The Coulomb problem for charged massive vector bosons is known to be unstable, the boson falls on the Coulomb center. It is shown that when the charge of the Coulomb center is smeared over a small but finite volume, then instead of the fall there appears a large series of bound states localized inside the volume containing the Coulomb charge. It is shown also that the fall on the Coulomb center is completely suppressed, when the conventional QED vacuum polarization is taken into account. In gauge theories (SU(2), Standard Model) the renormalizability of a theory may be insufficient to guarantee an absence of the wave function collapse. Another interesting feature: the density of charge of vector bosons can have a ``wrong'' sign.
We derive exact expressions for luminosities of massive vector-boson pairs which can be used to describe the cross sections for processes in hadron collisions or $e^+e^-$ annihilation which proceed via two-vector-boson scattering. Our approach correctly takes into account the mutual influence of the emission of one vector boson on the emission of a second one. We show that only approximately the exact luminosities can be factorized into convolutions of single-vector-boson distributions. Numerical results are given and compared to simplified approaches.
NLO QCD corrections to Vector Boson Pair Production via Vector Boson Fusion have recently been calculated and implemented in a parton-level Monte-Carlo program with full experimental cuts. We briefly sketch the elements of the calculation and show numerical results for the Large Hadron Collider.
We present a next-to-leading order calculation of Higgs boson production in vector-boson fusion processes interfaced to shower Monte Carlo programs, implemented according to the POWHEG method.
One of the goals of the upcoming experiments at the LHC is the exploration of electroweak symmetry breaking in all aspects. In particular, the self-couplings of the vector gauge bosons are completely specified in the Standard Model, as are the couplings of the Higgs boson to the vector bosons once the Higgs mass is known. The vector boson fusion mechanism is examined in order to measure the process W + W -> Z + Z which has a favorable signal to noise ratio and which has a major contribution from the quartic coupling WWZZ.
We derive the effective action for pseudoscalar mesons by integrating out vector and axial--vector collective fields in the generating functional of the bosonized NJL--model. The corresponding modifications of the nonlinear effective Lagrangian and the bosonized currents, arising at $O(p^4)$, are discussed.
We compare vector boson fusion and quark antiquark annihilation production of vector boson pairs at the LHC and include the effects of anomalous couplings. Results are given for confidence intervals for anomalous couplings at the LHC assuming that measurements will be in agreement with the standard model. We consider all couplings of the general triple vector boson vertex and their correlations. In addition we consider a gauge invariant dimension-six extension of the standard model. Analytical results for the cross sections for quark antiquark annihilation and vector boson fusion with anomalou…
We have studied the possibility of extracting the $W^+W^-\to W^+W^-$ signal using the process $us\to cd W^+W^-$ as a test case. We have investigated numerically the strong gauge cancellations between signal and irreducible background, analysing critically the reliability of the Equivalent Vector Boson Approximation which is commonly used to define the signal. Complete matrix elements are necessary to study Electro--Weak Symmetry Breaking effects at high $WW$ invariant mass.
A new way of describing massive vector bosons is proposed. It is possible to change the boson propagator in such way that the theory with the vector boson interaction becomes a renormalized one. One example of the efficacy of such a description is shown using the example of the weak interaction of charged currents.
We discuss the meaning of anomalous vector boson self couplings. Implications of present experimental constraints for future colliders are discussed. Results for triple vector boson production at the LHC are given.
A simple derivation of the distributions of the equivalent electroweak vector bosons in leptons and quarks is presented. The applicability of the equivalent vector boson approximation at relatively low energies close to the $W$ and $Z$ boson thresholds is demonstrated. It is shown that the threshold correction to the distribution functions emerges naturally in the theory. Implications of the results for processes with the emission of the gauge bosons are discussed.
In this article we describe simulations of the hadronic decay of Higgs bosons produced in association with vector bosons at linear and hadronic colliders. We use the Monte Carlo at next-to-leading-order MC@NLO matching prescription with the Herwig++ event generator to predict various spectra of the resulting b anti-b pairs and compare our results with leading order and matrix element correction predictions.
