Several spin and flavor dependent parameters characterizing the strangeness content of the nucleon have been calculated in the chiral constituent quark model with configuration mixing (\chiCQM_{config}) which is known to provide a satisfactory explanation of the ``proton spin crisis'' and related issues. In particular, we have calculated the strange spin polarization Δs, the strangeness contribution to the weak axial vector couplings Δ_8 etc., strangeness contribution to the magnetic moments μ(p)^s etc., the strange quark flavor fraction f_s, the strangeness dependent quark flavor ratios \frac{2 \bar s}{u+d} and \frac{2 \bar s}{\bar u+ \bar d} etc.. Our results are consistent with the recent experimental observations.
Simple experimental tests are proposed which can clarify the origin for the anomalously high $η'$ appearance in charmless strange final states in $B$ decays and can investigate the the nature of SU(3) symmetry-breaking in weak heavy flavor decays.
We apply the perturbative chiral quark model at one loop to calculate the strange form factors of the nucleon. A detailed numerical analysis of the strange magnetic moments and radii of the nucleon, and also the momentum dependence of the form factors is presented.
A model combining vector meson dominance, $ω- ϕ$ mixing and a kaon cloud contribution is used to estimate the strangeness vector form factors of the nucleon in the momentum range of the planned measurements at MIT-Bates and CEBAF. We compare our results with some other theoretical estimates and discuss the nucleon strangeness radius in models based on dynamically dressed, extended constituent quarks. For a quantitative estimate in the latter framework we use the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model.
Pronounced effects due to final state hyperon-nucleon interaction are predicted in strangeness photoproduction reaction on the deuteron. Use is made of the covariant reaction formalism and the P- matrix approach to the hyperon-nucleon interaction.
We have applied the Meson Cloud Model (MCM) to calculate the charm and strange antiquark distribution in the nucleon. The resulting distribution, in the case of charm, is very similar to the intrinsic charm momentum distribution in the nucleon. This seems to corroborate the hypothesis that the intrinsic charm is in the cloud and, at the same time, explains why other calculations with the MCM involving strange quark distributions fail in reproducing the low x region data. From the intrinsic strange distribution in the nucleon we have extracted the strangeness radius of the nucleon, which is in …
We consider different methods and observables which can be obtained by the measurement of neutrino scattering off nucleons and nuclei with the purpose of finding evidence for the strange form factors of the nucleon, which enter into structure of the nucleonic weak neutral current.
We summarize three alternative extensions of the quark-valence picture of nucleon strangeness and spin, including (1) gluon spin in QCD, (2) Bjorken sum rule and QCD, (3) D--E meson mixing and tadpole leakage. All three approaches suggest that ~40% of the nucleon's spin (as well as its momentum) resides with quarks, but that less than 6% is due to strange quarks.
We introduce the concept of ``locality" for the strange sea in the nucleon, which measures proximity of the strange and anti-strange quarks in the momentum and coordinate spaces. The CCFR data for the strange and anti-strange distributions imply a ``local" strange sea in the momentum space, which is unexpected in QCD and is at variance with the simple meson-cloud model where the strangeness is generated from the virtual transition of the nucleon to a hyperon plus a kaon. We present a simple model to interpret the CCFR data and to correlate momentum and coordinate space locality, yielding an up…
Elastic scattering of neutrinos and antineutrinos on nucleons is considered. It is shown that the measurement of the neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry would allow to obtain model independent informations on the strange axial and vector form factors. The ratio of the magnetic form factors of the proton and neutron, on which the asymmetry depends, is investigated in detail. The asymmetry is calculated under different assumptions on the behavior of the strange vector and axial form factors.
We consider a simple model for the strangeness radius of the nucleon. The model is based on vector meson dominance (VMD) and $ω- ϕ$ mixing in addition to a kaon cloud contribution. We find that the VMD contribution is similar in magnitude and of the same sign as the kaon contribution to the Sachs strangeness radius and is significantly larger than the kaon contribution to the Dirac radius. Two figures (not included) can be obtained through the authors (marina@quark.umd.edu).
On top of its valence quarks, the full nucleon ground state may contain appreciable admixture of s-\bar{s} pairs already at small momentum transfers. This paper discusses strangeness in the mean-field type of nucleon models, and exemplifies this by explicit calculations in the MIT bag model enriched by the presence of instantons. We calculate the instanton contribution to the strangeness in the MIT bag (on top of the standard contribution to strangeness found in that model). Although we do it in an essentially perturbative way, we present a detailed derivation of the formula expressing nucleon…
Within the Nambu--Jona--Lasinio model strange degrees of freedom are incorporated into the soliton picture using the collective approach of Yabu and Ando. The form factors of the nucleon associated with the nonet vector current are extracted. The numerical results provide limits for the strange magnetic moment: $-0.05\leμ_s\le0.25$. For the strange magnetic form factor of the nucleon the valence quark and vacuum contributions add coherently while there are significant cancellations for the strange electric form factor.
