It is well known that solutions of general relativity which allow for traversable wormholes require the existence of exotic matter (matter that violates weak or null energy conditions [WEC or NEC]). In this article, we provide a class of exact solution for Einstein-Maxwell field equations describing wormholes assuming the erstwhile cosmological term $Λ$ to be space variable, viz., $Λ= Λ(r)$.
The source considered here not only a matter entirely but a sum of matters i.e. anisotropic matter distribution, electromagnetic field and cosmological constant whose effective parts obey all energy conditions out side the wormhole throat. Here violation of energy conditions can be compensated by varying cosmological constant. The important feature of this article is that one can get wormhole structure, at least theoretically, comprising with physically acceptable matters.
The present work is an attempt to find possible traversable wormhole solutions in static spherically symmetric space-time supported by anisotropic matter field. Part of the work could be considered as a generalization of the work in Phys. Lett. B 757 (2016), 130 in the sense that it extends the work done therein. The paper provides several examples of wormholes in anisotropic pressure and provides general mechanisms for finding them. Finally the work examines the energy conditions corresponding to suggested wormhole solutions.
We study the geometry of a wormhole spacetime filled with anisotropic matter in the context of general relativity. In the course of the study, new static and spherically symmetric solutions, analytic and numerical ones, are found. We specify the existence condition for a wormhole throat. We analyze properties of the solutions after categorizing them based on the spacetime regularity and the signature of energy density. The necessary conditions which allow a wormhole spacetime to be nonsingular are described.
We discuss the structure of a gravitational euclidean instanton obtained through coupling of gravity to electromagnetism. Its topology at fixed $t$ is $S^1\times S^2$. This euclidean solution can be interpreted as a tunnelling to a hyperbolic space (baby universe) at $t=0$ or alternatively as a static wormhole that joins the two asymptotically flat spaces of a Reissner--Nordström type solution with $M=0$.
This paper studies generalized Ellis-Bronikov (E-B) traversable wormholes in $f(R)$ extended gravity. We assume that these wormholes are supported by anisotropic dark matter (DM) according to the most often used phenomenological models, namely those of Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW), Thomas-Fermi (T-F), and Pseudo-isothermal (PI). Initially, we obtain the field equations in a general scenario of $f(R)$ theories in the metric formalism for the static and spherically symmetric Morris-Thorne spacetime. Then we particularize to a $f(R)$ model with power-law, including the Starobinky modified gravity. F…
In the homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Robertson-Walker minisuperspace model, it is known that there are no Euclidean wormhole solutions in the pure gravity system. Here it is demonstrated explicitly that in Taub cosmology, which is one of the simplest anisotropic cosmology models, wormhole solutions do exist in pure general relativity in both classical and quantum contexts.
In this work, we explore wormhole solutions in $f(R,T)$ theory of gravity, where $R$ is the scalar curvature and $T$ is the trace of stress-energy tensor of matter. To investigate this, we consider static spherically symmetric geometry with matter contents as anisotropic, isotropic and barotropic fluids in three separate cases. By taking into account Starobinsky $f(R)$ model , we analyze the behavior of energy conditions for these different kind of fluids. It is shown that the wormhole solutions can be constructed without exotic matter in few regions of spacetime. We also give the graphical il…
In this paper, we derive some new exact solutions of static wormholes in f(T) gravity. We discuss independent cases of the pressure components including isotropic and anisotropic pressure. Lastly we consider radial pressure satisfying a barotropic equation of state. We also check the behavior of null energy condition (NEC) for each case and observe that it is violated for the anisotropic case, while it is satisfied for isotropic and barotropic cases.
Anisotropic spherically symmetric systems are studied in the connection and densitized triad variables used in loop quantum gravity. The material source is an anisotropic fluid, which is arguably the most commonly used source term in anisotropic studies within general relativity. The gravitational+anisotropic fluid constraints are derived and analyzed and then quantum gravity inspired holonomy replacements are performed. The quantum properties of the fluid are dictated by the modified constraint equations. Particular attention is paid to wormhole throats, as they provide a simplistic model of …
In the present work we investigate wormhole structures and the energy conditions supporting them, in Einstein-Cartan theory ({\sf ECT}). The matter content consists of a Weyssenhoff fluid along with an anisotropic matter which together generalize the anisotropic energy momentum tensor in general relativity ({\sf GR}) to include spin effects. Assuming that the radial pressure and energy density obey a linear equation of state, we introduce exact asymptotically flat and anti-de-Sitter spacetimes that admit traversable wormholes and respect energy conditions. Such wormhole solutions are studied i…
Given an anisotropic fluid source, we determine in closed forms, upon solving the field equations of general relativity (GR) and teleparallel gravity (TEGR) coupled to a cosmological constant, cylindrically symmetric four-dimensional cosmological rotating wormholes, satisfying all local energy conditions, and cosmological rotating solutions with two axes of symmetry at finite proper distance. These solutions have the property that their angular velocity is proportional to the cosmological constant.