An improved effective vector-boson approximation is applied to hadron-hadron collisions. I include an approximative treatment and compare with a complete perturbative calculation for the specific example of $ZZ$ production. The results are also compared with existing approaches. The effective vector-boson approximation in this form is accurate enough to reproduce the complete calculation within 10%. This is true even far away from a possible Higgs boson resonance where the transverse intermediate vector-bosons give the dominant contribution.
The kinematic distributions of the lepton pairs produced in the decay of the Standard Model Higgs to ZZ and WW are related to the polarization fractions of the virtual vector bosons. The full amplitude can be decomposed analytically into a sum of polarized terms. Several observables, in particular the invariant mass of two charged leptons, one from each of the bosons, and the lepton angular distribution in the vector boson center of mass are shown to be sensitive to the boson polarizations.
NLO-QCD corrections to vector boson pair production via weak boson fusion have recently been calculated and implemented into flexible parton-level Monte-Carlo programs. These allow for the computation of cross sections and kinematical distributions within realistic experimental cuts. We summarize the basic elements of the calculation and review phenomenological results for the LHC.
The sensitivity of the ATLAS experiment to low mass SM Higgs produced via Vector Boson Fusion mechanism with $H\to γγ$ is invest igated. A cut based event selection has been chosen to optimize the expected signal significance with this decay mode. A signal significance of 2. 2$ σ$ may be achieved for $M_H=130 \gev$ with 30 fb$^{-1}$ of accumulated luminosity.
We replace the scalar Higgs doublet with a vector Higgs boson doublet to the unified electroweak W-S model and find most of important features of W-S model are kept unchanged only the Higgs boson now become vector bosons. Lorentz invariance has been carefully discussed. The most important challenge is there will be three massless vector Higgs bosons. The remarkable effect is the possible suppression of the flavorchanging neutral current compare to the multi-Higgs model.
We compute the resummed hadronic transverse energy (E_T) distribution due to initial-state QCD radiation in vector boson and Higgs boson production at hadron colliders. The resummed exponent, parton distributions and coefficient functions are treated consistently to next-to-leading order. The results are matched to fixed-order calculations at large E_T and compared with parton-shower Monte Carlo predictions at Tevatron and LHC energies.
In this contribution the developments in the description of vector boson plus jets signatures at hadron colliders in recent years are summarised. Particular focus is put on its relevance as background to top physics.
The search for the Higgs boson is one of the main physics goals of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its two multi-purpose experiments, ATLAS and CMS. Vector boson fusion is the second largest production process for a standard model Higgs boson at the LHC and offers excellent means for background suppression. This paper gives an overview of the prospects of Higgs boson searches using vector boson fusion at the LHC. For a standard model Higgs boson, the decay channels H->tautau, H->WW and H->gammagamma are discussed. The discovery potential in the framework of the MSSM is summarized.
The production of Z bosons via Vector Boson Fusion at the LHC collider at 10 TeV centre-of-mass energy has been studied. The aim is to investigate the possibility to isolate a known Standard Model process to be used as reference for the measurement of the detector performance for the search of the Higgs Boson produced via Vector Boson Fusion. The signal to background ratio has been estimated considering only the dominant sources of background.
We derive the width of the Higgs boson into vector bosons. General formulas are derived both for the on-shell decay H -> VV as well for the off-shell decays, H -> V^* V and H -> V^* V^*, where V=γ,W,Z. For the off-shell decays the width of the decaying vector boson is properly included. The formulas are valid both for the Standard Model as well as for arbitrary extensions. As an example we study in detail the gauge-invariant effective Lagrangian models where we can have sizable enhancements over the Standard Model that could be observed at LEP.
We study the equation of motion of neutral vector bosons bearing a magnetic moment (MM). The effective rest mass of vector bosons is a decreasing function of the magnetic field intensity. Consequently a diffuse condensation of the bosons appears below a critical value of the field. For typical values of densities and magnetic fields the magnetization is positive and the neutral boson system can maintain a magnetic field self-consistently. A discussion of the relevance in astrophysics is presented.
We estimate the power of the LHC in probing effects of strongly-interacting symmetry breaking sector through vector boson scattering in a complete partonic analysis.
