The overall behavior of a 2D lattice of voids embedded in an anisotropic matrix is investigated in the limit of vanishing porosity f. An effective-medium model (of the Hashin-Shtrikman type) which accounts for elastic interactions between neighboring voids, is compared to Fast Fourier Transform numerical solutions and, in the limits of infinite anisotropy, to exact results. A cross-over between regular and singular dilute regimes is found, driven by a characteristic length which depends on f and on the anisotropy strength. The singular regime, where the leading dilute correction to the elastic moduli is an O(f^{1/2}), is related to strain localization and to change in character - from elliptic to hyperbolic - of the governing equations.
Exact solutions are derived for the problem of a two-dimensional, infinitely anisotropic, linear-elastic medium containing a periodic lattice of voids. The matrix material possesses either one infinitely soft, or one infinitely hard loading direction, which induces localized (singular) field configurations. The effective elastic moduli are computed as functions of the porosity in each case. Their dilute expansions feature half-integer powers of the porosity, which can be correlated to the localized field patterns. Statistical characterizations of the fields, such as their first moments and the…
Multifunctional polymer composites with anisotropic properties are attracting interests as they fulfil the growing demand of multitasking materials. In this work, anisotropic polymer composites are fabricated by combining the layer-by-layer (LBL) filtration method with the alternative assembling of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and hexagonal boron nitride flakes (hBN) on natural rubber latex particles (NR). The layered composites exhibit anisotropic thermal and electrical conductivities, which are tailored through the layer formulations. The best composite consists of four layers of NR modified with…
The exchange interaction between nanostructured components is an effective way to enhance the magnetic properties of materials. This effect is used in exchange-coupled magnetic composites, which properties are governed by synergetic impact of constituent phases. Texturing is one of the problems that needs to be solved in order for such composites to be used in industry. In this work, we performed experimental and micromagnetic investigation of the exchange-bias properties in Co/Co3O4 nanocomposites based on nanorods array. Specifically, we investigated how the resulting properties will change …
The in-plane anisotropy (IPA) of mechanical properties existed in plate products is often undesired since it limits the industrial application and increases the difficulty of material processing. It is thus one of the important factors which requires strict control during the manufacture of high-performance aluminum alloy plates. The anisotropic behavior of TiB2/2024Al composite rolling sheet under different heat treatment is studied in this article. T4 heat treated specimen shows good isotropy of yield strength and its texture components are significantly weakened compared with traditional Al…
An anisotropic equation of state (EOS) is proposed for the accurate extrapolation of high-pressure shock Hugoniot (anisotropic and isotropic) states to other thermodynamic (anisotropic and isotropic) states for a shocked carbon-fibre epoxy composite (CFC) of any symmetry. The proposed EOS, using a generalised decomposition of a stress tensor [Int. J. Plasticity \textbf{24}, 140 (2008)], represents a mathematical and physical generalisation of the Mie-Grüneisen EOS for isotropic material and reduces to this equation in the limit of isotropy. Although a linear relation between the generalised an…
An effective computational framework of an anisotropic phase field model is used to explore the effects of interface properties, effective critical energy release rates and hole shapes on the failure process of fibre-reinforced composites in this paper. In this framework, the phase field method is solved under the background of the finite element method, and the influence of strong and weak interfaces on the failure strength of composite materials is studied. The results show that when the material fails, the strong interface shows brittleness, and the weak interface shows toughness, which can…
Controlling anisotropy in self-assembled structures enables engineering of materials with highly directional response. Here, we harness the anisotropic growth of ice walls in a thermal gradient to assemble an anisotropic refractory metal structure, which is then infiltrated with Cu to make a composite. Using experiments and simulations, we demonstrate on the specific example of tungsten-copper composites the effect of anisotropy on the electrical and mechanical properties. The results are compared to isotropic tungsten-copper composites fabricated by standard powder metallurgical methods. Our …
Cloaking techniques conceal objects by controlling the flow of electromagnetic waves to minimize scattering. Herein, the effectiveness of homogenized anisotropic materials in non-resonant dielectric multilayer cloaking is studied. Because existing multilayer cloaking by isotropic materials can be regarded as homogenous anisotropic cloaking from a macroscopic view, anisotropic materials can be efficiently designed through optimization of their physical properties. Anisotropic properties can be realized in two-phase composites if the physical properties of the material are within appropriate bou…
On the effect of isotropic and anisotropic dissipative response functions with associated and non-associated flow on the inelastic behaviour of polymeric composites
When a suspension consisting of dielectric particles having nonlinear characteristics is subjected to a sinusoidal (ac) field, the electrical response will in general consist of ac fields at frequencies of the higher-order harmonics. These ac responses will also be anisotropic. In this work, a self-consistent formalism has been employed to compute the induced dipole moment for suspensions in which the suspended particles have nonlinear characteristics, in an attempt to investigate the anisotropy in the ac response. The results showed that the harmonics of the induced dipole moment and the loca…
This paper presents a combined numerical-theoretical study of the macroscopic behavior and local field distributions in a special class of two-dimensional periodic composites with viscoplastic phases. The emphasis is on strongly nonlinear materials containing pores or rigid inclusions. Full-field numerical simulations are carried out using a Fast-Fourier Transform algorithm [H. Moulinec, P. Suquet, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris II 318, 1417 (1994)], while the theoretical results are obtained by means of the `second-order' nonlinear homogenization method [P. Ponte Castaneda, J. Mech. Phys. Solids 50, …
