We discuss thermodynamic properties of dark energy using the formalism of field theory at finite temperature. In particular, we apply our formalism to a purely kinetic type of k-essence. We show quite generally that the entropy associated with dark-energy is always equal or greater than zero. Hence, contrary to often stated claims, a violation of the null energy condition (phantom dark energy) does not necessarily yield a negative entropy. In addition, we find that the thermal fluctuations of a k-essence field may be represented by a free boson gas with an effective number of degrees of freedom equal to c_s^{-3}.
In the present work we investigated the validity of the generalized second law (GSL) of thermo- dynamics in presence of interaction between DBI-essence and other four candidates of dark energy namely modified Chaplygin gas, hessence, tachyonic field and new agegraphic dark energy. It has been observed that the GSL breaks down in presence of the interactions. However, the event horizon remains to be an increasing function of time.
The {\bf k-}essence emergent Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter spacetime has exactly mapped on to the Robinson-Trautman (RT) type spacetime with cosmological constant $Ł$ for certain configuration of {\bf k-}essence scalar field. Theoretically, we evaluated that the thermodynamical quantities for the RT type emergent black hole is different from the usual one in the presence of kinetic energy of the {\bf k-}essence scalar field i.e., the dark energy density. We restrict ourselves into the fact that the dark energy density (K) is to be unity, then the effective temperature and pressure both are nega…
In this work, we have considered the DBI-essence dark energy model in FRW Universe. We have found the exact solutions of potential, warped brane tension and DBI scalar field. We also calculate the statefinder parameters for our model that make it distinguishable among numerous dark energy models. Moreover, we establish correspondence between DBI-essence and modified Chaplygin gas (MCG) and hence reconstruct the potential and warped brane tension. By this reconstruction, we observe that DBI scalar field and potential increase and warped brane tension decreases during evolution of the Universe. …
The beta function formalism is being used to study the constant-roll inflation in the k-essence model. Assuming the second slow-roll parameter as a constant leads to a first-order differential equation for $β$-function which is much easier to solve and find a solution than the second (non-linear) order equation that we have in corresponding standard constant-roll inflation. Many cosmological models are known as a subclass of k-essence, so we will try to consider the model as general as possible. It is determined that the second slow-roll parameter should be positive to produce a small value fo…
Thermodynamic properties of dark energy are discussed assuming that dark energy is described in terms of a selfinteracting complex scalar. We first show that, under certain assumptions, selfinteracting complex scalar field theories are equivalent to purely kinetic k-essence models. Then we analyze the themal properties of k-essence and in particular we show that dark-energy in the phantom regime does not necessarily yield negative entropy.
We construct new black brane solutions in the context of Horndeski gravity, in particular in its K-essence sector. These models are supported by axion scalar fields that depend only on the horizon coordinates. The dynamics of these fields is determined by a K-essence term that includes the standard kinetic term $X$ and a correction of the form $X^{k}$. We find both neutral and charged exact and analytic solutions in $D$-dimensions, which are asymptotically anti de Sitter. Then, we describe in detail the thermodynamical properties of the four-dimensional solutions and we compute the dual hologr…
In this paper, we investigated inflationary solutions for a subclass of Horndeski models where a scalar field is non-minimally coupled with the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. Examples of canonical scalar field and $k$-essence to support the early-time acceleration are considered. The formalism to calculate the perturbations in FRW universe and to derive the spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio is furnished.
From a spacetime perspective, the dynamics of magnetic field lines of force-free electromagnetic fields can be rewritten into a quite similar form for the dynamics of strings, i.e., dynamics of "field sheets". Using this formalism, we explicitly show that the field sheets of stationary and axisymmetric force-free electromagnetic fields have identical intrinsic properties to the world sheets of rigidly rotating Nambu-Goto strings. Thus, we conclude that the Blandford-Znajek process is kinematically identical to an energy-extraction mechanism by the Nambu-Goto string with an effective magnetic t…
We define a generalization of scalar fields with non-canonical kinetic term which we call exotic k-essence or briefly, exotik. These fields are generated by the global description of cosmological models with two interactive fluids in the dark sector and under certain conditions, they correspond to usual k-essences. The formalism is applied to the cases of constant potential and of inverse square potential and also we develop the purely exotik version for the modified holographic Ricci type of dark energy (MHR), where the equations of state are not constant. With the kinetic function $F=1+mx$ a…
We make a scalar representation of interactive models with cold dark matter and modified holographic Ricci dark energy through unified models driven by scalar fields with non-canonical kinetic term. These models are applications of the formalism of exotic k-essences generated by the global description of cosmological models with two interactive fluids in the dark sector and in these cases they correspond to usual k-essences. The formalism is applied to the cases of constant potential in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker geometries.
We have studied the reconstruction formalism of the DBI-essence dark energy scalar field model with the help of non-metricity of gravity or f(Q) gravity. The critical analysis has been done on the reconstructed model. The Black hole and Wormhole mass accretions have been studied with this reconstructed model. We have analyzed the validities of thermodynamic energy conditions. In our reconstructed model, we have assumed four types of singularity resolutions of scale factor and investigated the black hole and wormhole masses due to accretion of reconstructed dark energy. Diagrammatically, we hav…
The thermodynamical properties of a dipole black ring are derived using the quasilocal formalism. We find that the dipole charge appears in the first law in the same manner as a global charge. Using the Gibbs-Duhem relation, we also provide a non-trivial check of the entropy/area relationship for the dipole ring. A preliminary study of the thermodynamic stability indicates that the neutral ring is unstable to angular fluctuations.
