It has been suggested that the temporal oscillations in the rate of decay of Pr ions reported in the GSI K-capture experiment arise from interference between different values of the momentum of the Pr ions. It is shown here that any such interference cannot contribute to the decay rate of those ions.
We find that in the nonmanifest left-right (LR) model, an important LR mixing effect was not considered in the paper by E. Golowich, S. Pakvasa, and A. Petrov, Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 181801 (2007).
The importance of exchange currents, and of conserving isotopic spin at both the quark and baryon levels in application of the chiral quark model to any calculation of baryon magnetic moments is emphasized.
We present some considerations in connection with the paper arXiv:1004.2980 [hep-ph] and give a response to the criticism of the quasipotential approach in our relativistic quark model.
Within the standard electroweak model we point out that the $3\times 3$ matrix of quark mixing is characterized by three universal (rephasing-invariant) quantities: one of them for $CP$ violation and the other two for off-diagonal asymmetries. Unitarity of the quark mixing matrix can in principle be tested through a variety of measurements which are irrelevant to the existence of $CP$-violating effects.
We show in a simple and general way that matter effects do not contribute to the averaged value of the probabilities of transition of solar $ν_e$'s into other states in the case of maximal mixing of any number of massive neutrinos. We also show that future solar neutrino experiments (Super-Kamiokande and SNO) will allow to test the model with maximal mixing of three massive neutrinos in a way that does not depend on the initial solar neutrino flux.
I discuss some problems connected with the high precision study of neutrino oscillations. In the general case of $n$-neutrino mixing I derive a convenient expression for transition probability in which only independent terms (and mass-squared differences) enter. For three-neutrino mixing I discuss a problem of a definition of a large (atmospheric) neutrino mass-squared difference. I comment also possibilities to reveal the character of neutrino mass spectrum in future reactor neutrino experiments.
Since right-handed neutrinos, if added to the Standard Model, have no gauge interactions, their kinetic terms can be mixed. I examine the related rotations of the gauge eigenstates in order to derive the propagators for the kinetic and mass terms, and I comment on the resulting lepton mixing, on the possibility of not having well-defined mass eigenstates, and on the modifications to weak contributions and observables (anomalous magnetic moment, muon decay, neutrino oscillations).
We propose studying the mechanism of factorization in exclusive decays of the form B->D(*)X by examining the differential decay rate as a function of the invariant mass of the light hadronic state X. If factorization works primarily due to the large N_c limit then its accuracy is not expected to decrease as the X invariant mass increases. However, if factorization is mostly a consequence of perturbative QCD then the corrections should grow with the X invariant mass. Combining data for hadronic tau decays and semileptonic B decays allows tests of factorization to be made for a variety of final …
It has been suggested that the reported temporal oscillations in the weak decay of H-like ions circulating in the GSI storage ring may be accounted for by interference between two different momentum components of the wave function of the parent ions. In that model, the interference is said to come about through coupling of those two momentum components to the two mass components in the wave function of the electron neutrino in the decayed state. I show here that quantum mechanics allows no such interference to contribute to the reported oscillation of the decay rate. The central issue is that …
In the extension of the Dimopoulos--Hall--Raby model of the fermion mass matrices to the neutrino sector, there is an entry in the up-quark and neutrino Dirac mass matrices which can be assumed to arise from the Yukawa coupling of a {\bf 120}, instead of a {\bf 10} or a {\bf 126}, of SO(10). Although this assumption leads to an extra undetermined complex parameter in the model, the resulting lepton mixing matrix exhibits the remarkable feature that the $ ν_τ $ does not mix with the other two neutrinos. Making a reasonable assumption about the extra parameter, we are able to fit the large-mixin…
It is shown, that the correlators of vector and axial-vector currents at finite temperature T in order T^2 reduce to mixing of vacuum VV and AA correlators with universal mixing coefficient given by the parameter ε= T^2/6 F^2_π, unlike the claim in the recent paper by Mallik and Sarkar [1].
