In this paper we present a two-field inflation model, which distinguishes itself with a non-canonical kinetic lagrangian and comes from the large volume approach to the moduli stabilization in flux compactification of type IIB superstring on a Calabi-Yau orientifold of $h^{(1,2)} > h^{(1,1)}\geq 4$. The Kähler moduli are classified as volume modulus, heavy moduli and two light moduli. The axion-dilaton, complex structure moduli and all heavy Kähler moduli including the volume modulus are frozen by nonperturbatively corrected flux superpotential and the $α^\prime$-corrected Kähler potential in the large volume limit. The minimum of the scalar potential at which the heavy moduli are stabilized provides the dominant potential energy for the survived light Kähler moduli. We consider a simplified case where the axionic components in the light Kähler moduli are further stabilized at the potential minimum and only the geometrical components are taken as the scalar fields to drive an assisted-like inflation. For a certain range of moduli stabilization parameters and inflation initial conditions, we obtain a nearly flat power spectrum of the curvature perturbation, with $n_s\approx 0.96$ at Hubble-exit, and an inflationary energy scale of $3 \times 10^{14}$ GeV. In our model, significant correlation exists between the curvature and isocurvature perturbations on super-Hubble scales so that at the end of inflation a great deal of the curvature power spectrum originates from this correlation.
The problems of attempting inflationary model-building in a theory containing a dilaton are explained. In particular, I study the shape of the dilaton potential today and during inflation, based on a weakly-coupled heterotic string model where corrections to the Kahler potential are assumed to be responsible for dilaton stabilization. Although no specific model-building is attempted, if the inflationary energy density is related to the scale of gaugino condensation, then the dilaton may be stabilized close enough to today's value that there is no significant change in the GUT scale coupling. T…
We introduce a new class of models of Higgs inflation using the superconformal approach to supergravity by modifying the K$\ddot{a}$hler geometry. Using such a mechanism, we construct a phenomenological functional form of a new K$\ddot{a}$hler potential. From this we construct various types of models which are characterized by a superconformal symmetry breaking parameter $χ$, and depending on the numerical values of $χ$ we classify all of the proposed models into three categories. Models with minimal coupling are identified by $χ=\pm\frac{2}{3}$ branch which are made up of shift symmetry prese…
Inflationary models whose vacuum energy arises from a D-term are believed not to suffer from the supergravity eta problem of F-term inflation. That is, D-term models have the desirable property that the inflaton mass can naturally remain much smaller than the Hubble scale. We observe that this advantage is lost in models based on string compactifications whose volume is stabilized by a nonperturbative superpotential: the F-term energy associated with volume stabilization causes the eta problem to reappear. Moreover, any shift symmetries introduced to protect the inflaton mass will typically be…
We consider supergravity compactifications on 6-dimensional twisted tori, which are 5-torus fibrations of the circle. The motion of branes on such manifolds can lead to power-law potentials at low energy, that may be useful for inflation. We classify the possible low energy potentials one can obtain by wrapping branes on different cycles of the fibre. Turning to the problem of moduli stabilization in such models, we prove a no-go result for solutions with parametrically small cosmological constant, under certain assumptions for the orientifolds and D-branes. We also consider the role of discre…
We study the scalar sector of type IIB superstring theory compactified on Calabi-Yau orientifolds as a place to find a mechanism of inflation in the early universe. In the large volume limit, one can stabilize the moduli in stages using perturbative method. We relate the systematics of moduli stabilization with methods to reduce the number of possible inflatons, which in turn lead to a simpler inflation analysis. Calculating the order-of-magnitude of terms in the equation of motion, we show that the methods are in fact valid. We then give the examples where these methods are used in the litera…
We construct a no-scale model of inflation with a single modulus whose real and imaginary parts are fixed by simple power-law corrections to the no-scale K{\" a}hler potential. Assuming an uplift of the minimum of the effective potential, the model yields a suitable number of e-folds of expansion and values of the tilt in the scalar cosmological density perturbations and of the ratio of tensor and scalar perturbations that are compatible with measurements of the cosmic microwave background radiation.
