To investigate the effect of gravitational lensing of supernovae in large ongoing surveys, we simulate the effect of gravitational lensing magnification on individual supernovae using observational data input from two large supernova surveys. To estimate the magnification due to matter in the foreground, we simulate galaxy catalogs and compute the magnification along individual lines of sight using the multiple lens plane algorithm. The dark matter haloes of the galaxies are modelled as gravitational lenses using singular isothermal sphere or Navarro-Frenk-White profiles. Scaling laws between luminosity and mass, provided by Faber-Jackson and Tully-Fisher relations, are used to estimate the masses of the haloes.
While our simulations show that the SDSSII supernova survey is marginally affected by gravitational lensing, we find that the effect will be measurable in the SNLS survey that probes higher redshifts. Our simulations show that the probability to measure a significant (3 sigma) correlation between the Hubble diagram residuals and the calculated lensing magnification is ~95% in the SNLS data. Moreover, with this data it should be possible to constrain the normalisation of the masses of the lensing galaxy haloes at the 1 sigma and 2 sigma confidence level with ~30% and ~60% accuracy, respectively.
In this review I will describe progress that has been made in determining masses of galaxy clusters using `weak lensing' and how this technique my be applied in the future to determine the dark matter distribution both on supercluster scales and on the scale of galaxy haloes.
We explore various pitfalls and challenges in determining the equation-of-state (w) of dark energy component that dominates the universe and causes the current accelerated expansion. We demonstrated in an earlier paper the existence of a degeneracy that makes it impossible to resolve well the value of w or its time-derivative with supernovae data. Here we consider standard practices, such as assuming priors that w is constant or greater than -1, and show that they also can lead to gross errors in estimating the true equation-of-state. We further consider combining measurements of the cosmic mi…
The present status of weak lensing analyses of clusters of galaxies and of cosmic shear surveys are presented and discussed. We focus on the impact of very large telescopes on present-day and future surveys and compare their potential with HST or wide field 4 meter telescopes.
Weak lensing of galaxies by large scale structure can potentially measure cosmological quantities as accurately as the cosmic microwave background (CMB). However, the relation between observables and fundamental parameters is more complex and degenerate, especially in the full space of adiabatic cold dark matter models considered here. We introduce a Fisher matrix analysis of the information contained in weak lensing surveys to address these issues and provide a simple means of estimating how survey properties and source redshift uncertainties affect parameter measurement. We find that surveys…
Observations of high redshift type Ia supernovae (SNe) will enable us to probe the structure of galaxy halos and the composition of dark matter. The future prospects for this field are briefly discussed here. First the ability of SN observations to differentiate between dark matter made of macroscopic compact objects and dark matter made of microscopic particles is reviewed. Then a new method for probing the structure of galaxy halos and galaxy cluster halos is described. This method utilizes the correlations between foreground galaxy light and supernova brightnesses to substantially decrease …
We assess the possibility of determining the Hubble constant H_0 by measuring time delays between multiple images of supernovae gravitationally lensed by rich clusters of galaxies and combining these delay measurements with detailed cluster-potential models based on other lensing constraints. Such a lensing determination of H_0 would be complementary to those obtained from galaxy-QSO lensing studies, and could potentially be better calibrated. We show that relatively low-redshift (z approximately 0.2), significantly elliptical clusters have appreciable lensing cross sections for observable ima…
We study the impact of systematic errors on planned weak lensing surveys and compute the requirements on their contributions so that they are not a dominant source of the cosmological parameter error budget. The generic types of error we consider are multiplicative and additive errors in measurements of shear, as well as photometric redshift errors. In general, more powerful surveys have stronger systematic requirements. For example, for a SNAP-type survey the multiplicative error in shear needs to be smaller than 1%(fsky/0.025)^{-1/2} of the mean shear in any given redshift bin, while the cen…
We investigate the dependence of the time delays for the large-separation gravitationally lensed quasar SDSS J1004+4112 on the inner mass profile of the lensing cluster. Adopting the mass model whose innermost density profile is parameterized as ρ\propto r^{-α}, we derive a series of mass models which can fit observational data and then compute the probability distribution functions of time delays. We find that larger αhas longer time delays, longer tails at the higher end of the probability distribution, and larger model uncertainties. The ratios of time delays slightly depend on the slope α.…
We review all the cosmic shear results obtained so far, with a critical discussion of the present strengths and weaknesses. We discuss the future prospects and the role cosmic shear could play in a precision cosmology era.
