We argue that the increase of the ratio baryon/meson due to the presence of strong colour fields and percolation in ultra-high energy hadronic collisions, helps to explain some of the global features of ultra-high energy cosmic ray cascades at E>10^18 eV and, in particular the observed excess in the number of muons with respect to current models of hadronic interactions. A reasonable agreement with the small value and slope of the average depth of shower maximum Xmax vs shower energy -- as seen in data collected at the Pierre Auger Observatory -- can be obtained with a fast increase of the p-Air production cross-section compatible with the Froissart bound.
Standard dipole parton showers are known to yield incorrect subleading-colour contributions to the leading (double) logarithmic terms for a variety of observables. In this work, concentrating on final-state showers, we present two simple, computationally efficient prescriptions to correct this problem, exploiting a Lund-diagram type classification of emission regions. We study the resulting effective multiple-emission matrix elements generated by the shower, and discuss their impact on subleading colour contributions to leading and next-to-leading logarithms (NLL) for a range of observables. I…
A parton-shower model for hadronic collisions based on the emission properties of QCD dipoles is proposed. This proposal therefore extends the well-known radiation pattern of pure final-state colour dipoles to QCD initial-state radiation, both of which are treated perturbatively. Corresponding dipole splitting functions are derived and the kinematics of all dipole splittings is discussed. Application to hadron production in electron-positron annihilation, to Drell-Yan lepton-pair and QCD jet production yields encouraging results.
We present an algorithm to rearrange the colour chains of dipole showers in the shower process according to the colour amplitudes of a simple matrix element. We implement the procedure in the dipole shower of Herwig and show comparisons to data.
The dipole formalism provides a powerful framework from which parton showers can be constructed. In a recent paper, we proposed a dipole shower with improved colour accuracy and in this paper we show how it can be further improved. After an explicit check at $\mathcal{O}(α_{\mathrm{s}}^{2})$ we confirm that our original shower performs as it was designed to, i.e. inheriting its handling of angular-ordered radiation from a coherent branching algorithm. We also show how other dipole shower algorithms fail to achieve this. Nevertheless, there is an $\mathcal{O}(α_{\mathrm{s}}^{2})$ topology where…
A new parton shower algorithm has been presented with the claim of providing soft-gluon resummation at `full colour' (arXiv:2001.11492). In this paper we show that the algorithm does not succeed in this goal. We show that full colour accuracy requires the Sudakov factors to be defined at amplitude level and that the simple parton-shower unitarity argument employed in arXiv:2001.11492 is not sufficient.
We derive an improved prescription for the merging of matrix elements with parton showers, extending the CKKW approach. A flavour-dependent phase space separation criterion is proposed. We show that this new method preserves the logarithmic accuracy of the shower, and that the original proposal can be derived from it. One of the main requirements for the method is a truncated shower algorithm. We outline the corresponding Monte Carlo procedures and apply the new prescription to QCD jet production in e+e- collisions and Drell-Yan lepton pair production. Explicit colour information from matrix e…
Colour evolution and parton branching at the amplitude level have become important theoretical frameworks to improve parton showers, and are algorithms in their own right: they complement shower development by resummation algorithms capable of including interference effects and subleading colour contributions at an unprecedented level. I summarize recent development in the field, focusing on soft gluon evolution, hadronization, and the CVolver framework.
We study the colour connection structure of R-parity violating decays and production cross sections, and construct a Monte Carlo simulation of these processes including colour coherence effects. We then present some results from the implementation of these processes in the HERWIG Monte Carlo event generator. We include the matrix elements for the two-body sfermion and three-body gaugino and gluino decays as well as the two-to-two resonant hard production processes in hadron-hadron collisions.
We formulate PanScales parton showers for hadron collisions so as to achieve next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy across a broad set of observables. We do so specifically for colour singlet production. Relative to the existing PanScales final-state showers, the main new question is that of how to redistribute momentum imbalances from initial-state branching across the remainder of the event. We presents tests of the showers at fixed order, including the treatment of full colour for soft-collinear emissions and of spin correlations in both the soft and collinear domains. We also include c…
We carry out extensive tests of the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy of the PanScales parton showers, as introduced recently for colour-singlet production in hadron collisions. The tests include comparisons to (semi-)analytic NLL calculations of a wide range of hadron-collider observables: the colour-singlet boson transverse momentum distribution; global and non-global hadronic energy flow variables related to jet vetoes and analogues of jettiness distributions; (sub)jet multiplicities; and observables sensitive to the DGLAP evolution of the incoming momentum fractions. In the tests,…
Ultra high energy (UHE) photons can initiate electromagnetic showers in magnetic field. We analyze the two processes that determine the development of the shower, $e^+ e^-$ pair creation and synchrotron radiation, and derive formulae for the angular distribution of the produced particles. These formulae are necessary to study the three-dimensional development of the shower.
