We formulate and discuss two conjectures concerning recursive formulae for Branson's $Q$-curvatures. The proposed formulae describe all $Q$-curvatures on manifolds of all even dimensions in terms of respective lower order $Q$-curvatures and lower order GJMS-operators. They are universal in the dimension of the underlying space. The recursive formulae are generated by an algorithm which rests on the theory of residue families. We attempt to resolve the algorithm by formulating a conjectural description of the coefficients in the recursive formulae in terms of interpolation polynomials associated to compositions of natural numbers. We prove that the conjectures cover $Q_4$ and $Q_6$ for general metrics, and $Q_8$ for conformally flat metrics. The result for $Q_8$ is proved here for the first time. Moreover, we display explicit (conjectural) formulae for $Q$-curvatures of order up to 16, and test high order cases for round spheres and Einstein metrics.
We discover new monotonicity formulae for minimal submanifolds in space forms, which imply the sharp area bound for minimal submanifolds through a prescribed point in a geodesic ball. These monotonicity formulae involve an energy-like integral over sets which are, in general, not geodesic balls. In the Euclidean case, these sets reduce to the moving-centre balls introduced by the second author in [Zhu18].
We establish a new algebraic characterization of sectional curvature bounds $\sec\geq k$ and $\sec\leq k$ using only curvature terms in the Weitzenböck formulae for symmetric $p$-tensors. By introducing a symmetric analogue of the Kulkarni-Nomizu product, we provide a simple formula for such curvature terms. We also give an application of the Bochner technique to closed $4$-manifolds with indefinite intersection form and $\sec>0$ or $\sec\geq0$, obtaining new insights into the Hopf Conjecture, without any symmetry assumptions.
Integral formulae for foliated Riemannian manifolds provide obstructions for existence of foliations or compact leaves of them with given geometric properties. This paper continues our recent study and presents new integral formulae and their applications for codimension-one foliated Randers spaces. The goal is a generalization of Reeb's formula (that the total mean curvature of the leaves is zero) and its companion (that twice total second mean curvature of the leaves equals to the total Ricci curvature in the normal direction). We also extend results by Brito, Langevin and Rosenberg (that to…
We investigate geometric properties of surfaces given by certain formulae. In particular, we calculate the singular curvature and the limiting normal curvature of such surfaces along the set of singular points consisting of singular points of the first kind. Moreover, we study fold singular points of smooth maps.
We prove universal recursive formulas for Branson's $Q$-curvatures in terms of respective lower-order $Q$-curvatures, lower-order GJMS-operators and holographic coefficients.
The classical Minkowski formula is extended to spacelike codimension-two submanifolds in spacetimes which admit "hidden symmetry" from conformal Killing-Yano two-forms. As an application, we obtain an Alexandrov type theorem for spacelike codimension-two submanifolds in a static spherically symmetric spacetime: a codimension-two submanifold with constant normalized null expansion (null mean curvature) must lie in a shear-free (umbilical) null hypersurface. These results are generalized for higher order curvature invariants. In particular, the notion of mixed higher order mean curvature is intr…
We study extrinsic geometry of a codimension-one foliation ${\cal F}$ of a closed Finsler space $(M,F)$, in particular, of a Randers space $(M,α+β)$. Using a unit vector field $ν$ orthogonal (in the Finsler sense) to the leaves of ${\cal F}$ we define a new Riemannian metric $g$ on $M$, which for Randers case depends nicely on $(α,β)$. For that $g$ we derive several geometric invariants of ${\cal F}$ (e.g. the Riemann curvature and the shape operator) in terms of $F$, then under natural assumptions on $β$ which simplify derivations, we express them in terms of corresponding invariants arising …
In this paper we form relations for the determination of the elements of the Eötvös matrix of the Earth's normal gravity field. In addition a relation between the Gauss curvature of the normal equipotential surface and the Gauss curvature of the actual equipotential surface both passing through the point P is presented. For this purpose we use a global Cartesian system (X, Y, Z) and use the variables X, and Y to form a local parameterization a normal equipotential surface to describe its fundamental forms and the plumbline curvature. The first and second order partial derivatives of the normal…
For an embedded conformal hypersurface with boundary, we construct critical order local invariants and their canonically associated differential operators. These are obtained holographically in a construction that uses a singular Yamabe problem and a corresponding minimal hypersurface with boundary. They include an extrinsic Q-curvature for the boundary of the embedded conformal manifold and, for its interior, the Q-curvature and accompanying boundary transgression curvatures. This gives universal formulae for extrinsic analogs of Branson Q-curvatures that simultaneously generalize the Willmor…
Introducing a notion of the weighted mean sigma-r curvature and using the weighted Newton transformations we derive in this paper some integral formulae on weighted manifolds. These formulae generalize the flux formula and some of its examples of applications obtained by Alias, de Lira and Malacarne [3].
