We have successfully synthesized one member of LnFeAsO (Ln stands for lanthanides) with Ln=Tb. By partial substitution of Tb$^{3+}$ by Th$^{4+}$, superconductivity with onset $T_{c}$ up to 52 K was observed. In the undoped parent compound, the magnetic moments of Tb$^{3+}$ ions order antiferromagnetically (AFM) at $T_N$ of 2.5 K, and there exists an anomaly in the resistivity at $T^*$ of about 124 K which corresponds to the structural phase transition and/or AFM ordering of magnetic moments of Fe$^{2+}$ ions. This anomaly is severely suppressed by Th doping, similar to the cases of F doped LnFeAsO series. Thermopower measurements show that the charge carrier is electron-like for both undoped and Th doped compounds, and enhanced thermopower in Th doped samples was observed.
$^{19}$F NMR measurements in optimally electron-doped La$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$AsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ superconductors are presented. In these materials the effect of Mn doping on the superconducting phase is studied for two series of compounds ($y= 0$ and $y= 0.2$) where the chemical pressure is varied by substituting La with Y. In the $y=0.2$ series superconductivity is suppressed for Mn contents an order of magnitude larger than for the $y=0$ series. For both series a peak in the $^{19}$F NMR nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ emerges upon Mn doping and gets significantly…
We report 75As-NMR study on the Fe-pnictide high-Tc superconductor Y0.95La0.05FeAsO_{1-y} (Y0.95La0.051111) with Tc=50 K that includes no magnetic rare-earth elements. The measurement of the nuclear-spin lattice-relaxation rate 75(1/T1) has revealed that the nodeless bulk superconductivity takes place at Tc=50 K while antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations (AFSFs) develop moderately in the normal state. These features are consistently described by the multiple fully-gapped s_\pm-wave model based on the Fermi-surface (FS) nesting. Incorporating the theory based on band calculations, we propose tha…
Superconducting transition under pressure ($P$) has been investigated for optimum-doped $R$FeAsO$_{\rm 1-x}$F$_{\rm x}$ ($R$=La, Ce$-$Sm) by dc magnetization measurements. For $R$=La, $T_{\rm c}$ is found to be pressure independent up to $P$$\sim$3.0 GPa and then shows a monotonic decrease with increasing pressure. The plateau width decreases for the system with smaller lattice constants, and shrinks to almost zero for $R$=Sm. From the $T_{\rm c}$($P$) data, we construct the $T_{\rm c}$ evolution map on the height of the As atom from the Fe-plane $h_{\rm As}$ versus lattice constant $a$ or $c$…
In this paper we report a detailed $μ^{+}$SR and {}$^{19}$F-NMR study of the La$_{0.7}$Y$_{0.3}$FeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ class of materials. Here, the diamagnetic La$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$ substitution increases chemical pressure and, accordingly, sizeably enhances the optimal superconducting transition temperature. We investigate the magnetic-superconducting phase transition by keeping the Y content constant ($y = 0.3$) and by varying the F content in the range $0.025 \leq x \leq 0.15$. Our results show how magnetism and superconductivity coexist for $x = 0.065$. Such coexistence is due to segregation of…
In the family of the iron-based superconductors, the $RE$FeAsO-type compounds (with $RE$ being a rare-earth metal) exhibit the highest bulk superconducting transition temperatures ($T_{\mathrm{c}}$) up to $55\ \textrm{K}$ and thus hold the key to the elusive pairing mechanism. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the intrinsic electronic structure of SmFe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08}$AsO ($T_{\mathrm{c}}=18\ \textrm{K}$) is highly nontrivial and consists of multiple band-edge singularities in close proximity to the Fermi level. However, it remains unclear whether these singularities are generic to th…
We have synthesized four iron-based oxyarsenide superconductors Rb$Ln_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$O$_2$ ($Ln$ = Sm, Tb, Dy and Ho) resulting from the intergrowth of RbFe$_2$As$_2$ and $Ln$FeAsO. It is found that the lattice match between RbFe$_2$As$_2$ and $Ln$FeAsO is crucial for the phase formation. The structural intergrowth leads to double asymmetric Fe$_2$As$_2$ layers that are separated by insulating $Ln_2$O$_2$ slabs. Consequently, the materials are intrinsically doped at a level of 0.25 holes/Fe-atom and, bulk superconductivity emerges at $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 35.8, 34.7, 34.3 and 33.8 K, respectively, f…
