At tree-level Higgs production in association with a b-quark pair proceeds through the small Yukawa bottom coupling in the Standard Model. Even in the limit where this coupling vanishes, electroweak one-loop effects, through the top-Higgs Yukawa coupling in particular, can still trigger this reaction. This contribution is small for Higgs masses around 120GeV but it quickly picks up for higher Higgs masses especially because the one-loop amplitude develops a leading Landau singularity and new thresholds open up. These effects can be viewed as the production of a pair of top quarks which rescatter to give rise to Higgs production through WW fusion. We study the leading Landau singularity in detail. Since this singularity is not integrable when the one-loop amplitude is squared, we regulate the cross section by taking into account the width of the internal top and W particles. This requires that we extend the usual box one-loop function to the case of imaginary masses. We show how this can be implemented analytically in our case. We study in some detail the cross section at the LHC as a function of the Higgs mass and show how some distributions can be drastically affected compared to the tree-level result.
We calculate the leading electroweak (EW) corrections to the important process of Higgs production associated with two bottom quarks at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Our study is restricted to the Standard Model (SM). At tree-level Higgs production in association with a b-quark pair proceeds through the small Yukawa bottom coupling in the Standard Model. Even in the limit where this coupling vanishes, EW one-loop effects, through the top-Higgs Yukawa coupling in particular, can still trigger this reaction. This contribution is small for Higgs masses around 120GeV but it quickly picks u…
The effective string action of the color-electric flux tube in the dual Ginzburg-Landau (DGL) theory is studied by performing a path-integral analysis by taking into account the finite thickness of the flux tube. A modified Yukawa interaction appears as a boundary contribution and is reduced into the ordinary Yukawa interaction in the London Limit.
In the dispersive approach of Dokshitzer, Marchesini and Webber, standard power-behaved contributions of infrared origin are described with the notion of an infrared regular QCD coupling. I argue that their framework suggests the existence of non-standard contributions, arising from short distances (hence unrelated to renormalons and the operator product expansion), which appear in the process of removing the Landau singularity of the perturbative coupling. A natural definition of an infrared finite perturbative coupling is suggested within the dispersive method. Implications for the tau hadro…
The candidate of minimal dark matter (MDM) is limited if one demands perturbativity up to a very high scale, and it was believed that the MDM model with a real scalar septuplet could keep perturbative up to the Planck or GUT scale. In this work we point out that it is not true after taking into account the running of the quartic self-couplings of the scalar septuplet. For the septuplet mass around $10$ TeV, which is suggested by the observed dark matter relic abundance, these couplings would hit the Landau pole at a scale $\sim 10^8-10^9$ GeV, much lower than the Planck scale. We attempt to pu…
Standard power-behaved contributions in QCD arising from non-perturbative effects at low scale can be described, as shown by Dokshitzer, Marchesini and Webber, with the notion of an infrared regular effective coupling. In their approach, a non-perturbative contribution to the coupling, essentially restricted to low scales, parametrizes the non-perturbative power corrections. I argue that their framework naturally allows for another type of power contributions, arising from short distances (hence unrelated to renormalons and the operator product expansion) which appear in the process of removin…
We confront the perturbativity problem in the real scalar quintuplet minimal dark matter model. In the original model, the quintuplet quartic self-coupling inevitably hits a Landau pole at a scale $\sim 10^{14}$ GeV, far below the Planck scale. In order to push up this Landau pole scale, we extend the model with a fermionic quintuplet and three fermionic singlets which couple to the scalar quintuplet via Yukawa interactions. Involving such Yukawa interactions at a scale $\sim 10^{10}$ GeV can not only keep all couplings perturbative up to the Planck scale, but can also explain the smallness of…
We analysis the constraints of the general two Higgs doublet models via evolving the Yukawa coupling constants to high energy under renormalization group. We consider the appearance of a Landau pole or large off-diagonal Yukawa couplings which cause tree level flavour changing neutral currents. Our study shows the latter condition can be used to answer that how much $Z_2$ symmetry breaking can be allowed in a given 2HDM model.