We study the back-reaction of moduli fields on the inflaton potential in generic models of F-term inflation. We derive the moduli corrections as a power series in the ratio of Hubble scale and modulus mass. The general result is illustrated with two examples, hybrid inflation and chaotic inflation. We find that in both cases the decoupling of moduli dynamics and inflation requires moduli masses close to the scale of grand unification. For smaller moduli masses the CMB observables are strongly affected.
We study the cosmological inflation from the viewpoint of the moduli stabilization. We study the scenario that the superpotential has a large value during the inflation era enough to stabilize moduli, but it is small in the true vacuum. This scenario is discussed by using a simple model, one type of hybrid models.
Recent developments on large scale string moduli stabilization via non-geometric fluxes are reviewed. In the framework of type IIB orientifolds on fluxed Calabi-Yau manifolds, the existence of so-called flux-scaling minima provides a good starting point for the realization of parametrically controlled models of F-term axion monodromy inflation.
We study the supergravity hybrid inflation model of Ref.[1] in the presence of a modulus field. The eta-problem is solved by a shift symmetry for the inflaton, which protects the inflaton mass even in the presence of the modulus field. Inflation is (nearly) unaffected by moduli stabilization, provided the scale of supersymmetry breaking in the post-inflation vacuum is small. Therefore the model has the nice phenomenology that it combines low scale supersymmetry breaking with high scale (grand unification scale) inflation.
Radion stabilization is analyzed in 5-dimensional models with branes in the presence of Gauss-Bonnet interactions. The Goldberger-Wise mechanism is considered for static and inflating backgrounds. The necessary and sufficient conditions for stability are given for the static case. The influence of the Gauss-Bonnet term on the radion mass and the inter-brane distance is analyzed and illustrated by numerical examples. The interplay between the radion stabilization and the cosmological constant problem is discussed.
We analyze the interplay between Kähler moduli stabilization and chaotic inflation in supergravity. While heavy moduli decouple from inflation in the supersymmetric limit, supersymmetry breaking generically introduces non-decoupling effects. These lead to inflation driven by a soft mass term, $m_φ^2 \sim m m_{3/2}$, where $m$ is a supersymmetric mass parameter. This scenario needs no stabilizer field, but the stability of moduli during inflation imposes a large supersymmetry breaking scale, $m_{3/2} \gg H$, and a careful choice of initial conditions. This is illustrated in three prominent exam…
We study the dilaton stabilization in the D-brane world in which a D-brane constitutes our universe. The dilaton can be stabilized due to the interplay between the D-brane tension and the negative scalar curvature of extra dimensions. Cosmic evolution of the dilaton is investigated with the obtained dilaton potential and it is found that inflation can be realized before the settlement of the dilaton.
Equipped with concrete examples of Type IIB orientifolds featuring poly-instanton corrections to the superpotential, the effects on moduli stabilization and inflationary cosmology are analyzed. Working in the framework of the LARGE volume scenario, the Kaehler modulus related to the size of the four-cycle supporting the poly-instanton contributes sub-dominantly to the scalar potential. It is shown that this Kaehler modulus gets stabilized and, by displacing it from its minimum, can play the role of an inflaton. Subsequent cosmological implications are discussed and compared to experimental dat…
We study moduli stabilization in combination with inflation in heterotic orbifold compactifications in the light of a large Hubble scale and the favored tensor-to-scalar ratio $r \approx 0.05$. To account for a trans-Planckian field range we implement aligned natural inflation. Although there is only one universal axion in heterotic constructions, further axions from the geometric moduli can be used for alignment and inflation. We argue that such an alignment is rather generic on orbifolds, since all non-perturbative terms are determined by modular weights of the involved fields and the Dedeki…
Warped braneworld models has the potential to provide a plausible resolution to the gauge hierarchy problem but at the cost of introduction of an additional field, namely the inter-brane separation or, the radion field. Providing an appropriate stabilization scheme for the radion field has long been sought for. In this work, we discuss dynamical stabilization of the radion field in the context of early universe cosmology. We show that by allowing the branes to be \emph{non-flat} and \emph{dynamical} a radion potential is naturally generated which can trigger the inflationary phase of the early…