This paper investigates a newly proposed fluid description of dark energy within the framework of the late-time accelerated expansion of the universe. Our primary objective is to explore the theoretical foundation of the proposed equation of state by establishing its correspondence with well-known scalar field models such as quintessence, k-essence, and DBI-essence. Through this correspondence, we reconstruct key field parameters, including the scalar field $ϕ$ and scalar potential $V(ϕ)$, and analyze their evolutionary behavior across cosmic time. The study also evaluates the model's physical…
We investigate thermodynamics of the apparent horizon in $f(R)$ gravity in the Palatini formalism with non-equilibrium and equilibrium descriptions. We demonstrate that it is more transparent to understand the horizon entropy in the equilibrium framework than that in the non-equilibrium one. Furthermore, we show that the second law of thermodynamics can be explicitly verified in both phantom and non-phantom phases for the same temperature of the universe outside and inside the apparent horizon.
We determine the most general scalar field theories which have an action that depends on derivatives of order two or less, and have equations of motion that stay second order and lower on flat space-time. We show that those theories can all be obtained from linear combinations of Lagrangians made by multiplying a particular form of the Galileon Lagrangian by an arbitrary scalar function of the scalar field and its first derivatives. We also obtain curved space-time extensions of those theories which have second order field equations for both the metric and the scalar field. This provide the mo…
A new formalism for thermodynamics of AdS black holes called the {\em restricted phase space thermodynamics} (RPST) is proposed. The construction is based on top of Visser's holographic thermodynamics, but with the AdS radius fixed as a constant. Thus the RPST is free of the $(P,V)$ variables but inherits the central charge and chemical potential as a new pair of conjugate thermodynamic variables. In this formalism, the Euler relation and the Gibbs-Duhem equation hold simultaneously with the first law of black hole thermodynamics, which guarantee the appropriate homogeneous behaviors for the b…
The thermodynamics of the BTZ black holes are revisited with variable Newton constant. A new pair of conjugated variables, the central charge $C$ and the chemical potential $μ$, is introduced as thermodynamic variables. The first law of thermodynamics and the Euler relation, instead of the Smarr relation in the extended phase space formalism, are matched perfectly in this formalism. Compatible with standard extensive thermodynamics, the black hole mass is verified to be a first order homogeneous function of the related extensive variables, and restores the role of internal energy. In addition,…
In this paper, we present an analysis of a chiral cosmological scenario from the perspective of K-essence formalism. In this setup, several scalar fields interact within the kinetic and potential sectors. However, we only consider a flat Friedmann--Robertson--Lama\^ıtre--Walker universe coupled minimally to two quintom fields: one quintessence and one phantom. We examine a classical cosmological framework, where analytical solutions are obtained. Indeed, we present an explanation of the ``big-bang'' singularity by means of a ``big-bounce''. Moreover, having a barotropic fluid description and f…
Inspired by the recent studies on the thermodynamics of AdS black holes in the restricted phase space formalism, we propose a similar formalism for the thermodynamics of non-AdS black holes with variable Newton constant. It is shown that, by introducing the new variables $N,μ$, where $N$ is proportional to the inverse Newton constant and $μ$ its conjugate variable, referred to as the chemical potential, the black hole thermodynamics can be formulated in a form which is consistent with the standard extensive thermodynamics for open macroscopic systems, with the first law and the Euler relation …
We determine the k-essence Lagrangian of a relativistic barotropic fluid. The equation of state of the fluid can be specified in different manners depending on whether the pressure is expressed in terms of the energy density (model I), the rest-mass density (model II), or the pseudo rest-mass density for a complex scalar field in the Thomas-Fermi approximation (model III). In the nonrelativistic limit, these three formulations coincide. In the relativistic regime, they lead to different models that we study exhaustively. We provide general results valid for an arbitrary equation of state and s…

The tunneling formalism in the Hamilton-Jacobi approach is adopted to study Hawking radiation of massless Dirac particles from spherically symmetric black hole spacetimes incorporating the effects of the generalized uncertainty principle. The Hawking temperature is found to contain corrections from the generalized uncertainty principle. Further, we show from this result that the ratio of the GUP corrected energy of the particle to the GUP corrected Hawking temperature is equal to the ratio of the corresponding uncorrected quantities. This result is then exploited to compute the Hawking tempera…
We show that classical thermodynamics has a formulation in terms of Hamilton-Jacobi theory, analogous to mechanics. Even though the thermodynamic variables come in conjugate pairs such as pressure/volume or temperature/entropy, the phase space is odd-dimensional. For a system with n thermodynamic degrees of freedom it is (2n+1)-dimensional. The equations of state of a substance pick out an n-dimensional submanifold. A family of substances whose equations of state depend on n parameters define a hypersurface of co-dimension one. This can be described by the vanishing of a function which plays t…
In this letter, we first redefine our formalism of the thermodynamic geometry introduced in [1,2] by changing coordinates of the thermodynamic space by means of Jacobian matrices. We then show that the geometrothermodynamics (GTD) is conformally related to this new formalism of the thermodynamic geometry. This conformal transformation is singular at unphysical points were generated in GTD metric. Therefore, working with our metric neatly excludes all unphysical points without imposing any constraints.