The axial strange form factor $F^s_A$ of the nucleon is assumed to be dominated at low momentum transfer by the isoscalar axial vector mesons $f_1(1285)$ and $f_1(1420)$. The importance of the $a_0πN$-triangular vertex correction is demonstrated.
The possibility to determine the axial strange form factor of the nucleon from elastic neutrino-nucleon scattering experiments is studied. The existing experimental information is shortly mentioned and several observables which could be measured in the near future at new neutrino facilities are discussed.
Precise knowledge of the strange and antistrange quark distributions of the nucleon is a major step toward better understanding of the strong interaction and the nucleon structure. Moreover, the $ s-\bar s $ asymmetry in the nucleon plays an important role in some physical processes involving hadrons. The goal of this paper is the study of intrinsic strange contribution to the strange sea of the nucleon. To this aim, we calculate the intrinsic strange distributions from the various light-cone models including BHPS, scalar five-quark and meson-baryon models and then compare their results. These…
Several parameters characterizing the strangeness content of the nucleon have been calculated in the chiral constituent quark model with configuration mixing (\chiCQM_{config}) which is known to provide a satisfactory explanation of the ``proton spin problem'' and related issues. In particular, we have calculated the strange spin polarization Δs, the strangeness contribution to the weak axial vector couplings Δ_8 etc., strangeness contribution to the magnetic moments μ(p)^s etc., the strange quark flavor fraction f_s, the strangeness dependent quark ratios \frac{2 \bar s}{u+d} and \frac{2 \bar…
A large violation of the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka rule was discovered in the annihilation of stopped antiprotons. The explanation of these experimental data is discussed in the framework of the model assumed that the nucleon strange sea quarks are polarized.
There are several different experimental indications, such as the strangeness contribution to the magnetic moment of the proton, sigma_{πN} term, strange spin polarization, ratio of strange and non strange quark flavor distributions which suggest that the nucleon contains a hidden strangeness component which is contradictory to the naive constituent quark model. Chiral constituent quark model with configuration mixing (\chiCQM_{\rm config}) is known to provide a satisfactory explanation of the ``proton spin problem'' and related issues. In the present work, we have extended the model to carry …
We perform QCD fit of the nucleon strange and anti-strange sea distributions to the neutrino and anti-neutrino dimuon data by the CCFR and NuTeV collaborations, supplemented by the inclusive charged lepton-nucleon Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) and Drell-Yan data. The effective semi-leptonic charmed-hadron branching ratio is constrained from the inclusive charmed hadron measurements performed by the FNAL-E531 and CHORUS neutrino emulsion experiments as $B_μ=(8.8\pm0.5)%$. We obtain a strange sea suppression factor {$κ(20 {\rm GeV}^2)=0.62\pm0.04({\rm exp.})\pm0.03({\rm QCD})$}. An $x$-distrib…
The strange magnetic moment of the nucleon ($μ_s$) is examined as part of the nucleon's isoscalar anomalous moment. The dominant up and down quark effects in the anomalous moment may actually tend to favor $μ_s >0$, which is contrary to the negative values that generally result from model calculations. The possible origins of this apparent discrepancy are considered.
We investigate three different axial-vector form factors of the nucleon, $G_A^{0}$, $G_A^3$, $G_A^8$, within the framework of the SU(3) chiral quark-soliton model, emphasizing their strangeness content. We take into account the rotational $1/N_c$ and linear strange quark ($m_s$) contributions using the symmetry-conserving SU(3) quantization and assuming isospin symmetry. The strange axial-vector form factor is also obtained and they all are discussed in the context of the parity-violating scattering of polarized electrons off the nucleon and its relevance to the strange vector form factors.
We consider a scenario, within the framework of the MSSM, in which dark matter is bino-like and dark matter-nucleon spin-independent scattering occurs via the exchange of light squarks which exhibit left-right mixing. We show that direct detection experiments such as LUX and SuperCDMS will be sensitive to a wide class of such models through spin-independent scattering. Moreover, these models exhibit properties, such as isospin violation, that are not typically observed for the MSSM LSP if scattering occurs primarily through Higgs exchange. The dominant nuclear physics uncertainty is the quark …
Most of model considerations of the hidden nucleon strangeness, as well as some preliminary experimental evidence, led to the expectations of relatively sizeable strange vector form factors of the proton. For example, it seemed that the contribution of the fluctuating strange quark-antiquark pairs accounts for as much as one tenth of the proton's magnetic moment. By the same token, baryon models which failed to produce the "vector strangeness" of the nucleon seemed disfavored. Recently, however, more accurate measurements and more sophisticated data analysis, as well as lattice simulations, re…
In chiral models with SU(3) group structure, strange form factors of baryon octet are evaluated by constructing their sum rules to yield theoretical predictions comparable to the recent experimental data of SAMPLE Collaboration. We also study sum rules for the flavor singlet axial currents for the EMC experiment in a modified quark model.