Spontanous symmetry breaking usually gives spin 0 Goldstone bosons for the case of internal symmetries and spin 1/2 fermions for the supersymmetry. The spontaneous breaking of higher dimensional Lorentz symmetry can give vector Goldstone boson in 4-dimension.
Inspired by the Goldstone equivalence gauge, we study the thermal corrections to an originally massive vector boson by checking the poles and branch cuts. We find that part of the Goldstone boson is spewed out from the longitudinal polarization, becoming a branch cut which can be approximated by the "quasi-poles" in the thermal environment. In this case, physical Goldstone boson somehow partly recovers. We also show the Feynmann rules for the "external legs" of these vector boson as well as the recovered Goldstone boson, expecting to simplify the vector boson participated process calculations …
Tree-level scattering amplitudes of longitudinally polarized electroweak vector bosons in the Standard Model are calculated using Mathematica package Feyncalc. The modifications of low-energy theorems for longitudinally polarized W and Z in the Standard Model are discussed.
In the standard Higgs model of electroweak symmetry breaking, the Higgs boson is associated with both vector-boson and fermion mass generation. In contrast, we discuss a two-Higgs-doublet model in which these masses are associated with two different scalar bosons. We show that the Higgs boson associated with vector-boson mass generation produces a {\it dip\/} in the cross section for $t\bar t\to ZZ$ via a final-state interaction. Such a dip will be difficult to observe at the LHC/SSC.
Deviations from SM expectations in the Higgs sector can be parameterized by an effective Lagrangian. The corresponding anomalous couplings have been implemented in a Monte Carlo program for Higgs production in vector boson fusion, at NLO QCD accuracy. It allows to study anomalous coupling effects for production and decay of the Higgs boson. We analyze deviations allowed by LEP data and study a new azimuthal angle variable which directly measures the interference between CP-even, CP-odd and SM couplings.
Discrepancies in measurements of the QCD running coupling constant are consistent with a new vector gauge boson coupling to baryon number with strength aB~0.1. Upsilon decays constrain such a boson to have a mass greater than about 35 GeV. It is difficult to observe such a boson in Z decays, e+e- annihilation, or hadronic interactions.
We study the observability of new interactions which modify Higgs-pair production via vector-boson fusion processes at the LHC and at future proton-proton colliders. In an effective-Lagrangian approach, we explore in particular the effect of the operator $h^2 W_{μν}^a W^{a,μν}$, which describes the interaction of the Higgs boson with transverse vector-boson polarization modes. By tagging highly boosted Higgs bosons in the final state, we determine projected bounds for the coefficient of this operator at the LHC and at a future 27 TeV or 100 TeV collider. Taking into account unitarity constrain…
We discuss nonfactorizable QCD corrections to Higgs boson production in vector boson fusion at the Large Hadron Collider. We point out that these corrections can be computed in the eikonal approximation retaining all the terms that are not suppressed by the ratio of the transverse momenta of the tagging jets to the total center-of-mass energy. Our analysis shows that in certain kinematic distributions the nonfactorizable corrections can be as large as a percent making them quite comparable to their factorizable counter-parts.
We discuss weak-vector-boson scattering, at next-to-leading order in QCD, within the framework of hadronic structure functions. We use this approach to calculate the Higgs-boson production cross section via vector-boson fusion at the LHC/SSC; we find a modest increase over the leading-order prediction. We also give expressions for the distribution of vector bosons in a proton (effective-$W$ approximation) including ${\cal O} (α_s)$ corrections.
Two-loop corrections to the pole mass of the vector boson and the pole masses and the magnetic moments of fermions are calculated in the framework of an effective field theory of massive Yang-Mills fields interacting with fermions. It is shown that the limit of vanishing vector boson mass is finite for all these quantities. Implications of the obtained results are discussed.
This mini review aims to outline the main experimental and theoretical results related with the search for a new light vector boson proposed as a solution of the muon $g-2$ anomaly. Additionally, I consider a model with infinite number of light vector bosons which can explain the anomaly, while still remaining consistent with current experimental bounds.
