We investigate the sensitivities of future neutrino oscillation experiments for measuring the neutrino mass squared differences and leptonic mixing angles independently with neutrinos and anti-neutrinos. We update the expected sensitivities of Neutrino Factories to the "atmospheric" (anti-)neutrino parameters using an optimized setup. A dedicated beta-Beam facility, in combination with a SPMIN reactor experiment, could give excellent sensitivities also to the "solar" parameters, for neutrinos and anti-neutrinos respectively. A signal of a different mass matrix for neutrinos and anti-neutrinos would imply CPT violation and non-locality of the underlying particle theory.
In this talk, we investigate extrinsic CPT violation in neutrino oscillations in matter with three flavors. Note that extrinsic CPT violation is different from intrinsic CPT violation. Extrinsic CPT violation is one way of quantifying matter effects, whereas intrinsic CPT violation would mean that the CPT invariance theorem is not valid. We present analytical formulas for the extrinsic CPT probability differences and discuss their implications for long-baseline experiments and neutrino factory setups.
This talk provides a status report on CPT violation in neutral-meson oscillations, focusing on implications of the CPT- and Lorentz-violating standard-model extension.
We analyze the possibility of observing CPT violation in the top sector. We present current bounds on CPT violation in this sector, and analyze the prospects of improving these bounds at the LHC.
The basic feature of the measurement of CPT violation in the neutral kaon system is overviewed beginning with noting the physical implication of CPT violation. After describing $K^0-\bar{K}^0$ system at length, how CPT test is possible is illustrated with adding a few remarks on it.
Minimal CPT violation has been constrained using observations of neutral-meson oscillations. Violation of CPT symmetry arising from nonminimal operators in the Lagrange density can also occur. A general approach using scalar effective field theory is presented and used to infer the effects of nonminimal CPT violation on neutral-meson oscillations.
Minuscule violations of CPT and Lorentz invariance might arise in an extension of the standard model as suppressed effects from a more fundamental theory. In this contribution to the CarruthersFest, I present and answer some questions about CPT and the possibility of its violation.
This contribution to the CPT'16 meeting briefly highlights some of the recent progress in the phenomenology of Lorentz and CPT violation, with emphasis on research performed at the Indiana University Center for Spacetime Symmetries.
Possible signals for indirect CPT violation arising in experiments with neutral kaons are considered in the context of a general CPT- and Lorentz-violating standard-model extension. Certain CPT observables can depend on the meson momentum and exhibit sidereal variations in time. Any leading-order CPT violation would be controlled by four parameters that can be separately constrained in appropriate experiments. Recent experiments bound certain combinations of these parameters at the level of about $10^{-20}$ GeV.
Overview of spontaneous Lorentz and CPT breaking mechanism in the context of the standard model contributed to the proceedings for the Coral Gables meeting.
We examine the effects on baryogenesis of spontaneous CPT violation in a string-based scenario. Under suitable circumstances, certain CPT-violating terms can produce a large baryon asymmetry at the grand-unified scale that reduces to the observed value via sphaleron or other dilution mechanisms.
In this talk, the status of CPT tests with neutral mesons is reviewed in the context of quantum field theory and the Lorentz- and CPT-violating standard-model extension.
Space-based experiments offer sensitivity to numerous unmeasured effects involving Lorentz and CPT violation. We provide a classification of clock sensitivities and present explicit expressions for time variations arising in such experiments from nonzero coefficients in the Lorentz- and CPT-violating Standard-Model Extension.
It is shown that there is a possibility of violation of CPT symmetry in the Standard Model which does not contradict to the famous CPT theorem. To check this possibility experimentally it is necessary to increase the precision of measurements of the proton and antiproton mass difference by an order of magnitude
A general Lorentz-violating extension of the standard model of particle physics, allowing for both CPT-even and CPT-odd effects, is described. Some of its theoretical aspects and experimental implications are summarized.
