We present $UBVRI$ CCD photometry and optical spectra of the type Ia supernova SN 2003hx which appeared in the galaxy NGC 2076, obtained till $\sim$ 146 days after the epoch of $B$ band maximum. The supernova reached at maximum brightness in $B$ band on JD 245 2893 $\pm$ 1.0 with an apparent magnitude of 14.92 $\pm$ 0.01 mag which was estimated by making template fits to the light curves. SN 2003hx is an example of a highly reddened supernova with $E(B-V)$ = 0.56 $\pm$ 0.23. We estimate $R_v$ = 1.97 $\pm$ 0.54 which indicates the small size of dust particles as compared to their galactic counterparts. The luminosity decline rate is $Δm_{15}(B)$ = 1.17 $\pm$ 0.12 mag and the absolute $B$ band magnitude obtained from the luminosity versus decline rate relation (Phillips et al. 1999) is $M^B_{max}$ = -19.20 $\pm$ 0.18 mag. The peak bolometric luminosity indicates that $\sim$ 0.66 $M_\odot$ mass of $^{56}$ Ni was ejected by the supernova. The spectral evolution indicates the supernova to be a normal type Ia event.
Using the NIRSPEC spectrograph at Keck II, we have obtained infrared echelle spectra covering the range 1.5-1.8 micron for the moderately reddened bulge globular clusters NGC 6342 and NGC 6528, finding [Fe/H]= -0.60 and -0.17 dex, respectively. We measure an average alpha-enhancement of approx +0.33 dex in both clusters, consistent with previous measurements on other metal rich bulge clusters, and favoring the scenario of a rapid bulge formation and chemical enrichment. We also measure very low 12C/13C isotopic ratios (approx 5 in NGC 6342 and approx 8 in NGC 6528), suggesting that extra-mixin…
We present results from NICMOS Hubble Space Telescope observations of the reddened bulge globular clusters NGC 6528, Terzan 5, Liller 1, UKS 1 and Terzan 4, obtained through the filters F110W and F160W (nearly equivalent to J and H). For the first time the turnoff region of Liller 1 and the main sequence of Terzan 5 and Terzan 4 are reached, as well as the horizontal branch of UKS 1. The magnitude difference between the turnoff and the red horizontal branch $Δm_{110}=m_{110}^{HB}- m_{110}^{TO}$ is used as an age indicator. From comparisons with new isochrones in the NICMOS photometric system, …
The spectral and reddening properties of 211 highly reddened proper motion members with $V < 15$ mag in 6 young galactic star clusters are investigated using low resolution spectroscopic, broad-band $UBVRIJHK$ and mid-IR data. We report emission features in CaII HK and HI lines for a sample of 29 stars including 11 stars reported for the first time and also provide either a new or more reliable spectral class for a sample of 24 stars. CaII triplet width measurements are used to indicate the presence of an accretion disk for a dozen stars and to hint luminosity for a couple of stars. On the bas…
In a sample of six young open clusters we investigated 1753 objects using the narrow band, three filter Delta a photometric system resulting in the detection of eleven bona-fide magnetic chemically peculiar (CP) stars and five Be or metal-weak stars. The results for the distant cluster NGC 3105 is most important because of the still unknown influence of the global metallicity gradient of the Milky Way. These findings confirm that CP stars are present in open clusters of very young ages (log t > 6.90) at galactocentric distances up to 11.4 kpc. For all programme clusters the age, reddening, and…
Accurate and deep BVI CCD photometry is presented for the core regions of six southern compact open clusters (supplemented in one case by U and R bands). These clusters generally have only scanty photometric data published, in some case only photoelectric or photographic. Together with adoption of modern reference isochrones, this has allowed us to derive improved values for their distance, reddening, age and main sequence morphology.