In the iron-based high-Tc bulk superconductors, Tc above 50K was only observed in the electron-doped 1111-type compounds. Here we revisit the electron-doped SmFeAsO polycrystals to make a further investigation for the highest T-c in these materials. To introduce more electron carriers and less crystal lattice distortions, we study the Th and F codoping effects into the Sm-O layers with heavy electron doping. Dozens of Sm1-x Th-x FeAsO1-y F-y samples are synthesized through the solid state reaction method, and these samples are carefully characterized by the structural, resistive, and magnetic …
We report on detailed ac calorimetry measurements under high pressure and magnetic field of CeRhIn5. Under hydrostatic pressure the antiferromagnetic order vanishes near p_c*=2 GPa due to a first order transition. Superconductivity is found for pressures above 1.5 GPa inside the magnetic ordered phase. However, the superconductivity differ from the pure homogeneous superconducting ground state above 2 GPa. The application of an external magnetic field H || ab induces a transition inside the superconducting state above pc* which is strongly related to the re-entrance of the antiferromagnetism w…
We present superconducting properties of single crystalline Ba(Fe$_{0.9}$Co$_{0.1}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ by measuring magnetization, resistivity, upper critical field, Hall coefficient, and magneto-optical images. The magnetization measurements reveal fish-tail hysteresis loop at high temperatures and relatively high critical current density above $J_{c}=10^{5}$ A/cm$^{2}$ at low temperatures. Upper critical field determined by resistive transition is anisotropic with anisotropic parameter $\sim$ 3.5. Hall effect measurements indicate that Ba(Fe$_{0.9}$Co$_{0.1}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is a multiband system…
We study the insulating phase of disordered indium oxide films that undergo a field-tuned superconductor-insulator transition. The transport measurements in a perpendicular magnetic field show distinct regimes of strongly fluctuating order-parameter amplitude and phase, and reveal a wide range of insulator strength in samples with differing disorder, despite the similarity in behavior near the SIT. We characterize the strength of the insulating phase and compare it to the superconducting strength. We find that the films do not return to the expected normal state even at high perpendicular magn…
Superconductivity in FeSe was investigated under high pressure through the measurements of DC magnetization by using a diamond anvil cell. We successfully observed that the disappearance of the superconductivity as a results of the appearance of the non-superconducting ortho I\hspace{-1pt}I phase above $\sim$7 GPa ($\sim$5 GPa), when Ar (glycerin) is used as the pressure transmitting media. Contrary to this, it has been found that the superconductivity even survives under pressure above 7 GPa, when the thickness ($t$) of a platelet-single crystal specimen is reduced. The survival of the superc…
Superconductivity above 25K, and possibly above 40K, has recently been discovered in $LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$ and related compounds. We propose that this is another example of the mechanism of hole superconductivity at play. This requires the existence of hole carriers at the Fermi energy, which appears to contradict current observations. We propose that two-band conduction is taking place in these materials, that the negative ion $As^{-3}$ plays a key role, and that superconductivity is non-phononic and driven by pairing and undressing of heavily dressed hole carriers to lower their kinetic energy.…
A $^{59}$Co nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) was performed on a single-crystalline ferromagnetic (FM) superconductor UCoGe under pressure. The FM phase vanished at a critical pressure $P_c$, and the NQR spectrum just below $P_c$ showed phase separation of the FM and paramagnetic (PM) phases below Curie temperature $T_{\textrm{Curie}}$, suggesting first-order FM quantum phase transition (QPT). We found that the internal field was absent above $P_c$, but the superconductivity is almost unchanged. This result suggests the existence of the nonunitary to unitary transition of the superconductivit…
Following the recent discovery of very high temperature conventional superconductivity in sulfur hydride (critical temperature Tc of 203 K, Ref1) we searched for superconductivity in other hydrides and found that a covalent hydride phosphine (PH3) also exhibits a high Tc >100 K at pressure P > 200 GPa as determined from four-probe electrical measurements.