In hadron induced air showers of highest energies (E> 1e18 eV), the lateral distribution functions of electrons and muons are a superposition of many separate electromagnetic sub-showers, initiated by meson decay at different altitudes and energies. The lateral distribution function is the primary tool for reconstructing the energy of the primary in a UHE cosmic ray shower, so understanding it in detail is a prerequisite for having confidence in the energy determination. We analyze in this paper the dominant contributions to the ground level lateral distribution functions, as a function of the…
We investigate the possibility of detecting cosmic ultra-high energy tau-neutrinos by means of a process involving a double extensive air shower, the so-called Double-Bang Phenomenon. In this process a primary tau-neutrino interacts with an atmospheric quark creating a first hadronic shower and a tau-lepton, which subsequently decays creating a second cascade. The number of these events strongly depends on the flux of tau-neutrinos arriving at the Earth's atmosphere and can be used to test some theoretical models related to the production of ultra-high energy tau-neutrinos. We estimate the pot…
We present a method to match the multi-parton states generated by the High Energy Jets Monte Carlo with parton showers generated by the Ariadne program using the colour dipole model. The High Energy Jets program already includes a full resummation of soft divergences. Hence, in the matching it is important that the corresponding divergences in the parton shower are subtracted, keeping only the collinear parts. We present a novel, shower-independent method for achieving this, enabling us to generate fully exclusive and hadronized events with multiple hard jets, in hadronic collisions. We discus…
PeV neutrinos produce particle showers when they interact with the atomic nuclei in ice. We briefly describe characteristics of these showers and the radio Cherenkov signal produced by the showers. We study pulses from electromagnetic (em), hadronic, and combined em-hadronic showers and propose extrapolations to EeV energies.
We demonstrate that the shower-to-shower fluctuations of the muon content of extensive air showers correlate with the fluctuations of a variable of the first interaction of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays, which is computed from the fraction of energy carried by the hadrons that sustain the hadronic cascade. The influence of subsequent stages of the shower development is found to play a sub-dominant role. As a consequence, the shower-to-shower distribution of the muon content is a direct probe of the hadron energy spectrum of interactions beyond 100 TeV center of mass energies.
It has been suggested that the characteristic energy of string models may be considerably lower than the observed Planck mass. In such schemes, the unification of interactions takes place around the string scale, perhaps as low as a few tens of TeV. Consequently, at energies above the string scale, neutrinos acquire interactions comparable in strength to strong interactions. While they can propagate through the CMBR essentially uninhibited, in interactions with nuclei in the atmosphere they induce air showers comparable to proton induced ones. We conjecture that air showers above the Greisen-Z…
Studies of the nature of cosmic ray particles at the highest energies are based on the measurement of extensive air showers. Most cosmic ray properties can therefore only be obtained from the interpretation of air shower data and are thus depending on predictions of hadronic interaction models at ultra-high energies. We discuss different scenarios of model extrapolations from accelerator data to air shower energies and investigate their impact on the corresponding air shower predictions. To explore the effect of different extrapolations by hadronic interaction models we developed an ad hoc mod…
Cosmic rays and air showers at ultra-high energy are unique tools to test the validity of Lorentz invariance. A brief overview is given on such tests focusing on isotropic, non-birefringent Lorentz violation (LV) in the photon sector. Based on the apparent absence of vacuum Cherenkov radiation and photon decay, the LV parameter $κ$ is bound to $-0.6 \cdot 10^{-20} < κ< 6 \cdot 10^{-20}$ (98\% CL). We report an updated limit from cosmic-ray photon observations and preliminary results on testing vacuum Cherenkov radiation in air showers.
The observation of photons with energies above 10^18 eV would open a new window in cosmic-ray research, with possible impact on astrophysics, particle physics, cosmology and fundamental physics. Current and planned air shower experiments, particularly the Pierre Auger Observatory, offer an unprecedented opportunity to search for such photons and to complement efforts of multimessenger observations of the universe. We summarize motivation, achievements, and prospects of the search for ultra-high energy photons.
