We evaluate in this work the hydrodynamic transport coefficients of a granular binary mixture in $d$ dimensions. In order to eliminate the observed disagreement (for strong dissipation) between computer simulations and previously calculated theoretical transport coefficients for a monocomponent gas, we obtain explicit expressions of the seven Navier-Stokes transport coefficients with the use of a new Sonine approach in the Chapman-Enskog theory. Our new approach consists in replacing, where appropriate in the Chapman-Enskog procedure, the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution weight function (used in the standard first Sonine approximation) by the homogeneous cooling state distribution for each species. The rationale for doing this lies in the fact that, as it is well known, the non-Maxwellian contributions to the distribution function of the granular mixture become more important in the range of strong dissipation we are interested in. The form of the transport coefficients is quite common in both standard and modified Sonine approximations, the distinction appearing in the explicit form of the different collision frequencies associated with the transport coefficients. Additionally, we numerically solve by means of the direct simulation Monte Carlo method the inelastic Boltzmann equation to get the diffusion and the shear viscosity coefficients for two and three dimensions. As in the case of a monocomponent gas, the modified Sonine approximation improves the estimates of the standard one, showing again the reliability of this method at strong values of dissipation.
In its simplest statistical-mechanical description, a granular fluid can be modeled as composed of smooth inelastic hard spheres (with a constant coefficient of normal restitution $α$) whose velocity distribution function obeys the Enskog-Boltzmann equation. The basic state of a granular fluid is the homogeneous cooling state, characterized by a homogeneous, isotropic, and stationary distribution of scaled velocities, $F(\mathbf{c})$. The behavior of $F(\mathbf{c})$ in the domain of thermal velocities ($c\sim 1$) can be characterized by the two first non-trivial coefficients ($a_2$ and $a_3$) …
A recent segregation criterion [V. Garzó, Phys. Rev. E \textbf{78}, 020301(R) (2008)] based on the thermal diffusion factor $Λ$ of an intruder in a heated granular gas described by the inelastic Enskog equation is revisited. The sign of $Λ$ provides a criterion for the transition between the Brazil-nut effect (BNE) and the reverse Brazil-nut effect (RBNE). The present theory incorporates two extra ingredients not accounted for by the previous theoretical attempt. First, the theory is based upon the second Sonine approximation to the transport coefficients of the mass flux of intruder. Second, …
Kinetic properties of a granular gas of viscoelastic particles in a homogeneous cooling state are studied analytically and numerically. We employ the most recent expression for the velocity-dependent restitution coefficient for colliding viscoelastic particles, which allows to describe systems with large inelasticity. In contrast to previous studies, the third coefficient a3 of the Sonine polynomials expansion of the velocity distribution function is taken into account. We observe a complicated evolution of this coefficient. Moreover, we find that a3 is always of the same order of magnitude as…
The mass flux of a low-density granular binary mixture obtained previously by solving the Boltzmann equation by means of the Chapman-Enskog method is considered further. As in the elastic case, the associated transport coefficients $D$, $D_p$ and $D'$ are given in terms of the solutions of a set of coupled linear integral equations which are approximately solved by considering the first and second Sonine approximations. The diffusion coefficients are explicitly obtained as functions of the coefficients of restitution and the parameters of the mixture (masses, diameters and concentration) and t…
We consider a dilute granular gas of hard spheres colliding inelastically with coefficients of normal and tangential restitution $α$ and $β$, respectively. The basic quantities characterizing the distribution function $f(\mathbf{v},\bmω)$ of linear ($\mathbf{v}$) and angular ($\bmω$) velocities are the second-degree moments defining the translational ($T^\text{tr}$) and rotational ($T^\text{rot}$) temperatures. The deviation of $f$ from the Maxwellian distribution parameterized by $T^\text{tr}$ and $T^\text{rot}$ can be measured by the cumulants associated with the fourth-degree velocity momen…
We perform large-scale event-driven Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for granular gases of particles interacting with the impact-velocity dependent restitution coefficient. We use the simplest first-principle collision model of viscoelastic spheres. Both cases of force-free and uniformly heated gases are studied. We formulate a simplified model of an effective constant restitution coefficient, which depends on a current granular temperature and compute the effective constant restitution coefficient, using the kinetic theory. We develop a theory of the velocity distribution function for driv…
We study a dilute granular gas immersed in a thermal bath made of smaller particles with masses not much smaller than the granular ones in this work. Granular particles are assumed to have inelastic and hard interactions, losing energy in collisions as accounted by a constant coefficient of normal restitution. The interaction with the thermal bath is modeled by a nonlinear drag force plus a white-noise stochastic force. The kinetic theory for this system is described by an Enskog--Fokker--Planck equation for the one-particle velocity distribution function. To get explicit results of the temper…
Granular fluid thermostatted by a bath of elastic hard spheres

The Navier-Stokes transport coefficients of a granular dense fluid of smooth inelastic hard disks or spheres are explicitly determined by solving the inelastic Enskog equation by means of Grad's moment method. The transport coefficients are explicitly determined as functions of the (constant) coefficient of restitution and the solid volume fraction. In addition, the cooling rate is also calculated to first order in the spatial gradients. The calculations are performed for an arbitrary number of dimensions. The results are not limited to small dissipation and are expected to apply at moderate d…
The transport coefficients for dilute granular gases of inelastic and rough hard disks or spheres with constant coefficients of normal ($α$) and tangential ($β$) restitution are obtained in a unified framework as functions of the number of translational ($d_t$) and rotational ($d_r$) degrees of freedom. The derivation is carried out by means of the Chapman--Enskog method with a Sonine-like approximation in which, in contrast to previous approaches, the reference distribution function for angular velocities does not need to be specified. The well-known case of purely smooth $d$-dimensional part…
We develop the rheology of a dilute granular gas mixture. Motivated by the interaction of charged granular particles, we assume that the grains interact via a square shoulder and well potential. Employing kinetic theory, we compute the temperature and the shear viscosity as functions of the shear rate. Numerical simulations confirm our results above the critical shear rate. At a shear rate below a critical value, clustering of the particles occurs.
