Forward-backward multiplicity correlations have been measured with the STAR detector for Au+Au, Cu+Cu and {\it p+p} collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. A strong, long-range correlation is observed for central heavy ion collisions that vanishes in semi-peripheral events and {\it pp} collisions. There is no apparent scaling of correlation strength with the number of participants involved in the collision. Both the Dual Parton Model and the Color Glass condensate indicate that the long range correlations are due to multiple parton interactions. This suggests that the dense partonic matter might have been created in mid-central and central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV.
A dense form of matter is formed in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The constituent degrees of freedom in this dense matter are currently unknown. Long-range, forward-backward multiplicity correlations (LRC) are expected to arise due to multiple partonic interactions. Model independent and dependent arguments suggest that such correlations are due to multiple partonic interactions. These correlations are predicted in the context of the Dual Parton Model (DPM). The DPM describes soft partonic processes and hadronization. This model indicates that the underlying mechanism creating these long-…
The forward-backward multiplicity and correlations of target evaporated fragment(black track particle) and target recoiled proton(grey track particle) emitted in 150 A MeV He-emulsion, 290 A MeV C-emulsion, 400 A MeV C-emulsion, 400 A MeV Ne-emulsion and 500 A MeV Fe-emulsion interactions are investigated. It is found that the forward and backward averaged multiplicity of grey, black and heavily ionized track particle increase with the increase of target size. Averaged multiplicity of forward black track particle, backward black track particle, and backward grey track particle do not depend on…
We investigate the role of partonic degrees of freedom in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV carried out at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) by studying the production and collective flow of identified hadrons at intermediate $p_T$ via the coalescence of soft and hard partons generated from viscous hydrodynamics (VISH2+1) and the energy loss model (LBT), respectively. We find that combining the intermediate $p_T$ hadrons from the coalescence with the low $p_T$ hadrons from hydrodynamics and high $p_T$ hadrons from the jet fragmentation, our Hydro-Coal-Frag model prov…
The multiplicity distribution, multiplicity moment, scaled variance, entropy and reduced entropy of target evaporated fragment emitted in forward and backward hemispheres in 12 A GeV $^{4}$He, 3.7 A GeV $^{16}$O, 60 A GeV $^{16}$O, 1.7 A GeV $^{84}$Kr and 10.7 A GeV $^{197}$Au induced emulsion heavy targets (AgBr) interactions are investigated. It is found that the multiplicity distribution of target evaporated fragments emitted in forward and backward hemispheres can be fitted by a Gaussian distribution. The multiplicity moments of target evaporated particles emitted in forward and backward h…
Forward-backward multiplicity correlation strengths have been measured with the STAR detector for Au+Au and $\textit{p+p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. Strong short and long range correlations (LRC) are seen in central Au+Au collisions. The magnitude of these correlations decrease with decreasing centrality until only short range correlations are observed in peripheral Au+Au collisions. Both the Dual Parton Model (DPM) and the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) predict the existence of the long range correlations. In the DPM the fluctuation in the number of elementary (parton) inelastic …
Two-particle pseudorapidity correlations are measured in 2.76 TeV Pb+Pb, 5.02 TeV pPb and 13 TeV pp collisions. Correlation function is measured using charged particles in the pseudorapidity range $|η|<2.4$ with transverse momentum $p_T>0.2$ GeV, and it is measured as a function of event multiplicity, defined by number of charged particles with $|η|<2.5$ and $p_T>0.4$ GeV. The correlation function is decomposed into a short-range component (SRC) and a long-range component (LRC). The SRC differs significantly between the opposite-charge pairs and same-charge pairs, and between the three collisi…
At the LHC energies, the underlying observables are of major topic of interest in high multiplicity $p+p$ collisions. Multiple Parton Interactions (MPI) is one of them, in which several interactions occur in a single $p+p$ collision. It is believed that MPI is the main reason behind the high multiplicity in $p+p$ collisions at the LHC. It was believed that MPI has only effect to the soft particle production, but recent ALICE result reveals that it can also affect the hard-particle production. In such case, the self normalized yield of heavy particle like $\rm J/ψ$ shows an increasing trend wit…