We study closed-string moduli stabilization in Higgs-otic inflation in Type IIB orientifold backgrounds with fluxes. In this setup large-field inflation is driven by the vacuum energy of mobile D7-branes. Imaginary selfdual (ISD) three-form fluxes in the background source a $μ$-term and the necessary monodromy for large field excursions while imaginary anti-selfdual (IASD) three-form fluxes are sourced by non-perturbative contributions to the superpotential necessary for moduli stabilization. We analyze Kähler moduli stabilization and backreaction on the inflaton potential in detail. Confirmin…
We review moduli stabilization in type IIB string theory compactification with fluxes. We focus on the KKLT and Large Volume Scenario (LVS). We show that the predicted soft SUSY breaking terms in KKLT model are not phenomenological viable. In LVS, the following result for scalar mass, gaugino mass, and trilinear term is obtained: $m_0 =m_{1/2}= - A_0=m_{3/2}$, which may account for Higgs mass limit if $m_{3/2} \sim {\cal O}(1.5)$ TeV. However, in this case the relic abundance of the lightest neutralino can not be consistent with the measured limits. We also study the cosmological consequences …
We review the effects of heavy scalar fields during inflation in the framework of $\mathcal N = 1$ supergravity. Such heavy scalars can be geometric moduli from string compactifications or stabilizer fields from a different sector of the theory. Even when these fields are heavier than the Hubble scale during inflation, they generically cause backreactions which alter the dynamics of the system. Severe problems may arise when the heavy fields break supersymmetry, which is quite generic for Kähler moduli. We illustrate these effects in two examples, chaotic inflation and Starobinsky-like inflati…
In the first part of this talk, a short overview of the ongoing debate on the existence of de Sitter vacua in string theory is presented. In the second part, the moduli stabilisation and inflation are discussed in the context of type IIB/F-theory. Considering a configuration of three intersecting $D7$ branes with fluxes, it is shown that higher loop effects inducing logarithmic corrections to the Kähler potential can stabilise the Kähler moduli in a de Sitter Vacuum. When a new Fayet-Iliopoulos term is included, it is also possible to generate the required number of e-foldings and satisfy the …
The distance between BPS branes in string theory corresponds to a flat direction in the effective potential. Small deviations from supersymmetry may lead to a small uplifting of this flat direction and to brane inflation. However, this scenario can work only if the BPS properties of the branes and the corresponding flatness of the inflaton potential are preserved in the theories with the stable volume compactification. We present an ``inflaton trench'' mechanism that keeps the inflaton potential flat due to shift symmetry, which is related to near BPS symmetry in our model.
To obtain natural inflation with large tensor-to-scalar ratio in string framework, we need a special moduli stabilization mechanism which can separate the masses of real and imaginary components of Kähler moduli at different scales, and achieve a trans-Planckian axion decay constant from sub-Planckian axion decay constants. In this work, we stabilize the matter fields by F-terms and the real components of Kähler moduli by D-terms of two anomalous $U(1)_X\times U(1)_A$ symmetries strongly at high scales, while the corresponding axions remain light due to their independence on the Fayet-Iliopoul…
The simple chaotic inflation is highly consistent with the BICEP2 experiment, and no-scale supergravity can be realized naturally in various string compactifications. Thus, we construct a chaotic inflation model in no-scale supergravity inspired from Type IIB string compactification with an anomalous U(1)_X gauged symmetry. We introduce two moduli T_1 and T_2 which transform non-trivially under U(1)_X, and some pairs of fundamental quarks charged under the SU(N) x U(1)_X gauge group. The non-trivial transformations of moduli under U(1)_X lead to a moduli-dependent Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) term. T…
We demonstrate that a gas of wrapped branes in the early Universe can help resolve the cosmological Dine-Seiberg/Brustein-Steinhardt overshoot problem in the context of moduli stabilization with steep potentials in string theory. Starting from this mechanism, we propose a cosmological model with a natural setting in the context of an early phase dominated by brane and string gases. The Universe inflates at early times due to the presence of a wrapped two brane (domain wall) gas and all moduli are stabilized. A natural graceful exit from the inflationary regime is achieved. However, the basic m…
