We investigate the third-order density perturbation and the one-loop correction to the linear power spectrum in the dark-energy cosmological model. Our main interest is to understand the dark-energy effect on baryon acoustic oscillations in a quasi-nonlinear regime ($k \approx 0.1h$/Mpc). Analytical solutions and simple fitting formulae are presented for the dark-energy model with the general time-varying equation of state $w(a)$. It turns out that the power spectrum coincides with the approximate result based on the EdS (Einstein de-Sitter) model within 1% for $k<0.4h/$Mpc at $z=0$ in the WMAP (Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe) 5yr best-fitting cosmological model, which suggests that the cosmological dependence is very small.
The mass power spectrum for a Universe dominated by the Chaplygin gas is evaluated numerically from scales of the order of the Hubble horizon to 100 Mpc. The results are compared with a pure baryonic Universe and a cosmological constant model. In all three cases, the spectrum increases with k, the wavenumber of the perturbations. The slope of the spectrum is higher for the baryonic model and smaller for the cosmological constant model, the Chaplygin gas interpolating these two models. The results are analyzed in terms of the sound velocity of the Chaplygin gas and the moment the Universe begin…
We study the conditions required for validity of the generalized second law in phantom dominated universe in the presence of Schwarzschild black hole. Our study is independent of the origin of the phantom like behavior of the considered universe. We also discuss the generalized second law in the neighborhood of transition (from quintessence to phantom regime) time. We show that even for a constant equation of state parameter the generalized second law may be satisfied provided the temperature is not taken as de Sitter temperature. It is shown that in models with (only) a transition from quinte…
We demonstrate that in a vacuum-energy-dominated expansion phase, surprisingly neither the decay of matter nor matter-antimatter annihilation into relativistic particles can ever cause radiation to once again dominate over matter in the future history of the universe.
The string-dominated universe locally resembles an open universe, and fits dynamical measures of power spectra, cluster abundances, redshift distortions, lensing constraints, luminosity and angular diameter distance relations and microwave background observations. We show examples of networks which might give rise to recent string-domination without requiring any fine-tuned parameters. We discuss how future observations can distinguish this model from other cosmologies.
In this paper we show that a universe dominated by two components, namely domain walls and dissipative dark matter such that the former slowly decays into the latter may drive power law cosmological acceleration consistent with the high redshift supernovae data, while the ratio between the energy densities of both components remains fixed at late times thus solving the coincidence problem of present acceleration. Likewise, we estimate the aforesaid ratio at early times.
This Letter considers the generalized second law of gravitational thermodynamics in two scenarios featuring a phantom dominated expansion plus a black hole. The law is violated in both scenarios.
The transition from acoustic noise in the radiation-dominated universe to the density structures in the matter dominated epoch is considered. The initial state is a stochastic field of sound waves moving in different directions. The construction of the initial state is compatible with the hyperbolic type of propagation equation for density perturbations, and parallel to the theory of stochastic background of gravitational waves. Instantaneous transition between the cosmological epochs is assumed, and Darmois-Israel joining conditions are applied to match solutions for sound waves with growing …
The most recent cosmological observations indicate that the present universe is flat and vacuum dominated. In such a universe, the distance measurements are always difficult and involve numerical computations. In this paper, it is shown that the most fundamental distance measurement of cosmology, the luminosity distance, for such a universe can be obtained in an approximate analytical way with very small errors of less than 0.02% up to %z = 5$ for any value of vacuum energy. The analytical calculation is shown to be exceedingly efficient, as compared to the traditional numerical methods.
In this paper we investigate the epochs in which the Universe started accelerating and when it began to become dark energy-dominated (i.e., the dynamics of the expansion of the Universe dominated by the dark energy). We provide analytic expressions to calculate the redshifts of these epochs as a function of density parameters. Moreover, we review and discuss cosmological models with a dark energy component, which can have an interesting characteristic, namely, they never stop accelerating. This holds even if the Universe is at present time either flat, open, or closed. If the dark energy is th…
Recently, there has been suggestions that the apparent accelerated expansion of the universe is due not to a cosmological constant, but rather to inhomogeneities in the distribution of matter. In this work, we investigate a specific class of inhomogeneous models that can be solved analytically, namely the dust-dominated Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi universe models. We show that they do not permit accelerated cosmic expansion.
