In this paper, a superposition-coded concurrent decode-and-forward (DF) relaying protocol is presented. A specific scenario, where the inter-relay channel is sufficiently strong, is considered. Assuming perfect source-relay transmissions, the proposed scheme further improves the diversity performance of previously proposed repetition-coded concurrent DF relaying, in which the advantage of the inter-relay interference is not fully extracted.
"Amplify and Forward" and "Decode and Forward" are the two main relaying functions that have been proposed since the advent of cooperative communication. "\textit{Soft} Decode and Forward" is a recently introduced relaying principle that is to combine the benefits of the classical two relaying algorithms. In this work, we thoroughly investigate \textit{soft} relaying algorithms when convolutional or turbo codes are applied. We study the error performance of two cooperative scenarios employing soft-relaying. A novel approach, the mutual information loss due to data processing, is proposed to an…
The design of modulation schemes for the physical layer network-coded three-way wireless relaying scenario is considered. The protocol employs two phases: Multiple Access (MA) phase and Broadcast (BC) phase with each phase utilizing one channel use. For the two-way relaying scenario, it was observed by Koike-Akino et al. \cite{KPT}, that adaptively changing the network coding map used at the relay according to the channel conditions greatly reduces the impact of multiple access interference which occurs at the relay during the MA phase and all these network coding maps should satisfy a require…
A wireless relay with multiple antennas is called a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) switch if it maps its input links to its output links using "precode-and-forward." Namely, the MIMO switch precodes the received signal vector in the uplink using some matrix for transmission in the downlink. This paper studies the scenario of $K$ stations and a MIMO switch, which has full channel state information. The precoder at the MIMO switch is either a zero-forcing matrix or a network-coded matrix. With the zero-forcing precoder, each destination station receives only its desired signal with enhanc…
An adaptive joint power allocation (JPA) and linear receiver design algorithm using the minimum bit error rate (MBER) criterion for a cooperative Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) network is proposed. The system employs multiple relays with Distributed Space-Time Coding (DSTC) schemes and an Amplify-and-Forward (AF) strategy. It is designed according to a joint constrained optimization algorithm to determine the MBER power allocation parameters and the receive filter parameters for each transmitted symbol. The simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm obtains performance gain…
This work studies the performance of a cooperative network which consists of two channel-coded sources, multiple relays, and one destination. Due to spectral efficiency constraint, we assume only one time slot is dedicated for relaying. Conventional network coding based cooperation (NCC) selects the best relay which uses network coding to serve two sources simultaneously. The performance in terms of bit error rate (BER) of NCC, however, is not available in the literature. In this paper, we first derive the closed-form expression for the BER of NCC and analytically show that NCC always achieves…
The design of modulation schemes for the physical layer network-coded two way wireless relaying scenario is considered. It was observed by Koike-Akino et al. for the two way relaying scenario, that adaptively changing the network coding map used at the relay according to the channel conditions greatly reduces the impact of multiple access interference which occurs at the relay during the MA Phase and all these network coding maps should satisfy a requirement called exclusive law. We extend this approach to an Accumulate-Compute and Forward protocol which employs two phases: Multiple Access (MA…
This paper deals with physical layer network-coding for the four-way wireless relaying scenario where four nodes A, B, C and D wish to communicate their messages to all the other nodes with the help of the relay node R. The scheme given in the paper is based on the denoise-and-forward scheme proposed first by Popovski et al. Intending to minimize the number of channel uses, the protocol employs two phases: Multiple Access (MA) phase and Broadcast (BC) phase with each phase utilizing one channel use. This paper does the equivalent for the four-way relaying scenario as was done for the two-way r…
We study the outage probability of opportunistic relay selection in decode-and-forward relaying with secrecy constraints. We derive the closed-form expression for the outage probability. Based on the analytical result, the asymptotic performance is then investigated. The accuracy of our performance analysis is verified by the simulation results.
In this paper, we examine the performance of the decode-and-forward (DF) relaying protocols with finite blocklength (FB). We provide the overall outage probability of three distinct DF relaying protocols, where the channels are assumed to be quasi static Rayleigh fading. More importantly, we derive the closed form expressions of the outage probability in the three relaying scenarios. We illustrate protocols where the cooperative communications outperform the direct transmission (DT). In addition, we compare the operating efficiency of the cooperative schemes in the ultra-reliable (UR) region.
