We present a measurement of the forward-backward charge asymmetry ($A_{FB}$) in $p\bar{p} \to Z/γ^{*}+X \to e^+e^-+X$ events at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV using 1.1 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. $A_{FB}$ is measured as a function of the invariant mass of the electron-positron pair, and found to be consistent with the standard model prediction. We use the $A_{FB}$ measurement to extract the effective weak mixing angle $sin^2Theta^{eff}_W = 0.2327 \pm 0.0018 (stat.) \pm 0.0006 (syst.)$.
We present a search for electroweak production of single top quarks in the electron+jets and muon+jets decay channels. The measurements use ~90 pb^-1 of data from Run 1 of the Fermilab Tevatron collider, collected at 1.8 TeV with the DZero detector between 1992 and 1995. We use events that include a tagging muon, implying the presence of a b jet, to set an upper limit at the 95% confidence level on the cross section for the s-channel process ppbar->tb+X of 39 pb. The upper limit for the t-channel process ppbar->tqb+X is 58 pb.
We present measurements of production cross sections of single top quarks in $\ppbar$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96\;\rm TeV$ in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4\;\rm fb^{-1}$ collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We select events with an isolated electron or muon, an imbalance in transverse energy, and two, three, or four jets, with one or two of them containing a bottom hadron. We obtain an inclusive cross section of $σ({\ppbar}{\rargap}tb+X, tqb+X) = 3.43\pm^{0.73}_{0.74}\;\rm pb$ and use it to extract the CKM matrix element $0.79 < |V…
We report on a search for Standard Model t-channel and s-channel single top quark production in ppbar collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV. We use a data sample corresponding to 162 pb^{-1} recorded by the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab. We find no significant evidence for electroweak top quark production and set upper limits at the 95% confidence level on the production cross section, consistent with the Standard Model: 10.1 pb for the t-channel, 13.6 pb for the s-channel and 17.8 pb for the combined cross section of t- and s-channel.
We describe a search for evidence of minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) in 92.7 pb^(-1) of data collected with the DØdetector at the Fermilab Tevatron ppbar collider at center of mass energy of 1.8 TeV. Events with a single electron, four or more jets, and large missing transverse energy were used in this search. The major backgrounds are from W+jets, misidentified multijet, ttbar, and WW production. We observe no excess above the expected number of background events in our data. A new limit in terms of mSUGRA model parameters is obtained.
We present a search for hypothetical vector-like quarks in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The data were collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb^(-1). We select events with a final state composed of a W or Z boson and a jet consistent with a heavy object decay. We observe no significant excess in comparison to the background prediction and set limits on production cross sections for vector-like quarks decaying to W+jet and Z+jet. These are the most stringent mass limits for electroweak single vector-like quark …
We present a search for electroweak production of single top quarks in the s-channel and t-channel using neural networks for signal-background separation. We have analyzed 230 pb$^{-1}$ of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV and find no evidence for a single top quark signal. The resulting 95% confidence level upper limits on the single top quark production cross sections are 6.4 pb in the s-channel and 5.0 pb in the t-channel.
We present measurements of the tWb coupling form factors using information from electroweak single top quark production and from the helicity of W bosons from top quark decays in ttbar events. We set upper limits on anomalous tWb coupling form factors using data collected with the D0 detector at the Tevatron ppbar collider corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb^-1.
We present new direct constraints on a general $Wtb$ interaction using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the D0 detector at the Tevatron $p\bar{p}$ collider. The standard model provides a purely left-handed vector coupling at the $Wtb$ vertex, while the most general, lowest dimension Lagrangian allows right-handed vector and left- or right-handed tensor couplings as well. We obtain precise limits on these anomalous couplings by comparing the data to the expectations from different assumptions on the $Wtb$ coupling.