We have investigated 1008 objects in the area of five intermediate age open clusters (NGC 2099, NGC 3114, NGC 6204, NGC 6705 and NGC 6756) via the narrow band Delta a-system. The detection limit for photometric peculiarity is very low (always less than 0.009mag) due to the high number of individual frames used (193 in total). We have detected six peculiar objects in NGC 6705 and NGC 6756 from which one in the latter is almost certainly an unreddened late type foreground star. The remaining five stars are probably cluster members and bona fide chemically peculiar objects (two are lambda Bootis …
We present multi-colour broad band CCD photometric observations of a few thousands of stars located region of the galactic globular clusters NGC 1904 and NGC 6341. These observations are used to generate their deep colour magnitude diagrams (CMDs) to study overall morphologies of sub giant, red giant, asymptotic giant and horizontal branches. We also determine the main sequence morphology of the NGC 6341. A comparison of their CMDs with the theoretical isochrones given by Demarque et al. (1996) indicates an age of 14 and 16 Gyr for NGC 1904 and NGC 6341 GGCs respectively. We present a new meth…
We present CCD photometry and proper motion studies of the two open star clusters NGC 1960 (M 36) and NGC 2194. Fitting isochrones to the colour magnitude diagrams, for NGC 1960 we found an age of t=16 Myr and a distance of roughly d=1300 pc and for NGC 2194 t=550 Myr and d=2900 pc, respectively. We combined membership determination by proper motions and statistical field star subtraction to derive the initial mass function of the clusters and found slopes of Gamma=-1.23 +/- 0.17 for NGC 1960 and Gamma=-1.33 +/- 0.29 for NGC 2194. Compared to other IMF studies of the intermediate mass range, t…
We present a CCD investigation of the poorly known SMC young Globular Cluster NGC 458. The NTT data, presented here, allowed us to study in detail the more internal regions of the cluster which are less contaminated by the field. On the basis of theoretical isochrones, a preliminary evaluation of the age is also given.
We present UBVRI CCD photometry in the region of the open clusters NGC 637 and NGC 957. The radii are found to be 4.2 arcmin and 4.3 arcmin. Their reddenings E(B-V) are 0.64+/-0.05 mag and 0.71+/-0.05 mag and their distances, from main sequence fitting are 2.5+/-0.2 kpc and 2.2+/-0.2 kpc. Comparison with Z=0.02 isochrones leads to an age of 10+/-5 Myr for both clusters. Combining our photometry with 2MASS JHK shows the reddening law in these directions to be normal. Mass function slopes of x=1.65+/-0.20 and 1.31+/-0.50 are derived for the clusters, both of which are found to be dynamically rel…
We present the results of BVRI photometry of two galaxies with active star formation: NGC 834 and NGC 1134. Combined color index Q_{BVI} was used to investigate the photometrical structure of the galaxies. Index Q_{BVI} is not affected by internal extinction and is sensitive to the presence of blue stars. Ring-like region with active star formation at 15" from the center reveals itself in the Q_{BVI} map of NGC 834. Three-arm spiral structure is well-seen on the Q_{BVI} map of NGC 1134. We propose to use the combined indexes Q_{BVI} and similarly defined indices as a tracers of Star Formation …
The detection of magnetic chemically peculiar (CP2) stars in open clusters of the Milky Way can be used to study the influence of different galactic environments on the (non-)presence of peculiarities, which has to be taken into account in stellar evolution models. Furthermore it is still unknown if the CP2 phenomenon evolves, i.e. does the strength of the peculiarity feature at 5200A, increase or decrease with age. We have observed eight young to intermediate age open clusters in the Delta a photometric system. This intermediate band photometric system samples the depth of the 5200A, flux dep…
We present CCD photometry and proper motion studies of the three open star clusters NGC 4103, NGC 5281, and NGC 4755 (kappa Cru). By fitting isochrones to the colour magnitude diagrams, we found that all three objects are young open star clusters with ages of at most t=45 Myr. They are located at distances from approx. 1600 pc to 2200 pc, derived from distance moduli (m-M)_0 ranging from 11 mag to 12 mag. We combined membership determinations based on proper motions and statistical field star subtraction to derive the initial mass function (IMF) of the clusters. The shape of the IMFs could be …