Physical layer network-coding for the $n$-way wireless relaying scenario is dealt with, where each of the $n$ user nodes $X_1,$ $X_2,...,X_n$ wishes to communicate its messages to all the other $(n-1)$ nodes with the help of the relay node R. The given scheme, based on the denoise-and-forward scheme proposed for two-way relaying by Popovski et al. in \cite{PoY1}, employs two phases: Multiple Access (MA) phase and Broadcast (BC) phase with each phase utilizing one channel use and hence totally two channel uses. Physical layer network-coding using the denoise-and-forward scheme was done for the …
We consider a wireless relay network with multiple antenna terminals over Rayleigh fading channels, and apply distributed space-time coding (DSTC) in amplify-and-forward (A&F) mode. The A&F scheme is used in a way that each relay transmits a scaled version of the linear combination of the received symbols. It turns out that, combined with power allocation in the relays, A&F DSTC results in an opportunistic relaying scheme, in which only the best relay is selected to retransmit the source's space-time coded signal. Furthermore, assuming the knowledge of source-relay CSI at the source node, we d…
The design of modulation schemes for the physical layer network-coded two way relaying scenario is considered with the protocol which employs two phases: Multiple access (MA) Phase and Broadcast (BC) phase. It was observed by Koike-Akino et al. that adaptively changing the network coding map used at the relay according to the channel conditions greatly reduces the impact of multiple access interference which occurs at the relay during the MA phase. In other words, the set of all possible channel realizations (the complex plane) is quantized into a finite number of regions, with a specific netw…
Decode-and-forward (DF) cooperative communication based on free space optical (FSO) links is studied in this letter. We analyze performance of the DF protocol in the FSO links following the Gamma-Gamma distribution. The cumulative distribution function (CDF) and probability density function (PDF) of a random variable containing mixture of the Gamma- Gamma and Gaussian random variables is derived. By using the derived CDF and PDF, average bit error rate of the DF relaying is obtained.
Two-way relaying can considerably improve spectral efficiency in relay-assisted bidirectional communications. However, the benefits and flexible structure of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based two-way decode-and-forward (DF) relay systems is much less exploited. Moreover, most of existing works have not considered quality-of-service (QoS) provisioning for two-way relaying. In this paper, we consider the OFDM-based bidirectional transmission where a pair of users exchange information with or without the assistance of a single DF relay. Each user can communicate with the oth…
To improve the sum-rate (SR) of the dual-hop relay system, a novel two-stage power allocation scheme with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is proposed. In this scheme, after the reception of the superposition coded symbol with a power allocation from the source, the relay node forwards a new superposition coded symbol with another power allocation to the destination. By employing the maximum ratio combination (MRC), the destination jointly decodes the information symbols from the source and the relay. Assuming Rayleigh fading channels, closed-form solution of the ergodic SR at high signal…
In this paper, we propose a practical implementation of the Dynamic Decode and Forward (DDF) protocol based on rateless codes and HARQ. We define the macro diversity order of a transmission from several intermittent sources to a single destination. Considering finite symbol alphabet used by the different sources, upper bounds on the achievable macro diversity order are derived. We analyse the diversity behavior of several relaying schemes for the DDF protocol, and we propose the Patching technique to increase both the macro and the micro diversity orders. The coverage gain for the open-loop tr…
Modulation schemes for two-way bidirectional relay network employing two phases: Multiple access (MA) phase and Broadcast (BC) phase and using physical layer network coding are currently studied intensively. Recently, adaptive modulation schemes using Latin Squares to obtain network coding maps with the denoise and forward protocol have been reported with good end-to-end performance. These schemes work based on avoiding the detrimental effects of distance shortening in the effective receive constellation at the end of the MA phase at the relay. The channel fade states that create such distance…
This paper investigates the system achievable rate and optimization for the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system with an energy harvesting (EH) relay. Firstly we propose a time switchingbased relaying (TSR) protocol to enable the simultaneous information processing and energy harvesting at the relay. Then, we discuss its achievable rate performance theoretically and formulated an optimization problem to maximize the system achievable rate. As the problem is difficult to solve, we design an Augmented Lagrangian Penalty Function (ALPF) me…
Using the spatial modulation approach, where only one transmit antenna is active at a time, we propose two transmission schemes for two-way relay channel using physical layer network coding with space time coding using Coordinate Interleaved Orthogonal Designs (CIOD's). It is shown that using two uncorrelated transmit antennas at the nodes, but using only one RF transmit chain and space-time coding across these antennas can give a better performance without using any extra resources and without increasing the hardware implementation cost and complexity. In the first transmission scheme, two an…