We search for physics beyond the standard model using events with a photon, two or more hadronic jets, and an apparent imbalance in transverse energy, in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron at $\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV. Such events are predicted for production of supersymmetric particles. No excess is observed beyond expected background. For the parameter space of the minimal supersymmetric standard model with branching fraction $B(\tildeχ^0_2 \to γ\tildeχ^0_1) = 1$ and $m_{\tildeχ^0_2}-m_{\tildeχ^0_1}>20$ GeV, we obtain a 95% confidence level lower limit of 310 GeV for the masses of squar…
We have used a sample of photon+3 jets events collected by the D0 experiment with an integrated luminosity of about 1 fb^-1 to determine the fraction of events with double parton scattering (f_DP) in a single ppbar collision at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV. The DP fraction and effective cross section (sigma_eff), a process-independent scale parameter related to the parton density inside the nucleon, are measured in three intervals of the second (ordered in pT) jet transverse momentum pT_jet2 within the range 15 < pT_jet2 < 30 GeV. In this range, f_DP varies between 0.23 < f_DP < 0.47, while sigma_eff has …
We report the results of a study of color coherence effects in ppbar collisions based on data collected by the D0 detector during the 1994-1995 run of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, at a center of mass energy sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. Initial-to-final state color interference effects are studied by examining particle distribution patterns in events with a W boson and at least one jet. The data are compared to Monte Carlo simulations with different color coherence implementations and to an analytic modified-leading-logarithm perturbative calculation based on the local parton-hadron duality hypothesis…
We present a measurement of direct photon pair production cross sections using 4.2 fb-1 of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton Collider. We measure single differential cross sections as a function of the diphoton mass, the transverse momentum of the diphoton system, the azimuthal angle between the photons, and the polar scattering angle of the photons, as well as the double differential cross sections considering the last three kinematic variables in three diphoton mass bins. The results are compared with different perturbative QCD predictions and eve…
We determine the fraction of events with double parton (DP) scattering in a single ppbar collision at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV in samples of photon + 3 jet and photon + b/c jet + 2 jet events collected with the D0 detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 8.7 fb^{-1}. The DP fractions and effective cross sections (sigma_eff) are measured for both event samples using the same kinematic selections. The measured DP fractions range from 0.21 to 0.17, with effective cross sections in the photon + 3 jet and photon + b/c jet + 2 jet samples of sigma_eff^incl = 12.7 +- 0.2 (stat) +- 1.3 …
We report on a study of color coherence effects in ppbar collisions at a center of mass energy sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV. The data were collected with the D0 detector during the 1992-1993 run of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We observe the presence of initial-to-final state color interference with the spatial correlations between soft and hard jets in multijet events in the central and in forward pseudorapidity regions. The results are compared to Monte Carlo simulations with different color coherence implementations and to the predictions of O(alpha_s^3) QCD calculations.
We present a search for electroweak production of single top quarks in ~90 pb^-1 of data collected with the DZero detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Using arrays of neural networks to separate signals from backgrounds, we set upper limits on the cross sections of 17 pb for the s-channel process ppbar->tb+X, and 22 pb for the t-channel process ppbar->tqb+X, both at the 95% confidence level.