We present CCD photometric and mass function study of 9 young Large Magellanic Cloud star clusters namely NGC 1767, NGC 1994, NGC 2002, NGC 2003, NGC 2006, SL 538, NGC 2011, NGC 2098 and NGC 2136. The BVRI data reaching down to V ~ 21 mag, are collected from 3.5-meter NTT/EFOSC2 in sub-arcsec seeing conditions. For NGC 1767, NGC 1994, NGC 2002, NGC 2003, NGC 2011 and NGC 2136, broad band photometric CCD data are presented for the first time. Seven of the 9 clusters have ages between 16 to 25 Myr while remaining two clusters have ages $32\pm4$ Myr (NGC 2098) and $90\pm10$ Myr (NGC 2136). For 7 …
We present CCD UBVI observations obtained in the field of the previously unstudied northern open clusters NGC 133 and NGC 1348. We argue that NGC 133 is a heavily contaminated cluster, for which we identify 13 candidate members down to $V$=14.50 mag on the basis of the position in the two-color Diagram . Membership has been checked against proper motions from Tycho~2, whenever available. The cluster turns out to have a reddening E$(B-V)=0.60\pm0.10$ mag, to be $630\pm150$ pc distant from the Sun, and to have an age less than 10 Myrs. NGC 1348 is a more reddened cluster (E$(B-V)=0.85\pm0.15$ ma…
We present JHKs near-infrared CCD photometric study for the Galactic open clusters NGC 1641 and NGC 2394. These clusters have never been studied before, and we provide, for the first time, the cluster parameters; reddening, distance, metallicity and age. NGC 1641 is an old open cluster with age 1.6 +/- 0.2 Gyr, metallicity [Fe/H] = 0.0 +/- 0.2 dex, distance modulus (m-M)_0 = 10.4 +/- 0.3 mag (d = 1.2 +/- 0.2 kpc), and reddening E(B-V) = 0.10 +/- 0.05 mag. The parameters for the other old open cluster NGC 2394 are estimated to be age = 1.1 +/- 0.2 Gyr, [Fe/H] = 0.0 +/- 0.2 dex, (m-M)_0 = 9.1 +/…
We present CCD photometry and a proper motion study of the young open star cluster, NGC 581 (M 103). Fitting isochrones to the colour magnitude diagram, we found an age of 16 +/- 4 Myr and a distance of roughly 3 kpc for this cluster. The proper motion study identifies 77 stars of V=14.5 mag or brighter to be cluster members. We combine membership determination by proper motions and statistical field star subtraction to derive the IMF of the cluster and find a quite steep slope of Gamma=-1.80.
Images recorded through J, H, Ks, 2.2 micron continuum, and 2.3 micron CO filters are used to investigate the stellar contents of the low Galactic latitude globular clusters NGC 6528, Liller 1, Djorgovski 1, and HP 1, as well as surrounding bulge fields. Metallicities are estimated for the latter three clusters by comparing the colors and CO indices of giant branch stars with those in other clusters and the bulge, while reddenings are estimated from the colors of bright bulge stars in the surrounding fields. In some cases the metallicities and reddenings are significantly different from previo…
We present a study of the photometric variability of spectroscopically confirmed supergiants in NGC 300, comprising 28 epochs extending over a period of five months. We find 15 clearly photometrically variable blue supergiants in a sample of nearly 70 such stars, showing maximum light amplitudes ranging from 0.08 to 0.23 magnitudes in the V band, and one variable red supergiant. We show their light curves, and determine semi-periods for two A2 Ia stars. Assuming that the observed changes correspond to similar variations in the bolometric luminosity, we test for the influence of this variabilit…
We present photometric observations of two shell galaxies, NGC 474 and NGC 7600. We examine the photometric colours and surface brightnesses of the shells and their host galaxies, and the isophotal parameters of each galaxy. In the case of NGC 474, we find that the shell formation is consistent with a merger origin although it is possible that the close companion NGC 470 is contributing to the shell system via mass transfer. NGC 7600 exhibits shell geometry and colours which also favour a merger origin.
