We analyze whether a pair of neutral two level atoms can become entangled in a finite time while they remain causally disconnected. The interaction with the e. m. field is treated perturbatively in the electric dipole approximation. We start from an initial vacuum state and obtain the final atomic correlations for the cases where n = 0, 1, or 2 photons are produced in a time t, and also when the final field state is unknown. Our results show that correlations are sizable inside and outside the mutual light cone for n= 1 and 2, and also that quantum correlations become classical by tracing over the field state. For n = 0 we obtain entanglement generation by photon propagation between the atoms, the correlations come from the indistinguishability of the source for n = 1, and may give rise to entanglement swapping for n = 2.
The Feynman propagator has nonzero values outside of the forward light cone. That does not allow messages to be transmitted faster than the speed of light, but it is shown here that it does allow entanglement and mutual information to be generated at space-like separated points. These effects can be interpreted as being due to the propagation of virtual photons outside of the light cone or as a transfer of pre-existing entanglement from the quantum vacuum. The differences between these two interpretations are discussed.
According to quantum field theory, empty space -- the ground state of the theory with all real excitations removed -- is not empty at all, but filled with quantum-vacuum fluctuations. Their presence can manifest itself through a series of phenomena such as the Casimir force, spontaneous emission, or dispersion forces. These fluctuating fields possess correlations between space-time points outside the light cone, i.e. between points which are causally disconnected according to special relativity. A counterintuitive consequence is that two initially uncorrelated quantum objects in empty space (t…
In non-relativistic quantum theories the Lieb-Robinson bound defines an effective light cone with exponentially small tails outside of it. In this work we use it to derive a bound for the time evolution of the correlation function of two local disjoint observables if the initial state has a power-law decay. We show that the exponent of the power-law of the bound is identical to the initial (equilibrium) decay. We explicitly verify this result by studying the full dynamics of the susceptibilities and correlations in the exactly solvable Luttinger model after a sudden quench from the non-interac…
We apply algorithms based on Lieb-Robinson bounds to simulate time-dependent and thermal quantities in quantum systems. For time-dependent systems, we modify a previous mapping to quantum circuits to significantly reduce the computer resources required. This modification is based on a principle of "observing" the system outside the light-cone. We apply this method to study spin relaxation in systems started out of equilibrium with initial conditions that give rise to very rapid entanglement growth. We also show that it is possible to approximate time evolution under a local Hamiltonian by a qu…
There are two important paradigms for defining quantum correlations in quantum information theory, viz. the information-theoretic and the entanglement-separability ones. We find an analytical relation between two measures of quantum correlations, one in each paradigm, and show that only a certain cone-like region on the two-dimensional space spanned by these measures is accessible to pure three-qubit states. The information-theoretic multiparty quantum correlation measure is related to the monogamy considerations of a bipartite information-theoretic quantum correlation measure, while the entan…
We construct the Hayden-Preskill protocol by using a system of spin-1/2 particles and demonstrate information flows of this system which can mimic black holes. We first define an analogous black hole $A$ as a collection of such particles. Second, we take the particles from inside to outside the black hole to define an analogous system of Hawking radiation $B$ as outside particles. When the black hole and the radiation have the maximum entanglement at the Page time, we take an entangled pair system $C$ and $D$. The particles of $C$ fall into the black hole while their counterparts of $D$ remain…
Quantum quenches to or near criticality give rise to the phenomenon of \textit{aging}, manifested by glassy-like dynamics at short times and far from equilibrium. The recent surge of interest in the dynamics of quantum many-body systems has rejuvenated interest in this phenomenon. Motivated by the ubiquitous long-range interactions in emerging experimental platforms, it is vital to study quantum aging in such settings. In this work, we investigate the dynamical universality and aging in the $d$-dimensional $O(N)$ model with the long-range coupling $1/x^{d+σ}$ and in the mean-field limit $N\to\…
The standard derivation of Schroedinger's equation from a Lorentz-invariant Feynman path integral consists in taking first the limit of infinite speed of light and then the limit of short time slice. In this order of limits the light cone of the path integral disappears, giving rise to an instantaneous spread of the wave function to the entire space. We ascribe the failure of Schroedinger's equation to retain the light cone of the path integral to the very nature of the limiting process: it is a regular expansion of a singular approximation problem, because the boundary conditions of the path …