Magnetization and resistance measurements were carried out on carbon-based multiwall nanotubes. Both magnetization and resistance data can be consistently explained in terms of bulk superconductivity above 400 K although we cannot completely rule out other possible explanations to the data.
Searching for superconductivity with Tc near room temperature is of great interest both for fundamental science & many potential applications. Here we report the experimental discovery of superconductivity with maximum critical temperature (Tc) above 210 K in calcium superhydrides, the new alkali earth hydrides experimentally showing superconductivity above 200 K in addition to sulfur hydride & rare-earth hydride system. The materials are synthesized at the synergetic conditions of 160~190 GPa and ~2000 K using diamond anvil cell combined with in-situ laser heating technique. The superconducti…
Conventional superconductivity follows Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer(BCS) theory of electrons-pairing in momentum-space, while superfluidity is the Bose-Einstein condensation(BEC) of atoms paired in real-space. These properties of solid metals and ultra-cold gases, respectively, are connected by the BCS-BEC crossover. Here we investigate the band dispersions in FeTe$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$($T_c$ = 14.5 K $\sim$ 1.2 meV) in an accessible range below and above the Fermi level($E_F$) using ultra-high resolution laser angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We uncover an electron band lying just 0.7 meV …
A pivotal step toward understanding unconventional superconductors would be to decipher how superconductivity emerges from the unusual normal state upon cooling. In the cuprates, traces of superconducting pairing appear above the macroscopic transition temperature $T_c$, yet extensive investigation has led to disparate conclusions. The main difficulty has been the separation of superconducting contributions from complex normal state behaviour. Here we avoid this problem by measuring the nonlinear conductivity, an observable that is zero in the normal state. We uncover for several representativ…
A new analysis of 63Cu and 17O NMR shift data on La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 is reported that supports earlier work arguing for a two-component description of this material, but conflicts with the widely held view that the cuprates are a one-component system. The data are analyzed in terms of two components A and B with susceptibilities Chi(A), Chi(B), and Chi(AB)=Chi(BA) . We find that above Tc, Chi(AB) and Chi(BB) are independent of temperature and obtain for the first time the temperature dependence of all three susceptibilities above Tc as well as the complete temperature dependence of Chi(AA)+Chi(AB…
The ability of single grain boundaries in YBa2Cu3Ox bicrystalline rings to carry electrical current is found to be significantly enhanced under hydrostatic pressure. Nearly hydrostatic pressures are applied to the alkali metals Li, Na, and K. in a search for superconductivity. Whereas Li becomes superconducting above 20 GPa at temperatures as high as 15 K, no superconductivity was observed above 4 K in Na to 65 GPa nor in K above 4 K to 43.5 GPa or above 1.5 K to 35 GPa.