Inclusive dijet production at large pseudorapidity intervals (delta_eta) between the two jets has been suggested as a regime for observing BFKL dynamics. We have measured the dijet cross section for large delta_eta in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1800 and 630 GeV using the DO detector. The partonic cross section increases strongly with the size of delta_eta. The observed growth is even stronger than expected on the basis of BFKL resummation in the leading logarithmic approximation. The growth of the partonic cross section can be accommodated with an effective BFKL intercept of a_{BFKL}(20GeV)=1…
We present a measurement of the cross section for W-boson production in association with jets in pbar-p collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 320 pb^-1 collected with the CDF II detector. W bosons are identified in their electron decay channel and jets are reconstructed using a cone algorithm. For each W+>= n-jet sample (n= 1 - 4) we measure dsigma(ppbar =>W+>=n-jet)/dE_T^(nth-jet) x BR(W => e nu) with respect to the transverse energy E_T of the n^th-highest E_T jet above 20 GeV, and the total cross section sigma(ppbar =>W+…
We have measured the polarizations of $\jpsi$ and $\psiprime$ mesons as functions of their transverse momentum $\pt$ when they are produced promptly in the rapidity range $|y|<0.6$ with $\pt \geq 5 \pgev$. The analysis is performed using a data sample with an integrated luminosity of about $800 \ipb$ collected by the CDF II detector. For both vector mesons, we find that the polarizations become increasingly longitudinal as $\pt$ increases from 5 to $30 \pgev$. These results are compared to the predictions of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics and other contemporary models. The effective po…
The D0 Collaboration presents first evidence for the production of single top quarks at the Fermilab Tevatron ppbar collider. Using a 0.9 fb^-1 dataset, we apply a multivariate analysis to separate signal from background and measure sigma(ppbar->tb+X,tqb+X) = 4.9 +- 1.4 pb. The probability to measure a cross section at this value or higher in the absence of signal is 0.035%, corresponding to a 3.4 standard deviation significance. We use the cross section measurement to directly determine the CKM matrix element that describes the Wtb coupling and find 0.68 < |Vtb| <= 1 at 95% C.L. within the st…
We present a measurement of the forward--backward asymmetry in top quark-antiquark production using the full Tevatron Run II dataset collected by the D0 experiment at Fermilab. The measurement is performed in lepton+jets final states using a new kinematic fitting algorithm for events with four or more jets and a new partial reconstruction algorithm for events with only three jets. Corrected for detector acceptance and resolution effects, the asymmetry is evaluated to be 10.6+-3.0 %. Results are consistent with the standard model predictions which range from 5.0% to 8.8%. We also present the de…
We present results of a search for anomalous production of events containing a charged lepton (either electron or muon) and a photon, both with high transverse momentum, accompanied by additional signatures, X, including missing transverse energy (MET) and additional leptons and photons. We use the same kinematic selection criteria as in a previous CDF search, but with a substantially larger data set, 305 pb-1, a ppbar collision energy of 1.96 TeV, and the upgraded CDF II detector. We find 42 Lepton+Photon+MET events versus a standard model expectation of 37.3 +- 5.4 events. The level of exces…
We present a measurement of the top quark mass ($m_t$) in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV using $t\bar{t}$ events with two leptons ($ee$, $eμ$, or $μμ$) and accompanying jets in $4.3 fb^{-1}$ of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We analyze the kinematically underconstrained dilepton events by integrating over their neutrino rapidity distributions. We reduce the dominant systematic uncertainties from the calibration of jet energy using a correction obtained from $t\bar{t}$ events with a final state of a single lepton plus jets. We also correct…
We present details of a search for electroweak production of single top quarks in the electron+jets and muon+jets decay channels. The measurements use \~90 pb^-1 of data from Run 1 of the Fermilab Tevatron collider, collected at 1.8 TeV with the DZero detector. We use events that include a tagging muon, implying the presence of a b jet, to set an upper limit at the 95% confidence level on the cross section for the s-channel process ppbar->tb+X of 39 pb. The upper limit for the t-channel process ppbar->tqb+X is 58 pb.
