The data-complexity of both satisfiability and finite satisfiability for the two-variable fragment with counting is NP-complete; the data-complexity of both query-answering and finite query-answering for the two-variable guarded fragment with counting is co-NP-complete.
It is known due to the work of Van den Broeck et al [KR, 2014] that weighted first-order model counting (WFOMC) in the two-variable fragment of first-order logic can be solved in time polynomial in the number of domain elements. In this paper we extend this result to the two-variable fragment with counting quantifiers.
We give a quantifier elimination procedures for the extension of Presburger arithmetic with a unary threshold counting quantifier $\exists^{\ge c} y$ that determines whether the number of different $y$ satisfying some formula is at least $c \in \mathbb N$, where $c$ is given in binary. Using a standard quantifier elimination procedure for Presburger arithmetic, the resulting theory is easily seen to be decidable in 4ExpTime. Our main contribution is to develop a novel quantifier-elimination procedure for a more general counting quantifier that decides this theory in 3ExpTime, meaning that it i…
This paper explores the computational complexity of various natural one-variable fragments of first-order modal logics with the addition of counting quantifiers, over both constant and varying domains. The addition of counting quantifiers provides us a rich language with which to succinctly express statements about the quantity of objects satisfying a given first-order property, using a single variable. Optimal NExpTime upper-bounds are provided for the satisfiability problems of the one-variable fragment of the minimal first-order modal logic QK, over both constant and expanding/decreasing do…
We introduce a new type of closure operator on the set of relations, max-implementation, and its weaker analog max-quantification. Then we show that approximation preserving reductions between counting constraint satisfaction problems (#CSPs) are preserved by these two types of closure operators. Together with some previous results this means that the approximation complexity of counting CSPs is determined by partial clones of relations that additionally closed under these new types of closure operators. Galois correspondence of various kind have proved to be quite helpful in the study of the …

Weighted First-Order Model Counting (WFOMC) computes the weighted sum of the models of a first-order logic theory on a given finite domain. First-Order Logic theories that admit polynomial-time WFOMC w.r.t domain cardinality are called domain liftable. We introduce the concept of lifted interpretations as a tool for formulating closed-forms for WFOMC. Using lifted interpretations, we reconstruct the closed-form formula for polynomial-time FOMC in the universally quantified fragment of FO2, earlier proposed by Beame et al. We then expand this closed-form to incorporate cardinality constraints, …
This paper gives a thorough overview of what is known about first-order logic with counting quantifiers and with arithmetic predicates. As a main theorem we show that Presburger arithmetic is closed under unary counting quantifiers. Precisely, this means that for every first-order formula phi(y,z_1,...,z_k) over the signature {<,+} there is a first-order formula psi(x,z_1,...,z_k) which expresses over the structure <Nat,<,+> (respectively, over initial segments of this structure) that the variable x is interpreted exactly by the number of possible interpretations of the variable y for which th…
This paper presents an approximation approach to verifying counter systems with respect to properties formulated in an expressive counting extension of linear temporal logic. It can express, e.g., that the number of acknowledgements never exceeds the number of requests to a service, by counting specific positions along a run and imposing arithmetic constraints. The addressed problem is undecidable and therefore solved on flat under-approximations of a system. This provides a flexibly adjustable trade-off between exhaustiveness and computational effort, similar to bounded model checking. Recent…
We study constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) in the presence of counting quantifiers $\exists^{\geq j}$, asserting the existence of $j$ distinct witnesses for the variable in question. As a continuation of our previous (CSR 2012) paper, we focus on the complexity of undirected graph templates. As our main contribution, we settle the two principal open questions proposed in (CSR 2012). Firstly, we complete the classification of clique templates by proving a full trichotomy for all possible combinations of counting quantifiers and clique sizes, placing each case either in P, NP-complete or P…
The finite satisfiability problem for the two-variable fragment of first-order logic interpreted over trees was recently shown to be ExpSpace-complete. We consider two extensions of this logic. We show that adding either additional binary symbols or counting quantifiers to the logic does not affect the complexity of the finite satisfiability problem. However, combining the two extensions and adding both binary symbols and counting quantifiers leads to an explosion of this complexity. We also compare the expressive power of the two-variable fragment over trees with its extension with counting q…
