We propose a simple effective model to describe FeAs superconductors. This model is based on the assumption of a local spin-density-wave (SDW) order, with its magnetization direction allowed to fluctuate. It is shown that the long-range order with momentum Q=(π,π) is generally unstable in competing with the kinetic energy of the charge carriers. A true weak SDW order is formed in the undoped case with an additional momentum shift Q_s=(π, 0) due to the peculiar Fermi surface nesting. In the doped case, the unstable long-range order driven by kinetic energy can naturally result in a d-wave superconducting condensation. Such low-energy physics is protected by the presence of the local SDW which sustains some kind of "Mott gags" for the multiband d-electrons near the Fermi energy.
We report a $^{23}$Na and $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) investigation of Na$_{x}$FeAs series ($x=1$, 0.9, 0.8) exhibiting a spin-density wave (SDW) order below $T_{\rm SDW}=45$, 50 and 43 K for $x=1$, 0.9, 0.8, respectively, and a bulk superconductivity below $T_c\approx 12$ K for x=0.9. Below $T_{\rm SDW}$, a spin-lattice relaxation reveals the presence of gapless particle-hole excitations in the whole $x$ range, meaning that a portion of the Fermi surface remains gapless. The superconducting fraction as deduced from the bulk susceptibility scales with this portion, while the SDW…
The recently discovered FeAs-based materials exhibit a $(π,0)$ Spin Density Wave (SDW) in the undoped state, which gives way to superconductivity upon doping. Here we show that due to an interesting topological feature of the band structure, the SDW state cannot acquire a full gap. This is demonstrated within the SDW mean-field theory of both a simplified two band model and a more realistic 5-band model. The positions of the nodes are different in the two models and can be used to detected the validity of each model.
We analyze spin density wave (SDW) order in iron-based superconductors and electronic structure in the SDW phase. We consider an itinerant model for Fe-pnictides with two hole bands centered at $(0,0)$ and two electron bands centered at $(0,π)$ and $(π,0)$ in the unfolded BZ. A SDW order in such a model is generally a combination of two components with momenta $(0,π)$ and $(π,0)$, both yield $(π,π)$ order in the folded zone. Neutron experiments, however, indicate that only one component is present. We show that $(0,π)$ or $(π,0)$ order is selected if we assume that only one hole band is involv…
In the limit of perfect nesting, the physics of iron-pnictides is governed by the density wave formation at the zone-edge vector M. At high energies, various spin- (SDW), charge- (CDW), orbital/pocket- (PDW) density waves, and their linear combinations, all appear equally likely, unified within the unitary order parameter of U(4)XU(4) symmetry. Nesting imperfections and low-energy interactions reduce this symmetry to that of real materials. Nevertheless, the generic ground state preserves a distinct signature of its highly symmetric origins: a SDW along one axis of the iron lattice is predicte…
We report an optical investigation on the in-plane charge dynamics for Na$_{1-δ}$FeAs single crystal. A clear optical evidence for the spin-density wave (SDW) gap is observed. As the structural/magnetic transitions are separated in the Na$_{1-δ}$FeAs case, we find the SDW gap opens in accordance with the magnetic transition. Comparing with the optical response of other FeAs-based parent compounds, both the gap value 2$Δ$ and the energy scale for the gap-induced spectral weight redistribution are smaller in Na$_{1-δ}$FeAs. Our findings support the itinerant origin of the antiferromagnetic trans…
The normal state of the iron arsenides shows the poor metallic behavior mixed with strong magnetic fluctuations. In particular, some FeAs-1111 and FeAs-122 compounds show the linear-T dependence of susceptibility above the spin-density wave (SDW) transition and the logarithmic upturn of resistivity at low temperatures. We suggest that this is due to the spin-flip scattering between the charge carriers and the local moments in the undoped FeAs layer where Kondo effect coexists with the SDW. This scenario is also accounted for the change of the magnetoresistance from positive to negative in the …
