When a neutral meson $(P^0 \text{ or } \bar P^0)$ decays to two vector particles, a large number of observables can be constructed from differential decay rate based on the polarization of final state. But, theoretically, all of them are not independent to each other and hence, some relations among observables emerge. These relations have been well studied in the scenario with no $T$ and $CPT$ violation in neutral meson mixing and no direct $CP$ violation as well. In this paper, we have studied the relations among observables in the presence of $T$, $CP$ and $CPT$ violating effects in mixing only. We find that except four of them, all the other old relations get violated and new relations appear if $T$ and $CPT$ violations in mixing are present. Invalidity of these relation will signify the presence of direct violation of $T$, $CP$ and $CPT$ (i.e. violation in the decay itself).
A large number of observables can be constructed from differential decay rate based on the polarization of final state while considering decay of a neutral meson $(P^0 \text{ or } \bar P^0)$ to two vector particles. But all of these observables are not independent to each other since there are only a few independent theoretical parameters controlling the whole dynamics and therefore various relations among observables emerge. In this paper, we have studied the behaviour of observables for neutral meson decaying to two vectors in presence of T and CPT violations in mixing accompanied by both di…
A mechanism for spontaneous CPT breaking appears in string theory. Possible implications for present-energy particle models are discussed. A realistic string theory might exhibit CPT violation at levels detectable in current or future experiments. Bounds on CPT from neutral-meson oscillations are considered.
In this talk, the status of CPT tests with neutral mesons is reviewed in the context of quantum field theory and the Lorentz- and CPT-violating standard-model extension.
The sensitivity of experiments with neutral mesons to possible indirect CPT violation is examined. It is shown that experiments conventionally regarded as equivalent can have CPT reaches differing by orders of magnitude within the framework of a minimal CPT- and Lorentz-violating extension of the standard model.
A sketch of our results on CPT and strings is given. A mechanism for spontaneous CPT violation in string theory is briefly reviewed, and recent theoretical progress is summarized. Possible CPT-violating contributions to a four-dimensional low-energy effective theory could produce effects at levels testable in neutral-meson systems. Likely experimental signatures and attainable bounds are outlined in candidate experiments with correlated and uncorrelated neutral mesons.
The basic feature of the measurement of CPT violation in the neutral kaon system is overviewed beginning with noting the physical implication of CPT violation. After describing $K^0-\bar{K}^0$ system at length, how CPT test is possible is illustrated with adding a few remarks on it.
Minimal CPT violation has been constrained using observations of neutral-meson oscillations. Violation of CPT symmetry arising from nonminimal operators in the Lagrange density can also occur. A general approach using scalar effective field theory is presented and used to infer the effects of nonminimal CPT violation on neutral-meson oscillations.
A general technique is presented for treating CPT violation in neutral-meson oscillations. The effective field theory for a complex scalar with CPT-violating operators of arbitrary mass dimension is incorporated in the formalism for the propagation and mixing of neutral mesons. Observable effects are discussed, and first measurements of CPT-violating operators of dimension five are extracted from existing experimental results.
This talk provides an overview of a string-based mechanism for spontaneous CPT violation. A summary is given of theoretical developments. The mechanism could generate CPT-violating contributions to a four-dimensional low-energy effective theory and thereby produce detectable consequences for candidate experiments with neutral-meson systems.
Experimental signals for indirect CPT violation in the neutral-meson systems are studied in the context of a general CPT- and Lorentz-violating standard-model extension. In this explicit theory, some CPT observables depend on the meson momentum and exhibit diurnal variations. The consequences for CPT tests vary significantly with the specific experimental scenario. The wide range of possible effects is illustrated for two types of CPT experiment presently underway, one involving boosted uncorrelated kaons and the other involving unboosted correlated kaon pairs.
In this talk, a brief summary is given of the possibility of using neutral-kaon oscillations to bound CPT- and Lorentz-breaking parameters in an extension of the minimal standard model.
This talk summarizes some theoretical features and experimental implications of a general Lorentz-violating extension of the minimal SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1) standard model that allows for both CPT-even and CPT-odd effects. The theory would arise as the low-energy limit of a fundamental theory that is Lorentz and CPT covariant but in which spontaneous Lorentz breaking occurs. The use of neutral-meson oscillations and various QED systems to bound the apparent CPT and Lorentz violations is described.