In this paper, a multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model with an off-diagonal collision matrix was adopted to predict the effective thermal conductivities of the anisotropic heterogeneous materials whose components are also anisotropic. The half lattice division scheme was adopted to deal with the internal boundaries to guarantee the heat flux continuity at the interfaces. Accuracy of the model was confirmed by comparisons with benchmark results and existing simulation data. The present method was then adopted to numerically predict the transverse and longitudinal effective thermal co…
The nature of ordering in dilute dipolar interacting systems dates back to the work of Debye and is one of the most basic, oldest and as-of-yet unsettled problems in magnetism. While spin-glass order is readily observed in several RKKY-interacting systems, dipolar spin-glasses are subject of controversy and ongoing scrutiny, e.g., in ${{\rm LiHo_xY_{1-x}F_4}}$, a rare-earth randomly diluted uniaxial (Ising) dipolar system. In particular, it is unclear if the spin-glass phase in these paradigmatic materials persists in the limit of zero concentration or not. We study an effective model of ${{\r…
This article investigates the large deflection and post-buckling of composite plates by employing the Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF). As a consequence, the geometrically nonlinear governing equations and the relevant incremental equations are derived in terms of fundamental nuclei, which are invariant of the theory approximation order. By using the Lagrange expansion functions across the laminate thickness and the classical finite element (FE) approximation, layer-wise (LW) refined plate models are implemented. The Newton-Raphson linearization scheme with the path-following method based on …
The nature of the magnetism brought about by Fe adatoms on the surface of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 was examined in terms of density functional calculations. The Fe adatoms exhibit strong easy-axis magnetic anisotropy in the dilute adsorption limit due to the topological surface states (TSS). The spin exchange J between the Fe adatoms follows a Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) behavior with substantial anisotropy, and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction between them is quite strong with |D/J|~0.3 under the mediation by the TSS, and can be further raised to ~0.6 by an external…
We propose a simple yet effective method which allows one to attain large reversible shape changes in shape memory bimetallic composites without training procedure. It is based on the conservation of strongly anisotropic martensite microstructure artificially created in the shape memory layer. This procedure results in appearance of stress field when the shape memory layer is transformed to the austenitic state which brings about two-way shape memory effect. Utilization of this method for preparation of TiNi-based composite with a thickness of 60 μm allowed us to achieve 0.9% reversible bendin…
We investigate the interaction of two Mn ions in the dilute magnetic semiconductor GaMnAs using the variational envelope wave function approach within the framework of six band model of the valence band. We find that the effective interaction between the Mn core spins at a typical separation d is strongly anisotropic for active Mn concentrations less than x = 1.3%, but it is almost isotropic for shorter distances (d < 13A). As a result, in unannealed and strongly compensated samples strong frustration effects must be present. We also verify that an effective Hamiltonian description can be used…
Theoretical calculations of the elastic response of carbon composites and amorphous carbon are reported. The studied composites consist of crystalline nanoinclusions, either spherical diamonds or carbon nanotubes, embedded in amorphous carbon matrices. The elastic constants of the composites were calculated and found to systematically increase as the density increases. The elastic recovery under hydrostatic pressure for all structures was also investigated and was found to be significantly high for both nanocomposite and amorphous carbon, but decreases as the material becomes more dilute.
The atomistic simulations of carbon nanotube (CNT) - carbon reinforced composite material are reported. The studied composite samples were obtained by impregnating certain amounts of CNTs (3,3) and (6,6) into pristine graphite matrix. The addition of CNTs is found to be of significant usefulness for nanotube-reinforced carbon composites since it allows to achieve extreme lightness and strength. Being impregnated into graphite matrix, nanotubes are able to increase the critical component of its highly anisotropic Young modulus by 2-8 times. The linear thermal expansion coefficients do not excee…
A method is presented for approximating the effective conductivity of composite media with thin interphase regions, which is exact to first order in the interphase thickness. The approximations are computationally efficient in the sense the fields need to be computed only in a reference composite in which the interphases have been replaced by perfect interfaces. The results apply whether any two phases of the composite are separated by a single interphase or multiple interphases, whether the conductivities of the composite phases are isotropic or anisotropic, and whether the thickness of an in…
Modelling heat transfer of carbon nanotubes is important for the thermal management of nanotube-based composites and nanoelectronic device. By using a finite element method for three-dimensional anisotropic heat transfer, we have simulated the heat conduction and temperature variations of a single nanotube, a nanotube array and a part of nanotube-based composite surface with heat generation. The thermal conductivity used is obtained from the upscaled value from the molecular simulations or experiments. Simulations show that nanotube arrays have unique cooling characteristics due to its anisotr…
Theoretical Prediction of the Effective Dynamic Dielectric Constant of Disordered Hyperuniform Anisotropic Composites Beyond the Long-Wavelength Regime
Two different formalisms for the homogenization of composite materials containing ellipsoidal inclusions based on Bruggeman's original formula for spherical inclusions can be found in the literature. Both approximations determine the effective macroscopic permittivity of such an idealized composite assuming randomly distributed dielectric particles of equal shape and differ only in the definition of the depolarization factors. The two approaches are applied to analyze ellipsometric Mueller matrix spectra acquired in the visible and near-infrared spectral region from metal and semiconductor sla…
A prominent character of two-dimensional magnetic systems is the enhanced spin fluctuations, which however reduce the ordering temperature. Here we report that a magnetic field of only one-thousandth of the Heisenberg superexchange interaction can induce a crossover, which for practical purposes is the effective ordering transition, at temperatures about 6 times of the Neel transition in a site-diluted two-dimensional anisotropic quantum antiferromagnet. Such a strong magnetic response is enabled because the system directly enters the antiferromagnetically ordered state from the isotropic diso…