In models where the ultra-high energy cosmic ray problem is solved by top-down scenarios, a significant flux of ultra-high energy neutralinos is predicted. We calculate the number of events expected from such particles in future experiments such as EUSO or OWL. We show that by using the Earth as a filter, showers generated by neutralinos can be separated from neutrino generated showers. We find that for many models, observable rates are expected.
Experimental conclusions from air shower observations on cosmic-ray photons above 10^19 eV are based on the comparison to detailed shower simulations. For the calculations, the photonuclear cross-section needs to be extrapolated over several orders of magnitude in energy. The uncertainty from the cross-section extrapolation translates into an uncertainty of the predicted shower features for primary photons and, thus, into uncertainties for a possible data interpretation. After briefly reviewing the current status of ultra-high energy photon studies, the impact of the uncertainty of the photonu…
Apart from offering explanations not only for the distinctive fermion mass and mixing patterns but also for the actual values of the mass and mixing parameters, the dual colour solution to the generation puzzle gives numerous detailed predictions ranging from rare FCNC meson decays and $μ$-$e$ conversions in nuclei at low energies to cosmic ray air showers with energies beyond $10^{20}$ eV at the extreme end of the experimental range. Besides, it predicts a new class of flavour-violating phenomena (called transmutations) due to the rotating fermion mass matrix which are unambiguously calculabl…
We present an introductory lecture on general features of cosmic rays, for non-experts, and some recent developments concerning cascade equations for air shower developments.
Orbiting detectors will be able to observe showers initiated by neutrinos penetrating the Earth and interacting close to their exit point. There is a correlation between the impact parameter of the incident neutrino and its energy. We study the development of upward going, neutrino induced showers in the atmosphere.
Interpretation of extensive air showers (EAS) experiments results is strongly based on air shower simulations. The latter being based on hadronic interaction models, any new model can help for the understanding of the nature of cosmic rays. The EPOS model reproducing all major results of existing accelerator data (including detailed data of RHIC experiments) has been introduced in air shower simulation programs CORSIKA and CONEX few years ago. The new EPOS 1.99 has recently been updated taking into account the problem seen in EAS development using EPOS 1.61. We will show in details the relatio…
We investigate the impact of the Tsallis non extensive statistics introduced by intrinsic temperature fluctuations in p-Air ultra high energy interactions on observables of cosmic ray showers, such as the slant depth of the maximum Xmax and the muon number on the ground $n_μ$. The results show that these observables are significantly affected by temperature fluctuations and agree qualitatively with the Heitler model predictions.
Calibrating the absolute energy scale of air showers initiated by ultra-high energy cosmic rays is an important experimental issue. Currently, the corresponding systematic uncertainty amounts to 14-21% using the fluorescence technique. Here we describe a new, independent method which can be applied if ultra-high energy photons are observed. While such photon-initiated showers have not yet been identified, the capabilities of present and future cosmic-ray detectors may allow their discovery. The method makes use of the geomagnetic conversion of UHE photons (preshower effect), which significantl…
We propose a novel approach for studying neutrino oscillations with extragalactic neutrinos. We show that measurement of the neutrino induced upward hadronic and electromagnetic showers and upward muons could be used to detect $ν_μ\to ν_τ$ oscillations. We find significant signal to background ratios for the hadronic/electromagnetic showers with energies above 10 TeV to 100 TeV initiated by the extragalactic neutrinos. We demonstrate that a kilometer-size neutrino telescope has a very good chance of detecting neutrino oscillations.
The distribution of depth in which a cosmic ray air shower reaches its maximum number of particles ($X_{max}$) is studied and parametrized. Three functions are studied for proton, carbon, silicon, and iron primary particles with energies ranging from $10^{17}$ eV to $10^{20}$ eV for three hadronic interaction models: EPOS-LHC, QGSJetII.04, and Sibyll2.3c. The function which best describes the $X_{max}$ distribution of a mixed composition is also studied. A very large number of simulated showers and a detailed analysis procedure were used to guarantee negligible effects of undersampling and of …
Fluctuations in the muon content of extensive air showers are anticorrelated to the fluctuations of the energy taken by the neutral pions which emerge from the first interaction of the cosmic ray in the atmosphere. We show that the high-energy tail of the neutral pion spectrum produced in the first proton-air interaction can be constrained, within the uncertainties of present cosmic ray experiments, through the analysis of the shower-to-shower distribution of the muon content of the air showers, $P(N_μ)$.
