Depolarizing maps acting on an N dimensional system are completely positive maps resulting into compression of the Bloch ball along the different polarization directions. In the qubit case these maps are a convex sum of four extremal maps and form a simplex in the space of compression coefficients along the three polarization directions. We calculate the compression domain for three and four level systems. For a three level system the region has curved surfaces, but it is a simplex for a four level system. We conjecture that it is a simplex in the case of 2^n level systems.
It is proved that every doubly stochastic quantum channel that is properly averaged with the completely depolarizing channel can be written as a convex combination of unitary channels. As a consequence, we find that the collection of channels expressible as convex combinations of unitary channels has non-zero Borel measure within the space of doubly stochastic channels.
In this paper we use the method of a recent paper (quant-ph/0509101) to compute complementary channels for certain important cases, such as depolarizing and transpose-depolarizing channels. This method allows us to easily obtain the minimal Kraus representations from non--minimal ones. We also study the properties of the output purity of the tensor product of a channel and its complement.
The archetypal one-qubit noisy channels ---depolarizing, phase-damping and amplitude-damping channels--- describe both Markovian and non-Markovian evolution. Simple microscopic models for the depolarizing channel, both classical and quantum, are considered. Microscopic models which describe phase damping and amplitude damping channels are briefly reviewed.
We report experimental studies on the effect of the depolarizing quantum channel on weak-pulse BB84 and SARG04 quantum cryptography. The experimental results show that, in real world conditions in which channel depolarization cannot be ignored, BB84 should perform better than SARG04.
Additivity of the minimal output entropy for the family of transpose depolarizing channels introduced by Fannes et al. [quant-ph/0410195] is considered. It is shown that using the method of our previous paper [quant-ph/0403072] allows us to prove the additivity for the range of the parameter values for which the problem was left open in [quant-ph/0410195]. Together with the result of [quant-ph/0410195], this covers the whole family of transpose depolarizing channels.
We consider bistochastic quantum channels generated by unitary representations of the discret group. The proof of the additivity conjecture for the quantum depolarizing channel $Φ$ based on the decreasing property of the relative entropy is given. We show that the additivity conjecture is true for the channel $Ξ=Ψ\circ Φ$, where $Ψ$ is the phase damping.
The qubit depolarizing channel with noise parameter $η$ transmits an input qubit perfectly with probability $1-η$, and outputs the completely mixed state with probability $η$. We show that its complementary channel has positive quantum capacity for all $η>0$. Thus, we find that there exists a single parameter family of channels having the peculiar property of having positive quantum capacity even when the outputs of these channels approach a fixed state independent of the input. Comparisons with other related channels, and implications on the difficulty of studying the quantum capacity of the …

The disturbance effect of a depolarizing channel on the security of the quantum key distribution of the four state BB84 protocol with multiple sequentiel intercept and resend attacks of many eavesdroppers, has been studied. The quantum bit error rate and the mutual information are computed for arbitray number of attacks.
We show that standard teleportation with an arbitrary mixed state resource is equivalent to a generalized depolarizing channel with probabilities given by the maximally entangled components of the resource. This enables the usage of any quantum channel as a generalized depolarizing channel without additional twirling operations. It also provides a nontrivial upper bound on the entanglement of a class of mixed states. Our result allows a consistent and statistically motivated quantification of teleportation success in terms of the relative entropy and this quantification can be related to a cla…
For the quantum depolarizing channel with any finite dimension, we compare three schemes for channel identification: unentangled probes, probes maximally entangled with an external ancilla, and maximally entangled probe pairs. This comparison includes cases where the ancilla is itself depolarizing and where the probe is circulated back through the channel before measurement. Compared on the basis of (quantum Fisher) information gained per channel use, we find broadly that entanglement with an ancilla dominates the other two schemes, but only if entanglement is cheap relative to the cost per ch…
We study the classical capacity of a forgetful quantum memory channel that switches between two qubit depolarizing channels according to an ergodic Markov chain. The capacity of this quantum memory channel depends on the parameters of the two depolarizing channels and the memory of the ergodic Markov chain. When the number of input qubit's is two, we show that depending on channel parameters either the maximally entangled input states or product input states achieve the classical capacity. Our conjecture based on numerics is that as the number of input qubits are increased the classical capaci…
We experimentally demonstrate the achievement of the entanglement assisted capacity for classical information transmission over a depolarizing channel. The implementation is based on the generation and local manipulation of 2-qubit Bell states, which are finally measured at the receiver by a complete Bell state analysis. The depolarizing channel is realized by introducing quantum noise in a controlled way on one of the two qubits. This work demonstrates the achievement of the maximum allowed amount of information that can be shared in the presence of noise and the highest reported value in the…
We investigate strategies for estimating a depolarizing channel for a finite dimensional system. Our analysis addresses the double optimization problem of selecting the best input probe state and the measurement strategy that minimizes the Bayes cost of a quadratic function. In the qubit case, we derive the Bayes optimal strategy for any finite number of input probe particles when bipartite entanglement can be formed in the probe particles.