In this brief review I consider the advances made in weak gravitational lensing over the last 8 years, concentrating on the large scales - cosmic shear. I outline the theoretical developments, observational status, and the challenges which cosmic shear must overcome to realise its full potential. Finally I consider the prospects for probing Dark Energy and extra-dimensional gravity theories with future experiments.
I show how weak gravitational lensing can be used to image the 3-D mass distribution in the Universe. An inverse relation to the lensing equation, relating the lensing potential evaluated at each source to the full 3-D Newtonian potential, is derived. I consider the normal modes of the lensing problem and clarify the equations using a small-angle approximation. Finally I consider the prospects of using this method to estimate the 3-D matter distribution from a realistic galaxy lensing survey.
We test the precision with which weak lensing data can provide characteristic cluster mass profiles within Cold Dark Matter scenarios. Using a parallel treecode to simulate volumes as large as 500h-1 Mpc with good resolution, we generate samples of large clusters within a standard CDM model and an open CDM model with Omega_o=0.3. We mock high-quality lensing data by including realistic errors, selecting cluster samples based on velocity dispersion, and fitting profiles within a realistic range in radius. We find that a sample of ten clusters can determine logarithmic profile slopes with 1 sigm…
We consider the prospects for detecting weak gravitational lensing by underdensities (voids) in the large-scale matter distribution. We derive the basic expressions for magnification and distortion by spherical voids. Clustering of the background sources and cosmic variance are the main factors which limit in principle the detection of lensing by voids. We conclude that only voids with radii larger than $\sim 100$ \hm have lensing signal to noise larger than unity.
Gravitational Lensing is a UNIQUE tool to constrain the mass distribution of collapsed structures, this is particularly true for galaxies, either on a case by case basis using multiple images of background sources (such as quasars), or statistically using the so called galaxy-galaxy lensing technique. First, I will present the lensing theory, and then discuss the various methods applied to current observations. Finally, I will review the bright future prospects of galaxy lensing that will benefit of the development of high resolution, large, wide and deep (lensing) surveys.
In the CDM scenario, dark matter halos are assembled hierarchically from smaller subunits. A long-standing problem with this picture is that the number of sub-halos predicted by CDM simulations is orders of magnitudes higher than the known number of satellite galaxies in the vicinity of the Milky Way. A plausible way out of this problem could be that the majority of these sub-halos somehow have so far evaded detection. If such "dark galaxies" do indeed exist, gravitational lensing may offer one of the most promising ways to detect them. Dark matter sub-halos in the 1e6 - 1e10 solar mass range …
Weak gravitational lensing is a unique probe of the dark side of the universe: it provides a direct way to map the distribution of dark matter around galaxies, clusters of galaxies and on cosmological scales. Furthermore, the measurement of lensing induced distortions of the shapes of distant galaxies is a powerful probe of dark energy. In this review we describe how lensing measurements are made and interpreted. We discuss various systematic effects that can hamper progress and how they may be overcome. We review some of the recent results in weak lensing by galaxies, galaxy clusters and cosm…
The dispersion in the peak luminosities of high redshift type Ia supernovae will change with redshift due to gravitational lensing. This lensing is investigated with an emphasis on the prospects of measuring it and separating it from other possible sources of redshift dependent dispersion. Measuring the lensing induced dispersion would directly constrain the power spectrum of density fluctuations on smaller length scales than are easily probed in any other way. The skew of the magnification distribution is related to the bispectrum of density fluctuations. Using cold dark matter models it is f…
We present an integral field spectroscopy survey of rich clusters of galaxies aimed at studying their lensing properties. Thanks to knowledge of the spectroscopic caracteristics of more than three families of multiple images in a single lens, one is able in principle to derive constraints on the geometric cosmological parameters. We show that this ambitious program is feasible and present some new results, in particular the redshift measurement of the giant arc in A2667 and the resdshift confirmation of the counter-image of the radial arc in MS2137--23. Prospects for the future of such program…
