In this paper we systematically study various properties of the distance graph in ${\Bbb F}_q^d$, the $d$-dimensional vector space over the finite field ${\Bbb F}_q$ with $q$ elements. In the process we compute the diameter of distance graphs and show that sufficiently large subsets of $d$-dimensional vector spaces over finite fields contain every possible finite configurations.
In this paper we study the kaleidoscopic pseudo-randomness of finite Euclidean graphs using probabilistic methods. Roughly speaking, we show that sufficiently large subsets of d-dimensional vector spaces over finite fields contain every possible finite configurations.
We prove that the intersection hypergraph of a family of $n$ pseudo-disks with respect to another family of pseudo-disks admits a proper coloring with $4$ colors and a conflict-free coloring with $O(\log n)$ colors. Along the way we prove that the respective Delaunay-graph is planar. We also prove that the intersection hypergraph of a family of $n$ regions with linear union complexity with respect to a family of pseudo-disks admits a proper coloring with constantly many colors and a conflict-free coloring with $O(\log n)$ colors. Our results serve as a common generalization and strengthening o…
What is the minimum number of colors that always suffice to color every planar set of points such that any disk that contains enough points contains two points of different colors? It is known that the answer to this question is either three or four. We show that three colors always suffice if the condition must be satisfied only by disks that contain a fixed point. Our result also holds, and is even tight, when instead of disks we consider their topological generalization, namely pseudo-disks, with a non-empty intersection. Our solution uses the equivalence that a hypergraph can be realized b…
A complete $k$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a (not necessarily proper) $k$-coloring of the vertices of $G$, such that each pair of different colors appears in an edge. A complete $k$-coloring is also called connected, if each color class induces a connected subgraph of $G$. The pseudoachromatic index of a graph $G$, denoted by $ψ'(G)$, is the largest $k$ for which the line graph of $G$ has a complete $k$-coloring. Analogously the connected-pseudoachromatic index of $G$, denoted by $ψ_c'(G)$, is the largest $k$ for which the line graph of $G$ has a connected and complete $k$-coloring. In this pap…
A graph is pseudo-outerplanar if each of its blocks has an embedding in the plane so that the vertices lie on a fixed circle and the edges lie inside the disk of this circle with each of them crossing at most one another. In this paper, the total coloring conjecture is completely confirmed for pseudo-outerplanar graphs. In particular, it is proved that the total chromatic number of every pseudo-outerplanar graph with maximum degree $Δ\geq 5$ is $Δ+1$.
A graph is pseudo-outerplanar if each of its blocks has an embedding in the plane so that the vertices lie on a fixed circle and the edges lie inside the disk of this circle with each of them crossing at most one another. It is proved that every pseudo-outerplanar graph with maximum degree Δ\geq 5 is totally (Δ+1)-choosable.
An $(r-1,1)$-coloring of an $r$-regular graph $G$ is an edge coloring such that each vertex is incident to $r-1$ edges of one color and $1$ edge of a different color. In this paper, we completely characterize all $4$-regular pseudographs (graphs that may contain parallel edges and loops) which do not have a $(3,1)$-coloring. An $\{r-1,1\}$-factor of an $r$-regular graph is a spanning subgraph in which each vertex has degree either $r-1$ or $1$. We prove various conditions that that must hold for any vertex-minimal $5$-regular pseudographs without $(4,1)$-colorings or without $\{4,1\}$-factors.…
In this paper, we prove lower and upper bounds on the achromatic and the pseudoachromatic indices of the $n$-dimensional finite projective space of order $q$.
In this paper, we study the achromatic and the pseudoachromatic numbers of planar and outerplanar graphs as well as planar graphs of girth 4 and graphs embedded on a surface. We give asymptotically tight results and lower bounds for maximal embedded graphs.