Tests of CPT and Lorentz symmetry using neutral-meson oscillations are studied within a formalism that allows for indirect CPT and T violation of arbitrary size and is independent of phase conventions. The analysis is particularly appropriate for studies of CPT and T violation in oscillations of the heavy neutral mesons D, B_d, and B_s. The general Lorentz- and CPT-breaking standard-model extension is used to derive an expression for the parameter for CPT violation. It varies in a prescribed way with the magnitude and orientation of the meson momentum and consequently also with sidereal time. …
Classic tests of CPT symmetry have been done in the neutral-meson system. These have been continued with new results in the framework of the Standard-Model Extension, where the coefficient for CPT violation is both boost and direction dependent. Recent contributions and new phenomenological improvements are discussed with possible new contributions for $b$ and $d$ specific correlated decays at the Belle II asymmetric energy collider.
We investigate the issue of testing CPT invariance in the neutral-$D$ system, using $D$ events obtained either from fixed-target experiments or from a tau-charm factory. For both types of experiments we show that the expected suppression of mixing in the $D$ system, normally viewed as a disadvantage for CP tests, allows unsuppressed measurement of certain parameters describing CPT violation. Asymmetries are presented that permit the extraction of parameters for direct CPT violation in the $D$ system and for indirect CPT violation in the $K$ system. We also show that experiments on the neutral-…
We consider the decays of a correlated neutral-meson--antimeson state with C-parity +1. We show that there is CPT noninvariance in the mixing of the neutral mesons if, for any two decay modes f and g, the decay rate has a component R_A which is antisymmetric under the interchange of the decay times t_1 and t_2. In particular, one may cleanly extract the CPT-noninvariance parameter with the help of R_A by using opposite-sign dilepton events.
Neutral pseudoscalar mesons in an entangled or Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen state are routinely produced in phi and B factories. Based on the peculiar properties of an entangled state, we present some general exact theorems about parameters characterizing CP and CPT violations, by using various asymmetries defined for the correlated decays of the two entangled mesons, which are rigorously calculated.
The feasibility of placing bounds on CPT violation from experiments with neutral-$B$ mesons is examined. We consider situations with uncorrelated mesons and ones with either unboosted or boosted correlated mesons. Analytical expressions valid for small T- and CPT-violating parameters are presented for time-dependent and time-integrated decay rates, and various relevant asymmetries are derived. We use Monte-Carlo simulations to model experimental conditions for a plausible range of CPT-violating parameters. The treatment uses realistic data incorporating background effects, resolutions, and acc…
During the recent years experiments with neutral kaons have yielded remarkably sensitive results which are pertinent to such fundamental phenomena as CPT invariance (protecting causality), time-reversal invariance violation, coherence of wave functions, and entanglement of kaons in pair states. We describe the phenomenological developments and the theoretical conclusions drawn from the experimental material. An outlook to future experimentation is indicated.
Analogue models for CP violation in neutral-meson systems are studied in a general framework. No-go results are obtained for models in classical mechanics that are nondissipative or that involve one-dimensional oscillators. A complete emulation is shown to be possible for a two-dimensional oscillator with rheonomic constraints, and an explicit example with spontaneous T and CPT violation is presented. The results have implications for analogue models with electrical circuits.
This work gives a general overview of phenomenology developed for neutral-meson searches for CPT violation in the framework of the Standard-Model Extension with focus on meson factories. It gives a comparison of notations and fundamental approach in the formalism used by the different experiments. Asymmetries and possible experimental investigations are presented for tests of the momentum-dependent phenomenological parameter of CPT violation in neutral-meson oscillations. The general results apply to any mesons produced as correlated meson pairs and addresses the issue of decoherence as a cons…
It is known that the existing experimental limit for$ CPT $ violation is rather poor; the 10 \% level at best. The $ \DSDQ $ rule is tested only up to 2 \%. In this note, we discuss the possibility of measuring $ T, CP, CPT $ and $ \DSDQ $ rule violations in the neutral $ K $ meson system. It is shown that not all the symmetry breaking parameters can be determined at a symmetric $ ϕ$ factory. Experiments with $ K^0 $ and $ \bar{K}^0 $ beams are needed to test all the symmetries.
Recent and upcoming Fermilab experiments to probe the origin of CP violation and to search for CPT violation are reviewed for an audience of theoretical particle physics graduate students.
The neutral-kaon system constitutes a fantastic and unique laboratory for the study of CPT symmetry and the basic principles of quantum mechanics, and a $ϕ$-factory represents a unique opportunity to push forward these studies. The experimental results show no deviation from the expectations of quantum mechanics and CPT symmetry, while the extreme precision of the measure- ments, in some cases, reaches the interesting Planck-scale region. At present the KLOE-2 experiment is collecting data with an upgraded detector with the aim of significantly improving these kinds of experimental tests.