Using the family symmetry, in the neutrino mass matrix we remove the Yukawa coupling (arising in the Dirac type mass between the heavy neutrinos and light lepton doublets) dependence in the double seesaw mechanism so that it is directly proportional to the mass matrix $m^{(nn)}$ of heavy Majorana neutrinos. The family symmetry is supposed to be broken spontaneously at high energy scale so that the neutrino mass matrix is given by the family symmetry at high energy scale. With the permutation symmetry $S_3$, we note a variety of possible mass hierarchies arising distinctly in neutrinos, charged…
We investigate the implications of a possible excess of the electron neutrino events in the Super-Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino experiment. The excess, if real, leads to constraints on the $ν_μ\leftrightarrow ν_e$, $ν_μ\leftrightarrow ν_τ$ and $ν_e \leftrightarrow ν_τ$ oscillation parameters. Specifically, the excess impies that $ν_e - ν_μ$ and $ν_μ- ν_τ$ mixings are large and $ν_e - ν_τ$ mixing is small. We show that the electron neutrino excess favors the large mixing angle MSW solution of the solar neutrino problem.
This is a reply to the preprint "On Neutrino-Mixing-Generated Lepton Asymmetry and the Primordial Helium-4 Abundance" by M. V. Chizhov and D. P. Kirilova (hep-ph/9908525), which criticised our recent publication (X. Shi, G. M. Fuller and K. Abazajian Phys. Rev. D 60, 063002 (1999)). Here we point out factual errors in their description of what our paper says. We also show that their criticisms of our work have no merit.
Three different strategies to extract the weak mixing phase phi_s of the Bs system using B--> VV decays (Bs--> K* anti-K*, Bs--> phi anti-K* and Bs--> phi phi) are discussed. Those penguin-mediated decays are computed in the framework of a new combined QCD-Factorisation/Flavour Symmetry Method. Also some comments on the recent interesting results found by Babar concerning the decay B--> K* l+l- are included.
In the paper "Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and Active-Sterile Neutrino Mixing: Evidence for Maximal Muon-Neutrino/Sterile-Neutrino Mixing in Super Kamiokande" (astro-ph/9810075), we suggested that to evade the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis exclusion of the muon neutrino to sterile neutrino oscillation explanation of the Super Kamiokande data, the tau neutrino must have a mass over about 15 eV and it must mix with a lighter sterile neutrino. A stable tau neutrino with this mass is inconsistent with cosmological structure formation. In a comment on our paper (astro-ph/9811067), Foot and Volkas argued tha…
It is pointed out that if a flavor symmetry (a discrete symmetry, a U(1) symmetry, and so on) exists, we cannot obtain the observed CKM quark mixing matrix V_q and MNS lepton mixing matrix U_\ell, even if we can obtain reasonable mass spectra under the symmetry. Such the serious constraint is derived only from the SU(2)_L conditions, and we will not assume any explicit flavor symmetry and/or any explicit mass matrix forms. And then, we will discuss the meaning of the severe constraint.
It is shown that neutrino mixing cannot explain the GSI time anomaly, refuting recent claims in this direction. Addendum 1: Remarks on arXiv:0801.1465. Addendum 2: Quantum effects in GSI nuclear decay.
In this Reply, we respond to the above Comment. Our computation [Phys. Rev. D 91 (2015) 074512] only took into account pure QCD effects, arising from quark mass differences, so it is not surprising that there are discrepancies in isospin splittings and in the Sigma - Lambda mixing angle. We expect that these discrepancies will be smaller in a full calculation incorporating QED effects.
We comment on the exponential parameterization of the quark mixing matrix, by stressing that it naturally incorporates the Cabibbo structure and the hierarchical features of the Wolfenstein form. We extend our results to the neutrino mixing and introduce an exponential generator of the tribimaximal matrix.