Quarkonium production as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity could provide an insight into particle production processes at the partonic level in hadronic collisions. It is believed that multiple partonic interactions play an important role in particle production and affect both soft and hard processes. The study of correlations between quarkonia and charged-particle multiplicity may provide information about this. In this contribution, ALICE measurements of J$/ψ$ and $Υ$ production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity are presented for pp collisions at center-of-mass ene…
The central-arbitrary bin and forward-backward bin multiplicity correlation patterns for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} $= $7.7-62.4$ GeV are investigated within a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model. An interesting observation is that for $\sqrt{s_{NN}} <19.6$ GeV Au+Au collisions, these two correlation patterns both have an increase with the pseudorapidity gap, while for $\sqrt{s_{NN}} >19.6$ GeV Au+Au collisions, they decrease. We mainly discuss the influence of different evolution stages of collision system on the central-arbitrary bin correlations, such as the initial conditions, parto…
It is argued that the superposition approach, where partons are independently emitted from longitudinally extended sources in the early stage, is fully compatible with the experimental results for the forward-backward multiplicity correlations in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76 \textrm{ TeV}$. The pertinent correlation analysis is based on the PhD Thesis of Ref. [1], which includes an unpublished analysis of data taken by the ALICE Collaboration. Our calculations show that in the experimentally covered pseudorapidity range $Δη=1.2$, the initial sources in the backward and forward bins …
The strength of forward-backward (FB) multiplicity correlations is measured by the ALICE detector in proton-proton (pp) collisions at $\sqrt{s}=0.9$, 2.76 and 7 TeV. The measurement is performed in the central pseudorapidity region ($|η| < 0.8$) for the transverse momentum $p_{\rm T}>0.3$ GeV/$c$. Two separate pseudorapidity windows of width ($δη$) ranging from 0.2 to 0.8 are chosen symmetrically around $η=0$. The multiplicity correlation strength ($b_{\rm cor}$) is studied as a function of the pseudorapidity gap ($η_{\rm gap}$) between the two windows as well as the width of these windows. Th…
We analyze the multiplicity correlations between distant forward and backward rapidity regions in relativistic heavy-ion collisions in a superposition framework, where the particle production occurs through independent emission from correlated sources. This in principle allows for inferring information on the long-range forward-backward correlations of the sources in the earliest phase of the collision, based solely on the experimental information on the statistical features of the observed particle distributions. Our three-stage study incorporates the fluctuations of parton production in the …
The initial geometry effect on forward-backward multiplicity correlations $C(N_{f},N_{b})$ is studied in relativistic collisions between light nuclei by using a multiphase transport model (AMPT). It is found that tetrahedron $^{16}$O + $^{16}$O gives a more uniform and symmetrical fireball which produces a more isotropic distribution of final particles after the expansion and evolution, and leads to a small $C(N_{f},N_{b})$. Forward-backward multiplicity correlation could be taken as a useful probe to distinguish the pattern of $α$-clustered $^{16}$O in experiments by comparing the neighboring…
We propose a forward-backward multiplicity correlation function $C^N_{FB}$, which is experimentally accessible, to measure the noncollectivity contribution. We find that $C^N_{FB}$ is sensitive to the jet contribution for the particle-rich case. Surprisingly, it will automatically decrease for the particle-rare case. Our study indicates that similar decreasing trend observed previously is mainly driven by particle scarcity instead of jets. The function is studied in Au+Au collision at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV with a multiphase transport model (AMPT). We find that the jet fraction is about 10% a…
In heavy-ion ({\it A-A}) collisions, the correlations among the particles produced across wide range in rapidity, probe the early stages of the reaction. The analyses of forward-backward multiplicity correlations in these collisions are complicated by several effects, which are absent or minimized in hadron-hadron collisions. This includes effects, such as the centrality selection in the {\it A-A} collisions, which interfere with the measurement of the dynamical correlations. A method, which takes into account the fluctuations in centrality selection, has been utilized to determine the forward…
We analyze a generic model where wounded quarks are amended with strings in which both end-point positions fluctuate in spatial rapidity. With the assumption that the strings emit particles independently of one another and with a uniform distribution in rapidity, we are able to analyze the model semi-analytically, which allows for its detailed understanding. Using as a constraint the one-body string emission functions obtained from the experimental data for collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV, we explore the two-body correlations for various scenarios of string fluctuations. We find that the…