We present a variant of warped D-brane inflation by incorporating multiple sets of holomorphically-embedded D7-branes involved in moduli stabilization with extent into a warped throat. The resultant D3-brane motion depends on the D7-brane configuration and the relative position of the D3-brane in these backgrounds. The non-perturbative moduli stabilization superpotential takes the racetrack form, but the additional D3-brane open string moduli dependence provides more flexibilities in model building. For concreteness, we consider D3-brane motion in the warped deformed conifold with the presence…
We investigate the embedding of brane anti-brane inflation into a concrete type IIB string theory compactification with all moduli fixed. Specifically, we are considering a D3-brane, whose position represents the inflaton $ϕ$, in a warped conifold throat in the presence of supersymmetrically embedded D7-branes and an anti D3-brane localized at the tip of the warped conifold cone. After presenting the moduli stabilization analysis for a general D7-brane embedding, we concentrate on two explicit models, the Ouyang and the Kuperstein embeddings. We analyze whether the forces, induced by moduli st…
Supersymmetric compactification with moderately large radius (${\rm Re}< T > \sim {\cal O}(10)$ or more) not only accommodates supersymmetric unification, but also provides candidates for an inflaton in the form of geometric moduli; the value of ${\rm Re}< T > > 1$ may be used as a parameter that brings corrections to the inflaton potential under control. Motivated by a bottom-up idea "right-handed sneutrino inflation" scenario, we study whether complex structure moduli can play some role during the slow-roll inflation and/or reheating process in this moderately large radius regime. Even when …
We consider type IIB flux compactifications on six-dimensional SU(2)-structure manifolds with O5- and O7-planes. These six-dimensional spaces allow not only for F_3 and H_3 fluxes but also for F_1 and F_5 fluxes. We derive the four-dimensional N=1 scalar potential for such compactifications and present one explicit example of a fully stabilized AdS vacuum with large volume and small string coupling. We then discuss cosmological aspects of these compactifications and derive several no-go theorems that forbid dS vacua and slow-roll inflation under certain conditions. We also study concrete examp…
We explore the mechanics of inflation in simplified extra-dimensional models involving an inflaton interacting with the Einstein-Maxwell system in two extra dimensions. The models are Goldilocks-like in that they are just complicated enough to include a mechanism to stabilize the extra-dimensional size, yet simple enough to solve the full 6D field equations using basic tools. The solutions are not limited to the effective 4D regime with H << m_KK (the latter referring to the mass splitting of the Kaluza-Klein excitations) because the full 6D Einstein equations are solved. This allows an explor…
We propose a general scenario for moduli stabilization where low-energy supersymmetry can be accommodated with a high scale of inflation. The key ingredient is that the stabilization of the modulus field during and after inflation is not associated with a single, common scale, but relies on two different mechanisms. We illustrate this general scenario in a simple example, where during inflation the modulus is stabilized with a large mass by a Kahler potential coupling to the field which provides the inflationary vacuum energy via its F-term. After inflation, the modulus is stabilized, for inst…
We propose a new mechanism that adapts to string theory a perturbative method for stabilizing moduli without leaving the domain of perturbative control, thereby evading the `Dine-Seiberg' problem. The only required nonperturbative information comes from the standard renormalization-group resummation of leading logarithms that allow us simultaneously to work to a fixed order in the perturbative parameter $α$ and to all orders in $α\lnτ$ where $τ$ is a large extra-dimensional modulus. The resulting potential is naturally minimized for moduli of order $τ\sim e^{1/α}$ and so can be exponentially l…
We confront the recent proposal of Emerging Brane Inflation with WMAP3+SDSS, finding a scalar spectral index of $n_s=0.9659^{+0.0049}_{-0.0052}$ in excellent agreement with observations. The proposal incorporates a preceding phase of isotropic, non accelerated expansion in all dimensions, providing suitable initial conditions for inflation. Additional observational constraints on the parameters of the model provide an estimate of the string scale. A graceful exit to inflation and stabilization of extra dimensions is achieved via a string gas. The resulting pre-heating phase shows some novel fe…
We solve the Einstein's equation in five-dimensional spacetime for Randall Sundrum Brane world model with time dependent radion field to study variation of brane scale factor with time. We have shown that as radion field decreases with time compactifying the extra dimension, the scale factor increases exponentially with time leading to inflationary scenario. We have also proposed a time dependent generalization of Goldberger-Wise moduli stabilization mechanism to explain the time evolution of the radion field to reach a stable value after which the scale factor on the brane exits from inflatio…