The classical product state capacity of a noisy quantum channel with memory is investigated. A forgetful noise-memory channel is constructed by Markov switching between two depolarizing channels which introduces non-Markovian noise correlations between successive channel uses. The computation of the capacity is reduced to an entropy computation for a function of a Markov process. A reformulation in terms of algebraic measures then enables its calculation. The effects of the hidden-Markovian memory on the capacity are explored. An increase in noise-correlations is found to increase the capacity…
The information carrying capacity of the d-dimensional depolarizing channel is computed. It is shown that this capacity can be achieved by encoding messages as products of pure states belonging to an orthonormal basis of the state space, and using measurements which are products of projections onto this same orthonormal basis. In other words, neither entangled signal states nor entangled measurements give any advantage for information capacity. The result follows from an additivity theorem for the capacity of the product of the depolarizing channel with an arbitrary channel. We establish the A…
We show that the stability theorem of the depolarizing channel holds for the output quantum $p$-Rényi entropy for $p \ge 2$ or $p=1$, which is an extension of the well known case $p=2$. As an application, we present a protocol in which Bob determines whether Alice prepares a pure quantum state close to a product state. In the protocol, Alice transmits to Bob multiple copies of a pure state through a depolarizing channel, and Bob estimates its output quantum $p$-Rényi entropy. By using our stability theorem, we show that Bob can determine whether her preparation is appropriate.
A generalized depolarizing channel acts on an N-dimensional quantum system to compress the ``Bloch ball'' in N^2-1 directions; it has a corresponding compression vector. We investigate the geometry of these compression vectors and prove a conjecture of Dixit and Sudarshan [1], namely that when N=2^d (i.e. the system consists of d qubits) and we work in the Pauli basis then the set of all compression vectors forms a simplex. We extend this result by investigating the geometry in other bases; in particular we find precisely when the set of all compression vectors forms a simplex.
We consider estimating the parameter associated with the qubit depolarizing channel when the available initial states that might be employed are mixed. We use quantum Fisher information as a measure of the accuracy of estimation to compare protocols which use collections of qubits in product states to one in which the qubits are in a correlated state. We show that, for certain parameter values and initial states, the correlated state protocol can yield a greater accuracy per channel invocation than the product state protocols. We show that, for some parameters and initial states, using more th…
We discuss the structure of decoherence-free subsystems for a bosonic channel affected by collective depolarization. A single use of the channel is defined as a transmission of a pair of bosonic modes. Collective depolarization consists in a random linear U(2) transformation of the respective mode operators, which is assumed to be identical for $N$ consecutive uses of the channel. We derive a recursion formula that characterizes the dimensionality of available decoherence-free subsystems in such a setting.