The understanding of the basic properties of the ultra - high energy extensive air showers is strongly dependent on the description of the hadronic interactions in a energy range beyond that probed by the LHC. One of the uncertainties present in the modeling of the air showers is the treatment of diffractive interactions, which are dominated by non - perturbative physics and usually described by phenomenological models. These interactions are expect to affect the development of the air showers, since they provide a way of transporting substantial amounts of energy deep in the atmosphere, modif…
Coherent radiation at radio frequencies from high-energy showers fully contained in a dense radio-transparent medium - like ice, salt or regolith - has been extensively investigated as a promising technique to search for ultra-high energy (UHE) neutrinos. Additional emission in the form of transition radiation may occur when a neutrino-induced shower produced close to the Earth surface emerges from the ground into atmospheric air. We present the first detailed evaluation of transition radiation from high-energy showers crossing the boundary between two different media. We found that transition…

Hadronic cross sections at ultra-high energy have a significant impact on the development of extensive air shower cascades. Therefore the interpretation of air shower data depends critically on hadronic interaction models that extrapolate the cross section from accelerator measurements to the highest cosmic ray energies. We discuss how extreme scenarios of cross section extrapolations can affect the interpretation of air shower data. We find that the theoretical uncertainty of the extrapolated proton-air cross section at ultra-high energies is much larger than suggested by the existing spread …
The primary ultrahigh energy particles which produce giant extensive air showers in the Earth's atmosphere present an intriguing mystery from two points of view: (1) How are these particles produced with such astounding energies, eight orders of magnitude higher than those produced by the best man-made terrestrial accelerators? (2) Since they are most likely extragalactic in origin, how do they reach us from extragalactic distances without suffering the severe losses expected from interactions with the 2.7 K thermal cosmic background photons -- the so-called GZK effect? The answers to these qu…
We show that atmospheric electric fields may affect the cosmic ray observations in several ways and may lead to an overestimation of the cosmic ray energies. The electric field in thunderclouds can be as high as a few kV/cm. This field can accelerate the shower electrons and can feed some additional energy into the shower. Therefore, ground array observations in certain weather conditions may overestimate the energy of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays if they don't take this effect into account. In addition, the electric field can bend the muon trajectories and affect the direction and energy reco…
We show that the Auger Air Shower Array has the potential to detect neutrinos of energies in the $10^{19}~$eV range through horizontal air showers. Assuming some simple conservative trigger requirements we obtain the acceptance for horizontal air showers as induced by high energy neutrinos by two alternative methods and we then give the expected event rates for a variety of neutrino fluxes as predicted in different models which are used for reference.
In this study, the necessity of the simulation study for exploring the interactions of ultra-high energy particles cosmic rays was examined. Different hadronic interaction models such as (SIBYLL, QGSJET, and EPOS) were simulated by using air showers simulation AIRES system (version 19.04.00). Also, the charged particle density of Extensive Air Showers (EAS) was calculated by estimating the lateral distribution function (LDF). Moreover, the LDF simulation of the two primary particles (proton and iron nuclei) was performed, taking into account their primary energies effect and the zenith angle o…
Cosmic rays from outer space enter the atmosphere with energies of up to 10^{11} GeV. The initial particle or a secondary hadron inside the shower may then interact with an air nucleon to produce nonstandard particles. In this article we study the production of new physics by high energy cosmic rays, focusing on the long-lived gluino of split-SUSY models and a WIMP working as dark matter. We first deduce the total flux of hadron events at any depth in the atmosphere, showing that secondary hadrons can not be neglected. Then we use these results to find the flux of gluinos and WIMPs that reach …
Lorentz invariance violation in the extragalactic propagation of ultra-high energy photons and in the development of showers in the Earth crust and atmosphere
Stable Superstring Relics (SSR) provide some of the candidates for the possible origin of the Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR). After a brief overview of the motivations for introducing such relics, we address the question whether statistical fluctuations in the formation of the air showers generated by the primary spectrum of protons can be separated from a possible signal of new physics hidden in the first impact with the atmosphere. Our results are generated by using minimal modifications in the cross section of the primaries, and using available simulation codes used by the experiment…
We investigate the detection of exotic massive strongly interacting hadrons (uhecrons) in ultra high energy cosmic ray telescopes. The conclusion is that experiments such as the Pierre Auger Observatory have the potential to detect these particles. It is shown that uhecron showers have clear distinctive features when compared to proton and nuclear showers. The simulation of uhecron air showers, and its detection and reconstruction by fluorescence telescopes is described. We determine basic cuts in observables that will separate uhecrons from the cosmic ray bulk, assuming this is composed by pr…
We extend a quantum kinetic approach to the description of hadronic showers in space, time and momentum space to deep-inelastic $ep$ collisions, with particular reference to experiments at HERA. We follow the history of hard scattering events back to the initial hadronic state and forward to the formation of colour-singlet pre-hadronic clusters and their decays into hadrons. The time evolution of the space-like initial-state shower and the time-like secondary partons are treated similarly, and cluster formation is treated using a spatial criterion motivated by confinement and a non-perturbativ…
We study the role new gauge interactions in extensions of the standard model play in air showers initiated by ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays. Hadron-hadron events remain dominated by quantum chromodynamics, while projectiles and/or targets from beyond the standard model permit us to see qualitative differences arising due to the new interactions.