In this paper, we present a new cooperative communication scheme consisting of two users in half-duplex mode communicating with one destination over a discrete memoryless channel. The users encode messages in independent blocks and divide the transmission of each block into 3 time slots with variable durations. Cooperation is performed by partial decodeforward relaying over these 3 time slots. During the first two time slots, each user alternatively transmits and decodes, while during the last time slot, both users cooperate to send information to the destination. An achievable rate region for…
In this paper, we analyze a composite decode-and-forward scheme for the two-way relay channel with a direct link. During transmission, our scheme combines both block Markov coding and an independent coding scheme similar to network coding at the relay. The main contribution of this work is to examine how link state impacts the allocation of power between these two distinct techniques, which in turn governs the necessity of each technique in achieving the largest transmission rate region. We analytically determine the link-state regimes and associated relaying techniques. Our results illustrate…
We consider a three-node decode-and-forward (DF) half-duplex relaying system, where the source first harvests RF energy from the relay, and then uses this energy to transmit information to the destination via the relay. We assume that the information transfer and wireless power transfer phases alternate over time in the same frequency band, and their {\it time fraction} (TF) may change or be fixed from one transmission epoch (fading state) to the next. For this system, we maximize the achievable average data rate. Thereby, we propose two schemes: (1) jointly optimal power and TF allocation, an…
In this letter, we introduce two hybrid transmission schemes combining a passive reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) with decode-and-forward relaying in a synergistic manner. The proposed schemes offer a flexible as well as cost- and power-efficient solution for coverage extension in future generation wireless networks. We present closed-form expressions for the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio of both schemes and a sequential optimization algorithm for the power allocation and the RIS phase configurations. Our computer simulations and theoretical analysis demonstrate that the RIS and rel…
Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has attracted great recent attention due to its high spectral efficiency. Besides, NOMA can be easily implemented in physical layer, thus its interplays with other psychical layer techniques have been analyzed widely by researches. Cooperative NOMA schemes are the most investigated among these interplays. However, these studies mostly analyze cooperative NOMA schemes in terms of achievable rate and outage probability whereas bit error probability (BEP) for those systems has not been studied well although it is one of the most important performance metrics.…
In URLLC the performance of short message communications highly depends on the training sequence length due to the stringent latency and reliability requirements. In this paper, we study the performance of cooperative and non-cooperative transmissions under imperfect channel estimation and Rayleigh fading for URLLC. We assume a peak power constraint on pilot symbols in addition to the average power constraint which is used for comparison purposes. We obtain the optimal training length as a function of blocklength and power constraint factor to meet the URLLC requirements. Moreover, the simulat…
Radio-frequency energy harvesting constitutes an effective way to prolong the lifetime of wireless networks, wean communication devices off the battery and power line, benefit the energy saving and lower the carbon footprint of wireless communications. In this paper, an interference aided energy harvesting scheme is proposed for cooperative relaying systems, where energy-constrained relays harvest energy from the received information signal and co-channel interference signals, and then use that harvested energy to forward the correctly decoded signal to the destination. The time-switching sche…
The key advantage of successive relaying (SR) networks is their ability to mimic the full-duplex (FD) operation with half-duplex (HD) relays. However, the main challenge that comes with such schemes is the associated inter-relay interference (IRI). In this work, we propose a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-enhanced SR network, where one RIS is deployed near each of the two relay nodes to provide spatial suppression of IRI, and to maximize the gain of desired signals. The resultant max-min optimization problem with joint phase-shift design for both RISs is first tackled via the semidef…
In this work, a relay channel is studied in which a source encoder communicates with a destination decoder through a number of out-of-band relays that are connected to the decoder through capacity-constrained digital backhaul links. This model is motivated by the uplink of cloud radio access networks. In this scenario, a novel transmission and relaying strategies are proposed in which multi-layer transmission is used, on the one hand, to adaptively leverage the different decoding capabilities of the relays and, on the other hand, to enable hybrid decode-and-forward (DF) and compress-and-forwar…