The hypercontractivity inequality for the qubit depolarizing channel $Ψ_t$ states that $\|Ψ_t^{\otimes n}(X)\|_p\leq \|X\|_q$ provided that $p\geq q> 1$ and $t\geq \ln \sqrt{\frac{p-1}{q-1}}$. In this paper we present an improvement of this inequality. We first prove an improved quantum logarithmic-Sobolev inequality and then use the well-known equivalence of logarithmic-Sobolev inequalities and hypercontractivity inequalities to obtain our main result. As applications of these results, we present an asymptotically tight quantum Faber-Krahn inequality on the hypercube, and a new quantum Schwar…
If two identical copies of a completely depolarizing channel are put into a superposition of their possible causal orders, they can transmit non-zero classical information. Here, we study how well we can transmit classical information with $N$ depolarizing channels put in superposition of $M$ causal orders via quantum SWITCH. We calculate Holevo quantity if the superposition uses only cyclic permutations of channels and find that it increases with $M$ and it is independent of $N$. For a qubit it never reaches $1$ if we are increasing $M$. On the other hand, the classical capacity decreases wit…
A new bound for the quantum capacity of the $d$-dimensional depolarizing channels is presented. Our derivation makes use of a flagged extension of the map where the receiver obtains a copy of a state $σ_0$ whenever the messages are transmitted without errors, and a copy of a state $σ_1$ when instead the original state gets fully depolarized. By varying the overlap between the flags states, the resulting transformation nicely interpolates between the depolarizing map (when $σ_0=σ_1$), and the $d$-dimensional erasure channel (when $σ_0$ and $σ_1$ have orthogonal support). In our analysis we comp…
Given a quantum channel $Φ$ in a Hilbert space $H$ put $\hat H_Φ(ρ)=\min \limits_{ρ_{av}=ρ}Σ_{j=1}^{k}π_{j}S(Φ(ρ_{j}))$, where $ρ_{av}=Σ_{j=1}^{k}π_{j}ρ_{j}$, the minimum is taken over all probability distributions $π=\{π_{j}\}$ and states $ρ_{j}$ in $H$, $S(ρ)=-Trρ\logρ$ is the von Neumann entropy of a state $ρ$. The strong superadditivity conjecture states that $\hat H_{Φ\otimes Ψ}(ρ)\ge \hat H_Φ(Tr_{K}(ρ))+\hat H_Ψ(Tr_{H}(ρ))$ for two channels $Φ$ and $Ψ$ in Hilbert spaces $H$ and $K$, respectively. We have proved the strong superadditivity conjecture for the quantum depolarizing channel in…
In this article the effect of noise on Grover's algorithm is analyzed, modeled as a total depolarizing channel (TDCh) and a local depolarizing channel in each qubit (LDCh). The focus was not in error correction (e.g. by the fault-tolerant method), but to provide an insight to the kind of error, or degradation, that needs to be corrected. In the last years analytical results regarding mainly the TDCh model have been obtained. In this paper we extend these previous results to the local case, concluding that the degradation of Grover's algorithm with the latter is worse than the former. It has be…
Microscopic Hamiltonian models of the composite system "open system + environment" typically do not provide the operator-sum Kraus form of the open system's dynamical map. With the use of a recently de- veloped method [16], we derive the Kraus operators starting from the mi- croscopic Hamiltonian model, i.e. from the proper master equation, of the one-qubit depolarizing channel. Those Kraus operators generalize the stan- dard counterparts, which are widely used in the literature. Comparison of the standard and the here obtained Kraus operators is performed via inves- tigating dynamical change …
Despite its widespread use in fiber optics, encoding quantum information in photonic time-bin states is usually considered impractical for free-space quantum communication as turbulence-induced spatial distortion impedes the analysis of time-bin states at the receiver. Here, we demonstrate quantum key distribution using time-bin photonic states distorted by turbulence and depolarization during free-space transmission. Utilizing a novel analyzer apparatus, we observe stable quantum bit error ratios of 5.32 %, suitable for generating secure keys, despite significant wavefront distortions and pol…

Depolarization is one of the most important sources of error in a quantum communication link that can be introduced by the quantum channel. Even though standard quantum process tomography can, in theory, be applied to characterize this effect, in most real-world implementations depolarization cannot be distinguished from time-varying unitary transformations, especially when the time scales are much shorter than the detectors response time. In this paper, we introduce a method for distinguishing true depolarization from fast polarization rotations by employing Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. It is…
We investigate the classical capacity of two quantum channels with memory: a periodic channel with depolarizing channel branches, and a convex combination of depolarizing channels. We prove that the capacity is additive in both cases. As a result, the channel capacity is achieved without the use of entangled input states. In the case of a convex combination of depolarizing channels the proof provided can be extended to other quantum channels whose classical capacity has been proved to be additive in the memoryless case.