Two-particle pseudorapidity correlations are measured in $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV Pb+Pb, $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV $p$+Pb, and $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV $pp$ collisions at the LHC, with total integrated luminosities of approximately 7 $μ\mathrm{b}^{-1}$, 28 $\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$, and 65 $\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$, respectively. The correlation function $C_{\rm N}(η_1,η_2)$ is measured as a function of event multiplicity using charged particles in the pseudorapidity range $|η|<2.4$. The correlation function contains a significant short-range component, which is estimated and subtracted. After remov…
In this paper we study ATLAS results on underlying event in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=0.9, 7 and 13 TeV. We show that the center-of-mass energy dependences of the charged-particle production sensitive to the underlying event ("transverse" region) and to the hardest partonic interaction ("towards" and "away" regions) in pp collisions can be both understood in terms of the change of the inclusive average multiplicity. Within uncertainties, the corresponding particle production as a function of the leading charged particle shows no significant $\sqrt{s}$-dependence for the three regions once th…
We analyze high multiplicity proton-proton ($pp$) collision data in the framework of the String Percolation Model (SPM) that has been successful in describing several phenomena of multiparticle production, including the signatures of recent discovery of strongly interacting partonic matter, the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP), in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Our study in terms of the ratio of shear viscosity and entropy density ($η/s$) and the (LQCD) predicted signature of QCD change of phase, in terms of effective number of degrees of freedom ($ε/T^4$), reiterates the possibility of strongly i…
Heavy quarks (charm and beauty) are produced in hard-scattering processes and the study of their production in proton--proton (pp) collisions is an important test for calculations based on perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD). Heavy-flavor production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity provides insight into the processes occurring at the partonic level and the interplay between the hard and soft particle production mechanisms in pp collisions. In this contribution, measurements of open heavy-flavor production as a function of multiplicity, via the study of the $\mathrm{D}$-mes…
Inclusive J/$ψ$ yields and average transverse momenta in p-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV are measured as a function of the charged-particle pseudorapidity density with ALICE. The J/$ψ$ mesons are reconstructed at forward $(2.03 < y_{\rm cms} < 3.53)$ and backward ($-4.46 < y_{\rm cms} < -2.96$) center-of-mass rapidity in their dimuon decay channel while the charged-particle pseudorapidity density is measured around midrapidity. The J/$ψ$ yields at forward and backward rapidity normalized to their respective average values increase with…
Multiple hard interactions of partons in the same p+p(\bar p) collision are a useful concept in the description of these collisions at collider energies. In particular, they play a crucial role for the understanding of the background (the so-called underlying event) in the reconstruction of jets. In nucleus-nucleus collisions multiple hard parton interactions and the corresponding production of mini-jets are expected to contribute significantly to the total particle multiplicity. In this article a brief overview of results on particle production at high-pT in proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus …
We report on the production of inclusive $Υ$(1S) and $Υ$(2S) in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV at the LHC. The measurement is performed with the ALICE detector at backward ($-4.46< y_{\rm cms}<-2.96$) and forward ($2.03< y_{\rm cms}<3.53$) rapidity down to zero transverse momentum. The production cross sections of the $Υ$(1S) and $Υ$(2S) are presented, as well as the nuclear modification factor and the ratio of the forward to backward yields of $Υ$(1S). A suppression of the inclusive $Υ$(1S) yield in p-Pb collisions with respect to the yield from pp collisions scaled by the nu…

A search for the critical behavior of strongly interacting matter was performed at the NA61/SHINE experiment by studying event-by-event fluctuations of multiplicity and transverse momentum of charged hadrons produced in inelastic p+p collisions at 20, 31, 40, 80 and 158 GeV/c beam momentum. Results for the energy dependence of the scaled variance of the multiplicity distribution and for two families of strongly intensive measures of multiplicity and transverse momentum fluctuations $Δ[P_{T},N]$ and $Σ[P_{T},N]$ are presented. These quantities were studied in different pseudorapidity intervals,…