We present the first measurement of two-particle momentum correlations in jets produced in $p\bar p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV. Results are obtained for charged particles within a restricted cone with an opening angle of 0.5 radians around the jet axis and for events with dijet masses between 66 and 563 GeV/c$^{2}$. A comparison of the experimental data to theoretical predictions obtained for partons within the framework of resummed perturbative QCD in the next-to-leading log approximation (NLLA) shows that the parton momentum correlations survive the hadronization stage of jet fragmen…
We present a new measurement of the inclusive and differential production cross sections of $J/ψ$ mesons and $b$-hadrons in proton-antiproton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1960$ GeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 39.7 pb$^{-1}$ collected by the CDF Run II detector. We find the integrated cross section for inclusive $J/ψ$ production for all transverse momenta from 0 to 20 GeV/$c$ in the rapidity range $|y|<0.6$ to be $4.08 \pm 0.02 (stat)^{+0.36}_{-0.33} (syst) μ{\rm b}$. We separate the fraction of $J/ψ$ events from the decay of the long-lived $b$-hadrons using the lifetime dist…
We present a model-independent measurement of $t$-channel electroweak production of single top quarks in $\ppbar$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96\;\rm TeV$. Using $5.4\;\rm fb^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, and selecting events containing an isolated electron or muon, missing transverse energy and one or two jets originating from the fragmentation of $b$ quarks, we measure a cross section $σ({\ppbar}{\rargap}tqb+X) = 2.90 \pm 0.59\;\rm (stat+syst)\; pb$ for a top quark mass of $172.5\;\rm GeV$. The probability of the background to fl…
We report on a search for large extra dimensions in a data sample of approximately 1 fb^{-1} of ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. We investigate Kaluza-Klein graviton production with a photon and missing transverse energy in the final state. At the 95% C.L. we set limits on the fundamental mass scale M_{D} from 884 GeV to 778 GeV for two to eight extra dimensions.
The forward-backward charge asymmetry ($A_{FB}$) of $\ppbar \to e^{+}e^{-} X$ is sensitive to the vector and axial-vector couplings of the initial state quarks and final state leptons. Based on the measurement in $72 pb^{-1}$ of CDF Run II data, we measure the coupling constants of the $Z$ boson to quarks and electron. The electroweak mixing angle, $\sin^2θ_{W}$, is also measured through its relation to the coupling constants.
We present new measurements of the single top quark production cross section in \ppbar collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV$ using data corresponding to 5.4 \ifb of integrated luminosity collected by the {\dzero} detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The large mass of the top quark, close to the electroweak symmetry-breaking scale, makes it a good candidate for probing physics beyond the Standard Model, including possible anomalous couplings. We examine the data to study the Lorentz structure of the $Wtb$ coupling, and find that the data prefer the left-handed vector coupling, and set uppe…
We present measurements of the forward-backward asymmetry (A_fb) in dilepton pair decays of Z bosons produced in ppbar collisions using the full Tevatron dataset. The CDF experiment extracts a value for the effective weak mixing angle parameter sin^{2}θ^{l}_{eff} of 0.2315 +/- 0.0010 from the A_fb distribution of dimuon events in 9.2 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity. From dielectron events in 9.7 fb^{-1} of data, the D0 experiment finds sin^{2}θ^{l}_{eff} = 0.23106 +/- 0.00053, the world's most precise measurement of sin^{2}θ^{l}_{eff} from hadron colliders and with light quark couplings.
We report a combination of the CDF and D0 measurements of the inclusive single top quark production cross section in the s- and t-channels in ppbar collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96TeV. The total integrated luminosity included in CDF's analysis is 3.2 fb^-1 and D0's analysis has 2.3 fb^-1. A Bayesian analysis is used to extract the cross section from the distributions of multivariate discriminants provided by the collaborations. For a top quark mass m_t=170 GeV/c^2, we measure a cross section of 2.76 +0.58 -0.47 pb. We extract the CKM matrix element |Vtb|=0.88+-0.07 with a 95% C.L.…
We present the current status of searches for a low mass Standard Model Higgs boson (M_H below ~ 135 GeV/c^2) using data collected from ppbar collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron collider at \sqrt{s}= 1.96 TeV. A summary of the latest results from the CDF and D0 collaborations is reported in this paper, focusing in particular on ongoing efforts to increase overall search sensitivity through improvements to the analysis methods.
