Recent experimental studies on the instability appearance of capillary jets have revealed the capabilities of linear spatiotemporal instability analysis to predict the parametrical map where steady jetting or dripping takes place. In this work, we present an extensive analytical, numerical and experimental analysis of confined capillary jets extending previous studies. We propose an extended, accurate analytic model in the limit of low Reynolds flows, and introduce a numerical scheme to predict the system response when the liquid inertia is not negligible. Theoretical predictions show a remarkable accuracy with results from the extensive experimental exploration provided.
Step-emulsification is a microfluidic technique for droplet generation which relies on the abrupt decrease of confinement of a liquid filament surrounded by a continuous phase. A striking feature of this geometry is the transition between two distinct droplet breakup regimes, the "step-regime" and "jet-regime", at a critical capillary number. In the step-regime, small and monodisperse droplets break off from the filament directly at a topographic step, while in the jet-regime a jet protrudes into the larger channel region and large plug-like droplets are produced. We characterize the breakup b…
We review here the physics of capillary condensation of liquids in confined media, with a special regard to the application in nanotechnologies. The thermodynamics of capillary condensation and thin film adsorption are first exposed along with all the relevant notions. The focus is then shifted to the modelling of capillary forces, to their measurements techniques (including SFA, AFM and crack tips) and to their influence on AFM imaging techniques as well as on the static and dynamic friction properties of solids (including granular heaps and sliding nanocontacts). A great attention is spent i…
The linear spatiotemporal stability properties of axisymmetric laminar capillary jets with fully developed initial velocity profiles are studied for large values of both the Reynolds number, $Re=Q/(π\,a\,ν)$, and the Froude number, $Fr=Q^2/(π^2\,g\,a^5)$, where $a$ is the injector radius, $Q$ the volume flow rate, $ν$ its kinematic viscosity, and $g$ the gravitational acceleration. The downstream development of the basic flow and its stability are addressed with an approximate formulation that takes advantage of the jet slenderness. The base flow is seen to depend on two parameters, namely a S…
We investigate imbibition of a monodisperse emulsion into a low-aspect ratio microfluidic channel with the height h comparable to the droplet diameter d. For confinement ratio d/h = 1.2, the tightly confined disk-like droplets in the channel move more slowly compared to the average suspension velocity. Behind the meniscus that drives the imbibition, there is a droplet-free region, separated from the suspension region by a sharp concentration front. The suspension exhibits strong droplet density and velocity fluctuations, but on average, the suspension domain remains uniform. For weaker confine…
We report an experimental and theoretical study of the global stability and nonlinear dynamics of vertical jets of viscous liquid confined in the axial direction due to their impact on a bath of the same liquid. Previous works demonstrated that in the absence of axial confinement the steady liquid thread becomes unstable due to an axisymmetric global mode for values of the flow rate, $Q$, below a certain critical value, $Q_c$, giving rise to oscillations of increasing amplitude that finally lead to a dripping regime (Sauter & Buggisch, J. Fluid Mech., 2005; Rubio-Rubio et al., J. Fluid Mech., …
The motion of a long gas bubble in a confined capillary tube is ubiquitous in a wide range of engineering and biological applications. While the understanding of the deposited thin viscous film near the tube wall in Newtonian fluids is well developed, the deposition dynamics in commonly encountered non-Newtonian fluids remains much less studied. Here, we investigate the dynamics of a confined bubble moving in shear-thinning fluids with systematic experiments, varying the zero-shear-rate capillary number $Ca_0$ in the range of $O(10^{-3}-10^2)$ considering the zero-shear-rate viscosity. The thi…
When using appropriate surfactants, oil and aqueous foam can be intimately mixed without the foam being destroyed. In this Letter, we show that a foam, initially free of oil, can draw an oil drop under the action of capillary forces and stretch it through the aqueous network. We focus on the suction of oil by a single horizontal foam channel, known as a Plateau border. In such confined channels, imbibition dynamics are governed by a balance between capillarity and viscosity. Yet, the scaling law for our system differs from that of classical imbibition in porous media such as aqueous foam. This…
We study a liquid jet that breaks up into drops in an external co-flowing liquid inside a confining microfluidic geometry. The jet breakup can occur right after the nozzle in a phenomenon named dripping or through the generation of a liquid jet that breaks up a long distance from the nozzle, which is called jetting. Traditionally, these two regimes have been considered to reflect the existence of two kinds of spatiotemporal instabilities of a fluid jet, the dripping regime corresponding to an absolutely unstable jet and the jetting regime to a convectively unstable jet. Here, we present quanti…
We revisit the problem of the two-dimensional spatiotemporal linear stability of viscoelastic slender jets obeying linear Phan-Thien-Tanner (PTT) stress constitutive equation, and investigate the role of finite stresses on the elasto-capilliary stability of the Beads-on-a-String (BOAS) structure (structures which include the formation of very thin filament between drops) and identify the regions of topological transition of the advancing jet interface, in the limit of low to moderate Ohnesorge number ($Oh$) and high values of Weissenberg number ($We$). The Briggs idea of analytic continuation …
In this Brief Communication we study experimentally the flow regimes that appear in co-axial air-water jets discharging into a stagnant air atmosphere and we propose a simple explanation for their occurrence based on linear, local, spatiotemporal stability theory. In addition to the existence of a periodic bubbling regime for low enough values of the water-to-air velocity ratio, $u=u_w/u_a$, our experiments revealed the presence of a jetting regime for velocity ratios higher than a critical one, $u_c$. In the bubbling regime, bubbles form periodically from the tip of an air ligament whose leng…
We use numerical simulations to study the dynamics of red blood cells (RBCs) in unconfined and confined Poiseuille flow. Previous numerical studies with 3D vesicles have indicated that the slipper shape observed in experiments at high capillary number can be attributed to the bistability due to the interplay of wall push and outward migration tendency at higher viscosity contrasts. In this paper, we study this outward migration and bistability using numerical simulations for 3D capsules and provide phase diagrams of RBC dynamics with and without viscosity contrast. We observe a bistability of …