We investigate one-loop renormalization group evolutions of extended sectors of Yukawa type couplings. It is shown that Landau Poles which usually provide necessary low energy upper bounds that saturate quickly with increasing initial value conditions, lead in some cases to the opposite behaviour: some of the low energy couplings decrease and become vanishingly small for increasingly large initial conditions. We write down the general criteria for this to happen in typical situations, highlighting a concept of {\sl repulsive} quasi-fixed points, and illustrate the case both within a two-Yukawa…
We study how general two Higgs doublet models can be constrained by considering their properties under renormalization group evolution of the Yukawa couplings. We take into account both the appearance of a Landau pole as well as off-diagonal Yukawa couplings leading to flavour changing neutral currents in violation with experimental constraints at the electroweak scale. We find that the latter condition can be used to limit the amount of Z2 symmetry breaking allowed in a given model.
We investigate the leading one-loop Yukawa corrections to the process pp-> b anti-b H in the Standard Model. We find that the next-to-leading order correction to the cross section is small about -4% if the Higgs mass is 120GeV. However, the appearance of leading Landau singularity when $M_H > 2M_W$ can lead to a large correction at the next-to-next-to-leading order level for a Higgs mass around 160GeV.
The non-equilibrium dynamics of a Yukawa theory with N fermions coupled to a scalar field is studied in the large N limit with the goal of comparing the dynamics predicted from the renormalization group improved effective potential to that obtained including the fermionic backreaction. The effective potential is of the Coleman-Weinberg type. Its renormalization group improvement is unbounded from below and features a Landau pole. When viewed self-consistently, the initial time singularity does not arise. The different regimes of the dynamics of the fully renormalized theory are studied both an…
A system of Schwinger-Dyson equations for pseudoscalar four-dimensional Yukawa model in the two-particle approximation is investigated. The simplest iterative solution of the system corresponds to the mean-field approximation (or, equivalently, to the leading order of 1/N-expansion) and includes a non-physical Landau pole in deep-Euclidean region for the pseudoscalar propagator $Δ$. It is argued, however, that a full solution may be free from non-physical singularities and has the self-consistent asymptotic behavior $p^2_eΔ\simeq C\,\log^{-4/5}\frac{p^2_e}{M^2}$. An approximate solution confir…
F-theory is one of frameworks in string theory where supersymmetric grand unification is accommodated, and all the Yukawa couplings and Majorana masses of right-handed neutrinos are generated. Yukawa couplings of charged fermions are generated at codimension-3 singularities, and a contribution from a given singularity point is known to be approximately rank 1. Thus, the approximate rank of Yukawa matrices in low-energy effective theory of generic F-theory compactifications are minimum of either the number of generations N_gen = 3 or the number of singularity points of certain types. If there i…
F-theory SU(5) unification has been proposed as a scenario where the mass of the top quark is naturally large, as opposed to type II SU(5) models. We analyze this claim from the viewpoint of local SU(5) F-theory models, by explicitly computing the 10 x 10 x 5 Yukawa couplings that are developed in the vicinity of an E6 singularity. Realizing this singularity via T-branes allows for a non-trivial mass for the top quark, while lighter generations of up-type quarks still have vanishing Yukawa couplings. Nevertheless, we show that by taking instanton effects into account non-vanishing Yukawas are …
Quantum Eletrodynamics (QED) is considered as the most successful of all physical theories. It can predict numerical values of physical quantities to a spectacular degree of accuracy. However, from the very early days it has been known that, in QED, there are two important problems which are linked with the very foundation of the theory. In 1952, Dyson put forward strong argumnts to suggest that the perturbation seires in quantum electrodynamics can not be convergent. Just three years latter, in 1955, Landau argued that the effective running coupling constant in QED has a pole (Landau singular…
