We develop the structure theory of full isometry groups of locally compact non-positively curved metric spaces. Amongst the discussed themes are de Rham decompositions, normal subgroup structure and characterising properties of symmetric spaces and Bruhat--Tits buildings. Applications to discrete groups and further developments on non-positively curved lattices are exposed in a companion paper: "Isometry groups of non-positively curved spaces: discrete subgroups".
We amend the statement of point~(i) in Theorem~1.3 in arxiv:0901.1022 and supply the additional arguments and minor changes for the results that depend on it. We also seize the occasion and generalize to non-finitely generated lattices.

We define an integer-valued invariant of special cube complexes called the genus, and prove that having genus one characterizes special cube complexes with abelian fundamental group. This paper concerns a study of three families of non-compact type symmetric spaces of infinite dimension. Although they have infinite dimension they have finite rank. More precisely, we show they have finite telescopic dimension. We also show the existence of Furstenberg maps for some group actions on these spaces. Such maps appear as a first step toward superrigidity results.
We recast the notion of joint spectral radius in the setting of groups acting by isometries on non-positively curved spaces and give geometric versions of results of Berger-Wang and Bochi valid for $δ$-hyperbolic spaces and for symmetric spaces of non-compact type. This method produces nice hyperbolic elements in many classical geometric settings. Applications to uniform growth are given, in particular a new proof and a generalization of a theorem of Besson-Courtois-Gallot.

We study isometric actions of Steinberg groups on Hadamard manifolds. We prove some rigidity properties related to these actions. In Particular we show that every isometric action of $St_n(F_p\langle t_1,\ldots ,t_k \rangle)$ on Hadamard manifold when $n \geq 3$ is finite. We further study actions on infinite dimensional manifolds and prove a fixed point theorem related to such actions.

We prove a combination theorem for hyperbolic groups, in the case of groups acting on complexes displaying combinatorial features reminiscent of non-positive curvature. Such complexes include for instance weakly systolic complexes and C'(1/6) small cancellation polygonal complexes. In this article we give an explicit algorithm which will determine, in a discrete and computable way, whether a finite piecewise Euclidean complex is non-positively curved.
