The pseudo-one dimensional brannerite type compound CoV2O6 has been studied by magnetisation and heat capacity measurements in the temperature range 1.8 < T < 300 K and in applied fields of up to 9 T. Our measurements show an unusual balance of exchange interactions (CW= 2.8(2) K) and a single antiferromagnetic transition at TN = 7 K. M(H) isotherms recorded below 5 K show a metamagnetic transition and a 1/3 magnetisation plateau. From 5-7 K, only the metamagnetic transition is observed. For T < TN < ~ 25 K, our heat capacity and magnetisation measurements show evidence for strong low dimensional ferromagnetic fluctuations. We propose a simple phase diagram, discuss the principle features and emphasise the importance of Ising anisotropy.
Heavy fermion (HF) materials exhibit a rich array of phenomena due to the strong Kondo coupling between their localized moments and itinerant electrons. A central question in their study is to understand the interplay between magnetic order and charge transport, and its role in stabilizing new quantum phases of matter. Particularly promising in this regard is a family of tetragonal intermetallic compounds Ce{$TX$}$_2$ ($T=$ transition metal, $X=$ pnictogen), that includes a variety of HF compounds showing $T$-linear electronic specific heat $\bf{C_e \sim γT}$, with $γ\sim$ 20-500 mJ$\cdot$mol$…
Sr4Ru3O10 is a Ruddlesden-Popper compound with triple Ru-O perovskite layers separated by Sr-O alkali layers. This compound presents a rare coexistence of interlayer (c-axis) ferromagnetism and intralayer (basal-plane) metamagnetism at ambient pressure. Here we report the observation of pressure-induced, intralayer itinerant antiferromagnetism arising from the interlayer ferromagnetism. The application of modest hydrostatic pressure generates an anisotropy that causes a flattening and a tilting of RuO6 octahedra. All magnetic and transport results from this study indicate these lattice distort…
To solve the puzzle of metamagnetic phenomena in heavy fermion systems, we have compared paramagnetic isostructural Ce and Yb systems, CeNi$_2$Ge$_2$ and YbNi$_2$Ge$_2$, both of which are located near a magnetic instability. The most intriguing result is discovery of a metamagnetic-like transition in both systems from magnetization measurements in a pulsed magnetic fields. This is the first observation of the metamagnetism for isomorphic Ce and Yb paramagnetic systems. Similar to other metamagnets, the metamagnetic transition fields for both compounds are well scaled by the temperature $T_χ^{\…
The recent discoveries of proximate quantum spin-liquid compounds and their potential application in quantum computing informs the search for new candidate materials for quantum spin-ice and spin-liquid physics. While the majority of such work has centered on members of the pyrochlore family due to their inherently frustrated linked tetrahedral structure, the rare-earth pyrogermanates also show promise for possible frustrated magnetic behavior. With the familiar stoichiometry $RE_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$, these compounds generally have tetragonal symmetry with a rare-earth sublattice built of a spiral of…
We report the synthesis and characterization of a new quantum magnet [2-[Bis(2-hydroxybenzyl)aminomethyl]pyridine]Ni(II)-trimer (BHAP-Ni3) in single-crystalline form. Our combined experimental and theoretical investigations reveal an exotic spin state that stabilizes a robust 2/3 magnetization plateau between 7 and 20 T in an external magnetic field. AC-susceptibility measurements show the absence of any magnetic order/glassy state down to 60 mK. The magnetic ground state is disordered and specific-heat measurements reveal the gapped nature of the spin excitations. Most interestingly, our theo…
CeRh$_3$Si$_2$ has been reported to exhibit metamagnetic transitions below 5~K, a giant crystal field splitting, and anisotropic magnetic properties from single crystal magnetization and heat capacity measurements. Here we report results of neutron and x-ray scattering studies of the magnetic structure and crystal-field excitations to further understand the magnetism of this compound. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) reveal a $J_z$\,=\,1/2 groundstate for Ce when considering the crystallographic $a$ direction as quantization axis, thus explainin…
The Heisenberg model on a face center cubic (fcc) lattice is a typical three-dimensional frustrated spin system expected to have magnetization plateaus and supersolid phases. There are model compounds $A_2$CoTeO$_6$ ($A$ = Ca, Sr, Pb) for the fcc lattice but with lattice distortions. Motivated by the presence of the compounds, we investigate the ground state of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a tetragonally distorted fcc lattice in the magnetic field using a large-size cluster mean-field method for the sake of finding new supersolid phases. We find five supersolid phases in …
The rare-earth intermetallic compound Ho$_5$Sn$_3$ demonstrates fascinating magnetic properties which include temperature-driven multiple magnetic transitions and field driven metamagnetism. We address the magnetic character of this exciting compound through a combined experimental and theoretical studies. Ho$_5$Sn$_3$ orders antiferromagnetically below $~28$ K, and shows further spin reorientation transitions at 15 K and 12 K. We observe a sizable amount of low-temperature magnetocaloric effect in Ho$_5$Sn$_3$ with a maximum value of entropy change $ΔS$ = -9.5 JKg$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$ for an applie…
Emergence of partially disordered antiferromagnetism and isothermal magnetization plateau due to geometrical frustration in a metallic compound, Er2RhSi3
We measured the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat and the magnetic-field dependence of the magnetization of CuInVO$_5$. An antiferromagnetically ordered state appears below $T_{\rm N} = 2.7$ K. We observed a $\frac{1}{2}$ quantum magnetization plateau above 30 T at 1.3 K. We show that the spin system consists of antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ tetramers with $J_1 = 240 \pm 20$ and $J_2 = -142 \pm 10$ K for the intratetramer interactions.