It is well-recognized that granular media under rapid flow conditions can be modeled as a gas of hard spheres with inelastic collisions. At moderate densities, a fundamental basis for the determination of the granular hydrodynamics is provided by the Enskog kinetic equation conveniently adapted to account for inelastic collisions. A surprising result (compared to its molecular gas counterpart) for granular mixtures is the failure of the energy equipartition, even in homogeneous states. This means that the partial temperatures $T_i$ (measuring the mean kinetic energy of each species) are differ…
We study the bulk properties of isotropic bidisperse granular mixtures using discrete element simulations. The focus is on the influence of the size (radius) ratio of the two constituents and volume fraction on the mixture properties. We show that the effective bulk modulus of a dense granular (base) assembly can be enhanced by up to 20% by substituting as little as 5% of its volume with smaller sized particles. Particles of similar sizes barely affect the macroscopic properties of the mixture. On the other extreme, when a huge number of fine particles are included, most of them lie in the voi…
We report the behaviour of mixtures of fine bronze and glass spheres under sinusoidal vertical vibration. Depending upon the ratio of their diameters and the amplitude and frequency of the vibration, we observe the formation of sharp separation boundaries between glass-rich and bronze-rich phases, the absence of gross convection which would mix these phases, and a number of oscillatory and non-periodic behaviours. These phenomena are related to the differential air damping of the glass and bronze grains, disappearing completely in the absence of air.
The Boltzmann equation for inelastic and rough hard spheres is considered as a model of a dilute granular gas. In this model, the collisions are characterized by constant coefficients of normal and tangential restitution and hence the translational and rotational degrees of freedom are coupled. A normal solution to the Boltzmann equation is obtained by means of the Chapman-Enskog method for states near the homogeneous cooling state. The analysis is carried out to first order in the spatial gradients of the number density, the flow velocity, and the granular temperature. The constitutive equati…
The Navier--Stokes transport coefficients for a model of a confined quasi-two-dimensional granular binary mixture of inelastic hard spheres are determined from the Boltzmann kinetic equation. A normal or hydrodynamic solution to the Boltzmann equation is obtained via the Chapman--Enskog method for states near the local version of the homogeneous time-dependent state. The mass, momentum, and heat fluxes are determined to first order in the spatial gradients of the hydrodynamic fields, and the associated transport coefficients are identified. As expected, they are given in terms of the solutions…

In this review, a theoretical description is provided for the solid (granular) phase of the gas-solid flows that are the focus of this book. Emphasis is placed on the fundamental concepts involved in deriving a macroscopic hydrodynamic description for the granular material in terms of the hydrodynamic fields (species densities, flow velocity, and the granular temperature) from a prescribed "microscopic" interaction among the grains. To this end, the role of the interstitial gas phase, body forces such as gravity, and other coupling to the environment are suppressed and retained only via a poss…
The homogeneous cooling state (HCS) of a granular gas described by the inelastic Boltzmann equation is reconsidered. As usual, particles are taken as inelastic hard disks or spheres, but now the coefficient of normal restitution $α$ is allowed to take negative values $α\in[-1,1]$, a simple way of modeling more complicated inelastic interactions. The distribution function of the HCS is studied at the long-time limit, as well as for intermediate times. At the long-time limit, the relevant information of the HCS is given by a scaling distribution function $ϕ_s(c)$, where the time dependence occur…