Scalar matrix elements involving strange quarks are studied in several models. Apart from a critical reexamination of results obtained in the Nambu and Jona-Lasinio model we study a scenario, motivated by instanton physics, where spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking is induced by the flavor-mixing 't Hooft interaction only. We also investigate possible contributions of virtual kaon loops to the strangeness content of the nucleon.
Data on mean numbers of $Λ$, $\barΛ$, K's and on the total number $<s\bar s>$ of pairs of strange valence quarks in final state hadrons in hadronic and nuclear collisions at CERN- SPS energies are studied as a function of the mean number $<n_{coll}>$ of nucleon- nucleon collisions. Results give indications of an almost linear dependence over most of the region of $<n_{coll}>$. This in turn points out to strangeness being produced mostly in the central rapidity region of nucleon- nucleon collisions by a mechanism similar to a hard or semi- hard process. The available data are extrapolated to Pb…
We propose new method which allows determination of the strange-sea quark spin distribution in the nucleon through measurement of various inclusive and semi-inclusive polarized deep inelastic electron- or muon-proton reactions. It is shown, that using combinations of inclusive data and semi-inclusive data containing neutral pions in the final state, it is possible to extract the strange-sea quark spin distribution. Similar result can be obtained for charged pions and some other hadrons also.
Theoretical predictions are given for the strange sea distributions in the nucleon based on the flavor SU(3) chiral quark soliton model, with emphasis upon the asymmetry of quark and antiquark distributions. We find that the quark-antiquark asymmetry of the strange sea is much larger for the longitudinally polarized distribution functions than for the unpolarized ones. A preliminary comparison with the CCFR data for the unpolarized $s$-quark distribution and with the LSS fits of the longitudinally polarized distribution functions is encouraging.
The chiral constituent quark model ($χ$CQM) has been extended to calculate the flavor structure of the nucleon through the meson-nucleon sigma terms which have large contributions from the quark sea and are greatly affected by chiral symmetry breaking and SU(3) symmetry breaking. The hidden strangeness component in the nucleon has also been investigated and its significant contribution is found to be consistent with the recent available experimental observations.
In the chirally symmetric Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model baryons are described as chiral solitons of mesonic quark--antiquark bound states. Hyperons are investigated in two complementary pictures: the bound state approach of Callan and Klebanov and the collective approach of Yabu and Ando. The latter is used to compute the strange vector form factors of the nucleon providing estimates for the strange electric mean square radius and the strange magnetic moment of the nucleon.
Special eight-resonance unitary and analytic model of nucleon electromagnetic structure is used to analyze, first the classical proton form factor data obtained by the Rosenbluth technique and then also the contradicting JLab proton polarization data on the ratio $μ_p G_{Ep}(Q^2)/G_{Mp}(Q^2)$ with the aim to investigate a manifestation of the latter on the strange nucleon form factors behaviour.
Interest in the strange nucleon sea has been renewed when it was realized that the strangeness asymmetry $s^-=s-\bar{s}$ plays a prominent role in the interpretation of the NuTeV weak mixing angle anomaly. I review the NLO QCD calculation of the neutrino-production of opposite-sign dimuons as the experimental signature of the strange quark parton density. Results from a recent CTEQ fit are presented and discussed with respect to their stability under NLO corrections and their impact on the NuTeV measurement.
We extend to the strange quarks and antiquarks, the statistical approach of parton distributions and we calculate the strange quark asymmetry $s-\bar s$. We find that the asymmetry is small, positive in the low $x$ region and negative in the high $x$ region. In this framework, the polarized strange quarks and antiquarks distributions, which are obtained simultaneously, are found to be both negative for all $x$ values.