We find the solution for the scale factor in a flat Universe driven by dust plus a component characterized by a constant parameter of state which dominates in the asymptotic future. We also present an analytic formula (in terms of hypergeometric functions) for the past light cone in such a universe. As applications of this result, we give analytic expressions for the Luminosity Distance and for the Acoustic Scale, where the latter determines the peaks positions in the pattern of CMB anisotropies.
The evolution equation of cosmic density perturbation of a spin dominated universe in Einstein-Cartan gravity is obtained.Examples of inflationary cosmologies with spin are also given where we compute the density perturbations in terms of redshift and show that spin-torsion effects produce a growth on the inhomogeneity of the universe as the redshift is high.Spin-torsion effects are redshifted out when the Universe expands and would be rarely of importance in present day phase of the universe.Comparison with the primordial density fluctuation of COBE data is also obtained. From our computations…
We study the existence of black holes in a homogeneous and isotropic expanding Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe dominated by dark energy. We show that black holes can exist in such a universe by considering some specific McVittie solutions. Although these solutions violate all three energy conditions, the FRW background does satisfy the weak energy condition.
We investigate the fate of particle production in an expanding universe dominated by a perfect fluid with equation of state $p = αρ$. The rate of particle production, using the Bogolioubov coefficients, are determined exactly for any value of $α$ in the case of a flat universe. When the strong energy condition is satisfied, the rate of particle production decreases as time goes on, in agreement to the fact that the four-dimensional curvature decreases with the expansion; the opposite occurs when the strong energy condition is violated. In the phantomic case, the rate of particle production div…
The generalized second law of gravitational thermodynamics is examined in scenarios where the dark energy dominates the cosmic expansion. For quintessence and phantom fields this law is fulfilled but it may fail when the dark energy is in the form of a Chaplygin gas. However, if a black hole is allowed in the picture, the law can be violated if the field is of phantom type.
A modification to the Friedmann Robertson Walker equation is proposed in which the universe is flat, matter dominated, and accelerating. An additional term, which contains only matter or radiation (no vacuum contribution), becomes the dominant driver of expansion at a late epoch of the universe. During the epoch when the new term dominates, the universe accelerates; we call this period of acceleration the Cardassian era. The universe can be flat and yet consist of only matter and radiation, and still be compatible with observations. The energy density required to close the universe is much sma…
We evolve the network of global strings in the matter-dominated universe by means of numerical simulations. The existence of the scaling solution is confirmed as in the radiation-dominated universe but the scaling parameter $ξ$ takes a slightly smaller value, $ξ\simeq 0.6 \pm 0.1$, which is defined as $ξ= ρ_{s} t^{2} / μ$ with $ρ_{s}$ the energy density of global strings and $μ$ the string tension per unit length. The change of $ξ$ from the radiation to the matter-dominated universe is consistent with that obtained by Albrecht and Turok by use of the one-scale model. We also study the loop dis…
We study second order gravitational effects of local inhomogeneities on the cosmic microwave background radiation in flat universes with matter and a cosmological constant $Λ$. We find that the general relativistic correction to the Newtonian approximation is negligible at second order provided that the size of the inhomogeneous region is sufficiently smaller than the horizon scale. For a spherically symmetric top-hat type quasi-linear perturbation, the first order temperature fluctuation corresponding to the linear integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect is enhanced(suppressed) by the second orde…
Using a single dilaton field, a unified model of the Universe is proposed, which evolves from the radiation-like dominance in the Big Bang, to the dark-matter-like dominance in the early Universe, to the coexistence of both dark-matter-like and dark energy today, and finally to the dark energy dominance in the infinite future. This model is consistent with current results on the age of the Universe, the transition redshift from deceleration to acceleration, BBN and evolution of dark energy. Future higher quality data may constrain the cosmic evolution of dark matter, dark energy and Hubble con…
The integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect in a Lambda dominated universe can be an important factor in the evolution of cosmic microwave background fluctuations. With the inclusion of cosmological constant we present the complete analytic solution of the covariant linear perturbations of the Einstein equations in the Newtonian gauge, in the case of a spatially flat (K=0), Friedman-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe, filled with pressureless ideal fluid. We use the analytic time dependence of the perturbation potentials to derive the anisotropy power spectrum of the late ISW effect. We choose the sc…
We consider a cosmogony with a dark matter component consisting of a network of frustrated domain walls. Such a network provides a solid dark matter component with $p=-(2/3)ρ$ that remains unclustered on small scales and with $Ω_{\rm dw}\approx 0.7$ can reconcile a spatially flat universe with the many observations indicating $Ω_{\rm m}\approx 0.3.$ Because of its large negative pressure, this component can explain the recent observations indicating an accelerating universe without recourse to a non-vanishing cosmological constant. We explore the viability of this proposal and prospects for di…
We calculate the evolution of a low-mass ($M \le 10^5 M_{\odot}$) spherically symmetric density perturbation in the $Ω_b h^2=0.02$, $Ω_M =0.35$, $Ω_Λ=0.65$, $h=0.72$ Universe. The results are compared with the ones that assume no cosmological constant and the flat, dark matter dominated Universe. We include thermal processes and non-equilibrium chemical evolution of the collapsing gas. We find that direct formation of bound objects with such masses by $z=8$ is unlikely so in fact they may form only through fragmentation of greater objects. This is in stark contrast to the $Ω=1$ pure CDM cosmol…
We develop the general scheme for modified $f(R)$ gravity reconstruction from any realistic FRW cosmology. We formulate several versions of modified gravity compatible with Solar System tests where the following sequence of cosmological epochs occurs: a. matter dominated phase (with or without usual matter), transition from decceleration to acceleration, accelerating epoch consistent with recent WMAP data b. $Λ$CDM cosmology without cosmological constant. As a rule, such modified gravities are expressed implicitly (in terms of special functions) with late-time asymptotics of known type (for in…
It is well known that the $Λ$-term is a very good candidate for the smooth component of the universe since it resolves the so-called ``$Ω$-problem'' giving, at the same time, sufficiently large age of the universe. However, the constant $Λ$-term is not the only possibility. Some people consider the $Λ$-term varying in time according to the law $Λ\approx R^{-2}$. Moreover the global texture in a closed universe and the network of cosmic strings obeying the same law of variation ($ρ\approx R^{-2}$) seem to be good candidates as well. We call the ``exotic'' form of matter scaling according to thi…
We present a rich class of exact solutions which contains radiation-dominated and matter-dominated models for the early and late universe. They include a variable cosmological ``constant'' which is derived from a higher dimension and manifests itself in spacetime as an energy density for the vacuum. This is in agreement with observational data and is compatible with extensions of general relativity to string and membrane theory. Our solutions are also typified by a non-singular ``big bounce'' (as opposed to a singular big bang), where matter is created as in inflationary cosmology.
We discuss the evolution of U(1) symmetric scalar field at the inflation epoch with a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone tilt revealing after the end of exponential expansion of the Universe. The U(1) symmetry is supposed to be associated with baryon charge. It is shown that quantum fluctuations lead in natural way to baryon dominated Universe with antibaryon excess regions. The range of parameters is calculated at which the fraction of Universe occupied by antimatter and the size of antimatter regions satisfy the observational constraints, survive to the modern time and lead to effects, accessible to exp…
We develop the general program of the unification of matter-dominated era with acceleration epoch for scalar-tensor theory or dark fluid. The general reconstruction of single scalar-tensor theory is fulfilled. The explicit form of scalar potential for which the theory admits matter-dominated era, transition to acceleration and (asymptotically deSitter) acceleration epoch consistent with WMAP data is found. The interrelation of the epochs of deceleration-acceleration transition and matter dominance-dark energy transition for dark fluids with general EOS is investigated. We give several examples…
In this paper, by analyzing the instability against spatially homogeneous and anisotropic perturbations of the Kantowski-Sachs-type during different cosmological epoch, we show that it is a theoretical consequence of the general relativity that the KS universe must be open or flat if it underwent the matter dominated and/or radiation dominated era in its past evolution, which theoretically confirms the flatness of our observable universe.