CPT-symmetry properties of the exact effective Hamiltonian H(eff) governing the time evolution in the K(0), K(O)-bar (neutral K mesons) subspace implied by such properties of the total Hamiltonian of the system under consideration are examined. We show that H(eff) can commute with CPT - operator only if H does not commute with it. We also find that, in contradistinction to the standard result of the Lee-Oehme-Yang (LOY) theory, Re.<K(0)|H(eff)|K(0)> = Re.<K(0)-bar|H(eff)|K(0)-bar>, i.e., (<K(0)|H(eff)|K(0)> - <K(0)-bar|H(eff)|K(0)-bar>) = 0, only if the total system does not preserve CPT-symme…
We consider neutral pseudoscalar mesons in an entangled or Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen state with $C=-1$. Due to quantum entanglement and antisymmetry of this state, the rates of the joint decays of the meson pair display various interesting features, as is well known. As functions of CP and CPT violating parameters, here we obtain some exact results about the joint decay rates and their asymmetries for a given time difference defined for joint decays to flavor eigenstates, as well as those for joint decays to CP eigenstates. The entanglement allows a meaningful and useful definition of the transi…
In this paper we present a novel CPT symmetry test in the neutral kaon system based, for the first time, on the direct comparison of the probabilities of a transition and its CPT reverse. The required interchange of "in" $\leftrightarrow$ "out" states for a given process is obtained exploiting the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations of neutral kaon pairs produced at a $ϕ$-factory. The observable quantities have been constructed by selecting the two semileptonic decays for flavour tag, the $ππ$ and $3π^0$ decays for CP tag and the time orderings of the decay pairs. The interpretation in terms …
We focus on two aspects of CPT invariance in neutral-meson--antimeson ($M^0 \bar M^0$) mixing: 1. Tests of CPT invariance, using only the property of ``lack of vacuum regeneration'', which occurs as a part of the well-known Lee--Oehme--Yang (LOY) theory; 2. Methods for extracting the CPT-violating mixing parameter $θ$ through explicit calculations by using the LOY-type theory fully. In the latter context, we demonstrate the importance of the C-even $| M^0 \bar M^0>$ state. In particular, by measuring the time dependence of opposite-sign dilepton events arising from decays of the C-even and C-o…
We start from a discussion of the general form and general CP-- and CPT-- transformation properties of the Lee--Oehme--Yang (LOY) effective Hamiltonian for the neutral kaon complex. Next we show that there exists an approximation which is more accurate than the LOY, and which leads to an effective Hamiltonian whose diagonal matrix elements posses CPT transformation properties, which differ from those of the LOY effective Hamiltonian. These properties of the mentioned effective Hamiltonians are compared with the properties of the exact effective Hamiltonian for the neutral kaon complex. We show…
We analyze the prospects for observing CPT violation using neutral-meson P0-P0bar systems. Before one can claim a measurement of CPT violation, one must be able to rule out the possibility that its result is due to simpler new-physics effects. In particular, one must be able to separate the CPT-violating quantities from parameters violating the Delta P = ΔQ rule of semileptonic decays, and from new-physics contributions to the production mechanism of the neutral mesons. One can isolate CPT violation using the semileptonic decays of single, tagged neutral mesons; unfortunately, this situation c…
The conclusions summarize the main, but not all, aspects of a two-days workshop held at MITP Mainz. The four covered aspects are T violation in decays of neutral B mesons, T and CPT studies in B0B0bar transitions with Belle, future measurements of T violation in B and D decays, and direct tests of T and CPT symmetries in the entangled neutral Kaon system at a ?Phi factory.
This talk provides a status report on CPT violation in neutral-meson oscillations, focusing on implications of the CPT- and Lorentz-violating standard-model extension.
Entangled pseudoscalar neutral meson pairs have been used in studying CP violation and searching CPT violation, but almost all the previous works concern $C=-1$ entangled state. Here we consider $C=+1$ entangled state of pseudoscalar neutral mesons, which is quite different from $C=-1$ entangled state and provides complementary information on symmetry violating parameters. After developing a general formalism, we consider three kinds of decay processes, namely, semileptonic-semileptonic, hadronic-hadronic and semileptonic-hadronic processes. For each kind of processes, we calculate the integra…
We show that new physics, either from CPT violation in B^0-\bar{B}^0 mixing or from ΔB = -ΔQ transitions, may lead to an opposite-sign dilepton asymmetry of neutral B-meson decays. Both effects have the same time-dependent behavior and therefore are in general indistinguishable from each other. We also clarify some ambiguity associated with the constraint on CPT violation in semileptonic decays of incoherent B^0 and \bar{B}^0 mesons.