We discuss the inflaton $ϕ$ in an interaction with an infinite number of fields treated as an environment (noise) with a friction $γ^{2}>0$. In a Markovian approximation we obtain a stochastic wave equation (appearing also in the warm inflation models). After the replacement of the environment by the white noise, the stochastic wave equation violates the energy conservation if $γ\neq 0$. We introduce a dark energy as a compensation of the inflaton energy-momentum. We add to the classical wave equation the Starobinsky-Vilenkin noise which in the slow-roll approximation describes the quantum flu…
This brief article reviews a recently proposed scenario of moduli stabilization constructed in the vicinity of a conifold locus in the complex structure moduli space. We discuss typical features of moduli stabilization due to the logarithmic structure of the periods over the Calabi-Yau threefold. Integrating out heavy moduli implies exponential terms in the superpotential very reminiscent of non-perturbative contributions. Ultimately, these terms can lead to an alignment of axions potentially realizing large-field inflation. Our goal is to investigate common issues appearing for moduli stabili…
We study moduli stabilization for type IIB orientifolds compactified on Calabi-Yau threefolds in the region close to conifold singularities in the complex structure moduli space. The form of the periods implies new phenomena like exponential mass hierarchies even in the regime of negligible warping. Integrating out the heavy conic complex structure modulus leads to an effective flux induced potential for the axio-dilaton and the remaining complex structure moduli containing exponentially suppressed terms that imitate non-perturbative effects. It is shown that this scenario can be naturally com…
We construct an inflation model on the Randall-Sundrum I (RSI) brane where a bulk scalar field stabilizes the inter-brane separation. We study impact of the bulk scalar field on the inflationary dynamics on the brane. We proceed in two different approaches: in the first approach, the stabilizing field potential is directly appeared in the Friedmann equation and the resulting scenario is effectively a two-field inflation. In the second approach the stabilization mechanism is considered in the context of a warp factor so that there is just one field present that plays the roles of both inflaton …
We study the consistency of hybrid inflation and moduli stabilization, using the Kallosh--Linde model as an example for the latter. We find that F-term hybrid inflation is not viable since inflationary trajectories are destabilized by tachyonic modes. On the other hand, D-term hybrid inflation is naturally compatible with moduli stabilization due to the absence of a large superpotential term during the inflationary phase. Our model turns out to be equivalent to superconformal D-term inflation and it therefore successfully accounts for the CMB data in the large-field regime. Supersymmetry break…
In this paper we argue that the mechanism of unwinding inflation is naturally present in warped compactifications of type IIB string theory with local throats. The unwinding of flux is caused by its annihilation against branes. The resulting inflaton potential is linear with periodic modulations. We initiate an analysis of the inflationary dynamics and cosmological observables, which are highly constrained by moduli stabilization. For the simplified model of single-Kähler Calabi-Yau spaces we find that many, though not all of the consistency constraints can be satisfied. Particularly, in this …
Recent models of axion monodromy inflation in string theory link the inflationary potential and the moduli stabilization potential. Realistic inflationary models require mechanisms to moderately suppress the inflaton mass with respect to the moduli stabilization scale. In this paper we explore the realization of this idea using warped throats, whose redshifted infrared region supports the inflaton mode. The inflaton potential and its monodromy arise from couplings to the fluxes supporting the throat. We provide explicit realizations of such throats in type IIB with NSNS and RR 3-form field str…
We discuss how cosmic strings can be created in heterotic M-theory compactifications with stable moduli. We conclude that the only appropriate candidates seem to be fundamental open membranes with a small length. In four dimensions they will appear as strings with a small tension. We make an observation that, in the presence of the vector bundle moduli, it might be possible to stabilize a five-brane very close to the visible sector so that a macroscopic open membrane connecting this five-brane and the visible brane will have a sufficiently small length. We also discuss how to embed such cosmic…
