Material specific electronic band structure of the electron-doped high-Tc cuprate Nd(1.85)Ce(0.15)CuO(4) (NCCO) is calculated within the pseudo gap regime, using the recently developed generalized LDA+DMFT+Sigma_k scheme. LDA/DFT (density functional theory within local density approximation) provides model parameters (hopping integral values, local Coulomb interaction strength) for the one-band Hubbard model, which is solved by DMFT (dynamical mean-field theory). To take into account pseudogap fluctuations LDA+DMFT is supplied with "external" k-dependent self-energy Sigma_k, which describes interaction of correlated conducting electrons with non-local Heisenberg-like antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations responsible for pseudo gap formation. Within this LDA+DMFT+Sigma_k approach we demonstrate the formation of pronounced "hot-spots" on the Fermi surface (FS) map in NCCO, opposite to our recent calculations for Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8-d) (Bi2212), which have produced rather extended region of FS "destruction". There are several physical reasons for this fact: (i) the "hot-spots" in NCCO are located closer to Brillouin zone center; (ii) correlation length of AFM fluctuations ξis larger for NCCO; (iii) pseudogap potential Δis stronger, than in Bi2212. Comparison of our theoretical data with recent bulk sensitive high-energy angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) data for NCCO provides good semiquantitative agreement. Based on that comparison alternative explanation of the van-Hove singularity at -0.3 eV is proposed. Optical conductivity both for Bi2212 and NCCO is also calculated within LDA+DMFT+Sigma_k and compared with experimental results, demonstrating satisfactory agreement.
The electronic spectral function of BaNi$_2$As$_2$ is investigated using both the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and a combined computational scheme of local density approximation together with dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT). In contrast to well studied isostructural iron arsenide high temperature superconductors, the BaNi$_2$As$_2$ demonstrate weak correlation effects although Ni-3d elections have even lager on-site interaction than Fe-3d ones. LDA+DMFT effective mass enhancement for bands crossing the Fermi level is found to be only about $1.2$ which agrees well wi…
$α$-FeSe, a prototype iron-chalcogenide superconductor, shows clear signatures of a strange incoherent normal state. Motivated thereby, we use LDA+DMFT to show how strong multi-band correlations generate a low-energy pseudogap in the normal state, giving an incoherent metal in very good semi-quantitative agreement with observations. We interpret our results in terms of $α$-FeSe being close to Mottness. A wide range of anomalous responses in the "normal" state are consistently explained, lending strong support for this view. Implications for superconductivity arising from such an anomalous stat…
Pseudogap regime for the prototype high-Tc compounds hole doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8-x (Bi2212) and electron doped Nd2-xCexCuO4 (NCCO) is described by means of novel generalized LDA+DMFT+Sk approach. Here conventional dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) equations are supplied with additional (momentum dependent) self-energy Sk. In the present case Sk describes non-local dynamical correlations induced by short-ranged collective Heisenberg-like antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. Material specific model parameters of two neighboring CuO2 layers of Bi2212 and single CuO2 layer of NCCO were obtained with…
We present a consistent way of treating a double counting problem unavoidably arising within the LDA+DMFT combined approach to realistic calculations of electronic structure of strongly correlated systems. The main obstacle here is the absence of systematic (e.g. diagrammatic) way to express LDA (local density approximation) contribution to exchange correlation energy appearing in the density functional theory. It is not clear then, which part of interaction entering DMFT (dynamical mean-field theory) is already taken into account through LDA calculations. Because of that, up to now there is n…
We discuss the recently proposed LDA'+DMFT approach providing consistent parameter free treatment of the so called double counting problem arising within the LDA+DMFT hybrid computational method for realistic strongly correlated materials. In this approach the local exchange-correlation portion of electron-electron interaction is excluded from self consistent LDA calculations for strongly correlated electronic shells, e.g. d-states of transition metal compounds. Then the corresponding double counting term in LDA+DMFT Hamiltonian is consistently set in the local Hartree (fully localized limit -…
Slightly underdoped high-Tc system La(1.86)Sr(0.14)CuO(4) (LSCO) is studied by means of high energy high resolution angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and combined computational scheme LDA+DMFT+Sk. Corresponding one band Hubbard model is solved via dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), while model parameters needed are obtained from first principles within local density approximation (LDA). An "external" k-dependent self-energy Sk describes interaction of correlated electrons with antiferromagnetic (AFM) pseudogap fluctuations. Experimental and theoretical data clearly show "des…