CPT violation has the potential to explain all three existing neutrino anomalies without enlarging the neutrino sector. CPT violation in the Dirac mass terms of the three neutrino flavors preserves Lorentz invariance, but generates independent masses for neutrinos and antineutrinos. This specific signature is strongly motivated by braneworld scenarios with extra dimensions, where neutrinos are the natural messengers for Standard Model physics of CPT violation in the bulk. A simple model of maximal CPT violation is sufficient to explain the exisiting neutrino data quite neatly, while making dra…
In this paper we study the dynamical CPT violation in the neutrino sector induced by the dark energy of the Universe. Specifically we consider a dark energy model where the dark energy scalar derivatively interacts with the right-handed neutrinos. This type of derivative coupling leads to a cosmological CPT violation during the evolution of the background field of the dark energy. We calculate the induced CPT violation of left-handed neutrinos and find the CPT violation produced in this way is consistent with the present experimental limit and sensitive to the future neutrino oscillation exper…
I address the phenomenology of CPT violation in the neutral kaon system under the assumption that it originates from Planck scale physics. This assumption opens the door to a new set of CPT violating parameters whose phenomenology is distinct from the $Δ$ parameter usually considered in the Hamiltonian. The origin of these parameters reflects a possible departure from a $S$-matrix evolution. Existing bounds on CPT violation are near the expected range based on naive dimensional analysis. This provides a strong incentive to pursue the quest of CPT violation in near-future kaon experiments. (Tal…
Experimental signals for indirect CPT violation in the neutral-meson systems are studied in the context of a general CPT- and Lorentz-violating standard-model extension. In this explicit theory, some CPT observables depend on the meson momentum and exhibit diurnal variations. The consequences for CPT tests vary significantly with the specific experimental scenario. The wide range of possible effects is illustrated for two types of CPT experiment presently underway, one involving boosted uncorrelated kaons and the other involving unboosted correlated kaon pairs.
Tests of CPT and Lorentz symmetry using neutral-meson oscillations are studied within a formalism that allows for indirect CPT and T violation of arbitrary size and is independent of phase conventions. The analysis is particularly appropriate for studies of CPT and T violation in oscillations of the heavy neutral mesons D, B_d, and B_s. The general Lorentz- and CPT-breaking standard-model extension is used to derive an expression for the parameter for CPT violation. It varies in a prescribed way with the magnitude and orientation of the meson momentum and consequently also with sidereal time. …
This talk at the CPT'19 meeting outlines a few recent developments in Lorentz and CPT violation, with particular attention to results obtained by researchers at the Indiana University Center for Spacetime Symmetries.
The T-odd triple product (TP) asymmetries in B decays to a pair of vector mesons are treated as a good probe of CP violation because of the CPT symmetry. If CPT is no longer a good symmetry, such correlations between T-odd and CP-odd observables do not exist, and one might get unexpected nonzero TP asymmetries as a signal for CPT violation. We give a general formalism of TP asymmetries in the presence of CPT violation, either in decay or in neutral meson mixing. We also discuss how the observables depending on the transversity amplitudes are modified, and compare our expressions with the LHCb …
A general technique is presented for treating CPT violation in neutral-meson oscillations. The effective field theory for a complex scalar with CPT-violating operators of arbitrary mass dimension is incorporated in the formalism for the propagation and mixing of neutral mesons. Observable effects are discussed, and first measurements of CPT-violating operators of dimension five are extracted from existing experimental results.
We examine matter induced CPT violation effects in long baseline electron neutrino appearance experiments in a low energy neutrino factory setup. Assuming CPT invariance in vacuum, the magnitude of CPT violating asymmetry in matter has been estimated using the exact expressions for the transition probabilities. The dependence of the asymmetry on the oscillation parameters like mixing angles, mass squared differences as well as on the Dirac CP violating phase has been investigated.
We present an analysis of CPT violation in $B\to J/ψK$ decays. A method of kaon regeneration is proposed to increase the $K_{S(L)}$ interference effects. With the time evolution of both neutral B and K mesons, we show that it is possible to determine the CPT violating parameter in $B^0-\bar{B^0}$ mixing or constrain it.