In this paper, we examine static spherically symmetric wormhole solutions in generalized $f(R,ϕ)$ gravity. To do this, we consider three different kinds of fluids: anisotropic, barotropic and isotropic. We explore different $f(R,ϕ)$ models and inspect the energy conditions for all of those three fluids. It is found that under some models in this theory, it is possible to obtain wormhole solutions without requiring exotic matter. The discussion about the conditions where the standard energy conditions (WEC and NEC) are valid for the fluids is discussed in details. From our results and for our c…
In the present work we investigate evolving wormhole configurations described by a constant redshift function in Einstein-Cartan theory ({\sf ECT}). The matter content consists of a Weyssenhoff fluid along with an anisotropic matter which together generalize the anisotropic energy momentum tensor in general relativity ({\sf GR}) in order to include the effects of intrinsic angular momentum (spin) of particles. Using a generalized Friedmann-Robertson-Walker ({\sf FRW}) spacetime, we derive analytical evolving wormhole geometries by assuming a particular equation of state ({\sf EoS}) for energy …
In the present paper, we investigate wormholes in 4D-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity without the requirement of exotic matters. We have taken the radial dependent red-shift function $ϕ=\ln \left( {\frac {r_{0}}{r}}+1 \right)$ and shape function $b(r)={\frac{r_{0}\ln(r+1)}{\ln({r_0}+1)}}$ as well as anisotropic matter sources through equation of state (EoS) $p_r(r) = ωρ(r)$. We examine the energy conditions, flaring out condition, throat condition and anisotropic parameter. The volume integral quantifier is also analyzed to validate the existence and stability of the WH solution. We find, for -ve…
We provide a prescription of real feasible sources that supply fuel to construct a traversable wormhole. A class of exact solutions for Einstein-Maxwell field equations describing wormhole with an anisotropic matter distribution has been presented. The anisotropy plays a crucial role for the existence of the spacetime comprising wormhole geometry.
The combination of quintessence and phantom energy in a joint model is referred to as quintom dark energy. This paper discusses traversable wormholes supported by such quintom matter. Two particular solutions are explored, a constant redshift function and a specific shape function. Both isotropic and anisotropic pressures are considered.
Chaplygin anisotropic matter governing the cosmological evolution in two identical universes with an intermediate static spherically symmetric region is considered. The static region contains a wormhole allowing one to pass etween two horizons. The metric in the non-static region represents a kind of an anisotropic Kantowski-Sachs cosmological model starting from a horizon instead the initial singularity. A classification of the cosmologies with a monotonic late stage is presented. It is shown that only one scenario can involve a de Sitter regime. The scales in the de Sitter phase allows one t…

In this paper, we have constructed a (2+1)-dimensional wormhole using inhomogeneous and anisotropic distribution of phantom energy. We have determined the exact form of the equation of state of phantom energy that supports the wormhole structure. Interestingly, this equation of state is linear but variable one and is dependent only on the radial parameter of the model.
