Using the similarity between spacetime torsion and axial gauge couplings, we study torsional contributions to the equilibrium partition function in a stationary background. In the case of a charged fluid minimally coupled to torsion, we spot the existence of linear torsional magnetic and vortical effects, while the axial-vector current and the spin energy potential do not receive corrections in the torsion at linear order. The covariant energy-momentum tensor, on the other hand, does contain terms linear in the torsion tensor. The case of a two-flavor hadronic superfluid is also analyzed, and the torsional contributions to the constitutive relations computed. Our results show the existence of a torsional electric chiral effect mediated by the charged pions.
We scrutinize the novel chiral transport phenomenon driven by spacetime torsion, namely the chiral torsional effect (CTE). We calculate the torsion-induced chiral currents with finite temperature, density and curvature in the most general torsional gravity theory. The conclusion complements the previous study on the CTE by including curvature and substantiates the relation between the CTE and the Nieh-Yan anomaly. We also analyze the response of chiral torsional current to an external electromagnetic field. The resulting topological current is analogous to that in the axion electrodynamics.
We propose a torsional response raised by lattice dislocation in Weyl semimetals akin to chiral magnetic effect; i.e. a fictitious magnetic field arising from screw or edge dislocation induces charge current. We demonstrate that, in sharp contrast to the usual chiral magnetic effect which vanishes in real solid state materials, the torsional chiral magnetic effect exists even for realistic lattice models, which implies the experimental detection of the effect via SQUID or nonlocal resistivity measurements in Weyl semimetal materials.
We show that Weyl semimetals exhibit a mixed axial-torsional anomaly in the presence of axial torsion, a concept exclusive of these materials with no known natural fundamental interpretation in terms of the geometry of spacetime. This anomaly implies a nonconservation of the axial current---the difference in current of left- and right-handed chiral fermions---when the torsion of the spacetime in which the Weyl fermions move couples with opposite sign to different chiralities. The anomaly is activated by driving transverse sound waves through a Weyl semimetal with a spatially varying tilted dis…
Based on the supersymmetric quantum mechanical approach, we have systematically studied both the $U\left(1\right)$ gauge anomaly and the diffeomorphism anomaly in Weyl systems with torsion, curvature and external electromagnetic fields. These anomalies relate to the chiral current (or current) non-conservation and chiral energy-momentum (or energy-momentum) non-conservation, respectively, which can be applied to the $^{3}\text{He-A}$ phase, the chiral superconductors and the Weyl semimetals with dislocations and disclinations. In sharp difference with other anomalies, there exist torsional ano…
The anomalous currents of two-flavor chiral nuclear matter in the presence of chiral imbalance are computed, using recently developed methods exploiting generalized transgression, which facilitates the evaluation of both the equilibrium partition function and the covariant currents. The constitutive relations for both the broken and unbroken phase of the theory are studied and the out-of-equilibrium nondissipative transport coefficients determined. In the superfluid phase, the vector covariant currents exhibit nondissipative chiral electric, magnetic, and vortical effects, the latter governed …
Inspired by the duality between gravity and defects in crystals, we study lattice field theory with torsion. The torsion is realized by a line defect of a lattice, namely a dislocation. As the first application, we perform the numerical computation for vector and axial currents induced by a screw dislocation. This current generation is called the chiral torsional effect. We also derive the analytical formula for the chiral torsional effect in the continuum limit.