One-loop radiative Majorana neutrino masses through the exchange of scalars have been considered for many years. We show for the first time how such a one-loop mass is also possible through the exchange of vector gauge bosons. It is based on a simple variation of a recently proposed $SU(2)_N$ extension of the standard model, where a vector boson is a candidate for the dark matter of the Universe.
By considering left-right (L-R) asymmetries we study the capabilities of lepton colliders in searching for new exotic vector bosons. Specifically we study the effect of a doubly charged bilepton boson and an extra neutral vector boson appearing in a 3-3-1 model on the L-R asymmetries for the processes $e^-e^-\to e^-e^-$, $μ^-μ^-\toμ^-μ^-$ and $e^-μ^-\to e^-μ^-$ and show that these asymmetries are very sensitive to these new contributions and that they are in fact powerful tools for discovery this sort of vector bosons.
We investigate the production of beyond-the-standard-model color-sextet vector bosons at the Large Hadron Collider and their decay into a pair of same-sign top quarks. We demonstrate that the energy of the charged lepton from the top quark semi-leptonic decay serves as a good measure of the top-quark polarization, which, in turn determines the quantum numbers of the boson and distinguishes vector bosons from scalars.
The positive weight next-to-leading-order matching formalism (POWHEG) is applied to Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) and the related Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion process in the Herwig++ Monte Carlo event generator. This scheme combines parton shower simulation and next-to-leading-order calculation in a consistent way which only produces positive weight events. The simulation contains a full implementation of the truncated shower required to correctly model soft emissions in an angular-ordered parton shower.
We propose a novel experimental method to produce and detect weakly interacting light vector bosons using coherent processes in refractive media. A light vector boson would be produced by a laser photon scattered at a plane interface between two media of different dielectric properties and will be converted back to photon in the similar scattering process. The effect depends strongly on the indices of refraction of the two media. If incident and recovered photons were traveling through extremely high vacuums, limits on the existence of several light vector bosons could be substantially improve…
The contribution of gg->H+jets production process to the vector boson fusion production of the Higgs boson, VV->H, at LHC was evaluated with the ALPGEN generator and the PYTHIA shower Monte Carlo including a jet-parton matching procedure. After the experimental like event selections applied at PYTHIA particle level, the contribution was found to be 4-5 % for a Higgs boson mass of 120 GeV.
The electroweak production processes of vector bosons, $e^+ e^- \rightarrow Z γ$, $γe \rightarrow Ze$, and $γe \rightarrow W ν$ are considered simultaneousely and in the Standard model the covariant polarization density matrices of vector bosons for these processes are obtained explicitly from one of the processes, $γe \rightarrow Z e$. The effect of the photon polarization as well as the vector meson polarization is considered and some special cases are discussed.
We analyse diffractive electroweak vector boson production in hadronic collisions and show that the single diffractive W boson production asymmetry in rapidity is a particularly good observable at the LHC to test the concept of the flavour symmetric pomeron parton distributions. It may also provide an additional constraint for the parton distribution functions in the proton.
We investigate the high energy behaviour of vector boson scattering in the electroweak sector of the standard model. In analogy with the BFKL analysis in QCD we compute production amplitudes in the multi-Regge limit and derive, for the vacuum exchange channel, the integral equation for vector particle scattering. We also derive and solve the bootstrap equations for the isospin-1 exchange channel, both for the reggeizing charged and non-reggeizing neutral vector bosons.
Vector-boson scattering into two Z bosons at the LHC is a key channel for the exploration of the electroweak sector of the Standard Model. It allows for the full reconstruction of the scattering process but at the price of a huge irreducible background. For the first time, we present full next-to-leading-order predictions for $pp \to e^+e^-μ^+μ^-jj+X$ including all electroweak and QCD contributions for vector-boson scattering signal and irreducible background. The results are presented in the form of cross sections and differential distributions. A particular emphasis is put on the newly compu…
We study scattering of the electroweak gauge bosons in 5D warped models. Within two different models we determine the precise manner in which the Higgs boson and the vector resonances ensure the unitarity of longitudinal vector boson scattering. We identify three separate scales that determine the dynamics of the scattering process in all cases. For a quite general background geometry of 5D, these scales can be linked to a simple functional of the warp factor. The models smoothly interpolate between a `composite' Higgs limit and a Higgsless limit. By holographic arguments, these models provide…
We present a study of Higgs hadroproduction through vector-boson fusion at the NLO in QCD matched with parton showers. We discuss the matching systematics affecting this process through a comparison of the aMC@NLO predictions with the POWHEG and the pure-NLO ones.