In this paper we have established an asymptotically conical Morris-Thorne wormhole solution supported by anisotropic matter fluid and a global monopole charge in the framework of a $1+3$ dimensional gravity minimally coupled to a triplet of scalar fields $ϕ^a$, resulting from the breaking of a global $O(3)$ symmetry. For the anisotropic matter fluid we have considered the equation of state (EoS) given by $\mathcal{P}_r=ωρ$, with a consequence $ω<-1$, implying a so-called phantom energy at the throat of the wormhole which violates the energy conditions. In addition, we study the weak gravitatio…
In this study, we reach the equations of motion of Morris-Thorne wormhole geometry by means of the Einstein Field Equations and Klein-Gordon Equation of Scalar-Tensor theory by direct calculation. We discuss the anisotropic matter energy distribution. We determine a relation between the radial and the transverse pressures. Hence, we express the anisotropic energy momentum tensor in terms of one pressure class, by means of that relation. Besides that, we check the isotropic case and show that there is no traversable wormhole, in the zero redshift function situation, if the space is fulfilled wi…
Static solutions representing wormhole configurations in Einstein-Cartan theory ({\sf ECT}) in the presence of electric charge are obtained. The solutions are described by a constant redshift function with matter content consisting of a Weyssenhoff fluid along with an anisotropic matter and energy momentum tensor ({\sf EMT}) of the electric field which together generalize the anisotropic energy momentum tensor in Einstein-Maxwell theory in order to include the effects of the intrinsic angular momentum (spin) of the particles. Assuming the equation of state ({\sf EoS}) $p_r={\sf w}_1ρ$ and $p_t…
We study Born-Infeld gravity coupled to an anisotropic fluid in a static, spherically symmetric background. The free function characterizing the fluid is selected on the following grounds: i) recovery of the Reissner-Nordström solution of GR at large distances, ii) fulfillment of classical energy conditions and iii) inclusion of models of nonlinear electrodynamics as particular examples. Four branches of solutions are obtained, depending on the signs of two parameters on the gravity and matter sectors. On each branch, we discuss in detail the modifications on the innermost region of the corres…
The model of a spiral galaxy with radially directed flows of dark matter is extended by exotic matter, in a form of a perfect fluid with a linear anisotropic equation of state. The exotic matter is collected in the minimum of gravitational potential and opens a wormhole in the center of the galaxy. The flows of dark matter pass through the wormhole and form a mirror galaxy on the other side. The influence of model parameters to the shape of solution is studied, a solution matching parameters of Milky Way galaxy is computed.
In this article we examine a class of wormhole and flux tube like solutions to 5D vacuum Einstein equations. These solutions possess generic local anisotropy, and their local isotropic limit is shown to be conformally equivalent to the spherically symmetric 5D solutions of gr-qc/9807086. The anisotropic solutions investigated here have two physically distinct signatures: First, they can give rise to angular-dependent, anisotropic ``electromagnetic'' interactions. Second, they can result in a gravitational running of the ``electric'' and ``magnetic'' charges of the solutions. This gravitational…
We construct a model of a rotating wormhole made by cutting and pasting two Kerr spacetimes. As a result, we obtain a rotating thin-shell wormhole with exotic matter at the throat. Two candidates for the exotic matter are considered: (i) a perfect fluid; (ii) an anisotropic fluid. We show that a perfect fluid is unable to support a rotating thin-shall wormhole. On the contrary, the anisotropic fluid with the negative energy density can be a source for such a geometry.
The present paper deals with some wormhole solutions which are obtained by taking two different shape functions along with zero tidal force. For obtaining wormhole solutions, anisotropic fluid and a equation of state $p_t=-\frac{a}ρ$ related by Chaplygin gas are considered where $ρ$ is the energy density, $p_t$ is tangential pressure and $a$ is positive constant. Energy conditions are examined for two different models, and it is found that a major energy conditions are satisfied in a region.
In this paper we derive new static phantom traversable wormholes by assuming a shape function with a quadratic dependence on the radial coordinate r. We mainly focus our study on wormholes sustained by exotic matter with positive energy density (as seen by any static observer) and a variable equation of state $p_r/ρ<-1$, dubbed phantom matter. Among phantom wormhole spacetimes extending to infinity, we show that a quadratic shape function allows us to construct static spacetimes of finite size, composed by a phantom wormhole connected to an anisotropic spherically symmetric distribution of dar…
We analyze the stress-energy tensor necessary to generate a general stationary and axisymmetric spacetime. The constraints on the geometry arising from considering a perfect fluid as a source are derived. For a fluid with a nonzero stress tensor, we obtain two necessary conditions on the metric. As an example, we show that the rotating wormhole presented in the literature can not be described by either a perfect fluid or by a fluid with anisotropic stresses.
We present some exact solutions of the Einstein equations with an anisotropic fluid exploiting the Chaplygin equation of state. The solutions describe spacetimes with two identical T regions and an intermediate static spherically symmetric R region containing a wormhole. The metric in the T region represents an anisotropic Kantowski-Sachs cosmological model. Its evolution starts from an event horizon and develops according to different scenarios including eternal expansion, contraction and also a finite universe lifetime.