We investigate structures that can be represented by omega-automata, so called omega-automatic structures, and prove that relations defined over such structures in first-order logic expanded by the first-order quantifiers `there exist at most $\aleph_0$ many', 'there exist finitely many' and 'there exist $k$ modulo $m$ many' are omega-regular. The proof identifies certain algebraic properties of omega-semigroups. As a consequence an omega-regular equivalence relation of countable index has an omega-regular set of representatives. This implies Blumensath's conjecture that a countable structure …
During the last decades, a lot of effort was put into identifying decidable fragments of first-order logic. Such efforts gave birth, among the others, to the two-variable fragment and the guarded fragment, depending on the type of restriction imposed on formulae from the language. Despite the success of the mentioned logics in areas like formal verification and knowledge representation, such first-order fragments are too weak to express even the simplest statistical constraints, required for modelling of influence networks or in statistical reasoning. In this work we investigate the extensions…
The study of various decision problems for logic fragments has a long history in computer science. This paper is on the membership problem for a fragment of first-order logic over infinite words; the membership problem asks for a given language whether it is definable in some fixed fragment. The alphabetic topology was introduced as part of an effective characterization of the fragment $Σ_2$ over infinite words. Here, $Σ_2$ consists of the first-order formulas with two blocks of quantifiers, starting with an existential quantifier. Its Boolean closure is $\mathbb{B}Σ_2$. Our first main result …
Separation Logic (SL) is a well-known assertion language used in Hoare-style modular proof systems for programs with dynamically allocated data structures. In this paper we investigate the fragment of first-order SL restricted to the Bernays-Schoenfinkel-Ramsey quantifier prefix $\exists^*\forall^*$, where the quantified variables range over the set of memory locations. When this set is uninterpreted (has no associated theory) the fragment is PSPACE-complete, which matches the complexity of the quantifier-free fragment. However, SL becomes undecidable when the quantifier prefix belongs to $\ex…
This paper is a study of weighted counting of the solutions of acyclic conjunctive queries ($\ACQ$). The unweighted quantifier free version of this problem is known to be tractable (for combined complexity), but it is also known that introducing even a single quantified variable makes it $\sP$-hard. We first show that weighted counting for quantifier-free $\ACQ$ is still tractable and that even minimalistic extensions of the problem lead to hard cases. We then introduce a new parameter for quantified queries that permits to isolate large island of tractability. We show that, up to a standard a…
Craig interpolation has emerged as an effective means of generating candidate program invariants. We present interpolation procedures for the theories of Presburger arithmetic combined with (i) uninterpreted predicates (QPA+UP), (ii) uninterpreted functions (QPA+UF) and (iii) extensional arrays (QPA+AR). We prove that none of these combinations can be effectively interpolated without the use of quantifiers, even if the input formulae are quantifier-free. We go on to identify fragments of QPA+UP and QPA+UF with restricted forms of guarded quantification that are closed under interpolation. Form…
The subsumption problem with respect to terminologies in the description logic ALC is EXPTIME-complete. We investigate the computational complexity of fragments of this problem by means of allowed Boolean operators. Hereto we make use of the notion of clones in the context of Post's lattice. Furthermore we consider all four possible quantifier combinations for each fragment parameterized by a clone. We will see that depending on what quantifiers are available the classification will be either tripartite or a quartering.
We study Gaifman locality and Hanf locality of an extension of first-order logic with modulo p counting quantifiers (FO+MOD_p, for short) with arbitrary numerical predicates. We require that the validity of formulas is independent of the particular interpretation of the numerical predicates and refer to such formulas as arb-invariant formulas. This paper gives a detailed picture of locality and non-locality properties of arb-invariant FO+MOD_p. For example, on the class of all finite structures, for any p >= 2, arb-invariant FO+MOD_p is neither Hanf nor Gaifman local with respect to a sublinea…
We study the extension of dependence logic D by a majority quantifier M over finite structures. We show that the resulting logic is equi-expressive with the extension of second-order logic by second-order majority quantifiers of all arities. Our results imply that, from the point of view of descriptive complexity theory, D(M) captures the complexity class counting hierarchy.