We discuss second-order cosmological perturbations on super-Hubble scales, in a scalar field dominated universe, such as during single field inflation. In this contest we show that the gauge-invariant curvature perturbations defined on uniform density and comoving hypersurfaces coincide and that perturbations are adiabatic in the large scale limit. Since it has been recently shown that the uniform density curvature perturbation is conserved on large scales if perturbations are adiabatic, we conclude that both the uniform density and comoving curvature perturbations at second-order, in a scalar…
The holographic solution is a new exact solution to the Einstein field equations. It describes a compact self-gravitating object with properties similar to a black hole. Its entropy and temperature at infinity are proportional to the Hawking result. Instead of an event horizon, the holographic solution has a real spherical boundary membrane, situated roughly two Planck distances outside of the object's gravitational radius. The interior matter-state is singularity free. It consists out of string type matter, which is densely packed. Each string has a transverse extension of exactly one Planck …
We present a new scenario for the development of the Universe after the Big Bang, built on the conjecture that a vast majority of the primordial quark matter did not undergo a phase transition to normal nuclear matter, but rather split up into massive quark objects that remained stable. Hence, such primordial quark matter would make up the so-called dark matter. We discuss, mostly in qualitative terms, the consequences for galaxy formation, the origin of normal matter, the occurrence of massive black-holes in galactic centres and the cosmic gamma-ray bursts.
Most physical properties derived for quasars, as single entities or as a population, depend upon the cosmology assumed. In this paper, we calculate the quasar luminosity function and some related quantities for a flat universe dominated by a cosmological constant $Λ$ ($Λ=0.9, Ω=0.1$) and compare them with those deduced for a flat universe with zero cosmological constant ($Λ=0,Ω=1$). We use the AAT quasar survey data (Boyle et al. 1990) as input in both cases. The data are fit well by a pure luminosity evolution model for both the cosmologies, but with different evolutionary parameters. From th…
The most distinctive feature of the primordial density inhomogeneities that existed in the cosmic plasma at the instant of decoupling is their scale invariant power spectrum ${\cal P}(k) \sim k$ over the range $k \ll H_{eq}$ of modes with cosmologically large comoving wavelength. We characterize this feature in real space, in terms of their correlation function at two points. We show that over cosmologically large comoving distances $r \gg H^{-1}_{eq}$ the primordial inhomogeneities were (anti)correlated as $f(r) \sim - r^{-4}$. We revisit the so-called {\it origin of structures problem} of th…
We simulate the future evolution of the observed inhomogeneities in the local universe assuming that the global expansion rate is dominated by a cosmological constant. We find that within two Hubble times (~ 30 billion years) from the present epoch, large-scale structures will freeze in comoving coordinates and the mass distribution of bound objects will stop evolving. The Local Group will get somewhat closer to the Virgo cluster in comoving coordinates, but will be pulled away from the Virgo in physical coordinates due to the accelerated expansion of the Universe. In the distant future there …
New estimates of globular cluster distances, combined with revised ranges for input parameters in stellar evolution codes and recent estimates of the earliest redshift of cluster formation allow us to derive a new 95% confidence level lower limit on the age of the Universe of 11 Gyr. This is now definitively inconsistent with the expansion age for a flat Universe for the currently allowed range of the Hubble constant unless the cosmic equation of state is dominated by a component that violates the strong energy condition. This solidifies the case for a dark energy-dominated universe, complemen…
Wolfgang Priester was one of Germany's most versatile and quixotic astrophysicists, re-inventing himself successively as a radio astronomer, space physicist and cosmologist, and making a lasting impact on each field. We focus in this personal account on his contributions to cosmology, where he will be most remembered for his association with quasars, his promotion of the idea of a nonsingular "big bounce" at the beginning of the current expansionary phase, and his recognition of the importance of dark energy (Einstein's cosmological constant Lambda) well before this became the standard paradig…