We present a measurement of the ratio of events with correlated t and tbar spins to the total number of ttbar events. This ratio f is evaluated using a matrix-element-based approach in events with a single lepton (electron or muon) and at least four jets. We analyze ppbar collisions data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.3 fb^-1 collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider operating at a center of mass energy $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV. Combining this result with a recent measurement of f in dilepton final states, we find f in agreement with the standard model. In add…
We present an analysis of the mass of the X(3872) reconstructed via its decay to J/psi pi+ pi- using 2.4 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity from ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV, collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The possible existence of two nearby mass states is investigated. Within the limits of our experimental resolution the data are consistent with a single state, and having no evidence for two states we set upper limits on the mass difference between two hypothetical states for different assumed ratios of contributions to the observed peak. For equal contrib…
The mass of the top quark M_top is interesting both as a fundamental parameter of the standard model and as an important input to precision electroweak tests. The Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) has a robust program of top quark mass analyses, including the most precise single measurement, M_top = 173.4 +/- 2.8 GeV/c^2, using 680 pb^-1 of ppbar collision data. A combination of current results from CDF gives M_top = 172.0 +/- 2.7 GeV/c^2, surpassing the stated goal of 3 GeV/c^2 precision using 2 fb^-1 of data. Finally, a combination with current D0 results gives a world average top quark ma…
The NuTeV experiment at Fermilab presents a determination of the electroweak mixing angle. High purity, large statistics samples of muon-neutrino and muon-antineutrino events allow the use of the Paschos-Wolfenstein relation, a technique which considerably reduces systematic errors associated with charm production and other sources. Within the Standard Model, this measurement of sin2thw indirectly determines the W boson mass to a precision comparable to direct measurements from high energy e+e- and ppbar colliders. NuTeV measures sin2thw(on-shell)=0.2253+/-0.0019(stat)+/-0.0010(syst), which im…
We present the first exclusive observation of the ttbar to hadronic tau + jets decay channel. Using these events from 1.96 TeV ppbar collisions at CDF, we measure the ttbar cross section as well as the top quark mass. Events require a single hadronic tau, large missing transverse energy, and exactly 4 jets of which at least one must be tagged as a b jet. The cross section measurement is extracted from a Poisson likelihood function based on the observed number of events and the predicted number of signal and background events for a given ttbar cross section. The mass is extracted from a likelih…
The cross section for jets from b quarks produced with a W boson has been measured in ppbar collision data from 1.9/fb of integrated luminosity recorded by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron. The W+b-jets process poses a significant background in measurements of top quark production and prominent searches for the Higgs boson. We measure a b-jet cross section of 2.74 +- 0.27(stat.) +- 0.42(syst.) pb in association with a single flavor of leptonic W boson decay over a limited kinematic phase space. This measured result cannot be accommodated in several available theoretical predictions.
This paper presents the latest measurements of the properties of the top quark as determined by the DZero and CDF collaborations at the Fermilab Tevatron ppbar collider. Both experiments have studied the all-hadronic decay mode of ttbar events. The top quark measurement has been refined over the past year, with the addition of new channels and a re-evaluation of some of the earlier ones. There are recent studies of the mass of the ttbar system, the helicity of the W bosons in the top quark decays, and of the correlation of the spins of the top and antitop quarks. New results are also reported …
We report the observation of electroweak single top quark production in 3.2 fb-1 of ppbar collision data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV. Candidate events in the W+jets topology with a leptonically decaying W boson are classified as signal-like by four parallel analyses based on likelihood functions, matrix elements, neural networks, and boosted decision trees. These results are combined using a super discriminant analysis based on genetically evolved neural networks in order to improve the sensitivity. This combined result is further combined with that of a …
We report an updated measurement of the top quark mass obtained from ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron using the CDF II detector. Our measurement uses a matrix element integration method to obtain a signal likelihood, with a neural network used to identify background events and a likelihood cut applied to reduce the effect of badly reconstructed events. We use a 2.7 fb^-1 sample and observe 422 events passing all of our cuts. We find m_t = 172.2 +/- 1.0 (stat.) +/- 0.9 (JES) +/- 1.0 (syst.) GeV/c^2, or m_t = 172.2 +/- 1.7 (total) GeV/c^2.