The satisfiability problem of the branching time logic CTL is studied in terms of computational complexity. Tight upper and lower bounds are provided for each temporal operator fragment. In parallel, the minimal model size is studied with a suitable notion of minimality. Thirdly, flat CTL is investigated, i.e., formulas with very low temporal operator nesting depth. A sharp dichotomy is shown in terms of complexity and minimal models: Temporal depth one has low expressive power, while temporal depth two is equivalent to full CTL.
We contribute to the refined understanding of the language-logic-algebra interplay in the context of first-order properties of countable words. We establish decidable algebraic characterizations of one variable fragment of FO as well as boolean closure of existential fragment of FO via a strengthening of Simon's theorem about piecewise testable languages. We propose a new extension of FO which admits infinitary quantifiers to reason about the inherent infinitary properties of countable words. We provide a very natural and hierarchical block-product based characterization of the new extension. …
Adding modular predicates yields a generalization of first-order logic FO over words. The expressive power of FO[<,MOD] with order comparison $x<y$ and predicates for $x \equiv i \mod n$ has been investigated by Barrington, Compton, Straubing and Therien. The study of FO[<,MOD]-fragments was initiated by Chaubard, Pin and Straubing. More recently, Dartois and Paperman showed that definability in the two-variable fragment FO2[<,MOD] is decidable. In this paper we continue this line of work. We give an effective algebraic characterization of the word languages in Sigma2[<,MOD]. The fragment Sigm…
Uniform one-dimensional fragment UF1^= is a formalism obtained from first-order logic by limiting quantification to applications of blocks of existential (universal) quantifiers such that at most one variable remains free in the quantified formula. The fragment is closed under Boolean operations, but additional restrictions (called uniformity conditions) apply to combinations of atomic formulas with two or more variables. The fragment can be seen as a canonical generalization of two-variable logic, defined in order to be able to deal with relations of arbitrary arities. The fragment was introd…
We prove near-optimal trade-offs for quantifier depth versus number of variables in first-order logic by exhibiting pairs of $n$-element structures that can be distinguished by a $k$-variable first-order sentence but where every such sentence requires quantifier depth at least $n^{Ω(k/\log k)}$. Our trade-offs also apply to first-order counting logic, and by the known connection to the $k$-dimensional Weisfeiler--Leman algorithm imply near-optimal lower bounds on the number of refinement iterations. A key component in our proof is the hardness condensation technique recently introduced by [Raz…
In this paper we address the decision problem for a fragment of set theory with restricted quantification which extends the language studied in [4] with pair related quantifiers and constructs, in view of possible applications in the field of knowledge representation. We will also show that the decision problem for our language has a non-deterministic exponential time complexity. However, for the restricted case of formulae whose quantifier prefixes have length bounded by a constant, the decision problem becomes NP-complete. We also observe that in spite of such restriction, several useful set…
Metric Temporal Logic (MTL) and Timed Propositional Temporal Logic (TPTL) are prominent real-time extensions of Linear Temporal Logic (LTL). In general, the satisfiability checking problem for these extensions is undecidable when both the future U and the past S modalities are used. In a classical result, the satisfiability checking for MITL[U,S], a non punctual fragment of MTL[U,S], is shown to be decidable with EXPSPACE complete complexity. Given that this notion of non punctuality does not recover decidability in the case of TPTL[U,S], we propose a generalization of non punctuality called \…
We investigate quantifier alternation hierarchies in first-order logic on finite words. Levels in these hierarchies are defined by counting the number of quantifier alternations in formulas. We prove that one can decide membership of a regular language in the levels $\mathcal{B}Σ_2$ (finite boolean combinations of formulas having only one alternation) and $Σ_3$ (formulas having only two alternations and beginning with an existential block). Our proofs work by considering a deeper problem, called separation, which, once solved for lower levels, allows us to solve membership for higher levels.
We study counting propositional logic as an extension of propositional logic with counting quantifiers. We prove that the complexity of the underlying decision problem perfectly matches the appropriate level of Wagner's counting hierarchy, but also that the resulting logic admits a satisfactory proof-theoretical treatment. From the latter, a type system for a probabilistic lambda-calculus is derived in the spirit of the Curry-Howard correspondence, showing the potential of counting propositional logic as a useful tool in several fields of theoretical computer science.