The study of curvature properties of homogeneous Finsler spaces with $(α, β)$-metrics is one of the central problems in Riemann-Finsler geometry. In this paper, we consider homogeneous Finsler spaces with square metric and Randers change of square metric. First, we derive the explicit formulae for Ricci curvature of homogeneous Finsler spaces with these metrics. Next, we find a necessary and sufficient condition under which a homogeneous Finsler space with either of these metrics is of vanishing $S$-curvature. The formulae for Ricci curvature of homogeneous Finsler spaces with square metric an…
We present some formulae related to the Chern-Ricci curvatures and scalar curvatures of special Hermitian metrics. We prove that a compact locally conformal Kähler manifold with constant nonpositive holomorphic sectional curvature is Kähler. We also give examples of complete non-Kähler metrics with pointwise negative constant but not globally constant holomorphic sectional curvature, and complete non-Kähler metric with zero holomorphic sectional curvature and nonvanishing curvature tensor.
Patterson discussed the curvature identities on Riemannian manifolds in [14], and a curvature identity for any 6-dimensional Riemannian manifold was independently derived from the Chern-Gauss-Bonnet Theorem [8]. In this paper, we provide the explicit formulae of Patterson's curvature identity that holds on 5-dimensional and 6-dimensional Einstein manifolds. We confirm that the curvature identities on the Einstein manifold from the previous work [8] are the same as the curvature identities deduced from Patterson's result. We also provide examples that support the theorems.
We introduce higher order mean curvatures of screen almost conformal (SAC) half-lightlike submanifolds of indefinite contact manifolds, admitting a semi-symmetric non-metric connection, and use them to generalize some known results of [6]. Also, we derive a new set of integration formulae via the divergence of some special vector fields tangent to this submanifold. Several examples are also included to illustrate the main concepts.
We prove a universal recursive formulas for Branson's $Q$-curvature of order eight in terms of lower-order $Q$-curvatures, lower-order GJMS-operators and holographic coefficients. The results prove a special case of a conjecture in {arXiv:0905.3992}.
We study Einstein metrics on smooth compact 4-manifolds with an edge-cone singularity of specified cone angle along an embedded 2-manifold. To do so, we first derive modified versions of the Gauss-Bonnet and signature theorems for arbitrary Riemannian 4-manifolds with edge-cone singularities, and then show that these yield non-trivial obstructions in the Einstein case. We then use these integral formulae to obtain interesting information regarding gravitational instantons which arise as limits of such edge-cone manifolds.
For the Möbius spheres $S^{q,p}$, we give alternative elementary proofs of the recursive formulas for GJMS-operators and $Q$-curvatures due to the first author [Geom. Funct. Anal. 23, (2013), 1278-1370; arXiv:1108.0273]. These proofs make essential use of the theory of hypergeometric series.
We first prove stochastic representation formulae for space-time harmonic mappings defined on manifolds with evolving Riemannian metric. We then apply these formulae to derive Liouville type theorems under appropriate curvature conditions. Space-time harmonic mappings which are defined globally in time correspond to ancient solutions to the harmonic map heat flow. As corollaries, we establish triviality of such ancient solutions in a variety of different situations.
In this paper we study the problem of uniqueness for spacelike hypersurfaces with constant higher order mean curvature in generalized Robertson-Walker (GRW) spacetimes. In particular, we consider the following question: Under what conditions must a compact spacelike hypersurface with constant higher order mean curvature in a spatially closed GRW spacetime be a spacelike slice? We prove that this happens, esentially, under the so called convergence condition. Our approach is based on the use of the Newton transformations (and their associated differential operators) and the Minkowski formulae f…
We propose and discuss recursive formulas for conformally covariant powers $P_{2N}$ of the Laplacian (GJMS-operators). For locally conformally flat metrics, these describe the non-constant part of any GJMS-operator as the sum of a certain linear combination of compositions of lower order GJMS-operators (primary part) and a second-order operator which is defined by the Schouten tensor (secondary part). We complete the description of GJMS-operators by proposing and discussing recursive formulas for their constant terms, i.e., for Branson's $Q$-curvatures, along similar lines. We confirm the pict…
Let $X$ be a complex manifold, $(E,h)\to X$ be a rank $r$ holomorphic hermitian vector bundle, and $ρ$ be a sequence of dimensions $0 = ρ_0 < ρ_1 < \cdots < ρ_m = r$. Let $Q_{ρ,j}$, $j=1,\dots,m$, be the tautological line bundles over the (possibly incomplete) flag bundle $\mathbb{F}_ρ(E) \to X$ associated to $ρ$, endowed with the natural metrics induced by that of $E$, with Chern curvatures $Ξ_{ρ,j}$. We show that the universal Gysin formula \textsl{à la} Darondeau--Pragacz for the push-forward of a homogeneous polynomial in the Chern classes of the $Q_{ρ,j}$'s also hold pointwise at the leve…