While the traditional local-density approximation (LDA) cannot describe Mott insulators, {\it ab-initio} determination of the Hubbard $U$, for example, limits LDA-plus dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) approaches. Here, we attempt to overcome these bottlenecks by achieving fusion of the quantum chemistry (QC) approach with DMFT. QC+DMFT supplants the LDA bandstructure by its QC counterpart as an input to DMFT. Using QC+DMFT, we show that undoped $La_{2}CuO_{4}$ is a $d$-Mott insulator, and qualitatively discuss the circulating current- and incoherent metal phase, at small but finite hole dopi…
We have implemented the $GW$+dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) approach in the Vienna ab initio simulation package. Employing the interaction values obtained from the locally unscreened random phase approximation (RPA), we compare $GW$+DMFT and LDA+DMFT against each other and against experiment for SrVO$_3$. We observed a partial compensation of stronger electronic correlations due to the reduced $GW$ bandwidth and weaker correlations due to a larger screening of the RPA interaction, so that the obtained spectra are quite similar and well agree with experiment. Noteworthily, the $GW$+DMFT bet…
The LDA+DMFT approach merges conventional band structure theory in the local density approximation (LDA) with a state-of-the-art many-body technique, the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). This new computational scheme has recently become a powerful tool for ab initio investigations of real materials with strong electronic correlations. In this paper an introduction to the basic ideas and the set-up of the LDA+DMFT approach is given. Results for the photoemission spectra of the transition metal oxide La_{1-x}Sr_xTiO_3, obtained by solving the DMFT-equations by quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) simula…
We present the results of extended theoretical LDA+DMFT calculations for a new iron-pnictide high temperature superconductor NaFeAs compared with the recent high quality angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) experiments on this system [1]. The universal manifestation of correlation effects in iron-pnictides is narrowing of conducting bands near the Fermi level. Our calculations demonstrate that for NaFeAs the effective mass is renormalized on average by a factor of the order of 3, in good agreement with ARPES data. This is essentially due to correlation effects on Fe-3d orbitals only and no add…
To describe pseudogap regime in Bi2212 we employ novel generalized ab initio LDA+DMFT+Sigma_k hybrid scheme. This scheme is based on the strategy of one of the most powerfull computational tool for real correlated materials LDA+DMFT. Here the LDA+DMFT equations are supplied by an additional (momentum dependent) self-energy Sigma_k in the spirit of our recently proposed DMFT+Sigma_k approach, accounting for pseudogap fluctuations. In the present model Sigma_k describes non-local correlations induced by short-ranged collective Heisenberg-like antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. The effective si…
We present an ab initio quantum theory of the metal-insulator transition in Ti$_2$O$_3$. The recently developed cluster LDA+DMFT scheme is applied to describe the many-body features of this compound. The conventional single site DMFT cannot reproduce a low temperature insulating phase for any reasonable values of the Coulomb interaction. We show that the non-local Coulomb interactions and the strong chemical bonding within Ti-Ti pair is the origin of the small gap insulating ground state of Ti$_2$O$_3$.
LDA+DMFT, the merger of density functional theory in the local density approximation and dynamical mean-field theory, has been mostly employed to calculate k-integrated spectra accessible by photoemission spectroscopy. In this paper, we calculate k-resolved spectral functions by LDA+DMFT. To this end, we employ the Nth order muffin-tin (NMTO) downfolding to set up an effective low-energy Hamiltonian with three t_2g orbitals. This downfolded Hamiltonian is solved by DMFT yielding k-dependent spectra. Our results show renormalized quasiparticle bands over a broad energy range from -0.7 eV to +0.…
In this paper, we propose an efficient implementation of combining Dynamical Mean field theory (DMFT) with electronic structure calculation based on the local density approximation (LDA). The pseudo-potential-plane-wave method is used in the LDA part, which makes it possible to be applied to large systems. The full loop self consistency of the charge density has been reached in our implementation which allows us to compute the total energy related properties. The procedure of LDA+DMFT is introduced in detail with a complete flow chart. We have also applied our code to study the electronic stru…
We present an ab initio quantum theory of the finite temperature magnetism of iron and nickel. A recently developed technique which combines dynamical mean-field theory with realistic electronic structure methods, successfully describes the many-body features of the one electron spectra and the observed magnetic moments below and above the Curie temperature.