The feasibility of placing bounds on CPT violation from experiments with neutral-$B$ mesons is examined. We consider situations with uncorrelated mesons and ones with either unboosted or boosted correlated mesons. Analytical expressions valid for small T- and CPT-violating parameters are presented for time-dependent and time-integrated decay rates, and various relevant asymmetries are derived. We use Monte-Carlo simulations to model experimental conditions for a plausible range of CPT-violating parameters. The treatment uses realistic data incorporating background effects, resolutions, and acc…
The oscillation neutrino problem in the extended standard model with minimal number of parameters is considered. The dispersion relations with explicit neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry are discussed and an explanation to the MINIBooNE and solar neutrino controversy is offered. Bounds for the CPT violation symmetry are also found.
We consider neutrino oscillations in the minimal Standard-Model Extension describing general Lorentz and CPT violation. Among the models without neutrino mass differences is one with two degrees of freedom that reproduces most major observed features of neutrino behavior.
We investigate matter-induced (or extrinsic) CPT violation effects in neutrino oscillations in matter. Especially, we present approximate analytical formulas for the CPT-violating probability differences for three flavor neutrino oscillations in matter with an arbitrary matter density profile. Note that we assume that the CPT invariance theorem holds, which means that the CPT violation effects arise entirely because of the presence of matter. As special cases of matter density profiles, we consider constant and step-function matter density profiles, which are relevant for neutrino oscillation …
Neutrino oscillations in the presence of Lorentz violation can present novel observable signals in both long- and short-baseline experiments. In this talk we describe the theory and its different regimes depending on properties of the experiments. CPT violation, its systematic search and possible connections to latest results are also presented.
Spontaneous CPT breaking arising in string theory has been suggested as a possible observable experimental signature in neutral-meson systems. We provide a theoretical framework for the treatment of low-energy effects of spontaneous CPT violation and the attendant partial Lorentz breaking. The analysis is within the context of conventional relativistic quantum mechanics and quantum field theory in four dimensions. We use the framework to develop a CPT-violating extension to the minimal standard model that could serve as a basis for establishing quantitative CPT bounds.
We show a simple mechanism for a dynamical CPT violation in the neutron sector. In particular, we show a {\it CPT-violating see-saw mechanism}, generating a Majorana mass and a CPT violating mass for the neutron. CPT-violating see-saw involves a sterile partner of the neutron, living in a hidden sector, in which CPT is spontaneously broken. In particular, neutrons (antineutrons) can communicate with the hidden sector through non-perturbative quantum gravity effects called {\it exotic instantons}. Exotic instantons dynamically break R-parity, generating one effective vertex between the neutron …
Signals for Lorentz and CPT violation can appear in a wide range of experiments including hadron colliders like the LHC. We present a calculation of the Lorentz-violating cross section for top-quark pair production via gluon fusion. This process dominates at the LHC, and analysis of LHC data should permit sharpening the constraints on top-quark Lorentz violation obtained recently by the D0 Collaboration. We also present a separate calculation of single-top production, which is sensitive to CPT violation. Data from the LHC can be used to measure coefficients for CPT violation in the top-quark s…
This presentation discusses some of the signals for Lorentz violation potentially observable in atomic spectroscopy and clock-comparison experiments. The emphasis of the discussion is on how the angular-momentum quantum numbers of the states involved in the transition determine the properties of the possible sidereal variation of the transition frequency.
The effects of perturbative Lorentz and CPT violation on neutrino oscillations are studied. Features include neutrino-antineutrino oscillations, direction dependence, and unconventional energy behavior. Leading-order corrections arising from renormalizable operators are derived in the general three-flavor effective field theory. The results are applied to neutrino-beam experiments with long baselines, which offer excellent sensitivity to the accompanying effects. Key signatures of Lorentz and CPT violation using neutrino beams include sidereal variations in the oscillation probabilities arisin…
Classic tests of CPT symmetry have been done in the neutral-meson system. These have been continued with new results in the framework of the Standard-Model Extension, where the coefficient for CPT violation is both boost and direction dependent. Recent contributions and new phenomenological improvements are discussed with possible new contributions for $b$ and $d$ specific correlated decays at the Belle II asymmetric energy collider.
