Utilising the master equation with source for perturbations of the Schwarzschild-Tangherlini solution, we construct perturbative solutions representing a black hole accelerated by a string in higher dimensions. We show that such solutions can be uniquely determined by a single function representing the local tension of the string, under natural asymptotic and regularity conditions. We further study whether we can construct a localised braneworld black hole solution from such a solution by cutting off a region containing the string by a hypersurface and putting a vacuum brane on the boundary. We find that the solution corresponding to the string with constant tension does not allow such brane configuration when the bulk spacetime dimension is greater than four, in contrast to the four dimensional case. Further, we show that there exist infinitely many localised braneworld black hole solutions in the perturbative sense for four-dimensional bulk spacetime, if we allow non-uniform string tensions.
In this presentation, I review recent work with Mike Appels and David Kubiznak on thermodynamics of accelerating black holes. I start by reviewing the geometry of accelerating black holes, focussing on the conical deficit responsible for the 'force' causing the black hole to accelerate. Then I discuss black hole thermodynamics with conical deficits, showing how to include the tension of the deficit as a thermodynamic variable, and introducing a canonically conjugate {\it thermodynamic length}. Finally, I describe the thermodynamics of the slowly accelerating black hole in anti-de Sitter spacet…
We introduce a new set of chemical variables for the accelerating black hole. We show how these expressions suggest that conical defects emerging from a black hole can be considered as true hair -- a new charge that the black hole can carry -- and discuss the impact of conical deficits on black hole thermodynamics from this `chemical' perspective. We conclude by proving a new {\it Reverse Isoperimetric Inequality} for black holes with conical defects.
Hawking radiation as a quantum tunneling phenomena from accelerating BTZ black holes is presented in this work. We have calculated the Dirac particle's Hawking radiation from the horizon of the accelerating BTZ black hole. WKB approximation is applied to Dirac equation in the background of three dimensional black holes. This procedure gives us the tunneling probability, which we have used to calculate the Hawking temperature of the background three-dimensional black hole. Our study is consistent with the previous studies in the absence of the acceleration parameter. We have also studied the qu…
We obtain a charged accelerating AdS black hole solution in $f(R)$ gravity and investigate its thermodynamic behaviour. We consider low-acceleration black holes that do not have an acceleration horizon and obtain the first law of thermodynamics for them. We further study the parameter space of charged slowly accelerating $f(R)$ AdS black holes before investigating the behaviour of the free energy in both the canonical and grand canonical ensembles. We find a generalization of the reverse isoperimetric inequality, applicable to black holes in $f(R)$ gravity, that indicates these black holes can…
The near horizon geometry of the rotating C-metric, describing accelerating Kerr-Newman black holes, is analysed. It is shown that, at extremality, even though not it is isomorphic to the extremal Kerr-Newman, it remains a warped and twisted product of $AdS_2 \times S^2$. Therefore the methods of the Kerr/CFT correspondence can successfully be applied to build a CFT dual model, whose entropy reproduce, through the Cardy formula, the Beckenstein-Hawking entropy of the accelerating black hole. The mass of accelerating Kerr-Newman black hole, which fulfil the first law of thermodynamics, is prese…
Due to the acceleration of the black hole, the circular orbits of the photons will deviate from the equatorial plane and the property of the black hole shadow will change. We find that the latitude of the circular orbit increases with the increasing acceleration and then show that the observer's inclination angles which make the shadow radius and the shadow distortion maximum increase with the increasing acceleration for the accelerating Kerr black hole.
