Ergodic properties of rational maps are studied, generalising the work of F.\ Ledrappier. A new construction allows for simpler proofs of stronger results. Very general conformal measures are considered. Equivalent conditions are given for an ergodic invariant probability measure with positive Lyapunov exponent to be absolutely continuous with respect to a general conformal measure. If they hold, we can construct an induced expanding Markov map with integrable return time which generates the invariant measure.
We study the dimension spectrum for Lyapunov exponents for rational maps acting on the Riemann sphere and characterize it by means of the Legendre-Fenchel transform of the hidden variational pressure. This pressure is defined by means of the variational principle with respect to non-atomic invariant probability measures and is associated to certain $σ$-finite conformal measures. This allows to extend previous results to exceptional rational maps.
We study the dimension spectrum of Lyapunov exponents for multimodal maps of the interval and their generalizations. We also present related results for rational maps on the Riemann sphere.
We establish a quantitative approximation formula of the Lyapunov exponent of a rational function of degree more than one over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$ that is complete with respect to a non-trivial and possibly non-archimedean absolute value, in terms of the multipliers of periodic points of the rational function. This quantifies both our former convergence result over general fields and the one-dimensional version of Berteloot--Dupont--Molino's one over archimedean fields.
We prove that a $C^3$ critical circle map without periodic points has zero Lyapunov exponent with respect to its unique invariant Borel probability measure. Moreover, no critical point of such a map satisfy the Collet-Eckmann condition. This result is proved directly from the well-known real a-priori bounds, without using Pesin's theory. We also show how our methods yield an analogous result for infinitely renormalizable unimodal maps of any combinatorial type. Finally we discuss an application of these facts to the study of neutral measures of certain rational maps of the Riemann sphere.
We prove that if A is the basin of immediate attraction to a periodic attracting or parabolic point for a rational map f on the Riemann sphere, if $A$ is completely invariant (i.e. $f^{-1}(A)=A$), and if $μ$ is an arbitrary $f$-invariant measure with positive Lyapunov exponents on the boundary of $A$, then $μ$-almost every point $q$ in the boundary of $A$ is accessible along a curve from $A$. In fact we prove the accessability of every "good" $q$ i.e. such $q$ for which "small neighbourhoods arrive at large scale" under iteration of $f$. This generalizes Douady-Eremenko-Levin-Petersen theorem …
We give two kinds of approximation of Lyapunov exponents of rational functions of degree more than one on the projective line over more general fields than that of complex numbers.
Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 that is complete with respect to a non-archimedean absolute value. We establish a locally uniform approximation formula of the Lyapunov exponent of a rational map $f$ of $\mathbb{P}^1$ of degree $d>1$ over $K$, in terms of the multipliers of $n$-periodic points of $f$, with an explicit control in terms of $n$, $f$ and $K$. As an immediate consequence, we obtain an estimate for the blow-up of the Lyapunov exponent near a pole in one-dimensional families of rational maps over $K$. Combined with our former archimedean version, this non-…
In an algebraic family of rational maps of $\mathbb{P}^1$, we show that, for almost every parameter for the trace of the bifurcation current of a marked critical value, the critical value is Collet-Eckmann. This extends previous results of Graczyk and Świcatek in the unicritical family, using Makarov theorem. Our methods are based instead on ideas of laminar currents theory.