We show that loop-induced processes involving new physics particles can readily satisfy Landau Equation and trigger triangular singularities at high energy colliders, leading to fully visible Standard Model final states. Four-particle vertices in new physics allow triangular singularity diagrams to evade large virtuality suppression. In addition, a $t$-channel triangular singularity can also occur in particle scattering processes that may extend to low momentum exchange. We discuss several typical scenarios in supersymmetric and extended Higgs models, then identify the singular component in th…
The severe constraints imposed on the parameter space of the minimal split supersymmetry model by the infrared fixed point solution of the top Yukawa coupling $Y_t$ are studied in detail in terms of the value of the top quark mass measured at the Tevatron together with the lower bound on the lightest Higgs mass established by LEP. The sensitive dependence of the higgsino mass parameter $μ$ and of the gaugino coupling strengths ${\tilde g}_{u,d}$, ${\tilde g}^\prime_{u,d}$ on the value of $Y_t$ in the vicinity of the Landau pole is a remarkable consequence. A few other interesting features emer…
We investigate the constraints on the leptoquark Yukawa couplings and Higgs-leptoquark quartic couplings for scalar doublet leptoquark $\tilde{R}_2$, scalar triplet leptoquark $\vec S_3$ and their combination with both three generations and one generation from perturbative unitarity and vacuum stability. Perturbative unitarity of all the dimensionless couplings have been studied via one- and two-loop beta-functions. Introduction of new $SU(2)$ multiplets in terms of these leptoquarks fabricate Landau poles at two-loop level in the gauge coupling $g_2$ at $10^{19.7}$ GeV and $10^{14.4}$ GeV, re…
Consistency of trans-unification RG evolution is used to discuss the domain of definition of the New Minimal Supersymmetric SO(10) GUT (NMSGUT). We compute the 1-loop RGE $β$ functions, simplifying generic formulae using constraints of gauge invariance and superpotential structure. We also calculate the 2 loop contributions to the gauge coupling and gaugino mass and indicate how to get full 2 loop results for all couplings. Our method overcomes combinatorial barriers that frustrate computer algebra based attempts to calculate SO(10) $β$ functions involving large irreps. Use of the RGEs identif…
We study the gluon propagator in the Landau gauge in SU(3) lattice QCD at $β$=5.7, 5.8 and 6.0 at the quenched level. The Euclidean Landau-gauge gluon propagator $D(r)\equiv D_{μμ}^{aa}(x)/24$ is found to be well described by four-dimensional Yukawa-type function $e^{-mr}/r$ in the infrared and intermediate region of $r \equiv (x_μx_μ)^{1/2}$ = 0.1 $\sim$ 1.0fm. The infrared effective gluon mass is obtained as $m \simeq$ 600MeV. Associated with the 4D Yukawa-type gluon propagator, we derive analytical expressions for the zero-spatial-momentum propagator $D_0(t)$, the effective mass $M_{\rm eff…
In order to relax the Landau pole constraint on "λ", which is a coupling constant between a singlet S and the MSSM Higgs, λSh_uh_d in the next-to-MSSM (NMSSM), and also maintain the gauge coupling unification, we consider U(1) gauge extensions of the NMSSM. For relatively strong U(1) gauge interactions down to low energies, we assign U(1) charges only to the Higgs and the third family of the chiral matter among the MSSM superfields. In the U(1)_Z [U(1)_Z\times U(1)_X] extension, the low energy value of λcan be lifted up to 0.85-0.95 [0.9-1.0], depending on the employed charge normalizations, w…
In this article we propose a new strategy to address the Little Hierarchy problem. We show that the addition of a fourth generation with vector-like quarks to the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) can raise the predicted value of the physical Higgs mass by mixing with the top sector. The mixing requires a larger top quark Yukawa coupling (by up to $\sim 6 %$) to produce the same top mass. Since loop corrections to $m_h$ go as $y_{top}^4$, this will in turn increase the predicted value of the physical Higgs mass, a point not previously emphasized in the literature. In the presence of…

We present a detailed study of the double parton scattering (DPS) singularity, which is a specific type of Landau singularity that can occur in certain one-loop graphs in theories with massless particles. A simple formula for the DPS singular part of a four-point diagram with arbitrary internal/external particles is derived in terms of the transverse momentum integral of a product of light cone wavefunctions with tree-level matrix elements. This is used to reproduce and explain some results for DPS singularities in box integrals that have been obtained using traditional loop integration techni…