Despite the absence of an apparent triangular pattern in the crystal structure, we observe unusually well pronounced 1/3 magnetization plateaus in the quasi one-dimensional Ising spin chain compound CoGeO$_3$ which belongs to the class of pyroxene minerals. We succeeded in uncovering the detailed microscopic spin structure of the 1/3 magnetization plateau phase by means of neutron diffraction. We observed changes of the initial antiferromagnetic zero-field spin structure that are resembling a regular formation of antiferromagnetic "domain wall boundaries", resulting in a kind of modulated magn…

We report on a sequence of field-induced transitions in the zigzag ladder compound BaDy2O4 studied with powder neutron diffraction and magnetisation measurements. In agreement with the previously published results, the low temperature zero-field structure is characterised by two half-integer propagation vectors, k1=[1/2 0 1/2] and k2= 1/2 1/2 1/2]. However, on application of an external magnetic field, the Bragg peaks corresponding to the zero-field structure lose their intensity rather rapidly and disappear completely in a field of 2.5 kOe. In the intermediate fields, 2.5 to 22.5 kOe, new pea…
Magnetic excitations and the spin Hamiltonian of the spin-1 J1-J1-J2 trimer chain compound CaNi3P4O14 have been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering. Experimental data reveal gapped dispersive spin wave excitations in the 3D long-range ordered magnetic state (TC = 16 K), and gapless magnetic excitations above the TC. Simulated magnetic excitations, by using the linear spin wave theory, for a model of coupled trimer spin-chains provide a good description of the observed experimental data. The analysis reveals both ferromagnetic J1 and J2 interactions within the chains, and an antiferrom…
Quantum spin liquid (QSL) state in rare-earth triangular lattice has attracted much attention recently due to its potential application in quantum computing and communication. Here we report the single-crystal growth synthesis, crystal structure characterizations and magnetic properties of $A$YbSe$_{2}$ ($A$= K, Rb) compounds. The X-ray diffraction analysis shows that $A$YbSe$_{2}$ ($A$ = K and Rb) crystallizes in a trigonal space group, $R$-3$m$ (No. 166) with Z = 3. $A$YbSe$_{2}$ possesses a two-dimensional (2D) Yb-Se-Yb layered structure formed by edged-shared YbSe$_6$ octahedra. The magnet…
Anisotropic susceptibility of the geometrically frustrated spin-chain compound Ca3Co2O6
Almost Perfect Frustration in the Dimer Magnet Ba$_2$CoSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$
We report a layered ternary selenide BaPt4Se6 featuring sesqui-selenide Pt2Se3 layers sandwiched by Ba atoms. The Pt2Se3 layers in this compound can be derived from the Dirac-semimetal PtSe2 phase with Se vacancies that form a honeycomb structure. This structure results in a Pt (VI) and Pt (II) mixed-valence compound with both PtSe6 octahedra and PtSe4 square net coordination configurations. Temperature dependent electrical transport measurements suggest two distinct anomalies: a resistivity crossover, mimic to the metal-insulator (M-I) transition at ~150K, and a resistivity plateau at tempera…
Spin-spin correlations and microscopic origin of net magnetization in the spin-1 trimer chain compound CaNi3P4O14 have been investigated by powder neutron diffraction. The present study reveals a 3D long-range magnetic ordering below 16 K where the magnetic structure consists of ferromagnetic trimers that are coupled ferromagnetically along the spin-chain. The moment components along the a and c axes arrange antiferromagnetically. Our study establishes that the uncompensated moment components along the b axis result in a net magnetization per unit cell. The magnetic structure, determined in th…