The key assumption used recently by Feldmann, Kroll and Stich [Phys.Rev. D58, 114006 (1998)] that the decay constants f_η, and f_η' of the respective eta and eta ' mesons in the quark flavor basis follow the pattern of strange and non--strange quarkonia mixing in their wave functions, is reproduced in identifying the non-isotriplet part of the strong neutral axial current with the genuine axial hypercharge current J_{μ, 5}^Y =\bar q γ_μγ_5 Y/2 q, where Y=C+S+B is defined by the Gell-Mann-Nakano-Nishijima relation as the sum of charm (C), strangeness (S), and baryon (B) quark quantum numbers. The paper "Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and Active-Sterile Neutrino Mixing: Evidence for Maximal $ν_μ\leftrightarrow ν_τ$ Mixing in Super Kamiokande?" by X. Shi and G. M. Fuller (astro-ph/9810075) discusses the cosmological implications of the $ν_μ\to ν_s$ solution to the atmospheric neutrino anomaly. It incorrectly concludes that a lower bound on the $ν_τ$ mass of 15 eV is needed in order for the $ν_μ\to ν_s$ oscillations to be consistent with a Big Bang Nucleosynthesis upper bound on the effective number of flavours of 3.3. Since such a large $ν_τ$ mass is disfavoured from large scale structure …
A recent lattice QCD (LQCD) calculation of $Σ$-$Λ$ mixing by the QCDSF-UKQCD Collaboration [Phys. Rev. D 91, 074512 (2015)] finds a mixing angle about half of that found from the Dalitz-von Hippel (DvH) flavor SU(3) mass formula which relates the $Σ$-$Λ$ mixing matrix element to known octet baryon mass differences and which has been used widely to evaluate charge symmetry breaking effects in $Λ$ hypernuclei. We show that the LQCD-calculated $Σ$-$Λ$ mixing matrix element and octet baryon masses satisfy the DvH mass formula, concluding thereby that a good LQCD evaluation of $Σ$-$Λ$ mixing requir…
Neutrino masses and mixing can be investigated by studying the behavior of a radioactive bare nucleus which decays by emitting an electron into the open atomic K shell BEFORE and DURING its weak decay by neutrino emission. The initial nuclear state has a momentum spread required by Heisenberg. The wave packet contains pairs of components with different momenta which can produce neutrinos in two mass eigenstates with exactly the same energy and different momenta. These neutrino amplitudes mix to produce a single electron-neutrino state with the same energy. Since there is no information on whic…
Comments on "Unified neutrino mixing and approximate $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry" (Mod. Phys. Lett. A, 40 (2025) 26, 2550097 [arXiv:2502.18029 [hep-ph]])

The evidence for $ν_μ$ disappearance in the Super-Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino experiment and the negative searches for $ν_e$ disappearance in the CHOOZ reactor experiment can be easily reconciled by assuming oscillations with large amplitude in the $ν_μ\leftrightarrowν_τ$ channel and small (or null) amplitude in the $ν_μ\leftrightarrowν_e$ channel. It has been claimed, however, that some oscillation scenarios with large $ν_μ\leftrightarrowν_e$ mixing can also be constructed in agreement with the present data. We investigate quantitatively two such scenarios: (a) threefold maximal mixing; a…
We discuss the propagation and the flavour mixing of neutrinos in the context of the Quantum Field Theory. We propose an exact parametrization of the neutrino mixing matrix and its transformation in a simpler form which accounts for a small $ν_e - ν_μ$ and a large $ν_μ- ν_τ$ mixing. Finally, we comment the differences between the charged quark and neutral lepton sector and consider the physical situations that require this approach.
Isospin analysis has been used to constrain the CP-asymmetries in B -> pi pi decays. In particular correlation between a weak phase θand a strong phase δis obtained. Further using the experimental values for the CP-average branching ratios, the following bounds on direct CP-asymmetries are obtained: -0.35+/- 0.22=< C_{π^+π^-}\leq 0; C_{π^0π^0}=-(2.4\pm 1.0) C_{π^+π^-}. Constraints on mixing induced CP-asymmetries are also discussed.