We briefly summarize our recent study on the number of constituent quark (NCQ) scaling of hadron elliptic flows in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV. With the inclusion of hadron production via the quark coalescence model at intermediate $p_T$, the viscous hydrodynamics at low $p_T$, and jet fragmentation at high $p_T$, our $Hydro-Coal-Frag$ model provides a nice description of the $p_T$-spectra and differential elliptic flow $v_2(p_T)$ of pions, kaons and protons over the $p_T$ range from 0 to 6 GeV. Our results demonstrate that including the quark coalescence is …
The study of the J/$ψ$ production in pp collisions provides important information on perturbative and non-perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Using high multiplicity pp events, we can study how charmonium production depends on the event activity. These measurements are used to investigate the possible influence of multiple partonic interactions to the J/$ψ$ production and the interplay between soft and hard processes. In this work we report on studies of J/$ψ$ production as a function of event multiplicity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV at mid-rapidity with ALICE. The J/$ψ$ are recons…
The multiplicity and elliptic flow of charged particles produced in Pb-Pb collisions at center of mass energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV from the Large Hadron Collider are studied in a multiphase transport (AMPT) model. With the standard parameters in the HIJING model, which is used as initial conditions for subsequent partonic and hadronic scatterings in the AMPT model, the resulting multiplicity of final charged particles at mid-pseudorapidity is consistent with the experimental data measured by the ALICE Collaboration. This value is, however, increased by about 25% if the final-state partonic…
Analysis of correlation of multiplicities between various rapidity bins is carried out in the framework of a superposition approach consisting of three phases of the ultra-relativistic nuclear collision: early partonic phase, intermediate collective evolution, and statistical hadronization. Simple relations between the moments of produced hadrons and the moments of the sources produced in the initial partonic phase are presented. They involve only a few effective parameters describing the of microscopic dynamics of the system. We illustrate the practicality of the approach with the Glauber mod…
Small system collectivity observed at the LHC energies along with enhancement of strangeness makes high-multiplicity proton+proton (pp) collisions very interesting in order to look for QGP-like features, usually found in heavy-ion collisions. It may be interesting to perform a double differential study of different observables in pp collisions in terms of charged particle multiplicity and event shape in order to understand the new dimensions in high-multiplicity pp physics. We study the correlation between the number of multi-partonic interactions (nMPI), event shape (transverse spherocity) an…
In relativistic heavy-ion collisions, properties of the initial state and effects arising during evolution of the medium, such as a transition between the hadronic and partonic phases, should reflect themselves in event-by-event fluctuations of the number of produced particles. In this paper, recent measurements of several event-by-event observables, namely, dynamical fluctuations of relative particle yields and forward-backward correlations of different types, are discussed. Also, new observables for forward-backward correlation studies are proposed: correlations between ratios of identified …
We report measurements of the inclusive J/$ψ$ yield and average transverse momentum as a function of charged-particle pseudorapidity density ${\rm d}N_{\rm ch}/{\rm d}η$ in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}= 5.02$ TeV with ALICE at the LHC. The observables are normalised to their corresponding averages in non-single diffractive events. An increase of the normalised J/$ψ$ yield with normalised ${\rm d}N_{\rm ch}/{\rm d}η$, measured at mid-rapidity, is observed at mid-rapidity and backward rapidity. At forward rapidity, a saturation of the relative yield is observed for high charged-particle…
Multiplicity correlation measurements provide insight into the dynamics of high energy collisions. Models describing these collisions need these correlation measurements to tune the strengths of the underlying QCD processes which influence all observables. Detectors, however, often possess limited coverage or reduced efficiency that influence correlation measurements in obscure ways. In this paper, the effects of non-uniform detection acceptance and efficiency on the measurement of multiplicity correlations between two distinct detector regions (termed forward-backward correlations) are derive…
Multiplicity and Transverse Spherocity dependence of $\langle p_{\rm T} \rangle$ fluctuations of charged particles in p$-$p collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 and 13 TeV