I present a critical overview of so-called "{\it ab initio}" DFT (density fuctional theory) based calculation schemes for the description of the electronic structure, energy spectrum, and optical response for strongly correlated 3$d$ oxides, in particular, crystal-field and charge transfer transitions as compared with an "old"\, cluster model that does generalize crystal-field and ligand-field theory. As a most instructive illustration of validity of numerous calculation techniques I address the prototypical 3$d$ insulator NiO predicted to be a metal in frames of a standard LDA (local density …
The electronic properties of paramagnetic V_2O_3 are investigated by the ab-initio computational scheme LDA+DMFT(QMC). This approach merges the local density approximation (LDA) with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) and uses numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations (QMC) to solve the effective Anderson impurity model of DMFT. Starting with the crystal structure of metallic V_2O_3 and insulating (V_{0.962}Cr_{0.038})_2O_3 we find a Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator-like transition at a Coulomb interaction U\approx 5eV. The calculated spectrum is in very good agreement with experiment. Fur…
In this paper we provide theoretical LDA+DMFT support of recent ARPES experimental observation of the so called hidden hole like band and corresponding hidden Fermi surface sheet near $Γ$-point in the K$_{0.62}$Fe$_{1.7}$Se$_2$ compound. To some extent this is a solution to the long-standing riddle of Fermi surface absence around $Γ$-point in the K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ class of iron chalcogenide superconductors. In accordance with the experimental data Fermi surface was found near the $Γ$-point within LDA+DMFT calculations. Based on the LDA+DMFT analysis in this paper it is shown that the large…
The spectral properties of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$TiO$_{3}$, a doped Mott insulator with strong Coulomb correlations, are calculated with the ab initio computational scheme LDA+DMFT(QMC). It starts from the non-interacting electronic band structure as calculated by the local density approximation (LDA), and introduces the missing correlations by the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), using numerically exact quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) techniques to solve the resulting self-consistent multi-band single-impurity problem. The results of the LDA+DMFT(QMC) approach for the photoemission spectra of La$_{1…

An intrinsic issue of the LDA+DMFT approach is the so called double counting of interaction terms. How to choose the double-counting potential in a manner that is both physically sound and consistent is unknown. We have conducted an extensive study of the charge transfer system NiO in the LDA+DMFT framework using quantum Monte Carlo and exact diagonalization as impurity solvers. By explicitly treating the double-counting correction as an adjustable parameter we systematically investigated the effects of different choices for the double counting on the spectral function. Different methods for f…
To investigate the x-ray absorption (XAS) branching ratio from the core 4d to valence 5f states, we set up a theoretical framework by using a combination of density functional theory in the local density approximation and Dynamical Mean Field Theory (LDA+DMFT), and apply it to several actinides. The results of the LDA+DMFT reduces to the band limit for itinerant systems and to the atomic limit for localized f electrons, meaning a spectrum of 5f itinerancy can be investigated. Our results provides a consistent and unified view of the XAS branching ratio for all elemental actinides, and is in go…
We investigate electronic structure of the new iron chalcogenide high temperature superconductor K{1-x}Fe{2-y}Se2 (hole doped case with x=0.24, y=0.28) in the normal phase using the novel LDA'+DMFT computational approach. We show that this iron chalcogenide is more correlated in a sense of bandwidth renormalization (energy scale compression by factor about 5 in the interval +/-1.5 eV), than typical iron pnictides (compression factor about 2), though the Coulomb interaction strength is almost the same in both families. Our results for spectral densities are in general agreement with recent ARPE…
We present a computational study of 2$p$ core-level X-ray photoemission spectra of transition metal monoxides MO (M=Ni, Co, Mn) and sesquioxides M$_2$O$_3$ (M=V, Cr, Fe) using a theoretical framework based on the local-density approximation (LDA) $+$ dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). We find a very good description of the fine spectral features, which improves considerably over the conventional cluster model. We analyze the role of the non-local screening and its relationship to the long-range magnetic order and the lattice geometry. Our results reveal the potential of the present method for…
The valence-band spectrum of the ferromagnetic nickel is calculated using the LDA+DMFT method. The auxiliary impurity model emerging in the course of the calculations is discretized and solved with the exact diagonalization, or, more precisely, with the Lanczos method. Particular emphasis is given to spin dependence of the valence-band satellite that is observed around 6 eV below the Fermi level. The calculated satellite is strongly spin polarized in accord with experimental findings.