Anomalous transport coefficients are known to be universal in the absence of dynamical gauge fields. We calculate the corrections to these universal values due to dynamical gluon fields at strong coupling, at finite temperature and finite density, using the holographic duality. We show that the consistent chiral magnetic and chiral vortical currents receive no corrections, while we derive a semi-analytic formula for the chiral separation conductivity. We determine these corrections in the large color, large flavor limit, in terms of a series expansion in the anomalous dimension $Δ$ of the axia…
The existence of topological invariants analogous to Chern/Pontryagin classes for a standard $SO(D)$ or $SU(N)$ connection, but constructed out of the torsion tensor, is discussed. These invariants exhibit many of the features of the Chern/Pontryagin invariants: they can be expressed as integrals over the manifold of local densities and take integer values on compact spaces without boundary; their spectrum is determined by the homotopy groups $π_{D-1}(SO(D))$ and $π_{D-1}(SO(D+1))$. These invariants are not solely determined by the connection bundle but depend also on the bundle of local ortho…
Non-chiral operators with positive anomalous dimensions can have interesting applications to supersymmetric model building. Motivated by this, we develop a new method for obtaining the anomalous dimensions of non-chiral double-trace operators in N=1 superconformal field theories (SCFTs) with weakly-coupled AdS duals. Via the Hamiltonian formulation of AdS/CFT, we show how to directly compute the anomalous dimension as a bound state energy in the gravity dual. This simplifies previous approaches based on the four-point function and the OPE. We apply our method to a class of effective AdS5 super…
We discuss both the anomalous Cartan currents and the energy-momentum tensor in a left chiral theory with flavour anomalies as an effective theory for flavored chiral phonons in a chiral superfluid with the gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten term. In the mean-field (leading tadpole) approximation the anomalous Cartan currents and the energy momentum tensor take the form of constitutive currents in the chiral superfluid state. The pertinence of higher order corrections and the Adler-Bardeen theorem is briefly noted.
We calculate the three loop anomalous dimension for a general $N=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory. The result is used to probe the possible existence of renormalisation invariant relationships between the Yukawa and gauge couplings.
The linearized Einstein equation describing graviton propagation through a chiral medium appears to be helicity dependent. We analyze features of the corresponding spectrum in a collision-less regime above a flat background. In the long wave-length limit, circularly polarized metric perturbations travel with a helicity dependent group velocity that can turn negative giving rise to a new type of an anomalous dispersion. We further show that this chiral anomalous dispersion is a general feature of polarized modes propagating through chiral plasmas extending our result to the electromagnetic sect…
Torsional strain in Weyl semimetals excites a unidirectional chiral density wave propagating in the direction of the torsional vector. This gapless excitation, named the chiral sound wave, is generated by a particular realization of the axial anomaly via the triple-axial (AAA) anomalous diagram. We show that the presence of the torsion-generated chiral sound leads to a linear behavior of the specific heat of a Weyl semimetal and to an enhancement of the thermal conductivty at experimentally accessible temperatures. We also demonstrate that such an elastic twist lowers the temperature of the sa…
The topological structure of the Nieh-Yan form in 4-dimensional manifold is given by making use of the decomposition of spin connection. The case of the generalized Nieh-Yan form on $2^d$-dimensional manifold is discussed with an example of 8-dimensional case studied in detail. The chiral anomaly with nonvanishing torsion is studied also. The further contributions from torsional part to chiral anomaly are found coming from the zeroes of some fields under pure gauge condition.
We provide a geometrical argument for the emergence of a Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) term for a Fermi surface threaded by a Berry curvature. In the presence of external fields, the gauged WZW term yields a chiral (triangle) anomaly for the fermionic current at the edge of the Fermi surface. Fermion number is conserved though since the Berry curvatures occur always in pairs with opposite (monopole) charge. The anomalous vector and axial currents for a a fermionic fluid at low temperature threaded by pairs of Berry curvatures are discussed. The leading temperature correction to the chiral vortical …
We study the charmonium dissociation in a strongly coupled chiral plasma in the presence of magnetic field and axial charge imbalance. This type of plasma carries "anomalous flow" induced by the chiral anomaly and exhibits novel transport phenomena such as chiral magnetic effect. We found that the "anomalous flow" would modify the charmonium color screening length by using the gauge/gravity correspondence. We derive an analytical expression quantifying the "anomalous flow" experienced by a charmonium for a large class of chiral plasma with a gravity dual. We elaborate on the similarity and {\i…
We study the hydrodynamic regime of chiral plasmas at high temperature. We find a new type of gapless collective excitation induced by chiral effects in an external magnetic field. This is a transverse wave, and it is present even in incompressible fluids, unlike the chiral magnetic and chiral vortical waves. The velocity is proportional to the coefficient of the gravitational anomaly. We briefly discuss the possible relevance of this "chiral Alfvén wave" in physical systems.