We present a novel method for studying the shape of the Z boson transverse momentum distribution, Q_T, at hadron colliders in ppbar/pp -> Z/gamma* -> l^+l^-. The Q_T is decomposed into two orthogonal components; one transverse and the other parallel to the di-lepton thrust axis. We show that the transverse component is almost insensitive to the momentum resolution of the individual leptons and is thus more precisely determined on an event-by-event basis than the Q_T. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a measurement of the distribution of this transverse component is substantially less sensitive …
We report a measurement of the top quark mass using events collected by the CDF II Detector from ppbar collisions at \sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. We calculate a likelihood function for the top mass in events that are consistent with ttbar->bbar l^- \nubar b l^+ νdecays. The likelihood is formed as the convolution of the leading-order matrix element and detector resolution functions. The joint likelihood is the product of likelihoods for each of 33 events collected in 340 pb^{-1} of integrated luminosity, yielding a top quark mass M_t = 165.2 +- 6.1 (stat.) +- 3.4(syst.) GeV/c^…
We report a search for effects of large extra spatial dimensions in ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV with the DZero detector, using events containing a pair of electrons or photons. The data are in good agreement with the expected background and do not exhibit evidence for large extra dimensions. We set the most restrictive lower limits to date, at the 95% confidence level, on the effective Planck scale between 1.0 TeV and 1.4 TeV for several formalisms and numbers of extra dimensions.
We review the most recent measurements of the top quark mass using data collected by the CDF experiment at the Tevatron 1.96 TeV ppbar collider. The mass measurements are performed in all main decay modes of the produced ttbar pairs using integrated luminosities up to 2fb-1. In most channels the total uncertainty is dominated by systematic effects, most of which are currently being revised. The precise measurement of the top quark mass is one of the Tevatron's main and long lasting legacies. Besides serving as a benchmark measurement at the LHC collider, it will serve as a consistency check of…
We present a measurement of the semileptonic mixing asymmetry for B0 mesons, a^d_{sl}, using two independent decay channels: B0 -> mu+D-X, with D- -> K+pi-pi-; and B0 -> mu+D*-X, with D*- -> antiD0 pi-, antiD0 -> K+pi- (and charge conjugate processes). We use a data sample corresponding to 10.4 fb^{-1} of ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV, collected with the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We extract the charge asymmetries in these two channels as a function of the visible proper decay length (VPDL) of the B0 meson, correct for detector-related asymmetries using data-driv…
A precision measurement of the top quark mass m_t is obtained using a sample of ttbar events from ppbar collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron with the CDF II detector. Selected events require an electron or muon, large missing transverse energy, and exactly four high-energy jets, at least one of which is tagged as coming from a b quark. A likelihood is calculated using a matrix element method with quasi-Monte Carlo integration taking into account finite detector resolution and jet mass effects. The event likelihood is a function of m_t and a parameter DJES to calibrate the jet energy scale /in s…
Selected quantum chromodynamics (QCD) measurements performed at the Fermilab Run II Tevatron ppbar collider running at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV by CDF and D0 Collaborations are presented. The inclusive jet, dijet production and three-jet cross section measurements are used to test perturbative QCD calculations, constrain parton distribution function (PDF) determinations, and extract a precise value of the strong coupling constant, alpha_s(m_Z) = 0.1161^{+0.0041}_{-0.0048}. Inclusive photon production cross-section measurements reveal an inability of next-to-leading-order (NLO) perturbative QCD (pQCD…
We report a measurement of the top quark mass, m_t, obtained from ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron using the CDF II detector. We analyze a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.9 fb^-1. We select events with an electron or muon, large missing transverse energy, and exactly four high-energy jets in the central region of the detector, at least one of which is tagged as coming from a b quark. We calculate a signal likelihood using a matrix element integration method, with effective propagators to take into account assumptions on event kinematics. Our…
We consider the production of W bosons in hadron collisions, and the subsequent leptonic decay W->lnu_l. We study the asymmetry between the rapidity distributions of the charged leptons, and we present its computation up to the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD perturbation theory. Our calculation includes the dependence on the lepton kinematical cuts that are necessarily applied to select W-> lnu_l events in actual experimental analyses at hadron colliders. We illustrate the main differences between the W and lepton charge asymmetry, and we discuss their physical origin and the effe…