We continue our survey for magnetic chemically peculiar (CP2) stars in galactic open clusters to shed more light on their origin and evolution. To study the group of CP2 stars, it is essential to find these objects in different galactic environments and at a wide range of evolutionary stages. The knowledge of open clusters ages and metallicities can help to find a correlation of these parameters with the (non-)presence of peculiarities which has to be taken into account in stellar evolution models. The intermediate band Delta a photometric system samples the depth of the 5200A flux depression …
We present a UBV CCD photometric study of four open clusters, NGC 7245, King 9, IC 166 and King 13, located between $l = 90^o - 135^o$. All are embedded in a rich galactic field. NGC 7245 and King 9 are close together in the sky and have similar reddenings. The distances and ages are: NGC 7245, 3.8$\pm$0.35 kpc and 400 Myr; King 9 (the most distant cluster in this quadrant) 7.9$\pm$1.1 kpc and 3.0 Gyr. King 13 is 3.1$\pm$0.3 kpc distant and 300 Myr old. King 9 and IC 166 (4.8$\pm$0.5 kpc distant & 1 Gyr old) may be metal poor clusters (Z=0.008), as estimated from isochrone fitting. The average…
Based on 13 nights of observations of four fields in NGC 300, we have set up an extensive sequence of stars with accurate BVI photometry covering a relatively large (25 x 25 arcmin) region centered on this galaxy. This sequence of standard stars is very useful for calibrating the photometry of variable stars and other objects in NGC 300 and other galaxies obtained from wide field mosaic images. Our standard star list contains B, V and I measurements for 390 stars. The accuracy of the zero points in the V filter and B-V color is better than 0.02 mag, and about 0.03 mag for the V-I color. We fou…
We present photometric and spectroscopic studies of the white dwarf (WD) populations in the intermediate-age open clusters NGC 6633 and NGC 7063 as part of the ongoing Lick-Arizona White Dwarf Survey (LAWDS). Using wide-field CCD imaging, we locate 41 candidate WDs in the two cluster fields: 32 in NGC 6633, and 9 in NGC 7063. Spectroscopic observations confirm 13 of these candidates to be bona-fide WDs. We describe in detail our Balmer line fitting technique for deriving effective temperatures and surface gravities from optical DA WD spectra and apply the technique to the 11 DA WDs in the samp…
We present uvby-beta CCD photometry of the field of the open cluster NGC 1893. Our photometry is deep enough to cover the complete main sequence B spectral type. We identify ~50 very likely members of the cluster down to spectral type B9-A0, some of which have much higher reddenings than the average. We derive a color excess E(b-y) = 0.33+-0.03 and a dereddened distance modulus V_0 - M_V = 13.9+-0.2. From the beta index, we identify several candidates as emission-line stars, for which we have obtained spectroscopy. Three of them display spectra corresponding to spectral type F, but showing H-a…
We present UBV CCD observations obtained in the field of the northern open cluster NGC 1220, for which little information is available. We provide also BV CCD photometry of a field 5$^{\prime}$ northward of NGC 1220 to take into account field star contamination. We argue that NGC 1220 is a young compact open cluster, for which we estimate a core radius in the range $1.5-2.0$ arcmin. We identify 26 likely candidate members with spectral type earlier than $A5$, down to $V_o$=15.00 mag on the basis of the position in the two-colour Diagram and in the Colour Magnitude Diagrams (CMDs). By analyzing…
We present the results of detailed surface photometry of NGC 3808B and NGC 6286 - two spiral galaxies with possibly forming ring-like structures rotating around major axes of the galaxies. The formation of rings in NGC 3808B and NGC 6286 being accompanied by accretion of matter on galactic disk results in some interesting gasdynamical and stellardynamical effects in these galaxies. One can note, for instance, peculiar rotation curve of NGC 3808B gaseous disk; strong infrared and H-alpha emission from the galaxies; bending and flaring stellar disks in both galaxies. Our observations clearly ill…
We present CCD UBVI photometry and high-resolution spectroscopy of the intermediate age open cluster NGC 3960. The colour - magnitude diagrams (CMDs) derived from the photometric data and interpreted with the synthetic CMD method allow us to estimate the cluster parameters. We derive: age = 0.9 or 0.6 Gyr (depending on whether or not overshooting from convective regions is included in the adopted stellar models), distance (m-M)0 = 11.6 +/- 0.1, reddening E(B-V) = 0.29 +/- 0.02, differential reddening Delta E(B-V) = 0.05 and approximate metallicity between solar and half of solar. We obtained h…