We examine the generation and evolution of perturbations in a universe dominated by a fluid with stiff equation of state $p=ρ$. The recently proposed Holographic Universe is an example of such a model. We compute the spectrum of scalar and tensor perturbations, without relying on a microphysical description of the $p=ρ$ fluid. The spectrum is scale invariant deep inside the Hubble horizon. In contrast, infrared perturbations that enter the Hubble horizon during the stiff fluid dominated (holographic) phase yield oscillatory and logarithmic terms in the power spectrum. We show that vector pertu…
We investigate reheating of the universe by early formation of stars and quasars in the hierarchical clustering scheme of cold dark matter scenario, with perturbation fluctuations normalized by the COBE data. It is found that ionizing uv flux from OB stars with the abundance given by the standard initial mass function is strong enough to ionize the universe from $z\approx 30$ to the present epoch, if 1--2\% of the collapsed baryons go into stars. This lessens significantly the CMB anisotropies at a small angular scale. Reionization also increases the Jeans mass to $M_{\rm luminous}\approx 10^9…
Galaxy-galaxy lensing (GGL) measures the 2-point cross-correlation between galaxies and mass in the Universe. In this work we seek to generalise this effect by considering the third-order correlations between galaxies and mass: galaxy-galaxy-galaxy lensing. Third-order correlations in the cosmic shear field have recently been reported in the VIRMOS-DESCART and CTIO surveys. Such data should also be ideal for measuring galaxy-galaxy-galaxy lensing. Indeed, the effects of these higher-order correlations may have already been detected in recent studies of galaxy-galaxy lensing. In this paper we l…
We investigate the evolution of the global string network in the radiation dominated universe by use of numerical simulations in 3+1 dimensions. We find that the global string network settles down to the scaling regime where the energy density of global strings, $ρ_{s}$, is given by $ρ_{s} = ξμ/ t^2$ with $μ$ the string tension per unit length and the scaling parameter, $ξ\sim (0.9-1.3)$, irrespective of the cosmic time. We also find that the loop distribution function can be fitted with that predicted by the so-called one scale model. Concretely, the number density, $n_{l}(t)$, of the loop wi…
The Cardassian universe is a proposed modification to the Friedmann Robertson Walker (FRW) equation in which the universe is flat, matter dominated, and accelerating. Here we generalize the original Cardassian proposal to include additional variants on the FRW equation. Specific examples are presented. In the ordinary FRW equation, the right hand side is a linear function of the energy density, $H^2 \sim ρ$. Here, instead, the right hand side of the FRW equation is a different function of the energy density, $H^2 \sim g(ρ)$. This function returns to ordinary FRW at early times, but modifies th…
We present a model to investigate the formation and evolution of cluster galaxies using cosmological N-body simulations. The N-body simulations are used to make merging history trees of dark halos. Gas cooling, star formation, supernova feedback and mergers of galaxies within dark halos are included by using simple prescriptions taken from semi-analytic models of galaxy formation. In this {\it Letter} we exam the merger-driven bulge formation model and represent the morphology-density relation of cluster galaxies at z = 0. We find that this morphological evolution model can explain the distrib…
We simulate the evolution of the intergalactic medium (IGM) in a universe dominated by a cosmological constant. We find that within a few Hubble times from the present epoch, the baryons will have two primary phases: one phase composed of low-density, low-temperature, diffuse, ionized gas which cools exponentially with cosmic time due to adiabatic expansion, and a second phase of high-density, high-temperature gas in virialized dark matter halos which cools much more slowly by atomic processes. The mass fraction of gas in halos converges to ~40% at late times, about twice its calculated value …
We discuss the horizon problem in a universe dominated by fluid with negative pressure. We show that for generally accepted value of nonrelativistic matter energy density parameter $Ω_{m0}<1$, the horizon problem can be solved only if the fluid influencing negative pressure (the so-called ``X'' component) violates the point-wise strong energy condition and if its energy density is sufficiently large $(Ω_{X 0}>1)$. The calculated value of the $Ω_{X0}$ parameter allowing for the solution of the horizon problem is confronted with some recent observational data. Assuming that $p_X/ρ_X<-0.6$ we fin…