In this paper we study the possible searches at colliders using Vector Boson Fusion topology in the context of Simplified Models signatures. We examine the possible physics reach of these searches with regard to monojet-type searches, and determine how these two signatures are complementary.
We study vector boson pair production at $LHC$ and $SSC$, taking into account the effects generated by the anomalous vector boson and Higgs couplings induced by the operators ${\cal O}_W$ and ${\cal O}_{UW}$, which are the only dim=6 operators preserving $SU(2)_c$. These operators lead to enhanced production of transverse vector bosons, as opposed to the enhanced production of longitudinal gauge bosons, induced in case $M_H\gsim 1\ TeV$, by dim=4 terms already existing in the Standard Model lagrangian. For vector boson pair masses larger than $1\ TeV$, we establish very simple approximate expr…
The leading $m_H$ radiative correction to the Higgs decay width into a pair of weak vector bosons is calculated at the two--loop level, using the equivalence theorem in Landau gauge. The result indicates the breakdown of perturbation theory if the Higgs boson is heavier than $\sim 930$ GeV, in spite of the smallness of the one--loop radiative correction.
Accurate measurement of spin-dependent parton distributions in production of electroweak bosons with polarized proton beams at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider depends on good understanding of QCD radiation at small transverse momenta $q_T$ of vector bosons. We present a theoretical formalism for small-$q_T$ resummation of the cross sections for production of virtual photons, W, and Z bosons, with the subsequent decay of these bosons into lepton pairs, for arbitrary longitudinal polarizations of the proton beams.
We perform a detailed analysis of next-to-leading order plus parton-shower matching in vector-boson-fusion WW production including leptonic decays. The study is performed in the Herwig 7 framework interfaced to VBFNLO 3, using the angular-ordered and dipole-based parton-shower algorithms combined with the subtractive and multiplicative matching algorithms.
Vector-boson fusion processes are an important tool for the study of electroweak symmetry breaking at hadron colliders, since they allow to distinguish a light Higgs boson scenario from strong weak boson scattering. We here consider the channels WW->ZZ and ZZ->ZZ as part of electroweak Z boson pair production in association with two tagging jets. We present the calculation of the NLO QCD corrections to the cross sections for p p -> e+ e- mu+ mu- + 2 jets and p p -> e+ e- nu_mu nubar_mu + 2 jets via vector-boson fusion at order alpha_s alpha^6, which is performed in the form a NLO parton-level …
We show vector boson transverse momentum distributions at the Tevatron, obtained by running the HERWIG Monte Carlo event generator with matrix-element corrections. We compare our results with some recent D0 and CDF data.
We consider higher-order QCD corrections for vector boson production at hadron colliders. We present recent results on transverse-momentum resummation for Z production. Moreover we show numerical results from a new fully exclusive next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) calculation.
The vector boson fusion process leads to two forward/backward jets (tag jets) and the produced state, a Higgs boson in this case, moving slowly in the p-p C.M. frame at the LHC. For the case of Higgs decaying to W+W (W*) with Higgs mass below 180 GeV, the W bosons have low momentum in the Higgs C.M. For the case of W leptonic decays, this fact allows for an approximate reconstruction of the two final state neutrinos. In turn, those solutions then provide additional kinematic cuts against background.
The possibility that higher dimensional field theories are broken spontaneously, through the usual Nambu-Goldstone mechanism, to 4-dimension is explored. As a consequence, vector Goldstone bosons can arise in this breaking of Lorentzian symmetry from higher dimension to 4-dimension. This can provide a simple mechanism for reduction to 4-dimension in theories with extra dimensions.
We inquire if the total decay rate of neutral vector mesons can contain relevant off-shell contributions from the triangle anomaly. The answer seems to be affirmative for the case of J/Psi, and as a byproduct we get estimates of the decay width for neutral pions.