We describe the interplay between d-wave superconductivity and spin density wave (SDW) order in a theory of the hole-doped cuprates at hole densities below optimal doping. The theory assumes local SDW order, and associated electron and hole pocket Fermi surfaces of charge carriers in the normal state. We describe quantum and thermal fluctuations in the orientation of the local SDW order, which lead to d-wave superconductivity: we compute the superconducting critical temperature and magnetic field in a `minimal' universal theory. We also describe the back-action of the superconductivity on the …
The interplay between different ordered phases, such as superconducting, charge or spin ordered phases, is of central interest in condensed matter physics. The very recent discovery of superconductivity with a remarkable T$_c$= 26 K in Fe-based oxypnictide La(O$_{1-x}$F$_x$)FeAs is a surprise to the scientific community\cite{Kamihara08}. The pure LaOFeAs itself is not superconducting but shows an anomaly near 150 K in both resistivity and dc magnetic susceptibility. Here we provide combined experimental and theoretical evidences showing that the anomaly is caused by the spin-density-wave (SDW)…
A review of the magnetism in the parent compounds of the iron-based superconductors is given based on the transmission Moessbauer spectroscopy of 57Fe and 151Eu. It was found that the 3d magnetism is of the itinerant character with varying admixture of the spin-polarized covalent bonds. For the 122 compounds a longitudinal spin density wave (SDW) develops. In the case of the EuFe2As2 a divalent europium orders antiferromagnetically at much lower temperature as compared to the onset of SDW. These two magnetic systems remain almost uncoupled one to another. For the non-stoichiometric Fe(1+x)Te p…
The newly discovered superconductor La(O,F)FeAs (Tc = 26 K) was investigated using the neutron scattering technique. No spin-density-wave (SDW) order was observed in the normal state nor in the superconducting state, both with and without an applied magnetic field of 9 T, consistent with the proposal that SDW and superconductivity are competing in the laminar materials. While our inelastic measurements offer no constraints on the spin dynamic response from d-wave pairing, an upper limit for the magnetic resonance peak predicted from an extended s-wave pairing mechanism is provided. Our measure…
To clarify superconductivity in EuFe2As2 hidden by antiferromagnetism of Eu2+, we investigated a Ca-substituted sample, Eu0.5Ca0.5Fe2As2, under high pressure. For ambient pressure, the sample exhibits a spin-density-wave (SDW) transition at TSDW = 191 K and antiferromagnetic order at TN = 4 K, but no evidence of superconductivity down to 2 K. The Ca-substitution certainly weakens the antiferromagnetism. With increasing pressure, TSDW shifts to lower temperature and becomes more unclear. Above 1.27 GPa, pressure-induced superconductivity with zero resistivity is observed at around Tc = 20 K. At…
In high-transition temperature (high-Tc) copper oxides, it is generally believed that antiferromagnetism plays a fundamental role in the superconducting mechanism because superconductivity occurs when mobile electrons or holes are doped into the antiferromagnetic parent compounds. The recent discovery of superconductivity in the rare-earth (R) iron-based oxide systems [RO1-xFxFeAs] has generated enormous interest because these materials are the first noncopper oxide superconductors with Tc exceeding 50 K. The parent (nonsuperconducting) LaOFeAs material is metallic but shows anomalies near 150…
The relation between the spin-density-wave (SDW) and superconducting order is a central topic in current research on the FeAs-based high Tc superconductors. Conflicting results exist in the LaFeAs(O,F)-class of materials, for which whether the SDW and superconductivity are mutually exclusive or they can coexist has not been settled. Here we show that for the (Ba,K)Fe2As2 system, the SDW and superconductivity can coexist in an extended range of compositions. The availability of single crystalline samples and high value of the energy gaps would make the materials a model system to investigate th…
We measured the transport properties and susceptibility of single crystals Ca$_{1-x}$La$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$(x=0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.19 and 0.25). Large in-plane resistivity anisotropy similar to that in Co-doped 122 iron-pnictides is observed although no transition metals were introduced in the FeAs-plane. The in-plane resistivity anisotropy gradually increases with La doping below T$_{SDW}$, being different from the hole-doped 122 superconductors. The susceptibilities of the samples show that La doping leads to suppression of SDW and induces a Curie-Weiss-like behavior at low temperature, which i…