Weak gravitational lensing provides a unique method to map directly the distribution of dark matter in the universe and to measure cosmological parameters. This cosmic-shear technique is based on the measurement of the weak distortions that lensing induces in the shape of background galaxies as photons travel through large-scale structures. This technique is now widely used to measure the mass distribution of galaxy clusters and has recently been detected in random regions of the sky. In this review, we present the theory and observational status of cosmic shear. We describe the principles of …
Intrinsically cold particle dark matter inevitably creates halos with sharp discontinuities in projected surface density caused by the projection of fold catastrophes onto the sky. In principle, these imperfections can be detected and measured with gravitational lensing through discontinuities in image magnification and image structure. Lens solutions are discussed for the most common universal classes of discontinuities. Edges caused by cold particles such as condensed axions and thermal WIMPs are very sharp, respectively about $10^{-12}$ and $10^{-7}$ of the halo scale. Their structure can b…
As pointed out in previous studies, the measurement of the skewness of the convergence field $κ$ will be useful in breaking the degeneracy among the cosmological parameters constrained from weak lensing observations. The combination of shot noise and finite survey volume implies that such a measurement is likely to be done in a range of intermediate scales ($0.5'$ to 20') where neither perturbation theory nor the hierarchical ansatz apply. Here we explore the behavior of the skewness of $κ$ at these intermediate scales, based on results for the non-linear evolution of the mass bispectrum. We c…
We investigate the expected correlation between the weak gravitational shear of distant galaxies and the orientation of foreground galaxies, through the use of numerical simulations. This shear-ellipticity correlation can mimic a cosmological weak lensing signal, and is potentially the limiting physical systematic effect for cosmology with future high-precision weak lensing surveys. We find that, if uncorrected, the shear-ellipticity correlation could contribute up to 10% of the weak lensing signal on scales up to 20 arcminutes, for lensing surveys with a median depth z=1. The most massive for…
Power spectra and cross-correlation measurements from the weak gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and the cosmic shearing of faint galaxies images will help shed light on quantities hidden from the CMB temperature anisotropies: the dark energy, the end of the dark ages, and the inflationary gravitational wave amplitude. Even with modest surveys, both types of lensing power spectra break CMB degeneracies and they can ultimately improve constraints on the dark energy equation of state w by over an order of magnitude. In its cross correlation with the integrated Sachs-…
Weak gravitational lensing is responsible for the shearing and magnification of the images of high-redshift sources due to the presence of intervening matter. The distortions are due to fluctuations in the gravitational potential, and are directly related to the distribution of matter and to the geometry and dynamics of the Universe. As a consequence, weak gravitational lensing offers unique possibilities for probing the Dark Matter and Dark Energy in the Universe. In this review, we summarise the theoretical and observational state of the subject, focussing on the statistical aspects of weak …
Deep two-color imaging of 40 clusters of galaxies with the NOT and the University of Hawaii 2.24-m telescope is used to measure the weak gravitational shear acting on faint background galaxies. From this, maps of the projected cluster mass distribution are constructed, and the cluster masses are measured within circular apertures of up to ~3 Mpc/h. The results are used to derive the cluster mass function at z~0.2. The average mass-to-light ratio of the clusters indicate a low-density Universe with Omega_0 around 0.25. Additional mass concentrations are found along the lines of sight to the clu…
The potential of gravitational lenses for providing direct, physical measurements of the Hubble constant, free from systematic errors associated with the traditional distance ladder, has long been recognized. However, it is only recently that there has been a convincing measurement of a time delay sufficiently accurate to carry out this program. By itself, an accurate time delay measurement does not produce an equivalently definite Hubble constant and the errors associated with models of the primary lens, propagation through the potential fluctuations produced by the large-scale structure and …
Gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background by large-scale structure in the late universe is both a source of cosmological information and a potential contaminant of primordial gravity waves. Because lensing imprints growth of structure in the late universe on the CMB, measurements of CMB lensing will constrain parameters to which the CMB would not otherwise be sensitive, such as neutrino mass. If the instrumental noise is sufficiently small (<~ 5 uK-arcmin), the gravitational lensing contribution to the large-scale B-mode will be the limiting source of contamination when constrai…
The well defined selection function of the XMM-LSS survey enables a simultaneous modelling of the observed cluster number counts and of the evolution of the L-T relation. We present results pertaining to the first 5 deg2 for a well controlled sample comprising 30 objects: they are compatible with the WMAP3 parameter set along with cluster self-similar evolution. Extending such a survey to 200 deg2 would (1) allow discriminating between the major scenarios of the cluster L-T evolution and (2) provide a unique self-sufficient determination of sigma8 and Gamma with an accuracy of ~ 5% and 10% res…
(Abridged) Weak gravitational lensing induces distortions on the images of background galaxies, and thus provides a direct measure of mass fluctuations in the universe. Since the distortions induced by lensing on the images of background galaxies are only of a few percent, a reliable measurement demands very accurate galaxy shape estimation and a careful treatment of systematic effects. Here, we present a study of a shear measurement method using detailed simulations of artificial images. The images are produced using realisations of a galaxy ensemble drawn from the HST Groth strip. We conside…
Weak shear maps of the outer regions of clusters have been successfully used to map the distribution of mass at large radii from the cluster center. The typical smoothing lengths employed thus far preclude the systematic study of the effects of galactic-scale substructure on the measured weak lensing signal. In this paper, we present two methods to infer the possible existence and extent of dark halos around bright cluster galaxies by quantifying the `local' weak lensing induced by them. The proposed methods are: direct radial averaging of the shear field in the vicinity of bright cluster memb…
This review forms the microlensing part of the 33rd Saas-Fee Advanced Course "Gravitational Lensing: Strong, Weak & Micro'', which was held in April 2003 in Les Diablerets. It contains an introduction to the lensing effects of single and binary stars and it summarizes the state-of-the-art of microlensing observations and prospects at the time of the meeting. Stellar microlensing as well as quasar microlensing are covered.
Magnification and de-magnification due to gravitational lensing will contribute to the brightness scatter of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). The purpose of this paper is to investigate the possibility to decrease this scatter by correcting individual SNe Ia using observations of galaxies in the foreground, without introducing any extra bias. We simulate a large number of SN Ia lines of sight populated by galaxies. For each line of sight the true magnification factor and an estimate thereof are calculated. The estimated magnification factor corresponds to what an observer would infer from a survey…
We show that by analyzing the spectra of lensed broad absorption line quasars (BALQSOs), it is possible to reveal key properties of the outflowing gas in the inner regions of these objects. This results from the fact that each image of the quasar corresponds to a different line of sight through the outflow. This combined with dynamical estimates for the location of the flow, adds new information concerning the lateral, non line of sight structure of the absorbing gas. Here we consider a sample of lensed BALQSOs and note that the similarity of BAL profiles of different images of the same quasar…
We study the sensitivity of weak lensing by large scale structures to the evolution of dark energy. We explore a 2-parameters model of dark energy evolution, inspired by tracking quintessence models. To this end, we compute the likelihood of a few representative models with varying and non varying equation of states. Based on an earlier work, we show that the evolution of dark energy has a much stronger impact on the non-linear structure growth than on the angular diameter distance, which makes large scale structure measurements a very efficient probe of this evolution. For the different model…
A non-topological soliton model with a repulsive scalar self-interaction of the Emden type provides a constant density core, similarly as the empirical Burkert profile of dark matter haloes. As a further test, we derive the gravitational lens properties of our model, in particular, the demarcation curves between `weak' and `strong' lensing. Accordingly, strong lensing with typically three images is almost three times more probable for our solitonic model than for the Burkert fit. Moreover, some prospective consequences of a possible flattening of dark matter haloes are indicated.