We propose composite decode-forward (DF) schemes for the two-way relay channel in both the full- and half-duplex modes by combining coherent relaying, independent relaying and partial relaying strategies. For the full-duplex mode, the relay partially decodes each user's information in each block and forwards this partial information coherently with the source user to the destination user in the next block as in block Markov coding. In addition, the relay independently broadcasts a binning index of both users' decoded information parts in the next block as in independent network coding. Each te…
In this paper, a symbol-level selective transmission for full-duplex (FD) relaying networks is proposed to mitigate error propagation effects and improve system spectral efficiency. The idea is to allow the FD relay node to predict the correctly decoded symbols of each frame, based on the generalized square deviation method, and discard the erroneously decoded symbols, resulting in fewer errors being forwarded to the destination node. Using the capability for simultaneous transmission and reception at the FD relay node, our proposed strategy can improve the transmission efficiency without extr…
The multicast capacity of the Gaussian two-hop relay network with one source, $N$ relays, and $L$ destinations is studied. It is shown that a careful modification of the partial decode--forward coding scheme, whereby the relays cooperate through degraded sets of message parts, achieves the cutset upper bound within $(1/2)\log N$ bits regardless of the channel gains and power constraints. This scheme improves upon a previous scheme by Chern and Ozgur, which is also based on partial decode--forward yet has an unbounded gap from the cutset bound for $L \ge 2$ destinations. When specialized to ind…
We propose a novel relaying scheme which improves the spectral efficiency of cooperative diversity systems by utilizing limited feedback from destination. Our scheme capitalizes on the fact that relaying is only required when direct transmission suffers deep fading. We calculate the packet error rate for the proposed efficient incremental relaying scheme with both amplify and forward and decode and forward relaying. Numerical results are also presented to verify their analytical counterparts.
Utilizing relaying techniques to improve performance of wireless systems is a promising avenue. However, it is crucial to understand what type of relaying schemes should be used for achieving different performance objectives under realistic fading conditions. In this paper, we present a general framework for modelling and evaluating the performance of relaying schemes based on the decode-and-forward (DF) protocol over independent and not necessarily identically distributed (INID) Nakagami-m fading channels. In particular, we present closed-form expressions for the statistics of the instantaneo…
In this paper, a multi-antenna assisted virtual full-duplex (FD) relaying with reliability-aware iterative decoding at destination node is proposed to improve system spectral efficiency and reliability. This scheme enables two half-duplex relay nodes, mimicked as FD relaying, to alternatively serve as transmitter and receiver to relay their decoded data signals regardless the decoding errors, meanwhile, cancel the inter-relay interference with QR-decomposition. Then, by deploying the reliability-aware iterative detection/decoding process, destination node can efficiently mitigate inter-frame i…
In this letter, we derive the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the minimum of two non-central Chi-square random variables with two degrees of freedom in terms of power series. With the help of the derived PDF and CDF, we obtain the exact ergodic capacity of the following adaptive protocols in a decode-and-forward (DF) cooperative system over dissimilar Rician fading channels: (i) constant power with optimal rate adaptation; (ii) optimal simultaneous power and rate adaptation; (iii) channel inversion with fixed rate. By using the analytical expres…
In this paper, we re-examine the relay channel under the decode-forward (DF) strategy. Contrary to the established belief that block Markov coding is always the rate-optimal DF strategy, under certain channel conditions (a link regime), independent signaling between the source and relay achieves the same transmission rate without requiring coherent channel phase information. Further, this independent signaling regime allows the relay to conserve power. As such, we design a composite DF relaying strategy that achieves the same rate as block Markov DF but with less required relay power. The find…
In this paper, a symbol-level selective transmission for virtual full-duplex (FD) relaying networks is proposed, which aims to mitigate error propagation effects and improve system spectral efficiency. The idea is to allow two half-duplex relays, mimicked as FD relaying, to alternatively serve as transmitter and receiver to forward the source's messages. In this case, each relay predicts the correctly decoded symbols of its received frame, based on the generalized square deviation method, and discard the erroneously decoded symbols, resulting in fewer errors being forwarded to the destination.…
Machine-Type Communication (MTC) is a rapidly growing technology which covers a broad range of automated applications and propels the world into a fully connected society. Two new use cases of MTC are mMTC and URLLC, where mMTC support a large number of devices with high reliability and low rate connectivity while URLLC refers to excessively low outage probability under very stringent latency constraint. Herein, we examine the URLLC through three cooperative schemes, namely dual-hop DF, SC and MRC, and compare to direct transmission under Rayleigh fading. We compare the performance of studied …