We report the first Nernst effect measurement on the new iron-based superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs $(x=0.1)$. In the normal state, the Nernst signal is negative and very small. Below $T_{c}$ a large positive peak caused by vortex motion is observed. The flux flowing regime is quite large compared to conventional type-II superconductors. However, a clear deviation of the Nernst signal from normal state background and an anomalous depression of off-diagonal thermoelectric current in the normal state between $T_{c}$ and 50 K are observed. We propose that this anomaly in the normal state Ne…
Magnetism in the FeAs stoichiometric compounds and its interplay with superconductivity in vortex states are studied by self-consistently solving the BdG equations based on a two-orbital model with including the on-site interactions between electrons in the two orbitals. It is revealed that for the parent compound, magnetism is caused by the strong Hund's coupling, and the Fermi surface topology aids to select the spin-density-wave (SDW) pattern. The superconducting (SC) order parameter with $s_{\pm}=Δ_{0}\cos(k_{x})\cos(k_{y})$ symmetry is found to be the most favorable pairing for both the e…
We present the c-axis optical reflectance measurement on single crystals of BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and SrFe$_2$As$_2$, the parent compounds of FeAs based superconductors. Different from the ab-plane optical response where two distinct energy gaps were observed in the SDW state, only the smaller energy gap could be seen clearly for \textbf{E}$\parallel$c-axis. The very pronounced energy gap structure seen at a higher energy scale for \textbf{E}$\parallel$ab-plane is almost invisible. We propose a novel picture for the band structure evolution across the SDW transition and suggest different driving mech…
Using angle-integrated photoemission spectroscopy we have probed the novel LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$FeAs superconductor over a wide range of photon energies and temperatures. We have provided the first full characterization of the orbital character of the VB DOS and of the magnitude of the d-p hybridization energy. Finally, we have identified two characteristic temperatures: 90K where a pseudogap-like feature appears to close and 120K where a sudden change in the DOS near E$_F$ occurs. We associate these phenomena with the SDW magnetic ordering and the structural transition seen in the parent compo…
The specific heat $C(T)$ of new iron-based high-$T_c$ superconductor SmO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs ($0 \leq x \leq 0.2$) was systematically studied. For undoped $x$ = 0 sample, a specific heat jump was observed at 130 K. This is attributed to the structural or spin-density-wave (SDW) transition, which also manifests on resistivity as a rapid drop. However, this jump disappears with slight F doping in $x$ = 0.05 sample, although the resistivity drop still exists. The specific heat $C/T$ shows clear anomaly near $T_c$ for $x$ = 0.15 and 0.20 superconducting samples. Such anomaly has been absent in LaO$_{…
The magnetic, transport and optical properties of EuFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals have been investigated parallel and perpendicular to the $ab$-plane. The anisotropy $ρ_c/ρ_{ab}\approx 8$ depends only slightly on temperature. In both orientations, the spin-density wave transition at $T_{\rm SDW}=189$ K shows up as a considerable increase in the dc resistivity. Susceptibility measurements evidence the magnetic order of the Eu$^{2+}$ moments at $T_N=19$ K with little influence on the electronic transport taking place in the FeAs layers. Polarization-dependent infrared spectroscopy reveals strongl…
Resistivity, specific heat and magnetic susceptibility measurements performed on SrFe2As2 samples evidence a behavior very similar to that observed in LaFeAsO and BaFe2As2 with the difference that the formation of the SDW and the lattice deformation occur in a pronounced first order transition at T_0=205K. Comparing further data evidences that the Fe-magnetism is stronger in SrFe2As2 and in EuFe2As2 than in the other layered FeAs systems investigated up to now. Full potential LDA band structure calculations confirm the large similarity between the compounds, especially for the relevant low ene…