Starting from low energy effective chiral Lagrangian with gauged Wess-Zumino Witten term, we have derived a hydrodynamic theory for chiral superfluid. It is a non-abelian hydrodynamics at zero temperature with only superfluid components. With an external electromagnetic field and baryonic and axial baryonic chemical potentials turned on, we are able to identify analogs of various anomaly induced term in normal hydrodynamics, including chiral vortical effect, chiral magnetic effect and chiral electric effect. As an example, we solved the hydrodynamic equations for the ground state and observed …
It is argued on general ground and demonstrated in the particular example of the Chiral Schwinger Model that there is nothing wrong with apparently anomalous chiral gauge theory. If quantised correctly, there should be no gauge anomaly and chiral gauge theory should be renormalisable and unitary, even in higher dimensions and with non-abelian gauge groups. Furthermore, mass terms for gauge bosons and chiral fermions can be generated without spoiling the gauge invariance.
Semiclassical chiral fermions manifest the anomalous spin-Hall effect: when put into a pure electric field they suffer a side jump, analogous to what happens to their massive counterparts in non-commutative mechanics. The transverse shift is consistent with the conservation of the angular momentum. In a pure magnetic field instead, spiraling motion is found. Motion in Hall-type perpendicular electric and magnetic fields is also studied.
The spin-extended semiclassical chiral fermion (we call the S-model), which had been used to derive the twisted Lorentz symmetry of the "spin-enslaved" chiral fermion (we call the c-model) is equivalent to the latter in the free case, however coupling to an external electromagnetic field yields nonequivalent systems. The difference is highlighted by the inconsistency of spin enslavement within the spin-extended framework. The S-model exhibits nevertheless similar though slightly different anomalous properties as the usual c-model does. The natural Poincaré symmetry of the free model remains un…
We calculate anomaly induced conductivities from a holographic gauge theory model using Kubo formulas, making a clear conceptual distinction between thermodynamic state variables such as chemical potentials and external background fields. This allows us to pinpoint ambiguities in previous holographic calculations of the chiral magnetic conductivity. We also calculate the corresponding anomalous current three-point functions in special kinematic regimes. We compare the holographic results to weak coupling calculations using both dimensional regularization and cutoff regularization. In order to …
Canonical quantization of anomalous SU(N) Yang-Mills models is considered. It is shown that the gauge invariance of the quantum theory can be saved in spite of degeneracy of the Wess-Zumino action.
The chiral plasmon modes of relativistic matter in background magnetic and strain-induced pseudomagnetic fields are studied in detail using the consistent chiral kinetic theory. The results reveal a number of anomalous features of these chiral magnetic and pseudomagnetic plasmons that could be used to identify them in experiment. In a system with nonzero electric (chiral) chemical potential, the background magnetic (pseudomagnetic) fields not only modify the values of the plasmon frequencies in the long-wavelength limit, but also affect the qualitative dependence on the wave vector. Similar mo…
Using the chiral kinetic theory we derive the electric and chiral current densities in inhomogeneous relativistic plasma. We also derive equations for the electric and chiral charge chemical potentials that close the Maxwell equations in such a plasma. The analysis is done in the regimes with and without a drift of the plasma as a whole. In addition to the currents present in the homogeneous plasma (Hall current, chiral magnetic, chiral separation, and chiral electric separation effects, as well as Ohm's current) we derive several new terms associated with inhomogeneities of the plasma. Apart …
We study anomalous conductivities in Chiral Superfluids in the framework of two different holographic models, by means of Kubo formulae. In addition, we point out the existence of an anomalous transport phenomenon that consists in the presence of a charge density when the superfluid velocity is aligned with a magnetic field. It has been pointed out recently that certain chiral conductivities in holographic superfluids exhibit universal behavior at zero temperature. We show that anomalous conductivities always stabilize at low temperatures in our setup. Even though the particular value they acq…
Due to the Weyl anomaly, an axial vector field produces novel anomalous chiral currents in spacetime with boundaries. Remarkably, the chiral current is not invariant under the gauge transformation of axial vector fields. As a result, more potential terms appear, and the chiral current becomes larger than the electric current near the boundary. This paper investigates the anomalous chiral current in AdS/BCFT. We find that the minimal holographic model of the axial vector field cannot produce the expected chiral current. To resolve this problem, we propose adding a suitable boundary action. Furt…
We discuss kinetic equations involving the anomalous terms responsible for the chiral anomaly. The general chiral heat wave in cold Fermi liquid is described and the modification of the anomalous zero sound at small temperature and vorticity is found.