We consider gravitational wave production during inflation in type IIB string theory, and the possibility of observable gravitational waves in small field inflation. We show that the gauge field excitations on a set of coincident D7 branes, itself critical for moduli stabilization and hence intrinsic to inflation in string theory, coupled with axion fields from bulk fluxes, can act as a spectator sector during inflation. This results in a large production of chiral gravitational waves, even for relatively small values of the axion-gauge field coupling. We extend this to include a monodromy for…
Tree-level moduli stabilization via geometric and non-geometric fluxes in type IIB orientifolds on Calabi-Yau manifolds is investigated. The focus is on stable non-supersymmetric minima, where all moduli are fixed except for some massless axions. The scenario includes the purely axionic orientifold-odd moduli. A set of vacua allowing for parametric control over the moduli vacuum expectation values and their masses is presented, featuring a specific scaling with the fluxes. Uplift mechanisms and supersymmetry breaking soft masses on MSSM-like D7-branes are discussed as well. This scenario provi…
It is an important question in string compactification whether complex structure moduli stabilization inevitably ends up with a vacuum expectation value of the superpotential < W > of the order of the Planck scale cubed. Any thoughts on volume stabilization and inflation in string theory, as well as on phenomenology of supersymmetric Standard Models, will be affected by the answer to this question. In this work, we follow an idea for making < W > $\simeq$ 0 where the internal manifold has a vacuum complex structure with arithmetic characterization, and address Calabi--Yau fourfold compactifica…
We continue the investigation of F-term axion monodromy inflation in string theory, while seriously taking the issue of moduli stabilization into account. For a number of closed and open string models, we show that they suffer from serious control issues once one is trying to realize trans-Planckian field excursions. More precisely, the flux tuning required to delay the logarithmic scaling of the field distance to a trans-Planckian value cannot be done without leaving the regime where the employed effective supergravity theory is under control. Our findings are consistent with the axionic exte…
We investigate the embedding of brane inflation into stable compactifications of string theory. At first sight a warped compactification geometry seems to produce a naturally flat inflaton potential, evading one well-known difficulty of brane-antibrane scenarios. Careful consideration of the closed string moduli reveals a further obstacle: superpotential stabilization of the compactification volume typically modifies the inflaton potential and renders it too steep for inflation. We discuss the non-generic conditions under which this problem does not arise. We conclude that brane inflation mode…
We study helical phase inflation in supergravity theory in details. The inflation is driven by the phase component of a complex field along helical trajectory. The helicoid structure originates from the monodromy of superpotential with an singularity at origin. We show that such monodromy can be formed by integrating out heavy fields in supersymmetric field theory. The supergravity corrections to the potential provide strong field stabilizations for the scalars except inflaton, therefore the helical phase inflation accomplishes the "monodromy inflation" within supersymmetric field theory. The …
We consider a cosmological scenario within the KKLT framework for moduli stabilization in string theory. The universal open string tachyon of decaying non-BPS D-brane configurations is proposed to drive eternal topological inflation. Flux-induced `warping' can provide the small slow-roll parameters needed for successful inflation. Constraints on the parameter space leading to sufficient number of e-folds, exit from inflation, density perturbations and stabilization of the Kahler modulus are investigated. The conditions are difficult to satisfy in Klebanov-Strassler throats but can be satisfied…
We construct braneworld effective action in two brane Randall-Sundrum model and show that the radion mode plays the role of a scalar field localizing essentially nonlocal part of this action. Non-minimal curvature coupling of this field reflects the violation of AdS/CFT-correspondence for finite values of brane separation. Under small detuning of the brane tension from the Randall-Sundrum flat brane value, the radion mode can play the role of inflaton. Inflationary dynamics corresponds to branes moving apart in the field of repelling interbrane inflaton-radion potential and implies the existen…
We show that the stochastic evolution of an interacting system of the Higgs and a spectator scalar field naturally gives rise to an enhanced probability of settling down at the electroweak vacuum at the end of inflation. Subsequent destabilization due to parametric resonance between the Higgs and the spectator field can be avoided in a wide parameter range. We further argue that the spectator field can play the role of dark matter.
