In the CDM scenario, dark matter halos are assembled hierarchically from smaller subunits. A long-standing problem with this picture is that the number of sub-halos predicted by CDM simulations is orders of magnitudes higher than the known number of satellite galaxies in the vicinity of the Milky Way. A plausible way out of this problem could be that the majority of these sub-halos somehow have so far evaded detection. If such "dark galaxies" do indeed exist, gravitational lensing may offer one of the most promising ways to detect them. Dark matter sub-halos in the 1e6 - 1e10 solar mass range should cause strong gravitational lensing on (sub)milliarcsecond scales. We study the feasibility of a strong lensing detection of dark sub-halos by deriving the image separations expected for density profiles favoured by recent simulations and comparing these to the angular resolution of both existing and upcoming observational facilities. We find that there is a reasonable probability to detect sub-halo lensing effects in high resolution observations at radio wavelengths, such as produced by the upcoming VSOP-2 satellite, and thereby test the existence of dark galaxies.
We present the first study on the mass functions of Jenkins et al (J01) and an estimate of their corresponding largest virialized dark halos in the Universe for a variety of dark-energy cosmological models with a running spectral index. Compared with the PL-CDM model, the RSI-CDM model can raise the mass abundance of dark halos for small mass halos at lower redshifts, but it is not apparent on scales of massive mass halos. Particularly, this discrepancy increases largely with the decrease of redshift, and the RSI-CDM model can suppress the mass abundance on any scale of halo masses at higher r…
Numerical simulation is an important tool to help us understand the process of structure formation in the universe. However many simulation results of cold dark matter (CDM) halos on small scale are inconsistent with observations: the central density profile is too cuspy and there are too many substructures. Here we point out that these two problems may be connected with a hitherto unrecognized bias in the simulation halos. Although CDM halos in nature and in simulation are both virialized systems of collisionless CDM particles, gravitational encounter cannot be neglected in the simulation hal…
N-body simulations find a universal structure for the halos which result from the nonlinear growth of Gaussian-random-noise density fluctuations in the CDM universe. This talk summarized our attempts to derive and explain this universal structure by analytical approximation and simplified models. As an example, we show here that a 1D spherical infall model involving a fluid approximation derived from the Boltzmann equation can explain not only the halo density profile but its phase-space density profile, as well.
We derive an analytic model for the redshift evolution of linear-bias, allowing for interactions and merging of the mass-tracers, by solving a second order differential equation based on linear perturbation theory and the Friedmann-Lemaitre solutions of the cosmological field equations. We then study the halo-mass dependence of the bias evolution, using the dark matter halo distribution in a $Λ$CDM simulation in order to calibrate the free parameters of the model. Finally, we compare our theoretical predictions with available observational data and find a good agreement. In particular, we find…
If the dark matter particle is a neutralino then the first structures to form are cuspy cold dark matter (CDM) haloes collapsing after redshifts z ~ 100 in the mass range 10^{-6} - 10^{-3} Msun. We carry out a detailed study of the survival of these micro-haloes in the Galaxy as they experience tidal encounters with stars, molecular clouds, and other dark matter substructures. We test the validity of analytic impulsive heating calculations using high resolution N-body simulations. A major limitation of analytic estimates is that mean energy inputs are compared to mean binding energies, instead…
Neutralino dark matter leads to the formation of numerous earth mass dark matter haloes at redshifts z\approx 60 (Diemand et al. 2005). These abundant CDM micro-haloes have cuspy density profiles that can easily withstand the Galactic tidal field at the solar radius. Zhao, Taylor, Silk & Hooper (astro-ph/0502049) concluded that ``...the majority of dark matter substructures with masses \sim 10^{-6}M_o will be tidally disrupted due to interactions with stars in the Galactic halo''. However these authors assumed a halo density of stars that is at least an order of magnitude higher than observed.…