We study the thermodynamics of accelerating asymptotically AdS black holes with scalar hair in four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theories, which can be embedded in gauged supergravities for specific dilaton coupling constants. These accelerating black holes are described by charged dilaton C metrics, which have unique features but are almost unexplored before. Thermodynamics of slowly accelerating black holes is generalized to include scalar hair. We find that properly accounting for mixed boundary conditions for the scalar field leads to standard consistent first law and other thermod…
We show how a recently discovered black ring solution with a rotating 2-sphere can be turned into two new solutions of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. The first is a four-dimensional solution describing a pair of oppositely charged, extremal black holes--known as a black dihole--undergoing uniform acceleration. The second is a five-dimensional solution describing a pair of concentric, static extremal black rings carrying opposite dipole charges--a so-called black di-ring. The properties of both solutions, which turn out to be formally very similar, are analyzed in detail. We also present, in …
We study the quantum tunneling of scalars from charged accelerating and rotating black hole with NUT parameter. For this purpose we use the charged Klein-Gordon equation. We apply WKB approximation and the Hamilton-Jacobi method to solve charged the Klein-Gordon equation. We find the tunneling probability of outgoing charged scalars from the event horizon of this black hole, and hence the Hawking temperature for this black hole.
We investigate the properties of holographic heat engines with an uncharged accelerating non-rotating AdS black hole as the working substance in a benchmarking scheme. We find that the efficiencies of the black hole heat engines can be influenced by both the size of the benchmark circular cycle and the cosmic string tension as a thermodynamic variable. In general, the efficiency can be increased by enlarging the cycle, but is still constrained by a universal bound $2π/(π+4)$ as expected. A cross-comparison of the efficiencies of the accelerating black hole heat engines and Schwarzschild-AdS bl…
In this paper we have examined the validity of a proposed definition of gravitational entropy in the context of accelerating black hole solutions of the Einstein field equations, which represent the realistic black hole solutions. We have adopted a phenomenological approach proposed in Rudjord et al [20] and expanded by Romero et al [21], in which the Weyl curvature hypothesis is tested against the expressions for the gravitational entropy. Considering the $C$-metric for the accelerating black holes, we have evaluated the gravitational entropy and the corresponding entropy density for four dif…
We show how the Weyl formalism allows metrics to be written down which correspond to arbitrary numbers of collinear accelerating neutral black holes in 3+1 dimensions. The black holes have arbitrary masses and different accelerations and share a common acceleration horizon. In the general case, the black holes are joined by cosmic strings or struts that provide the necessary forces that, together with the inter black hole gravitational attractions, produce the acceleration. In the cases of two and three black holes, the parameters may be chosen so that the outermost black hole is pulled along …
We address a long-standing problem of describing the thermodynamics of a charged accelerating black hole. We derive a standard first law of black hole thermodynamics, with the usual identification of entropy proportional to the area of the event horizon -- even though the event horizon contains a conical singularity. This result not only extends the applicability of black hole thermodynamics to realms previously not anticipated, it also opens a possibility for studying novel properties of an important class of exact radiative solutions of Einstein equations describing accelerated objects. We d…
We consider spin-3/2 particles on the background of general accelerating black holes and C-metric. The Rarita-Schwinger equations of spin-3/2 particles are analyzed on these backgrounds. The emission and absorption probabilities of the spin-3/2 particles on these spacetimes are calculated. These backgrounds which we analyze contain both black hole horizon and acceleration horizon, and have general electric and magnetic charges, rotation, and acceleration parameter. The properties of the spin-3/2 field near the acceleration horizon are also computed.
We first review spacelike stretched warped AdS$_3$ and we describe its black hole quotients by using accelerating and Poincaré coordinates. We then describe the maximal analytic extension of the black holes and present their causal diagrams. Finally, we calculate spacetime limits of the black hole phase space $(T_R,T_L)$. This is done by requiring that the identification vector $\partial_θ$ has a finite non-zero limit. The limits we obtain are the self-dual solution in accelerating or Poincaré coordinates, depending respectively on whether the limiting spacetimes are non-extremal or extremal, …
We present black hole uniqueness theorems for the C-metric and Ernst solution. The proof follows a similar strategy as that used to prove the uniqueness of the Kerr-Newman solution, however the presence of an acceleration horizon provides some critical differences. We also show how to derive the Bunting/Mazur result (on the positivity of a suitable divergence required in the proof) using new methods. We briefly explain the importance of the uniqueness of the Ernst solution in relation to the proposed black hole monopole pair creation mediated by the related instanton.
