We have performed an investigation of the nonlinear magnetic response in ruthenocuprates. A negative, diverging-like peak at the main magnetic transition T_N in RuSr2RECu2O8 (RE = Gd, Y) indicates a possible canted antiferromagnetic order. Another well defined feature above T_N points to a blocking of superparamagnetic particles through the T^(-3) dependence of the third harmonic at higher temperatures. Below T_N a nondiverging peak appears, which is strongly affected by the addition of 10% of Cu ions in the RuO2 planes. In RuSr2RE(2-x)Ce(x)Cu2O10 the main magnetic transition T_M is accompanied by two characteristic temperatures in the third harmonic of the ac susceptibility, in agreement with recent studies from uSR and Mossbauer spectroscopy. We find that the spin-spin correlation temperature is the same in both families of ruthenocuprates.
Nonlinear responses give rise to various exciting phenomena, which are forbidden in linear responses. Among them, one of the most fascinating phenomena is the recently observed giant spontaneous Hall effect in $\mathrm{Ce_{3}Bi_{4}Pd_{3}}$. This material is a promising candidate for a Weyl-Kondo semimetal, and this experiment implies that strong correlation effects can enhance the nonlinear Hall effect. However, most theoretical studies on nonlinear responses have been limited to free systems, and the connection between nonlinear responses and strong correlation effects is poorly understood. M…
Nonlinear responses in condensed matter are intensively studied because they provide rich information about materials and hold the possibility of being applied in diodes or high-frequency optical devices. While nonlinear responses in noninteracting models have been explored widely, the effect of strong correlations on the nonlinear response is still poorly understood, even though it has been suggested that correlations can enhance the nonlinear response. In this work, we first give an analytical derivation of nonlinear responses using the Green's function methods at finite temperature. Then, w…
Recently, nonlinear responses have been actively studied in both experiments and theory. Particularly interesting are inversion-symmetry broken systems, where an even-order nonlinear electrical conductivity can be nonzero, resulting in nonreciprocity. Second-order nonlinear conductivities attract much attention because of their sensitivity to detect inversion-symmetry breaking in materials and their functionalities. However, while the nonlinear response has been actively studied in noninteracting systems for a long time, the nonlinear response in strongly correlated materials is still poorly u…
Shift current and second harmonic generation (SHG) are nonlinear optical responses that are often used for photovoltaic effect and the detection of subtle symmetry breaking patterns in materials. It has been recently shown that topological semimetals such as Weyl semimetals with broken inversion symmetry can generate large nonlinear optical responses. In this paper, we investigate both shift current and SHG in a class of topological nodal line semimetal (NLSM) systems with broken inversion symmetry, which may arise intrinsically or via an applied electric field. It is shown that certain classe…
We propose a systematic analysis method for identifying essential parameters in various linear and nonlinear response tensors without which they vanish. By using the Keldysh formalism and the Chebyshev polynomial expansion method, the response tensors are decomposed into the model-independent and dependent parts, in which the latter is utilized to extract the essential parameters. An application of the method is demonstrated by analyzing the nonlinear Hall effect in the ferroelectric SnTe monolayer for example. It is shown that in this example the second-neighbor hopping is essential for the n…
We present the theory of nonlinear ac magnetic response for the highly nonlinear regime of the chiral soliton lattice. Increasing of the dc magnetic field perpendicularly to the chiral axis results in crossover inside the phase, when nearly isolated $2π$-kinks are partitioned by vast ferromagnetic domains. Assuming that each of the kink reacts independently from the other ones to the external ac field, we demonstrate that internal deformations of such a kink give rise to the nonlinear response.
In this work, we calculate the optical response and the nonlinear Hall response of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) in the insulating states. Different insulating states, including spin-valley polarized (SPVP) state, spin-polarized quantum Hall(SPQH) state, spin-polarized valley Hall (SPVH) state, and spin polarized Kramers-intervalley coherence (SPKIVC) state, are considered. We calculate the optical conductivity ($σ_{xx}$) of these four states and we find that the spin-valley polarized state shows a two-peak feature which is different from the other three states. In order to distinguish the ot…
Warm dense matter (WDM)---an extreme state with high temperatures and densities that occurs e.g. in astrophysical objects---constitutes one of the most active fields in plasma physics and materials science. These conditions can be realized in the lab by shock compression or laser excitation, and the most accurate experimental diagnostics is achieved with lasers and free electron lasers which is theoretically modeled using linear response theory. Here, we present first \textit{ab initio} path integral Monte Carlo results for the nonlinear density response of correlated electrons in WDM and show…
Topological insulators (TIs) in three space dimensions can be characterized by a quantized magnetoelectric coefficient. However, this coupling does not have experimentally observable consequences in the presence of time-reversal symmetry, because the contributions of both bulk and surface states cancel each other. Instead, the characteristic response of a TI is a nonlinear magnetoelectric effect. Field theoretic aspects of the nonlinear magnetoelectric response and numerical calculations for experimentally relevant geometries are discussed. Distinct from this effect, the magnetoelectric coupli…
Nonlinear optical responses are often used as a probe for studying electronic properties of materials. For topological materials, studies so far focused on the photogalvanic electric current, which requires breaking inversion symmetry. In this work we present a theory of orbital current response in inversion-symmetric topological insulators. We find a symmetry-allowed orbital current response that occurs in centrosymmetric materials under illumination by linearly polarized light. The sign of the dc nonlinear conductivity reflects the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ index and the conductivity changes sign at th…
Focusing on the twist angle for the minimal commensurate structure, we perform nonperturbative calculations of electron dynamics in the twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) under intense laser fields. We show that the TBG exhibits enriched high-harmonic generation that cannot occur in monolayer or conventional bilayers. We elucidate the mechanism of these nonlinear responses by analyzing dynamical symmetries, momentum-resolved dynamics, and roles of interlayer coupling. Our results imply nonlinear "optotwistronics," or controlling optical properties of layered materials by artificial twists.