The WIYN open cluster study (WOCS) has been working to yield precise magnitudes in the Johnson-Kron-Cousins UBVRI system for all stars in the field of a selection of ``prototypical'' open clusters. Additionally, WOCS is using radial velocities to obtain orbit solutions for all cluster binary stars with periods of less than 1000 days. Recently, WOCS is being expanded to include the near-infrared JHK_s (deep ground-based plus 2MASS) and mid-infrared ([3.6], [4.5], [5.8], [8.0]) photometry from Spitzer/IRAC observations. This multi-wavelength data (0.3--8.0 microns) allows us photometrically to i…
We present a photometric search for UCD candidates in the nearby galaxy group NGC 1023 (d=11 Mpc) -- the poorest environment searched for UCDs yet --, based on wide field imaging with CFHT. After photometric and morphological selection, we obtain a sample of 21 UCD candidates with -12<M_V<-11 mag, if located at NGC 1023's distance. From spectroscopy taken at Calar Alto observatory, we identify the UCD candidate in closest projection to NGC 1023 as an emission line background galaxy. Our photometric data show that in the NGC 1023 group, the mass spectrum of analogs to Fornax/Virgo UCD is restri…
We present the results of a $BVI$ photometric study of the globular cluster NGC 6517 using CCD images obtained at the prime focus of the CFHT. From the resultant color-magnitude diagram, we infer that the cluster is differentially reddened and develop a method for determining the amplitude of this effect, which amounts to \( \sim 0.4 \) mag in \( (V-I) \) across our $\sim 4$ arc-min field. From the corrected $V_0,$ $(V-I)_0$ color-magnitude diagram, we derive the metallicity and distance modulus of the cluster. Our values for the mean foreground reddening ($E(B-V) = 1.10 \pm 0.10$) and metalli…
We present the first CCD photometric observations of the northern open cluster NGC 2126. Data were taken on eight nights in February and December 2002 with a total time span of ~57 hours. Almost 1000 individual V-band frames were examined to find short-period variable stars. We discovered six new variable stars, of which one is a promising candidate for an eclipsing binary with a pulsating component. Two stars were classified as delta Scuti stars and one as Algol-type eclipsing binary. Two stars are slow variables with ambiguous classification. From absolute VRI photometry we have estimated th…
We have previously established, from a carbon star survey, that the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822 is much larger than its central bright core. Four MegaCam fields are acquired to survey a 2$^\circ\times$ 2$^\circ$ area centred on NGC 6822 to fully determine its extent and map its stellar populations. Photometry of over one million stars is obtained in the SDSS g$'$, r$'$, i$'$ to three magnitudes below the TRGB. RGB stars, selected from their magnitudes and colours, are used to map the NGC 6822 stellar distribution up to a distance of 60 arcmin. We map the reddening over the whol…
We have carried out spectrophotometry in the range 3600--9700Å~ of five globular clusters in NGC 5128 for which previous photometric studies suggested a high metal content. We compare the equivalent widths of a set of metallic features of the NGC 5128 clusters with those of well-studied Galactic and M31 globular clusters. This enables us to derive a reliable ranking and estimate of the metallicity for the NGC 5128 clusters. The reddening is obtained from the comparison of the continuum distribution of the observed clusters with those of reference clusters. The present spectroscopic study clari…
Deep B,V time-series photometry obtained with the ESO Very Large Telescope has been used to identify variable stars in the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822. We surveyed a 6.8x6.8 arcmin area of the galaxy and detected a total number of 390 candidate variables with the optimal image subtraction technique (Alard 2000). Light curves on a magnitude scale were obtained for 262 of these variables. Differential flux light curves are available for the remaining sample. In this paper we present the photometric catalogue of calibrated light curves and time-series data, along with coordinates and classifi…