The magnetic properties of Ce in the $α$ and $γ$ phase are calculated within the LDA+DMFT approach. The magnetic susceptibility in these two phases shows a similar behavior over a wide temperature range: a Curie-Weiss law at high temperatures, indicating the presence of local moments, followed by a maximum in a crossover regime, and a saturation characteristic of a state with screened local moments at low temperature. The difference in experimentally observable magnetic properties is caused by the shift of the susceptibility to higher temperatures in the $α-$phase compared to the $γ-$phase, du…
We present a joint implementation of dynamical-mean-field theory (DMFT) with the pseudopotential plane-wave approach, via Wannier functions, for the determination of the electronic properties of strongly correlated materials. The scheme uses, as input for the DMFT calculations, a tight-binding Hamiltonian obtained from the plane-wave calculations by projecting onto atomic-centered symmetry-constrained Wannier functions for the correlated orbitals. We apply this scheme to two prototype systems: a paramagnetic correlated metal, SrVO3, and a paramagnetic correlated system, V2O3, which exhibits a …
Based on recent experiments, we describe the Mott insulating, but undimerized state of $TiOCl$ using the local-density approximation combined with multi-orbital dynamical mean field theory (LDA+DMFT) for this $3d^{1}$ system.Good agreement with the high estimated value of the superexchange is obtained. The possibility of an electron-doped insulator-metal transition in $TiOCl$ is investigated in this scheme and a Mott-Hubbard transition with a jump in carrier density {\it inside} the metallic state is found. Clear, co-incident, discontinuous changes in orbital occupations are observed, showing …
The emergence of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) made it possible to observe electronic dispersion directly as a spectral function map. On the other hand, a spectral function map can be obtained theoretically, for example, in the LDA+DMFT method. The electronic band on such a map is characterized not only by its energy position at a given $k$-point, but also by its width and intensity. To illustrate a way of quantitative comparison of theoretical spectral functions and ARPES data, spectral functions obtained by the LDA+DMFT method are chosen. It is shown that the theoretical …
In the present work we report the band structure calculations for the high temperature superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ in the regime of strong electronic correlations within an LDA+GTB method, which combines the local density approximation (LDA) and the generalized tight-binding method (GTB). The two mechanisms of band structure doping dependence were taken into account. Namely, the one-electron mechanism provided by the doping dependence of the crystal structure, and the many-body mechanism provided by the strong renormalization of the fermionic quasiparticles due to the large on-site …
We implemented combination of DMFT and $GW$ in its fully self-consistent way, one shot $GW$ approximation, and quasiparticle self-consistent scheme, and studied how well these combined methods perform on H$_2$ molecule as compared to more established methods such as LDA+DMFT. We found that most flavors of $GW$+DMFT break down in strongly correlated regime due to causality violation. Among $GW$+DMFT methods, only the self-consistent quasiparticle $GW$+DMFT with static double-counting, and a new method with causal double-counting, correctly recover the atomic limit at large H-atom separation. Wh…
We present a computational study of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and x-ray absorption in a representative rare-earth nickelate LuNiO$_3$. We study the changes in the spectra across the metal-insulator/site-disproportionation transition. In particular, we address the question of site-selectivity of the two methods in the disproportionated insulating phase and the signature of metal-insulator transition in the fluorescence-like feature of the RIXS spectra. To this end we use the local density approximation + dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) approach combined with configuratio…
The LDA+DMFT method is a very powerful tool for gaining insight into the physics of strongly correlated materials. It combines traditional ab-initio density-functional techniques with the dynamical mean-field theory. The core aspects of the method are (i) building material-specific Hubbard-like many-body models and (ii) solving them in the dynamical mean-field approximation. Step (i) requires the construction of a localized one-electron basis, typically a set of Wannier functions. It also involves a number of approximations, such as the choice of the degrees of freedom for which many-body effe…
We present a computational study of $L$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) in correlated 3$d$ transition-metal oxides using an $ab$ $initio$ method based on local density approximation + dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The present method, building on Anderson impurity model with an optimized continuum bath within DMFT, is an extension of the cluster model to include unbound electron-hole pair excitations as well as material-specific charge-transfer excitations with less empirical parameters. We find a good agreement with available experimental data. The relationship between co…