Let $G$ be a semisimple Lie group acting on a space $X$, let $μ$ be a compactly supported measure on $G$, and let $A$ be a strongly irreducible linear cocycle over the action of $G$. We then have a random walk on $X$, and let $T$ be the associated shift map. We show that the cocycle $A$ over the action of $T$ is conjugate to a block conformal cocycle. This statement is used in the recent paper by Eskin-Mirzakhani on the classifications of invariant measures for the SL(2,R) action on moduli space. The ingredients of the proof are essentially contained in the papers of Guivarch and Raugi and als…
We consider the problem of computing the Lyapunov exponents of reversible cellular automata (CA). We show that the class of reversible CA with right Lyapunov exponent $2$ cannot be separated algorithmically from the class of reversible CA whose right Lyapunov exponents are at most $2-δ$ for some absolute constant $δ>0$. Therefore there is no algorithm that, given as an input a description of an arbitrary reversible CA $F$ and a positive rational number $ε>0$, outputs the Lyapunov exponents of $F$ with accuracy $ε$. We also compute the average Lyapunov exponents (with respect to the uniform mea…
We consider a transversally conformal foliation $\mathcal{F}$ of a closed manifold $M$ endowed with a smooth Riemannian metric whose restriction to each leaf is negatively curved. We prove that it satisfies the following dichotomy. Either there is a transverse holonomy-invariant measure for $\mathcal{F}$, or the foliated geodesic flow admits a finite number of physical measures, which have negative transverse Lyapunov exponents and whose basin cover a set full for the Lebesgue measure. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for the foliated geodesic flow to be partially hyperbolic in…
Consider a family of K3 surfaces over a hyperbolic curve (i.e. Riemann surface). Their second cohomology groups form a local system, and we show that its top Lyapunov exponent is a rational number. One proof uses the Kuga-Satake construction, which reduces the question to Hodge structures of weight 1. A second proof uses integration by parts. The case of maximal Lyapunov exponent corresponds to modular families, given by the Kummer construction on a product of isogenous elliptic curves.
Bifurcation loci in the moduli space of degree $d$ rational maps are shaped by the hypersurfaces defined by the existence of a cycle of period $n$ and multiplier 0 or $e^{iθ}$. Using potential-theoretic arguments, we establish two equidistribution properties for these hypersurfaces with respect to the bifurcation current. To this purpose we first establish approximation formulas for the Lyapunov function. In degree $d=2$, this allows us to build holomorphic motions and show that the bifurcation locus has a lamination structure in the regions where an attracting basin of fixed period exists.
Let $K$ be a complete, algebraically closed, non-Archimedean valued field, and let $\textbf{P}^1$ denote the Berkovich projective line over $K$. The Lyapunov exponent for a rational map $ϕ\in K(z)$ of degree $d\geq 2$ measures the exponential rate of growth along a typical orbit of $ϕ$. When $ϕ$ is defined over $\mathbb{C}$, the Lyapunov exponent is bounded below by $\frac{1}{2}\log d$. In this article, we give a lower bound for $L(ϕ)$ for maps $ϕ$ defined over non-Archimedean fields $K$. The bound depends only on the degree $d$ and the Lipschitz constant of $ϕ$. For maps $ϕ$ whose Julia sets …
This research report outlines work, partially joint with Jeremy Kahn and Kevin Pilgrim, which gives parallel theories of elastic graphs and conformal surfaces with boundary. One one hand, this lets us tell when one rubber band network is looser than another, and on the other hand tell when one conformal surface embeds in another. We apply this to give a new characterization of hyperbolic critically finite rational maps among branched self-coverings of the sphere, by a positive criterion: a branched covering is equivalent to a hyperbolic rational map if and only if there is an elastic graph wit…
We study invariant measures and thermodynamic formalism for a class of endomorphisms $F_T$ which are only piecewise differentiable on countably many pieces and non-conformal. The endomorphism $F_T$ has parametrized countably generated limit sets in stable fibers. We prove a Global Volume Lemma for $F_T$ implying that the projections of equilibrium measures are exact dimensional on a non-compact global basic set $J_T$. A dimension formula for these global measures is obtained by using the Lyapunov exponents and marginal entropies. Then, we study the equilibrium measures of geometric potentials,…
Let $Λ$ be a quasi-projective variety and assume that, either $Λ$ is a subvariety of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_d$ of degree $d$ rational maps, or $Λ$ parametrizes an algebraic family $(f_λ)_{λ\inΛ}$ of degree $d$ rational maps on $\mathbb{P}^1$. We prove the equidistribution of parameters having $p$ distinct neutral cycles towards the $p$-th bifurcation current letting the periods of the cycles go to $\infty$, with an exponential speed of convergence. We deduce several fundamental consequences of this result on equidistribution and counting of hyperbolic components. A key step of the proof…