We present the results of a continuing survey to detect Lya emitting galaxies at redshifts z~9: the ZEN ("z equals nine'') survey. We have obtained deep VLT/ISAAC observations in the narrow J-band filter NB119 directed towards three massive lensing clusters: Abell clusters 1689, 1835, and 114. The foreground clusters provide a magnified view of the distant universe and permit a sensitive test for the presence of very high-redshift galaxies. We search for z~9 Lya emitting galaxies displaying a significant narrow-band excess relative to accompanying J-band observations that remain undetected in …
We report a significant detection of weak, tangential distortion of the images of cosmologically distant, faint galaxies due to gravitational lensing by foreground galaxies. A mean image polarisation of $<p>=0.011\pm 0.006$ is measured for 3202 pairs of source galaxies with magnitudes $23< r \le 24$ and lens galaxies with magnitudes $20\le r\le 23$. The signal remains strong for lens-source separations $\lo 90''$, consistent with quasi-isothermal galaxy halos extending to large radii ($\go 100h^{-1}$ kpc). Our observations thus provide the first evidence from weak gravitational lensing of larg…
Lensing tomography with multi-color imaging surveys can probe dark energy and the cosmological power spectrum. However accurate photometric redshifts for tomography out to high redshift require imaging in five or more bands, which is expensive to carry out over thousands of square degrees. Since lensing makes coarse, statistical use of redshift information, we explore the prospects for tomography using limited color information from two or three band imaging. With an appropriate calibration sample, we find that it is feasible to create up to four redshift bins using imaging data in just the g,…
We present a new wide field image of the distant cluster AC114 ($z=0.31$) obtained with Wide Field and Planetary Camera II onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. This image considerably extends our knowledge of the lensing properties of the cluster beyond those derived by Smail \et (1995a) from a single WF/PC-1 pointing. In conjunction with published ground-based spectroscopy, we utilise several newly-discovered multiple images to construct an improved mass model for the central regions of the cluster. Using this model, we apply the methodology introduced by Natarajan & Kneib (1997) to interpret …
Dark energy can be investigated in two complementary ways, by considering either general parameterizations or physically well-defined models. Following the second route, we explore the constraints on quintessence models where the acceleration is driven by a slow-rolling scalar field. The analysis focuses on cosmic shear, combined with supernovae Ia and CMB data. Using a Boltzmann code including quintessence models and the computation of weak lensing observables, we determine several two-point shear statistics. The non-linear regime is described by two different mappings. The likelihood analysi…
We present the first detection of a gravitational depletion signal at near-infrared wavelengths, based on deep panoramic images of the cluster Abell 2219 (z=0.22) taken with the Cambridge Infrared Survey Instrument (CIRSI) at the prime focus of the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope. Infrared studies of gravitational depletion offer a number of advantages over similar techniques applied at optical wavelengths, and can provide reliable total masses for intermediate redshift clusters. Using the maximum likelihood technique developed by Schneider, King & Erben (1999), we detect the gravitational dep…
We present the first measurement of weak lensing by large-scale structure on 1-4 degree scales based on the FIRST Radio Survey, a quarter-sky, 20-cm survey produced with the NRAO Very Large Array (VLA). The large angular scales provide an unique measurement in the linear regime of the matter power spectrum. We use the shapelet method to estimate the shear of radio sources derived directly from the Fourier(uv) plane. With realistic simulations we verify that the method yields unbiased shear estimators. We quantify and correct for the systematic effects which can produce spurious shears, analyti…
We present a prospective analysis of a combined cosmic shear and cosmic microwave background data set, focusing on a Canada France Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) type lensing survey and the current WMAP-1 year and CBI data. We investigate the parameter degeneracies and error estimates of a seven parameters model, for the lensing alone as well as for the combined experiments. The analysis is performed using a Monte Carlo Markov Chain calculation, allowing for a more realistic estimate of errors and degeneracies than a Fisher matrix approach. After a detailed discussion of the relevant …
Until now, the detailed interpretation of the observed microlensing events has suffered from the fact that the physical parameters of the phenomenon cannot be uniquely determined from the available astronomical measurements, i.e. the photometric lightcurves. The situation will change in the near-future with the availability of long-baseline, sensitive optical interferometers, which should be able to resolve the images of the lensed objects into their components. For this, it will be necessary to achieve a milliarcsecond resolution on sources with typical magnitudes K $\ga 12$. Indeed, brighter…
A new generation of instruments will reveal the microwave sky at high resolution. We focus on one of these, the Atacama Cosmology Telescope, which probes scales 1000<l<10000, where both primary and secondary anisotropies are important. Including lensing, thermal and kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effects, and extragalactic point sources, we simulate the telescope's observations of the CMB in three channels, then extract the power spectra of these components in a multifrequency analysis. We present results for various cases, differing in assumed knowledge of the contaminating point sources. We …