We show that, the lattice regularization of chiral gauge theories proposed by Kaplan, when applied to a (2+1)-dimensional domain wall, produces a (1+1)-dimensional theory at low energy even if gauge anomaly produced by chiral fermions does not cancel. But the corresponding statement is not true in higher dimensions.
We respond to the comment by Kreimer et. al. about the torsional contribution to the chiral anomaly in curved spacetimes. We discuss their claims and refute its main conclusion.
We present a new way of deriving effective theories of dynamical electromagnetic fields in general media. It can be used to give a systematic formulation of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) with strong magnetic fields, including systems with chiral matter and Adler-Bell-Jackiw (ABJ) anomaly. We work in the regime in which velocity and temperature fluctuations can be neglected. The resulting chiral anomalous MHD incorporates and generalizes the chiral magnetic effect, the chiral separation effect, the chiral electric separation effect, as well as recently derived strong-field MHD, all in a single coh…
The effects of finite magnetization and electric polarization on dissipative and non-dissipative (anomalous) transport coefficients of a chiral fluid are studied. First, using the second law of thermodynamics as well as Onsager's time reversal symmetry principle, the complete set of dissipative transport coefficients of this medium is derived. It is shown that the properties of the resulting shear and bulk viscosities are mainly affected by the anisotropy induced by external electric and magnetic fields. Then, using the fact that the anomaly induced currents do not contribute to entropy produc…
Anomalous correlators of vector and axial currents which enter the Kubo formulae for the chiral magnetic and the chiral separation conductivities are explicitly calculated for free overlap fermions on the lattice. The results are confronted with continuum calculations in the finite-temperature regularization, and a subtle point of such regularization for chiral magnetic conductivity related to the correct counting of the chiral states is highlighted. In agreement with some previous claims in the literature, we find that in a lattice regularization which respects gauge invariance, the chiral ma…
By generalizing the Fujikawa approach, we show in the path-integral formalism: (1) how the infinitesimal variation of the fermion measure can be integrated to obtain the full anomalous chiral action; (2) how the action derived in this way can be identified as the Chern-Simons term in five dimensions, if the anomaly is consistent; (3) how the regularization can be carried out, so as to lead to the consistent anomaly and not to the covariant anomaly. Our method uses Schwinger's ``proper-time'' representation of the Green's function and the gauge invariant point-splitting technique. We find that …
We show that for an anomalous fluid carrying dissipationless chiral magnetic and/or vortical currents there is a frame in which a stationary obstacle experiences no drag, but energy and charge currents do not vanish, resembling superfluidity. However, unlike ordinary superfluid flow, the anomalous chiral currents do transport entropy in this frame. We show that the second law of thermodynamics completely determines the amounts of these anomalous non-dissipative currents in the "no-drag frame" as polynomials in temperature and chemical potential with known anomaly coefficients. These general re…
We study a heavy impurity moving longitudinal with the direction of an external magnetic field in an anomalous chiral medium. Such system would carry a non-dissipative current of chiral magnetic effect associated with the anomaly. We show, by generalizing Landau's criterion for superfluidity, that the "anomalous component" which gives rise to the anomalous transport will {\it not} contribute to the drag experienced by an impurity. We argue on a very general basis that those systems with a strong magnetic field would exhibit an interesting transport phenomenon -- the motion of the heavy impurit…
We study the hydrodynamics of a gas of noninteracting Weyl fermions coupled to the electromagnetic field in $(2N + 1) + 1$ spacetime dimensions using the chiral kinetic theory, which encodes the gauge anomaly in the Chern character of the nonabelian Berry connection over the Fermi surface. We derive the anomalous contributions to the relativistic hydrodynamic currents in equilibrium and at a finite temperature, which agree with and provides an approach complementary to the results derived previously using thermodynamic constraints.
