Using the variational method, it is shown that the set of all strong peak functions in a closed algebra $A$ of $C_b(K)$ is dense if and only if the set of all strong peak points is a norming subset of $A$. As a corollary we can induce the denseness of strong peak functions on other certain spaces. In case that a set of uniformly strongly exposed points of a Banach space $X$ is a norming subset of $\mathcal{P}({}^n X)$, then the set of all strongly norm attaining elements in $\mathcal{P}({}^n X)$ is dense. In particular, the set of all points at which the norm of $\mathcal{P}({}^n X)$ is Fréchet differentiable is a dense $G_δ$ subset.
In the last part, using Reisner's graph theoretic-approach, we construct some strongly norm attaining polynomials on a CL-space with an absolute norm. Then we show that for a finite dimensional complex Banach space $X$ with an absolute norm, its polynomial numerical indices are one if and only if $X$ is isometric to $\ell_\infty^n$. Moreover, we give a characterization of the set of all complex extreme points of the unit ball of a CL-space with an absolute norm.
Let $H_1,H_2$ be complex Hilbert spaces and $T$ be a densely defined closed linear operator (not necessarily bounded). It is proved that for each $ε>0$, there exists a bounded operator $S$ with $\|S\|\leq ε$ such that $T+S$ is minimum attaining. Further, if $T$ is bounded below, then $S$ can be chosen to be rank one.
We characterize real Banach spaces $Y$ such that the pair $(\ell_\infty ^n, Y)$ has the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for operators. To this purpose it is essential the use of an appropriate basis of the domain space $\R^n$. As a consequence of the mentioned characterization, we provide examples of spaces $Y$ satisfying such property. For instance, finite-dimensional spaces, uniformly convex spaces, uniform algebras and $L_1(μ)$ ($μ$ a positive measure) satisfy the previous property.
Inspired by the recent work of Cascales et al., we introduce a generalized concept of ACK structure on Banach spaces. Using this property, which we call by the quasi-ACK structure, we are able to extend known universal properties on range spaces concerning the density of norm attaining operators. We provide sufficient conditions for quasi-ACK structure of spaces and results on the stability of quasi-ACK structure. As a consequence, we present new examples satisfying the (Lindenstrauss) property B$^k$, which have not been known previously. We also prove that property B$^k$ is stable under injec…
We introduce a weakened notion of norm attainment for bounded linear operators between Banach spaces which we call \emph{quasi norm attaining operators}. An operator $T\colon X \longrightarrow Y$ between the Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ is quasi norm attaining if there is a sequence $(x_n)$ of norm one elements in $X$ such that $(Tx_n)$ converges to some $u\in Y$ with $\|u\|=\|T\|$. Norm attaining operators in the usual sense (i.e.\ operators for which there is a point in the unit ball where the norm of its image equals the norm of the operator) and compact operators satisfy this definition. The …
Very recently, motivated by the result of Bhatia and Šemrl which characterizes the Birkhoff-James orthogonality of operators on a finite dimensional Hilbert space in terms of norm attaining points, the Bhatia-Šemrl property was introduced. The main purpose of this article is to study the denseness of the set of multilinear maps with the Bhatia-Šemrl property which is contained in the set of norm attaining ones. Contrary to the most of previous results which were shown for operators on real Banach spaces, we prove the denseness for multilinear maps on some complex Banach spaces. We also show th…
We study the relationship between the residuality of the set of norm attaining functionals on a Banach space and the residuality and the denseness of the set of norm attaining operators between Banach spaces. Our first main result says that if $C$ is a bounded subset of a Banach space $X$ which admit an LUR renorming satisfying that, for every Banach space $Y$, the operators $T$ from $X$ to $Y$ for which the supremum of $\|Tx\|$ with $x\in C$ is attained are dense, then the $G_δ$ set of those functionals which strongly exposes $C$ is dense in $X^*$. This extends previous results by J.\ Bourgai…
We prove that if every bounded linear operator (or $N$-homogeneous polynomials) with the compact approximation property attains its numerical radius, then $X$ is a finite dimensional space. Moreover, we present an improvement of the polynomial James' theorem for numerical radius proved by Acosta, Becerra Guerrero and Gal$á$n in 2003. Finally, the denseness of weakly (uniformly) continuous $2$-homogeneous polynomials on a Banach space whose Aron-Berner extensions attain their numerical radii is obtained.
