There is a clear scarcity of structural parameters for stellar thick discs, especially for spiral galaxies located in high-density regions, such as galaxy clusters and compact groups. We have modelled the thin and thick discs of 4 edge-on spirals located in Abell clusters: NGC 705, ESO243G49, ESO187G19, LCSBS0496P. Deep I band images of NGC 705 were taken from the HST archive, whereas the remaining images were obtained with the Southern Telescope for Astrophysical Research (SOAR) in Gunn r filter. They reached surface brightness levels of $μ_I \simeq 26.0$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ and $μ_r \simeq 26.5$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$, respectively. Profiles were extracted from the deep images, in directions both parallel and perpendicular to the major axis. Profile fits were carried out at several positions, yielding horizontal and vertical scale parameters for both thin and thick disc components. The extracted profiles and fitted disc parameters vary from galaxy to galaxy. Two galaxies have a horizontal profile with a strong down-turn at outer radii, preventing a simple exponential from fitting the entire range. For the 2 early-type spirals, the thick discs have larger scalelengths than the thin discs, whereas no trend is seen for the later types . Both the thin and thick discs sampled tend to have similar scalelengths and scaleheights when compared to typical field disc galaxies. However, the thin disc parameters of the 2 farthest galaxies, both late-type spirals, may be significantly affected by seeing effects. Taken at face value, our results suggest that environment plays a minor role in determining the thin and thick disc sizes.
In this Letter we present a detailed study of the lensing configuration in the cluster Abell 2218. Four multiple-images systems with measured spectroscopic redshifts have been identified in this cluster. These multiple images are very useful to constrain accurately the mass distribution in the cluster core, but they are also sensitive to the value of the geometrical cosmological parameters of the Universe. Using a simplified maximum likelihood analysis we find 0 < Omega_M < 0.30 assuming a flat Universe, and 0 < Omega_M < 0.33 and w < -0.85 for a flat Universe with dark energy. Interestingly, …
We present our optical multicolor photometry for the nearby cluster of galaxies Abell 2255 with 13 intermediate filters in the BATC system. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in the optical band for more than 7000 sources are achieved down to V ~ 20 in a field of 58' x 58' centered on this rich cluster. Abell 2255 has been recently observed by the SDSS. A method of combining the SDSS photometric data in five broad bands and the BATC SEDs is then explored. The application of the technique of photometric redshift shows that the combined SEDs with higher resolution could lead to a more accu…
An optical photometric observation with the BATC multicolor system is carried out for the central 56' x 56' region of the nearby cluster of galaxies, Abell 2634. We achieved the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 5572 sources detected down to $V \sim 20$ mag, including 178 previously known galaxies, with fourteen filters covering a wavelength range from 3600 Å to 10000 Å. After excluding the foreground and background galaxies, a sample of 124 known members is formed for an investigation of the SED properties. Based on the knowledge of SED properties of member galaxies, we performed the se…
We present constraints on theoretical models of Type Ia SNe using spatially resolved ASCA X-ray spectroscopy of four galaxy clusters: Abell 496, Abell 2199, Abell 3571 & Perseus. All four clusters have central Fe abundance enhancements and an ensemble of abundance ratios are used to show that most of the Fe in the central regions of the clusters comes from SN Ia. At the center of each cluster, simultaneous analysis of spectra from all ASCA instruments shows that the Ni to Fe abundance ratio (normalized by the solar ratio) is ~ 4. We use the Ni/Fe ratio as a discriminator between SN Ia explosio…
We present deep ultraviolet observations of a field containing the cluster Abell 2246 (z=0.225) which provide far-ultraviolet (FUV) images of some of the faintest galaxies yet observed in that bandpass. Abell 2246 lies within the field of view of Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) observations of the quasar HS1700+64, which accumulated over 7100 seconds of UIT FUV exposure time during the Astro-2 mission in March 1995. For objects found on both the FUV and ground-based V-band images, we obtain FUV (l ~ 1520 A) photometry and V-band photometry, as well as mid-UV (l ~ 2490 A) photometry from UI…
We present the results of a search for strong H-alpha emission line galaxies (rest frame equivalent widths greater than 50 A) in the z=0.23 cluster Abell 2390. The survey contains 1189 galaxies over 270 square arcminutes, and is 50% complete at M_r=-17.5+5 log h. The fraction of galaxies in which H-alpha is detected at the 2sigma level rises from 0.0 in the central regions (excluding the cD galaxy) to 12.5+/-8% at R200. For 165 of the galaxies in our catalogue, we compare the H-alpha equivalent widths with their [OII] equivalent widths, from the CNOC1 spectra. The fraction of strong H-alpha em…
Based on 24h high speed photometry of the hybrid PG 1159 star Abell 43, we have detected 6 sighificant pulsations with periods between 2380 s and 6075 s. A short (4h) run on the almost spectroscopic twin NGC 7094 central star resulted in detection of 3 low amplitude pulsations with periods between 2000 s and 5000 s. The results are close to predictions for g-mode pulsations driven by the kappa-mechanism induced by the partial ionization of carbon and oxygen.
