We propose and demonstrate theoretically a method to achieve and design optical nonlinear responses through a light-mediated spatial hybridization of different standard nonlinearities. The mechanism is based on the fact that optical propagation through a spatial composite of different nonlinear media is governed by an effective nonlinear response if the spatial scale of the sequence is much smaller than the light diffraction length. We apply our general approach to the significant case of centrosymmetric photorefractive crystal biased by a periodically modulated external voltage to predict strictly bending-free miniaturized soliton propagation.
We propose an effective route to fully control the phase of plane waves reflected from electrically (optically) thin sheets. This becomes possible using engineered artificial full-reflection layers (metamirrors) as arrays of electrically small resonant bi-anisotropic particles. In this scenario, fully reflecting mirrors do not contain any continuous ground plane, but only arrays of small particles. Bi-anisotropic omega coupling is required to get asymmetric response in reflection phase for plane waves incident from the opposite sides of the composite mirror. It is shown that with this concept …
Optical pulling forces or tractor beams can pull particles against light propagation by redirecting the incident photons forward. This is typically achieved using Bessel beams with very small half-cone angles, which considerably limits its applicability. One can circumvent such issue by using a superposition of plane waves. In order to investigate optical pulling forces exerted by a pair of non-colinear plane waves, we develop a theoretical framework based on Mie theory, Debye potentials and Wigner rotation matrices. We apply this framework to calculate the optical pulling force on metallo-die…
We present a procedure for nonlinearity management of metal-dielectric composites. Varying the volume fraction occupied by silver nanoparticles suspended in acetone we could cancel the refractive index related to the third-order susceptibility, $χ_{eff}^{(3)}$, and the nonlinear refraction behavior was due to the fifth-order susceptibility, $χ_{eff}^{(5)}$. Hence, in a cross-phase modulation experiment, we demonstrated for the first time the effect of spatial-modulation- instability due to $χ_{eff}^{(5)}$. The results are corroborated with numerical calculations based on a generalized Maxwell-…
We have derived the local electric field inside graded metal-dielectric composite films with weak nonlinearity analytically, which further yields the effective linear dielectric constant and third-order nonlinear susceptibility of the graded structures. As a result, the composition-dependent gradation can produce a broad resonant plasmon band in the optical region, resulting in a large enhancement of the optical nonlinearity and hence a large figure of merit.
Transparent conductive oxides such as indium tin oxide (ITO) bear the potential to deliver efficient all-optical functionality due to their record-breaking optical nonlinearity at epsilon near zero (ENZ) wavelengths. All-optical applications generally involve more than one beam, but the coherent interaction between beams has not previously been discussed in materials with a hot electron nonlinearity. Here we study the optical nonlinearity at ENZ in ITO and show that spatial and temporal interference has important consequences in a two beam geometry. Our pump-probe results reveal a polarization…
We construct families of optical semi-discrete composite solitons (SDCSs), with one or two independent propagation constants, supported by a planar slab waveguide, XPM-coupled to a periodic array of stripes. Both structures feature the cubic nonlinearity and support intrinsic modes with mutually orthogonal polarizations. We report three species of SDCSs, odd, even, and twisted ones, the first type being stable. Transverse motion of phase-tilted solitons, with potential applications to beam steering, is considered too.
We consider an anisotropic homogenized composite medium (HCM) arising from isotropic particulate component phases based on ellipsoidal geometries. For cubically nonlinear component phases, the corresponding zeroth-order strong-permittivity-fluctuation theory (SPFT) (which is equivalent to the Bruggeman homogenization formalism) and second-order SPFT are established and used to estimate the constitutive properties of the HCM. The relationship between the component phase particulate geometry and the HCM constitutive properties is explored. Significant differences are highlighted between the esti…
We have developed a nonlinear differential effective dipole approximation (NDEDA), in an attempt to investigate the effective linear and third-order nonlinear susceptibility of composite media in which graded spherical inclusions with weak nonlinearity are randomly embedded in a linear host medium. Alternatively, based on a first-principles approach, we derived exactly the linear local field inside the graded particles having power-law dielectric gradation profiles. As a result, we obtain also the effective linear dielectric constant and third-order nonlinear susceptibility. Excellent agreemen…
Metamaterials, artificial media structured on the subwavelength scale offer a rich paradigm for developing unique photonic functionalities ranging from negative index of refraction and directionally asymmetric transmission to slowing light. Here we demonstrate that a combination of carbon nanotubes with a photonic metamaterial offers a new paradigm for the development of nonlinear media with exceptionally strong ultrafast nonlinear response invaluable in photonic applications. It is underpinned by strong coupling between weakly radiating Fano-type resonant plasmonic modes and the excitonic res…