We extend the recent result of G. Godefroy which concerns the existence of non-norm attaining Lipschitz maps in order to characterize the norm attainment toward vectors for Lipschitz maps in the general setting of underlying space. The main theorem of the present paper states that the existence of non-norm attaining Lipschitz maps toward vectors on a large class of metric spaces is characterized by the finite-dimensionality of range space. As an extension of his counterexample, some denseness results on norm attaining Lipschitz maps toward vectors are also shown.
We study holomorphic functions attaining weighted norms and its connections with the classical theory of norm attaining holomorphic functions. We prove that there are polynomials on $\ell_p$ which attain their weighted but not their supremum norm and viceversa. Nevertheless, we also prove that in the context of polynomials of fixed degree both norms are in fact equivalent. This leads us to the main problem of the paper, namely, whether the holomorphic functions attaining their weighted norm are dense. Although we exhibit an example where this does not hold, as the main theorem of our paper, we…
We show that the duals of Banach algebras of scalar-valued bounded holomorphic functions on the open unit ball $B_E$ of a Banach space $E$ lack weak$^*$-strongly exposed points. Consequently, we obtain that some Banach algebras of holomorphic functions on an arbitrary Banach space have the Daugavet property which extends the observation of P. Wojtaszczyk. Moreover, we present a new denseness result by proving that the set of norm-attaining vector-valued holomorphic functions on the open unit ball of a dual Banach space is dense provided that its predual space has the metric $π$-property. Besid…
Let $C_b(K)$ be the set of all bounded continuous (real or complex) functions on a complete metric space $K$ and $A$ a closed subspace of $C_b(K)$. Using the variational method, it is shown that the set of all strong peak functions in $A$ is dense if and only if the set of all strong peak points is a norming subset of $A$. As a corollary we show that if $X$ is a locally uniformly convex, complex Banach space, then the set of all strong peak functions in $\mathcal{A}(B_X)$ is a dense $G_δ$ subset. Moreover if $X$ is separable, smooth and locally uniformly convex, then the set of all norm and nu…
We classify several notions of norm attaining Lipschitz maps which were introduced previously, and present the relations among them in order to verify proper inclusions. We also analyze some results for the sets of Lipschitz maps satisfying each of these properties to be dense or not in $\Lip(X,Y)$. For instance, we characterize a Banach space $Y$ with the Radon-Nikodým property in terms of the denseness of norm attaining Lipschitz maps with values in $Y$. Further, we introduce a property called the local directional Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for Lipschitz compact maps, which extends the…
We provide some new consequences on the Lipschitz numerical radius and index which were introduced recently. More precisely, we give some renorming results on the Lipschitz numerical index, introduce a concept of Lipschitz numerical radius attaining functions in order to show that the denseness fails for an arbitrary Banach space, and study a Lipschitz version of Daugavet centers. Furthermore, we discuss the Lipschitz numerical index of vector-valued function spaces, absolute sums of Banach spaces, the Köthe-Bochner spaces, and Banach spaces which contain a dense union of increasing family of …
In this paper, we are interested in studying two properties related to the denseness of the operators which attain their numerical radius: the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás point and operator properties for numerical radius (BPBpp-nu and BPBop-nu, respectively). We prove that every Banach space with micro-transitive norm and second numerical index strictly positive satisfy the BPBpp-nu and that, if the numerical index of $X$ is 1, only one-dimensional spaces enjoy it. On the other hand, we show that the BPBop-nu is a very restrictive property: under some general assumptions, it holds only for one-dim…
Let $K$ be a Hausdorff space and $C_b(K)$ be the Banach algebra of all complex bounded continuous functions on $K$. We study the Gâteaux and Fréchet differentiability of subspaces of $C_b(K)$. Using this, we show that the set of all strong peak functions in a nontrivial separating separable subspace $H$ of $C_b(K)$ is a dense $G_δ$ subset of $H$, if $K$ is compact. This gives a generalized Bishop's theorem, which says that the closure of the set of strong peak point for $H$ is the smallest closed norming subset of $H$. The classical Bishop's theorem was proved for a separating subalgebra $H$ a…