We report the search for intracluster light in four Abell Type II/III (non-cD) galaxy clusters: Abell 801, 1234, 1553, & 1914. We find on average that these clusters contain $\sim$ 10% of their detected stellar luminosity in a diffuse component. We show that for two of the clusters the intracluster light closely follows the galaxy distribution, but in the other two cases, there are noticeable differences between the spatial distribution of the galaxies and the intracluster light. We report the results of a search for intracluster tidal debris in each cluster, and note that Abell 1914 in partic…
We present Tully-Fisher observations for 35 rich Abell clusters of galaxies. Results from I band photometry and optical rotation curve work comprise the bulk of this paper. This is the third such data installment of an all-sky survey of 52 clusters in the distance range 50 to 200\h Mpc. The complete data set provides the basis for determining an accurate Tully-Fisher template relation and for estimating the amplitude and direction of the local bulk flow on a 100\h Mpc scale.
We report the initial results of a deep imaging survey of galaxy clusters. The primary goals of this survey are to quantify the amount of intracluster light as a function of cluster properties, and to quantify the frequency of tidal debris. We outline the techniques needed to perform such a survey, and we report findings for the first two galaxy clusters in the survey: Abell 1413, and MKW 7 . These clusters vary greatly in richness and structure. We show that our surface photometry reliably reaches to a surface brightness of μ_v = 26.5 mags per arcsec. We find that both clusters show clear exc…
We performed K band surface photometry for luminous early-type galaxies in a nearby rich cluster ABELL 2199. Combining it with B and R band surface photometry, radial variations of B-R and R-K colours in the galaxies were investigated. It is found that the inner regions of the galaxies are redder in both of B-R and R-K colours. Comparing the radial variations of both of the colours with predictions of Simple Stellar Population (SSP) models for a range of ages and metallicities, it is suggested that the cluster ellipticals have negative metallicity gradients but their age gradients are consiste…
This paper presents deep narrow band photometry of the cluster A2317 (z=0.211) carried out using KPNO 4 m and Steward 2.3 m telescopes. Using rest frame Stromgren photometry, it is determined that A2317 has an unusually high fraction of blue galaxies (the Butcher-Oemler effect) for its redshift (f_B=0.35). We demonstrate that the ratio of blue to red galaxies has a strong dependence on absolute magnitude such that blue galaxies dominate the top of the luminosity function. Spectrophotometric classification shows that a majority of the red galaxies are E/S0's, with a small number of reddened sta…
Using extensive N-body simulations we estimate redshift space power spectra of clusters of galaxies for different cosmological models (SCDM, TCDM, CHDM, Lambda-CDM, OCDM, BSI, tau-CDM) and compare the results with observational data for Abell-ACO clusters. Our mock samples of galaxy clusters have the same geometry and selection functions as the observational sample which contains 417 clusters of galaxies in a double cone of galactic latitude |b| > 30 degrees up to a depth of 240 Mpc/h. The power spectrum has been estimated for wave numbers k in the range 0.03 < k < 0.2 h/Mpc. For k > k_max ~ 0…
We study the dynamical status of the poor, low X-ray luminous galaxy clusters Abell 610, Abell 725, and Abell 796 (at z=0.1, 0.09, and 0.16, respectively), containing diffuse radio sources (relic, relic, and possible halo, respectively). Our analysis is based on new spectroscopic data obtained at the William Herschel Telescope for 158 galaxies, new photometry obtained at the Isaac Newton Telescope with the addition of data recovered from the Data Release 5 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We use statistical tools to select 57, 36, and 26 cluster members and to analyze the kinematics of cluster…
(Shortened Abstract). We analyze a redshift sample of Abell/ACO clusters and compare them with numerical simulations based on the truncated Zel'dovich approximation (TZA), for a list of eleven dark matter (DM) models. For each model we run several realizations, on which we estimate cosmic variance effects. We analyse correlation statistics, the probability density function, and supercluster properties from percolation analysis. As a general result, we find that the distribution of galaxy clusters provides a constraint only on the shape of the power spectrum, but not on its amplitude: a shape p…