Quantum fluctuations of a complex, baryonic charged scalar field caused by inflation can generate large domains, which convert later into antimatter regions. As a result the Universe can become globally matter-dominated, with minor contribution of antimatter regions. The distribution and evolution of such antimatter regions could cause every galaxy to be a harbour of an anti-star globular cluster. At the same time, the scenario does not lead to large-scale isocuvature perturbations, which would disturb observable CMB anisotropy. The existence of one of such antistar globular cluster in our Gal…
In recent years, upper limits on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies combined with predictions made by theories of galaxy formation, have been extremely powerful in ruling out purely baryonic dark matter (BDM) universes. However, it has recently been argued that the absence of a prominent second peak in the anisotropy spectrum measured by the BOOMERanG-98 and MAXIMA-1 experiments seems to favour a $Λ$BDM model when combined with standard Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) constraints. In this {\it Letter}, we further investigate this result showing that, using the CMB data {\it alon…
The temperature distribution function (TDF) of X-ray clusters is derived for different normalizations of the HDM power spectrum in an Omega_0=1 universe using the statistics of peaks of a random Gaussian field. Concerning cluster formation only, the neutrino picture appears to be marginally consistent with observations for H_0=70 km/s/Mpc provided the normalization is alpha=sigma_0/delta_s=0.42 with sigma_0 the rms variance of the fluctuations linearly evolved to the present epoch and delta_s the collapse threshold required in structure formation models. However, using the constraint that the …
Evolution of a universe with homogeneous extra dimensions is studied with the benefit of a well-chosen parameter space that provides a systematic, useful, and convenient way for analysis. In this model we find a natural evolution pattern that entails not only stable extra dimensions in the radiation-dominated era, thereby preserving essential predictions in the standard cosmology, but also the present accelerating expansion while satisfying the limit on the variation of Newtonian gravitational constant. In this natural evolution pattern the extra dimensions tend to be stabilized automatically …
Using numerical simulations, we investigate the large-scale gravitational clustering in a flat universe dominated by cold plus hot dark matter (i.e., $Ω_0=\ocdm+\ohdm+\obaryon=1$). Primordial density fluctuation spectrum is taken to have the Zel'dovich-Harrison form. Three models are studied, with Model I having $\ocdm=0.69$, $\obaryon=0.01$, and $\ohdm=0.30$ in one flavor of neutrinos; Model II having $\ocdm=0.60$, $\obaryon=0.10$, and $\ohdm=0.30$ in one flavor of neutrinos; Model III having $\ocdm=0.69$, $\obaryon=0.01$, and $\ohdm=0.30$ in three flavors of neutrinos. The initial density sp…
The luminosity distance-redshift relation is one of the fundamental tools of modern cosmology. We compute the luminosity distance-redshift relation in a perturbed flat matter-dominated Universe, taking into account the presence of cosmological inhomogeneities up to second order in perturbation theory. Cosmological observations implementing the luminosity distance-redshift relation tell us that the Universe is presently undergoing a phase of accelerated expansion. This seems to call for a mysterious Dark Energy component with negative pressure. Our findings suggest that the need of a Dark Energ…
We analyze the phenomenology of a prolonged early epoch of matter domination by an unstable but very long-lived massive particle. This new matter domination era can help to relax some of the requirements on the primordial inflation. Its main effect is the huge entropy production produced by the decays of such particle that can dilute any possible unwanted relic, as the gravitino in supersymmetric models, and thus relax the constraints on the inflationary reheating temperature. Furthermore, a long period of matter domination reduces the number of $e$-foldings after the horizon crossing by obser…
We perform detailed calculations of cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies in a CDM-dominated open universe with primordial adiabatic density perturbations for a variety of reionization histories. We show that to a great extent, the CMB anisotropies depend only on the geometry of the Universe, which in a matter dominated universe is determined by $Ω$, and the optical depth to the surface of last scattering. In particular, the location of the primary Doppler peak depends primarily on $Ω$ and is fairly insensitive to the other unknown parameters, such as $Ω_b$, $h$, $Λ$, and the shape of…
