization of the molecular junction possible. In particular, our results indicate that tunneling takes place through just a single molecule.
Currently, much effort is being put into detecting unconventional p-wave superconductivity in Josephson junctions based on topological insulators (TIs). For that purpose we propose to use superconducting Klein tunneling, i.e. the reflectionless passage of Cooper pairs through a potential barrier in a gated ballistic junction. This phenomenon occurs due to the fact that the supercurrent is carried by helical Andreev bound states (ABSs) characterized by spin-momentum locking similar to the normal-state carriers. We derive the spectrum of the helical ABSs and the corresponding Josephson current f…

Tunnelling of electrons in graphene-based junctions is studied theoretically. Graphene is assumed to be deposited either directly on a ferromagnetic insulator or on a few atomic layers of boron nitride which separate graphene from a metallic ferromagnetic substrate. Such junctions can be formed by appropriate external gating of the corresponding system. To describe low-energy electronic states near the Dirac points, certain effective Hamiltonians available in the relevant literature are used. These Hamiltonians include staggered potential and exchange interaction due to ferromagnetic substrate…
We investigate the role of pseudospin structure of few-layer black phosphorus (BP) in interband tunneling properties in lateral BP junctions. We find that interband tunneling is critically dependent on junction directions because of the anisotropic pseudospin structure of BP. When the armchair direction of BP is normal to the interface, pseudospins of incident and transmitted carriers are nearly aligned so that interband tunneling is highly effective, analogous to the Klein tunneling in graphene. However, when the zigzag direction is normal to the interface, interband tunneling is suppressed b…
We show that the S/F/S Josephson $φ_0$-junction permits detection of macroscopic quantum tunneling and quantum oscillation of the magnetic moment by measuring the ac voltage across the junction. Exact expression for the tunnel splitting renormalized by the interaction with the superconducting order parameter is obtained. It is demonstrated that magnetic tunneling may become frozen at a sufficiently large $φ_0$. The quality factor of quantum oscillations of the magnetic moment due to finite Ohmic resistance of the junction is computed. It is shown that magnetic tunneling rate in the $φ_0$-junct…
We theoretically investigate the spin--wave spin current induced by the spin Seebeck effect in magnonic spin tunneling junctions (MSTJs) for arbitrary magnetization directions. We show that the MSTJ functions as a \textit{tunable} spin Seebeck diode in which the tunneling spin current can be turned on and off with high efficiency by controlling the magnetization direction.
We employ the tight-binding propagation method to study Klein tunneling and quantum interference in large graphene systems. With this efficient numerical scheme, we model the propagation of a wave packet through a potential barrier and determine the tunneling probability for different incidence angles. We consider both sharp and smooth potential barriers in n-p-n and n-n' junctions and find good agreement with analytical and semiclassical predictions. When we go outside the Dirac regime, we observe that sharp n-p junctions no longer show Klein tunneling because of intervalley scattering. Howev…
A multi-level Anderson model is employed to simulate the system of a nanostructure tunnel junction with any number of one-particle energy levels. The tunneling current, including both shell-tunneling and shell-filling cases, is theoretically investigated via the nonequilibrium Green's function method. We obtain a closed form for the spectral function, which is used to analyze the complicated tunneling current spectra of a quantum dot or molecule embedded in a double-barrier junction. We also show that negative differential conductance can be observed in a quantum dot tunnel junction when the C…
Graphene electrons feature a pair of massless Dirac cones of opposite pseudospin chirality at two valleys. Klein tunneling refers to the intriguing capability of these chiral electrons to penetrate through high and wide potential barrier. The two valleys have been treated independently in the literature, where time reversal symmetry dictates that neither the normal incidence transmission nor the angle-averaged one can have any valley polarization. Here we show that, when intervalley scattering by barrier is accounted, graphene electrons normally incident at a superlattice barrier can experienc…
Charge carriers in single and multilayered graphene systems behave as chiral particles due to the particular lattice symmetry of the crystal. We show that the interplay between the meta-material properties of graphene multilayers and the pseudospinorial properties of the charge carriers result in the occurrence of Klein and anti-Klein tunneling for rhombohedral stacked multilayers. We derive an algebraic formula predicting the angles at which these phenomena occur and support this with numerical calculations for systems up to four layers. We present a decomposition of an arbitrarily stacked mu…
Today the availability of high mobility graphene up to room temperature makes ballistic transport in nanodevices achievable. In particular, p-n-p transistor in the ballistic regime gives access to the Klein tunneling physics and allows the realization of devices exploiting the optics-like behavior of Dirac Fermions (DF) as in the Vesalego lens or the Fabry Pérot cavity. Here we propose a Klein tunneling transistor based on geometrical optics of DF. We consider the case of a prismatic active region delimited by a triangular gate, where total internal reflection may occur, which leads to the tun…