We use transport and magnetization measurements to study the effect of Cr-doping to the phase diagram of the electron-doped superconducting BaFe2-xNixAs2 iron pnictides. In principle, adding Cr to electron-doped BaFe2-xNixAs2 should be equivalent to the effect of hole-doping. However, we find that Cr doping suppresses superconductivity via impurity effect, while not affecting the normal state resistivity above 100 K. We establish the phase diagram of Cr-doped BaFe2-x-yNixCryAs2 iron pnictides, and demonstrate that Cr-doping near optimal superconductivity restore the long-range antiferromagneti…
We use electronic Raman scattering to study the model single-layer cuprate superconductor HgBa2CuO4+d. In an overdoped sample, we observe a pronounced amplitude enhancement of a high-energy peak related to two-magnon excitations in insulating cuprates upon cooling below the critical temperature Tc. This effect is accompanied by the appearance of the superconducting gap and a pairing peak above the gap in the Raman spectrum, and it can be understood as a consequence of feedback of the Cooper pairing interaction on the high-energy magnetic fluctuations. All of these effects occur already above T…
The theoretical analysis of the Cooper pair susceptibility shows the two-band Fe-based superconductors (FeSC) to support the existence of the phase with nonzero Cooper pair momentum (called the Fulde--Ferrel--Larkin--Ovchinnikov phase or shortly FFLO), regardless of the order parameter symmetry. Moreover this phase for the FeSC model with $s_{\pm}$ symmetry is the ground state of the system near the Pauli limit. This article discusses the phase diagram $h-T$ for FeSC in the two-band model and its physical consequences. We compare the results for the superconducting order parameter with s-wave …
We report the magnetoresistance in the novel spin-triplet superconductor UTe2 under pressure close to the critical pressure Pc, where the superconducting phase terminates, for field along the three a, b and c-axes in the orthorhombic structure. The superconducting phase for H // a-axis just below Pc shows a field-reentrant behavior due to the competition with the emergence of magnetic order at low fields. The upper critical field Hc2 for H // c-axis shows a quasi-vertical increase in the H-T phase diagram just below Pc, indicating that superconductivity is reinforced by the strong fluctuations…
We report the experimental discovery of superconductivity with critical temperature Tc above 70 K in zirconium polyhydrides, the record high so far for 3d transition metal hydrides. The superconducting zirconium polyhydrides are synthesized at the extreme conditions above 200 GPa & 2000 K by using diamond anvil cell combined with in-situ laser heating. Superconductivity was observed in the samples maintained at the same pressure upon quenched from heating.
Recently, interface has been employed to enhance superconductivity in the single-layer FeSe films grown on SrTiO3(001)(STO) with a possible Tc of ~ 80 K, which is nearly ten times of the Tc of bulk FeSe and is above the Tc record of 56 K for the bulk Fe-based superconductors. This work together with those on superconducting oxides interfaces revives the long-standing idea that electron pairing at a two-dimensional (2D) interface between two different materials is a potential path to high transition temperature (Tc) superconductivity. Subsequent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES)…
The electrical resistivity ρ(T) and heat capacity C(T) on single crystals of SrNi2As2 and EuNi2As2 are reported. While there is no evidence for a structural transition in either compound, SrNi2As2 is found to be a bulk superconductor at T_c=0.62 K with a Sommerfeld coefficient of γ= 8.7 mJ/mol K^2 and a small upper critical field H_{c2} \sim 200 Oe. No superconductivity was found in EuNi2As2 above 0.4 K, but anomalies in ρand C reveal that magnetic order associated with the Eu^{2+} magnetic moments occurs at T_m = 14 K.
Lanthanum (La) is the first member of the rare-earth series of elements that has recently raised considerable interest because of its unique high-Tc superhydride LaH10. Although several studies have found superconductivity and phase transitions in metallic La, there was a lack of experimental evidence for the equation of state (EoS) and superconductivity above one megabar pressure. Here, we extend the pressure range up to 140 GPa to study EoS and superconductivity of lanthanum via electrical transport and X-ray diffraction measurements. The experimental XRD patterns point to a phase transition…
The dependence of the superconducting transition temperature Tc of CaC6 has been determined as a function of hydrostatic pressure in both helium-loaded gas and diamond-anvil cells to 0.6 and 32 GPa, respectively. Following an initial increase at the rate +0.39(1) K/GPa, Tc drops abruptly from 15 K to 4 K at 10 GPa. Synchrotron x-ray measurements to 15 GPa point to a structural transition near 10 GPa from a rhombohedral to a higher symmetry phase.