Using a reasonable choice in normalizing the timelike Killing vector, we investigate the thermodynamic properties of charged accelerating Anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes. We find that the expression of the thermodynamic mass in the first law of thermodynamics displays an inextricably intertwining behavior with the charge due to the unusual asymptotic structure of the accelerating black holes. Meanwhile, the thermodynamic length as a potential conjugate to the varying cosmic string tension is introduced and analyzed in detail, and the possible phase behavior of the charged accelerating black h…
We study the cooling-heating phase transition of the charged accelerating anti-de Sitter black hole in extended phase space, and investigate the critical behavior of this black hole in extended phase space. By calculating the thermodynamic quantities and state equation, we found that the charged accelerating AdS black hole as thermodynamic system is similar to the van der Waals system. The inversion temperature of this black hole is obtained, and cooling-heating and isenthalpic curves are plotted in T-P plane. Our results indicate that the inversion temperature for a given pressure increases w…
We construct several new families of vacuum solutions that describe black holes in uniformly accelerated motion. They generalize the C-metric to the case where the energy density and tension of the strings that pull (or push) on the black holes are independent parameters. These strings create large curvatures near their axis and when they have infinite length they modify the asymptotic properties of the spacetime, but we discuss how these features can be dealt with physically, in particular in terms of `wiggly cosmic strings'. We comment on possible extensions, and extract lessons for the prob…
Quasi-local energies for constantly accelerating observers in Bañados, Teitelboim, and Zanelli (BTZ), Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes are derived. The energies are expressed in terms of acceleration, cosmological constant, and area, quantities measurable by the observers. Based on results from quantum fields in curved spacetime for the redshifted Hawking temperature, entropy and thermodynamic-like laws are briefly explored in the three spacetimes.
Using the covariant phase space formalism, we compute the conserved charges for a solution, describing an accelerating and electrically charged Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. The metric is regular provided that the acceleration is driven by an external electric field, in spite of the usual string of the standard C-metric. The Smarr formula and the first law of black hole thermodynamics are fulfilled. The resulting mass has the same form of the Christodoulou-Ruffini mass formula. On the basis of these results, we can extrapolate the mass and thermodynamics of the rotating C-metric, which descri…

A C-metric type solution for general relativity with cosmological constant is presented in 2+1 dimensions. It is interpreted as a three-dimensional black hole accelerated by a strut. Positive values of the cosmological constant are admissible too. Some embeddings of this metric in the 3+1 space-time are considered: accelerating BTZ black string and a black ring where the gravitational force is sustained by the acceleration.
We generalize the first law of black hole mechanics to the rotating, charged C-metric and to the Ernst metric, both of which have the charged C-metric as a special case. All of these metrics are (3+1)-dimensional, have vanishing cosmological constant, and physically describe a pair of black holes pulled apart to null infinity by some external force. Our first laws are global in the sense of applying to an entire patch of spacetime, as opposed to a neighborhood of the black hole. They are formulated with respect to "boost time", whose primacy is motivated by the celestial holographic approach t…
We investigate the stable circular orbits of the spinning test particles around the accelerating Kerr black hole on the equatorial plane. To this end, we first calculate the equations of motion and analyze the parameter space for the particles. We study the effect of the particle's spin and the black hole's acceleration on the conserved angular momentum, conserved energy and radius of the spinning test particle on the innermost stable circular orbit. We find that the effect of the particle's spin on the orbit parameters is almost linear, the effect of the black hole's acceleration on those par…
The thermodynamic behaviour of a charged and accelerating AdS black hole is studied in the context of extended phase space with variable cosmological constant. When compared to the charged AdS black hole without acceleration, a remarkable new feature of `snapping swallowtails' appears. Namely, for any black hole with charge $Q$ and any string tension $μ$ causing the acceleration of the black hole, there exists a transition pressure $P_t=3μ^2/(8πQ^2)$ at which the standard swallowtail `snaps', causing the branch of low temperature black holes to completely disappear, leading to a pressure induc…