We study the expressive power of fragments of inclusion logic under the so-called lax team semantics. The fragments are defined either by restricting the number of universal quantifiers or the arity of inclusion atoms in formulae. In case of universal quantifiers, the corresponding hierarchy collapses at the first level. Arity hierarchy is shown to be strict by relating the question to the study of arity hierarchies in fixed point logics.
We identify a fragment of Presburger arithmetic enriched with free function symbols and cardinality constraints for interpreted sets, which is amenable to automated analysis. We establish decidability and complexity results for such a fragment and we implement our algorithms. The experiments run in discharging proof obligations coming from invariant checking and bounded model-checking benchmarks show the practical feasibility of our decision procedure.

Weighted First-Order Model Counting (WFOMC) computes the weighted sum of the models of a first-order theory on a given finite domain. WFOMC has emerged as a fundamental tool for probabilistic inference. Algorithms for WFOMC that run in polynomial time w.r.t. the domain size are called lifted inference algorithms. Such algorithms have been developed for multiple extensions of FO2(the fragment of first-order logic with two variables) for the special case of symmetric weight functions. We introduce the concept of lifted interpretations as a tool for formulating polynomials for WFOMC. Using lifted…
A data word is a sequence of pairs of a letter from a finite alphabet and an element from an infinite set, where the latter can only be compared for equality. To reason about data words, linear temporal logic is extended by the freeze quantifier, which stores the element at the current word position into a register, for equality comparisons deeper in the formula. By translations from the logic to alternating automata with registers and then to faulty counter automata whose counters may erroneously increase at any time, and from faulty and error-free counter automata to the logic, we obtain a c…
Recently, the separated fragment (SF) has been introduced and proved to be decidable. Its defining principle is that universally and existentially quantified variables may not occur together in atoms. The known upper bound on the time required to decide SF's satisfiability problem is formulated in terms of quantifier alternations: Given an SF sentence $\exists \vec{z} \forall \vec{x}_1 \exists \vec{y}_1 \ldots \forall \vec{x}_n \exists \vec{y}_n . ψ$ in which $ψ$ is quantifier free, satisfiability can be decided in nondeterministic $n$-fold exponential time. In the present paper, we conduct a …
We introduce a new decidable fragment of first-order logic with equality, which strictly generalizes two already well-known ones -- the Bernays-Schönfinkel-Ramsey (BSR) Fragment and the Monadic Fragment. The defining principle is the syntactic separation of universally quantified variables from existentially quantified ones at the level of atoms. Thus, our classification neither rests on restrictions on quantifier prefixes (as in the BSR case) nor on restrictions on the arity of predicate symbols (as in the monadic case). We demonstrate that the new fragment exhibits the finite model property …
We study the computational complexity of short sentences in Presburger arithmetic (Short-PA). Here by "short" we mean sentences with a bounded number of variables, quantifiers, inequalities and Boolean operations; the input consists only of the integer coefficients involved in the linear inequalities. We prove that satisfiability of Short-PA sentences with $m+2$ alternating quantifiers is $Σ_{P}^m$-complete or $Π_{P}^m$-complete, when the first quantifier is $\exists$ or $\forall$, respectively. Counting versions and restricted systems are also analyzed. Further application are given to hardne…
We show that the satisfiability problem for the quantifier-free theory of product structures with the equicardinality relation is in NP. As an application, we extend the combinatory array logic fragment to handle cardinality constraints. The resulting fragment is independent of the base element and index set theories.

We consider the task of weighted first-order model counting (WFOMC) used for probabilistic inference in the area of statistical relational learning. Given a formula $ϕ$, domain size $n$ and a pair of weight functions, what is the weighted sum of all models of $ϕ$ over a domain of size $n$? It was shown that computing WFOMC of any logical sentence with at most two logical variables can be done in time polynomial in $n$. However, it was also shown that the task is $\texttt{#}P_1$-complete once we add the third variable, which inspired the search for extensions of the two-variable fragment that w…
The standard reasoning problem, concept satisfiability, in the basic description logic ALC is PSPACE-complete, and it is EXPTIME-complete in the presence of unrestricted axioms. Several fragments of ALC, notably logics in the FL, EL, and DL-Lite families, have an easier satisfiability problem; sometimes it is even tractable. We classify the complexity of the standard satisfiability problems for all possible Boolean and quantifier fragments of ALC in the presence of general axioms.