Diamond has always been adored as a jewel. Even more fascinating is its outstanding physical properties; it is the hardest material known in the world with the highest thermal conductivity. Meanwhile, when we turn to its electrical properties, diamond is a rather featureless electrical insulator. However, with boron doping, it becomes a p-type semiconductor, with boron acting as a charge acceptor. Therefore the recent news of superconductivity in heavily boron-doped diamond synthesized by high pressure sintering was received with considerable surprise. Opening up new possibilities for diamond-…
It has been reported that graphite hosts room temperature superconductivity. Here we provide new results that confirm these claims on different samples of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and commercial flexible graphite gaskets (FGG). After subtraction of the intrinsic graphite diamagnetism, magnetization measurements show convoluted ferromagnetism and superconducting-like hysteresis loops. The ferromagnetism is deconvoluted by fitting with a sigmoidal function and subtracting it from the data. The obtained superconducting-like hysteresis loops are followed to the highest available t…
The nature of the underdoped pseudogap regime of the high-temperature superconductors has been a matter of long-term debate. On quite general grounds, one expects that due to their low superfluid densities and short correlation lengths, superconducting fluctuations will be significant for transport and thermodynamic properties in this part of the phase diagram. Although there is ample experimental evidence for such correlations, there has been disagreement about how high in temperature they may persist, their role in the phenomenology of the pseudogap, and their significance for understanding …
Detailed analyses are made on previously published data for multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The field dependence of the Hall voltage, the temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient, and the magnetoresistance effect (Phys. Rev. Lett. 72, 697 (1994)) can all be consistently explained in terms of the coexistence of physically separated tubes and Josephson-coupled superconducting tubes with superconductivity above room temperature. The observed temperature dependencies of the remnant magnetization, the diamagnetic susceptibility, and the conductance are consistent with superconductivity above r…
We prepared single unit cell FeSe films on GaO$_{2-δ}$ terminated perovskite NdGaO$_{3}$(110) substrates and performed ex situ transport and scanning transmission electron microscopy measurements on the FeTe protected films. Our experimental measurements showed that the single unit cell FeSe films interfaced with GaO$_{2-δ}$ layer are electron doped via interface charge transfer. Most importantly, this type of heterostructure can host interface enhanced superconductivity with an onset temperature of about 28 K, which is much higher than the value of 8 K in bulk FeSe. Our work indicates that Fe…
A new layered iron arsenide oxide (Fe2As2)(Ca4(Mg,Ti)3Oy) was discovered. Its crystal structure is tetragonal with a space group of I4/mmm consisted of the anti-fluorite type FeAs layer and blocking layer of triple perovskite cells and is identical with (Fe2As2)(Sr4(Sc,Ti)3O8) discovered in our previous study. The lattice constants of (Fe2As2)(Ca4(Mg,Ti)3Oy) are a = 3.877 A and c = 33.37 A. This compound exhibited bulk superconductivity up to 43 K in susceptibility measurement without intentional carrier doping. A resistivity drop was observed at ~47 K and zero resistance was achieved at 42 K.…
The coexistence and competition between superconductivity and electronic orders, such as spin or charge density waves, have been a central issue in high transition-temperature (${T_{\rm c}}$) superconductors. Unlike other iron-based superconductors, FeSe exhibits nematic ordering without magnetism whose relationship with its superconductivity remains unclear. More importantly, a pressure-induced fourfold increase of ${T_{\rm c}}$ has been reported, which poses a profound mystery. Here we report high-pressure magnetotransport measurements in FeSe up to $\sim9$ GPa, which uncover a hidden magnet…