We demonstrated experimentally a direct way to probe a hidden propensity to the formation of spin density wave (SDW) in a non-magnetic metal with strong Fermi surface nesting. Substituting Fe for a tiny amount of Cu (1%) induced an incommensurate magnetic order below 20 K in heavily-overdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO). Elastic neutron scattering suggested that this order cannot be ascribed to the localized spins on Cu or doped Fe. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), combined with numerical calculations, revealed a strong Fermi surface nesting inherent in the pristine LSCO that likely …
We performed optical spectroscopy measurement on single crystals of BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and SrFe$_2$As$_2$, the parent compounds of FeAs based superconductors. Both are found to be quite metallic with fairly large plasma frequencies at high temperature. Upon entering the spin-density-wave (SDW) state, formation of partial energy gaps was clearly observed with the presence of surprisingly two different energy scales. A large part of the Drude component was removed by the gapping of Fermi surfaces (FS). Meanwhile, the carrier scattering rate was even more dramatically reduced. We elaborate that the S…
An SDW antiferromagnetic (SDW-AF) low temperature phase transition is generally observe and the AF spin fluctuations are considered to play an important role for the superconductivity paring mechanism in FeAs superconductors. However, a similar magnetic phase transition is not observed in FeSe superconductors, which has caused considerable discussion. We report on the intrinsic electronic states of FeSe as elucidated by transport measurements under magnetic fields using a high quality single crystal. A mobility spectrum analysis, an ab initio method that does not make assumptions on the transp…
We have successfully synthesized the fluo-arsenide SrFeAsF, a new parent phase with the ZrCuAsSi structure. The temperature dependence of resistivity and dc magnetization both reveal an anomaly at about T_{an} = 173 K, which may correspond to the structural and/or Spin-Density-Wave (SDW) transition. Strong Hall effect and magnetoresistance were observed below T_{an}. Interestingly, the Hall coefficient R_H is positive below T_{an}, which is opposite to the cases in the two parent phases of FeAs-based systems known so far, i.e., LnFeAsO (Ln = rare earth elements) and (Ba, Sr)Fe_2As_2 where the …
A new compound with the FeAs-layers, namely (Sr_3Sc_2O_5)Fe_2As_2 (abbreviated as FeAs-32522), was successfully fabricated. It has a layered structure with the space group of I4/mmm, and with the lattice constants a = 4.069 $Å$ and c = 26.876 $Å$. The in-plane Fe ions construct a square lattice which is close to that of other FeAs-based superconductors, such as REFeAsO (RE = rare earth elements) and (Ba,Sr)Fe_2As_2. However the inter FeAs-layer spacing in the new compound is greatly enlarged. The temperature dependence of resistivity exhibits a weak upturn in the low temperature region, but a …
The study of excess conductivity $σ'(T)$ in the textured polycrystalline FeAs-based superconductor $EuFeAsO_{0.85}F_{0.15}$ ($T_c = 11\, K$) prepared by the solid state synthesis is reported. The $σ'(T)$ analysis has been performed within the Local Pair (LP) model based on the assumption of the LP formation in cuprate high-$T_c$ superconductors (cuprates) below the pseudogap (PG) temperature $T^*\gg T_c$. Similarly to the cuprates, near $T_c$ $σ'(T)$ is adequately described by the 3D term of the Aslamasov-Larkin (AL) theory but the range of the 3D-AL fluctuations, $ΔT_{3D}$, is relatively shor…
Magnetic spin fluctuations is one candidate to produce the bosonic modes that mediate the superconductivity in the ferrous superconductors. Up until now, all of the LaOFeAs and BaFe2As2 structure types have simple commensurate magnetic ground states, as result of nesting Fermi surfaces. This type of spin-density-wave (SDW) magnetic order is known to be vulnerable to shifts in the Fermi surface when electronic densities are altered at the superconducting compositions. Superconductivity has more recently been discovered in alpha-Fe(Te,Se), whose electronically active antifluorite planes are isos…
Neutron scattering, with its ability to measure the crystal structure, the magnetic order, and the structural and magnetic excitations, plays an active role in investigating various families of Fe-based high-Tc superconductors. Three different types of antiferromag- netic orders have been discovered in the Fe plane, but two of them cannot be explained by the spin-density-wave (SDW) mechanism of nesting Fermi surfaces. Noticing the close relation between antiferromagnetic order and lattice distortion in orbital ordering from previous studies on manganites and other oxides, we have advocated orb…