We investigate the figure rotation of dark matter halos identified in Lambda CDM simulations. We find that when strict criteria are used to select suitable halos for study, 5 of the 222 halos identified in our z=0 simulation output undergo coherent figure rotation over a 5h^{-1}Gyr period. We discuss the effects of varying the selection criteria and find that pattern speeds for a much larger fraction of the halos can be measured when the criteria are relaxed. Pattern speeds measured over a 1h^{-1}Gyr period follow a log-normal distribution, centred at Omega_p = 0.25h rad/Gyr with a maximum val…
Central galaxies in galaxy clusters may be key discriminants in the competition between the cold dark matter (CDM) paradigm and modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND). We investigate the dark halo of NGC 1399, the central galaxy of the Fornax cluster, out to a galactocentric distance of 80 kpc. The data base consists of 656 radial velocities of globular clusters obtained with MXU/VLT and GMOS/Gemini, which is the largest sample so far for any galaxy. We performed a Jeans analysis for a non-rotating isotropic model. An NFW halo with the parameters r_s = 50 kpc and rho_s = 0.0065 M_sun/pc^3 provides…
I review recent results on the spatial distribution of substructure in CDM halos. I show that the spatial distribution of subhalos is anisotropic and generally prolate with a long axis that is closely aligned with the long axis of the total mass distribution of the host halo. I show that the correlation between the subhalo distribution and the long axis of the host halo is strong both in dissipationless and dissipational gasdynamical simulations. More massive subhalos tend to be more strongly clustered along the major axis of the host halo reflecting filamentary accretion. The anisotropy of su…
If the concordance $Λ$CDM model is a true description of the universe, it should also properly predict the properties and structure of dark matter haloes, where galaxies are born. Using N-body simulations with a broad scale of mass and spatial resolution, we study the structure of dark matter haloes, the distribution of masses and the spatial distribution of subhaloes within the main haloes. We carry out three $Λ$CDM simulations with different resolutions using the AMIGA code. Dark matter haloes are identified using an algorithm that is based on the adaptive grid structure of the simulation co…
We present BVI photometry and long-slit Halpha rotation curve data obtained with ESO VLT/FORS2 for six low surface brightness galaxies with extremely blue colours and very faint central regions. We find no evidence for a steep central density cusp of the type predicted by many N-body simulations of cold dark matter (CDM) halos. Our observations are instead consistent with dark matter halos characterized by cores of roughly constant density, in agreement with previous investigations. While unremarkable in terms of the central density slope, these galaxies appear very challenging for existing CD…
We analyze the evolution of stellar bars in galactic disks in mildly triaxial flat-core and cuspy CDM halos. We use tailored simulations of rigid and live halos which include the feedback from disk/bar onto the halo in order to test the work by El-Zant & Shlosman (2002). The latter used the Liapunov exponents to analyze the fate of bars in analytical asymmetric halos. We find: (1) The bar growth is similar in all rigid axisymmetric and triaxial halos. (2) Bars in live models vertically buckle and form a pseudobulge with a boxy/peanut shape. (3) In live axisymmetric halos, the bar strength vari…
The concordance cosmological model based on cold dark matter makes definitive predictions for the growth of galaxies in the Universe, which are being actively studied using numerical simulations. These predictions appear to contradict the observations of dwarf galaxies. Dwarf dark matter halos are more numerous and have steeper central density profiles than the observed galaxies. The first of these small-scale problems, the "missing satellites problem", can be resolved by accounting for the low efficiency of gas cooling and star formation in dwarf halos. A newly-discovered class of HyperVeloci…
A recent study has claimed that the rotation curve shapes and mass densities of Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies are largely consistent with $Λ$CDM predictions, in contrast to a large body of observational work. I demonstrate that the method used to derive this conclusion is incapable of distinguishing the characteristic steep CDM mass-density distribution from the core-dominated mass-density distributions found observationally: even core-dominated pseudo-isothermal haloes would be inferred to be consistent with CDM. This method can therefore make no definitive statements on the (dis)agre…