Simulating quantum transport through mesoscopic, ring-shaped graphene structures, we address various quantum coherence and interference phenomena. First, a perpendicular magnetic field, penetrating the graphene ring, gives rise to Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the conductance as a function of the magnetic flux, on top of the universal conductance fluctuations. At very high fluxes the interference gets suppressed and quantum Hall edge channels develop. Second, applying an electrostatic potential to one of the ring arms, $nn'n$- or $npn$-junctions can be realized with particle transmission due t…
We present electronic transport measurements through thiolated C$_{60}$ molecules in liquid environment. The molecules were placed within a mechanically controllable break junction using a single anchoring group per molecule. When varying the electrode separation of the C$_{60}$-modified junctions, we observed a peak in the conductance traces. The shape of the curves is strongly influenced by the environment of the junction as shown by measurements in two distinct solvents. In the framework of a simple resonant tunneling model, we can extract the electronic tunneling rates governing the transp…
Because of its large Fermi velocity, leading to a great mobility, graphene is expected to play an important role in (small signal) radio frequency electronics. Among other, graphene devices based on Klein tunneling phenomena are already envisioned. The connection between the Klein tunneling times of electrons and cut-off frequencies of graphene devices is not obvious. We argue in this paper that the trajectory-based Bohmian approach gives a very natural framework to quantify Klein tunneling times in linear band graphene devices because of its ability to distinguish, not only between transmitte…
This is a colloquium-style introduction to two electronic processes in a carbon monolayer (graphene), each having an analogue in relativistic quantum mechanics. Both processes couple electron-like and hole-like states, through the action of either a superconducting pair potential or an electrostatic potential. The first process, Andreev reflection, is the electron-to-hole conversion at the interface with a superconductor. The second process, Klein tunneling, is the tunneling through a p-n junction. Existing and proposed experiments on Josephson junctions and bipolar junctions in graphene are d…
We report the experimental observation of sub-Poissonian shot noise in single magnetic tunnel junctions, indicating the importance of tunneling via impurity levels inside the tunnel barrier. For junctions with weak zero-bias anomaly in conductance, the Fano factor (normalized shot noise) depends on the magnetic configuration being enhanced for antiparallel alignment of the ferromagnetic electrodes. We propose a model of sequential tunneling through nonmagnetic and paramagnetic impurity levels inside the tunnel barrier to qualitatively explain the observations.
Despite many similarities between electronics and optics, the hopping of the electron on a discrete atomic lattice gives rise to energy band nonparabolicity and anisotropy. The crucial influences of this effect on material properties and its incorporation into the continuum model have received widespread attention in the past half century. Here we predict the existence of a different effect due to the hopping of the electron across an atomically sharp interface. For a general lattice, its influence on transport could be equally important as the energy band nonparabolicity/anisotropy, but canno…
We theoretically investigate the angular and spin dependent transport in normal-metal/helical-multiferroic/ferromagnetic heterojunctions. We find a tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance (TAMR) effect due to the spiral magnetic order in the tunnel junction and to an effective spin-orbit coupling induced by the topology of the localized magnetic moments in the multiferroic spacer. The predicted TAMR effect is efficiently controllable by an external electric field due to the magnetoelectric coupling.
Transport measurement of electron optics in monolayer graphene p-n junction devices has been traditionally studied with negative refraction and chiral transmission experiments in Hallbar magnetic focusing set-ups. We show direct signatures of Klein (monolayer) and anti-Klein (bilayer) tunneling with a circular 'edgeless' Corbino geometry made out of gated graphene p-n junctions. Noticeable in particular is the appearance of angular sweet spots (Brewster angles) in the magnetoconductance data of bilayer graphene, which minimizes head-on transmission, contrary to conventional Fresnel optics or m…
The so-called Klein paradox - unimpeded penetration of relativistic particles through high and wide potential barriers - is one of the most exotic and counterintuitive consequences of quantum electrodynamics (QED). The phenomenon is discussed in many contexts in particle, nuclear and astro- physics but direct tests of the Klein paradox using elementary particles have so far proved impossible. Here we show that the effect can be tested in a conceptually simple condensed-matter experiment by using electrostatic barriers in single- and bi-layer graphene. Due to the chiral nature of their quasipar…
We study the interconversion between photons and phonons coupled via radiation pressure in artificial Dirac materials realized by a honeycomb array of optomechanical cells. In particular we analyze the chiral tunneling of (photon-phonon) polaritons through an oscillating planar barrier. While a static barrier accommodates constructively interfering optical or mechanical waves leading to photon or phonon transmission, an oscillating barrier allows for inelastic scattering that causes sideband excitations and interference effects which, in turn, may suppress or revive the light-sound interconver…
Statistics of electron tunneling in normal tunnel junctions is studied analytically and numerically taking into account circuit (environment) effects. Full counting statistics, as well as full statistics of voltage and phase have been found for arbitrary times of observation. The theoretical analysis was based on the classical master equation, whereas the numerical simulations employed standard Monte-Carlo methods.