The color-flavor locked (CFL) phase of strangelets is investigated in a quark mass density-dependent model. Parameters are determined by stability arguments. It is concluded that three solutions to the system equations can be found, corresponding, respectively, to positively charged, negatively charged, and nearly neutral CFL strangelets. The charge to baryon number of the positively charged strangelets is smaller than the previous result, while the charge of the negatively charged strangelets is nearly proportional in magnitude to the cubic-root of the baryon number. However, the positively c…
We present an analysis of the nucleon strange sea extracted from a global Parton Distribution Function fit including the neutrino and anti-neutrino dimuon data by the CCFR and NuTeV collaborations, the inclusive charged lepton-nucleon Deep Inelastic Scattering and Drell-Yan data. The (anti-)neutrino induced dimuon analysis is constrained by the semi-leptonic charmed-hadron branching ratio $B_μ=(8.8\pm0.5)%$, determined from the inclusive charmed hadron measurements performed by the FNAL-E531 and CHORUS neutrino emulsion experiments. Our analysis yields a strange sea suppression factor $κ(Q^2=2…
Our recent theoretical analysis based on the flavor SU(3) chiral quark soliton model predicts fairly large particle-antiparticle asymmetry of the strange sea in the nucleon. We point out that the predicted magnitude of asymmetry is large enough to solely resolve the so-called NuTeV anomaly on the fundamental parameter $\sin^2 θ_W$ in the standard model.
We point out that perturbative evolution in QCD at three loops generates a strange-antistrange asymmetry s(x)-sbar(x) in the nucleon's sea just from the fact that the nucleon has non-vanishing up and down quark valence densities. The recently computed three-loop splitting functions allow for an estimate of this effect. We find that a fairly sizable asymmetry may be generated. Results for analogous asymmetries in the heavy-quark sector are also presented.
We discuss the general method of the calculation of the nucleon matrix elements of an operator associated with nonvalence quarks. The method is based on the QCD sum rules and low energy theorems. As an application of these considerations, we calculate the strange quark matrix element as well as the momentum distribution of the strangeness in the nucleon. We also calculate the singlet axial constant associated with $η'$ meson as well as an axial constant associated with heavy quarks.
Deuteron electrodisintegration is described in a relativistic PWIA framework. The reduction to the factorized PWIA, and the effect thereof on the observables accessible in parity-violating scattering, is discussed. The extent to which such relativistic effects may affect the extraction of strangeness nucleon form factors from measurements of the PV asymmetry, is investigated.
The strange magnetic form factor of the nucleon is studied in the heavy baryon chiral effective approach at next to leading order. The one loop contributions from kaon and intermediate octet and decuplet hyperons are included, using finite-range-regularization to deal with the ultra-violet divergences. Drawing on an established connection between quenched and full QCD, this model makes it possible to predict the strange magnetic form factor under the hypothesis that for a dipole regulator mass $Λ$ around 0.8 GeV, strangeness in the core is negligible. The strange magnetic form factor is found …
A remarkably successful program of parity-violating electron scattering experiments is providing new insight into the structure of the nucleon. Measurement of the vector form factors enables a definitive study of potential strange quark-antiquark contributions to the electromagnetic structure such as the magnetic moment and charge distribution. Recent experimental results have already indicated that effects of strangeness are much smaller than theoretically expected. In addition, the neutral axial form factor appears to display substantial corrections as one might expect from an anapole effect…
We provide the isoscalar factors of the SU(3) Clebsch-Gordan series 8x35 which are extensions of the previous works of de Swart, McNamee and Chilton and play practical roles in current ongoing strange flavor hadron physics research. To this end, we pedagogically study the SU(3) Lie algebra, its spin symmetries, and its eigenvalues for irreducible representations. We also evaluate the values of the Wigner D functions related to the isoscalar factors; these functions are immediately applicable to strange flavor hadron phenomenology. Exploiting these SU(3) group properties associated with the spi…
We evaluate the medium effects in nucleon which can induce an asymmetry of the strange sea. The short-distance effects determined by the weak interaction can give rise to $δm\equiv Δm_s-Δm_{\bar s}$ where $Δm_{s(\bar s)}$ is the medium-induced mass of strange quark by a few KeV at most, but the long-distance effects by strong interaction could be sizable.
The strange form factors of nucleon are studied with the nonlocal chiral effective Lagrangian. One loop contributions from both octet and decuplet intermediate states are included. The relativistic regulator is obtained by the nonlocal Lagrangian where the gauge link is introduced to guarantee the local gauge symmetry. With the kaon loop, the calculated charge form factor is positive, while the magnetic form factor is negative. The strange magnetic moment is $-0.041^{+0.012}_{-0.014}$ with $Λ=0.9 \pm 0.1$ determined from the nucleon electromagnetic form factors. Our results are comparable with…
The strangeness contribution to the nucleon magnetic moment is calculated at the one-loop level in a relativistic SU(3) chiral potential model and is found to be {\em positive}, that is, with an {\em opposite} sign to the nucleon strangeness polarization. It is the ``Z'' diagram that violates the usual relation between spin and magnetic moment. The positive value is due to the contribution from the intermediate excited quark states, while the intermediate ground state gives a negative contribution. Our numerical results agree quite well with the new measurement of the SAMPLE Collaboration.