We examine masses of hosting haloes of two photometrically-selected high-z galaxy samples: the old passively-evolving galaxies (OPEGs) and Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) both taken from the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS). The large survey area of the SXDS (1sq deg) allows us to measure the angular two-point correlation functions to a wide separation of >10 arcmin with a good statistical quality. We utilize the halo model prescription for estimating characteristic masses of hosting haloes from the measured large-scale clustering amplitudes. It is found that the hosting halo mass positively c…
We place additional constraints on the three parameters of the dark matter halo merger rate function recently proposed by Parkinson, Cole & Helly by utilizing Smoluchowski's coagulation equation, which must be obeyed by any binary merging process which conserves mass. We find that the constraints from Smoluchowski's equation are degenerate, limiting to a thin plane in the three dimensional parameter space. This constraint is consistent with those obtained from fitting to N-body measures of progenitor mass functions, and provides a better match to the evolution of the overall dark matter halo m…
The size and time of formation of the first gravitationally bound objects in the Universe is set by the microphysical properties of the dark matter. It is argued that observations seem to favour cold and thermal candidates for the main contribution to the dark matter. For that type of dark matter, the size and time of formation of the first halos is determined by the elastic cross sections and mass of the CDM particles. Consequently, the astrophysics of CDM might allow us to measure some of the fundamental parameters of CDM particles. Essential for observations is the survival rate and spatial…
We study the spatial distribution of satellite galaxies by assuming that they follow the dark matter distribution. This assumption is supported by semi-analytical studies based on high-resolution numerical simulations. We find that for a Milky-Way type halo, if only a dozen satellite galaxies are observed, then they can lie on a ``great'' disk with an rms height of about 40 kpc. The normal to the plane is roughly isotropic on the sky. These results are consistent with the observed properties of the satellite galaxies in the Milky Way. If, however, the satellite galaxies follow the distribution…
The Central Mass and Phase-Space Densities of Dark Matter Halos: Cosmological Implications
N-body simulations predict that CDM halo-assembly occurs in two phases: 1) a fast accretion phase with a rapidly deepening potential well; and 2) a slow accretion phase characterised by a gentle addition of mass to the outer halo with little change in the inner potential well. We demonstrate, using one-dimensional simulations, that this two-phase accretion leads to CDM halos of the NFW form and provides physical insight into the properties of the mass accretion history that influence the final profile. Assuming that the velocities of CDM particles are effectively isotropised by fluctuations in…
We show that the two basic assumptions of the model recently proposed by Manrique and coworkers for the universal density profile of cold dark matter (CDM) halos, namely that these objects grow inside out in periods of smooth accretion and that their mass profile and its radial derivatives are all continuous functions, are both well understood in terms of the very nature of CDM. Those two assumptions allow one to derive the typical density profile of halos of a given mass from the accretion rate characteristic of the particular cosmology. This profile was shown by Manrique and coworkers to rec…
We use high-resolution simulations of large-scale structure formation to analyze the effects of interacting dark matter and dark energy on the evolution of the halo mass function. Using a chi-square likelihood analysis, we find significant differences in the mass function between models of coupled dark matter-dark energy and standard concordance cosmology Lambda-CDM out to redshift z=1.5. We also find a preliminary indication that the Dark Energy Survey should be able to distinguish these models from Lambda-CDM within its mass and redshift contraints. While we can distinguish the effects of th…
We present a cosmologically motivated model for the hierachical formation of the stellar halo which includes a semi-analytic treatment of galactic chemical enrichment coupled to numerical simulations that track the orbital evolution and tidal disruption of satellites. A major motivating factor in this investigation is the observed systematic difference between the chemical abundances of stars in satellite galaxies and those in the Milky Way halo. Specifically, for the same [Fe/H] values, stars in neighboring satellite galaxies display significantly lower [alpha/Fe] ratios than stars in the hal…