We present a decode-and-forward transmission scheme based on spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes for a network consisting of two (possibly correlated) sources, one relay, and one destination. The links between the nodes are modeled as binary erasure channels. Joint source-channel coding with joint channel decoding is used to exploit the correlation. The relay performs network coding. We derive analytical bounds on the achievable rates for the binary erasure time-division multiple-access relay channel with correlated sources. We then design bilayer SC-LDPC codes and analy…
In this paper, we study the problem of secure routing in a multihop wireless ad-hoc network in the presence of randomly distributed eavesdroppers. Specifically, the locations of the eavesdroppers are modeled as a homogeneous Poisson point process (PPP) and the source-destination pair is assisted by intermediate relays using the decode-and-forward (DF) strategy. We analytically characterize the physical layer security performance of any chosen multihop path using the end-to-end secure connection probability (SCP) for both colluding and non-colluding eavesdroppers. To facilitate finding an effic…
Motivated by applications such as battery-operated wireless sensor networks (WSN), we propose an easy-to-implement energy-efficient two-way relaying scheme. In particular, we address the challenge of improving the standard two-way selective decode-and-forward protocol (TW-SDF) in terms of block-error-rate (BLER) with minor additional complexity and energy consumption. By following the principle of soft relaying, our solution is the two-way one-bit soft forwarding (TW-1bSF) protocol in which the relay forwards the one-bit quantization of a posterior information metric about the transmitted bits…
We derive the outage capacity of a bursty version of the amplify-and-forward (BAF) protocol for small signal-to-noise ratios when incremental relaying is used. We show that the ratio between the outage capacities of BAF and the cut-set bound is independent of the relay position and that BAF is outage optimal for certain conditions on the target rate R. This is in contrast to decode-and-forward with incremental relaying, where the relay location strongly determines the performance of the cooperative protocol. We further derive the outage capacity for a network consisting of an arbitrary number …
In this paper, we study a compute-and-forward (CAF) relaying scheme with low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, a special case of physical layer network coding, under the quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation. The novelty of this paper is the theoretical analysis of decoding performance of the CAF scheme and traditional separation decoding (SD) scheme with joint decoding or with successive interference cancellation (SIC) decoding when the reception powers from both senders are not equal but close to each other. First, we study the decoding performance of linear random coding (LRC) in…
The problem of dual-hop transmission from a source to a destination via two parallel full-duplex relays in block Rayleigh fading environment is investigated. All nodes in the network are assumed to be oblivious to their forward channel gains; however, they have perfect information about their backward channel gains. The focus of this paper is on simple, efficient, and practical relaying schemes to increase the expected-rate at the destination. For this purpose, various combinations of relaying protocols and the broadcast approach (multi-layer coding) are proposed. For the decode-forward (DF) r…
A linear mesh network is considered in which a single user per cell communicates to a local base station via a dedicated relay (two-hop communication). Exploiting the possibly relevant inter-cell channel gains, rate splitting with successive cancellation in both hops is investigated as a promising solution to improve the rate of basic single-rate communications. Then, an alternative solution is proposed that attempts to improve the performance of the second hop (from the relays to base stations) by cooperative transmission among the relay stations. The cooperative scheme leverages the common i…
In this letter, a compressed relaying scheme via Huffman and physical-layer network coding (HPNC) is proposed for two-way relay networks with correlated sources (TWRN-CS). In the HPNC scheme, both sources first transmit the correlated raw source messages to the relay simultaneously. The relay performs physical-layer network coding (PNC) on the received symbols, compresses the PNC-coded symbols using Huffman coding, and broadcasts the compressed symbols to both source nodes. Then, each source decodes the other source's messages by using its own messages as side information. Compression rate and…
We analyze coding for energy efficiency in relay channels at a fixed source rate. We first propose a half-duplex decode-forward coding scheme for the Gaussian relay channel. We then derive three optimal sets of power allocation, which respectively minimize the network, the relay and the source energy consumption. These optimal power allocations are given in closed-form, which have so far remained implicit for maximum-rate schemes. Moreover, analysis shows that minimizing the network energy consumption at a given rate is not equivalent to maximizing the rate given energy, since it only covers p…
An intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is an array of discrete elements with configurable scattering properties. It has the capability to beamform arriving radio waves to an intended receiver, making it an attractive candidate technology for fifth-generation (5G) communications. A recent study debunked the notion that IRSs can replace relays because a large number of IRS elements is required even to approach the performance of simple single-antenna decode-and-forward (DF) relays. The study introduced 4G channel models into a theoretical framework to obtain simulation results, based on which c…