The paper deals with the static spherically symmetric wormhole solutions in $f(R)$-modified gravity theory with anisotropic matter field and for some particular choices for the shape functions. The present work may be considered as an extension of the general formalism in \cite{r15} for finding wormhole solutions. For isotropic matter distribution it has been shown that wormhole solutions are possible for zero tidal force and it modifies the claim in \cite{r17}. Finally energy conditions are examined and it is found that all energy conditions are satisfied in a particular domain with a particu…
In this paper, we evaluate traversable wormhole solutions through Karmarkar condition in $f(R,T)$ theory, where $T$ is the trace of the energy-momentum tensor and $R$ represents the Ricci scalar. We develop a wormhole shape function for the static traversable wormhole geometry by using the embedding class-I technique. The resulting shape function is used to construct wormhole geometry that fulfills all the necessary conditions and joins the two asymptotically flat regions of the spacetime. We investigate the existence of viable traversable wormhole solutions for anisotropic matter configuratio…
In this paper, we investigate static spherically symmetric wormhole solutions in the background of $F(T,T_\mathcal{G})$ gravity ($T$ is the torsion scalar and $T_{\mathcal{G}}$ represents teleparallel equivalent of the Gauss-Bonnet term). We study the wormhole solutions by assuming four different matter contents, a specific redshift function and a particular $F(T,T_\mathcal{G})$ model. The behavior of null/weak energy conditions for these fluids is analyzed graphically. It turns out that wormhole solutions can be obtained in the absence of exotic matter for some particular regions of spacetime…
The well-known problem of wormholes in general relativity (GR) is the necessity of exotic matter, violating the Weak Energy Condition (WEC), for their support. This problem looks easier if, instead of island-like configurations, one considers string-like ones, among them, cylindrically symmetric space-times with rotation. However, for cylindrical wormhole solutions a problem is the lacking asymptotic flatness, making it impossible to observe their entrances as local objects in our Universe. It was suggested to solve this problem by joining a wormhole solution to flat asymptotic regions at some…
In this paper we study the possibility of sustaining an evolving wormhole via exotic matter made of phantom energy in the presence of a cosmological constant. We derive analytical evolving wormhole geometries by supposing that the radial tension of the phantom matter, which is negative to the radial pressure, and the pressure measured in the tangential directions have barotropic equations of state with constant state parameters. In this case the presence of a cosmological constant ensures accelerated expansion of the wormhole configurations. More specifically, for positive cosmological constan…
In the present article we propose a new hybrid shape function for wormhole (WH)s in the modified $f(R,T)$ gravity. The proposed shape function satisfied the conditions of WH geometry. Geometrical behavior of WH solutions are discussed in both anisotropic and isotropic cases respectively. Also, the stability of this model is obtained by determining the equilibrium condition. The radial null energy condition and weak energy condition are validated in the proposed shape function indicating the absence of exotic matter in modified $f(R,T)$ gravity.
An exact solution of the Einstein field equations given the barotropic equation of state $p=ωρ$ yields two possible models: (1) if $ω<-1$, we obtain the most general possible anisotropic model for wormholes supported by phantom energy and (2) if $ω>0$, we obtain a model for galactic rotation curves. Here the equation of state represents a perfect fluid which may include dark matter. These results illustrate the power and usefulness of exact solutions.
This paper presents a new wormhole solution by assuming that a homogeneously distributed fluid with equation of state $p=ωρ$ can be adapted to an anisotropic spacetime such as a wormhole and that this spacetime admits a one-parameter group of conformal motions. The pressure $p$ in the equation of state becomes the lateral pressure $p_t$ instead of the radial pressure $p_r$, as assumed in previous studies. Given that $p_t=ωρ$, $p_r$ is then determined from the Einstein field equations. A wormhole solution can be obtained only if $ω<-1$ or $0<ω<1$. Since the former case corresponds to phantom da…
Morris \& Thorne \cite{morris1} proposed geometrical objects called traversable wormholes that act as bridges in connecting two spacetimes or two different points of the same spacetime. The geometrical properties of these wormholes depend upon the choice of the shape function. In literature, these are studied in modified gravities for different types of shape functions. In this paper, the traversable wormholes having shape function $b(r)=\frac{r_0\tanh(r)}{\tanh(r_0)}$ are explored in $f(R)$ gravity with $f(R)=R+αR^m-βR^{-n}$, where $α$, $β$, $m$ and $n$ are real constants. For different value…
We consider neutron-star-plus-wormhole configurations supported by a massless ghost scalar field. The neutron fluid is modeled by an anisotropic equation of state. When the central energy density of the fluid is of comparable magnitude to the one of the scalar field, configurations with an equator at the center and a double throat arise. These double-throat wormholes can be either partially or completely filled by the neutron fluid. In the latter case, the passage of light - radiated by the neutron matter - through these wormholes is studied. A stability analysis indicates that all considered …
