The interaction of the light with propagating axial torsion fields in the presence of an external magnetic field has been investigated. Axial torsion fields appearing in higher derivative quantum gravity possess two states, with spin one and zero, with different masses. The torsion field with spin-0 state is a ghost that can be removed if its mass is infinite. We investigate the possibility when the light mixes with the torsion fields resulting in the effect of vacuum birefringence and dichroism. The expressions for ellipticity and the rotation of light polarization axis depending on the coupling constant and the external magnetic field have been obtained.
Torsion appears in a natural way in modern formulations of the gravitational theories. In this work we study several aspects of the interplay between the Standard Model and a classical gravitational background with torsion. In particular we consider the problem of the gauge and gravitational anomalies, $B$ and $L$ anomalies, the effective action for the torsion and the propagation of electromagnetic radiation in the presence of torsion.
The effect of torsion in theories of quantum gravity is known to be well described by an axion-like field which couples to matter as well as to gravitation and radiation gauge fields. In this note we consider a particular kind of torsion, arising from the Kalb-Ramond antisymmetric tensor field that appears in the gravitational multiplet of string theory. We investigate the implications for leptogenesis. It is shown that leptogenesis can occur even at tree-level and with only one generation of right-handed Majorana neutrinos, due to CP and CPT violation introduced by the background geometry.
We present the most general quadratic curvature action with torsion including infinite covariant derivatives and study its implications around the Minkowski background via the Palatini approach. Provided the torsion is solely given by the background axial field, the metric and torsion are shown to decouple, and both of them can be made ghost and singularity free for a fermionic source.
We point out that a background torsion field will produce an effective potential to the $K$ and $\bar{K}$ with opposite signs. This allows us to constrain the background torsion field from the $K_L$ and $K_S$ mass difference, CPT violating $K^\circ$ and $\bar{K^\circ}$ mass difference and the CP violating quantities $ε$ and $η_{+-}$. The most stringent bound on the cosmological background torsion $< T^0 > < 10^{-25}$ GeV comes from the direct measurement of the CPT violation.
We consider classical and quantum strings in the conformally invariant background corresponding to the SL(2,R) WZWN model. This background is locally anti-de Sitter spacetime with non-vanishing torsion. Conformal invariance is expressed as the torsion being parallelized. The precise effect of the conformal invariance on the dynamics of both circular and generic classical strings is extracted. In particular, the conformal invariance gives rise to a repulsive interaction of the string with the background which precisely cancels the dominant attractive term arising from gravity. We perform both s…
We show that it is possible to construct a consistent model describing a current-carrying cosmic string endowed with torsion. The torsion contribution to the gravitational force and geodesics of a test-particle moving around the SCCS are analyzed. In particular, we point out two interesting astrophysical phenomena in which the higher magnitude force we derived may play a critical role: the dynamics of compact objects orbiting the torsioned SCCS and accretion of matter onto it. The deficit angle associated to the SCCS can be obtained and compared with data from the Cosmic Background Explorer (C…
In a space-time with torsion, the action for the gravitational field can be extended with a parity-violating piece. We show how to obtain such a piece from geometry itself, by suitably modifying the affine connection so as to include a pseudo-tensorial part. A consistent method is thus suggested for incorporating parity-violation in the Lagrangians of all matter fields with spin in a space-time background with torsion.
The covariantly constant spacetime torsion is one of the fields which may break Lorentz and CPT symmetry. We review the previous works on the dynamical torsion in the framework of effective quantum field theory (QFT). It turns out that the existence of propagating torsion is strongly restricted by the QFT principles. In particular, the torsion mass must be much greater than the masses of all fermionic particles. In this situation, the main chance to observe torsion is due to some symmetry breaking which may, in principle, produce almost constant background torsion field.
The generation of a matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe may be induced by the propagation of fermions in non-trivial, spherically asymmetric (and hence Lorentz violating) gravitational backgrounds. Such backgrounds may characterise the epoch of the early universe. The key point in these models is that the background induces different dispersion relations, hence populations, between fermions and antifermions, and thus CPT Violation (CPTV) appears in thermal equilibrium. Species populations may freeze out leading to leptogenesis and baryogenesis. We consider here a string-inspired scenar…
We discuss here a specific field-theory model, inspired from string theory, in which the generation of a matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Cosmos is due to the propagation of fermions in a non-trivial, spherically asymmetric (and hence Lorentz violating) gravitational background that may characterise the epochs of the early universe. The background induces different dispersion relations, hence populations, between fermions and antifermions, and thus CPT Violation (CPTV) already in thermal equilibrium. Species populations may freeze out leading to leptogenesis and baryogenesis. More specifical…
In this note we provide a simple explanation of the recent finding of anisotropy in electromagnetic (EM) propagation claimed by Nodland and Ralston (astro-ph/9704196). We consider, as a possible origin of such effect, the effective coupling between EM fields and some tiny background torsion field. The coupling is obtained after integrating out charged fermions, it is gauge invariant and does not require the introduction of any new physics.