The electron-doped Pr(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4) (PCCO) compound in the pseudogap regime (x~0.15) was investigated using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and the generalized dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) with the k-dependent self-energy (LDA+DMFT+Σ_k). Model parameters (hopping integral values and local Coulomb interaction strength) for the effective one-band Hubbard model were calculated by the local density approximation (LDA) with numerical renormalization group method (NRG) employed as an "impurity solver" in DMFT computations. An "external" k-dependent self-energy Σ_k was used …
We show that evolution of magnetic properties in FeS under pressure cannot be explained only in terms of a spin state transition. While uniform compression does show substantial suppression of the local magnetic moment and increase of the weights of configurations with low spin, analysis of the local spin-spin correlation function demonstrates increase of the spin itinerancy. This is related to a strong modification of the electronic structure under pressure: in the high-pressure phase FeS is in the Fermi-liquid state, while decrease of the pressure moves the system to an orbital-selective reg…
We study $1s$ and $2p$ hard x-ray photoemission spectra (XPS) in a series of late transition metal oxides: Fe$_2$O$_3$ (3$d^{5}$), FeTiO$_3$ (3$d^{6}$), CoO (3$d^{7}$) and NiO (3$d^{8}$). The experimental spectra are analyzed with two theoretical approaches: the MO$_6$ cluster model and the local density approximation (LDA) + dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). Owing to the absence of the core-valence multiplets and spin-orbit coupling, 1$s$ XPS is found to be a sensitive probe of chemical bonding and nonlocal charge-transfer screening, providing complementary information to 2$p$ XPS. The 1$s$…
LDA+DMFT is a novel computational technique for ab initio investigations of real materials with strongly correlated electrons, such as transition metals and their oxides. It combines the strength of conventional band structure theory in the local density approximation (LDA) with a modern many-body approach, the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). In the last few years LDA+DMFT has proved to be a powerful tool for the realistic modeling of strongly correlated electronic systems. In this paper the basic ideas and the set-up of the LDA+DMFT(X) approach, where X is the method used to solve the DMF…
Ab initio calculation of the electronic properties of materials is a major challenge for solid state theory. Whereas the experience of forty years has proven density functional theory (DFT) in a suitable, e.g. local approximation (LDA) to give a satisfactory description in case electronic correlations are weak, materials with strongly correlated, say d- or f-electrons remain a challenge. Such materials often exhibit colossal responses to small changes of external parameters such as pressure, temperature, and magnetic field, and are therefore most interesting for technical applications. Encoura…
The merger of density-functional theory in the local density approximation (LDA) and many-body dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) allows for an ab initio calculation of Ce including the inherent 4f electronic correlations. We solve the DMFT equations by the quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) technique and calculate the Ce energy, spectrum, and double occupancy as a function of volume. At low temperatures, the correlation energy exhibits an anomalous region of negative curvature which drives the system towards a thermodynamic instability, i.e., the $γ$-to-$α$ volume collapse, consistent with experiment.…
Effects of Coulomb correlation on LaOFeAs electronic structure have been investigated by LDA+DMFT(QMC) method. The calculation results show that LaOFeAs is in the regime of intermediate correlation strength with significant part of the spectral density moved from the Fermi energy to Hubbard bands. However the system is not on the edge of metal insulator-transition because increase of the Coulomb interaction parameter value from $U$=4.0 eV to $U$=5.0 eV did not result in insulator state. Correlations affect different d-orbitals not in the same way. $t_{2g}$ states ($xz,yz$ and $x^2-y^2$ orbital…
LDA+DMFT+Sigma_k approach was applied to describe pseudogap phase of several prototype high-Tc compounds e.g. hole doped Bi2212 and LSCO systems and electron doped NCCO and PCCO, demonstrating qualitative difference of the Fermi surfaces (FS) for these systems. Namely for Bi2212 and LSCO the so called "hot-spots" (intersection of a bare FS and AFM Brillouin zone (BZ) boundary), where scattering on pseudogap fluctuations is most intensive were not observed. Instead here we have Fermi arcs with smeared FS close to the BZ boundary. However for NCCO and PCCO "hot-spots" are clearly visible. This q…