Using the ``complexity equals action''(CA) conjecture, for an ordinary charged system, it has been shown that the late-time complexity growth rate is given by a difference between the value of $Φ_{H}Q+Ω_H J$ on the inner and outer horizons. In this paper, we investigate the complexity of the boundary quantum system with conical deficits. From the perspective of holography, we consider a charged accelerating black holes which contain conical deficits on the north and south poles in the bulk gravitational theory and evaluate the complexity growth rate using the CA conjecture. As a result, the la…
The extendibility of spacetime and the existence of weak solutions to the Einstein field equations beyond Cauchy horizons, is a crucial ingredient to examine the limits of General Relativity. Strong Cosmic Censorship serves as a firewall for gravitation by demanding inextendibility of spacetime beyond the Cauchy horizon. For asymptotically flat spacetimes, the predominance of the blueshift instability and the subsequent formation of a mass-inflation singularity at the Cauchy horizon have, so far, substantiated the conjecture. Accelerating black holes, described by the $C-$metric, are exact sol…
In this paper, we investigate the $P-V$ criticality and phase transition of charged accelerating AdS black holes in the extended thermodynamic phase space in analogy between black hole system and Van der Waals liquid-gas system, where the cosmological constant $Λ$ is treated as a thermodynamical variable interpreted as dynamic pressure and its conjugate quantity is the thermodynamic volume of the black holes. When the electric charge vanishes, we find that no $P-V$ criticality will appear but the Hawking-Page like phase transition will be present, just as what Schwarzschild-AdS black holes beh…
Thermodynamics of a large family of black holes from electrovacuum solutions of Einstein's equations is studied. This family includes rotating and non-accelerating black holes with NUT charge, and rotating and accelerating black holes. The surface gravity, Hawking temperature and the area laws for these black holes are presented. The first law of thermodynamics is also given. An interesting outcome of our analysis is the restriction obtained on the magnitude of acceleration for these black holes.
We study the thermodynamics of $AdS_4$ black hole solutions of Einstein-Maxwell theory that are accelerating, rotating, and carry electric and magnetic charges. We focus on the class for which the black hole horizon is a spindle and can be uplifted on regular Sasaki-Einstein spaces to give solutions of $D=11$ supergravity that are free from conical singularities. We use holography to calculate the Euclidean on-shell action and to define a set of conserved charges which give rise to a first law. We identify a complex locus of supersymmetric and non-extremal solutions, defined through an analyti…
We show how to obtain a consistent thermodynamic description of accelerating asymptotically AdS black holes, extending our previous results by including charge and rotation. We find that the key ingredient of consistent thermodynamics is to ensure that the system is not over-constrained by including the possibility of varying the `string' tensions that are responsible for the acceleration of the black hole, yielding a first law of full cohomogeneity. The first law assumes the standard form, with the entropy given by one quarter of the horizon area and other quantities identified by standard me…
We present a new solution describing a pair of rotating, charged, and accelerating black holes in in the low energy limit of heterotic string theory. To obtain the solution, we apply the Hassan-Sen transformation to the neutral accelerating Kerr spacetime as the seed solution. Some properties of the black hole solutions are discussed.
We present a careful study of accelerating black holes in anti-de Sitter spacetime, formulating the thermodynamics and resolving discrepancies that have appeared in previous investigations of the topic. We compute the dual stress-energy tensor for the spacetime and identify the energy density associated with a static observer at infinity. The dual energy-momentum tensor can be written as a three-dimensional perfect fluid plus a non-hydrodynamic contribution with a universal coefficient which is given in gauge theory variables. We demonstrate that both the holographic computation and the method…
We investigate the thermodynamic phase behaviour of rotating and slowly accelerating AdS black holes. While we find some similarities with the non-rotating charged counterparts, such as the peculiar phenomena of "snapping swallow tails" we also find subtle but significant distinctions that can be attributed to a qualitatively modified parameter space of the solution. Consequently the zeroth order phase transition now occurs over a range of pressures, mini-entropic black holes no longer exist in the regime of slow acceleration, and the "no black hole region" emerges continuously---from a zero t…
Hawking radiation of uncharged and charged scalars from accelerating and rotating black holes is studied. We calculate the tunneling probabilities of these particles from the rotation and acceleration horizons of these black holes. Using the tunneling method we recover the correct Hawking temperature as well.