In view of the numerous experimental results recently released, we provide in this letter an update on the performance of our simple Regge model for strangeness electroproduction on the nucleon. Without refitting any parameters, a decent description of all measured observables and channels is achieved. We also give predictions for spin transfer observables, recently measured at Jefferson Lab which have high sensitivity to discriminate between different theoretical approaches.
The strangeness degrees of freedom in the parton structure of the nucleon are explored in the global analysis framework, using the new CTEQ6.5 implementation of the general mass perturbative QCD formalism of Collins. We systematically determine the constraining power of available hard scattering experimental data on the magnitude and shape of the strange quark and anti-quark parton distributions. We find that current data favor a distinct shape of the strange sea compared to the isoscalar non-strange sea. A new reference parton distribution set, CTEQ6.5S0, and representative sets spanning the …
We investigated the form factors of the nucleon associated with the nonet vector current in the framework of the generalized Yabu--Ando approach to the chiral soliton of the Nambu--Jona--Lasinio model. We introduce a variational parameter to improve the predictions for the baryon mass splittings and, in addition, we take into account $1/N_c$ rotational corrections to accommodate the empirical isovector magnetic moment of the nucleon. We find that the strange magnetic moment lies between -0.05 and 0.25.
The NC and CC scattering of neutrino(antineutrino) on protons and nuclei with isotopic spin equal to zero is considered. It is shown that the measurement of the neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry in these processes could allow to obtain model-independent information about the contribution of the axial strange current to the cross sections of the NC processes.
A new QCD calculation of the mass of the nucleon is presented. It makes use of a polynomial kernel in the dispersion integrals tailored to practically eliminate the contribution of the unknown 1=2+ and 1=2- continuum. This approach avoids the arbitrariness and instability attached to the Borel kernel used in previous sum rules calculations. Our method yields stable results for the nucleon mass and coupling. For standard values of the condensates, the prediction of the nucleon mass in the chiral limit is mN = (830+/-50)MeV. With the pion-nucleon sigma-term given by chiral perturbation theory an…
The strange particle production off the nucleon induced by neutrinos and antineutrinos is investigated at low and intermediate energies. We develop a microscopic model based on the SU(3) chiral Lagrangian. The studied mechanisms are the main source of single kaon production for (anti)neutrino energies up to 1.5 GeV. Using this model we have also studied the associated production of kaons and hyperons. The cross sections are large enough to be measured by experiments such as MINER$ν$A, T2K and NO$ν$A.
The contribution of the strange-quark current to the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon is studied using lattice QCD. The strange current matrix elements from our lattice calculation are analyzed in two different ways, the differential method used in an earlier work by Wilcox and a cumulative method which sums over all current insertion times. The preliminary results of our simulation indicate the importance of high statistics, and that consistent results between the varying analysis methods can be achieved. Although this simulation does not yet yield a number that can be compared to …
The NuTeV anomaly of a non-universal value of the fundamental parameter sin^2θ_W in the electroweak theory has been interpreted as an indication for new physics beyond the Standard Model. However, the observed quantity depends on a possible asymmetry in the momentum distributions of strange quarks and antiquarks in the nucleon. This asymmetry occurs naturally in a phenomenologically successful physical model for such parton distributions, which reduces the NuTeV result to only about two standard deviations from the Standard Model.
We calculate the nucleon strangeness $y_N$ in the chiral quark model and the meson cloud model. With the internal relation between the sigma term of $π$$N$ ($σ_{πN}$) and $y_N$, we present the results of $σ_{πN}$ in these two models. Our calculations show that $y_N$ from the chiral quark model is significant larger than that from the meson cloud model, whereas the difference of $σ_{πN}$ between the two models is relatively small. We also present the results of $σ_{K N}$ and $σ_{ηN}$, which could be determined by $σ_{πN}$ and $y_N$ from their definition in the current algebra, and find that the…
There are two mechanisms for the generation of an asymmetry between the strange and anti-strange quark distributions in the nucleon: nonperturbative contributions originating from nucleons fluctuating into virtual baryon-meson pairs such as $ΛK$ and $ΣK$, and perturbative contributions arising from gluons splitting into strange and anti-strange quark pairs. While the nonperturbative contributions are dominant in the large-$x$ region, the perturbative contributions are more significant in the small-$x$ region. We calculate this asymmetry taking into account both nonperturbative and perturbative…