Quantum Surface codes are a kind of quantum topological stabilizer codes whose stabilizers and qubits are geometrically related. Due to their special structures, surface codes have great potential to lead people to large-scale quantum computation. In the minimum weight perfect matching (MWPM) decoding of surface codes, the bit-flip errors and phase-flip errors are assumed to be independent for simplicity. However, these two kinds of errors are likely to be correlated in the real world. In this paper, we propose a modification to MWPM decoding for surface codes to deal with the noises in depola…
Effect of quantum decoherence in a three-player quantum Kolkata restaurant problem is investigated using tripartite entangled qutrit states. Amplitude damping, depolarizing, phase damping, trit-phase flip and phase flip channels are considered to analyze the behaviour of players payoffs. It is seen that Alice's payoff is heavily influenced by the amplitude damping channel as compared to the depolarizing and flipping channels. However, for higher level of decoherence, Alice's payoff is strongly affected by depolarizing noise. Whereas the behaviour of phase damping channel is symmetrical around …
The maximal evolution speed of a quantum system can be represented by quantum speed limit time (QSLT).We investigate QSLT of a two-qubit system passing through a correlated channel (amplitude damping, phase damping, and depolarizing).By adjusting the correlation parameter of channel and the initial entanglement,a method to accelerate the evolution speed of the system for some specific channels is proposed. It is shown that, in amplitude damping channel and depolarizing channel,QSLT may be shortened in some cases by increasing correlation parameter of the channel and initial entanglement, which …
We employed an electrically-driven polarization controller to implement anisotropic depolarizing quantum channels for the polarization state of single photons. The channels were characterized by means of ancilla-assisted quantum process tomography using polarization-entangled photons generated in the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The demonstrated depolarization method offers good repeatability, low cost, and compatibility with fiber-optic setups. It does not perturb the modal structure of single photons, and therefore can be used to verify experimentally protocols for mana…
For a two-qubit system under local depolarizing channels, the most robust and most fragile states are derived for a given concurrence or negativity. For the one-sided channel, the pure states are proved to be the most robust ones, with the aid of the evolution equation for entanglement given by Konrad et al. [Nat. Phys. 4, 99 (2008)]. Based on a generalization of the evolution equation for entanglement, we classify the ansatz states in our investigation by the amount of robustness, and consequently derive the most fragile states. For the two-sided channel, the pure states are the most robust f…
The paper analyzes the behavior of quantum channels, particularly in large dimensions, by proving various properties of the quantum gate fidelity. Many of these properties are of independent interest in the theory of distance measures on quantum operations. A non-uniqueness result for the gate fidelity is proven, a consequence of which is the existence of non-depolarizing channels that produce a constant gate fidelity on pure states. Asymptotically, the gate fidelity associated with any quantum channel is shown to converge to that of a depolarizing channel. Methods for estimating the minimum o…
We study the effect of decoherence on quantum Monty Hall problem under the influence of amplitude damping, depolarizing and dephasing channels. It is shown that under the effect of decoherence, there is a Nash equilibrium of the game in case of depolarizing channel for Alice's quantum strategy. Where as in case of dephasing noise, the game is not influenced by the quantum channel. For amplitude damping channel, the Bob's payoffs are found symmetrical with maximum at p=0.5 against his classical strategy. However, it is worth-mentioning that in case of depolarizing channel, Bob's classical strat…
We introduce a method to construct non-Markovian variants of completely positive (CP) dynamical maps, particularly, qubit Pauli channels. We identify non-Markovianity with the breakdown in CP-divisibility of the map, i.e., appearance of a not-completely-positive (NCP) intermediate map. In particular, we consider the case of non-Markovian dephasing in detail. The eigenvalues of the Choi matrix of the intermediate map crossover at a point which corresponds to a singularity in the canonical decoherence rate of the corresponding master equation, and thus to a momentary non-invertibility of the map…
We study the dynamics of coherence-induced state ordering under incoherent channels, particularly four specific Markovian channels: $-$ amplitude damping channel, phase damping channel, depolarizing channel and bit flit channel for single-qubit states. We show that the amplitude damping channel, phase damping channel, and depolarizing channel do not change the coherence-induced state ordering by $l_1$ norm of coherence, relative entropy of coherence, geometric measure of coherence, and Tsallis relative $α$-entropies, while the bit flit channel does change for some special cases.