We consider the entanglement dynamics between two Unruh-DeWitt detectors at rest separated at a distance $d$. This simple model when analyzed properly in quantum field theory shows many interesting facets and helps to dispel some misunderstandings of entanglement dynamics. We find that there is spatial dependence of quantum entanglement in the stable regime due to the phase difference of vacuum fluctuations the two detectors experience, together with the interference of the mutual influences from the backreaction of one detector on the other. When two initially entangled detectors are still ou…
We examine the Hawking effect by studying the asymptotic entanglement of two mutually independent two-level atoms placed at a fixed radial distance outside a Schwarzschild black hole in the framework of open quantum systems. We treat the two-atom system as an open quantum system in a bath of fluctuating quantized massless scalar fields in vacuum and calculate the concurrence, a measurement of entanglement, of the equilibrium state of the system at large times, for the Unruh, Hartle-Hawking and Boulware vacua respectively. We find, for all three vacuum cases, that the atoms turn out to be entan…
In locally interacting quantum many-body systems, the velocity of information propagation is finitely bounded and a linear light cone can be defined. Outside the light cone, the amount of information rapidly decays with distance. When systems have long-range interactions, it is highly nontrivial whether such a linear light cone exists. Herein, we consider generic long-range interacting systems with decaying interactions, such as $R^{-α}$ with distance $R$. We prove the existence of the linear light cone for $α>2D+1$ ($D$: the spatial dimension), where we obtain the Lieb--Robinson bound as $\|[…
We consider the time-dependent resonance interaction energy between two identical atoms, one in the ground state and the other in an excited state, and interacting with the vacuum electromagnetic field, during a nonequilibrium situation such as the dynamical atomic self-dressing process. We suppose the two atoms prepared in a correlated, symmetric or antisymmetric, state. Since the atoms start from a nonequilibrium conditions, their interaction energy is time dependent. We obtain, at second order in the atom-field coupling, an analytic expression for the time-dependent resonance interaction en…
In quantum many-body systems with local interactions, quantum information and entanglement cannot spread outside of a linear light cone, which expands at an emergent velocity analogous to the speed of light. Local operations at sufficiently separated spacetime points approximately commute -- given a many-body state, $\mathcal{O}_x(t) \mathcal{O}_y |ψ\rangle \approx \mathcal{O}_y\mathcal{O}_x(t) |ψ\rangle$ with arbitrarily small errors -- so long as $|x-y|\gtrsim vt$, where $v$ is finite. Yet most non-relativistic physical systems realized in nature have long-range interactions: two degrees of …
We consider the time evolution of mixed state correlation measures in two-dimensional conformal field theories, such as logarithmic negativity, odd entropy, and reflected entropy, after quantum quenches of various kinds. These correlation measures, in the holographic context, are all associated to the entanglement wedge cross section. We contrast various classes of conformal field theories, both rational and irrational (pure) conformal field theories. First, for rational conformal field theories, whose dynamics can be well described by the quasi-particle picture, we find all four quantities fo…
We present a physical (gedanken) implementation of a generalized remote state preparation of relativistic quantum field states for an arbitrary set of observers. The prepared states are created in regions that are outside the future light-cone of the generating region. The mechanism, which is based on utilizing the vacuum state of a relativistic quantum field as a resource, sheds light on the well known Reeh-Schlieder theorem, indicating its strong connection with the mathematical phenomenon of superoscillations.
High flux of hyperentangled photons entails collecting the two-photon emission over relatively wide extent in frequency and transverse space within which the photon pairs are simultaneously entangled in multiple degrees of freedom. In this paper, we present a numerical approach to determining the spatial-spectral relative-phase and time-delay maps of hyperentangled photons all over the spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) emission cone. We consider the hyperentangled-photons produced by superimposing noncollinear SPDC emissions of two crossed and coherently-pumped nonlinear crystals. …
In (d+1) dimensional Multiscale Entanglement Renormalization Ansatz (MERA) networks, tensors are connected so as to reproduce the discrete, (d + 2) holographic geometry of Anti de Sitter space (AdSd+2) with the original system lying at the boundary. We analyze the MERA renormalization flow that arises when computing the quantum correlations between two disjoint blocks of a quantum critical system, to show that the structure of the causal cones characteristic of MERA, requires a transition between two different regimes attainable by changing the ratio between the size and the separation of the …
The exponential growth or decay with time of the out-of-time-order commutator (OTOC) is one widely used diagnostic of many-body chaos in spatially-extended systems. In studies of many-body classical chaos, it has been noted that one can define a velocity-dependent Lyapunov exponent, $λ({\bf v})$, which is the growth or decay rate along "rays" at that velocity. We examine the behavior of $λ({\bf v})$ for a variety of many-body systems, both chaotic and integrable. The so-called light cone for the spreading of operators is defined by $λ({\bf \hat n}v_B({\bf \hat n}))=0$, with a generally directi…