We present extensive optical (UBVRI), near-infrared (JK) light curves and optical spectroscopy of the Type Ia supernova (SN) 2006X in the nearby galaxy NGC 4321 (M100). Our observations suggest that either SN 2006X has an intrinsically peculiar color evolution, or it is highly reddened [E(B - V)_{host} = 1.42+/-0.04 mag] with R_V = 1.48+/-0.06, much lower than the canonical value of 3.1 for the average Galactic dust. SN 2006X also has one of the highest expansion velocities ever published for a SN Ia. Compared with the other SNe Ia we analyzed, SN 2006X has a broader light curve in the U band,…
We present a deep color magnitude diagram for the galactic globular cluster NGC 2808 (C0911-646), reaching 3 magnitudes below the main sequence turnoff. A set of local photometric standards are provided, and the mean cluster reddening and metallicity are constrained using several photometric techniques. The unusual horizontal branch morphology discovered by Sosin et al. (1997, ApJ, 480, L35) is confirmed. No significant radial population gradients are identified to within the limits of the data. We investigate the redwards color spread on the main sequemce found by Ferraro et al. (1997, A&A, 3…
We present the results of a photometric survey for variable stars in the central region of the nearby globular cluster NGC 6397.Time series photometry was obtained for 30 variable objects. The sample includes 12 new objects, of which 6 show periodic lightcurves and 2 are eclipsing binaries of unknown period. Six variables possess certain and three possess likely X-ray counterparts detected with the Chandra observatory. Among them four are cataclysmic variables and one is a foreground eclipsing binary. The cataclysmic variable CV2 exhibited a likely dwarf nova type outburst in May 2003. The cat…
Based on the photometric properties of NGC 6822 we derive a robust star formation history. Adopting this history we compute 15 models of galactic chemical evolution. All of them match present-day photometric properties. The dark halo mass in all models evolves according to the mass assembly history predicted by a $Λ$CDM cosmology. We model the evolution of the baryonic mass aggregation history in this cosmological context assuming that part of the gas available for accretion never falls into the system due to two different physical processes. For seven models we assume that during accretion th…
A photometric, astrometric and spectroscopic investigation of the poorly studied open cluster NGC 6738 has been performed in order to ascertain its real nature. NGC 6738 is definitely not a physical stellar ensemble: photometry does not show a defined mean sequence, proper motions and radial velocities are randomly distributed, spectro-photometric parallaxes range between 10 and 1600 pc, and the apparent luminosity function is identical to that of the surrounding field. NGC 6738 therefore appears to be an apparent concentration of a few bright stars projected on patchy background absorption.
Open clusters are useful tools to investigate the structure and evolution of the Galactic disk. We have started a long-term project to obtain UBVI CCD Photometry of open clusters which were little studied before, using the Doyak 1.8 m telescope of Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory in Korea. The primary goals of this project are (1) to make a catalog of UBVI photometry of open clusters, (2) to make an atlas of open clusters, and (3) to survey and monitor variable stars in open clusters. Here we describe this project and report the first results based on preliminary analysis of the data on…
We present the $UBVRI$ CCD photometry in the region of the open cluster NGC 2421. Radius of the cluster is determined as $\sim$ 3$^\prime$.0 using stellar density profile. Our Study indicates that metallicity of the cluster is $Z \sim$ 0.004. The reddening $E(B-V) = 0.42\pm$0.05 mag is determined using two colour $(U-B)$ versus $(B-V)$ diagram. By combining the 2MASS $JHK$ data with the optical data we determined $E(J-K) = 0.20\pm$0.20 mag and $E(V-K) = 1.15\pm$0.20 mag for this cluster. Colour-excess diagrams show normal interstellar extinction law in the direction of the cluster. We determin…
The type Ia SN 1998bu was discovered in the galaxy M96 on 9 May 1998. It is one of the closest type Ia events of modern times and good temporal coverage has been achieved. Moreover its distance is well-determined. We describe here some of the first-season photometric and spectroscopic observations. While SN 1998bu is unusually highly reddened, we can still deduce that it was a typical type Ia event. Preliminary analysis suggests that for an Ho of about 60 km/(s Mpc), its (de-reddened) peak luminosity, light curve shape and spectroscopic behaviour confirms the relationships found between these …