Considering that the existing experimental limit for $CPT$ violation is still poor, we explore various possible ways to test $CPT$ symmetry in $CP$-violating $B$ decays at $e^{+}e^{-}$ $B$ factories. We find that it is difficult to distinguish between the effect of direct $CP$ violation and that of $CPT$ violation in the time-integrated measurements of neutral $B$ decays to $CP$ eigenstates such as $ψK_{S}$ and $π^{+}π^{-}$. Instead, a cleaner signal of small $CPT$ violation may appear in the time-integrated $CP$ asymmetries for a few non-$CP$-eigenstate channels, e.g., $B^{0}_{d}/\bar{B}^{0}_…
We revisit various results, which have been obtained by the BABAR and Belle Collaborations over the last twelve years, concerning symmetry properties of the Hamiltonian, which governs the time evolution and the decay of neutral B mesons. We find that those measurements, which established CP violation in B meson decay, 12 years ago, had as well established T (time-reversal) symmetry violation. They also confirmed CPT symmetry in the decay (T_CPT = 0) and symmetry with respect to time-reversal (epsilon? = 0) and to CPT (delta? = 0) in the B0 ?B0bar oscillation.
Parameters describing CPT violation are extracted from a variety of rate asymmetries in the neutral-$D$ system. The precision to which these parameters could be measured in present and planned machines is examined.
This paper contains a detailed analysis of the properties of the scalar product of short and long living superpositions of neutral $|K_{0}>$, $|{\bar{K}}_{0}>$ mesons. It is shown for the exact effective Hamiltonian for neutral meson subsystem that the scalar product of its eigenvectors, which correspond with these short and long living superpositions, can not be real with the assumption of CPT conserved and CP violated. The standard conclusion obtained within the Lee-Oehme-Yang theory of neutral kaons is that in this case such a product should be real.

We study breakdown of $CPT$ symmetry which can occur in the decay process $B \bar B \to l^\pm X^\mp f$ with $f$ being a CP eigenstate. In this process, the standard model expectations for time ordered semi-leptonic and hadronic events, i.e. which of the two decays takes place first, can be altered in the case that there is a violation of the $CPT$ symmetry. To illustrate this possibility, we identify and study several time integrated observables. We find that an experiment with $10^{9}$ $B\bar B$ pairs, has the capability for improving the bound on $CPT$ violating parameter or perhaps observe …
An overview of current experimental bounds on $CPT$ violation in neutral meson mixing is given. New values for the $CPT$ asymmetry in the $B^0$ and $B_s^0$ systems are deduced from published BaBar, Belle and LHCb results. With dedicated analyses, LHCb will be able to further improve the bounds on $CPT$ violation in the $D^0$, $B^0$ and $B_s^0$ systems. Since $CPT$ violation implies violation of Lorentz invariance in an interacting local quantum field theory, the observed $CPT$ asymmetry will exhibit sidereal- and boost-dependent variations. Such $CPT$-violating and Lorentz-violating effects ar…
We present a systematic phenomenological analysis of the tests of CPT symmetry that are possible within an {\em open} quantum-mechanical description of the neutral kaon system that is motivated by arguments based on quantum gravity and string theory. We develop a perturbative expansion in terms of the three small CPT-violating parameters admitted in this description, and provide expressions for a complete set of $K \rightarrow 2π, 3π$ and $π\ellν$ decay observables to second order in these small parameters. We also illustrate the new tests of CPT symmetry and quantum mechanics that are possibl…
We present an analysis of CPT violation in $B\to J/ψK$ decays. A method of kaon regeneration is proposed to increase the $K_{S(L)}$ interference effects. With the time evolution of both neutral B and K mesons, we show that it is possible to determine the CPT violating parameter in $B^0-\bar{B^0}$ mixing or constrain it.
I review the status of CP violating phenomena and CPT tests in the neutral Kaon system. Comparisons of present data with the expectations of the Cabibbo Kobayashi Maskawa model are presented, with particular emphasis being focused on the role of the theoretical uncertainties in this comparison. In addition, novel tests of CPT at DAFNE and Fermilab are briefly discussed.