The search for new superconducting compounds with higher critical temperatures $T_{c}^{\prime}$s has long been the very heart of scientific research on superconductivity. It took 75 years for scientists to push the $T_{c}$ above liquid nitrogen boiling temperature since the discovery of superconductivity. So far, the record high $T_{c}$ of about 130 K at atmosphere pressure was reported in some multilayer Hg(Tl)-Ba-Ca-Cu-O compounds. Meanwhile, sulfur hydride system holds the highest $T_{c}$ of around 200 K at high pressure of about 150 GPa. While keeping these records for superconductivity, e…
The only alkali metal known to be superconducting at ambient pressure is Li at 0.4 mK. Under 30 GPa pressure \textit{T}$_{c}$ for Li rises to 14 K. In addition, nearly 50 years ago the heavy alkali metal Cs was reported to become superconducting near 1.3 K at 12 GPa. In the present experiment the superconductivity of Cs under pressure is confirmed. In addition, strong evidence is presented in electrical resistivity measurements that neighboring Rb also becomes superconducting near 2 K at 55 GPa as it enters the \textit{oC}16 phase, as for Cs, where \textit{T}$_{c}$ decreases under the applicat…
The binary polyhydrides of heavy rare earth lutetium that shares a similar valence electron configuration to lanthanum have been experimentally discovered to be superconductive. The lutetium polyhydrides were successfully synthesized at high pressure and high temperature conditions using a diamond anvil cell in combinations with the in-situ high pressure laser heating technique. The resistance measurements as a function of temperature were performed at the same pressure of synthesis in order to study the transitions of superconductivity (SC). The superconducting transition with a maximum onset…
Cuprate superconductors have long been known to exhibit an energy gap that persists high above the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$). Debate has continued now for decades as to whether it is a precursor superconducting gap or a pseudogap arising from some competing correlation. Failure to resolve this has arguably delayed explaining the origins of superconductivity in these highly complex materials. Here we effectively settle the question by calculating a variety of thermodynamic and spectroscopic properties, exploring the effect of a temperature-dependent pair-breaking term in th…
Properties of oxides are interpreted as a result of existence of the virtual sublattices formed by the atomic quantum states. An infinite cluster with the superconductivity of the Bose-Einstein condensate kind can be formed in the ground state sublattice at certain oxigen atoms concentration in the effectively diluted system of metal atoms (above the percolation threshold). Then the electron pairs concentration n/2 can be much less than the metal atoms concentration N in the oxide. The similar situation takes place in metals with superconductivity of the BCS type. Above the percolation thresho…
It is well known that copper-based perovskite oxides rightly enjoy consensus as high-temperature superconductors on the basis of two signatures: the resistive transition and the Meissner effect. We show that the resistive transitions in carbon nanotubes agree quantitatively with the Langer-Ambegaokar-McCumber-Halperin (LAMH) theory for quasi-1D superconductors although the superconducting transition temperatures can vary from 0.4 K to 750 K for different samples. We have also identified the Meissner effect in the field parallel to the tube axis up to room temperature for aligned and physically…
We report the superconductivity at above 30 K in a new FeSe-layer compound K0.8Fe2Se2 (nominal composition) achieved by metal K intercalating in between FeSe layers. It is isostructural to BaFe2As2 and possesses the highest Tc for FeSe-layer materials so far under ambient pressure. Hall effect indicates the carriers are dominated by electron in this superconductor. We confirm that the observed superconductivity at above 30 K is due to this new FeSe-based 122 phase. Our results demonstrate that FeSe-layer materials are really remarkable superconductors via structure and carrier modulation.
Beginning in 1973, several non-cuprate transition metal and non-transition metal oxides were discovered with superconducting transition temperatures between 10 and 30 K. Retrospectives about these discoveries in spinel structure LiTi2O4 and perovskite structure (Ba,K)(Bi,Pb)O3 are given.