An overview of recent progress on testing Lorentz and CPT symmetry using Penning traps is presented. The theory of quantum electrodynamics with Lorentz-violating operators of mass dimensions up to six is summarized. Dominant shifts in the cyclotron and anomaly frequencies of the confined particles and antiparticles due to Lorentz and CPT violation are derived. Existing results of the comparisons of charge-to-mass ratios and magnetic moments involving protons, antiprotons, electrons, and positrons are used to constrain various coefficients for Lorentz violation.
Violations of the Lorentz and CPT symmetries can appear as observable effects in the direct production of top quarks and their subsequent decays. Earlier results for the $q\bar{q}$ production process for $t\bar{t}$ pairs have been extended to include the gluon fusion process which dominates at the LHC. In addition results are obtained for testing CPT symmetry through single top quark production.
Violations of CPT invariance can induce neutrino-to-antineutrino transitions. We study this effect for solar neutrinos and use the upper bound on the solar neutrino-to-antineutrino transition probability from the KamLAND experiment to constrain CPT-symmetry-violating coefficients of the general Standard-Model Extension. The long propagation distance from the Sun to the Earth allows us to improve existing limits by factors ranging from about a thousand to $10^{11}$.
I review the status of CP violating phenomena and CPT tests in the neutral Kaon system. Comparisons of present data with the expectations of the Cabibbo Kobayashi Maskawa model are presented, with particular emphasis being focused on the role of the theoretical uncertainties in this comparison. In addition, novel tests of CPT at DAFNE and Fermilab are briefly discussed.
Invariance under the combined transformations of CPT (in any order) is guaranteed in Quantum Field Theory in flat space times due to a basic theorem (CPT Theorem). The currently used formalism of particle physics phenomenology is based on this theorem. However, there may be violations of the basic underlying assumptions of this theorem in models of quantum gravity, namely Lorentz covariance, unitarity and/or locality of interactions. This may lead to observable (in principle) effects of CPT violation. Since there is no single figure of merit for this potential violation, the respective phenomen…
We analyze the prospects for observing CPT violation using neutral-meson P0-P0bar systems. Before one can claim a measurement of CPT violation, one must be able to rule out the possibility that its result is due to simpler new-physics effects. In particular, one must be able to separate the CPT-violating quantities from parameters violating the Delta P = ΔQ rule of semileptonic decays, and from new-physics contributions to the production mechanism of the neutral mesons. One can isolate CPT violation using the semileptonic decays of single, tagged neutral mesons; unfortunately, this situation c…
Analogue models for CP violation in neutral-meson systems are studied in a general framework. No-go results are obtained for models in classical mechanics that are nondissipative or that involve one-dimensional oscillators. A complete emulation is shown to be possible for a two-dimensional oscillator with rheonomic constraints, and an explicit example with spontaneous T and CPT violation is presented. The results have implications for analogue models with electrical circuits.
We study the viability of observation of CPT violation in the top sector at future colliders. We show possible studies and different estimates for hadronic and linear colliders. In particular, we will present current constraints for Tevatron and prospects for the LHC and the ILC.
CPT invariance is one of the most fundamental symmetries in nature and it plays a major role in the formulation of Quantum Field Theory. Although no definitive signal of CPT violation has been observed so far, there are many reasons to carefully investigate various low-energy phenomena that can provide better probes to test CPT symmetry. In this context, neutrino experiments are expected to provide more stringent bounds on CPT invariance violation when compared to the existing bounds from the Kaon system. In this work, we investigate the sensitivity of the upcoming long-baseline experiments: H…
Lorentz- and CPT-violating effects initiating two-body electromagnetic flavor-changing decays of charged leptons are studied in the framework of Lorentz-violating effective field theory. An analysis of data from experiments at the Paul Scherrer Institute and at the Stanford Linear Accelerator measuring the branching ratios of these decays provides 576 constraints on independent flavor-changing effects in the charged-lepton sector, consistent with no Lorentz and CPT violation at the level of parts in $10^{-13}$ GeV$^{-1}$ to $10^{-9}$ GeV$^{-1}$.