The electron propagator in a laser background has been shown to be made up of a series of sideband poles. In this paper we study this decomposition by analysing the impact of the residual gauge freedom in the Volkov solution on the sidebands. We show that the gauge transformations do not alter the location of the poles. The identification of the propagator from the two-point function is maintained but we show that the sideband structures mix under residual gauge transformations.
Using the similarity between spacetime torsion and axial gauge couplings, we study torsional contributions to the equilibrium partition function in a stationary background. In the case of a charged fluid minimally coupled to torsion, we spot the existence of linear torsional magnetic and vortical effects, while the axial-vector current and the spin energy potential do not receive corrections in the torsion at linear order. The covariant energy-momentum tensor, on the other hand, does contain terms linear in the torsion tensor. The case of a two-flavor hadronic superfluid is also analyzed, and …
The Kalb-Ramond (KR) antisymmetric tensor field arises naturally in the gravitational multiplet of string theory. Nevertheless, the respective low-energy field theory action, in which, for reasons of gauge invariance, the only dependence on the KR field is through its field strength, constitutes an interesting model \emph{per se}. In this context, the KR field strength also acts as a totally antisymmetric torsion field, while in four space-time dimensions is \emph{dual} to an (KR) axion-like pseudoscalar field. In this context, we review here first the rôle of quantum fluctuations of the KR ax…
We propose the new nondissipative transport effect - the appearance of axial current of thermal quasiparticles in the presence of background gravity with torsion. For the non-interacting model of massless Dirac fermions the response of the axial current to torsion is derived. The chiral vortical effect appears to be the particular case of the chiral torsional effect. The proposed effect may be observed in the condensed matter systems with emergent relativistic invariance (Weyl/Dirac semimetals and the $^3$He-A superfluid).
We develop the effective field theory approach to torsional modified gravities, a formalism that allows for the systematic investigation of the background and perturbation levels separately. Starting from the usual effective field theory approach to curvature-based gravity, we suitably generalize it at the background level by including terms of the contracted torsion tensor, and at the perturbation level by including pure torsion perturbative terms and mixed perturbative terms of torsion and curvature. Having constructed the effective field theory action of general torsional modified gravity, …
Various extensions of the Standard Model predict the existence of hidden photons kinetically mixing with the ordinary photon. This mixing leads to oscillations between photons and hidden photons, analogous to the observed oscillations between different neutrino flavors. In this context, we derive new bounds on the photon-hidden photon mixing parameters using the high precision cosmic microwave background spectral data collected by the Far Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer instrument on board of the Cosmic Background Explorer. Requiring the distortions of the CMB induced by the photon-hidden …
In the vortex background on a sphere, a single 6-dimensional fermion family gives rise to 3 zero-modes in the 4-dimensional point of view, which may explain the replication of families in the Standard Model. Previously, it had been shown that realistic hierarchical mass and mixing patterns can be reproduced for the quarks and the charged leptons. Here, we show that the addition of a single heavy 6-dimensional field that is gauge singlet, unbound to the vortex, and embedded with a bulk Majorana mass enables to generate 4D Majorana masses for the light neutrinos through the see-saw mechanism. Th…
Using the second law of local thermodynamics and the first-order Palatini formalism, we formulate relativistic spin hydrodynamics for quantum field theories with Dirac fermions, such as QED and QCD, in a torsionful curved background. We work in a regime where spin density, which is assumed to relax much slower than other non-hydrodynamic modes, is treated as an independent degree of freedom in an extended hydrodynamic description. Spin hydrodynamics in our approach contains only three non-hydrodynamic modes corresponding to a spin vector, whose relaxation time is controlled by a new transport …
We investigate how precisely the CP nature of the 125 GeV Higgs boson resonance h can be unraveled at the LHC in its decays to tau pairs. We use a method which allows to determine the scalar-pseudoscalar Higgs mixing angle in this decay mode. This mixing angle can be extracted from the distribution of a signed angle, which we analyze for the major charged-prong tau decays. For definiteness, we consider Higgs-boson production by gluon fusion at NLO QCD. We take into account also the irreducible background from Drell-Yan production at NLO QCD. We compute, for the signal and background reactions,…
The pseudoscalar-photon mixing in presence of large scale magnetic field induces polarization in light from distant cosmological sources. We study the effect of these pseudoscalars or axion like particles (ALPs) on Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR) and constrain the product of mixing strength $g_ϕ$ times background magnetic field $B$. The background magnetic field has been assumed to be primordial and we assume large scale correlations with the correlation length of 1Mpc. We use WMAP seven year foreground reduced polarization and temperature data to constrain pseudoscalar-photon mix…