There is a widespread belief that the general two-Higgs-doublet model (G2HDM) behaves unnaturally with respect to evolution of the flavor-changing neutral Yukawa coupling parameters (FCNYCP's) -- i.e., that the latter, although being suppressed at low energies of probes, in general increase by a large factor as the energy of probes increases. We investigate this, by evolving Yukawa parameters by one-loop renormalization group equations (RGE's) and neglecting contributions of the first quark generation. For patterns of FCNYCP suppression at low energies suggested by the existing quark mass hier…
Our understanding of quantum gravity suggests that at the Planck scale the usual geometry loses its meaning. If so, the quest for grand unification in a large non-abelian group naturally endowed with the property of asymptotic freedom may also lose its motivation. Instead we propose an unification of all fundamental interactions at the Planck scale in the form of a Universal Landau Pole (ULP), at which all gauge couplings diverge. The Higgs quartic coupling also diverges while the Yukawa couplings vanish. The unification is achieved with the addition of fermions with vector gauge couplings com…
We consider multi-Higgs-doublet models which, for symmetry reasons, have a universal Higgs-Yukawa (HY) coupling, $g$. This is identified with the top quark $g=g_t\approx 1$. The models are concordant with the quasi-infrared fixed point, and the top quark mass is correctly predicted with a compositeness scale (Landau pole) at $M_{planck}$, with sensitivity to heavier Higgs states. The observed Higgs boson is a $\bar{t}t$ composite, and a first sequential Higgs doublet, $H_b$, with $g\approx g_t\approx 1$ coupled to $\bar{b}_R(t,b)_L$ is predicted at a mass $3.0 \lesssim M_b \lesssim 5.5$ TeV an…
A sequence of $n$-particle approximations for the system of Schwinger-Dyson equations is investigated in the model of a complex scalar field $ϕ$ and a real scalar field $χ$ with the interaction $gϕ^*ϕχ$. In the first non-trivial two-particle approximation, the system is reduced to a system of two nonlinear integral equations for propagators. The study of this system shows that for equal masses a critical coupling constant $g^2_c$ exists, which separates the weak- and strong-coupling regions with the different asymptotic behavior for deep Euclidean momenta. In the weak-coupling region ($g^2<g^2…
We study the equilibration of right-handed electrons in the symmetric phase of the Standard Model. Due to the smallness of the electron Yukawa coupling, it happens relatively late in the history of the Universe. We compute the equilibration rate at leading order in the Standard Model couplings, by including gauge interactions, the top Yukawa- and the Higgs self-interaction. The dominant contribution is due to $ 2 \to 2 $ particle scattering, even though the rate of (inverse) Higgs decays is strongly enhanced by multiple soft scattering which is included by Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) resum…
We investigate textbook QED in the framework of the exact renormalization group. In the strong-coupling region, we study the influence of fluctuation-induced photonic and fermionic self-interactions on the nonperturbative running of the gauge coupling. Our findings confirm the triviality hypothesis of complete charge screening if the ultraviolet cutoff is sent to infinity. Though the Landau pole does not belong to the physical coupling domain owing to spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking (chiSB), the theory predicts a scale of maximal UV extension of the same order as the Landau pole scale. In…
In scalar field theories the Landau pole is an ultraviolet singularity in the running coupling constant that indicates a mass scale at which the theory breaks down and new physics must intervene. However, new physics at the pole will in general affect the running of the low energy coupling constant, which will in turn affect the location of the pole and the related upper limit (``triviality'' bound) on the low energy coupling constant. If the new physics is strongly coupled to the scalar fields these effects can be significant even though they are power suppressed. We explore the possible rang…
Motivated by potential phenomenological applications, we develop the necessary tools for building GUT models in F-theory. This approach is quite flexible because the local geometrical properties of singularities in F-theory compactifications encode the physical content of the theory. In particular, we show how geometry determines the gauge group, matter content and Yukawa couplings of a given model. It turns out that these features are beautifully captured by a four-dimensional topologically twisted N=4 theory which has been coupled to a surface defect theory on which chiral matter can propaga…