The electronic spectrum, energy gap and local magnetic moment of paramagnetic NiO are computed by using the local density approximation plus dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT). To this end the noninteracting Hamiltonian obtained within the local density approximation (LDA) is expressed in Wannier functions basis, with only the five anti-bonding bands with mainly Ni 3d character taken into account. Complementing it by local Coulomb interactions one arrives at a material-specific many-body Hamiltonian which is solved by DMFT together with quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) simulations. The large insu…
Motivated by recent core-level x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments for the newly-discovered superconducting infinite-layer nickelate, we investigate the core-level spectra of the parent compounds NdNiO$_2$ and LaNiO$_2$ using the combination of local density approximation and dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT). Adjusting a charge-transfer energy to match the experimental spectra, we determine the optimal model parameters and discuss the nature of the NdNiO$_2$ ground state. We find that self-…
Recent experimental observations of magnetization plateau in metallic tetraboride $\textrm{TmB}_{4}$ have created a lot of interest in these class of materials. Hysteretic longitudinal resistance and anomalous Hall Effect are other remarkable features in the rare-earth tetraborides which represent experimental realizations of Archimedean Shastry-Sutherland (SSL) lattice. Electronic band structures, calculated under GGA and GGA+SO approximations, show that $\textrm{TmB}_{4}$ is a narrow band system with considerable correlation in its f-level. Strong correlation effects in this system are studi…
Dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) combined with the local density approximation (LDA) is widely used in solids to predict properties of correlated systems. In this paper, its application to one of the simplest strongly correlated systems, the hydrogen molecule H$_2$, is demonstrated to develop a parameter-free LDA+DMFT framework. We propose a method to calculate the exact intersection of LDA and DMFT that leads to highly accurate subtraction of the doubly counted correlation in both methods. When the exact double-counting treatment and a good projector to the correlated subspace are used, LDA…
The new challenges posed by the need of finding strong rare-earth free magnets demand methods that can predict magnetization and magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE). We argue that correlated electron effects, which are normally underestimated in band structure calculations, play a crucial role in the development of the orbital component of the magnetic moments. Because magnetic anisotropy arises from this orbital component, the ability to include correlation effects has profound consequences on our predictive power of the MAE of strong magnets. Here we show that incorporating the local …
We present detailed LDA'+DMFT investigation of doping dependence of correlation effects in novel K{1-x}Fe{2-y}Se2 superconductor. Calculations were performed at four different hole doping levels, starting from hypothetical stoichiometric composition with total number of electrons equal to 29 per unit cell through 28 and 27.2 electrons towards the case of 26.52, which corresponds to chemical composition K{0.76}Fe{1.72}Se2 studied in recent ARPES experiments. In general case the increase of hole doping leads to quasiparticle bands in wide energy window +/-2 eV around the Fermi level becoming mor…
The puzzling absence of Pu magnetic moments in a PuAm environment is explored using the self-consistent Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) calculations in combination with the Local Density Approximation. We argue that delta-Pu -Am alloys provide an ideal test bed for investigating the screening of moments from the single impurity limit to the dense limit. Several important effects can be studied: volume expansion, shift of the bare Pu on-site f energy level, and the reduction of the hybridization cloud resulting from the collective character of the Kondo effect in the Anderson lattice. These …
In this Letter we report the first LDA+DMFT results (method combining Local Density Approximation with Dynamical Mean-Field Theory) for spectral properties of superconductor LaFePO. Calculated {\bf k}-resolved spectral functions reproduce recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data [D. H. Lu {\it et al}., Nature {\bf 455}, 81 (2008)]. Obtained effective electron mass enhancement values $m^{*}/m\approx$ 1.9 -- 2.2 are in good agreement with infrared and optical studies [M. M. Qazilbash {\it et al}., Nature Phys. {\bf 5}, 647 (2009)], de Haas--van Alphen, electrical resistivity…
Recent density functional theory (DFT) calculations for KFe2As2 have shown to be insufficient to satisfactorily describe angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements as well as observed de Haas van Alphen (dHvA) frequencies. In the present work, we extend DFT calculations based on the full-potential linear augmented plane-wave method by dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT) to include correlation effects beyond the local density approximation. Our results indicate that KFe2As2 is a moderately correlated metal with a mass renormalization factor of the Fe 3d orbitals between 1.6 and 2.7. A…