We study the complementarity between quark and lepton mixing angles (QLC), the sum of an angle in quark mixing and the corresponding angle in lepton mixing is $π/4$. Experimentally in the standard PDG parametrization, two such relations exist approximately. These QLC relations are accidental which only manifest themselves in the PDG parametrization. We propose reparametrization invariant expressions for the complementarity relations in terms of the magnitude of the elements in the quark and lepton mixing matrices. In the exact QLC limit, it is found that $|V_{us}/V_{ud}| + |V_{e2}/V_{e1}| + |V…
In recent Letter by An et al. [arXiv:1203.1669] Daya Bay measurements of non-zero value for the neutrino mixing angle θ_{13} with a significance of 5.2 standard deviations were reported. The value of sin^2 θ_{13} was determined with a χ^2 constructed with pull terms accounting for the correlation of the systematic errors. We show that a direct applying of the KamLAND parameters of mixing to Daya Bay-experiment under nonequilibrium geoneutrino spectrum of the nuclear burning process within the framework of nonzero nuclear georeactor χ^2 -hypothesis will produce a high uncertainty level and, as …
We calculate the rate for $D_s^* \rightarrow D_s π^0$ decay using Chiral Perturbation Theory. This isospin violating process results from $π^0$ - $η$ mixing, and its amplitude is proportional to $(m_d - m_u)/\bigl(m_s-(m_u+m_d)/2 \bigr)$. Experimental information on the branching ratio for $D_s^* \rightarrow D_s π^0$ can provide insight into the pattern of $SU(3)$ violation in radiative $D^*$ decays.
We suggest a minimal extension of the simplest A4 flavour model that can induce a nonzero theta13 value, as required by recent neutrino oscillation data from reactors and accelerators. The predicted correlation between the atmospheric mixing angle theta23 and the magnitude of theta13 leads to an allowed region substantially smaller than indicated by neutrino oscillation global fits. Moreover, the scheme correlates CP violation in neutrino oscillations with the octant of the atmospheric mixing parameter theta23 in such a way that, for example, maximal mixing necessarily violates CP. We briefly …
Comment on "Neutrino oscillations originate from virtual excitation of $Z$ bosons" and "Neutrinos produced from $β$ decays of neutrons cannot be in coherent superpositions of different mass eigenstates"
I review the status of neutrino masses and mixings in the light of the solar and atmospheric neutrino data. The result from the LSND experiment and the possible role of neutrinos as hot dark matter are also included. I also discuss the simplest schemes proposed to reconcile these data which include a light sterile neutrino in addition to the three standard ones. Implications for future experiments are commented.
I point out that the sterile neutrinos suggested as candidates of "cool" Dark Matter will decay through their mixing with light neutrinos. This leads to an upper bound of about 200 keV on the mass of the sterile neutrinos, but might facilitate their detection.
We propose an explanation of the new resonances observed in $D_s^{(*)+} π^0$ decays. We suggest that the data can be explained by the mixing of conventional p-wave excited $D_s^+$ mesons with 4-quark states. The narrow states observed in $D_s^+ π^0$ and $D_s^{*+}π^0$ are primarily p-wave $D_{sJ}^{*}$ states, while the predominantly 4-quark states are shifted above $D^{(*)} K$ threshold and should be broad. Ranges for the mixing parameter and mass of the 4-quark state in this scenario are given. Other experimental consequences are discussed.
Recently, many authors showed that if the solar and atmospheric neutrino data are both described by maximal mixing vacuum oscillations at the relevant mass scale, then there exists a unique bi-maximal lepton mixing matrix for three neutrino flavors. We construct the lepton mass matrices from the symmetry principle so that maximal mixings for the atmospheric and the solar neutrino vacuum oscillations are naturally generated. Although the hierarchical patterns of the lepton sector are quite different from each other, we show how two different mass matrices suggested in this work can be generated…
The compelling experimental evidences for oscillations of solar, atmospheric and reactor neutrinos imply the existence of 3-neutrino mixing in vacuum. We review the phenomenology of 3-neutrino mixing, and the current data on the 3-neutrino mixing parameters. The opened questions and the main goals of future research in the field of neutrino mixing and oscillations are outlined. A phenomenological approach for understanding the pattern of neutrino mixing as an interplay between the mixing, arising from the charged lepton sector, and bimaximal mixing, arising from a neutrino Majorana mass matrix…
We give comments on the recent paper by Giunti (Phys. Lett. B 665, 92 (2008), arXiv: 0805.0431 [hep-ph]) with a critique of our explanation of the experimentally observed periodic time-dependence of the interference term in the rate of the K-shell electron capture decay of the H-like ions 140Pr58+ and 142Pm60+ as a two-neutrino-flavour mixing. We show also that this phenomenon cannot be explained by a coherent mixing of two states of a mother ion as proposed by Giunti.