The strong lensing modelling of gravitational ``rings'' formed around massive galaxies is sensitive to the amplitude of the external shear and convergence produced by nearby mass condensations. In current wide field surveys, it is now possible to find out a large number of rings, typically 10 gravitational rings per square degree. We propose here, to systematically study gravitational rings around galaxy clusters to probe the cluster mass profile beyond the cluster strong lensing regions. For cluster of galaxies with multiple arc systems, we show that rings found at various distances from the …
We present new V and R-passband CCD photometry of UU Sge and V477 Lyr, the eclipsing binary nuclei of the planetary nebulae Abell 63 and Abell 46, respectively. We have performed a simultaneous analysis of VR light-curves and estimated the effective temperatures for the primary and secondary stars to be 78 000 $\pm$ 3000 and 6136 $\pm$ 240 K for UU Sge, 49 500 $\pm$ 4500 and 3874 $\pm$ 350 K for V477 Lyr. We have also reanalysed the previously measured radial velocities and combined the results with those obtained from the analysis of the light curves to derive absolute parameters of the compo…
We observed the brightest central galaxy (BCG) in the nearby (z=0.0821) cool core galaxy cluster Abell 2597 with the IRAC and MIPS instruments on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The BCG was clearly detected in all Spitzer bandpasses, including the 70 and 160 micron wavebands. We report aperture photometry of the BCG. The spectral energy distribution exhibits a clear excess in the FIR over a Rayleigh-Jeans stellar tail, indicating a star formation rate of ~4-5 solar masses per year, consistent with the estimates from the UV and its H-alpha luminosity. This large FIR luminosity is consistent …
We discuss the observational properties of a remarkably faint triply-imaged galaxy revealed in a deep z-band ACS observation of the lensing cluster A2218. A well-constrained mass model for the cluster, which incorporates the outcome of recent Keck spectroscopic campaigns, suggests that the triple system arises via a z>6 source viewed at high magnification (~x25). Optical and IR photometry from HST and Keck confirms the lensing hypothesis and suggests a significant discontinuity occurs in the spectral energy distribution within 9250-9850A. If this break is associated with Gunn-Peterson absorpti…
We present images from the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope of the Abell 1795 cluster of galaxies. We compare the cD galaxy morphology and photometry of these data with those from existing archival and published data. The addition of a far--UV color helps us to construct and test star formation model scenarios for the sources of UV emission. Models of star formation with rates in the range $\sim5-20M_{\sun}$yr$^{-1}$ indicate that the best fitting models are those with continuous star formation or a recent ($\sim4$ Myr old) burst superimposed on an old population. The presence of dust in the gala…
In this paper we summarize the main properties of the ENACS (the ESO Nearby Abell Cluster Survey), which was one of the ESO Keyprogrammes carried out in the first half of the 1990's, and we discuss some recent work on the properties of the galaxies in the rich clusters in the ENACS sample. We stress the importance of the ENACS sample as a local, volume-limited sample of rich ACO clusters, which in many respects can serve as a local calibration of the properties of optically selected rich clusters. However, by itself the ENACS has also provided several useful insights into the properties of a s…
We present broad-band photometry and provide a quantitative analysis of the structure of galaxies in the inner region of the Abell Cluster 2443 (z~0.1). The galaxy parameters have been derived by fitting a two-component model (Sersic r^{1/n} bulge and exponential disk) to a magnitude-limited sample. Using a new method of analysis which takes into account the effects of seeing on the structural parameters and considers the ellipticity as an active parameter, we avoid systematic errors arising from assumptions of circular symmetry. 76% of the sample galaxies were classified with these models, th…
We present an in-depth analysis of the Butcher-Oemler cluster A2111, including new optical spectroscopy plus a deep Very Large Array (VLA) radio continuum observation. These are combined with optical imaging from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to assess the activity and properties of member galaxies. Prior X-ray studies have suggested A2111 is a head-on cluster merger, a dynamical state which might be connected to the high level of activity inferred from its blue fraction. We are able to directly assess this claim, using our spectroscopic data to identify 95 cluster members among 196 tota…