When a neutral meson $(P^0 \text{ or } \bar P^0)$ decays to two vector particles, a large number of observables can be constructed from differential decay rate based on the polarization of final state. But, theoretically, all of them are not independent to each other and hence, some relations among observables emerge. These relations have been well studied in the scenario with no $T$ and $CPT$ violation in neutral meson mixing and no direct $CP$ violation as well. In this paper, we have studied the relations among observables in the presence of $T$, $CP$ and $CPT$ violating effects in mixing o…
In recent years, the breakdown of spacetime symmetries has been identified as a promising research field in the context of Planck-scale phenomenology. For example, various theoretical approaches to the quantum-gravity problem are known to accommodate minute violations of CPT invariance. This talk covers various topics within this research area. In particular, some mechanisms for spacetime-symmetry breaking as well as the Standard-Model Extension (SME) test framework will be reviewed; the connection between CPT and Lorentz invariance in quantum field theory will be exposed; and various experime…
An overview of recent progress on searches for Lorentz- and CPT-violating signals with confined particles and antiparticles in Penning traps is presented. In the context of the Standard-Model Extension (SME), leading-order shifts in the cyclotron and anomaly frequencies of a confined particle and antiparticle due to Lorentz and CPT violation are provided. The two frequencies are then related to comparisons of charge-to-mass ratios and magnetic moments between particles and antiparticles. Applying reported results from Penning-trap experiments leads to new limits on various coefficients for Lor…
It is known that the existing experimental limit for$ CPT $ violation is rather poor; the 10 \% level at best. The $ \DSDQ $ rule is tested only up to 2 \%. In this note, we discuss the possibility of measuring $ T, CP, CPT $ and $ \DSDQ $ rule violations in the neutral $ K $ meson system. It is shown that not all the symmetry breaking parameters can be determined at a symmetric $ ϕ$ factory. Experiments with $ K^0 $ and $ \bar{K}^0 $ beams are needed to test all the symmetries.
Neutral pseudoscalar mesons in an entangled or Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen state are routinely produced in phi and B factories. Based on the peculiar properties of an entangled state, we present some general exact theorems about parameters characterizing CP and CPT violations, by using various asymmetries defined for the correlated decays of the two entangled mesons, which are rigorously calculated.
I give a short overview about the possibilities and problems related to the measurement of CP violation in long baseline experiments. Special attention is paid to the issue of degeneracies and a method for their resolution is quantitatively discussed. The CP violation reach for different experiments is compared in dependence of $\sin^22θ_{13}$ and $\dm{21}$. Furthermore a short comment about the possible effects of matter induced T violation is made. Finally the limits on CPT violation obtainable at a neutrino factory are shown.
In this conference proceedings, some comments on the present status and recent growth of efforts to find Lorentz and CPT violation are given by extracting metrics from the annually updated "Data Tables for Lorentz and CPT Violation." They reveal that tests span all the sectors of particle and gravitational physics, and have shown remarkable and consistent growth. Through numerous innovations and refinements in experiments, a large body of data has been amassed with ever-increasing precisions. The Tables are available through the Cornell preprint archive at arXiv:0801.0287.
A large number of observables can be constructed from differential decay rate based on the polarization of final state while considering decay of a neutral meson $(P^0 \text{ or } \bar P^0)$ to two vector particles. But all of these observables are not independent to each other since there are only a few independent theoretical parameters controlling the whole dynamics and therefore various relations among observables emerge. In this paper, we have studied the behaviour of observables for neutral meson decaying to two vectors in presence of T and CPT violations in mixing accompanied by both di…
In this proceedings, a summary is presented of recent research investigating ways in which high-precision atomic clocks on the International Space Station could search for violations of Lorentz and CPT symmetry. Space-based searches offer certain experimental advantages over Earth-based experiments investigating these symmetries. The results are based on work published in Physical Review Letters, volume 82, article 090801, 2002.