Nonlinear processes are at the core of many optical technologies including lasers, information processing, sensing, and security, and require optimised materials suitable for nanoscale integration. Here we demonstrate the emergence of a strong bulk second-order nonlinear response in a composite plasmonic nanorod material comprised of centrosymmetric materials. The metamaterial provides equally strong generation of the p-polarized second harmonic light in response to both s- and p-polarized excitation. We develop an effective-medium description of the underlying physics, compare its predictions…
Aluminum nitride and silicon nitride have recently emerged as important nonlinear optical materials in integrated photonics respectively for their quadratic and cubic optical nonlinearity. A composite aluminum nitride and silicon nitride waveguide structure, if realized, will simultaneously allow highly efficient second and third harmonic generation on the same chip platform and therefore assists 2f-3f self-referenced frequency combs. On-chip third harmonic generation, being a higher order nonlinear optics effect, is more demanding than second harmonic generation due to the large frequency dif…
We present eight types of spatial optical solitons which are possible in a model of a planar waveguide that includes a dual-channel trapping structure and competing (cubic-quintic) nonlinearity. Among the families of trapped beams are symmetric and antisymmetric solitons of "broad" and "narrow" types, composite states, built as combinations of broad and narrow beams with identical or opposite signs ("unipolar" and "bipolar" states, respectively), and "single-sided" broad and narrow beams trapped, essentially, in a single channel. The stability of the families is investigated via eigenvalues of…
We demonstrate that an array of discrete waveguides on a slab substrate, both featuring the $χ^{2}$ nonlinearity, supports stable solitons composed of discrete and continuous components. Two classes of fundamental composite solitons are identified: ones consisting of a discrete fundamental-frequency (FF) component in the waveguide array, coupled to a continuous second-harmonic (SH) component in the slab waveguide, and solitons with an inverted FF/SH structure. Twisted bound states of the fundamental solitons are found too. In contrast with usual systems, the \emph{intersite-centered} fundament…
We exploit theoretically the occurrence and tunability of photonic Bloch oscillations (PBOs) in one-dimensional photonic crystals (PCs) containing nonlinear composites. Because of the enhanced third-order nonlinearity (Kerr type nonlinearity) of composites, photons undergo oscillations inside tilted photonic bands, which are achieved by the application of graded external pump electric fields on such PCs, varying along the direction perpendicular to the surface of layers. The tunability of PBOs (including amplitude and period) is readily achieved by changing the field gradient. With an appropri…
The magneto-optical effect breaks time-reversal symmetry, a unique property that makes it indispensable in nonreciprocal optics and topological photonics. Unfortunately, all natural materials have a rather weak magneto-optical response in the optical frequency range, posing a significant challenge to the practical application of many emerging device concepts. Here we theoretically propose a composite material system that exhibits an intrinsic magneto-optical response orders of magnitude stronger than most magneto-optical materials used today. This is achieved by tailoring the resonant interpla…
We investigate the polarization dependence of optical nonlinearity enhancement for a uniaxial anisotropic composite of metal nanocrystals in a dielectric host. Three cases are distinguished depending on whether the polarization is parallel, perpendicular or unpolarized with respect to the axis of anisotropy. For the parallel polarization, the results show that the 3D results are qualitatively similar to the 2D case reported recently. For the perpendicular polarization, the results are markedly different from the parallel counterpart: In contrast to the absorption, the enhancement factor actual…
Since its introduction by Sir Michael Berry in 1984, geometric phase became of fundamental importance in physics, with applications ranging from solid state physics to optics. In optics, Pancharatnam-Berry phase allows the tailoring of optical beams by a local control of their polarization. Here we discuss light propagation in the presence of an intensity-dependent local modulation of the Pancharatnam-Berry phase. The corresponding self-modulation of the wavefront counteracts the natural spreading due to diffraction, i.e., self-focusing takes place. No refractive index variation is associated …
Optical properties of metallic nanoparticles are most often considered in terms of plasmons, the coupled states of light and quasi-free electrons. Here we predict that confinement of electrons inside the nanostructure leads to another, very different, type of resonance, which determines the optical properties in the frequency range significantly below the plasmonic resonance. We demonstrate that closely placed confinement-induces resonances typically join into a single composite "super-resonance" which produces giant nonlinearity at low frequencies. Our simulations show how such nonlinearities…
Epsilon-near-zero materials are exceptional candidates for studying electrodynamics and nonlinear optical processes at the nanoscale. We demonstrate that by alternating a metal and a highly doped conducting-oxide, the epsilon-near-zero regime may be accessed resulting in an anisotropic, composite nanostructure that significantly enhances nonlinear interactions. Using two independent and different computation techniques we show that the structure can enhance the local field intensity by nearly two orders of magnitudes, in large part due to the onset of the effective anisotropy. The investigatio…