The increase of strange-particle yields relative to pions versus charged-particle multiplicity in proton-proton (pp) collisions at the LHC is usually described by microscopic or hydrodynamical models as a result of the increasing density of produced partons or strings and their interactions. Instead, we consider the multiple partonic interaction (MPI) picture originally developed in the context of the PYTHIA event generator. We find that strangeness enhancement in PYTHIA is hidden by a large excess of low-$p_{\rm T}$ multi-strange baryons, which mainly results from the hadronization of $u$-qua…
The production mechanism of quarkonia states in hadronic collisions is still to be understood by the scientific community. In high-multiplicity $p+p$ collisions, Underlying Event (UE) observables are of major interest. The Multi-Parton Interactions (MPI) is a UE observable, where several interactions occur at the partonic level in a single $p+p$ event. This leads to dependence of particle production on event multiplicity. If the MPI occurs in a harder scale, there will be a correlation between the yield of quarkonia and total charged particle multiplicity. The ALICE experiment at the Large Had…
It is becoming increasingly clear that initial state effects inherent to collisions of nuclei play an important role in the interpretation of data from heavy ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC. Such effects are more apparent in kinematic regions where the gluon density is expected to be significantly modified in the nucleus. The PHENIX experiment has studied these effects through the production of heavy quarks at backwards, middle, and forward rapidity, where partonic interactions in the nucleus and changes in the gluon structure function influence heavy quark production in different ways. Com…
The observation of long range ridge-like structure in the near-side region of the two particle $Δη-Δϕ$ correlations as measured by LHC experiments in high multiplicity p$-$p collisions indicated towards the presence of collective effects which are similar to that observed in p$-$A(nucleon-nucleus) and A$-$A (nucleus-nucleus) collisions. The two particle correlation between the charged particles in $Δη-Δϕ$ for p$-$p collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and 13 TeV is studied using Pythia 8 event generator within the framework of final-state partonic color reconnection effects as well as the microsco…
Multiplicity, transverse momentum and pseudorapidity dependence of open-heavy flavored hadron production in proton+proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$= 13 TeV using PYTHIA8
Enhanced fluctuations and correlations have been observed in the phase transitions of many systems. Their appearance at the predicted QCD phase transition (especially near the expected critical point) may provide insight into the nature of the phase transition. Recent results from the STAR experiment will be presented with a focus on particle ratio (K/$π$ and p/$π$) fluctuations, forward-backward multiplicity correlations, and balance functions. Also discussed will be possibilities for measuring these correlations and fluctuations in the recently initiated beam energy scan at RHIC.
Proton-proton (pp) collisions have been traditionally used as a baseline measurement in the search for a deconfined state of matter in heavy-ion collisions at ultrarelativistic energies. The unprecedented collision energies that are available at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Laboratory for Nuclear Research (CERN) have illuminated new challenges in understanding the possible formation of droplets of this deconfined matter of partonic degrees of freedom in hadronic collisions, especially in high-multiplicity events. Enhancement of multi-strange particles compared to pions, degr…
Inclusive J/$ψ$ production has been studied with the ALICE detector in p-Pb collisions at the nucleon-nucleon center of mass energy $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV at the CERN LHC. The measurement is performed in the center of mass rapidity domains $2.03<y_{\rm cms}<3.53$ and $-4.46<y_{\rm cms}<-2.96$, down to zero transverse momentum, studying the $μ^+μ^-$ decay mode. In this paper, the J/$ψ$ production cross section and the nuclear modification factor $R_{\rm pPb}$ for the rapidities under study are presented. While at forward rapidity, corresponding to the proton direction, a suppression of …
We present a measurement of azimuthal correlations between inclusive J/$ψ$ and charged hadrons in p-Pb collisions recorded with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. The J/$ψ$ are reconstructed at forward (p-going, 2.03 $<$ y $<$ 3.53) and backward (Pb-going, $-$4.46 $<$ y $<$ $-$2.96) rapidity via their $μ^+μ^-$ decay channel, while the charged hadrons are reconstructed at mid-rapidity ($|η|$ $<$ 1.8). The correlations are expressed in terms of associated charged-hadron yields per J/$ψ$ trigger. A rapidity gap of at least 1.5 units is required between the trigger J/$ψ$ and the associated charge…
