We study the eigenmodes of a slab of a wire metamaterial and demonstrate that such a waveguiding structure supports deep-subwavelength propagating modes exhibiting properties of a single-mode waveguide at any fixed frequency below the plasma frequency of metal wires. We compare our analytical results with the dispersion relations extracted from the experimental measurements.

Surface plasmon polaritons scattering from 2D subwavelength silicon wires is investigated using finite difference time domain method. It is shown that coupling an incident surface plasmon polariton to inter-cavity modes of the particle can dramatically changes transmitted fields and plasmon induced forces. In particular, both transmission and optical forces are highly sensitive to the particle size that is related to the excitation of whispering gallery modes or standing-wave modes depending on the particle shape and size. We present a theoretical study of the spontaneous emission of a line dipole source embedded in a graphene--coated subwavelength wire of arbitrary shape. The modification of the emission and the radiation efficiencies are calculated by means of a rigorous electromagnetic method based on Green's second identity. y coating a cover layer with metallization of cut wire array, the transmission of transverse electric waves (TE; the electric field is parallel to the slits) through subwavelength slits in a thin metallic film is significantly enhanced. An 800-fold enhanced transmission is obtained compared to the case without the cut wires. It is demonstrated that a TE incident wave is highly confined by the cut wires due to the excitation of the electric dipole-like resonance, and then effectively squeezed into and through the subwavelength slits.

We designed a cut-wire-pair metasurface that works as a transparent terahertz half-wave plate, by matching the electric and magnetic resonances of the structure. Due to the impedance matching nature of the resonances, a large transmission phase shift between the orthogonal polarizations was achieved, while permitting a high transmission. We present an optical investigation of surface plasmon polaritons propagating along nanoscale Au-wires, lithographically defined on GaAs substrates. We predict theoretically that stable subwavelength plasmonic lattice solitons (PLSs) are formed in arrays of metallic nanowires embedded in a nonlinear medium.