The electronic structure of the Cr(001) surface with its sharp resonance at the Fermi level is a subject of controversial debate of many experimental and theoretical works. To date, it is unclear whether the origin of this resonance is an orbital Kondo or an electron-phonon coupling effect. We have combined ab initio density functional calculations with dynamical mean-field simulations to calculate the orbitally resolved spectral function of the Cr(001) surface. The calculated orbital character and shape of the spectrum is in agreement with data from (inverse) photoemission experiments. We fin…
Materials with correlated electrons often respond very strongly to external or internal influences, leading to instabilities and states of matter with broken symmetry. This behavior can be studied theoretically either by evaluating the linear response characteristics, or by simulating the ordered phases of the materials under investigation. We developed the necessary tools within the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) to search for electronic instabilities in materials close to spin-state crossovers and to analyze the properties of the corresponding ordered states. This investigation, motivate…
For technical applications thermoelectric materials with a high figure of merit are desirable, and strongly correlated electron systems are very promising in this respect. Since effects of bandstructure_and_ electronic correlations play an important role for getting large figure of merits, the combination of local density approximation_and_ dynamical mean field theory is an ideal tool for the computational materials design of new thermoelectrics as well as to help us understand the mechanisms leading to large figures of merits in certain materials. This conference proceedings provides for a br…
The calculation of electronic properties of materials is an important task of solid state theory, albeit particularly difficult if electronic correlations are strong, for example in transition metals, their oxides and in f-electron systems. The standard approach to material calculations, the density functional theory in its local density approximation (LDA), incorporates electronic correlations only very rudimentarily and fails if the correlations are strong. Encouraged by the success of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) in dealing with strongly correlated model Hamiltonians, physicists from …
Using ab-initio methods for correlated electrons in solids, we investigate the metal-insulator transition across the Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) series of iridates and explore the robustness of the J_eff=1/2 state against band effects due to itineracy, tetragonal distortion, octahedral rotation and Coulomb interaction. We predict the effects of epitaxial strain on the optical conductivity, magnetic moments, and J_eff=1/2 ground-state wave functions in the RP series. To describe the solution of the many-body problem in an intuitive picture, we introduce a concept of energy-dependent atomic states, w…
We present a combination of local density approximation (LDA) with the dynamical cluster approximation (LDA+DCA) in the framework of the full-potential linear augmented plane-wave method, and compare our LDA+DCA results for SrVO$_3$ to LDA with the dynamical mean field theory (LDA+DMFT) calculations as well as experimental observations on SrVO$_3$. We find a qualitative agreement of the momentum resolved spectral function with angle-resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) and former LDA+DMFT results. As a correction to LDA+DMFT, we observe more pronounced coherent peaks below the Fermi level, a…
A novel hybrid scheme is proposed. The {\it ab initio} LDA calculation is used to construct the Wannier functions and obtain single electron and Coulomb parameters of the multiband Hubbard-type model. In strong correlation regime the electronic structure within multiband Hubbard model is calculated by the Generalized Tight-Binding (GTB) method, that combines the exact diagonalization of the model Hamiltonian for a small cluster (unit cell) with perturbation treatment of the intercluster hopping and interactions. For undoped La$_2$CuO$_4$ and Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ this scheme results in charge transfer…
The electronic structure and magnetic properties of a single Fe adatom on a CuN surface have been studied using density functional theory in the local spin density approximation (LSDA), the LSDA+U approach and the local density approximation plus dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT). The impurity problem in LDA+DMFT is solved through exact diagonalization and in the Hubbard-I approximation. The comparison of the one-particle spectral functions obtained from LSDA, LSDA+U and LDA+DMFT show the importance of dynamical correlations for the electronic structure of this system. Most importantly, w…
Typical density-functional theory calculations that wrongly predict undoped cuprates to be metallic also predict Cu-O half- and full-breathing phonon energies that are significantly softer than observed, presumably because of weak on-site Coulomb repulsion on the Cu 3d orbitals. We used DFT+U calculations with antiferromagnetic supercells of La$_2$CuO$_4$ to establish correlation between the on-site repulsion strength, tuned via adjusting the value of U, and phonon dispersions. We find that breathing and half-breathing phonons reach experimental values when U is tuned to obtain the correct opt…