The anomaly implies an obstruction to a fully chiral covariant calculation of the effective action in the abnormal parity sector of chiral theories. The standard approach then is to reconstruct the anomalous effective action from its covariant current. In this work we use a recently introduced formulation which allows to directly construct the non trivial chiral invariant part of the effective action within a fully covariant formalism. To this end we develop an appropriate version of Chan's approach to carry out the calculation within the derivative expansion. The result to four derivatives, i…
Relativistic gravitational anomalies lead to anomalous transport coefficients that can be activated at finite temperature in condensed matter systems with gapless fermions. The chiral vortical effect (CVE) is an anomalous chiral current along a rotation axis, expressed in terms of a gravimagnetic field and a gravitational anomaly. Another one, the chiral torsional effect (CTE), arises from hydrodynamically independent frame fields and connection. We discuss the relation of CVE, CTE and gravitational anomalies for relativistic fermions from the perspective of torsion and the Nieh-Yan anomaly. T…
Chiral anomaly is a very fundamental aspect of quantum theories with chiral fermion, from the Standard Model to supersymmetric field theories or even string theories. How such microscopic anomaly manifests itself in a macroscopic many-body system with chiral fermions, is a highly nontrivial question that has recently attracted significant interest. As it turns out, unusual transport currents can be induced by chiral anomaly under suitable conditions in such systems, with the notable example of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) where a vector current (e.g. electric current) is generated along an…
A generalized chiral Schwinger model is studied by means of perturbative techniques. Explicit expressions are obtained, both for bosonic and fermionic propagators, and compared to the ones derived by means of functional techniques. In particular a consistent recipe is proposed to describe the ambiguity occurring in the regularization of the fermionic determinant. The role of the gauge fixing term, which is needed to develop perturbation theory and the behaviour of the spectrum as a function of the parameters are clarified together with ultraviolet and infrared properties of the model.
The dispersionless longitudinal photon in Maxwell theory is thought of as a redundant degree of freedom due to the gauge symmetry. We find that when there exist exactly flat bands with zero energy in a condensed matter system, the fermion field may locally transform as a gauge field and the system possesses a gauge symmetry. As the longitudinal photon, the redundant degrees of freedom from the flat bands must be gauged away from the physical states. As an example, we study spinless fermions on a generalized Lieb lattice in three dimensions. The flat band of the longitudinal fermion induces a g…
We investigate the discrete chiral transformation of a Majorana fermion on a torus. Depending on the boundary conditions the integration measure can change sign. Taking this anomalous behavior into account we define a chiral order parameter as a ratio of partition functions with differing boundary conditions. Then the lattice realization of the Gross-Neveu model with Wilson fermions is simulated using the recent `worm' technique on the loop gas or all-order hopping representation of the fermions. An algorithm is formulated that includes the Gross-Neveu interaction for N fermion species. The cr…
In continuum field theory, it has been discussed that chiral gauge theories with Weyl fermions in anomalous gauge representations (anomalous gauge theories) can consistently be quantized, provided that some of gauge bosons are permitted to acquire mass. Such theories in four dimensions are inevitablly non-renormalizable and must be regarded as a low-energy effective theory with a finite ultraviolet (UV) cutoff. In this paper, we present a lattice framework which enables one to study such theories in a non-perturbative level. By introducing bare mass terms of gauge bosons that impose ``smoothne…