A mechanism of radiatively generating neutrino masses is implemented in an SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y x SU(2)'_L x U(1)'_Y model, where the first and second families respect SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y while SU(2)'_L x U(1)'_Y is specific for the third family. The fourth neutrino, nu_s, that has a U(1)_Y x U(1)'_Y coupling joins in the model to induce neutrino mixings by additional interactions with e and mu. The phenomenologically consistent oscillation of nu_s - nu_e requires a dominated coupling of nu_s to e.
We demonstrate that in the process of deducing the constraint on the electroweak mixing angle $θ_{W}$ in our paper, we have indeed been working with three mass scales while implementing (331) model.
It has been recently suggested in hep-ph/9911535 and hep-ph/0006324 that the fourth generation of leptons and quarks is not excluded by the precision Z-boson measurements, provided that the mass of the fourth neutrino is around 50 GeV and that its mixing with the neutrinos of the first three generations is negligibly small. We would like to note that in this case the decay rate of the Standard Model Higgs boson into the pair of such neutrinos would be about two orders of magnitude higher than than the Higgs to b-bbar rate. Thus, the predominant decay mode of the Higgs would be invisible, which…
We consider the possibilities of studying a supernova collapse neutrino burst at Baksan Neutrino Observatory (Institute for Nuclear Research, Russian Academy of Sciences) using the prposed 5-kt target-mass liquid scintillation spectrometer. Attention is given to the influence of mixing angle $θ_{13}$ on the expected rates and spectra of neutrino events.
We analyse a simple RPV extension of the MSSM, with bilinear R-parity violation in the soft terms and vevs, but not between the terms in the superpotential. The model gives two massive neutrinos, and can fit all constraints from neutrino data. We show analytically how to compute the lepton number violating Lagrangian parameters from neutrino masses and mixing angles. Conversely, we numerically vary the bilinear couplings as input parameters to determine the allowed ranges that are consistent with neutrino data. We briefly comment on the implications of our bounds for low energy LFV processes.
In the Randall-Sundrum (RS) compactification, the gap between two branes is stabilized by the vacuum expectation value of a scalar field called {\it radion}, $ϕ$. This radion behaves like a weak interaction singlet scalar field, coupling to matter through the trace of the energy momentum tensor. We find that it can induce a sizable correction to the weak mixing angle if the vacuum expectation value and the mass of the radion is around TeV. We also comment on the contribution to the $K_L-K_S$ mass difference and to $(g-2)_μ$.
We discuss the physics potential of future tritium beta-decay experiments having a sensitivity to a neutrino mass ~\sqrt{|Δm^{2}_{23}|}~5x10^{-2} eV. The case of three-neutrino mixing is analised. A negative result of such an experiment would imply that the neutrino mass spectrum is of normal hierarchical type. The interpretation of a positive result would depend on the value of the lightest neutrino mass; if the lightest neutrino mass satisfies the inequality min(m_j) << \sqrt{|Δm^{2}_{23}|}, it would imply that the neutrino mass spectrum is of the inverted hierarchical type.