Last year, iron was reported to become superconducting at temperatures below 2K and pressures between 15 and 30 GPa. The evidence presented was a weak resistivity drop, suppressed by a magnetic field above 0.2 T, and a small Meissner signal. However, a compelling demonstration, such as the occurrence of zero resistance, was lacking. Here we report the measurement of a complete resistive transition at 22.2 GPa with an onset slightly above 2 K in two very pure samples of iron, of different origins. The superconductivity appears unusually sensitive to disorder, developing only when the electronic…
The search for room temperature superconductivity has accelerated dramatically in the last few years driven largely by theoretical predictions that first indicated alloying dense hydrogen with other elements could produce conventional phonon-mediated superconductivity at very high temperatures and at accessible pressures, and more recently, with the success of structure search methods that have identified specific candidates and pressure-temperature (P-T) conditions for synthesis. These theoretical advances have prompted improvements in experimental techniques to test these predictions. As a r…
A recent experiment has shown a macroscopic quantum coherent condensate at 203 K, about 19 degrees above the coldest temperature recorded on the Earth, 184 K, in pressurized sulfur hydride. This discovery is relevant not only in material science and condensed matter but also in other fields ranging from quantum computing to quantum physics of living matter. It has given the start to a gold rush looking for other macroscopic quantum coherent condensates in hydrides at the temperature range of living matter 200<Tc<400K. We present here a review of the experimental results and the theoretical wor…
Superconductivity under pressure in FeSe ($T_{\rm c}$$\sim$7.5 K) has been investigated using single-crystal specimens through the measurements of DC magnetization and electrical resistivity. A characteristic three-step increase in $T_{\rm c}$ has been found under hydrostatic pressure up to $\sim$34 K above 7 GPa. The structural transition from a tetragonal phase to an orthorhombic phase ($T_{\rm s}$$\sim$87 K) is found to disappear at $P$$\sim$2.3 GPa, above which $T_{\rm c}$ increases rapidly, suggesting that the superconductivity is enhanced by the tetragonal environment. Under non-hydrosta…
Trying to dope graphite flakes we found that the magnetization of pure, several tens of micrometers grain size graphite powder and after a simple treatment with pure water shows clear and reproducible granular superconducting behavior with a critical temperature above 300K. The observed magnetic characteristics as a function of temperature, magnetic field and time, provide evidence for weakly coupled grains through Josephson interaction, revealing the existence of superconducting vortices.
The use of high pressure to realize superconductivity in the vicinity of room temperature has a long history, much of it focused on achieving this in hydrogen rich materials. This paper provides a brief overview of the work presented at this May 2018 conference, together with background on motivation and techniques, the theoretical predictions of superconductivity in lanthanum hydride, and the subsequent experimental confirmation. Theoretical calculations using density functional based structure search methods combined with BCS type models predicted a new class of dense, hydrogen rich material…
We have studied the magnetic response of two bulk highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) samples with different internal microstructure. For the sample with well defined interfaces, parallel to the graphene layers, the temperature and magnetic field hysteresis are similar to those found recently in water-treated graphite powders. The observed behavior indicates the existence of granular superconductivity above room temperature in agreement with previous reports in other graphite samples. The granular superconductivity behavior is observed only for fields normal to the embedded interfaces, w…

From the magnetic response of Nb-cylinders to time-varying fields the AC-conductivity, $σ'-iσ''$, and the critical current density $J_c^s$ are determined above the upper critical field $H_{c2}$. The field dependencies of $σ'$ and $σ''$ allow us to identify the nucleation of incoherent surface superconductivity (SSC) at $H_{c3}$ and of coherent SSC at $H_{c3}^c\approx 0.81H_{c3}$. The latter result turns out to be independent on different surface roughnesses and surface impurities obtained by surface treatments like chemical (BCP) and electrolytical polishing (EP), and low temperature baking (L…
Searching for superconducting materials with high transition temperature (TC) is one of the most exciting and challenging fields in physics and materials science. Although superconductivity has been discovered for more than 100 years, the copper oxides are so far the only materials with TC above 77 K, the liquid nitrogen boiling point. Here we report an interface engineering method for dramatically raising the TC of superconducting films. We find that one unit-cell (UC) thick films of FeSe grown on SrTiO3 (STO) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) show signatures of superconducting trans…
We report bulk superconductivity at 2.5K in LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 compound through the DC magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements. The synthesized LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 compound is crystallized in tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm and Reitveld refined lattice parameters are a= 4.15(1)A and c=14.02(2)A. The lower critical field of Hc1= 40Oe, at temperature 2K is estimated through the low field magnetization measurements. The LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 compound showed metallic normal state electrical resistivity with residual resistivity value of 1.35mΩ-cm. The compound is type-II su…