Ultra High Cosmic Rays (UHECR) Astronomy may be correlated to a primary parental Neutrino Astronomy: indeed any far BL Lac Jet or GRB, sources of UHECR, located at cosmic edges, may send its signal, overcoming the severe GZK cut-off, by help of UHE ZeV energetic neutrino primary. These UHE neutrino scattering on relic light ones (spread on wide Hot Local Groups Halos) maybe fine-tuned : E_(nu) =(M_Z)^2/m_(nu) = 4 10^(22) eV *((0.1eV)/m_(nu)), to combine at once the observed light neutrino masses and the UHECR spectra, leading to a relativistic Z-Shower in Hot Dark Halos (e few tens Mpc wide) w…
A report on the characteristics of ultra-high energy air showers simulated with the AIRES program is presented. The AIRES system includes a fast simulating program which is an improved version of the well-known MOCCA program. The AIRES algorithms are briefly described and a series of results coming from the simulations are analyzed.
We study the proposal that the cosmic ray primaries above the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) cutoff are gluino-containing hadrons ($\tilde g$-hadrons). We describe the interaction of $\tilde g$-hadrons with nucleons in the framework of the Gribov-Regge approach using a modified version of the hadronic interaction model QGSJET for the generations of Extensive Air Showers (EAS). There are two mass windows marginally allowed for gluinos: $m_{\tilde g}\lsim 3$ GeV and $25\lsim m_{\tilde g}\lsim 35$ GeV. Gluino-containing hadrons corresponding to the second window produce EAS very different from the…
We propose an innovative test of Lorentz symmetry by observing pairs of simultaneous parallel extensive air showers produced by the fragments of ultrahigh-energy cosmic ray nuclei which disintegrated in collisions with solar photons. We show that the search for a cross-correlation of showers in arrival time and direction becomes background free for an angular scale < 3^\circ and a time window {\cal O}(10 s). We also show that if the solar photo-disintegration probability of helium is {\cal O} (10^{-5.5}) then the hunt for spatiotemporal coincident showers could be within range of existing cosm…
A report on the characteristics of ultra-high energy air showers simulated with the current version of the AIRES program is presented. The AIRES system includes a fast simulating program, originally designed on the basis of the well-known MOCCA program, and progressively improved and tested. The AIRES algorithms are briefly described and some results coming from the simulations are analyzed.
We show that combining the published Pierre Auger Observatory measurements of the longitudinal_and_ lateral properties of UHE atmospheric showers, points to an unforeseen change in the nature of particle interactions at ultrahigh energy. A "toy model" of UHE proton-air interactions is presented which provides the first fully consistent description of air shower observations. It demonstrates that the observed energy dependence of the depth-of-shower-maximum distribution may not indicate a transition to a heavier composition, as commonly assumed. While fundamentally phenomenological, the model i…
If the dark matter of our galaxy is composed of nuggets of quarks or antiquarks in a colour superconducting phase there will be a small but non-zero flux of these objects through the Earth's atmosphere. A nugget of quark matter will deposit only a small fraction of its kinetic energy in the atmosphere and is likely to be undetectable. If however the impacting object is composed of antiquarks the energy deposited can be quite large. In this case nuclear annihilations within the nugget will trigger an extensive air shower the particle content of which is similar to that produced by an ultrahigh …
The total photoproduction cross section at ultra-high energies is obtained using a model based on QCD minijets and soft-gluon resummation and the ansatz that infrared gluons limit the rise of total cross sections. This cross section is introduced into the Monte Carlo system AIRES to simulate extended air-showers initiated by cosmic ray photons. The impact of the new photoproduction cross section on common shower observables, especially those related to muon production, is compared with previous results.