The review covers transitions between M0 and M0bar in all four systems M0 = K0, D0, B0 and Bs. These systems are ideal laboratories for studying the discrete symmetries T and CPT. The properties of time reversal T are discussed in classical and quantum mechanics. T violation in K0 K0bar transitions has been observed in 1970 independent of assuming CPT symmetry by using the Bell-steinberger unitarity relation. Improvements of this observation are reviewed including the latest results in 2013. They show with high significance that CP violation in K0 K0bar transitions is only T violation without …
We show that $CPT$ is in general violated in a non-quantum-mechanical way in the effective low-energy theory derived from string theory, as a result of apparent world-sheet charge non-conservation induced by stringy monopoles corresponding to target-space black hole configurations. This modification of quantum mechanics does not violate energy conservation. The magnitude of this effective spontaneous violation of $CPT$ may not be be far from the present experimental sensitivity in the neutral kaon system. We demonstrate that our previously proposed stringy modifications to the quantum-mechanic…
Possible signals for indirect CPT violation arising in experiments with neutral kaons are considered in the context of a general CPT- and Lorentz-violating standard-model extension. Certain CPT observables can depend on the meson momentum and exhibit sidereal variations in time. Any leading-order CPT violation would be controlled by four parameters that can be separately constrained in appropriate experiments. Recent experiments bound certain combinations of these parameters at the level of about $10^{-20}$ GeV.
Photoproduction of neutral-kaon pairs is studied from the perspective of CP and CPT studies. Interference of the P and S waves, with the former due to diffractive phi production and the latter to f_0/a_0 production, is shown to enhance the CPT reach. Results are presented of Monte Carlo studies based on rates expected in future experiments.
We comment on CP, T and CPT violation in the light of interesting new data from the CPLEAR and KTeV Collaborations on neutral kaon decay asymmetries. Other recent data from the CPLEAR experiment, constraining possible violations of CPT and the $ΔS = ΔQ$ rule, exclude the possibility that the semileptonic-decay asymmetry $A_{T}$ measured by CPLEAR could be solely due to CPT violation, confirming that their data constitute direct evidence for T violation. The CP-violating asymmetry in $K_L \to e^-e^+π^-π^+$ recently measured by the KTeV Collaboration does not by itself provide direct evidence fo…
Apparent violations of CPT and Lorentz symmetry might arise in nature as a result of spontaneous symmetry breaking in a theory beyond the standard model. This talk summarizes a few relevant theoretical and experimental issues, with some emphasis on implications for CPT tests with neutral-B mesons.
Spontaneous CPT breaking arising in string theory has been suggested as a possible observable experimental signature in neutral-meson systems. We provide a theoretical framework for the treatment of low-energy effects of spontaneous CPT violation and the attendant partial Lorentz breaking. The analysis is within the context of conventional relativistic quantum mechanics and quantum field theory in four dimensions. We use the framework to develop a CPT-violating extension to the minimal standard model that could serve as a basis for establishing quantitative CPT bounds.
Tilted brane in theories with large compact extra dimensions leads to spontaneous symmetry breaking of the Lorentz and rotational invariance in four dimensions, as shown by Dvali and Shifman. In this brief report, we point out that the mentioned Lorentz symmetry breaking, although leading to the CPT--violating interaction terms, cannot lead to the CPT violation in the experimentally interesting $K$--${\bar K}$ and analogous systems.
We review the recent confirmation of quantum entanglement in e+ e- collisions at the BELLE experiment at KEK-B in Japan with neutral B- mesons, and at the KLOE experiment at the DAFNE in Italy with neutral K- mesons. Such effects in the latter system seen already in proton-antiproton collisions by the CPLEAR experiment are also reviewed for purposes of comparison. In addition, the KLOE experiment provides new tests of the CPT theorem and are briefly discussed.
CPT violation has an impressive limit in the neutral kaon system |m(K^0) - m(\bar{K}^0)| < 10^{-18} m_K = 0.50 \times 10^{-18} GeV. However, if viewed as a constraint on the mass-squared, the bound appears weak, |m^2(K^0) - m^2(\bar{K}^0)| < 0.25 eV^2. We point out that neutrino oscillation offers better limits on CPT violation in this case. The comparison of solar and rector neutrino results puts the best limit on CPT violation by far, |Δm^2_ν- Δm^2_{\barν}| < 1.3 \times 10^{-3} eV^2 (90% CL).
Classical-mechanical oscillating systems are analyzed to model CP violating neutral kaon oscillations. Through the identification of the key features of the quantum effective hamiltonian we search for similarities in the characteristic matrix of the classical systems. Some no-go results are found for undamped systems and for systems using two one-dimensional coupled oscillators. A model is presented emulating both T and spontaneous CPT violation.