We combine new narrow band photometry with archival WFPC2 data for A2218 ($z$=0.18) and A2125 ($z$=0.25), two clusters with intermediate redshifts but very different cluster properties, in order to examine the evolution of galaxy populations. A2218 is a dense, elliptical-rich cluster (Bautz-Morgan type II) similar to Coma in its evolutionary appearance; whereas, A2125 is a less dense, more open cluster (Bautz-Morgan type II-III), although similar in richness to A2218. The color-magnitude relation indicates that A2125 has a more developed blue population than A2218 (the Butcher-Oemler effect), …
We have obtained new Tully-Fisher (TF) peculiar velocity measurements for 52 Abell galaxy clusters distributed throughout the sky between ~ 50 and 200 Mpc/h.The measurements are based on I band photometry and optical rotation curves for a sample of 522 spiral galaxies, from which an accurate TF template relation has been constructed. Individual cluster TF relations are referred to the template to compute cluster peculiar motions. The reflex motion of the Local Group of galaxies is measured with respect to the reference frame defined by our cluster sample and the distant portion of the Giovanel…
We present an analysis of the 2-point correlation function, of the X-ray Brightest Abell-type Cluster sample (XBACs; Ebeling et al. 1998) and of the cosmological constraints that it provides. If ξ(r) is modelled as a power-law, we find r_0=26.0 +/- 4.5 Mpc/h and γ=2.0 +/-0.4, with errors corresponding to 2σuncertainties. Only a marginal increase of the correlation amplitude is found as the flux limit is increased from 5x10^{-12} cgs to 12x10^{-12} cgs, thus indicating a weak dependence of the correlation amplitude on the cluster X-ray luminosity. Furthermore, we present a method to predict cor…
SUMMARIZED ABSTRACT: We present a study of the stellar populations and morphologies of galaxies in the core of the galaxy cluster Abell 2218. Integral field spectroscopy was obtained using PMAS/PPAK@3.5m CAHA to obtain a complete flux limited sample of cluster members within its field-of-view (~74"X64"). In addition of 31 galaxies with known redshifts in the outer regions, we built up a final sample of 59 spectroscopically confirmed cluster members. Multiban photometry and detailed morphologies were obtained using deep images taken with the HST/ACS camera in the BVRI and z-bands. The CM diagra…
We present a reconstruction of the mass distribution of galaxy cluster Abell 1689 at z = 0.18 using detected strong lensing features from deep HST/ACS observations and extensive ground based spectroscopy. Earlier analyses have reported up to 32 multiply imaged systems in this cluster, of which only 3 were spectroscopically confirmed. In this work, we present a parametric strong lensing mass reconstruction using 24 multiply imaged systems with newly determined spectroscopic redshifts, which is a major step forward in building a robust mass model. In turn, the new spectroscopic data allows a mor…
We report the discovery of a rich component of dusty star-forming galaxies contaminating the red-sequence in the supercluster system comprising Abell 901a, 901b and A902 at redshift ~0.17. These galaxies do not fit into the colour-density relation, because their preferred habitat is different from that of regular red-sequence galaxies, which are typically dust-poor, old and passively evolving. The dusty red galaxies prefer the medium-density outskirts of clusters while being rare in both the low-density field and the high-density cluster cores. This new result is based on the information conte…
We discuss H-band (1.65 micrometer) near-infrared photometry of the central 3x3h^{-2} Mpc^2 of Abell 1644 to a limiting M_H~M^*_H+3 (throughout this paper H_0=100 h km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}). There are 861 galaxies in the photometric survey region. We also measured radial velocities of 155 galaxies; 141 of these are cluster members within 2.44 h^{-1} Mpc of the cluster center. The cluster velocity dispersion of sigma~1000 km s^{-1} remains constant out to the limiting radius. We find no evidence for substructure in the cluster. The cluster mass within R=2.4 h^{-1} Mpc is 7.6+-1.3x10^{14} h^{-1} M_\o…
Various independent ways of constraining the Hubble constant and the baryonic content of the universe finally converged at a consensus range of values which indicates that at the present epoch the bulk of the universe's baryons is in the form of a warm $\sim$ 10$^6$ K gas - a temperature regime which renders them difficult to detect. The discovery of EUV and soft X-ray excess emission from clusters of galaxies was originally interpreted as the first direct evidence for the large scale presence of such a warm component. We present results from an EUVE Deep Survey (DS) observation of the rich cl…