We present a photometric investigation of the globular cluster population of NGC 1399, the central galaxy in the Fornax cluster, in Washington C and Kron R filters within a field of 36'x36'. This is the largest area around this galaxy ever studied with CCD photometry. The cluster system of NGC 1399 is found to extend further than 100 kpc away from the galaxy. The color distribution exhibits a pronounced bimodality. Within a radial distance of about 55 kpc, the red clusters are more strongly concentrated to the center than the blueclusters. At larger radii, the surface density profiles of the c…
Deep and extensive CCD photometric observations $UBV(RI)_{C}H_α$ were carried out in the area of the open cluster NGC 3293. The new data set allows to see the entire cluster sequence down to $M_{V} \approx +4.5$, revealing that stars with $M_{V} < -2$ are evolving off the main sequence; stars with $-2 < M_{V} < +2$ are located on the main sequence and stars with $M_{V} > +2$ are placed above it. According to our analysis, the cluster distance is $d = 2750 \pm 250 pc$ ($V_{0}-M_{V} = 12.2 \pm 0.2$) and its nuclear age is $8 \pm 1 Myr$. NGC 3293 contains an important fraction of pre--main sequen…
We present the results from a three night, time-series study of the open cluster NGC 6791 using the Megacam wide-field mosaic CCD camera on the 6.5m MMT telescope. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the ability to obtain very high precision photometry for a large number of stars. We achieved better than 1% precision for more than 8000 stars with 14.3 < R < 20.1 and sub-millimagnitude (as low as 0.36 mmag) precision for over 300 stars with 14.6 < R < 16.3 in the field of this cluster. We also discovered 8 new variable stars, including a possible delta-Scuti variable with an amplitude of 2…
The NRAO VLA and VLBA were used from 1988 November to 1998 June to monitor the radio continuum counterpart to the optical broad line region (BLR) in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 5548. Photometric and astrometric observations were obtained at 21 epochs. The radio nucleus appeared resolved, so comparisons were limited to observations spanning 10-60 days and 3-4 yr, and acquired at matched resolutions of 1210 mas = 640 pc (9 VLA observations), 500 mas = 260 pc (9 VLA observations), or 2.3 mas = 1.2 pc (3 VLBA observations). The nucleus is photometrically variable at 8.4 GHz by $33\pm5$% and $52\pm5$% b…
We have obtained mosaic images of NGC 3109 in the V and I bands on 74 nights, spanning approximately one year. From these data, we have conducted an extensive search for Cepheid variables over the entire field of the galaxy, resulting in the discovery of 113 variables with periods ranging from 3.4 to 31.4 days. In this sample, 76 Cepheids, including many long-period variables, were not known before. For the previously known 45 Cepheids in this galaxy, our data proved that reported periods were wrong for 14 objects; for nearly all other previously known Cepheid variables we were able to signifi…
The first CCD photometric investigation of the open cluster NGC 7296 up to now was performed within the narrow band Delta a photometric system, which enables us to detect peculiar objects. A deeper investigation of that cluster followed, using the standard BVR-Bessel filter set. The age and E(B-V) was determined independently to log t= 8.0 and 0.15 respectively by using Delta a and broadband photometry. In total five Be/Ae objects and two metal-weak stars showing significant negative Delta a-values as well as one classical chemically peculiar star could be identified within that intermediate a…
In this paper we present UBVRI CCD photometry in the region of two young open star clusters Basel 4 and NGC 7067 for the first time. Our sample consists of ~ 4000 stars down to V ~ 21 mag. Stellar surface density profile indicates that radius of Basel 4 and NGC 7067 are about 1.8 and 3.0 arcmin respectively. The (U-B) versus (B-V) diagrams indicate that metallicity of NGC 7067 is solar while that of Basel 4 is Z ~ 0.008. We estimate the mean value of E(B-V) = 0.45$\pm$0.05 and 0.75$\pm$0.05 mag for Basel 4 and NGC 7067 respectively. The analysis of 2MASS JHK data in combination with the optical…
We present preliminary photometric results of a monitoring study of the open cluster NGC 2660 as part of the EXPLORE/OC project to find planetary transits in Galactic open clusters. Analyzing a total of 21000 stars (3000 stars with photometry to 1% or better) yielded three light curves with low-amplitude signals like those typically expected for transiting hot Jupiters. Although their eclipses are most likely caused by non-planetary companions, our methods and photometric precision illustrate the potential to detect planetary transits around stars in nearby open clusters.