This paper considers secrecy of a three node cooperative wireless system in the presence of a passive eavesdropper. The threshold-selection decode-and-forward (DF) relay is considered, which can decode the source message correctly only if a predefined signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is achieved. The effects of channel state information (CSI) availability on secrecy outage probability (SOP) and ergodic secrecy rate (ESR) are investigated, and closed-form expressions are derived. Diversity is achieved from the direct and relaying paths both at the destination and at the eavesdropper by combinations …
In a three-node network a half-duplex relay node enables bidirectional communication between two nodes with a spectral efficient two phase protocol. In the first phase, two nodes transmit their message to the relay node, which decodes the messages and broadcast a re-encoded composition in the second phase. In this work we determine the capacity region of the broadcast phase. In this scenario each receiving node has perfect information about the message that is intended for the other node. The resulting set of achievable rates of the two-phase bidirectional relaying includes the region which ca…
In this paper, we analyze the throughput performance of incremental relaying using energy harvesting (EH) decode-and-forward (DF) relays in underlay cognitive radio networks (CRNs). The destination combines the direct and relayed signals when the direct link is in outage. From the derived closed-form expressions, we present an expression for the power-splitting parameter of the EH relay that optimizes the throughput performance. We demonstrate that relaying using EH DF relays results in better performance than direct signalling without a relay only when the destination combines the direct sign…
This paper considers the design of relay assisted F/TDMA ad hoc networks with multiple relay nodes each of which assists the transmission of a predefined subset of source nodes to their respective destinations. Considering the sum capacity as the performance metric, we solve the problem of optimally allocating the total power of each relay node between the transmissions it is assisting. We consider four different relay transmission strategies, namely regenerative decode-and-forward (RDF), nonregenerative decode-and-forward (NDF), amplify-and-forward (AF) and compress-and-forward (CF). We first…
Error propagation and noise propagation at the relay node would highly degrade system performance in two-way relay networks. In this paper, we introduce DNF-AF selection two-way relaying scheme which aims to avoid error propagation and mitigate noise propagation. If the relay successfully decodes the exclusive or (XOR) of the messages sent by the two transceivers, it applies denoise-and-forward (DNF). Otherwise, amplify-and-forward (AF) strategy will be utilized. In this way, decoding error propagation is avoided at the relay. Meanwhile, since the relay attempts to decode the XOR of the two me…
In this work, we provide a global framework analysis of a multi-hop relaying systems wherein the transmitter (TX) communicates with the receiver (RX) through a set of intermediary relays deployed either in series or in parallel. Regenerative based relaying scheme is assumed such as the repetition-coded decoded-and-forward (DF) wherein the decoding is threshold-based. To reflect a wide range of fading, we introduce the generalized $H$-function (also termed as Fox-$H$ function) distribution model which enables the modeling of radio-frequency (RF) fading like Weibull and Gamma, as well as the fre…
In this paper, we study the two-way relay channel with energy harvesting nodes. In particular, we find transmission policies that maximize the sum-throughput for two-way relay channels when the relay does not employ a data buffer. The relay can perform decode-and-forward, compress-and-forward, compute-and-forward or amplify-and-forward relaying. Furthermore, we consider throughput improvement by dynamically choosing relaying strategies, resulting in hybrid relaying strategies. We show that an iterative generalized directional water-filling algorithm solves the offline throughput maximization p…
We consider mesh networks composed of groups of relaying nodes which operate in decode-and-forward mode, where each node from a group relays information to all the nodes in the next group. We study these networks in two setups, one where the nodes have complete channel state information from the nodes that transmit to them, and another when they only have the statistics of the channel. We derive recursive expressions for the probabilities of errors of the nodes and present several implementations of detectors used in these networks. We compare the mesh networks with multihop networks, the latt…
In this paper, we study the problem of physical layer security in a large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (LS-MIMO) relaying system. The advantage of LS-MIMO relaying systems is exploited to enhance both wireless security and spectral efficiency. In particular, the challenging issue incurred by short interception distance is well addressed. Under very practical assumptions, i.e., no eavesdropper's channel state information (CSI) and imperfect legitimate channel CSI, this paper gives a thorough investigation of the impact of imperfect CSI in two classic relaying systems, i.e., amplify-and-…