This paper investigates static spherically symmetric traversable wormhole solutions in $f(\mathcal{G},T)$ gravity ($\mathcal{G}$ and $T$ represent the Gauss-Bonnet invariant and trace of the energy-momentum tensor, respectively). We construct explicit expressions for ordinary matter by taking specific form of red-shift function and $f(\mathcal{G},T)$ model. To analyze possible existence of wormholes, we consider anisotropic, isotropic as well as barotropic matter distributions. The graphical analysis shows the violation of null energy condition for the effective energy-momentum tensor througho…
We show that, in contrast to general relativity, in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity (EiBI), a violation of the null convergence condition does not necessarily lead to a violation of the null energy condition, by establishing a relationship between them. This serves as a motivation for finding wormhole solutions which can be supported by nonexotic matter in this gravity theory. We then obtain exact solutions of the field equations in EiBI gravity coupled to arbitrary nonlinear electrodynamics and anisotropic fluids. Depending on the signs and values of different parameters, the general s…
We consider mixed configurations consisting of a wormhole filled by a strongly magnetized isotropic or anisotropic neutron fluid. The nontrivial topology of the spacetime is allowed by the presence of exotic matter. By comparing these configurations with ordinary magnetized neutron stars, we clarify the question of how the presence of the nontrivial topology influences the magnetic field distribution inside the fluid. In the case of an anisotropic fluid, we find new solutions describing configurations, where the maximum of the fluid density is shifted from the center. A linear stability analys…
In this paper we study the possibility of sustaining an evolving wormhole via exotic matter made out of phantom energy. We show that this exotic source can support the existence of evolving wormhole spacetimes. Explicitly, a family of evolving Lorentzian wormholes conformally related to another family of zero-tidal force static wormhole geometries is found in Einstein gravity. Contrary to the standard wormhole approach, where first a convenient geometry is fixed and then the matter distribution is derived, we follow the conventional approach for finding solutions in theoretical cosmology. We d…
Considering a energy density of the form $ρ=q\left({\frac{r}{r_0}}\right)^{-n}$( where $q$ is an arbitrary positive constant with dimension of energy density and $n>0$), a shape function is obtained by using field equations of braneworld gravity theory in this paper. Under isotropic scenario wormhole solutions are obtained considering six different redshift functions along with the obtained new shape function. For anisotropic case wormhole solutions are obtained under the consideration of five different shape functions along with the redshift function $ϕ=βln(\frac{r}{r_0})$, where $β$ is an ar…
Wormholes are tunnels connecting different regions in space-time. They were obtained originally as a solution for Einstein's General Relativity theory and according to this theory they need to be filled by an exotic kind of anisotropic matter. In the present sense, by "exotic matter" we mean matter that does not satisfy the energy conditions. In this article we propose the modelling of wormholes within an alternative gravity theory that proposes an extra material (rather than geometrical) term in its gravitational action. Our solutions are obtained from well-known particular cases of the wormh…
We explore the possibility of dynamic wormhole geometries, within the context of nonlinear electrodynamics. The Einstein field equation imposes a contracting wormhole solution and the obedience of the weak energy condition. Furthermore, in the presence of an electric field, the latter presents a singularity at the throat, however, for a pure magnetic field the solution is regular. Thus, taking into account the principle of finiteness, that a satisfactory theory should avoid physical quantities becoming infinite, one may rule out evolving wormhole solutions, in the presence of an electric field…
In this work, we study a traversable wormhole sourced by an ideal matter fluid with an antisymmetric 2-tensor background field coupled to gravity in a scenario of spontaneously broken Lorentz symmetry. Contrary to employed in the literature, we use a nonminimal curvature-coupling term $B^{μν}B^{κλ}R_{μνκλ}$ which incorporates all three kinds of Lorentz-violating coefficient for the pure-gravity sector of the minimal standard-model extension. We find that the wormhole is non-asymptotically globally flat and determine the allowed parameters of the theory, showing that the matter fluid must be ne…
We study static traversable wormholes obtained by Morris and Thorne in general relativity (GR) in the framework of a modified theory of gravity. The modified gravitational action $f(R,T)$ is a function of the Ricci scalar ($R$) and of the trace of the energy momentum tensor ($T$). For a modified gravity $f(R,T)=R+αR^{2}+λT$, where $α$ and $λ$ are constants, we obtain wormhole solutions (WH) with normal matter for a relevant shape functions. The energy conditions are checked at the throat and away from the throat of the WH. The coupling parameters $α$ and $λ$ in the gravitational action play an…