We study the convergence of states under continuous-time depolarizing channels with full rank fixed points in terms of the relative entropy. The optimal exponent of an upper bound on the relative entropy in this case is given by the log-Sobolev-1 constant. Our main result is the computation of this constant. As an application we use the log-Sobolev-1 constant of the depolarizing channels to improve the concavity inequality of the von-Neumann entropy. This result is compared to similar bounds obtained recently by Kim et al. and we show a version of Pinsker's inequality, which is optimal and tig…
We have examined the effect of the decoherence in the Ekert91 quantum cryptographic protocol. In order to explore this issue we have introduced two major decoherences, the depolarizing channel and the generalized amplitude damping, between the singlet source and one of the legitimate users. It is shown that the depolarizing channel disentangles the quantum channel more easily than the generalized amplitude damping. This fact indicates that the Ekert protocol is more robust to the generalized amplitude damping. We also have computed the Bell inequality to check the robustness or weakness of the…
Motivated by the results of C. Macchiavello and G. M. Palma on entanglement-enhanced information transmission over a quantum channel with correlated noise, we demonstrate how the entanglement teleportation scheme of J. Lee and M. S. Kim gives rise to two uncorrelated generalized depolarizing channels. In an attempt to find a teleportation scheme which yields two correlated generalized depolarizing channels, we discover a novel teleportation scheme, which allows one to learn about the entanglement in an entangled pure input state, but without decreasing the amount of entanglement associated wit…
We introduce a 3-parameter class of maps acting on a bipartite system that are a natural generalisation of the depolarizing channel (and include it as a special case). Then, we find the exact regions of the parameter space that alternatively determine a positive, completely positive, entanglement-breaking or entanglement-annihilating map. This model displays a much richer behaviour than the one shown by a simple depolarizing channel, yet it stays exactly solvable. As an example of this richness, PPT but not entanglement-breaking maps are found. A simple example of a positive yet indecomposable…
We investigate the Weyl channels being covariant with respect to the maximum commutative group of unitary operators. This class includes the quantum depolarizing channel and the "two-Pauli" channel as well. Then, we show that our estimation of the output entropy for a tensor product of the phase damping channel and the identity channel based upon the decreasing property of the relative entropy allows to prove the additivity conjecture for the minimal output entropy for the quantum depolarizing channel in any prime dimesnsion and for the "two Pauli" channel in the qubit case.
Using the axiomatic definition of the coherence measure, such as the $l_{1}$ norm and the relative entropy, we study the phenomena of two-qubit system quantum coherence through quantum channels where successive uses of the channels are memory. Different types of noisy channels with memory, such as amplitude damping, phase-damping, and depolarizing channels effect on quantum coherence have been discussed in detail. The results show that, quantum channels with memory can efficiently protect coherence from noisy channels. Particularly, as channels with perfect memory, quantum coherence is unaffec…
We study the influence of entanglement and correlated noise using correlated amplitude damping, depolarizing and phase damping channels on the quantum Stackelberg duopoly. Our investigations show that under the action of amplitude damping channel a critical point exists for unentangled initial state as well, at which firms get equal payoffs. The game becomes a follower advantage game when the channel is highly decohered. Two critical points corresponding to two values of the entanglement angle are found in the presence of correlated noise. Within the range of these limits of entanglement angle…
Evaluating the quantum capacity of quantum channels is an important but difficult problem, even for channels of low input and output dimension. Smith and Smolin showed that the quantum capacity of the Clifford-twirl of a qubit amplitude damping channel (a qubit depolarizing channel) has a quantum capacity that is at most the coherent information of the qubit amplitude damping channel evaluated on the maximally mixed input state. We restrict our attention to obtaining upper bounds on the quantum capacity using a generalization of Smith and Smolin's degradable extension technique. Given a degrad…
We develop reverse versions of hypercontractive inequalities for quantum channels. By generalizing classical techniques, we prove a reverse hypercontractive inequality for tensor products of qubit depolarizing channels. We apply this to obtain a rapid mixing result for depolarizing noise applied to large subspaces, and to prove bounds on a quantum generalization of non-interactive correlation distillation.
We explore the conceptual usefulness of Riemannian geometric tools induced by the statistical concept of distinguishability in quantifying the effect of a depolarizing channel on quantum states. Specifically, we compare the geometries of the interior of undeformed and deformed Bloch spheres related to density operators on a two-dimensional Hilbert space. We show that randomization emerges geometrically through a smaller infinitesimal quantum line element on the deformed Bloch sphere while the uniform contraction manifests itself via a deformed set of geodesics where the spacial components of t…