Discrete non-Abelian Symmetries have been extensively used to reproduce the lepton mixings. In particular, the S4 group turned out to be suitable to describe predictive mixing patterns, such as the well-known Tri-Bimaximal and the Bimaximal schemes, which all represent possible first approximations of the experimental lepton mixing matrix. We review the main application of the S4 discrete group as a flavour symmetry, first dealing with the formalism and later with the phenomenological implications. In particular, we summarize the main features of flavour models based on S4, commenting on their…
I comment on the proposal that the stability of dark matter may be due to an unbroken Z_2 symmetry contained in the partially broken lepton flavour symmetry group. I remark that (1) there is no Z_2 symmetry apparent in the lepton mass spectrum and in lepton mixing, (2) predictive models of this type may be constructed by using a lepton flavour symmetry group with three inequivalent singlets, to which the three left-handed-lepton gauge-SU(2) doublets are assigned, and (3) some predictions for the lepton masses and mixings are likely to be altered by radiative contributions to the neutrino mass …
We present an analytic study of the dispersion relation for an isotropic magnetized plasma interacting with axions. We provide a quantitative picture of the electromagnetic plasma oscillations in both the ultrarelativistic and nonrelativistic regimes and considering both non-degenerate and degenerate media, accounting for the dispersion curves as a function of the plasma temperature and the ratio of the plasma phase velocity to the characteristic velocity of particles. We include the modifications on the Landau damping of plasma waves induced by the presence of the axion field, and we comment …
We study lepton mixing patterns which are derived from finite modular groups Gamma_N, requiring subgroups G_nu and G_e to be preserved in the neutrino and charged lepton sectors, respectively. We show that only six groups Gamma_N with N=3,4,5,7,8,16 are relevant. A comprehensive analysis is presented for G_e arbitrary and G_nu=Z2 x Z2, as demanded if neutrinos are Majorana particles. We discuss interesting patterns arising from both groups G_e and G_nu being arbitrary. Several of the most promising patterns are specific deviations from tri-bimaximal mixing, all predicting theta_13 non-zero as …
Asymmetric mass matrices can induce large RH mixings. Those are non- measurable in the SM but are there and play an important role in its extensions. The RH rotations are in particular relevant for the proton decay, neutrino properties and baryon asymmetry. E.g. large RH mixings lead to kaon dominated proton decay even without SUSY and could be the reason for a large neutrino mixing. By studying those phenomena one can learn about the RH rotation matrices and this can reduce considerably the arbitrariness in the present fermionic mass study.
We reinvestigate a simple relation between the semileptonic CP asymmetry a_{sl}^s, the decay rate difference ΔΓ_s, the mass difference ΔM_s and S_{ψϕ} extracted from the angular analysis of the decay B_s \to ψϕ, which is regularly used in the literature. We find that this relation is not suited to eliminate the theory prediction for Γ_{12}, it can, however be used to determine the size of the penguin contributions to the decay B_s \to ψϕ. Moreover we comment on the current precision of the theory prediction for Γ_{12}.
We show that the $3\times 3$ lepton flavor mixing matrix $V$ can be expanded in powers of a Wolfenstein-like parameter $Λ\equiv |V_{μ3}| \sim 1/\sqrt{2}$, which measures the strength of flavor conversion in atmospheric neutrino oscillations. The term of ${\cal O}(Λ^2)$ is associated with the large mixing angle in solar neutrino oscillations. The Dirac phase of CP violation enters at or below ${\cal O}(Λ^8)$, and the Majorana phases of CP violation are not subject to the $Λ$-expansion. Terrestrial matter effects on this new parametrization in realistic long-baseline neutrino oscillation experim…
Only small regions in the $m_{t} - \tanβ$ plane are allowed when considering simultaneously (assuming the MSSM) coupling constant unification and (minimal) GUT relations among Yukawa couplings (i.e., $h_{b} = h_τ$ at the unification point). In particular, if $m_{t} \simle 175$ GeV we find that only $1 \simle \tanβ\simle 1.5$ or $\tanβ\simgr 40 \pm 10$ is allowed. The former implies that the light Higgs boson is $\simle 110$ GeV and, in principle, visible to LEPII. The prediction for the Higgs boson mass in the $\tanβ\approx 1$ scenario is discussed and uncertainties related to ($i$) vacuum sta…

We propose a new pattern of the neutrino mixing matrix which can be parametrized as the product of an arbitrary Hermitian matrix and the well-known tri-bimaximal mixing matrix. In this scenario, nontrivial values of the smallest neutrino mixing angle θ_13 and the CP-violating phases entirely arise from the non-unitary corrections. We present a complete set of series expansion formulas for neutrino oscillation probabilities both in vacuum and in matter of constant density. We do a numerical analysis to show the non-unitary effects on neutrino oscillations. The possibility of determining small n…
In the limit of an approximate $μ-τ$ symmetry in the neutrino mass matrix, we explore deviations to the Tri-Bi-Maximal mixing pattern in the neutrino sector. We consider two different ansatzes for the corrected pattern to predict the current values of neutrino mixing parameters. We show that it is possible to constrain the Majorana $CP$ phases by studying their correlation to the mixing parameters and we study their effects on neutrinoless double beta decay observables. These predictions are sharp for the quasi-degenerate ordering and can be tested in upcoming experiments.