We show how a heavy scalar singlet with a large vacuum expectation value can evade the potential instability of the Standard Model electroweak vacuum. The quartic interaction between the heavy scalar singlet and the Higgs doublet leads to a positive tree-level threshold correction for the Higgs quartic coupling, which is very effective in stabilizing the potential. We provide examples, such as the see-saw, invisible axion and unitarized Higgs inflation, where the proposed mechanism is automatically implemented in well-defined ranges of Higgs masses.
We study a model of accidental inflation in type IIB string theory where inflation occurs near the inflection point of a small Kähler modulus. A racetrack structure helps to alleviate the known concern that string-loop corrections may spoil Kähler Moduli Inflation unless having a significant suppression via the string coupling or a special brane setup. Also, the hierarchy of gauge group ranks required for the separation between moduli stabilization and inflationary dynamics is relaxed. The relaxation becomes more significant when we use the recently proposed D-term generated racetrack model.
We present a detailed analysis of an explicit model of warped D-brane inflation, incorporating the effects of moduli stabilization. We consider the potential for D3-brane motion in a warped conifold background that includes fluxes and holomorphically-embedded D7-branes involved in moduli stabilization. Although the D7-branes significantly modify the inflaton potential, they do not correct the quadratic term in the potential, and hence do not cause a uniform change in the slow-roll parameter eta. Nevertheless, we present a simple example based on the Kuperstein embedding of D7-branes, z_1=const…
We argue that moduli stabilization generically restricts the evolution following transitions between weakly coupled de Sitter vacua and can induce a strong selection bias towards inflationary cosmologies. The energy density of domain walls between vacua typically destabilizes Kahler moduli and triggers a runaway towards large volume. This decompactification phase can collapse the new de Sitter region unless a minimum amount of inflation occurs after the transition. A stable vacuum transition is guaranteed only if the inflationary expansion generates overlapping past light cones for all observa…
The recent progress in embedding inflation in string theory has made it clear that the problem of moduli stabilization cannot be ignored in this context. In many models a special role is played by the volume modulus, which is modified in the presence of mobile branes. The challenge is to stabilize this modified volume while keeping the inflaton mass small compared to the Hubble parameter. It is then crucial to know not only how the volume modulus is modified, but also to have control over the dependence of the potential on the inflaton field. We address these questions within a simple setting:…
A systematic analysis of possibilities for realizing single-field F-term axion monodromy inflation via the flux-induced superpotential in type IIB string theory is performed. In this well-defined setting the conditions arising from moduli stabilization are taken into account, where we focus on the complex-structure moduli but ignore the Kaehler moduli sector. Our analysis leads to a no-go theorem, if the inflaton involves the universal axion. We furthermore construct an explicit example of F-term axion monodromy inflation, in which a single axion-like field is hierarchically lighter than all r…
We provide type IIB string embeddings of two axion variants of natural inflation. We use a combination of RR 2 form axions as the inflaton field and have its potential generated by non perturbative effects in the superpotential. Besides giving rise to inflation, the models developed take into account the stabilization of the compact space, both in the KKLT and large volume scenario regimes, an essential condition for any semi-realistic model of string inflation.
We propose a simple but effective mechanism to realize an inflationary early universe consistent with the observed WMAP, Planck and/or BICEP2 data, which would be incorporated in various supersymmetric models of elementary particles constructed in the (effective) five-dimensional spacetime. In our scenario, the inflaton field is identified with one of the moduli appearing when the fifth direction is compactified, and a successful cosmological inflation without the so-called eta problem can be achieved by a very simple moduli stabilization potential. We also discuss the related particle cosmolo…