The broadcast scheduling problem asks how a multihop network of broadcast transceivers operating on a shared medium may share the medium in such a way that communication over the entire network is possible. This can be naturally modeled as a graph coloring problem via distance-2 coloring (L(1,1)-labeling, strict scheduling). This coloring is difficult to compute and may require a number of colors quadratic in the graph degree. This paper introduces pseudo-scheduling, a relaxation of distance-2 coloring. Centralized and decentralized algorithms that compute pseudo-schedules with colors linear i…
In FOCS'2002, Even et al. introduced and studied the notion of conflict-free colorings of geometrically defined hypergraphs. They motivated it by frequency assignment problems in cellular networks. This notion has been extensively studied since then. A conflict-free coloring of a graph is a coloring of its vertices such that the neighborhood (pointed or closed) of each vertex contains a vertex whose color differs from the colors of all other vertices in that neighborhood. In this paper we study conflict-colorings of intersection graphs of geometric objects. We show that any intersection graph …
If $G$ and $H$ are two cubic graphs, then an $H$-coloring of $G$ is a proper edge-coloring $f$ with edges of $H$, such that for each vertex $x$ of $G$, there is a vertex $y$ of $H$ with $f(\partial_G(x))=\partial_H(y)$. If $G$ admits an $H$-coloring, then we will write $H\prec G$. The Petersen coloring conjecture of Jaeger states that for any bridgeless cubic graph $G$, one has: $P\prec G$. The second author has recently introduced the Sylvester coloring conjecture, which states that for any cubic graph $G$ one has: $S\prec G$. Here $S$ is the Sylvester graph on $10$ vertices. In this paper, w…
Felsner, Hurtado, Noy and Streinu (2000) conjectured that arrangement graphs of simple great-circle arrangements have chromatic number at most $3$. Motivated by this conjecture, we study the colorability of arrangement graphs for different classes of arrangements of (pseudo-)circles. In this paper the conjecture is verified for $\triangle$-saturated pseudocircle arrangements, i.e., for arrangements where one color class of the 2-coloring of faces consists of triangles only, as well as for further classes of (pseudo-)circle arrangements. These results are complemented by a construction which ma…
For a family of geometric objects in the plane $\mathcal{F}=\{S_1,\ldots,S_n\}$, define $χ(\mathcal{F})$ as the least integer $\ell$ such that the elements of $\mathcal{F}$ can be colored with $\ell$ colors, in such a way that any two intersecting objects have distinct colors. When $\mathcal{F}$ is a set of pseudo-disks that may only intersect on their boundaries, and such that any point of the plane is contained in at most $k$ pseudo-disks, it can be proven that $χ(\mathcal{F})\le 3k/2 + o(k)$ since the problem is equivalent to cyclic coloring of plane graphs. In this paper, we study the same…
Complete colorings have the property that any two color classes has at least an edge between them. Parameters such as the Grundy, achromatic and pseudoachromatic numbers comes from complete colorings, with some additional requirement. In this paper, we estimate these numbers in the Kneser graph $K(n,k)$ for some values of $n$ and $k$. We give the exact value of the achromatic number of $K(n,2)$.
We investigate the emergence of spanning structures in sparse pseudo-random $k$-uniform hypergraphs, using the following comparatively weak notion of pseudo-randomness. A $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $n$ vertices is called $(p,α,ε)$-pseudo-random if for all (not necessarily disjoint) vertex subsets $A_1,\dots, A_k{\subseteq} V(H)$ with $|A_1|\cdots |A_k|{\geq}αn^{k}$ we have $$e(A_1,\dots, A_k)=(1\pmε)p |A_1|\cdots |A_k|.$$ For any linear $k$-uniform $F$ we provide a bound on $α=α(n)$ in terms of $p=p(n)$ and $F$, such that (under natural divisibility assumptions on $n$) any $k$-uniform $\big…
The pseudoachromatic index of the finite affine space $\mathrm{AG}(n,q),$ denoted by $ψ'(\mathrm{AG}(n,q)),$ is the the maximum number of colors in any complete line-coloring of $\mathrm{AG}(n,q).$ When the coloring is also proper, the maximum number of colors is called the achromatic index of $\mathrm{AG}(n,q).$ We prove that if $n$ is even then $ψ'(\mathrm{AG}(n,q))\sim q^{1.5n-1}$; while when $n$ is odd the value is bounded by $q^{1.5(n-1)}<ψ'(\mathrm{AG}(n,q))<q^{1.5n-1}$. Moreover, we prove that the achromatic index of $\mathrm{AG}(n,q)$ is $q^{1.5n-1}$ for even $n,$ and we provides the e…
Ramanujan graphs have extremal spectral properties, which imply a remarkable combinatorial behavior. In this paper we compute the high dimensional Hodge-Laplace spectrum of Ramanujan triangle complexes, and show that it implies a combinatorial expansion property, and a pseudo-randomness result. For this purpose we prove a Cheeger-type inequality and a mixing lemma of independent interest.