Using the coupled-mode theory in guided-wave optics and electronics, we explore a directional coupling structure composed of two parallel waveguides electrostatically induced by the split-gate technique in bulk graphene. Our results show that Klein tunneling can greatly enhance the coupling strength of the structure. By adjusting a gate voltage, the probability density of Dirac electron wave function initially in one waveguide can be completely transferred into the other waveguide within several hundred nanometers. Our findings could not only lead to functional coherent coupling devices for qu…
We have measured the current-voltage characteristics of small-capacitance single Josephson junctions at low temperatures (T < 0.04 K), where the strength of the coupling between the single junction and the electromagnetic environment was controlled with one-dimensional arrays of dc SQUIDs. We have clearly observed Coulomb blockade of Cooper-pair tunneling and even a region of negative differential resistance, when the zero-bias resistance of the SQUID arrays is much higher than the quantum resistance h/e^2 = 26 kohm. The negative differential resistance is evidence of coherent single-Cooper-pa…
We have utilized the finite-difference approach to explore electron-tunneling properties in gapped graphene through various electrostatic-potential barriers changing from Gaussian to a triangular envelope function in comparison with a square potential barrier. Transmission coefficient is calculated numerically for each case and applied to corresponding tunneling conductance. It is well known that Klein tunneling in graphene will be greatly reduced in a gapped graphene. Our results further demonstrate that such a decrease of transmission can be significantly enhanced for spatially-modulated pot…
We calculate the contribution to the spin transfer torque from sequential tunneling through impurities in a magnetic tunnel junction. For a junction with weakly polarized ferromagnetic contacts, the torque is found to be in the plane spanned by the magnetizations of the ferromagnetic contacts and proportional to $\sin θ$, where $θ$ is the angle between the magnetic moments. If the polarization is larger, the torque acquires a significant out-of-plane component and a different dependence on $θ$.
The paper addresses inelastic spin-flip tunneling accompanied by surface spin excitations (magnons) in ferromagnetic junctions. The inelastic tunneling current is proportional to the magnon density of states which is energy-independent for the surface waves and, for this reason, cannot account for the bias-voltage dependence of the observed inelastic tunneling spectra. This paper shows that the bias-voltage dependence of the tunneling spectra can arise from the tunneling matrix elements of the electron-magnon interaction. These matrix elements are derived from the Coulomb exchange interaction …
A fractional quantum Hall liquid with multiple edges is considered. The computation of transport quantities such as current, noise and noise cross correlations in such multiple edge samples requires the implementation of so called Klein factors, which insure the correct quasiparticle exchange properties. The commutation relations of these factors are obtained by closing the system into a single edge. The non-equilibrium Green's function formalism associated with such factors is derived for a simple Laughlin fraction of the Hall effect. It is shown explicitly how Klein factors enter the calcula…
Tunneling hetero-junctions (THJs) usually induce confined states at the regions close to the tunnel junction which significantly affect their transport properties. Accurate numerical modeling of such effects requires combining the non-equilibrium coherent quantum transport through tunnel junction, as well as the quasi-equilibrium statistics arising from the strong scattering in the induced quantum wells. In this work, a novel atomistic model is proposed to include both effects: the strong scattering in the regions around THJ and the coherent tunneling. The new model matches reasonably well wit…
Micrometer-sized Al/AlO$_{x}$/Y tunnel junctions were fabricated by the electron-beam lithography technique. The thin ($\approx$ 1.5--2 nm thickness) insulating AlO$_{x}$ layer was grown on top of the Al base electrode by O$_{2}$ glow discharge. The zero-bias conductances $G(T)$ and the current-voltage characteristics of the junctions were measured in a wide temperature range 1.5--300 K\@. In addition to the direct tunneling conduction mechanism observed in low-$G$ junctions, high-$G$ junctions reveal a distinct charge transport process which manifests the thermally fluctuation-induced tunneli…
The effects of the spin-orbit interaction on the tunneling magnetoresistance of magnetic tunnel junctions are investigated. A model in which the experimentally observed two-fold symmetry of the anisotropic tunneling magnetoresistance (TAMR) originates from the interference between Dresselhaus and Bychkov-Rashba spin-orbit couplings is formulated. Bias induced changes of the Bychkov-Rashba spin-orbit coupling strength can result in an inversion of the TAMR. The theoretical calculations are in good agreement with the TAMR experimentally observed in epitaxial Fe/GaAs/Au tunnel junctions.