We performed B and R band surface photometry for E/S0 galaxies in a nearby rich cluster ABELL 2199 to investigate their B-R color gradients (d(B-R)/dlogr). Our aims are to study statistical properties of the color gradients and, by comparing them with those in less dense environments, to examine environmental dependence of color gradients in elliptical galaxies. We studied the distribution of the B-R color gradients in the cluster ellipticals and found that the mean value of the color gradients is -0.09 +- 0.04 mag/dex, which can be converted to a metallicity gradient (dlogZ/dlogr) of ~ -0.3 +…
Various independent ways of constraining key cosmological parameters yielded a consensus range of values which indicates that at the present epoch the bulk of the universe's baryons is in the form of a warm ($\sim$ 10$^6$ K) gas - a temperature regime which renders them difficult to detect. The discovery of EUV and soft X-ray excess emission from clusters of galaxies was originally interpreted as the first direct evidence for the large scale presence of such a warm component. We present results from an EUVE Deep Survey (DS) observation of the rich cluster Abell 2199 in the Lex/B (69 - 190 eV) …
Abell 754, a cluster undergoing merging, was observed in hard X-rays with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) in order to constrain its hottest temperature component and search for evidence of nonthermal emission. Simultaneous modeling of RXTE data and those taken with previous missions yields an average intracluster temperature of $\sim 9$ keV in the 1-50 keV energy band. A multi-temperature component model derived from numerical simulations of the evolution of a cluster undergoing a merger produces similar quality of fit, indicating that the emission measure from the very hot gas componen…
We use extensive new observations of the very rich z ~ 0.4 cluster of galaxies A851 to examine the nature and origin of starburst galaxies in intermediate-redshift clusters. New HST observations, Spitzer photometry and ground-based spectroscopy cover most of a region of the cluster about 10 arcmin across, corresponding to a clustercentric radial distance of about 1.6 Mpc. This spatial coverage allows us to confirm the existence of a morphology-density relation within this cluster, and to identify several large, presumably infalling, subsystems. We confirm our previous conclusion that a very la…
We present a morphological study of galaxies in the A901/902 supercluster from the COMBO-17 survey. A total of 570 galaxies with photometric redshifts in the range 0.155 < z_phot < 0.185 are visually classified by three independent classifiers to M_V=-18. These morphological classifications are compared to local galaxy density, distance from the nearest cluster centre, local surface mass density from weak lensing, and photometric classification. At high local galaxy densities, log(Sigma_10 /Mpc^2) > 1.5, a classical morphology-density relation is found. A correlation is also found between morp…
(abridged) We present the first results of our deep survey of lensing clusters aimed at constraining the abundance of star-forming galaxies at z~6-10. Deep near-IR photometry of two lensing clusters (A1835 and AC114) was obtained with ISAAC/VLT. These images, combined with existing data in the optical bands, including HST images, were used to select very high redshift candidates at z>~6 among the optical-dropouts. We have identified 18(8) first and second-category optical dropouts in A1835 (AC114), detected in more than one filter up to H(Vega)~23.8 (AB~25.2,uncorrected for lensing). Among the…
We explore the amount of obscured star-formation as a function of environment in the A901/902 supercluster at z=0.165 in conjunction with a field sample drawn from the A901 and CDFS fields, imaged with HST as part of the STAGES and GEMS surveys. We combine the COMBO-17 near-UV/optical SED with Spitzer 24um photometry to estimate both the unobscured and obscured star formation in galaxies with Mstar>10^{10}Msun. We find that the star formation activity in massive galaxies is suppressed in dense environments, in agreement with previous studies. Yet, nearly 40% of the star-forming galaxies have r…
New photometry and spectroscopy for the two rich clusters Abell 665 and Abell 2218 are presented and used to establish the Fundamental Plane (FP) for the clusters. The FP for these two clusters adds important knowledge about the properties of E and S0 galaxies in the relatively unexplored redshift interval 0.05 to 0.3. We have compared the FP for A665 and A2218 with the FP for the three clusters CL0024+16, CL1358+62 and MS2053-04 with redshifts between 0.33 and 0.58, and with the FP for the Coma cluster. The scatter around the FP is similar for all six clusters. We find that the slope of the F…