Archival VLA data has been used to produce arcsecond-resolution 6- and 20-cm images of the region surrounding the nuclear 200-pc (~15") starburst in NGC 253. Twenty-two discrete sources stronger than 0.4 mJy have been detected within ~2 kpc (~3') of the galaxy nucleus; almost all these sources must be associated with the galaxy. None of the radio sources coincides with a detected X-ray binary, so they appear to be due to supernova remnants and H II regions. The region outside the central starburst has a derived radio supernova rate of <~0.1/yr, and may account for at least 20% of the recent st…
We present a study of the mass distributions in the bright E0 galaxy NGC 1407 and its associated group by analyzing the high quality Chandra and ROSAT X-ray spectroscopic data. In order to probe the stellar mass distribution we calculated the B-band mass-to-light ratio profile by comparing the observed line-strength indices and multi-color photometric data with different stellar synthesis model predictions. We find that the gas is single-phase with a temperature of ~0.7 keV within 1Re. Outside 1Re the gas temperature increases quickly outwards to >1 keV, indicating its group origin. We reveal …
We have obtained a mosaic of CCD images of the Coma cluster in the V-band covering a region of approximately 0.4 degrees$^2$ around both central cluster galaxies NGC 4889 and NGC 4874. An additional frame of $\sim$ 90 arcmin$^2$ was taken of the south-west region around NGC 4839. We derived a catalogue of 7023 galaxies and 4096 stars containing positions, central surface brightnesses and isophotal V$_{26.5}$ magnitudes. We estimate that data is complete up to V $_{26.5}\sim$ 22.5 and the surface brightness limiting detection value is $μ$ $\sim$ 24 mag/arcsec$^2$. In this paper we present the c…
We present the first part of the first large and homogeneous CCD color-magnitude diagram (CMD) data base, comprising 52 nearby Galactic globular clusters (GGC) imaged in the V and I bands using only two telescopes (one for each hemisphere). The observed clusters represent 75% of the known Galactic globulars with (m-M)v<=16.15 mag, cover most of the globular cluster metallicity range (-2.2 <= [Fe/H] <= -0.4), and span Galactocentric distances from ~1.2 to ~18.5 kpc. In this paper, the CMDs for the 39 GGCs observed in the southern hemisphere are presented. The remaining 13 northern hemisphere cl…
Images in the J, H and K bands and in the the v=1-0 S(1) line of H2 of the central region of the almost edge-on galaxy NGC 3079 reveal contributions from direct and scattered starlight, emission from hot dust and molecular gas, and extinction gradients. The central 100 pc suffers an extinction of 6 mag. Extremely red near-infrared colours require the presence of hot dust at about 1000 K. Less reddened parts of the bulge require either a 20% J-band contribution from young stars in a stellar bar, or a 20-30% contribution from scattered stellar light. The nucleus is surrounded by a dense molecula…
We present and discuss new photometric data obtained with an IR camera in the J and K pass-bands for the intermediate age open clusters IC 166 (936 stars in total) and NGC 7789 (1030 stars in total). Ic 166 is a poorly studied open cluster for which no IR data was availabele previoulsy, while NGC 7789 is a well studied open cluster. We show that IC 166 is of intermediate age (about 1.0 Gyr), whit a reddening E(V-K) =1.3 (corresponding to E(B-V) = 0.50) and a true distance modulus (m-M)o = 13.25. These values are significantly different from previous determinations. NGC 7789 is found to be a 1.…
Results of a ground-based optical monitoring campaign on NGC5548 in June 1998 are presented. The broad-band fluxes (U,B,V), and the spectrophotometric optical continuum flux F_lambda(5100 A) monotonically decreased in flux while the broad-band R and I fluxes and the integrated emission-line fluxes of Halpha and Hbeta remained constant to within 5%. On June 22, a short continuum flare was detected in the broad band fluxes. It had an amplitude of about ~18% and it lasted only ~90 min. The broad band fluxes and the optical continuum F_lambda(5100 A) appear to vary simultaneously with the EUV vari…
We present a new detection of a Massive Dark Object in the S0 Galaxy NGC 4350, obtained applying a new dynamical model on ground-based photometric and kinematic data already present in literature.