The outstanding electronic properties of relativistic-like fermions have been extensively studied in solid state systems with isotropic linear dispersions such as graphene. Here, we show that 2D and 3D Dirac-Weyl (DW) materials exhibiting tilted energy dispersions could induce drastically different transport phenomena, compared to the non-tilted case. Indeed, the Klein tunneling of DW fermions of opposite chiralities is predicted to appear along two separated oblique directions. In addition, valley filtering and beam splitting effects are easily tailored by dopant engineering techniques while …
We theoretically investigate the transport properties of a normal-insulator-superconductor (NIS) junction of silicene in the thin barrier limit. Similar to graphene the tunneling conductance in such NIS structure exhibits an oscillatory behavior as a function of the strength of the barrier in the insulating region. However, unlike in graphene, the tunneling conductance in silicene can be controlled by an external electric field owing to its buckled structure. We also demonstrate the change in behavior of the tunneling conductance across the NIS junction as we change the chemical potential in t…
We study a circuit where a mesoscopic Josephson junction (JJ) is embedded in an environment consisting of a large bias resistor and a normal metal - superconductor tunnel junction (NIS). The effective Coulomb blockade of the JJ can be controlled by the tunneling current through the NIS junction leading to transistor-like characteristics. We show using phase correlation theory and numerical simulations that substantial current gain with low current noise ($i_{n}\lesssim 1$ fA/$\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$) and noise temperature ($\lesssim $ 0.1 K) can be achieved. Good agreement between our numerical simu…
We measured the shot noise in the CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB-based magnetic tunneling junctions with a high tunneling magnetoresistance ratio (over 200% at 3 K). Although the Fano factor in the anti-parallel configuration is close to unity, it is observed to be typically 0.91\pm0.01 in the parallel configuration. It indicates the sub-Poissonian process of the electron tunneling in the parallel configuration due to the relevance of the spin-dependent coherent transport in the low bias regime.
We study the electronic transport in a graphene-based superconductor-normal(graphene)-superconductor (SNS) junction by use of the Dirac-Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. We consider the properties of tunneling conductance through an undoped strip of graphene with heavily doped superconducting electrodes in the dirty limit. We find that spectrum of Andreev bound states are modified in the presence of single localized defect in the bulk. The minimum tunneling conductance remains the same and this result doesn't depend on the actual location of the imperfection.
We propose tunnel junctions of a Hall bar and a superconducting lead, for observing Cooper-pair tunneling into singlet fractional quantum Hall edge states. These tunnel junctions provide a natural means of extracting precise information of the spin polarization and the filling factor of the state. The low energy regime of one of the set-ups is governed by a novel quantum entangled fixed point.
We demonstrate that a suspended nanowire forming a weak link between two superconductors can be cooled to its motional ground state by a supercurrent flow. The predicted cooling mechanism has its origins in magnetic field induced inelastic tunneling of the macroscopic superconducting phase associated with the junction. Furthermore, we show the voltage-drop over the junction is proportional to the average population of the vibrational modes in the stationary regime, a phenomena which can be used to probe the level of cooling.
We investigate the quantum tunneling of electrons in an AA-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) $n$-$p$ junction and $n$-$p$-$n$ junction. We show that Klein tunneling of an electron can occur in this system. The quasiparticles are not only chiral but are additionally described by a `cone index'. Due to the orthogonality of states with different cone indexes, electron transport across a potential barrier must strictly conserve the cone index and this leads to the protected cone transport which is unique in AA-stacked BLG. Together with the negative refraction of electrons, electrons residing in diff…
The influence of ballistic channels superimposed on tunneling conduction channels in magnetic tunnel junctions has been studied in a manganese oxide based tunneling device. Inversion of magnetoresistance has been observed in magnetic tunnel junctions with pinhole nanocontacts over a broad temperature range. The tunnel magnetoresistance undergoes a change of sign at higher bias and temperature. This phenomenon is attributed to the parallel conduction channels consisting of spin conserved ballistic transport through the pinhole contact where the transmission probability is close to unity and spi…
In this contribution, we calculate the spin-dependent ballistic and coherent transport through epitaxial Fe/ZnSe (001) simple and double magnetic tunnel junctions with two different interface terminations: Zn-terminated and Se-terminated. The electronic structure of the junctions is modeled by a second-nearest neighbors {\it spd} tight-binding Hamiltonian parametrized to {\it ab initio} calculated band structures, while the conductances and the tunneling magnetoresistance are calculated within Landauer's formalism. The calculations are done at zero bias voltage and as a function of energy. We …
In this work we discuss the combined effects of finite-range electron-electron interaction and finite-range tunneling on the transport properties of ultrasmall tunnel junctions. We show that the Coulomb blockade phenomenon is deeply influenced by the interplay between the geometry and the screening properties of the contacts. In particular if the interaction range is smaller than the size of the tunneling region a "weakly correlated" regime emerges in which the Coulomb blockade gap $\D$ is significantly reduced. In this regime $\D$ is not simply given by the conventional charging energy of the…