We study the properties and nature of extremely red galaxies (ERO, R-K>5.6) found behind two lensing clusters and compare them with other known galaxy populations. New HST/ACS observations, Spitzer IRAC and MIPS, and Chandra/ACIS observations of the two lensing clusters Abell 1835 and AC114 contemplate our earlier optical and near-IR observations and have been used to study extremely red objects (EROs) in these deep fields. We have found 6 and 9 EROs in Abell 1835 and AC114. Several (7) of these objects are undetected up to the I and/or z band, and are hence ``optical'' drop-out sources. The p…
We constructed the composite Luminosity Function (LF) of cluster galaxies in the g,r and i bands from the photometry of a mixed (Abell and X-ray selected) sample of the cores of 65 clusters, ranging in redshift from 0.05 to 0.25. The composite LF has been obtained from complete samples of ~2200 galaxies in the magnitude range -23<M<-17.5 (-18 in i). Cluster membership has been determined on the basis of color-color plots for each cluster and the resulting outlier counts have been checked against field counts in the same bands. We find that the galaxy density of the environment determines the s…
Thanks to the capabilities of modern telescopes and instrumentation, it is now possible to resolve single stars in external dwarf galaxies, provided they are bright enough. For galactic regions with deep enough photometry, detailed colour-magnitude diagrams are constructed, from which the star formation history and the initial mass function can be inferred by comparison with synthetic diagrams. Both the star formation history and the initial mass function are free parameters of galactic chemical evolution models. In this contribution we show how constraining them through high resolution photom…
We present an analysis of over 2200 V images taken on 14 nights at the Mt. Laguna 1 m telescope of the open cluster M67. Our observations overlap but extend beyond the field analyzed by Gilliland et al. (1991), and complement data recently published by van den Berg et al. (2002) and Stassun et al. (2002). We show variability in the light curves of all 4 of the known W UMa variables on timescales ranging from a day to decades (for AH Cnc). We have modeled the light curve of AH Cnc, and the total eclipses allow us to determine q = 0.16 +0.03/-0.02 and i = 86 +4/-8 degrees. The position of this s…
Using a widely used stellar population synthesis model, we study the ability of using pairs of AB system colours to break the well-known stellar age--metallicity degeneracy and give constraints on the two stellar-population parameters (age and metallicity). The relative age and metallicity sensitivities of AB system colours that relate to u, B, g, V, r, R, i, I, z, J, H, and K bands are presented, and the abilities of various colour pairs for breaking the age--metallicity degeneracy are quantified by an uncertainty parameter (UP) method. Our results suggest that a few pairs of colours can be u…
We have conducted an N-band survey of 14 young stars in the ~30 Myr-old Tucana-Horologium Association to search for evidence of warm, circumstellar dust disks. Using the MIRAC-BLINC camera on the Magellan I (Baade) 6.5-m telescope, we find that none of the stars have a statistically significant N-band excess compared to the predicted stellar photospheric flux. Using three different sets of assumptions, this null result rules out the existence of the following around these post-T Tauri stars: (a) optically-thick disks with inner hole radii of ~<0.1 AU, (b) optically-thin disks with masses of >1…
We present a deep, 42.79 hr image of the nearby, edge-on galaxy NGC 4565 in the Beijing-Arizona-Taipei-Connecticut (BATC) 6660A band using the large-format CCD system on the 0.6m Schmidt telescope at the Xinglong Station of the National Astronomical Observatories of China (NAOC). we obtain a final image that is calibrated to an accuracy of 0.02 mag in zero point, and for which we can measure galaxy surface brightness to an accuracy of 0.25 mag at a surface brightness at 27.5 mag arcsec^-2 at 6660A, corresponding to a distance of 22 kpc from the center of the disk. The integrated magnitude of N…
We consider the possibility of constraining the lifetime of radiatively decaying dark matter particles in clusters of galaxies inspired from generic axions of the Kaluza-Klein type. Such axions have been invoked as a possible explanation for the coronal X-ray emission from the Sun. These axions, or similar particles, can be produced inside stars and some of them remain confined by the deep gravitational potential of clusters of galaxies. Specifically, we consider regions within merging galaxy clusters (Abell 520 and the "Bullet Cluster"), where gravitational lensing observations have identifie…
